Welcome Happy New Year! Just one more month and the outdoor season should get underway, for the event riders at least who are heading to Tweseldown. A lot can happen between now and then and just in case the predicted cold snap arrives we have been testing some heavy duty clothing, the sort that keeps you both warm and dry, turn to page 34 to discover more. Work has already started on our March Show Dates edition. I love this issue as it is wonderful to hear from clubs and show organisers about the events and activities they are organising for the coming year. We are also expanding our annual guide to where to go crosscountry schooling. So once armed with the March issue of Localrider you should be able to plan a very active season of training and competitions. And remember if you have a good day or something funny happens email us and let us know. There are some fantastic competitions this month including training with both Gemma Tattersall and Lucinda Green MBE. All it takes to enter these competitions is an email with some information about you and your horse and why you think you will benefit from the training. But hurry the one with Lucinda closes on 11th February. Many of you will know that our January issue is combined with the December issue, so you will find pictures and reports in this issue going back to 2013. I have really enjoyed reading what everyone has been up to and have also been impressed by the number of you who have made a big effort to go out competing this winter, despite the continued downpours. And on several occasions competing in or riding in wonderful colourful outfits: London New Year’s Day Parade, Strictly Come Dressage, Blue Barn Christmas Show and Southern Miniatures Christmas Show. Our cover star this month is 12-year-old Issie Porter from East Sussex. You can read more about Issie and her ponies and her plans for 2014 on page 18. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I have and whatever you are doing with your horses over the coming months have fun!

news Horse charity rescues 73% more horses in 2013

n what was an extraordinary year for horses, the horse meat scandal brought horses to the forefront of the political agenda, media headlines and public consciousness – and the attention enabled World Horse Welfare Chief Field Office David Boyd to shine a spotlight on the real visits a Fly Grazing case problems in the horse world. World Horse Welfare Chief Executive Roly Owers said: “What has struck me most as I look back over 2013 is how so many of these negative headlines, with your support, we have been able to turn into forces for good. As grim as the horsemeat scandal was it opened the public’s eyes to the murky trade that charities like World Horse Welfare know only too well. The fact is that horses are largely unregulated, untraceable and so overbred that they are available to purchase for next to nothing, indeed sometimes it is difficult to give a horse away.” Charities rescued so many horses in 2013, and World Horse Welfare took in 428 compared to 284 in 2012. While the charity’s Rescue and Rehoming Centres are full to bursting with welfare cases, the number of people rehoming horses has dropped by a quarter. Roly ended his speech by asking supporters to continue their passionate and genuine support in helping charities to fight the equine crisis by rehoming a horse and making vital space for another in a desperate situation or donating to a horse charity of your choice. For more information about World Horse Welfare visit www.worldhorsewelfare.org

Charlotte and Valegro smash Freestyle world record Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro scored 93.975% in the Freestyle dressage competition at Olympia to complete her hat-trick of world records. Charlotte pipped the man who previously held the Freestyle record, Edward Gal, into runner-up spot. It was also at Olympia that the Dutchman and the fabulous black stallion, Totilas, set the target at 92.30% back in December 2009, but despite producing a wonderful test Gal and Glock’s Undercover settled for a mark of 87.425%. Talking afterwards, Du Jardin said: “You all know I came here thinking about breaking the world record, that’s what I wanted to do, but thinking it and doing it is something else. To think I have that world record, in fact all three now, is fantastic and to do it on home ground and in front of the supporters is incredible.” Right: New York fashion designer and sponsor, Reem Acra, with Great Britain’s Charlotte Du Jardin and Valegro Credit: FEI/Kit Houghton

Nominate your Favourite Equine Charity Horse welfare is of paramount importance to all horse lovers and the UK’s leading equine insurer, Petplan Equine, is calling on the equine world to recognise the invaluable work of equine charities by nominating their favourite for the 2014 Petplan and ACDH Animal Charity Awards. The awards were launched last year by Petplan in partnership with the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) to recognise the hard work, dedication and commitment of animal charities and not-for-profit organisations, their employees and volunteers. There are three awards: ANIMAL CHARITY TEAM OF THE YEAR Equine charities work tirelessly to provide a better life for horses, ponies and donkeys all over the UK and make a huge difference to the health and wellbeing of the animals they come into contact with. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a charity team that has worked together to make a positive change to the lives of animals. ANIMAL CHARITY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Without volunteers all charities would struggle to survive as staff, resources and finances would be stretched to the limit. It takes a special person with real compassion towards animals to give up their free time on a regular basis. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a dedicated volunteer who shows a real commitment to an animal charity. ANIMAL CHARITY EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Staff are the backbone of any equine charity, covering all sorts of roles to ensure the smooth running of the organisation. It is down to their constant hard work that the charity can help animals in need. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a hard working employee who is passionate about their job, day in, day out and makes a difference to the rest of the staff and charity as a whole. To nominate a charity team or individual who deserves to be recognised for their outstanding contribution to equine welfare go to www.petplan.co.uk/charityawards Nominations open 6th January and close on 31st March.

Products that really work!

FEATURE

Safety Round-Up By George Gorman, of www.rstor.co.uk

R

ecent years have seen an influx of products onto the equestrian market promoting safety in the saddle. Organisations such as the British Horse Society supply practical advice whilst the British Equestrian Trade Association, BETA, regulates the products we purchase to ensure they are of optimum quality. But is this safety revolution a good thing? We think so. We all enjoy riding our horses, but there is a responsibility to be safe for our livelihoods and families, whether training competition horses or simply hacking out for fun. So what decisions can we make to ensure we are as protected as possible?

ROAD RIDING

Whether we choose to take our horses hacking on the roads or over the fields, the likelihood is that some period of time on the roads is unavoidable. The British Horse Society’s Riding and Road Safety Test is a long standing initiative to prepare and ensure riders know how to deal every eventuality that may arise. In the absence of taking the Road Safety Test, the Highway Code is a useful read. Obviously, wearing high visibility clothing when road riding is advised to promote safety; it is readily available from online retailers and tack shops.

Wearing high visibility clothing is advised

RIDING HATS

According to current safety laws (The Horses (Protective Headgear for Young Riders) Act 1990) anyone under the age of 14 must wear a protective helmet when riding a horse on the road. However, once over this age, there is no legal stipulation. Nonetheless in recent times the choice to wear a riding helmet has become more popular as a result of organisations such as Riders for Helmets pioneering their important slogan “Ride Safe, Always Wear a Helmet”. Helping the cause are inspirational dressage riders including Courtney King-Dye and Charlotte Dujardin, who choose to wear a riding helmet as opposed to a traditional top hat. Higher safety standards are also being enforced in the showing industry, after a unanimous vote that from January 2014, it will be compulsory for all competitors in hunter classes to wear hats with safety harnesses when mounted. Sports Horse Breeding of Great Britain states that it is now compulsory for all riders and judges to wear safety headgear in its classes.

The RS-tor

RS-tor offers an additional safety aid providing stability and confidence when riding. In a similar, but more functional way to a neck strap, the RS-tor functions to allow riders to carry their hands naturally, whilst giving a rider a “handle” on any situation. The RS-tor comes into action when the horse bucks, rears or spooks, allowing the rider’s seat to remain deep, promoting their centre of balance and security in the saddle. Right: The RS-tor is an invaluable safety aid when riding.

AIR JACKETS AND BODY PROTECTORS

Body protectors offer protection from impact suffered when falling, as the impact-absorbing foam is designed to lessen the severity of injury. Current safety rules dictate that if competing under Pony Club, Riding Club or British Eventing Rules, a BETA Level 3 Protection body protector must be worn. For the first time, 2013 saw Body Protectors required at the Dublin Horse Show in classes which involved fixed fences, in arguably the most traditionally of disciplines, showing. Air Jackets hit the equestrian market around five years ago and are now a common sight worn over body protectors, especially in the eventing sector. The concept originated in the motorcycling industry and companies such as Point 2, Hitair, Helite and USG manufacture air vests which inflate when the rider falls, helping to absorb shock, distribute pressure and (depending on the model chosen) offer the spinal column, trunk of the body and the neck support. According to the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), air jackets are not a replacement for a body protector, but an addition. A body protector offers permanent, static Air vests protection, both on and off provide dynamic the horse; meanwhile, an protection once air vest provides temporary, inflated. The key to winter condition. “Being a vet, I am very sceptical about product claims and always research what to feed my own horse, Elgar. Last winter I fed Elgar Blue Chip Original and he looked amazing. I liked the fact that the product is based on sound, scientific research. Now that I’ve proved for myself that it’s so easy to maintain condition throughout the winter with Blue Chip Original, I will now be advising my clients whose horses struggled through last winter to feed Blue Chip Original this year.”

“As a vet I get to find out about most products on the market. Blue Chip Original is the product that I recommend to anyone who struggles with their horses’ condition. Not only have I used Blue Chip Original to bring my shire horse, Hope, back from near-death when I rescued her, I also have used it for the last 10 years on my 18 year old, Midas. Without feeding Blue Chip Original Midas loses his weight and condition during the winter, no matter what else is in his diet. I wouldn’t be without Blue Chip Original during the winter months”

Rhys Rawlings awarded Yogi Bear Trophy Words by Julie Jones, Group Instructor for Quest RDA On Monday 25th November Rhys Rawlings, a rider with Quest Riding for the Disabled, was awarded the Yogi Bear Memorial Trophy for being the happiest rider at Quest’s Annual Sponsored ride which took place in Chobham on Sunday 3rd November. Councillor Beverley Harding, The Mayor of the Borough of Surrey Heath kindly made the presentation to Rhys during his weekly ride with Quest. We all know there is nothing more important when horse riding than our safety; equipment such as body protectors, riding helmets and tack have all advanced hugely over recent years to reflect this. World Wide Tack’s Stephen Biddlecombe talks to us about how we can improve our security in the saddle to help improve safety…

I

mportant safety measures to take when setting your horse up for the coming season include; where possible riding with a friend or trusted instructor and ensuring you feel confident in all scenarios with your equine partner. Supply your horse with appropriate but not excessive levels of feed and always ensure their tack is correctly fitted and fastened and that you are wearing the protective clothing you require. A riding hat is an essential for every discipline, but it is also advisable to wear a body protector and utilise other safety equipment available on the market when jumping or riding cross country. One of the most important factors when promoting safety in the saddle, especially when jumping is a stable and secure lower leg. A strong lower leg position, alongside stalwart core muscles provide the key to good riding and a safe and independent seat and secure position. When the horse is in motion and particularly when trotting, in rising canter or when landing after a fence, the rider’s weight is transferred from the seat to the stirrups allowing us to absorb the impact through our knees and ankles. The direction of the force can sometimes cause a rider’s legs to be pushed outwards and away from the horse’s sides, weakening both our stability in the stable and reducing our communication with the horse.

Pic by Sam Lamb

Safety in the saddle this season A great deal of stress can be placed on rider’s joints when jumping

An advance in stirrup technology The brand new Royal Rider Jump 25 Evo Action, pictured below left, has a fresh technical and ‘sporty’ design whilst retaining the strength, quality and comfort of all of the Royal Rider stirrups. Boasting progressive springs which allow the rider to obtain a higher comfort and providing sensitivity, stability and support when the rider’s weight is suspended in the stirrup. The Jump 25 Evo Action also uniquely provides cushioning integrated into the body of the stirrup allowing a structural level of flexibility and elasticity, whilst remaining secure. This promotes minimal pressure on the joints of the rider unlike conventional stirrups allowing them to remain comfortable in the saddle and protecting them from the physical wear and tear of regular horse riding. Visit www.worldwidetack.com to find out more and improve safety levels in the saddle this season with Royal Rider Stirrups!

Getting your foot in the stirrup There are products on the market to help improve lower leg security and one of the simplest ways to do this is by choosing the correct stirrups. Choosing suitable stirrups can help provide a simple solution to improve safety when carrying out all equestrian pursuits, from dressage and hacking to jumping, hunting or riding cross country. A stirrup that has been ergonomically designed could increase grip and stability due to the angle of the stirrups and in turn this can improve flexibility and allow the foot to quickly and easily come out of the stirrup if required.

Do you think you have to stay in school until you are 18?

Whatever stage of your education you are at, it is possible to combine horse riding with your studies. This issue we look at college courses, degrees, plus apprenticeships both at an Equestrian Centre and the British Racing School, also a school with a successful horse riding team. Whilst the majority of students taking an equestrian course will want to work on the ground with horses, there are a wide number of office based roles within the equestrian industry too.

Working in the equestrian industry can offer a world of wonderful opportunities, like these ladies from the British Equestrian Federation pictured at the trot-up for the Greenwich Test Event

Apprenticeship or Placement If you dream of becoming a riding instructor, competition groom or yard manager how do you get your foot through the door and shine over all the other candidates? Dora Pilkington of Coldblow Equestrian Centre says: “Experience counts of course, but employers look for far more than just helping out at weekends whilst at school. Qualifications are needed for jobs in well run yards or centres. There are various routes to gaining those vital bits of paper. If you haven’t made up your mind on a career then go for a college course to keep your options open. For those who want closer contact with horses British Horse Society or Association of British Riding School exam passes are needed. Take a look online and you will see that they are similar, but with subtle differences. You could look for an Apprenticeship or Student Placement. At Coldblow we offer both. Last year we had five vacancies for the new ABRS Apprenticeship Scheme and had over 50 applicants. In order to get through the training requirements we had to choose candidates with very good prior experience and/or qualifications. You can pay for your training either part-time or full-time, but like university degrees to get to BHS Intermediate Instructor (or equivalent ABRS TA) you will have to find thousands for tuition fees and your living expenses and spend up to five years studying. The BHSII is now equivalent to a Foundation Degree and all the qualifications leading to it give you UCAS points. At Coldblow we are now interviewing applicants for this year’s intake of Apprentices. If you feel you need to put some time in to gain experience and perhaps a Level One or Two qualification to help you stand out from the rest then consider a 3-6 month student placement which we run in partnership with Haddon Training.”

Top racehorse bares all S

imon Earle trains national hunt and flat horses, and 90% of the equines he trains are barefoot. He says the team’s main aim is to maintain horses that are fit, healthy, happy, well educated and sound - Simon says this combination ultimately leads to racing success. “Be it barefoot or with correct shoeing, soundness is of the utmost importance to enable me to train a horse successfully,” Simon says. He has good statistics to back up his beliefs that ‘bare is best’: “Our yard hasn’t had a tendon strain in over seven years... in fact I can’t remember the last one we had,” he says of his horses. “My reasons for managing the horses barefoot where possible is that we see too many horses break down [within the racing industry, where they are commonly shod], and when this happens, I have always wanted to know why. All too often, it is down to the foot and there is no truer saying than ‘no foot, no horse’. I feel that prolonged shoeing of the horse can, in some cases, make the hoof migrate forwards, becoming too long in the toe, and with underrun heels,” Simon adds.

“Being barefoot enables the horse’s hoof to function naturally...”

Have you heard the old wives’ tale that Thoroughbreds can’t go barefoot? One leading Newmarket racehorse trainer begs to differ... By Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine – distributors of barefoot hoof care products

Putting the boot in Hoofboots can be excellent as a way of offering protection from wear to the bare hoof while the horse is ridden on certain surfaces, and also offering shock absorption to the hoof structures and limbs. The new Easyboot Transition from EasyCare will fit many shapes and sizes of hoof, including round, slightly longer than wide, and even slightly wider than long. The Transition offers a combination of shock absorption and support never seen before in a hoofboot. Size guide and stockist info available at www.trelawneequine.co.uk or call 0844 2578585.

“All of this puts more strain on the tendons and ligaments. Being barefoot enables the horse’s hoof to function naturally, and it is much easier to keep the horse’s balance right, and have weight bearing heels in the correct place, rather than under-run. We definitely have less joint problems [with the horses that are bare, when compared to the overall racing industry].” However, ten per cent of Simons horses are shod - why is this? “In my experience, some horses do not take to being barefoot, be it physically or due to time required to maintain their feet bare, and I am aware of the responsibilities of the trainer to the owner to see their horse running,” he states. “I assess every horse that comes into the yard with my farrier, and after discussion with the owner, we make a decision on whether to use shoes or keep the horse bare,” Simon says.

The UK’s most successful barefoot competition horse? Red Not Blue, whose photo is pictured top left, and whose bare feet are pictured right, is a tenyear old bay gelding by Blueprint, owned by The Plum Merchants, trained by Simon Earle, and ridden by many leading jockeys including Andrew Thornton and AP McCoy. The National Hunt racer has his own twitter handle - @RedNotBlueHorse - and a cheeky attitude recently tweeting Horse and Hound magazine when they featured a supposed lightweight horse shoe that could potentially help a horse go faster, saying: “Who needs shoes! Why pay silly money on shoes when you can go barefoot! #stillwinningraces.” The horse recently ran at Newbury with jockey Dominic Elsworth, coming third and qualifying for the prestigious Pertemps Final, taking place during the Cheltenham Festival in March 2014. Red Not Blue has earned around £70,000 in his career and is a leading example of a succesfully managed barefoot horse excelling in his discipline. February 2014 Localrider 45

Against the Elements! Sarah Ridd of Weymarsh Dressage shares her top tips for wrapping up warm and making the most of your time in the saddle this month...

Survival Tips for the Rider

Sarah believes that the best way to survive winter is to stay as warm and comfortable as possible, here are some of her favourite ways. Base Layers – Invest in good layers Feel Good Feet – Possum socks. Originally from New Zealand but now available in the UK, perfect for keeping your toes toasty. Hands – Being outside in all weather takes its toll, but I have found the Crabtree & Evelyn Gardener’s Hand Rescue really helps. Take Breaks – Try to take regular re-fuel breaks, healthy snacks and warm drinks. This is the best way to fight winter coughs and colds. Lips – Avoid dry chapped lips with lip liners and balm. Don’t leave home without it and reapply throughout the day. Stay safe – If your horse is sharp and has been stabled or on restricted turn out, pop them on the lunge before riding, don’t put yourself at risk.

Survival Tips for the Horse

Skin - Changing temperatures and always needing to wear rugs can play havoc with your horse’s skin. Regular sponging off with a mild natural antibacterial (Lavender) can help avoid any irritations. Hooves – Regularly pick out hooves then dry and apply an antibacteria balm to help prevent thrush. Clean Dry Numnahs – Keeping numnahs dry and clean is really important to avoid sores, lumps and bumps. Tack – Use a good quality bees wax leather preparation to prevent your tack become damp and dirty. Fields – Add a ball to the water trough to help prevent it totally freezing and lay out hay particularly on frosty mornings.

Stretches in the Snow

There are times when it’s just not safe for us to turn out and sometimes even ride. If the snow and ice keeps our horses in their stables we like to help with mobility and spend some time encouraging them to stretch. The best way is to use a treat to encourage them to follow your hand. Start with stretches to the left and to the right, your aim will be to have the horse stretch and bend their neck as far as comfortable without moving their feet. Remember flexibility will vary from horse to horse. Also encourage stretches to the floor then placing the treat between their front legs so the horse rounds its neck and opens its back.

Walk Work – Frozen Arenas

With temperatures dropping it will be inevitable that some arenas will end up frozen solid. Don’t despair this can be a great time to spend working your horse in hand, in walk. Some of the dressage masters spend one day a week in walk in order to fine tune work within this pace. If you are working in hand try some simple exercises. Can you move your horse laterally? Start with some leg yields to the wall by walking on the ¾ line and encouraging your horse to step sideways by positioning yourself where your leg would normally be if you were riding and gently apply pressure until the horse moves away from it. Some sensitive horses will take the cue from your body position alone and others will take more encouragement. Small spiral circles are also a good exercise to mobilise your horse during restricted training sessions. Or turn on the forehand, position yourself close to the horse’s head and use your lunge line and cavesson to maintain the bend and then use a schooling whip to gently touch the hind leg encouraging your horse to step across. If you are new to ground school work, it may take time for your horse to understand what is required, remember to praise any small try from your horse and have some fun with it. If you are only working in walk and your horse is clipped it would be best to keep an exercise blanket on. 52 Localrider FEBRUARY 2014

Wind and Rain We have all been there when you know you need to ride but the weather just fills you with dread and you would rather just run and hide in the tack room! The best way to stay motivated is to develop your very own 20 minute winter work out. By having a clear working plan to ride to your session although short, will be of great benefit to your horse. Here is an example which may help you on a cold dark winter evening. Start with a couple of circuits in an active walk to help warm up, including circles and change of rein before introducing a leg yield, this will not only help with keep your horse’s attention on you (howling wind monsters can be terrifying), but also aid suppleness and balance. If you are riding a more advanced horse make your leg yield part of a zig zag. Then introduce the trot the on a large circle, when you have established your rhythm start making your circle smaller by spiralling in and then keeping the bend use your inside leg to spiral out again. By using the circle and the spiral exercise you will be engaging the hind leg and encouraging bend. Try this on both reins and then start your canter work. Go large in canter and depending on how experienced and balanced your horse is add a small circle in each corner. Start with 15 meter circles and make them smaller as the canter becomes more established. Whilst maintaining the canter and still circling in each corner add a medium canter to the long side. This will again keep your horse’s attention on you and also activate the hind leg. If you are riding a sharp horse make your extension progressive. Repeat this canter exercise four times on each rein using the whole arena. Finally end your session in trot with changes of rein across the diagonal with a walk trot transition over X. Repeat this exercise four times on each rein, ensuring you establish at least 3-5 clear steps of walk before pushing on into trot again. To finish allow your horse a free walk on a long rein, bearing in mind in the wind and rain it is sensible to do this on a spiral circle which gives you more control should need it!

Hacking

And if all else fails and the weather, the wind and anything else the winter throws stops you from training in your arena, how about turning your hacking into a training session to improve balance, bend and reaction. Even though you may be out on the lanes you can still introduce shoulder in and small leg yields. When your horse spots the scary crisp bag in the hedge rather than over focus on the object put your horse into a shoulder in. Bend your horse around your inside leg and flex the head and neck so your horse in bending so that the inside hind is travelling on the same imaginary track as the outside fore leg. Exercises in walk out hacking should be carried out on both reins. You could also introduce some on and back work. Playing with the walk pace, can you extend the stride without trotting and collect the stride from your seat without overly pulling on the rein. Simple half halts should steady the pace without disturbing the rhythm of the walk. On and back in walk, is a great way to improve reaction and activate the hind leg. Square halts and the perfect rein back at a gateway are also ways to make the most of your winter hack. For work out hacking in the winter always wear high viz and it is advisable to put knee boots on your horse and ask your farrier to add road nails to your horse’s shoes. Slippery roads or icy patches can sometimes be unseen before it is too late, don’t leave home without them. Finally if all else fails, you could treat yourself and occasionally hire an indoor school. We have been known to load the lorry and head off for an hour of training. Preventing & Combating MUD FEVER The Equi-Med Way

Do you dread the winter months when you horse is more susceptible to mud fever? In this issue we talk to the team at Equi-Med Ag about mud fever and how their revolutionary new products have changed the way it can be tackled and with much success.

Mud Fever – what is it?

How to Prevent Mud Fever

Mud fever used to occur during the wet winter months when there is plenty of mud about. unfortunately it is not only a winter condition our recent study has shown. The study has also shown we are now dealing with much more aggressive strains of bacteria, in 99% of case studies antimicrobial testing showed Staphylococcus aureus was responsible for the dermatitis that affects the skin on the heel, fetlock and pastern. any type of horse can be affected by it, but particularly those with long hair around the fetlock are at risk. back legs are more prone to mud fever than front legs and horses with thin skin, white heels or a lot of feather are also more likely to be susceptible to the condition. Inflammation of the skin and underlying tissues leads to the skin swelling, stretching and weeping; cracks appear and the hair falls out and hard scabs start to form. Horses exposed to a muddy environment or those that are kept in a dirty or unsatisfactory condition are more susceptible to mud fever. It can be a time-consuming and difficult condition to treat, with efforts to manage the symptoms often frustrated when the owner has no choice but to turn horses back out into the field or paddock that aggravated the condition in the first place.

although it is not possible to guarantee complete protection, half the battle lies in effective preventive treatment. • To try to prevent mud fever, keep your horse’s legs as clean and dry as possible. • Hosing the legs with clean water is recommended and ensuring the legs are dried thoroughly afterwards. • Horses with thin skin, white heels or a lot of feather are likely to be more susceptible to the condition. If horses are turned out, it is advisable to keep their feathers clipped. • Stable the horse on clean bedding and provide good living conditions. • use a stable boot with an activated carbon and silver layer to help provide antibacterial properties and fight off any bacteria before it causes any skin infections.

The Symptoms If you are not able to prevent mud fever or your horse is already prone to it, you need to know how this can be combated. One of the first things, however, is to be able to recognise the condition. The signs of mud fever are fairly classic and easy to recognise, with the distribution of the lesions being most prominent and visible in

Equi-Med Ag The experts at Equi-Med Ag have innovatively designed unique, reusable, antibacterial equine wound care boots and wound dressings for the treatment and prevention of mud fever and infected wounds. These unique equine wound care products contain a layer of activated carbon and silver which has been proven to have antibacterial properties, which is why they are so effective when treating and preventing wound and skin infections. Mud fever is an unpleasant and potentially devastating condition that is frustrating and expensive to treat and frequently recurs. The patented non-invasive activated carbon and silver boot range and wound dressings will work to eliminate bacteria from the infected lesions and skin on the horse’s leg, allowing the wounds to heal. Combat Mud Fever the Equi-Med Way: • Do not apply any cream, lotions or potions. • Simply wash clean your horse’s legs after being turned out and towel dry. • Horses should be stabled on clean, dry bedding and should not be allowed to stand in damp bedding or litter.

Caring for and about horses

• Apply a stable boot with a layer of activated carbon and silver when he is in the stable. This will help kill the bacterium that causes mud fever. • Don’t worry about turning out your horse out, he can still have his freedom, however if it is a severe case you may need to keep him stabled for a couple of days allowing the boots to work effectively. • If you continue to turnout you can continue to do so without the need for any boots, however when you bring them in ensure any mud is washed from the legs and towel dried before putting on activated carbon and silver stable boots. • Equi-Med Ag advise that you consult your vet if the symptoms persist. Available from the Equi-Med Ag range are stable boots, heel boots, fetlock boots, knee boots, hock boots, cannon wraps and wound dressing rolls in a range of different sizes to suit your horse. Caring for your Horse in Winter We may all be thinking about and wishing for spring, but with much of the South East of England water-logged and with every chance of a cold snap arriving over the next couple of months we asked Ed Lyall BVet Med CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital for his top tips on caring for your horse this winter.

H

orses can live outside and will tolerate bad weather well if they are prepared for winter and cared for appropriately. The wind, rain and cold mean that there is the potential for horses and ponies to become cold and burn up energy reserves keeping warm if not looked after properly. Preparation should include making sure that the horse’s teeth are well rasped and that they have had an appropriate wormer in the autumn, usually to combat tapeworms and small red worms, this means that they will more efficiently convert the nutrition provided into usable energy for keeping warm.

Providing forage The best way to keep horse and ponies warm is to provide them with plenty of forage. The fermentation process that occurs during digestion generates a large amount of heat. Ideally a 500Kg average size horse should get 7.5Kg forage per day. Many people feed ad lib hay or haylage in the field often in the form of big bales and just replace it when it is gone. Forage is an important source of nutrients, but also allows horses to feed constantly, as they are designed to do when grazing, this keeps them settled and keeps the digestive tract healthy. Concentrate feed can be provided as well. as this year hay and haylage is reported to be in short supply alternative sources of fibre may need to be found, good clean oat straw can be fed (introduce gradually) or feed high fibre nuts or chaff. The important thing is to remove rugs regularly and keep an eye on the horse’s weight, this will give you a guide as to how well you are doing providing nutrition, if weight is being lost you need to feed more or seek veterinary advice if you feel your horse or pony is becoming unwell. Water supply is also important, horse must drink or they will develop colic due to impactions of the bowel with excessively dry food material. When it is really cold the ice must be broken on water troughs, when the supply to the trough is frozen then the trough will need to be filled using containers or a hose pipe. Horses will usually drink cold water, but it is difficult when they are in the field (especially if living out continually) to monitor who drinks what. It may be an idea to replenish water in a frozen trough with warm water from a tank daily, to take the chill off it for a time so the reluctant horses will drink.

Once the scabs have been removed, regular cleaning and treatment will see the sore areas heal quite quickly

loosen the scabs. as many scabs as possible should then be picked off, the skin rinsed with warm water and then dried with paper towelling. It is important to be gentle as the infection is painful and further trauma to the skin with excessive scrubbing can exacerbate the infection. Washing the legs once or twice a week in this way should be effective. Washing more often results in chapping of the skin and potentiating the infection. Obviously if the horse has to be turned out then hosing the mud off when it comes in is necessary, and on such occasions carefully dry the legs with paper towel afterwards. application of an antibiotic ointment containing a steroid, to help settle the skin inflammation, supplied by your vet is required once the legs are dry. Where a large area of skin is affected then removing the scabs may take several washes, using a moisturising cream such as udder cream can be of benefit to soften the scabs and help with the chapped skin. Many people use udder cream on unaffected legs as a barrier to prevent infection. Systemic antibiotics may be required in some cases, especially where there is marked limb filling. Where mites may be present on the skin, such as with cobs, topical treatment with an insecticide should be incorporated in the treatment plan. Horses affected by mites often stamp their feet, chew their legs or rub against things.

Respiratory problems The incidence of cases of small airway disease or COPD is greater in winter, when horses are having to be fed conserved forage. If your horse is sensitive to mould spores then make sure it does not have access to dry hay at all. It is important to soak or steam hay for COPD sufferers or consider feeding haylage instead. avoid feeding in hay nets, as the hay will dry out hanging and the horse aerosols the mould spores pulling the hay from the net. It is better to use a stable corner hay manger, such as the Hay bar as this will contain the mould spore over time. any hint of increased respiratory effort or excessive coughing call your vet for advice on management of small airway disease. www.arundelhorsevets.co.uk

Dealing with Mud Fever Probably the most common winter ailment for horses turned out is mud fever or rainscald. This is a bacterial dermatitis that occurs when the skin loses its integrity, possibly due to water-logging of the skin on the limbs when standing in mud. There are other possible causes such as mites in heavily feathered horses. The causative bacteria are environmental. Treatment should firstly include removing whatever the causative factor is, so if the paddocks are very muddy a period of confinement on a dry surface would appropriate, obviously with some exercise to keep any limb swelling under control. The next step is to try to remove the scabs that have formed on the legs, the bacteria is protected by the scab as it favours an environment that is not rich in oxygen, hence allowing air to the skin helps in the treatment. using an antibacterial shampoo such as hibiscrub massaged into the affected areas and left for a few minutes will help soften and

Horses’ teeth need regular rasping, normally twice a year

Have a Worry-Free Winter

Winter is a challenging time for horse owners –with longer hours spent in the stable Respiratory problems can arise. It’s important therefore to think ahead and be really prepared so that you can do your best for your horse and get through winter smoothly. Stable problems – sorted! bad weather can mean that a lot of horses have limited turnout during the winter months, and being confined to a stable for long periods at a time can cause the horse to develop health problems. dust and spores found in hay are the most common causes of respiratory problems in horses, so it’s important to provide as dust-free an environment as you can. Feed good quality hay or haylage and avoid mouldy food stuffs at all costs. Soaking your horse’s hay will reduce the amount of spores, but be sure to remove any moisture that drips from the haynet into the bedding, as wet bedding will soon turn mouldy. ensure you muck out thoroughly to keep the bed dry and fresh and turn the banks each day to prevent mould forming there, too. Try to use a dust-free bedding, but if you have to use straw or shavings, choose good quality products and shake them out thoroughly allowing the stable to air before you put your horse back in. Ventilation is really important, so open windows where possible and avoid closing top doors. remember opening a window and putting on an extra rug is healthier for your horse than shutting off ventilation points.

Nettex’s Air Power Respiratory Boost Nettex’s Air Power Respiratory Boost is a dual purpose formula that soothes respiratory irritation and congestion. It works by aiding the intake of oxygen in order to improve stamina during hard exercise. Easily administered via your horse’s feed or through a syringe, it loosens deep seated muck in the lungs, helping your horse to breathe and perform much more easily. If airways are restricted and left untreated, the horse will have a limited lung capacity which reduces the amount of oxygen that can be delivered into the blood. As a result, performance is highly reduced because the muscles are unable to work efficiently. Affected horses can also develop a cough as the delicate lung tissue becomes more and more irritated. Containing Echinacea, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Menthol, Liquorice, Ginger and Aniseed.

Preventing Boredom There are lots of things you can do to prevent your horse getting bored during his time indoors, and preventing boredom is important as it can lead to behavioural problems such as box walking, weaving or crib biting. Providing licks and toys will help to keep your horse occupied, and if you’re feeling particularly inventive, try hanging a swede on a string from the ceiling of the stable.

Nettex Supalyx Easy Breather Nettex Supalyx Easy Breather is a complete all round molasses based vitamin and mineral feeding block that will not only supplement your horse’s daily dietary requirements but also help the respiratory system to function at its best. A carefully selected blend of eucalyptus, menthol, plant extracts and essential oils offer a soothing action that helps to decrease irritation of the trachea, making it the perfect choice for horses with dust allergies or those that spend long hours in their stables or travelling. Offering relief from coughs and cold, Nettex Supalyx Easy Breather naturally stimulates the immune system to keep your horse healthy all year round, while providing essential vitamins and minerals to enhance performance and wellbeing. It’s important with any licks or treats to stick to manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure you don’t over feed them.

The Healing Powers of Garlic Horse owners have been feeding garlic to their equine friends for years, knowing that there are numerous benefits, one of them being supporting the respiratory system. Now, thanks to Nettex, you can provide your horse with garlic granules of the highest quality.

Nettex Garlic Granules Nettex Garlic Granules are made from the finest pure garlic cloves and are a highly palatable addition to any horse’s feed. Feeding garlic daily can also help to cleanse the blood, act as an insect repellent and maintain overall general health and immunity, so they really will be of benefit to any horse or pony.

Feeding the Veteran Horse & Pony We have been finding out about feed, supplements and products to help keep your veteran horse or pony looking good and feeling healthy this winter

Aloeride If you own a veteran horse or pony, keeping them looking and feeling good as the seasons change, can be a challenge. Aloeride, the pure organic aloe vera supplement is the choice supplement of the Veteran Horse Society. A pure organic aloe vera supplement, Aloeride not only helps promote a healthy, shiny coat, but also helps to support your veteran’s immune system, which can often become compromised with age. Ideal for veterans and those horses or ponies lacking luster, Aloeride also helps support healthy skin, conditions hooves and aids rejuvenation and recovery too: all from one taste-free sachet a day. Either add the powder to your horse’s feed or for those that live in on ‘thin air’: simply mix with a little water in a syringe and you have a supplement, which is cost effective and easy to feed. Each box of Aloeride® contains 30 sachets (30 days worth) equaling a whopping 12 litres of aloe vera juice and it’s great to know that it’s also been tested by an accredited Newmarket laboratory and does not contain any synthetic compounds, so you can rest assured that Aloeride won’t interfere with your veteran’s medication or tummy.

www.aloeride.co.uk

Senior Range from Rowen Barbary HorseHage and Mollichaff As your horse reaches his twilight years he will become less efficient at digesting his feed. His teeth may be poor, making it harder for him to chew his feed and he may be fussier when it comes to what he will and won’t eat. His immune system will start to become less efficient and your veteran may be more prone to infections. HorseHage is highly digestible and highly palatable making it an excellent forage for the veteran. It is also 100% dust free, so is ideal for helping prevent respiratory problems. Being extremely consistent and having a high moisture content, HorseHage is also an excellent forage to feed to minimise the risk of digestive disturbances. HorseHage is available in four varieties – Ryegrass, High Fibre,Timothy and Alfalfa. Ryegrass HorseHage is higher in calories and is ideal for those horses that tend to lose weight over the winter months. High Fibre and Timothy HorseHage have an energy value similar to that of hay. Being lower in sugar than a typical hay sample, they both carry the Hoof Kind logo to show that they are safe to feed to laminitics, and so are ideal for those veterans that suffer from Cushing’s Syndrome which is linked with laminitis. Alfalfa is higher in protein, digestible fibre, energy calcium and vitamins than grass and its high nutrient levels make it suitable for horses in hard work, poor doers, veterans and show horses. Mollichaff Veteran has been specially formulated for the older horse or pony and contains a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a very light, low sugar coating. It also contains added vitamins and minerals, plant-based antioxidants, mint, nettle, salt and biotin. Mollichaff Veteran can be fed as a partial hay replacer for horses and ponies that have difficulty chewing long fibre.

Diet plays a major role in keeping the veteran horse healthy and in good condition during the later years of life so Rowen Barbary have developed two feeds with the veteran horse in mind. Both feeds contain elevated nutrient levels designed to meet with the extra nutritional requirements of the veteran.

HAYGAIN Hay Steamer With older horse more prone to losing weight, owners need to ensure their horse receives enough forage. Hay is undoubtedly the most ideal forage. Its only flaw can be the levels of dust spores it contains, which may put horses off eating and can cause respiratory problems. HAYGAIN’s scientifically proven steaming method provides the complete solution, destroying all dust spores, mites, bacteria and mould found in hay. The steamed hay will retain its nutritional goodness, and trials have shown that horses - even fussy eaters - love it because of its sweet smell and palatability. Feeding steamed hay is therefore the perfect solution for entice veterans to eat more forage throughout the winter. The HAYGAIN HG-600 hay steamer is ideal for smaller yards and for use away at competitions. Hay is steamed effectively in approximately 50 minutes.

LitoVet® Feel the Difference with LitoVet®

www.litovet.co.uk

PUT TO THE TEST: LR Comment: I fed the LitoVet® to a 23-year-old gelding who up until the last couple of years had been in active work and regularly show jumping. Unfortunately I had to have time off riding last summer and my horse lost muscle tone and began to stiffen up. I noticed that he is less stiff to ride and more enthusiastic about being back in work since being fed Litovet.

Fibre-Beet a Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-beet product with added high quality alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Ideal for veteran horses, Fibre-beet is very palatable and easy to chew even if teeth are poor or missing. Fibre-beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. It can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in hot water.

www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Participants in a published scientific study described horses on the LitoVet® joint supplement as ‘appearing more lithe, supple and easier to work the day after strenuous exercise’. The unique supplement is 100% natural and contains specially cultivated rose Hips which have a high GOPO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) and Vitamin C content. GOPO® has been shown to help to maintain, soundness, suppleness and mobility in equine joints and joint tissues. as LitoVet® is a natural supplement is suitable for all horses, including those which are competing. event rider Victoria Matthews has had excellent results with LitoVet®: “My event horse dizzy Heights has windgalls and after reading about LitoVet® I decided to try it in the hope that it would help to reduce the swelling and improve her mobility. I soon noticed that the windgalls were much smaller and less filled, especially on the front legs. Since using LitoVet®, dizzy has also been far suppler and generally less stiff when first coming out of the stable in the morning. dizzy can be really fussy with additives but she ate the LitoVet® without hesitation. I love this product and the remarkable difference it made to my horse. It really helped with her windgalls and mobility and I will continue you use it all year round.”

In The Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. It is designed to allow you and your best friend enjoy ‘the good old days’ together. www.naf-equine.eu/uk For your chance to win one of five tubs of NAF In The Pink Senior send a postcard with your name, address and telephone number to: NAF In The Pink Senior, Localrider, 2 Littleworth Cottages, Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN3 0TP. Saracen Veteran Mix Keep your veteran in tip-top condition all year round by feeding Saracen Horse Feeds Veteran Mix. designed especially for horses and ponies over 16-years-old, Veteran Mix will maintain optimum condition whether your older horse is in work, rest or play. Older horses are prone to weight and muscle loss, particularly during the colder months when the grass quality is poor. They need calories, but due to a decrease in workload, they may not need as much energy. Veteran Mix is a low starch, oat free feed that uses Saracen unique Super Fibres technology. These super fibres provide controlled energy release from highly digestible fibres, helping to keep the horse’s gut working as efficiently as possible. Veteran Mix also includes another one of the Saracen unique formulas - e-Max ester, a natural and organic source of vitamin e that’s highly digestible and superior to the commonly used synthetic ones. Vitamin e is essential for maintaining normal muscle function, plus it decreases recovery time after exercise. Saracen Horse Feeds was the first feed company to create a mix specifically for veterans, back in 1993, and the company’s association with Kentucky equine research has allowed them to reformulate the feed whenever ongoing research proves the need to.

Baileys Horse Feeds Horses age at different rates and, while it’s easy to pigeon-hole the more mature horse into the veteran bracket, in reality most simply need treating and feeding as the individuals they are. For those who continue to maintain body condition well on forage alone, a balancer like baileys Lo-Cal will provide essential nutrients that are likely to be lacking in a forage-only diet, including quality protein to help maintain muscle tone. Fed in small quantities, Lo-Cal is ideal for stabled or field-kept equines and contains a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, along with yea-Sacc yeast culture, without the calories associated with a traditional mix or cube. Horses which are prone to dropping weight easily are probably best fed a specially formulated conditioning feed, like baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix or Cubes. both are highly digestible and provide more per mouthful than many alternatives so don’t need to be fed by the bucketful to get results. Once the older horse or pony becomes dentally challenged, maintaining fibre intake can become a problem. baileys alfalfa Plus Oil and alfalfa blend provide digestible fibre and natural quality protein. Whilst Fibre Plus Nuggets are a tempting alternative to hay or haylage and soaked Speedi-beet and Fibre-beet are also invaluable.

www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Blue Chip Horse Feeds Older horses’ digestive systems are generally less effective in breaking down feed than younger horses, it therefore important to maintain a healthy gut to ensure maximum efficiency. Feeding a premium feed balancer with a quality probiotic allows your veteran to more efficiently break down feed. blue Chip Pro provides a Triple-action digestive support system which aids digestion and allows your old timer to get the most out of their feed. Joints will inevitably deteriorate, with the onset of arthritis and other joint related diseases that come with old age. although this deterioration cannot be completely prevented it can be slowed down with the inclusion of a quality joint supplement. The majority of joint supplements on the market contain glucosamine and MSM which assist in the prevention and treatment of joint related diseases. blue Chip Joint rLF not only contains Glucosamine, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, yucca and Manganese, which all help to nourish the joint, but also contains a rosehip extract called rosa canina. rosehip has been proven to be 40% more effective than glucosamine, reported in the daily Telegraph 19/05/09. rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. Hoof condition is often a concern for older horses, particularly during winter when horses are standing for prolonged periods of time in wet fields. blue Chip balancers contains a complete hoof formula called SoundHoofTM, which includes; biotin, organic zinc and copper for the formation of strong, pliable hooves.

SPILLERS® Fibres Fibre should be the foundation of every horse’s diet, as it is what they have evolved to eat. That’s why SPILLERS® has formulated a useful range of complementary fibres that are much more than the average chaff. SPILLERS® fibres not only provide a reliable source of high quality fibre but they have also been specifically formulated with vitamins and minerals to make your feed work harder for your horse’s health. Whether you have a native pony or an elite performance horse fibre should form at least half the diet. 65% of the horse’s digestive system is devoted to fermenting and digesting fibre. The process provides energy and generates heat to help keep your horse warm in winter, while foraging and chewing keeps them occupied for long periods, just as nature intended. Alongside hay or haylage chopped fibre can be used bulk out your horse’s feed. It’s an excellent way to help reduce boredom by extending eating time if your horse is stabled during the winter. Clare Barfoot, registered nutritionist at SPILLERS® says: “We all want to do our best for our horses’ health and access to good quality forage is one of the easiest ways to help. However this alone may not provide a balanced diet as forage is often deficient in important nutrients such as quality protein, vitamins and trace elements. Adding some chopped fibre with added vitamins and minerals to your horse’s feed this winter can give you peace of mind that his feed is working as hard as it can to help keep him happy and healthy.” SPILLERS® Cool Fibre with magnesium is the perfect complement for low energy feeds, SPILLERS® Conditioning Fibre with rapeseed oil is the optimum partner for SPILLERS® conditioning feeds and SPILLERS® Senior Fibre with glucosamine has been specially developed to add additional support to senior feeds. All three can also be fed as the sole bucket feed, at the recommended quantities to provide a balanced diet.

Bobby is in top condition for Eventing When Tracey Whittle bought her beloved horse, Knocktopher Bob, to go out hunting she never imagined he would be the horse to help her daughter make her way up the eventing ladder. Tracey soon took a back seat as her daughter Ellie took up the reins on Bobby, a 14-year-old 16hh bay gelding to get their eventing career underway. Starting at BE80 level, Bobby proved to be a sure-footed ride that saw them quickly progress up to BE100 level over just two seasons. With many great wins and placing’s this season the pair qualified for the BE100 U18 National Championships at Weston Park. Said Tracey: “Ellie was just 14-years-old when she took over the ride on Bobby. He has been a real star introducing Ellie safely to the world of eventing and they have worked their way up through the levels. With his age, Bobby does struggle to keep weight on in the winter and we have really had to up his fitness levels to cope with the demands of the sport. His diet has been a really important factor in keeping him going over a long season with lots of competitions and travelling so keeping weight on has been essential. However I have never worried about his feeding regime as TopSpec is always on hand to help with nutritional advice that is second to none. He is currently fed on TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer, CoolCondition Cubes and TopChop Grass, which gives him all the condition and energy he needs plus the joint supplement from the feed balancer which I believe has kept him sound all season. In 2013 Bobby ran on everything from hard ground to very soft, muddy ground in very wet conditions and he was in brilliant shape. Before we started using TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer he would tend to be quite stiff but the feed balancer has helped eliminate any stiffness and he has been able to compete in more events this season than we expected to do. He is going so well I don’t think I will have much chance of getting him back to go hunting!”

The Hay Bar Solution Short winter days make every minute saved important. The use of Hay Bar ensures precious time is saved. Filling hay nets is time consuming and is not always the best way to feed a particular horse. Feeding from the floor helps to ensure that there are less respiratory, dental and physio problems. All of which can prove to be costly. Using a Hay Bar helps to prevent the hay from becoming mixed with the bedding and thereby saving on any wastage. Hay Bar truly sells itself as the initial outlay is quickly recouped in reduced forage bills and saved time.

PUT TO THE TEST: Liverpool Wood Pellets For a 12 x 12 stable with rubber matting you will need 3 - 4 bags of pellets. Empty the bags and then level out with a shavings fork. A fork with narrow tines works better here. Sprinkle the pellets with approximately 3 to 3.5 litres of water per bag. Use a watering can with a rose attachment to ensure an even spread of water. As the bedding is so absorbent, it takes moisture from the droppings, so when you muck out take care to pick up just the droppings pile, avoiding taking too much bedding with it. www.liverpoolwoodpellets.co.uk LR Comment:

LWP Premium Wood Pellet Bedding • Ultra absorbent for a dryer, cleaner bed.

These pellets are lovely and clean. They made a great bed and the method of laying the bed is quick and simple and they are far less dusty than other types of bedding. I have used these pellets on a number of different sized horses and ponies and have been really pleased with the results. For a clean pony all I did each day was skip the droppings out with a speed skip. They were quick and easy to rake into the skip as they had dried like nuggets. I added another bag of pellets each week and about once a month cleared out the wet and replaced the pellets. In this particular stable the wet never showed through.

• Quicker and easier to maintain than any other horse bedding

I have another pony who is very messy and box walks. His stable did take more time to tidy, but it was far the easiest and cleanest bedding I have tried him on.

• Can be used on concrete floors or with rubber matting.

My big horse had a deep shavings bed when the pellets first arrived. However, he had a patch to one side of his stable where he tended to do his droppings and wet. At first I put the pellets there and left the shavings where it tended to be drier. I was very impressed at how easy it was to clean out his stable. The pellets did understandably get much wetter than in the ponies’ stables, but it is so quick to take out the wet with a shovel. This horse now has a full pellet bed. I found it has a good firm base and is better than expected for banks.

• Natural pine product neutralizes odours.

It has certainly cut down on mucking out times and the size of my muck heap by swapping to pellets. The Liverpool Wood Pellets are lovely and clean and dust free. I would certainly recommend the pellet bedding and if it seems a big leap at this stage, try a few bags in an area you know your horse normally makes wet. Either under the shavings or at the side.

• Triple dust extracted so virtually dust free. • Simply add water for a deep comfortable bed

• Premium quality wood pellets at the best prices. • 100% biodegradable • Made from 100% sustainable forestry. Save 2% when you order online using discount code

Ellie and Diesel competing in their first Pre Novice at Hambleden International Name: Ellie Horne Age: 17 Occupation: Student Horse’s name and age: Diesel, 10

Ellie and Diesel representing Eridge Pony Club at the Area qualifier at Chilham Park. Their team came second and qualified for the Championships, where the team finished second in the Intermediate Championships

How long have you had your horse? 3.5 years What do you do with your horse? We event, mainly at BE competition, but also for my local Pony Club, Eridge. We moved up to compete at BE Novice at the end of last season. I have been hooked on eventing since the age of 11 when I was bought a 14.2h event pony, Billy, which excelled in the cross-country phase, likewise with my current horse, Diesel.

Future goals and ambitions: For the 2014 season I will compete in the ONu18 classes as it gives me an opportunity to compete with people at similar abilities and ages to me. My goal for the upcoming season would be to compete in the CIC 1* classes. Favourite equestrian Product: NAF Ice cool is a great product, which I use on my horse after strenuous work, in particular after cross-country. It helps to alleviate any possible swelling and helps the tendons and muscles to recover. Favourite food for your horse: Baileys No.1 top conditioning cubes. As my horse is a thoroughbred, he is very susceptible to weight loss, particular in winter. However he is also very lively and forward going so the conditioning cubes are good as they are not too high in energy. Equestrian Idol: My equestrian idol is Jock Paget. This may be a controversial answer as I am aware that he has received some bad press in the recent months. However, I am in huge awe of how he made it to the top and the calm and sympathetic style in which he rides his horses. Who do you train with? I attend frequent clinics with many great trainers such as Francis Whittington and Judi Piper however on a more regular basis I have jumping lessons with Tom Crisp, and Alycia Port is helping to improve my flat work. Favourite competition centre or event: Eridge BE event is one of my most favourable events as it is my most local event and I have many great memories of Eridge from the last 10 years. Hambleden International is probably my favourite event in terms of the location and the design of the cross-country course; it is set in beautiful woodlands, which often are covered in bluebells as the competition is held during spring. Where do you buy you copy of Localrider? Chaskits, Langton Green Favourite Tack shop: Chaskits, Langton Green Favourite Horse Feed Shop: Bradleys, Speldhurst
