he first ever Newlands Corner RC ‘Riding Club Horse of the Year Show’ was held this summer, offering perhaps the most prestigious prize in riding club history – a saddle, sponsored by Greenwich Olympian Saddles. There was friendly rivalry and hot competition from riding club members to win this beautiful bespoke, made-to-measure saddle. Other prizes included a bridle sponsored by Equessentials plus rugs and various goodies sponsored by Mayes & Scrine Equine Veterinary Practice. Judges were looking for an outstanding example of a riding club horse - an athletic, well moving horse with a good jumping technique and attitude, who has undergone correct training to perform a good dressage test and who has developed physically and mentally into an ideal riding club horse. The horse and rider partnership was also taken into consideration. The championship show consisted of a three-phase competition. In the first phase the horse was judged on conformation, suitability and temperament, shown in-hand. The second phase consisted of a dressage test, following Riding Club rules. The third phase consisted of a course of show jumps and examples of cross country jumps, style, attitude and harmony between horse and rider were all given marks out of ten.

There were two classes – the Riding Club Horse of the Future 2015 and the Riding Club Horse of the Year 2015.

Woody wins the judges’ respect

The winner of the Greenwich Olympian saddle for the Riding Club Horse of the Year was Lisa Smith with her horse, Ringfort Respect (Woody). Lisa has been a member of NCRC for 31 years, and has owned Woody for nine years, having bought him aged four. Together they have represented the club at all disciplines over the years, winning at the nationals in the Intermediate Horse Trials team, and qualifying in Open Horse Trials and Open Show jumping going to Aston le Walls and Lincoln. Lisa and Woody also took part in the Badminton Grassroots BE100 in 2010. “We love being part of a team and representing the club. We had a nasty fall cross-country schooling in 2010, resulting in Woody breaking two vertebrae in his neck and me being a lovely shade of purple in more places than I care to remember. It was a long road back to fitness following three months’ box rest and a further three months quiet rehabilitation. With neither to us having jumped for six months, it took time for us (well, me mostly) to get our confidence back, but Woody was up for it almost immediately. I have to say that Woody has been my ‘Horse of a Lifetime’ and taken me further than I ever thought I’d go, pushing me out of my comfort zone and probably coming 20 years too late for me to fulfill his potential! I am so thrilled to have won this amazing saddle, and might add that with 45 years riding under my belt this will be only my second saddle owned from new.”

Chester proves he has much more to give

The Riding Club Horse of the Future was won by Wiscombe Chester with Christine Lister. Christine said: “My horse Wiscombe Chester is now 17-years-old. We bought him 12 years ago, for my youngest daughter to do Pony Club and they went to on do British Eventing. However, he was quite a handful as a youngster. Five years ago my daughter had a baby and didn’t have time to ride, so I had him all to myself. He is not brave - nor am I - and I have fallen lots of times and even once had an air ambulance out to treat me. Helped by the clinics at Newlands Corner Riding Club, with fabulous Jackie Selway lessons, competing at their jumpcross and particularly taking part in the two-day camp this summer, both our confidence has grown so much. So, winning the Riding Club Horse of the Future has inspired me and made me face my fears of jumping and look forward to next year. Who knows what that will bring? Thank you to everyone at Newlands Corner Riding Club for helping me and my lovely Chester to achieved that very special win.“

Smashing youngster

Wendy Caller was fourth in the Riding Club Horse of the Future with her seven-year-old horse, Smash. She said: “I came to the NCRC Horse of the Year Show and absolutely loved it. I entered the Future Horse of the Year with my Welsh Section D, Smash. Everyone was so friendly, both competitors and judges. It was a super day and such fun and really well organised, the sunshine even made an appearance! I’ll definitely be coming along next year, thank you.” Chris Hinton of Greenwich Olympian Saddles said: “We are excited to be sponsoring this new initiative with Newlands Corner Riding Club in a ground-breaking competition which promotes good training and all-round exceptional horsemanship.”
