Welcome 28 A

s I sit at my desk the sun is shining and after a quick flick through the social media channels, I can see many familiar names out competing at the various outdoor shows and events taking place this spring. Social Media is a great way to stay in touch between issues and we love seeing what you have been up to. Localrider has active accounts across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, so try and follow us if you can, so we can keep you posted with news, tips and competitions and remember to share your pictures with us too. Looking forward to spring, we have been testing some stunning clothing, as well as lightweight turnouts for this issue. Turn to page 37 to read more. In addition to riding wear, we also gear our spring clothing feature around ‘What to Wear to Badminton’. I hope you will agree that our brief has been met and we will certainly look smart whatever the weather this year.

Badminton

Talking of Badminton I found this wonderful picture in the Badminton archives, I can’t imagine a speedboat being allowed this year, but it looks enormous fun. Once again we have lots of riders from the South East qualified for the Mitsubishi Cup at both BE90 and BE100 level. As we went to print entries were still being accepted, but you can find a list of local combinations who have qualified on page 32. The four-star entries are available to view on the Badminton website and it was great to see a number of familiar names along with some first timers. My competitive side comes out in supporting local riders, whether it is at grassroots competitions or four-star events, I want them all to do well. I love watching them compete and I am looking forward to reporting from Badminton as well as lots of local events and competitions this year.

44 48

It was a delight this month to interview our cover star, Isabelle Cook, who together with her 14.2hh pony, Clover, cleared 1.40m at the Brendon Stud Gate Jumping Show. 12-yearold Isabelle loves to hunt, jump and most of all event and when we spoke, she had just entered her first BE90 competition. As you will Pic – Kit Houghton/Badminton Horse Trials probably already know from previous columns, one of the best bits of this job is being able to follow the careers of young riders from their pony days right through to wherever it might take them. In the case of Gemma Tattersall it was Badminton, Europeans and then last year the Olympics, with this in mind I look forward to following Isabelle as she progresses with her riding and I am sure we will be seeing a lot more pictures of her in Localrider over the coming years. Before I sign off I just wanted to direct you to pages 34-35 where we have some fantastic prizes to be given away. Simply complete the entry form and return it to the office before the end of May. As always keep us posted with your news and results and have fun!

If you can’t always find a copy of this magazine, help is at hand! Complete this form and hand in at your local store, they’ll arrange for a copy of each issue to be reserved for you. NEWS Gallop down to Plumpton for an Easter Extravaganza!

P

lumpton Racecourse is a National Hunt course nestled at the foot of the South Downs in East Sussex. Being one of the smallest racecourses in the country, the spectator viewing is second to none and you are never far from the action. The Easter race meeting is held on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, the 16th and 17th April, with gates opening at 12 noon on each day. Park up with a picnic and watch some great racing while the kids play on the fun fair, race on the derby horse hoppers or try out the climbing wall. As well as the family friendly activities, there are several hospitality options in the Paddock Restaurant, Plumpton Marquee or private suites. On course, there is plenty of hot and cold food, several bars and a pop up Pimms bar. The seven jump races on each day bring top jockeys, such champion jockey, Richard Johnson and previous Grand National winner, Leighton Aspell. Trainers such as Nicky Henderson can be seen arriving by helicopter to add to the thrill of the day. Plumpton is a privately-owned racecourse, giving it a friendly, yet professional atmosphere, without being too corporate, making it the perfect place for a get together with family and friends. If you can’t make the Easter weekend, put Ladies Day in the diary. Held on Sunday 14th May, it is the last fixture of the season. There are some amazing prizes for Best Dressed Lady, Most Dapper Gent and Best Dressed Boy and Girl. For all raceday, hospitality or non-racing events information, visit www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk or call the office on 01273 890383.

Bristol based Nick has competed at four-star level on numerous occasions, as well as being an integral member of the Nations Cup team in 2015. He recently received a Badminton Horse Trials Armada dish for five completions at the prestigious event, and was recently awarded the title of Fellow of the BHS. Nick has focused on breeding and producing quality event horses. His homebred stallion Party Trick was awarded SHBGB Champion Stallion in 2016, as well as being placed at the Burghley Young Event Horse Final. erd of the Hospice? is a major public art installation and fundraising campaign for Hospice in the Weald. From July until October 2017, a herd of uniquely decorated horse sculptures will gallop into parks and public areas across West Kent and East Sussex to bring businesses, individuals and local community groups, including schools, together through a range of sponsorship opportunities and community activities. Each horse will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses and individuals. The horses will also be joined by a herd of pony sculptures designed by local school children. The charity has been overwhelmed by the support of local artists and businesses who have already backed this campaign and hope many more businesses, schools and individuals will also be keen to take up the ‘reins’! Hospice in the Weald is a local charity firmly rooted in the communities of West Kent and East Sussex providing care for people with a terminal illness, their families and carers. It costs over £7 million to run the Hospice each year and all the care and support provided by Hospice in the Weald is offered completely free of charge, so every donation helps them to ensure that they continue to provide outstanding care. The hospice hope the herd of at least 25 unique horses will create a compelling focal point in the community, to generate a positive atmosphere and draw people to local areas, creating a fun experience for the local community. Many of the artist have drawn inspiration from local scenes and attractions, as well as sporting and famous individuals, including racing and dressage. The horses are now in ‘training’. You will be able to follow their progress throughout the campaign via the hospice’s website and social media platforms, before visiting them in situ. They will then be ‘rounded up’ in September along with the ponies, which are being designed and decorated by schools, before being exhibited and auctioned in October.

Event horses and core strength Event horses need core strength, balance, symmetry and engagement, which are easily achieved with regular 20-minute lunge sessions in EquiAmi. With the agility and suppleness of dressage, the speed and power of crosscountry followed by the precision and effort of the show jumping phase these are true equestrian triathletes. Human and equine athletes develop these attributes in the gym which, for horses, can be a gymnastic lunge session and, with EquiAmi. Jonty Evans says: “I have no hesitation in recommending the EquiAmi - it is an essential piece of kit in the producing of any kind of horse. Our horse, Cooley Rorkes Drift, was ninth at the Olympic Games in Rio and the EquiAmi has played a significant part in his development. Without doubt it helps us keep him soft, supple and above all in self carriage.” www.equiami.com

NEWS Past winners of the Hickstead Derby Trevor Brean, William Whitaker, & William Funnell

Al Shira’aa sponsor the Hickstead Derby

A

l Shira’aa has taken over as the title sponsor of the Hickstead Derby. The Al Shira’aa Derby will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 25th June 2017, with the class forming the finale of the four-day CSI4* Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting (22-25 June). To mark this important new sponsorship, a new video has been created to showcase the upcoming Al Shira’aa Derby. Filmed and produced by Equine Productions, the video looks back over the extraordinary 57-year history of the Hickstead Derby, a class in which both horse and rider become legends. The film features three former Hickstead Derby winners – threetime champion William Funnell (2006, 2008 and 2009), two-time winner Trevor Breen (2014 and 2015) and the reigning Derby champion William Whitaker, who won for the first time in 2016. In the video, the riders explain why the showground is so special and what it meant to them to win the Derby. Many of the Derby’s most memorable moments are included in the launch film, including Eddie Macken’s incredible four wins on Boomerang, and footage of the first female winner, Pat Smythe, from back in 1962. Al Shira’aa Stables LLC was founded by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the company is dedicated to the support and promotion of all horses and equestrian sports. Based in the heart of Abu Dhabi, with various other locations throughout the world, the five-star facilities of Al Shira’aa Stables provide a unique home for many types of horses, from youngstock to broodmares, and top competition horses to those who are enjoying their retirement. The company encourages horse riders in different equestrian sports, globally as well as in the United Arab Emirates. The Hickstead sponsorship will not be the first experience of world-class equestrian events for Al Shira’aa. In January this year the Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi hosted the first Al Shira’aa International Horse Show, which offered UAE and international riders the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 World Equestrian Games. “We are so pleased to announce Al Shira’aa as the new title sponsor of the Derby,” said Hickstead Director Lizzie Bunn. “Sponsors are the lifeblood of our sport and without the generosity of companies like Al Shira’aa the sport simply could not exist. The Hickstead Derby was first held in 1961 and has retained its popularity and status for nearly six decades – we’re very excited that Al Shira’aa will be part of its future.” Thomas O’Brien, UK Supervisor for Al Shira’aa, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be supporting this iconic and thrilling equestrian event. The Sheikha is a keen and enthusiastic horse rider herself, and it is the love of horses that drives her ambition to develop and influence this sport. What better way of supporting this ambition than the sponsoring of one of the most famous show jumping events in the world?” Tickets for the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting are on sale now at www.hickstead.co.uk. The class will be broadcast online throughout the world on Hickstead.TV

The Blindley Heath Heavy Horse and Country Show Two country shows have merged to form a massive early May Bank Holiday weekend event – The Blindley Heath Heavy Horse and Country Show. The South Eastern Shire Horse Association (SESHA) has been offered the opportunity to take over the Blindley Heath Country Show which has been run successfully for the past 11 years by Graham Page and his team at Osney Lodge Farm. The amalgamation with SESHA’s own annual Heavy Horse and Country Show which has been growing from strength to strength will make a huge event to be called the Blindley Heath Heavy Horse and Country Show on the first May Bank Holiday weekend. The amalgamation of the two shows will without any doubt will result in a larger event incorporating all the rural traditions and countryside activities which together with the heavy horses, vintage tractors, historic vehicles, regional crafts marquee and the increasingly popular Dog Show will create two full days of interest for all ages. The 2017 Show will be held on Sunday 30th April and Bank Holiday Monday 1st May and the venue will remain at East Bysshe Showground on the A22 between Blindley Heath and Newchapel RH7 6LF. “We see this as a great step forward for the charity as the larger Show with added attractions will allow us to reach more families,” said Paul Bower, Chairman of SESHA. “Still central to the enlarged Show will be the ever-popular classes which show off the traditional skills and the magnificent finale parade where more Heavy Horses will be gathered together than in any other place in southern England.” The amalgamated Show will continue to be organised by SESHA’s Secretary Jackie Shearman and her team. Anyone wishing to hear more details or be part of this new-look Show should contact the Show Secretary on 01737 645857 or sesha@edenbridge-show.co.uk

Side Saddle Dash and Demonstration – Sunday 9th April In memory of Sue Webb

Riding side saddle is experiencing a resurgence in 2017. There was a time when riding in this elegant way was losing popularity and ladies were choosing to ride astride, even though it was thought their body shape could not cope with sitting on a horse in such a way. Many will have seen the beautiful elegant riders in the main rings at their local agricultural show, but 2017 sees the Inaugural Side Saddle Dash here in the South East at the Southdown and Eridge Point to Point Races on Sunday 9th April, 2017 at Godstone, Surrey. Riders will enjoy a fast and furious dash around the course of approximately seven furlongs, which will be a fabulous spectacle of side saddle riding at pace across country. Not only will riders be raising adrenalin levels; each rider will be sponsored to raise funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. Entries are coming in from around the country including Susan Oakes from Ireland, who holds the World Record for puissance wall jumping and triple bar jumping clearing an amazing 6’ 8”. Side Saddle riders from Area 8 Side Saddle Association, who include several adult and junior National Champions, are giving a demonstration of side saddle riding showing both traditional and period costumes; a great trip down memory lane. The commentary will involve members of the public with displays of saddles and historical items of clothing. The side saddle riders will be invited to accompany hounds parading on the course, thus giving the race goers the chance to see this beautiful art of riding up close. For the public this is a unique opportunity to watch and learn about a sport which has had a major influence throughout the centuries and is enjoying an incredible revival of interest today. The Side Saddle Dash will now be held in memory of Sue Webb, who had been part of the event’s organising committee until she tragically lost her life in a riding accident on Sunday 5th March. The Sue Webb Memorial Dash takes place on Sunday 9th April at Godstone Point to Point course in Surrey. New Charlesworth Jumping Saddle The New Charlesworth Jumping Saddle offers Balance, Comfort and Affordability. Designed by Joao Charlesworth FEI Showjumper and BSJA Coach in partnership with Spragg Saddlery & Silhouette Saddlery. Joao says: “I have ridden on many different brands of saddles costing thousands of pounds and wanted to take all the positives from these brands and create a comfortable and affordable saddle that keeps the rider in a secure naturally balanced position on their horse – and so I created the Charlesworth. It is flocked to fit each horse and can be adjusted to accommodate muscle change and growth. I asked other professional showjumpers and event riders to try the saddle and the response was always the same, wow! It gives you everything you need from a jumping saddle, from balance to comfort and importantly is affordable.” www.spraggsaddlery.co.uk 10 Localrider APRIL/MAY 2017

Scotts stables

at the heart of family life

T

he Hollidge family from Surrey are finally living their dream. After three years of developing their property into their vision of the perfect home, it is now their ideal space to bring up their three children and enjoy quality family time. It has not been easy. After the move they spent the first year living in a mobile home, but they have now succeeded in remodelling the property into a modern high spec space. And, at the same time, retained the traditional characteristics you would expect from a country property in the Surrey Hills.

Lifelong dream Sourcing and choosing all of the elements was a joy for Judy Hollidge. As a former marketing consultant, Judy certainly put her creative flair to work. As well as using her project management skills, juggling all the contractors. However, it was adding the equestrian element that made this house a home. Judy’s youngest two children are keen equestrians like herself. It has been a lifelong dream to be able to see her horses from her kitchen window. Something that

Over the years Scotts of Thrapston have helped many families build their equestrian dream. Here we hear how one Surrey-based family transformed their property to meet all of the family’s needs.

she now never takes for granted, especially as the Scotts stables blend beautifully with the style of her home. The family take their horses out competing on the local equestrian circuit, and the children represent their school in NSEA competitions. However, when they are at home the Scotts stables have certainly enhanced their family time.

Catering for all the family “Scotts incorporated a huge storage area into the design for all the family’s hobbies. My eldest son, who is not into horses, has even constructed his own climbing wall on the side of the yard. So, with the storage for all their bikes and outdoor equipment, all of the family interests are accommodated within this space,” says Judy. Judy’s husband, Tim, finds some pleasure in managing the land, even though he is not that interested in horses. “He plays his part keeping the fields in order, so we are a great team,” says Judy. “Driving the ATV, poo picking and hanging out with the family dog Jazz is probably great thinking time away from his business – the well-known fashion and lifestyle brand Oliver Bonas.”

S

Working with planning consultants “I am so delighted with the Scotts stables, and could not have asked for a better service and finish. Scotts worked closely with our Planning Consultants to achieve a design, for both the stables and garage, that we were happy with, but also that Waverley Council were happy with as we live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.” “I have to pinch myself especially when I am relaxing by the pool in the summer, watching the horses and the children play. We are all so relaxed and happy here.”

Reducing the risk of

Scanning the mare to check for twin pregnancy

Twins

Words by Ed Lyall BvetMed CertEM MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

i

t is standard for mares to be examined by ultrasound for pregnancy between 14 and 16 days from ovulation after either natural service or being mated by artificial insemination. at this stage we commonly find that mares are in foal carrying twin pregnancies. a twin pregnancy occurs due to the mare ovulating twice rather than due to splitting of the embryo after conception, as occurs in many other species. Splitting of an embryo results in identical twins, which is not seen in horses. multiple ovulations result in multiple eggs produced by the mare that can be fertilized by the stallion’s semen, the usual result is twins, however occasionally we find triplets. There are several hundred million sperm cells in an ejaculate used for mating, as such there are plenty of sperm cells to fertilize multiple eggs.

Natural outcome

mares are rarely able to carry twins, as their uterus can not provide the nutrients to rear two foals. if a mare does become pregnant with twins there are several likely outcomes: 1. One of the embryos is reabsorbed and the other remains resulting in a single pregnancy at full term. 2. Both embryos die and are reabsorbed. 3. One foetus dies later in the pregnancy and becomes mummified, resulting in a single pregnancy at term. 4. Both foetus die and are aborted usually later in the pregnancy. 5. Both foetus survive in utero and are born at term.

Significant risk

Twins put mares at significant risk, a mare that aborts in a paddock unattended may be missed as having slipped the foals, she may have a retained placenta that potentially can be life threatening. There may be significant uterine scarring after placental retention and future infertility problems. The actual foaling, if the mare does go to term with live twins, can be very difficult as the foals can easily become stuck during the birth. This can be very difficult to deal with at a yard, the mare would then have to travel in labour to a clinic with suitable facilities to deal with such a dystocia. mares in foal with twins that do go to term usually produce small, ill thrifty foals that are weak and require significant veterinary attention to get them to survive. Often these foals then go on to have developmental orthopaedic abnormalities such as osteochondrosis desicans (OCD)

Scan from a mare with twins

later in life. it is very uncommon for a mare to give birth to a pair of normal strong foals without any problem. The bigger the mare, the better the chances. There does seem to be a size related relationship between the incidence of twins in mares, it is very unusual for pony mares to go in foal with twins, however in some seasons i can scan as many as 20% of warmbloods in foal with twins.

There are advantages

One interesting observation is that a mare that ovulates twice on a cycle resulting in twins will often do this repeatedly and i have seen daughters of twinning mares do this too. Twins can be an advantage when we are doing embryo transfer, as for a single cycle we may be able to flush two embryos, from one dose of semen. if we suspect a mare may be going to have twins we set two recipient mares up to synchronise with the twinning donor mare. With the modern management of broodmares, the incidence of twins being aborted or born is very low now. The control of twins starts early on in the mare’s cycle, around the time of service we look with an ultrasound scanner at the ovaries primarily to get the timing of mating accurate, but also to see when and how many times the mare has ovulated. During the covering phase of the cycle we also map out where the mare has endometrial cysts in her uterus. We then accurately scan the mare 14 days after ovulation as this is the best time to identify pregnancies in the uterus. my routine is to then scan the mare at 16 days, as this will pick up a second pregnancy from an asynchronous ovulation (ovulations several days apart resulting in pregnancies several days different in age – sperm cells can survive in the oviduct for several days). it is then standard to scan the mare again at around 28 days from ovulation. Ultrasound can be used to detect an embryo in the uterus from around 11 days, so the routine described above would pick up twins. mares scanned later in gestation are harder to clearly identify twins as the structures within the uterus such as the membranes and the umbilical cord become complicated.

Other problems

as vets, we make every effort to make sure a mare is not in foal with twins however occasionally twin embryos can be missed. There are several reasons for this

happening: 1. The mare is presented at the wrong stage in her cycle by the owner for an accurate scan to be carried out. 2. Endometrial cysts in the uterus confuse the scanning procedure as they have similar appearances to embryos. 3. The mare is scanned in suboptimum conditions, for example where the light is too bright to see the ultrasound scanner screen or the mare is not restrained properly and she moves around too much. 4. There are asynchronous ovulations, meaning that an embryo may be several days younger than another detected on scan and is not yet visible. When twins are identified on the 14 or 16 day pregnancy scan we can carefully crush one of the embryos with the ultrasound scanner. Up to about 17 days from ovulation the embryos have not bonded or implanted on the wall of the uterus, as such they can be moved around in the uterus with gentle pressure from the ultrasound scanner probe. invariably twins will end up sitting next to each other, it is not wise to attempt to crush one in this state, so we move the one we want to crush, usually the smaller of the two, away to the end of the uterine horn and apply pressure until it’s membranes pop. i medicate the mare with an antiinflammatory at this stage and then scan her again two days later to make sure the single embryo is retained. Occasionally a mare will lose the second embryo following manual reduction in this way. Often this is due to inability to separate the embryos, probably due to being scanned too late after implantation. This is why accurate timing of scanning is important, the best window for twin reduction is between 14 and 16 days after ovulation. if twins are identified in a mare at 28 days it is still possible to pinch the membranes of one of them, but the success is much lower at this stage. if the twin has not been reduced to a single by 35 days we usually administer a prostaglandin injection and abort both embryos as after this stage the mare’s uterus produces endometrial cups and then will not come back into season for over three months, meaning she can not be rebred. if twins are identified after 35 days there are several different techniques to inject substances by ultrasound guidance into one of the foetus. The success rate with these techniques is very low.

Adam uses pole work and grids to improve the horse’s jump

“Be careful when you start with poles on the landing side of a fence as you don’t want your horse to become nervous of what might be on the other side.” Adam Trew pictured with three of his event horses, Left to right: Quintina, Shag Rocks an Lamborghini

Last issue we met event rider Adam Trew and told you a little of his journey from an inspirational trip to Badminton as a teenager, to a change in career, which now sees him running his own competition yard in North Kent. Currently competing up to three-star level, Adam has a strong team of talented young horses he has produced himself, to compete this season. Adam loves teaching and has a natural and inspiring way of building confidence in both the horse and rider following his own simple rules of training. In this issue Adam explains how he would work on improving a horse’s jump.

Grid Work

Grid work is a great tool to help improve your horses jump. It is something I do with all my horses, no matter what level they are working at. I always start the young horses with this and hopefully make this become a happy place for them and let them gain their confidence through the exercise. By adding a few poles or adjusting the distances you can start to make improvements to the way he jumps.

Maintaining Rhythm

It is important that your horse is in balance. If this is not the case on the flat, then it is not going to magically appear in front of a fence. For a horse to jump at its best it needs to be in balance and adjustable (able to lengthen and shorten his stride while staying in balance). Once you know the natural paces of your horse you can start to challenge them. Move up and down the gears and challenge your horse’s speed, making sure he is listening to you and responsive as you will need this for when it comes to jumping.

Working on Balance

Start the grid as poles on the floor. Allow your horse to actively trot through the grid first both ways making sure he is in balance and responsive. If not go back to the flatwork and fix what needs fixing. Any adjustments to his pace should be made before you get to the grid using half halts or softening, so he can go through the grid thinking for himself. Once he is happy trotting through the poles, put them to small cross poles. Approach in the same way with a soft hand and your leg on, not to change the pace but to give him confidence through the grid. Allow him to canter after the first cross and travel on to the next one. Use cross poles to start so you can focus on staying straight. Don’t worry if it’s a bit messy or the poles fall down at first, it’s all part of a learning curve for him and he needs to figure it out for himself. Once this is all ok and he is happy turn the last fence in to an oxer and go again. Start with your grid on the floor, allowing your horse to actively trot through the poles

By slightly adjusting the distance between the fences you can also help improve his jump.

Remember to allow your horse to think for himself

Thinking for Himself

It’s important when jumping that you teach your horse to think for himself and develop his own initiative. You shouldn’t go through the grid having to do all the work, whether its picking him up over the fence or holding him back. He has to figure these things out for himself. Don’t worry if it doesn’t feel like it’s going well at the beginning, mistakes are all part of learning and he needs to make his own mistakes in order to learn from them. It’s our job as the rider to get our horse to the fence in the best way possible, but it has to be the Horse’s job to actually jump the fence.

Staying Straight

Keeping your horse straight over a fence is important so he can use his body in the best way possible and make a correct shape giving you the best chance of jumping clear. Use poles to keep your horse straight rather than your reins. You want to teach your horse that you are going to soften at a fence and they are going to stay straight on their own and jump straight. If your horse is drifting one way place a pole on the landing side of the fence long ways away from the fence. Keep the poles quite wide to start with so not to spook him. By placing a drift pole on the landing side of the fence should encourage your horse to jump straight as they won’t want to land on the pole. Be careful when you start with poles on the landing side of a fence as you don’t want your horse to become nervous of what might be on the other side. As your horse becomes more confident with this you can start to roll the poles closer to the middle of the landing to improve the straightness even more. Use poles on the ground to help your horse to learn how to jump straight

Improving the Shape

The highest point of the horse when jumping correctly needs to be directly above the fence. Most young horses tend to use speed to jump a fence rather than power so their highest point is normally behind the fence which makes it much more common to knock it down. You can start to improve the shape your horse makes over a fence by adding a landing pole parallel with the last part of the grid on the landing side about 3.5/4m away. Having the landing pole should encourage your horse to make a better shape over the fence and watch the pole on the floor on the other side. Once your horse is confident with this and gets stronger you can start to move the pole closer to the fence to improve the shape even more. Remember you are trying to improve his whole technique of jumping so this should be taken slowly and over multiple sessions.

Putting it all into Practice

Once you are happy with this, then have a fence out on its own away from the grid and with no poles to help him. Once you have gone through the grid canter on round to the single fence. Make sure that you approach the single fence in the same balance you were in to the grid. If you don’t have the correct balance make sure you take the time to get it right. Don’t worry too much about the fence itself just focus on the balance, straightness and softness and hopefully he will offer you a better shape. It may all begin to fall apart quite quickly without the support of the guide poles, so don’t worry if it does, take him back to his happy place that you created in the grid and go through again showing him what he needs to do. It won’t all change overnight and there will only be so many correct jumps he will be able to offer, but, over time he will get stronger and be able to maintain a correct jumping technique for longer.

Top Tips Listen to what your horse is telling you. Don’t work him to the point where he starts to make mistakes because he’s tired. Give him plenty of chances to relax and stretch. Keep the fences small. You don’t have to jump big to improve your horses jump. Smaller fences are much more forgiving if he makes a mistake. Have someone with you whilst jumping. They can move the poles when needed so they are in the correct place and also great to have eyes on the ground keeping check on the straightness. Finding the right nutrition for your horse is key, I look for energy and stamina without the fizz in the dressage and that’s why I feed Pure. Electrolytes are vital, not just at competitions but all year round they are part of our system.

s i t i n i Lam

ss ra g g n ri sp f o rs e g n a d e th

Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds talks about laminitis and why spring grass affects the laminitic prone horse or pony.

S

pring is the time of year that horses are turned out for longer periods of time and the grass begins to grow, rich in protein and sugars, which can be a real problem for those horses susceptible to laminitis. To a certain extent the appearance of spring grass tends to blind us to what laminitis is and how we should be regarding it. Laminitis is not a specific disorder; rather it is the manifestation of a number of symptoms – a situation where several different factors may not result in the condition, but an extra one can tip the disease. This is because laminitis is a term to describe inflammation in the soft tissue that connects the hoof to the bone.

Inflammation

Inflammation is the first stage of the body’s response to an abnormal situation, as such it tends to be unspecific, and so can be the culmination of several factors. There seems to be an ever increasing list of culprits. Originally it was mechanical damage, obesity and overeating. Then we realised the impact of high sugar and protein levels (as in spring grass), and then the contribution of metabolic disorders such as Cushings, IR and EMS. More recently we note that hormonal factors and even lack of exercise can be factors. At the metabolic/physiological level there are two main factors that contribute to the condition. Firstly is the generation of pro-inflammatory factors. These can result from mechanical damage (jarring the hoof, standing on sharp stones, leading to bruising), metabolic dysfunction (oxidative factors, matrix metalloproteinase and hypoxia) and diet (hindgut fermentation of protein and sugars).

Blood flow to the hooves

Secondly are factors that restrict blood flow to the hooves. Blood pressure is low – being at the furthest point from the heart and anything that further reduces flow pools the pro-inflammatories and exacerbates the condition. Hormonal malfunction may contribute to this, but dietary factors are

probably the greatest culprit. Fermentation of starch and protein can generate high levels of lactic acid, which actually increases the permeability of the hindgut and allows the absorption of microbial toxins and the fermentation end products of undigested protein. These include nitrites and amines which act as vaso-constrictors and so can slow down the removal of pro-inflammatory factors. Exercise combats this by increasing both blood pressure and blood flow, flushing out the area.

Coping with starch

The process of inflammation and suppression of the normal processes that combat it is complicated and the two contributory factors are further subdivided. However, a single, critical factor is the overfeeding of starch and sugars (starch is simply a long chain of the sugar, glucose). The horse can only deal with limited amounts of starch/sugar. Too much, and it is not absorbed and passes into the hindgut. And for those horses compromised by EMS, IR etc. even that which is absorbed can lead to oxidative damage, reperfusion and limiting glucose take up by the cells of the lamellar (Insulin Resistance). When excess glucose reaches the hindgut, its fermentation disrupts normal microbial populations – leading to a buildup of toxins and generates lactic acid which increases the permeability of the cells to absorption of these products, resulting in increased inflammation.

Spring grass

And this is where spring grass becomes important. Whatever the underlying causes of laminitis, grazing on a sugar and protein rich feed will impact the horse and could be the extra factor that tips the horse into laminitis. Equally, autumn grass, where it is laying down energy reserves for the winter, or high starch feeds can all cause problems for susceptible animals. It is not that spring grass is inherently bad, but many horses cannot cope and it appears that the more we learn the more we can recognise potential cues.

In the interim we must try and reduce intake of high starch/sugar for those individuals, replacing it with high fibre, low starch products such as Speedi-Beet, Fibre-Beet, or Light Chaff to maintain normal hindgut function. Beet products, especially, produce good levels of butyrate on fermentation and this portion of slow release energy restores absorptive function in the hindgut. Equally, replacing hard feeds with high fibre alternatives reduces sugar intake. It has been calculated that a daily intake of less than 10% of starch and sugars will reduce the development of laminitis and so the importance of fibre feeds with these low levels cannot be overstated.

High fibre diets

Speedi-Beet is a highly nutritious micronized (cooked) beet pulp feed which provides an excellent source of digestible fibre and is suitable for horses and ponies susceptible to laminitis. Due to its unique manufacturing process, Speedi-Beet can be soaked and ready to use in just 10 minutes and is extremely palatable. It is also starch free and unmolassed, making it 95% sugar free. Feeding SpeediBeet before turnout can help stabilise the ingestion of sugars present in spring grass. Speedi-Beet is also extremely versatile. It can be fed in small amounts to overweight horses as a carrier for a multivitamin and mineral supplement or in larger quantities to a poor doer for weight gain, or working and competition horses that need extra energy. For more information on Speedi-Beet contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

with Kevin & Emma McNab

K

evin and Emma are both aiming at Luhmuhlen CCI4* in Germany this spring with their top horses. Emma plans to compete at this prestigious event with Belcam Bear and Fernhill Tabasco and Kevin will ride Casperelli. Both riders are aiming for selection for the Australian team for the 2018 World Equestrian Games in the USA. In the run up to the competition season, Absorbine helps with the everyday care of the horses. Emma said: “We frequently spray the horse’s tails with ShowSheen to keep them in good condition and help avoiding hairs breaking.” Emma’s groom, Lucy Hartley is a big fan of the Absorbine Detangler Gel. Lucy said: “We add the gel to the horses’ manes to keep them tangle free and silky. The Detangler Gel keeps the manes nice without making them too slippery.”

Surrey based Australian event riders, Kevin and Emma McNab always have their horses turned out beautifully. As well as meticulous care throughout the winter months and plenty of hard work behind the scenes prior to each competition, getting the horses looking good is achieved with the help of Absorbine grooming and horsecare products which help ensure perfect turnout simply and efficiently. Here they talk about their favourite products and what they use them for. Don’t forget the white bits

Now the eventing season is in full swing, it is imperative to Kevin and Emma that each horse arrives at each event looking at its absolute best. The day before the event, the horses are given a thorough bath in Absorbine 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner. Lucy uses Absorbine Stain Remover and Whitener on any white patches. She said: “I wash the white patches as normal with the shampoo and then spray the Stain Remover and Whitener on and leave it for a few minutes before thoroughly washing off. This leaves the white patches sparkling.” Absorbine Horseman’s One Step is also a must have Absorbine product at Coneycroft Farm. Emma said: “Our tack is made from lovely soft leather and the Horseman’s One Step really nourishes it and gives it a great sheen.”

Washing-off

Keeping the horses’ coats clean and in good condition is also made simple with Absorbine. Each time a horse is washed off after exercise, some Botanicals Body Rinse is added to the water. Kevin said: “In Australia, because of the heat, we used to give all the horses a head to toe bath after each workout. Here in the UK we do less washing and the Botanicals is a big help with keeping coats clean. The horse’s skin is his biggest organ and it is so important to look after it really well. We also use a solarium here to dry each horse off as quickly as possible after a wash.” 40 Localrider APRIL/MAY 2017

At the event

Once at the event, before the dressage test each horse has their tail brushed and more ShowSheen sprayed on, a damp tail bandage is applied and the feet are painted with SuperShine Clear. Lucy added: “I then do the quarter marks and give the tack a rub over with Horsemans One Step. If it is hot we spray on some UltraShield fly repellent. I always make sure I have a towel handy for any last minute things that need wiping.” Kevin and Emma are based near Guildford and will be competing at many of the events in the South East this season. They have several of their horses lined up to compete at the South of England Horse Trials on the 8th and 9th April.

Kevin uses effective and mess free Absorbine Bigeloil leg wraps on his horses. They can be used whenever you are concerned about heat or stiffness in your horse’s legs, after heavy work or competition, or when heat, bruising or soreness of the hoof is a concern.

Lucy Hartley gives us the low down on top quarter marks:

Emma’s top horse, Belcam Bear wears pads on the soles of his feet under the shoes. Emma uses Absorbine Magic Cushion to provide support under the pads. Emma said: “The Magic Cushion is great under the pads. The sole of the foot stays dry and hard and the Magic Cushion stays in place until the horse is reshod.”

● The horse needs to have his summer coat through before quarter marks will be effective. For the early events, I hot towel the horses and spray their quarters liberally with ShowSheen to ensure they are clean and shiny and any dust is kept at bay. ● At an event, our horses have quarter marks for everything, whether it be the dressage test, horse inspection or when they are exercised. Each horse from the yard has the same quarter marks - it helps with the team look. ● Firstly, a good, firm brush is needed. Either plastic or pure bristles are fine, the brush must be wide enough though and have no stray bits sticking out of the side. ● Spray ShowSheen on the horse’s quarters and dampen the brush. I don’t make the brush too wet as the water will run down and quarter marks can end up looking sticky not shiny.

The full range of Absorbine products are available from Absorbine Stockists. or more product information, visit www.absorbine.co.uk or find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ AbsorbineUK for regular news, fun and competitions.

● I start at the top and brush three downward stripes. I take great care to make sure that each stripe and gap are the same width. I then add four sharks teeth below. If the horse is tall, I will get a step to stand on to ensure that both sides match up. Finally, I brush a straight line down the spine toward the top of the tail and make sure there are no rough edges and everything lines up. ● Practice definitely makes perfect, the more times the quarter marks are done, the quicker and more effectively they can be applied. It’s Show time! Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

Spring is a favourite time of year for many equestrian enthusiasts, including myself. Apart from the fact that we can enjoy nature at its best - boughs of cherry and blackthorn, newly-blooming crocuses, glorious daffodil flowers and lovely morning birdsong - it signals the start of the competition season. As the exclusive distributor of the Mane ’n Tail equine grooming range in the UK and Ireland, I know for example that many customers who are fans of horse trials are preparing for Badminton and Ballindenisk. Meanwhile, The Cartier Queen’s Cup and St. Regis International Cup are both just around Can you achieve the corner; flagship events the perfect ‘look’ in the horsey calendar for for the showpolo fanatics like myself. ring or arena? As the competition season begins for all horse sport enthusiasts, whatever their chosen discipline, it is of course important to make your pre-event grooming regime as timeefficient and effective as possible. So, we have come up with these top five troubleshooting answers to how to achieve the perfect ‘look’ for the show-ring or arena this spring, literally from top to toe.

Right: Pour a quality shampoo like Mane ‘n Tail Original directly onto your hands to beat stains.

feature onto stubborn stains such as grass, manure and urine, or as a pre-treatment before a full shampoo and condition.

Show time beckons – even for greys.

Q - How do I boost a dry skin and coat, or a brittle mane and tail? This concern is common at this time of year, especially for horses living out. Postshampoo, apply your conditioner liberally to the coat, mane and tail - again using your hands to really work it into the skin and hair. After rinsing the horse’s body, you can leave a bit of the conditioner in the mane and tail, to lock in moisture and provide extra protection against further damage and breakage. Q - My horse’s plaits are untidy! How can I keep them from being ‘wispy’ and untidy? It’s a tricky issue, especially after winter when horses’ hair is often dry and brittle. Use a conditioning and strengthening spray that helps to provide protection against breakage and flyaway pieces of hair. Mane ‘n Tail Spray ‘n Braid is ideal to help to train the mane and give you faster and neater plaiting of manes and tails on competition days. It works well on your own show-day hair too, especially on buns and plaits. Stephen Biddlecombe represents Sussex-based equestrian wholesaler, Equine Management, distributing on behalf of Straight Arrow Products Inc.

Q - How do I beat tough stains and dirt on the coat, mane and tail? Pour your chosen shampoo directly onto your hands and work it vigorously into the stain, or work it deeply into the roots of the mane and tail with your fingers - this reaches directly into the coat to give a deeper clean every time. Shampoo and condition the coat regularly, and look out for moisturising, protein-enriched formulas with emollients that condition the skin and hair.

Q - My horse’s feet appear dry and cracked. How can I boost their appearance? Hoof health obviously begins ‘internally’ with good nutrition, and a broad-spectrum feed supplement or balancer, or a highspec hoof additive will certainly help to improve hoof condition. However, you can help to a degree with topical products. Mane ’n Tail Hoofmaker is a hoof moisturiser with a protein-enriched formula - it’s designed to condition the entire hoof surface including the coronary band, walls, frog and sole, and contains no petroleum or pine tar. You can use it with a brush or rub it in directly with your hands, applying it to your horse’s hooves to help condition, protect, strengthen and combat excessive dryness. While you’re using it, rub some into your own hands for softer skin and stronger nails. Right: Mane ’n Tail Hoofmaker aims to condition the entire hoof.

Q - My grey horse’s coat often has a yellowy tinge - how can I restore his colour? A whitening shampoo will help to revive the hair. Look out for products with optical brighteners added, which can add intensity to white or light colored horses. Mane ‘n Tail Spray ‘n White is a shampoo-and-conditioner-in one, and is multi-functional - you can use it as an actual shampoo, as a targeted product sprayed directly april/may 2017 Localrider 45

A Healthy Start for Foals

Here Claire Shand SQP talks us through effective worm control of a foal during its first year.

E

ffective worm control is a vital part of giving young horses a good start in life. Foals are born free of parasites but are often exposed to them within their first few days. youngsters are very susceptible to parasite infection as their immune systems are immature; a careful schedule of tests and treatment is therefore important to ensure their wellbeing.

The mare in pregnancy

management begins before the foal is born. monitor the mare with worm counts every three months and tapeworm tests every six months, treating as results indicate plus a winter dose for encysted redworm. Check with your vet or SQp to ensure any wormers are licenced for use in pregnant mares. Keep the pasture as clean as possible by poo picking or cross grazing, resting paddocks and taking care not to overgraze the fields. Foals and young stock are especially vulnerable to ascarids; whose eggs can survive extremes of hot and cold and remain dormant on pasture for many years. Fresh grazing is recommended for this reason.

Due date

Threadworm is the first parasite to be concerned with. These can be passed through the mare’s milk to infect the foal causing chronic diarrhoea. Treat the mare with moxidectin (Equest) four weeks before her due date or an ivermectin based wormer around foaling time. Healthy foals should acquire a natural immunity or tolerance to this parasite at around six months of age.

Foaling to one month

grazing with several other horses then a first tapeworm test should be given at six months old using the Equisal saliva test. if tapeworm is present they can be dosed using either a double dose of pyrantel or a single dose of praziquantel. From six months of age worm count every 6-8 weeks until a yearling only worming if needed. Worm both mare and foal for the possibility of encysted redworm in winter using panacur 5 day Guard for lean youngsters or Equest if they have a good covering of body fat. While it goes against the recommendations for worming adult horses, youngsters need proactive treatment to protect them from parasites. incorporating worm counts and tests into the programme early on will help to identify the wormy horses and those that are going to need more support, preventing any problems developing from unnecessary parasite burdens. This will help your youngsters to reach their full potential as happy, healthy horses. if you’re unsure then veterinary approved advice is always available as part of Westgate labs’ trusted service.

Don’t worm the mare until at least two weeks after foaling unless under veterinary supervision - this is to prevent metabolites from the wormer being passed through the mare’s milk to the foal. if the young foal is scouring this could indicate an active infection of threadworm. Consult your vet as dehydration can quickly affect young animals.

Worm egg counts Test every 3 months to target your horses red and roundworm control. £9.50 per test .

One month to six months

When the foal is a month old treat with a generous single dose of fenbendazole (panacur) – err on overestimating to ensure an effective amount is given. (This drug has a particularly high safety margin). Worm the foal every 4-6 weeks alternating between pyrantel and fenbendazole until the foal is six months old, monitoring with worm counts when worming is due. ivermectin is not the best choice of product for routine dosing of young horses as there is some known resistance to ascarids. as with threadworm, healthy young horses should develop natural immunity to ascarids at around two to four years of age though cases are not unusual in older horses that have had a poor start in life. Two months after foaling resume three monthly worm egg counts for the mare, treating as necessary.

Six months to yearling

as the foal gets older and grazes more, the risk of parasites such as small and large redworm and tapeworm take over. if the foal is

Feeding for Performance Words by Evangaline Atterby BSc Bioveterinary Science. Nutritional Advisor and Technical Assistant at NAF.

hen increasing our horse’s workload, the temptation to lean on concentrates to provide energy can start to creep in. We know that it works and the market is flooded with high energy competition mixes, so why is this not the best route and how can we increase workload and energy without bulking the feed?

Fibre Fibre. We are all familiar with it, but do we really appreciate its role in the health of our horses? Fibre should form the basis of every equine’s diet, be this in the form of grazing, traditional forage or even grass pellets, fibre encourages healthy digestive transit and is what our equine friends are adapted to eat. Not only does it work to keep our horses gut moving efficiently, it also stimulates the salivation reflex in the horse. Saliva is only produced whilst chewing and acts as a buffer against excess stomach acid, a known risk factor for ulcers.

Starch & sugar Competition mixes tend to be high in starch, when compared to forage, and may contain sugars and a high oil content to really boost energy levels. Whilst this can prove useful it is important to remember that concentrates have been linked to increased incidence of laminitis and ulcers in many horses. This is due to the readily digestible nature of starch, which can cause a surge in sugars. Furthermore the method of feeding relatively large,

concentrated meals is not particularly compatible with the design of the equine gut. Horses have small stomachs in comparison to their body size, the stomach being roughly the same as a rugby ball. This allows them to trickle graze efficiently, small amounts of food very often for up to 18 hours a day, however by providing larger meals this can challenge the digestive tract leading to problems. The hindgut microflora are in a delicate balance and highly digestible starch can cause chaos, increasing colic risk, if we aren’t careful. The old golden rule of feeding, make changes slowly, is golden for a reason. Gradual change is key to the health of the gut.

Slow release energy

If you feel your horse needs more energy but are concerned about fizz, then oil is a great way to increase slow release energy and there are a wide variety available to choose from. Linseed, or flax, is a perennially popular choice and also has the added benefit of being rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Alternatively, if you are reducing the workload, simply reduce the proportions of higher energy elements and increase basic fibre feeding, as long as fibre is the foundation of the diet we can alter the other elements accordingly. Remember to balance the diet with a specifically formulated product which supports the gut and offers a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals. There is little need for the equine diet to be complicated and balancers take the difficulty out of feeding. Focus on high fibre, add oil for slow release energy and coat shine and finally use a balancer to meet the requirements of your individual horse.

Supplements

NAF Superflex Superflex is the right combination; a scientifically balanced ratio of readily absorbed Glucosamine and Chondroitin, the highest quality MSM plus the added benefits of a powerful anti-oxidant formula, exclusively designed to address excess free radical build up around the joint. Horses’ joints have to cope with extreme forces and it is commonly the cartilage that is the first part to show wear and tear. The key cartilage nutrients, Glucosamine Sulphate, MSM, Chondroitin Sulphate and Hyaluronic acid (HA) are well known for their support for the health of both cartilage, and the thick synovial fluid that oils the joint. Research recommends that feeding a combination of the key nutrients allows them to work together more effectively than any one nutrient alone. Getting the combination right is crucial. Five Star Superflex contains the right combination of key nutrients in the optimum ratios, developed over twenty-five years of working with sound horses. Naturally sourced antioxidants are also included to work synergistically with Glucosamine and MSM to support joint health. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

NAF Instant Magic Instant Magic uses bio-available magnesium combined with a fast acting herbal base for an effective instant calming effect. Instant Magic is recommended for horses who only require the use of a calmer on an immediate, short term basis for specific potentially stressful situations; such as competition, clipping, travelling or a visit from the farrier or dentist. In addition, it can be used to top up the calming effect of a daily Magic supplement as and when needed. Note: NAF are pleased to confirm that the magnesium used in Instant Magic does not contravene FEI rules and is safe for use in all horses. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

NAF Respirator Boost Respirator provides valuable nutritional support to the respiratory mucosal immune system and the delicate capillary blood vessels that surround the lungs. Research shows that by supplementing the diet with naturally sourced anti-oxidants, the horse’s lungs can be given valuable support. Respirator contains a concentrated solution of natural anti-oxidants, alongside herbs such as ginger, rosehip and blueberries, chosen for their targeted support of healthy lung function. Echinacea is also included for immune system support. Respirator is also recommended where close contact with other horses showing respiratory stress may be cause for concern. Essential oils in Respirator Boost help maintain clear airways. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

NAF ElectroSalts When horses work hard, or during hot weather, they regulate their body temperature by sweating. Sweating not only loses fluid as it evaporates, but also essential body salts, particularly sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Failure to replace these body salts (known as electrolytes) can result in fatigue, and in extreme cases, damage to muscle, bone and cartilage tissue. Electro Salts is a concentrated combination of the essential plasma salts in combination with dextrose to aid efficient absorption of the salts. Electro Salts should be fed following exertion, after heavy sweating or during periods of very hot weather. Electro Salts can be given easily in the feed, or dissolved in water. Always ensure a supply of clean fresh water is readily available. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Lifeforce Elite from Alltech The life of a competition horse is greatly removed from that of its wild ancestors, and the equine digestive system is not really equipped to cope with such a demanding lifestyle. Not surprisingly this can have a negative impact on the digestive system resulting in anything from loss of performance to colic. The efficient functioning of the hindgut plays a key role in generating energy and nutrients for metabolism in all horses, but for competition horses this is especially important considering the energy requirements necessary to meet our performance expectations. Stress is a major factor in upsetting the delicate equilibrium of the digestive system; the effects of constant travelling to shows which can sometimes mean overnight stays in unfamiliar surroundings should never be underestimated. Constant exposure to stressful situations can, at the very least, cause loose droppings – one of the most visible signs that the digestive system is out of kilter. Feeding obviously plays a large part in producing a competition horse and, although the emphasis is often placed on concentrate rations the first focus should be ensuring adequate fibre intake, something that is continually being backed up by research. The horse has evolved to require a minimum amount of dietary fibre as a food source for the micro-organisms located in the caecum and large colon. Lifeforce Elite from Alltech is specially designed for competition horses and those faced with stressful situations. It supports a healthy immune system, increases the availability of antioxidants and creates a healthy digestive environment. www.lifeforcehorse.com

Equine America Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement Equine America Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement (EV&MS) provides daily vitamins, minerals and pre-biotics. It is an ideal addition to any feeding regime providing essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements in a pre-biotic base to support good health and condition. EV&MS provides great value while maintaining top product performance. EV&MS can be used as an economic vitamin and mineral supplement for horses and ponies in low level work. For optimum overall health and condition use V-Biotic. If your horse is lacking in energy, use Pro-Pell Plus. www.equine-america.co.uk

Equine America Apple Lytes As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. At low levels these can be replaced with Sodium Chloride (salt) but, if the horse is in medium to hard work and sweating on a daily basis, an electrolyte supplement must be provided. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. As the main electrolyte is a salt (sodium chloride) it is important to use a salt based product (not a solution) as it is not possible to suspend enough of the mineral salts needed within a solution. Equine America also advises against dextrose based electrolytes. Apple Lytes is a salt-based product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple Lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. Electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse - always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise. Apple Lytes was formulated by Bruce Snipes, creator of Cortaflex, who pioneered the feeding of electrolytes to horses in the 1960’s. Also available as a paste in a syringe. www.equine-america.co.uk

Horses can experience nervousness and tension before exercise or competition, causing them to misbehave or ‘wash out’. Super So-Kalm contains a premium grade magnesium with l-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid associated with the production of serotonin, to calm and focus the horse. Fed daily, this can aid concentration and willingness to work, without removing the edge required for competition. young horses also have a tendency to be highly strung and distracted, leading to training problems in the future. Feed young horses or ponies in their first season Super So-Kalm plus to help them to relax and ensure that their new experiences are good experiences. administer a minimum of 10ml two hours prior to event before the adrenalin is pumping. www.equine-america.co.uk

Four reasons why you should feed

electrolytes Words by David Mitson of Science Supplements

1

One litre of horse sweat contains around 3.5g of sodium, 6g of chloride, 1.2g of potassium and 0.1g of calcium. a horse can easily lose five litres of sweat each hour on a normal day at a moderate pace which equates to the loss of around 50g of electrolytes. This amount would not be replaced by the horse’s normal daily hay and hard feed alone.

2

eventers in regular work need supplemental electrolytes to perform optimally and to avoid problems such as poor performance or digestive disturbance, or clinical problems such as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (also known as “thumps”; a condition where the chest twitches in time with the heart beat due to stimulation of the diaphragm) or some forms of tying-up. a diet low in electrolytes is also a common and often undiagnosed cause of horses not performing to expectation.

3

One common myth about electrolytes is that horses cannot store them. The truth is that they cannot store excess electrolytes. if you suddenly add in a large amount of extra electrolytes into your horses feed, he will drink more as the kidney excretes the excess. However, you can make the horses’ body used to storing higher levels of electrolytes by feeding higher levels over a longer period of time.

4

another myth is that horses know what electrolytes they need and will take this in from a salt block in the stable or paddock. an increasing number of scientific studies have shown that horses do not regulate their intake from salt blocks. For example, for horses needing perhaps 50g of salt each day, some will take none from a salt lick and other may take in up to 4 times more than they need.

When should I feed Electrolytes? • • •

The simple answer to that is every day. it is common for many event horses to only be fed supplemental electrolytes immediately before and during competition. if you feed enough electrolytes during training you will not need to increase the amount in the feed when it comes to a competition. if you don’t feed in training and feed only in competition you are asking for trouble. it can take weeks or months not days to fully restore the body’s normal electrolyte levels following a month or so of training. Six winner will each receive a 5kg tub of Science Supplements Complete Electrolytes. For your chance to win one turn to page 34 and complete the entry form. www.sciencesupplements.co.uk
