adminton always marks the unofficial start of the outdoor season and what a fabulous event it was. I was lucky to be there for the whole week and each day seemed to be better than the last. Even on Grassroots cross country day the car parks were full and the trade stands were busy, I think everyone was making up for the shopping they missed last year. A top ten placing in each of the four Grassroots sections and a Surrey-based rider taking the main Badminton title, I think it will be a long time before I see a Badminton as good as that. Full report on page 40. I was in the office for a day, before my next trip, this time to Windsor. It really is a wonderful show and I always leave wishing I could have seen more. The two outside rings are quite close together, so it is possible to dash between them to try and keep an eye on the very successful local contingent, turn to page 18 to read more. There were some warm days at Badminton, but there were also some very cold ones and at Royal Windsor, it was even colder (hence I am so wrapped up in the picture). So it seems very strange to give this issue a summer theme, Summer Clothing on page 62 and Summer Essentials on page 38. I am pretty sure summer will arrive eventually and I hope some of the products featured in this issue, will make yours a more enjoyable one. The one thing you can be sure of, is if it keeps raining the grass will grow and for those of you with horses prone to laminitis or weight gain turn to page 68 to see the latest range of feed and supplements which are available. Next month is a Summer Show Report issue, so if you have been out competing and would like to be featured, email the office to let us know. Also we have free tickets for the Royal International at Hickstead (days to be confirmed), so there is no excuse not to come and visit our stand at Hickstead and say hello to the team. Until then, have fun!

NEWS It’s Flying Feathers at Lingfield Park The sound of hooves thundering down the track is nothing new at Lingfield Park, but racegoers may need to get their earplugs out when the racecourse stages the UK’s first ever Shire Horse race. The sight of up to eight Shires pounding down the All Weather Track will be a unique thrill for visitors to the Surrey racecourse on its annual Countryside Raceday. Professional jump jockeys will take up the reins and cajole these larger than life equines, provided by neighbouring Hurst Green Shires, over a distance of two furlongs, whilst raising the profile of this threatened breed, as well as raise money for the Countryside Alliance Foundation. Jump jockey David Crosse is one of those who can’t wait to get in the saddle on June 15th in ‘The Flying Feathers Race’ – named after the horse’s beautiful silky hair on the lower legs. “We’re always up for a challenge and as a Shire horse race hasn’t been done before, we are all up for it,” he laughed, after a trial ride at the racecourse. “I was surprised how nimble they are – in a much slower way of course! I can’t wait for the race, it will be quite a sight.” Jacquie Gardiner, from Hurst Green Shires, added that they were passionate about the breed and excited to be taking part in the first ever race of its kind. She said the trial rides had gone well and the Shires had seemed to enjoy the challenge of racing on the All Weather Track. The Flying Feathers Race will be among a programme of countryside activities to take place on June 15th to raise funds for the Countryside Alliance Foundation. There will also be a ‘meet the hounds’ session with the local huntsmen, a bird of prey and local bee display and plenty of entertainment on offer for the children. Accompanied children and young people aged under18 are admitted free of charge to all race meetings at Lingfield Park. Don’t forget you can arrive early and start the evening with a behind the scenes tour of the racecourse where you’ll be able to meet those who make the race day happen for just £5 per adult. www.lingfieldpark.co.uk

Trouble with allergies ArcEquine is a tissue repair system that has been developed after many years of academic and practical research with the help of successful riders, trainers and owners from all equestrian disciplines. ArcEquine has proved highly effective at this time of year to help with the many skin complaints that occur during horses changing coats, the onset of Sweet Itch and allergic reactions/ skin lumps that can only be put down to sensitivity to pollens or grazing. Whilst anti-histamines may be a route to follow the likes of Francis Whittington prefer to help the horse build up its own immune system by using the ArcEquine micro-current unit. Francis Whittington used the unit a few years back on his 4* horse Sir Percival for mystery lumps that appeared one spring – and within days they had disappeared. He is a big advocate of the product and happily recommends it to many of his associates and peers. To date it is being used successfully by many leading riders and trainers. Francis keeps his unit on the stable yard for every conceivable ailment or injury! www.arcequine.com

The great thing about 3.5 ton horseboxes is anyone with a car licence can drive one. The Sevenoaks based family behind Equi Star Horseboxes have embraced this and designed the Athena and Apollo. Both horseboxes are designed to a technically high standard using extremely lightweight yet strong materials. Equi Star Horseboxes are always pushing the boundaries of horsebox design to improve their horseboxes and somehow, just like Dr Who’s tardis, they appear much bigger on the inside. They drive like a car, are easy to manoeuvre and everything about them has been designed to be easy for the single lady driver to do on her own. The ramp is light and easy to lift and both models have a sliding partition, which makes it easy to tack up and do things to the horse in an increased space, without too much difficulty. The sliding partition mechanism also makes it easy and safe to travel mares and foals together. Most of the horseboxes are built to order, enabling customers to add in extras that they think will make their life easier, or perhaps just a little bit more luxurious. If someone has a good idea and the team at Equi Star can see the benefit in it, then they are quite likely to incorporate it in future designs. Have a look at the photo gallery on their website to find out just how much luxurious living for both you and your horse can fit into an Equi Star 3.5 ton horsebox. www.equi-star.com

Lungeing the leisure horse

M

ost people think lungeing is for rehabilitation or competition horses, but think how much more fun you could have if your horse was better balanced and moved with lightness and softness. Lungeing helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch across the back and engage his hind quarters whilst moving freely. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Good aids, like the EquiAmi lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters and lightness of the forehand. A regular lunge session can add lots to your all round enjoyment of your horse.

FEATURE Often, dressage tests can be won or lost on very few differences in marks between competitors; so it is vital to squeeze every possible point from your test. Here are my top tips to help you boost your percentage to its maximum: First impressions

The judge will appreciate a well presented horse and rider, so remember to be very well groomed and smartly plaited. (There are no rules to say you must plait your horse, but most people do.) Your horse should be wearing a snaffle bridle with no martingale, no boots or bandages, and you should have on correct and clean riding attire. Remember your gloves; ideally white, beige or cream; to match your overall turnout. A pleasing and streamlined appearance may not directly affect your marks, but it does help give the impression that you care about your test, and have made an effort!

How to achieve better marks in dressage

By Sarah Millis

Accuracy

Your centre line entrance should be positive and perfectly straight. It is very easy to drift on any straight line, so practise with someone watching at home, until you are confident of an exact performance of this important start and finish to your test. Twenty metre circles must not be too large, or more commonly, too small. Ensure you ride through X if starting from A or C, and inside D and G (on the centre line), if the circle starts at E or B. Keep the correct bend and curve throughout the circle, preventing misshapes through falling in or out. When turning between letters, horses need time to perform a smooth turn; anticipate the space needed, so that on completion, you are in the correct place with the letter directly behind you. If you are asked to halt at a letter, try to ensure that the rider’s body is exactly in line with the letter, not the horse’s head or shoulders, as is sometimes seen. Halts must always be square, and this will need to be practised beforehand. If asked to execute transitions between letters, aim to do this exactly in the middle of the two, being neither too early or late – this will improve your chances of higher marks for true accuracy. Again, transitions required at a given letter should be when the rider’s body is exactly in line with it.

Your centre line entrance should be positive and perfectly straight

Medium canter is ideal for prelim/ novice level dressage. Collection and extension will be asked for later

Paces

The gaits of the horse should show positivity, but not be rushed. Take your time and enjoy the rhythm you create; your horse must be presented at his best. Medium walk, trot and canter will generally produce the best movement for prelim/novice level dressage. Collection and extension will only be asked for later on, as you progress up the levels.

Remember, remember...

On competition days, nerves can play a part and it is easy to forget the test, so it must be very well learned, until second nature. Although shows will often allow tests to be read for you, it is obviously preferable for you to know it yourself.

See the RS-tor on Libby’s International’s stand at shows inc. Hickstead Derby and Eridge Horse Trials in June

Halts

Halts on the centre line must demonstrate obedience and should be straight, square and still. Try to make eye contact with the Judge and smile with a confident salute at the end, showing a happy and favourable picture. If you are riding accurately in all points on a well-behaved horse, you will be demonstrating good balance and schooling, which will reflect well on your score sheet.

SPOTLIGHT

The Goodsir Sisters

Words and pictures by Alex Kelly

Frances Goodsir and Fredericksminde Hazy Miracle, Supreme Champions at the SE Connemara Show 2013 Below: Frances and The Quiet Man pictured at The Edenbridge and Oxted Show

The Goodsir sisters make a great team, producing and competing Connemara ponies from their Woldingham base. Alex Kelly discovered how they make it work and which are the ponies to watch.

B

y 8.00 am sisters, Frances, Flick and Fee Goodsir have already done a full day’s work at their Woldingham-based yard, having mucked out, turned out and exercised seven ponies, all before heading off to their respective jobs. “Whoever gets home first will feed and bring in the ponies,” explained Frances, who has seen her family’s dedication and commitment well rewarded in the show ring.

Charging over Wisley Common The sisters became involved with ponies through their mother, Ruth, who taught blind children to ride at a local riding school. As a reward for helping lead the ponies round in the lessons they would be allowed the occasional ride. When the school closed they rescued one of the ponies, Hot Toddy and kept him on grass livery, from where they would borrow other ponies in the field he shared, then

charge around Wisley Common, terrorising dog walkers! It was following a day out with their aunt at the Clapham Common Horse Show, that they were inspired to take up showing. They also made a yearly pilgrimage to watch the show pony classes at the Horse of the Year Show, when it was held at Wembley. Fee and Francis bought their first competition pony when they started work, at that time Flick was in London studying music. After plenty of fun they eventually sold the talented all rounder, Francis continued to ride for other people, while Fee was gaining her NPS stud diploma with the Beckside Stud in Harrogate. As part of her training she visited Jerome Harforth’s yard and fell in love with a Connemara pony. A breed, with which they have become synonymous. “We were too old to compete show ponies,” Fee tells us, “and this was the nearest native breed that went like a show pony, but would carry an adult.”

Dedicated to Connemaras They are true amateurs in that they do what they do simply for the love of doing it. Frances undertakes the riding and showing duties while Fee and Flick provide constructive criticism, which helps Frances train happy ponies that are confident and willing to try their best at whatever the discipline, be it showing, working hunter pony, dressage or show jumping. “We’re very much a team” says Frances. “We look for constructive ways to train the ponies to make progress in their individual performances, trying to be realistic to their current level of training and how we can help them to move on to the next level.” It’s a successful dynamic, which has seen them produce some of the country’s best all round Connemaras, which have not only been regular finalists at the likes of HOYS and RIHS, but are also versatile ponies and regular members of riding club teams. Ponies like White Rock Princess who competed at

HOYS in the international arena when the show was still held at Wembley helped to fulfill their childhood dreams.

Built in flight mechanism They have built up an impressive list of major show winners including Rosenaharley Romilo, Falfield Silver Slipper and The Quiet Man, who was “The most difficult pony I have ever had!” says Francis. “He came with a built in flight mechanism, which if uncertain he activated, meaning that there were numerous occasions when

I was bolted off with!” But with time and dedication the team got him through this tricky phase to see him qualify for HOYS twice and the RIHS seven times in the WHP classes. He also represented the riding club at every discipline. Tragically they lost The Quiet Man last August, just a few days after competing at the RIHS.

Ones to watch With an exciting new generation of young Connemaras to bring on Frances, Flick and Fee are looking forward to seeing

them progress. Sydserff Scots Fir will focus on the flat classes and dressage, while Fredericksminde Hazy Miracle is proving to be a versatile and winning all rounder. HOYS and RIHS hopes are pinned on Sydserff Golden Wych Elm who, along with a host of other activities, will contest the open classes for the first time. While competing in the ring they are focused on the job in hand, but outside they like meeting up with friends who are also fellow competitors, because at the end of the day, “we are amateurs and are doing this for fun!”

He was the smallest cob in both his classes, but can clearly hold his own amongst even the Maxi cobs. He took the atmosphere completely in his stride and behaved impeccably, performing a stunning gallop.”

Dietary requirements of the barefoot horse By Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine

For the barefoot horse, getting the diet right is key – it will be almost impossible for the barefoot horse to meets its working potential, if the diet is not right. Domesticated equine diets

In our modern horse care society, hay is often only fed in limited quantities, or when grass is in short supply, so there are periods when the horse has nothing to eat. Hard feed is often given twice a day, and may contain a mixture of cereals; this may provide high levels of sugar and starch, given for extra energy. (In fact, the energy requirements may be more appropriately met by giving lowstarch feeds that provide slow-burn energy). The hard feeds may also be coated in molasses to reduce dust, and make the feed more appetising. In short, many horses’ diets are too high in sugars and starch, and too low in fibre, according to many experts. The hooves are a very telling indicator of the quality of the diet.

Case study

Badger is a 16.2hh rising-seven Irish Sports Horse – he’s been barefoot for 18 months. He has a base diet of Cool Stance Copra Meal; Copra is the white material cut from within the coconut shell. It provides low-sugar, cool energy and high protein, and also helps to prevent insulin insensitivity. This is mixed with Allen & Page Fast Fibre, a molasses-free mash, and a small amount of TopChop Grass, a high-temperature dried, molasses and alfalfa-free chaff. Micronised linseed meal is added for the fatty acids, for condition and stamina, and oil is added to the diet in winter, for calories. Badger has at least 12kg of hay a day, and this is analysed, with the feeds being supplemented with zinc, copper, magnesium, calcium, probiotics, charcoal and brewers yeast. “18 months into his barefoot journey and the hooves are now quite smooth and strong, with no horizontal ‘event lines’ that indicate dietary issues or other challenges. With the wet winter, it has been difficult to maintain strong healthy frogs, but I think his diet has provided a ‘buffer’ for the environmental challenges that we have faced,” his owner Kathy says.

A natural diet

There are many easy ways to make little dietary improvements that will make a huge difference to equine hoof quality and overall horse health: • Feed a low starch, low sugar diet. • Consider not fertilising pasture, allowing it to naturally recover, and using a broad meadow seed mix containing herbs and grasses. • Horses that are laminitis-prone, insulin resistant, or have any kind of metabolic disorder usually do well with grass kept to an absolute minimum. • Good quality, low-sugar forage should form by far the largest part of a horse’s diet. • Feed a supplement; consider having your hay analysed, and supplement accordingly, based on what your hay provision is lacking. Some vitamins and minerals are specifically recommended for horses requiring optimised hoof health: • Biotin (vitamin H) promotes hoof quality, and should be ideally fed in conjunction with methionine and often zinc, to aid absorption. • A heavy magnesium oxide supplement is often recommended by hoof care professionals for horses going barefoot, or horses that are ‘footy’ or laminitic. • A good pre and pro biotic should be considered. This serves as a very good nutritional insurance policy, and will ensure that the food your horse is eating is used to its full benefit. • An alternative if supplementing based on your horse’s hay ration is not possible, e.g. due to multiple hay suppliers, is to use a good, broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement without added sugars, in order to cover the possible imbalances. • Free choice salt should also always be available. june 2013 Localrider 33

Plaiting magic

Blitz your grooming routine, to be spic and span on show day – especially if you have a grey!

Turnout tips By Stephen Biddlecombe

When competing in show jumping competitions, your turnout and appearance becomes crucial, in order for horse and rider to be ‘dressed to impress’. So alongside maintenance grooming sessions, a “blitzing” the night before a competition is invaluable. Here are my top tips -

1 2 3

The first step when getting your horse clean and shiny for a competition is to give him a good brush in order to remove the loose hair from the coat. This process is extremely beneficial as it allows old, dead hair to be removed, providing space for new growth of hair to develop. Giving your horse a massage with a grooming mitt can provide the ideal treat before competition day, improving circulation, and cleaning and polishing the skin. The Sheepskin Grooming Mitt is £6.25 (excl VAT) at www.worldwidetack.co.uk, or free with every Cowboy Magic grooming product purchased.

Although plaiting is not required in show jumping events, competitors should ensure their horses are smartly turned out. If you do decide to plait, Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine ensures your equine’s mane and tail is knot free, allowing you to plait quickly, easily and efficiently, with outstanding shine. RRP from £12.33 (excl VAT) at www.worldwidetack.co.uk. Remember however that it can be useful to have a loose main to grab hold of when you are jumping, in the event of an unexpected catleap. If you do go ‘au naturel’, pull or trim a loose main, for smartness.

Some riders like to plait for higherlevel events, although a loose main is useful for holding on to!

A close shave Is depriving our equines of their whiskers cruel? Or is it an essential part of correct turnout for show jumping? How much our horses use their whiskers exactly is undetermined, but it is known that horses use them in order to identify objects and food, and determine a safe grazing area. Many people choose Some people believe whiskers play a part to remove whiskers in providing balance. However, as many for competition, for competition horses succeed to the highest a smarter look level without whiskers, the theories that it has a negative impact can be disputed! So if you are going for a smart look, why not try the Smart Grooming Equi-Shave, for quick and accident free whisker trimming? This is a disposable razor for horses, with a guarded blade. RRP £1.63 (excl VAT) at www.worldwidetack.co.uk.

After a thorough groom, the next step is an efficient bath. Our horses have sensitive skin, particularly those with pink as opposed to black skin, and the perfume found in many human shampoos can cause our horses problems. Choose an equine-specific shampoo to ensure the horse does not suffer any skin sensitivity, itchiness or allergic reactions, and does not attract insects and flies via the sweet perfume often found in human shampoos. Try Cowboy Magic Rosewater Shampoo, from £8.04 (excl VAT) at www.worldwidetack.co.uk.

4

Next, apply Quic Screen Coat Sunscreen, from £18.75 (exc VAT) at ww.worldwidetack.co.uk; it is designed to be used all over the mane, tail and coat of a freshly shampooed, damp horse. The active ingredient will bind to the hair and protect it from the sun’s UVB rays for eight or more days, or until shampooed.

5

After all your hard work, the last thing you want Consider a to do is turn your equine back out in the field topical product and get covered in grass stains, so arrange to that will protect keep him stabled over night if you don’t already, and the horse’s use a soft rug with a neck cover to keep the horse coat from the clean, stain free, and your plaits protected. sun’s UVB rays

Rider attire – what should you wear in showjumping competitions? • Tall boots, usually black or brown. Matching leather gaiters, cut in traditional riding boot style, may be worn with short boots. • Light-coloured breeches; commonly white or beige. • A single coloured riding jacket, such as grey, red, black, navy, green, brown or burgundy. • A light-coloured shirt (often white) with a stock or secure tie. • Gloves in a discreet colour. • A securely fastened ‘two point’ hat. I tested the larger lick and made use of the lid to limit his intake. Watch out for horse with Horslyx nose approaching – he is likely to use you as a rubbing post.

ust three miles outside of Tunbridge Wells, Eridge Park is host to one of the South East’s most popular horse trials. This year the event takes place in front of the main house, giving it the feel of a stately home event, yet on a smaller and more friendly scale. The grounds at Eridge are beautiful and its hilly terrain offers many vantage points for relaxing in the sunshine while watching the competitors go cross country. Entries haven’t yet closed, but it is hoped that some of the area’s more prominent event riders will be competing including 2013 Badminton winner, Jonathan Paget, Chairman of the Event Rider’s Association and probably closest event rider to Eridge, Francis Whittingon, as well as Pippa Funnell, daughter of the event’s organiser, Jenny Nolan.

A great family day out Entry to the event on either day costs just £10 per car, including all the passengers and with a new Craft & Farmer’s Market as well as Food Stalls, Licenced Bar and Mini Fun Fair, there is something for everyone. Sunday’s activities include Dogs in the Park, with terrier racing, dog agility and dog show. There are classes for every type of dog from Pedigree to Novelty, so if you think your dog will melt the Judge’s Heart, why not have a go. Entries cost just £1 per class and all you need to do is book in before 11.15am (do check the website for more information). JUNE 2013 Localrider 55

Words by Fiona Rafferty BSc (Hons) ACII

O

ver the last couple of years I have heard many riders discussing their horse’s insurance premiums and entering into the debate of whether they should continue to insure their horse. The familiar quote of: “I have never made a claim, I am not sure if it is worth it.” Every situation is different, depending on cover, value of horse and the owner’s financial means and the best place to start in working out what to do next is with a pen and paper (or spreadsheet) and list down all the insurances you have in place and what they are costing. Next check the list and see if everything you thought was insured is. For example where is your tack covered? Mine personally is insured under my household policy, with various extensions to cover it while away at shows and while locked in the boot of my car. I had originally intended to include it under my horse’s policy, but for some reason the quote came back in the hundreds (just for the saddle) and it cost a fraction of that to add it to my household insurance.

Are you a BHS Gold Member?

If you are a member of a riding club or society like British Showjumping the chances are your membership includes an element of Public Liability cover. This is a good thing and covers you for both legal costs and compensation in the event that you are found legally responsible for an accident, injury or death to a third party or cause damage to their property. It is worth checking the Policy wording to check in what circumstances you are covered, in case it is limited to your own horse and also the cover may be limited if you ride professionally and would therefore be expected to have your own professional insurances in place. In this litigious society we live in, it would be irresponsible to ride a horse without some form of Public Liability insurance in place. Even if you hack out a friend’s horse at the weekend you should have some form of cover in place and the most economic and broad cover is provided by the BHS under their Gold Membership scheme. You will be insured in respect of Public Liability for any horse that you own or have permission to ride, on the condition that they are used purely for recreational purposes. There must be no business activities undertaken on your part as the Gold Member. If you are a BHS Gold Member or have Public Liability insurance provided by a club you belong to make sure you let your insurer or broker know as it could be that you are paying a premium for this cover under your horse’s insurance policy.

Can you afford to not insure your horse?

Next you need to look at the Sum Insured (value) your horse is insured for and the types of cover you have under your policy. Add to your list the worst things that could happen to your horse. These might include: death and loss by theft or straying, accident in field, colic, loss of use. If any one of these happened do you have the finances to achieve the desired result, within the values set by the policy? If you live to your means and have very little money in savings then it is probably advisable to keep insuring your horse, but discuss with your insurer/broker ways in which you might adapt the cover to make savings. This could include increasing your policy excess, in which case you would need to ensure you had a contingency fund to cover the excess if necessary. The great thing about insurance is it helps you deal with the unexpected. Horses are accident prone. They can be turned out in the same field for years, then one day they tread on a nail, which infects a joint and within hours they are in the animal hospital, fighting for their life. Anyone who has heard or experienced similar situations will know that within days of such an incident the Vets Fees cover under a policy

can be virtually drained. The reason I like to insure my horse is it gives me the peace of mind that in the event of an emergency I can call the vet and deal with everything else later. At what stage when you are standing there with the vet do you decide that you can’t afford a £3,000 vet’s bill or really it is not financially viable to spend thousands of pounds on a yearling you rescued out of a field for a few hundred pounds. If you don’t insure your horse you need to have thought through the scenarios and what you intend to do in each situation.

Talk to the experts

Insurance as a concept was founded in the old coffee shops of London and little has changed in the years since then. Virtually everything is insurable for a premium, so if you have a list of what you want covered, talk to an expert and ask them to provide you with a quotation. A good place to start would be with South Essex Insurance Brokers Ltd (SEIB), who in 2013 are celebrating 50 years in business. Over the years the company has been the first to introduce everything from horsebox insurance, loss of use cover, insurance for older horses and higher limits on vet’s fees. Barry Fehler started the business in 1963 and when he bought an expensive show horse he found it difficult to insure particularly as there was no loss of use cover available should the horse become unable to show due to sickness or injury. Therefore he went to the insurance market and found an underwriter to offer this cover and history was in the making. Barry is still actively involved in the company today and if you have something unusual to insure I am certain he and his team will know the right place to go to obtain you a quotation. Petplan Equine has a number of flexible policies and their online quotation system is quick and easy to use. They offer a discount for the multiple horse owner and it is worth having a chat with them to find out if this might be a more economical way of insuring your horses, if you have a number of different policies in place currently. Ultimately insuring your horse gives you peace of mind that in the event of an accident or incident there is a set financial limit within the Policy, which will become available to you (subject to T&C). If your horse has major surgery then this limit might be exceeded, but hopefully it gives you time to assess the situation and make the right decision at that time. And if the worst happens and you lose your horse, you may then be in a financial position to buy a new horse. If throughout your horse’s lifetime you never have to make a claim, well that’s not an entirely bad thing.

There has been no to clean!

Spring

When we have not really experienced spring this year, it has been hard to get into that spring cleaning mood. Yards up and down the country have suffered from a long hard winter and are in desperate need of some attention. Scotts of Thrapston, leading manufacturers of premium timber stabling, has given some tips to help motivate you to take action: • Start by removing cobwebs from the inside of the stable to minimise dust and help prevent asthma and coughs. • Check the roof for loose tiles. • Clean cladding, doors and windows, keeping an eye out for any damage. Though Scotts of Thrapston recommends not re-staining until the summer when the wood can really dry out. • Sweep the hidden corners of the tack and feed room that get neglected through the year, and don’t forget behind doors! • Check the kicking board and repair any damage caused. Scotts of Thrapston recommends “Stokboard” to 1.2m high to provide extra protection against kicking.

T HE M ASTERS IN S TABLING

• Hire a steam cleaner for use on the yard; blast away the grime and moss which can make the surface slippery and dangerous for feet, hooves and wheels. • Steam clean the kicking board to remove stains and freshen up with a coat of black and white paint. Scotts of Thrapston recommends black Bitumen paint by Sovereign Chemicals, for ease of application and a superior finish, Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer Sealer and Perma White Mould and Mildew paint from Michael Abbotts. This gives coverage with only two coats, whereas standard emulsions may take up to six. • Clear out gutters to make sure rainwater can drain properly, away from the timber structure. • Scotts of Thrapston stable doors have metal capping and galvanised metal windows as standard, but if yours aren’t protected, lace them with anti crib biting treatments. • Finally, look at the practical issues such as adjusting any doors that don’t open or close properly, along with checking locks, bolts and hosepipes for damage. Once you have finished, all your hard work will be rewarded with a fresh outlook towards your horse and the environment you both live and work in. Now all that’s left to do is wait for summer…if it finally arrives! For further information please telephone 01832 732366 or email equestrian@scottsofthrapston.co.uk

Equine Cushing’s Disease Words by Pauline Williams BSc, MSc, MA, Vet MB, Cert EM ( Int Med) MRCVS

E

quine Cushing’s disease (ECD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed endocrine (hormone) disorders in horses. In recent years it has become more recognised for two reasons; horses are living longer and there has been more research into the condition due to its link with laminitis, leading to increased owner awareness. It is not a new condition; horses have been diagnosed and successfully treated with the same medication for over twenty years. However, it can be confused and even co exist with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) which is a relatively recently diagnosed disorder relating to increased metabolic efficiency and obesity that develops in young to middle age horses often resulting in laminitis. Cushing’s disease tends to be seen more commonly in animals over the age of 15, although it can occur in the younger age group. Various studies show differing results on its prevalence in horses and ponies and there is no confirmed sex predisposition.

Aetiology (Cause)

Cushing’s disease is caused by an enlargement of the region of the pituitary gland known as the pars intermedia which is located at the base of the brain. Hence the alternative name of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). The pituitary gland secretes and/or stores many of the hormones that are responsible either directly or indirectly for the body to function. It is thought that age related oxidative damage to the nerves regulating the pituitary gland leads to overproduction of its derivatives including excess production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) that in simple terms regulates cortisol (the stress hormone) . Many predisposing factors have been implicated more recently including obesity and EMS earlier in life and environmental factors such as diet, although there is little data to support this at present.

Diagnosis

“Classic” clinical signs such as hair coat changes can be diagnostic for the condition. However laboratory diagnosis by your vet is important in confirming suspect cases and assessing the response to treatment. Hoof changes There have exhibited in chronic been several laminitis cases laboratory tests used over the years some involving the assessment of cortisol levels following the injection of specific drugs. The current most commonly used diagnostic test involves taking a single blood sample to assess the resting plasma ACTH concentration. False positives and negatives can occur and there is a natural variation of ACTH throughout the year so seasonal adjustments are necessary. The measurement of insulin and possibly glucose levels is also important as many cases will show evidence of insulin resistance which leads to high levels of circulating insulin in the blood. Several studies have shown that raised insulin levels can induce laminitis. Development of a more reliable diagnostic test especially to detect the early stages of Cushing’s is the researchers challenge.

Treatment

Clinical signs

A wide variety of clinical signs have been reported but it is important to recognise that the horse or pony may only show one of the signs (such as laminitis in the absence of hair coat changes) as the disease has a long and slow onset: • Hair /coat changes – long shaggy coat (hirsutism), curly coat, failure to shed or grow a coat at the appropriate time ( the horse may shed normally in the spring but then regrow a another coat in the summer). The coat quality may become coarse and discoloured. Weight loss/ Abnormal fat redistribution - pot bellied and loss of top line due to muscle catabolism sometimes with polyphagia (increased appetite) • Laminitis – recurrent, non responsive cases, sometimes the hind feet are severely affected. • Recurrent infections – sinusitis/tooth root infections • Delayed wound healing and skin infections • Polyuria (increased urination) and polydipsia(increased thirst) • Excessive sweating • Periorbital fat pad bulging • Lethargy and poor performance • Increased susceptibility to parasites among others

There is no cure for Cushing’s disease but it can often be managed effectively for many years .The treatment of choice is oral administration of pergolide. Pergolide acts by inhibiting hormone production within the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland which in turn lowers circulating ACTH and other hormone levels. The main clinical side effect is a transient anorexia and depression when the drug is first introduced in some animals. However this can be overcome by reducing the dose rate and gradually reintroducing it over a period of time in most cases.

Management

Supportive care is important in the management of Cushing’s cases. These include: • Clipping of excess hair • Prompt and thorough treatment of all wounds and infections • Routine farriery • Routine dental checks • Routine vaccination • Appropriate worming programme • Appropriate dietary management to maintain correct body condition. Feed news

Feeding for Weight Control and Laminitis

Some horses and ponies are ‘good doers’ and no matter how carefully you control their diet and exercise, they seem to have an ever expanding girth. There are a variety of different feeds and supplements available to help the laminitic prone horse or pony and here we take a look at some of them. All the companies featured have telephone help lines, so if you need more advice or just want to check that you are feeding the right product, give them a call. Rowen Barbary Forage ‘n’ Fibre Many good doers are often put on a restricted diet with a limited amount of grazing so are frequently lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements. However, it is vital that a well balanced diet is fed. Forage ‘n’ Fibre will provide a low energy diet of natural forages and fibres that is well balanced in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements so you can be sure that a fully balanced diet is fed, helping support overall health and vitality. As it contains no cereals and is very low in starch and sugars it is well suited to horses that suffer from laminitis as well as good doers that need a low calorie diet, but it will also help to provide a low energy, non-heating diet for horses that tend to get excitable. The high fibre levels will help to maintain gut health and Soya oil is also added for coat and skin condition.

of key nutrients such as biotin are just the same, as we know they work,” says technical manager Katie Williams, who is responsible for creating this low-calorie formulation. Healthy Hooves Molasses Free contains just 2.5 per cent sugar, which is found naturally in the fibrous ingredients. “even straw and alfalfa contain some sugar – feed is rarely, if ever, sugar-free,” Katie adds. Starch levels are also extremely low, at just 1.5 per cent, because the feed is completely free from cereals or grains, which are the main source of starch in mixes and cubes. These low levels of sugar and starch – less than any other complete fibre feed on the market – make Healthy Hooves Molasses Free the safest option today for horses and ponies that are prone to laminitis. www.dengie.com

Mollichaff Alfalfa Light Mollichaff Alfalfa Light is a high fibre forage made from pure alfalfa blended with high quality oat and wheat straw, fibre pellets and molasses, to provide a great source of highly digestible fibre for all types of horses and ponies. It is a low energy fibre source which makes it ideal for horses and ponies that are overweight or those requiring a low energy diet. It is low in both starch and sugar making it safe to feed to laminitics. The low level of energy that Mollichaff Alfalfa Light provides comes from the fibre that it contains. This is ‘slow-release’ energy and because of the low levels of sugar and starch, it will not cause the fizziness or excitability associated with grains. Visit www.horsehage.co.uk before 30th June 2013, click on ‘Competition’ and fill in your details to be in with a chance of winning five bags of Mollichaff Alfalfa Light.

Improved Laminaze has been reformulated so that the unique, totally natural formula now has increased benefits. Whilst supplying nutrients to support the health of the hoof and those rich in antioxidants to flush excess toxins out from the system, improved Laminaze offers additional nutritional support specifically for the health of the gut. So the good news is, if your horse or pony is prone to laminitis you can make an important contribution towards improving his diet by ensuring new Laminaze is part of his daily feed. If you know your horse or pony is prone to laminitis, nAF recommend you introduce Laminaze into his diet in good time prior to the particularly high risk period of spring and the appearance of the new lush spring grass – this will help to prepare his system, and importantly, make sure Laminaze is well established as an integral part of the feed and management regime. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

This latest addition to the dengie range – with a splash of rape seed oil added to replace the molasses – has been developed following requests for a molasses-free feed from customers. “Levels

Feed news Vetrofen Laminitis is a debilitating condition caused by inflammation of the laminae and causes lameness and fatigue within the hoof. While prevention is obviously better than cure, once a horse or pony is suffering from laminitis, managing their pain and discomfort is imperative to their wellbeing and recovery. Vetrofen is the number one vet-approved 100% natural alternative to Devil’s Claw for horses and does not contain phenylbutazone. It works by assisting the body’s natural inflammatory response, supporting the metabolism of the horse and stimulating enzymes to assist with the body’s natural inflammatory response. Vetrofen also contains important antioxidant properties to maintain comfort and flexibility and support joints, muscles and tendons for optimum mobility. Vetrofen is formulated using Specially Optimised Bio-Available Formula (SOBF) technology and unlike many chemical-based formulas, it does not simply mask symptoms of laminitis. The scientifically proven ingredients provide fast, natural, side-effect free, long lasting results and work with the body to optimise and maintain the inflammatory response without effecting organ function. Visit www.animalife.co.uk for terms on money back guarantee.

Equine America Lamigard Lamigard is a highly effective supplement for the horse or pony which is prone to Laminitis, and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. Lamigard will ensure your horse’s feet stay healthy all year round and will complement a careful feeding regime. It contains powerful ingredients to help mop up excess free radicals which settle in the feet, supporting a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and providing nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition. www.equine-america.co.uk

Blue Chip Lami-light Horse owners often think that feeding horses and ponies to control their weight simply means cutting down or giving them no hard feed at all. It is imperative however, that they still receive the correct level of vitamins, minerals and nutrients on a daily basis to ensure they are not lacking in any of these essential components in their diet. Adequate amounts of fibre should also be fed to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Hay can be soaked to reduce the calorie content and still allow a sufficient amount of fibre in the diet to ensure a healthy gut. Feeding a low calorie, low sugar, low starch feed balancer, such as Blue Chip Lami-light, is the ideal way to ensure horses and ponies receive the correct level of vitamins, nutrients and minerals on a daily basis without encouraging any weight gain. The whole-cereal and molasses free formula contains a respiratory supplement and a comprehensive hoof supplement, formulated with biotin, zinc and methionine. The prebiotic in Lami-light helps to remove harmful bacteria from the gut, whilst the probiotic yeast helps to maintain good digestive health and

promote a healthy environment for the beneficial bacteria to thrive. Lami-light is the ideal feed balancer for laminitis prone or over-weight horses and ponies as it will not encourage any weight gain but will still ensure they get everything they need in their diet. Many cases of laminitis are thought to be caused by toxicity in the gut and this is where Blue Chip Lami-light can really help to maintain optimum gut health by removing pathogenic bacteria and helping the beneficial bacteria to proliferate. www.bluechipfeed.com

The Best Friend™ Standard Grazing Muzzle The Best Friend™ Standard Grazing Muzzle attaches to your own leather or breakaway halter, with four adjustable hook-and-loop straps. To attach, loop the four straps over the noseband and chinstrap. (The two side straps may be looped through the halter rings for added stability.) Available to fit MiniMini to Large Horse. www.charliesproducts.co.uk

TopSpec Lite TopSpec Lite is the ultimate low calorie feed balancer designed for horses and ponies that need their weight controlled. These are usually good-doers that may be overweight and it is very important that this group of horses and ponies receive their full requirement of vitamins and minerals. TopSpec Lite provides a generous amount of these micronutrients in a small amount of exceptionally low-calorie feed. The feed balancer will help maintain excellent health and performance whilst improving hoof quality and promoting supple skin and a shiny coat. Long-term trials have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any additional weight when fed TopSpec Lite. The unique ‘NoGrain’ formula is low in sugar and starch and is ‘non-heating’. Lite can be conveniently fed straight from the hand. To compensate for the limited amount of nutrients wellfurnished horses often consume, TopSpec Lite has the added benefits of several supplements. These include an effective hoof improvement supplement and a broad spectrum supplement including powerful anti-oxidants to neutralise free-radicals and help maintain a healthy immune system. Shape Up with Saracen There has been much written about sugar and starch levels in horse feeds and forages because they play an important role in equine health. Feeds and forages vary in starch and sugar content and ‘high sugar’ feeds can be detrimental to horses because they may disrupt normal digestion potentially increasing the risk of colic and laminitis and exacerbate certain medical conditions such as muscle myopathies or Equine Metabolic Syndrome. However, there is also an increasing amount of misleading information available about the role of sugar and starch in the equine diet that is resulting in much confusion and panic amongst horse owners. We receive many feedline calls from people asking for feeds that are completely sugar free, as they want to eliminate sugar from their horse or ponies ration and yet they turn their horses and ponies out on a daily basis. Find out more about sugar and starch and ‘safe’ feeding for your horse or pony from Saracen Horse Feeds. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com

Feed news

Other Feed News... Aloeride for great hooves If your horse or pony suffers from poor hoof growth or crumbling/split hooves, then this can make it difficult to keep shoes on during the summer months. Aloeride is a pure organic and natural aloe vera supplement, which with its unique blend of nutrients could help improve your horse’s feet. By rebuilding hoof wall integrity, unwanted water ingress is halted, whilst beneficial hydration that should stay in, stays in. Ideal for problem shoeing, as well as for barefoot horses. Aloeride is an easy to feed ‘taste-free’ supplement, which offers horse owners additional support. Clinical trials have shown that aloe vera can boost hoof growth by more than 50% over a four-month period. And don’t forget that in supporting hoof growth, you’re also supporting the growth of healthy skin and hair too, in one small daily sachet of Aloeride. www.aloeride.co.uk

Easy Pack Rye Grass Haylage Getting your horse to the peak of fitness takes time, effort and an understanding of how his body works. Providing correct nutrition is essential in maximising your horse’s performance potential. Fibre can sometimes be over looked in the competition horse’s diet, but is as essential to the competition horse as any other. Providing high quality fibre in the form of Rye Grass Haylage not only ensures correct levels of fibre for a healthy gut, but also comes packed with high quality essential proteins, nutrients, vitamins and minerals. All this goodness in a fresh, sweet smelling, tasty form of forage that even the fussiest of horses will love to eat. www.easypackhaylage.com

Competition riders feed fibre and oil for calmer control Studies have shown that a fibre and oil based diet can encourage calm, responsive behaviour. That’s why WINERGY Equilibrium® is the choice for competition riders who want to enjoy performing at their best, including three day event rider Tom McEwen. Tom relies on WINERGY Equilibrium® for his fast, hot-headed and highly talented ex-racehorse Dry Old Party. He explains: “It

keeps him quiet but gives him the energy he needs to do top level eventing. It has also helped him gain weight, put top line on and given him a brilliant shine to his coat.” Traditionally cereals have been used as the main source of energy for competition horses but the downside is that their high levels of sugar and starch can result in unwanted fizz. Starch may also contribute to fractious behaviour if it is fed in excessive quantities as it can overwhelm the digestive system, causing acidity in the hindgut and subsequent discomfort. Hannah Briars, WINERGY® nutritionist, said: “Supplying extra energy from fibre and oil rather than cereals, allows the energy to be released and used more slowly, helping to reduce the risk of excitable behaviour. By fine tuning the fibre and oil blend you can deliver exactly the right type of energy your horse needs, when he needs it. This approach to feeding will also improve your horse’s health and quality of life.” WINERGY Equilibrium® feeds are formulated using a healthy, natural and highly palatable blend of fibre and oil. They contain over 20% of long fibre to encourage chewing and extend eating time. They supply safe, balanced and controlled nutrition for horses and ponies in every discipline and at every level, all conveniently from a single bag. www.winergy.com

NAF GastrAid Latest research is repeatedly highlighting the prevalence of Ulcers in horses, and, that’s not just in racehorses, but in your horses. NAF have responded with the research and development of GastriAid, a leading edge supplement to maintain your horse’s stomach in healthy, happy condition and support an ulcer free environment. Without a gastroscope it is difficult to detect ulcers in the stomach. However, there are ways of assessing that your horse might be prone, or showing signs of ulcer formation in his stomach. Horses that are kept stabled for long hours, eat a high grain diet, work hard and regularly travel are fairly high risk, especially if they are of a stressy, highly strung nature. There are also characteristic behaviourl patterns that may indicate the possibility of a stomach ulcer. These habits include: box walking, wind sucking, crib biting, a ‘cold back’ or displaying irritability when being girthed up, a poor attitude or unwillingness to work, whilst a dull coat or loose droppings can also be tell tale signs. New GastriAid is designed to naturally support the absence of ulcers in the stomach by defending the stomach wall from acid build-up and help maintain the pH balance in the gut, and thereby, providing daily protection from stress related gastric problems including ulceration. This advanced formulation has been created by world leading veterinary nutritionists. It contains antacids, pre and pro biotics, together with herbal support to provide daily protection and maintenance of the gut, at an affordable cost per day, and gives your horse, the stomach lining he deserves, to be able to work and perform in comfort and to the best of his ability. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

ProKalm is independently scientifically and clinically tested and does not sedate or affect gait or performance. Available in a tub giving approximately 5 weeks supply or as a single dose syringe. www.sciencesupplements.co.uk
