Welcome

23 I 28

t has been two months since I last sat at my desk to write my welcome, but it feels like the last two weeks have been responsible for some of the most memorable moments, Andrew Nicholson and Nereo winning the Mitsubishi Badminton Horse Trials, watching our local Badminton first-timer Tom Jackson compete, Nick Skelton and Big Star retiring at Royal Windsor and Barber’s Shop winning the Supreme Ridden Showing Championship, while being watched by his owner, Her Majesty the Queen. Royal Windsor has to be one of my very favourite shows. The setting is magical and everyone is just happy to be there, whether they are watching or competing. We have put together a report of local riders caught in action over the course of the five days and hope you agree it captures the eclectic mix of horses and classes the show invites. Turn to page 23 to find out more.

An emotional retirement

47 50

This year Royal Windsor will be especially remembered for the emotional retirement of Nick Skelton and Big Star. As the Queen watched from the Royal Box, fans crowded the seats and the ground outside the arena, to capture a glimpse of our greatest British Olympic show jumping partnership ever. Turn to page 26 to read more about Nick and Big Star. The outdoor show season is now well underway and we have reports from Horseshoes Riding School May Day Show, Show Jumping at Eaglesfield, Dressage at Plumpton College, as well as South East Trec at Beechwood Farm. There is a round-up of the Sunshine Tour qualifiers so far, plus a wonderful report from the Sue Webb Memorial Side Saddle Dash. Side saddle is becoming increasingly popular and it was lovely to read of local riders learning how to ride side saddle just so they could take part in the Dash. And now I hear they enjoyed the art so much, they are looking forward to competing side saddle at some shows this summer.

news Jonty Evans and Cooley Rorkes Drift pictured at Badminton

The thrill of sponsorship

D

r. Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi recently experienced the thrill of watching a sponsored rider compete at Badminton. She said: “It is wonderful when some of our sponsored/supported riders compete at the very top level. One in particular was Jonty Evans and Cooley Rorkes Drift (Art) at Badminton this year. With help from family, I was able to sneak up to the main arena to watch their dressage test. I was delighted with how they came in and started off and I found myself willing them to perform to their best. Looking relaxed and soft whilst being very accurate the good marks started appearing on the screen. As the test progressed, the 6.5s became 7s and 7.5s and the excitement built around me. The 8s started appearing as the horse became ever more focussed, elevated and through. From my perspective, seeing his back-lift and swing coupled with lightness and balance and outstanding canter work, made me very proud to see the results of the use of EquiAmi in action. The 9s that came in at the end of the test made me rather emotional and tearful; much to my surprise. To finish a close third (37.2) after dressage was an amazing achievement. A small but costly error in an otherwise faultless cross country round was followed by a lovely clear in the show jumping and clear evidence that podium places will be coming for Jonty and Art in the next few years given the sprinkling of luck that all horses and riders need to have. EquiAmi – very proud sponsors.” For more information visit www.equiami.com

Improve your seat through your feet Every rider loves to have a natural deep seat, but if you struggle to achieve this, have difficulty with your riding position or sometimes experience back problems, the cause may Heels down stem from your boots. Whilst in the saddle, your seat position is very much dependant on the position of your feet. The stirrup iron should be on the ball of the foot with your heels down. That makes you sit up straight. However, not all riding boots are designed in this way. If your toes are pushed up when your heels are down, then the stirrup Heels up iron will slide away from your foot, which makes it difficult to keep a steady foot position. Which can also cause you to tip forward in the saddle. Equitector riding boots are designed to be perfectly balanced for riding and you will instantly feel the difference. With your feet correctly balanced, your body will be in better balance, This pictures allowing you to sit deeper. shows the boot www.equitector.com in balance

The Trickle Net The Trickle Net is a highly effective tool for the dietary management of horses and ponies, especially those prone to laminitis. Horse owners are advised that they should not starve them, as this can do more damage than good. The Trickle Nets provide the perfect solution and encourages the horse to eat at a more relaxed and natural ‘grazing’ rhythm. The Trickle Net helps by slowing down the rate at which horses and ponies eat their hay, thanks to the robust small holes, which only allow small amounts of hay to be taken at a time and so prolonging eating time. This means the horse or pony can eat less but taking longer to eat it. Trickle Nets are made from 4mm rot proof braided polythene, meaning they are extremely strong and robust, prolonging the life of the net. Owners can fit up to 8.5kgs of dry hay in the Trickle Net which will last longer and removes the need to fill spare nets. www.tricklenet.co.uk LR Comment: This is an extremely well-made net. I liked the thickness and feel of the braided polythene, and can vouch for the extremely small holes. It is ideal for slowing down your horse or pony’s intake of hay. The net appears very robust and should stand up to a lot of use.

Back on Track Dog Rug Swedish company, Back on Track have developed their infra-red ceramic fabric, Welltex, into a range of rugs to support the mobility and well-being of dogs. The unique Welltex fabric is infused with ceramic particles that reflect longwave, infra-red ray. The body responds positively to the infra-red ray by increasing circulation, which can aid mobility and help avoid injury. The Standard Back on Track Hugo Rug is made from waterresistant and breathable black polyester fabric lined with Welltex. easy hook and loop closures at the front and under the belly make dressing your dog very straightforward. The Back on Track Hugo Mesh Rug forms better to the body’s shape than stiffer materials and therefore gives a much smoother fit. even dogs that sometimes don’t like wearing a coat will easily accept this light rug. Available in sizes Small to XXX Large with an RRP starting at £40.00. www.backontrack.com LR Comment: We tested the Back on Track Hugo Rug on Molly, an aged Labrador, who had started to slow down. Because the mesh rug is so lightweight we were able to leave it on her for most of the day. The results were remarkable. She seemed happier and more enthusiastic to take part in everything that was going on. She was less stiff and when outside insisted on walking much further than she normally would.

T

om’s family bought the now 14-yearold Waltham Fiddlers Find as a four, rising five-year-old from a local dealer, when Tom had outgrown his pony and they knew it was time to look for something bigger. Wes didn’t on paper appear suitable, he was big and green, but there was something about him and he was reasonably priced. Lots of lessons followed before the pair made their British Eventing debut in a BE90 at Tweseldown in the spring of March 2009. The Jet Set sired gelding didn’t disappoint, producing a dressage test of 25 to which they added some time penalties across country, but it was still good enough to finish seventh. Members of the Ashford Valley Pony Club, Tom and Wes competed in Pony Club events alongside BE competitions and although they missed out on qualifying for the Championships, they won five out of eight events.

Bramham International CCI*** under 25 competition. A third at Burnham Market CIC*** and sixth at Bramham again in the under 25 class in 2015, saw Tom and Wes invited to compete at the Senior European Championships at Blair Castle. Unfortunately, as we have seen happen to riders time and time again before a big competition, disaster struck, with scans revealing a tear in a suspensory branch. Wes was brought back into work the following year, but something didn’t feel right and further investigation revealed he had damaged the sesamoid ligament at the back of the pastern, resulting in him having nearly all of 2016 off. Finally back in work, the vets at Newmarket gave Tom the sign off to go ahead with Badminton 12 weeks before the event. The pair had three runs prior to Badminton including a good run at Burnham Market in the CIC***.

Winning a Gold Medal

Amazing experience

By spring 2010, the now 17-year-old Tom was competing at Novice level winning back to back events at Borde Hill and Stratford Hills. They ended the season winning the Junior one star competition at Weston Park. The following year, 2011, they were barely out of the ribbons, a season which culminated with a place on the Junior European Eventing Team and a team Gold medal. More medals followed, with a team Silver at Jardy in 2013 and a team Bronze at Vale Sabroso in Portugal in 2014, the same year the combination also won the

Tom admits being slightly overwhelmed at Badminton, as it is different from any other event you go to. He said: “It’s on a completely different scale, but it is such an amazing experience when you arrive and walk through the archway to the stables.” He was joined by his parents, Sara and Ian, sisters, Georgia and Lara and his girlfriend/groom, Sabrina Pryer, whom he credits with managing everything. Tom also had the support of Pippa Funnell, with whom he has been training on a weekly basis. He said: “Pippa has been very kind with her time and knowledge, helping

Pippa Funnell debriefing Tom after his dressage test. in the build-up to Badminton with how to manage Wes. She walked the course with me, gave me two dressage lessons at Badminton and warmed us up for the test.” Tom and Wes produced a lovely dressage test to start the competition in 31st position. Anyone who saw Tom’s cross-country round on television will know how annoying their blip at the Joules corners was. In one of the pictures we have seen Wes is happily jumping, but unfortunately is the wrong side of the flag. The rest of their round was faultless and Tom said: “He made everything feel really good and easy. I couldn’t be happier.”

Science behind the saddles Tom has two key sponsors, TopSpec, who he has been working with for a few years and new to the team this year, Fairfax saddles. Tom said: “I like them [the horses] to have the best of everything, they have the best possible feed and the best possible tack.” Tom continued: “It is so nice to have the support, technology and science behind the Fairfax saddles, girths and bridles. I have recently been involved in research into a new product they are developing and the research and science which goes into producing it is amazing.” Wes is now enjoying a holiday and Tom anticipates that he will probably be aimed for the four star at Pau at the end of the season and hopefully Badminton again next year. Tom concluded: “The aim now is for us both to get more experience at four star level.”

Kent-based 24-year-old Tom Jackson, headed to Badminton for the first time with his horse of a lifetime, Waltham Fiddlers Find, aka Wes. An error at fence 21 the Joules Corners was the only blip in their otherwise foot perfect round. We caught up with Tom to find out more…

FEATURE

Building a Riding Arena

Building an arena is a big investment for any horse owner, so it is important to do your research, to make sure you choose the right surface for what you plan to do and find the right contractor to build it. Here Mark Scott of Mark Scott Arenas shares a few of the key points you should consider, before making the final decision.

F

or any horse owner, building an arena at home is an exciting event, probably the result of years of dreaming and saving, so it is important that the build goes smoothly and you end up with the arena you dreamt of. It is always wise to speak to two or three different contractors. They should be experienced people, who will be able to advise you on the things you need consider, things which you may not have thought of. They may also be able to work with your budget, showing you areas where you might be able to save money to help pay for something else, such as a higher-grade surface. For example, if it isn’t necessary to have the arena fenced immediately, you could spend this part of your budget elsewhere and then have the fencing added, when you can afford it. Meeting the contractors when they come out to quote also gives you the chance to chat to the person you will be dealing with. Ask them about other projects they have worked on, most will also be able to arrange for you to go and view a previous project.

Planning Permission

Planning permission is required to build a riding arena. In general, the process takes three months and planning fees are ÂŁ385. Your contractor will be able to help you with your application, but it is important to factor in the planning process, when considering when you would like to have your arena built. A lot can be learned from a couple of hours on the internet, studying the different types of surfaces that arena companies offer. Time spent reading about surfaces can help you decide on the type of surface you want. Gone are the sand arenas of old, these days surfaces are mixed to a special formula. Lots

of research has gone into perfecting arenas for different disciplines, that are durable, stable and reduce impact on landing. It makes sense that a yard of show jumpers jumping 1.20m day in day out might need a different surface to a small pony jumping 50cm a couple of times a week, but do think about the longer term and what you see yourself using the arena for.

Building the foundations

just with anything in life the foundations and the time put in to preparing for the project are the most important factors. When choosing the stones for your foundations, freshly quarried, washed and graded limestones or ragstones are best, whereas recycled products often fail, due to their dusty nature. The quality of membranes used when building an arena

Picture taken at Julia Buckles Pole work classes. The arena at Pinewood Farm in West Malling has a Mark Scott Surface.

Words by Mark Scott can vary greatly and it is important to ask your contractor what membranes they use. Once you have decided on your contractor, the only hard decision you will have to make is which surface to use. Sand is the main ingredient of most surfaces, but its quality varies hugely. There are only a couple of quarries in the South east which provide good enough equisand to use with a synthetic fibre to provide a structured surface. unfortunately, we have been seeing an increase in the use of silica sand, which is not suitable for equine use.

Adding the surface

no equisand available today, will on its own provide a good enough surface to work a horse on, without either rapidly harming the sub-surface membranes or the horse’s limbs, with the added consequences of ugly stones appearing within the sand surface from the drainage bed beneath. equisand will need to have the correct fibres added, either off-site at a dedicated mixing plant or on site by experienced spreaders to get the fibres into 60-70 % of the overall depth of the sand. If machines are not set up properly this process will not be a success. This site mixed dry surface combination will provide a good surface, but for more intense usage a waxed surface will be required. Mark Scott Arenas provide a range of pre-mixed surfaces from our plant in Sussex, that are both waxed and non-waxed, suitable for indoor and outdoor use. We also offer the lower cost site mixed sand and fibre combinations, for lower intensity domestic use. There is a special feeling when you ride on your very own surface for the first time and we hope you find our advice useful in turning your dreams into reality.

We have the Cartier Queen’s Cup, held throughout May and June at Guards Polo Club in Windsor, to look forward to - it is one of the biggest polo tournaments in the world, and renowned for its fantastic sporting spectacle and elegant hospitality. Then there’s London’s Chesterton’s Polo in the Park, which brings simplified ‘City Polo’ rules and a smaller playing field to a series of tournaments in June, in Fulham. The celebs will no doubt be attending the famous Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup in June, which is held at Cowdray Park in Midhurst, West Sussex, and decides the British Open Polo Champions. And then there’s Hurlingham Polo Association’s International Day, which includes the International Polo event, and takes place in July at Windsor’s Guards Polo Club. What a series of exciting events we have in our region.

New on the market As a polo fanatic I am pleased to announce a new product to the Stephen’s range of leatherwork - we have just launched a new polo saddle, endorsed and used by world-class polo player, Gonzalito Pieres. Gonzalito Pieres is the sixth highest ranked player in the world, and is a ten-goal player. He won the 2016 Jaeger Le-Coultre Gold Cup, and was pivotal in the design, production and feel of the new Stephens saddle, which has been christened the ‘Gonzalito’. The sport’s origins

Although rightly recognised as the epitome of British sporting prowess, polo actually originated in Persia as the Iranian royalty’s cavalry training. As mounted armies began to travel the world, polo, arguably the oldest recorded team sport, was adopted as a noble pastime by kings, sultans and emperors. British officers went on to introduce a faster-paced version of the game to UK soil, having witnessed it in India in around 1869; a famous verse is inscribed on a stone tablet next to a polo ground in Gilgit, Pakistan that reads: “Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings.” Polo is now played in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Getting involved

If you want to get involved with this exhilarating game, but prefer your polo participation to be of the spectating variety, do not despair - you can easily enjoy the sport from the safety of the sidelines. Why not go along to a match to enjoy a day of thrilling sporting endeavour, drink in the adrenalin-fuelled atmosphere and watch the unique, harmonious relationship between horse and human? Divot stomping is famously a long standing tradition at half-time during polo matches; spectators wander all over the field stomping down the torn-up turf, and even at high goal tournaments, the leading players walk divots at the half time period. It is a past-time not to be missed - but ladies, do wear comfy shoes; wedges are ideal. JUNE 2017 Localrider 27

Improve your riding with the help of

A

Equicise

thletes in every sport recognise the importance of developing their fitness and technique in order to achieve better results and equestrians are no exception. Equicise, in Wimbledon Village, was established to help riders of all standards become the best riders they can be and has seen impressive improvements in clients who have included sessions on its equine simulator as part of their training. Equicise’s state-of-the-art simulator reveals riders’ strengths and weaknesses thanks to its advanced sensors which track position, balance, the accuracy of aids and the degree to which an independent seat has been developed. Equicise’s professional instructors will create a bespoke programme to address the individual needs of each client, with the computerised printouts that are available at the end of each session helping to monitor progress. Everyone’s body is, to a greater or lesser degree, asymmetrical, so it is unsurprising that a common fault among riders is a crooked seat. An equine simulator can pinpoint the problem areas, allowing riders to work on their position which, in turn, will benefit their performance as their horse will no longer have to try to compensate for an unbalanced rider. It is an invaluable tool for helping riders strengthen their core muscles and develop more flexible hip joints, both essential for an independent seat. Instructor Caroline Stevenson BHSI also credits the Equicise simulator with helping clients to refine their ability to give the correct leg aids, saying: “Unlike a real horse, which may try to guess

30-34-rrup-lrjune17.indd 4

what a rider is asking, the simulator only responds to correctly applied aids, teaching the rider to be more accurate.” As one satisfied customer says: “I can’t believe how much of a positive change one lesson made to my riding.” Any level of rider will benefit and your horse will appreciate the improvement, so a visit to Equicise would be time well spent.

with Vitamunch C ompetition days can often mean an early start and lots of hanging around. Whether you are competing, out for a lesson, clinic or at a camp, Munch blocks are ideal because they are a handy, tasty nutritional fibre snack to feed your horse when you are out and about. They come in airtight individual packs which keeps them fresh for over a year and also means there is no mess in the lorry/trailer.

Hiding away from the flies

When flies are at their worst, many horse owners choose to take their horses off the grass and keep them in a stable just to give them a break from the flies and midges. Having enjoyed fresh grass, the horses are not interested in last year’s hay so it’s a real dilemma as to what to give them whilst they are standing in. Hanging a munch block in a munch net will keep your horse occupied and allow them hours of nibbling time.

Portion control for the Fatties

With the spring and summer grass at its richest it can be a real challenge to keep weight off the ‘good doers’. Many owners are forced to take their horses and ponies in for considerable periods of time or consign them to the starvation paddock. Equine

Nutritional expert, Ruth Bishop, says that even in the case of the overweight horse or pony it is vital that they continue to be ‘trickle fed’ so that they have something in their digestive systems. Long periods without fibre can Munch blocks are handy to feed your lead to not only physical horse when you are out and about. problems such as ulcers, but also psychological problems where vices such as cribbing may develop.

Getting Ready for Show Time When preparing for a show, bathing and pampering can sometimes be a stressful and unpleasant battle. Feeding a munch block is a great way to keep your horse or pony occupied whilst you are plaiting up, washing, grooming and trimming. There is nothing worse than a fidgeting horse!

A Bad Traveller?

Try feeding a Calmmunch on the lorry/trailer. It has a two-fold approach to settling nerves - its magnesium and B6 enriched formula combined with calming herbs of chamomile, hops and vervain helps to calm – whilst its great taste makes it the perfect distraction.

Munch blocks are a unique healthy, high fibre, low calorie, low sugar, cerealfree snack, made from quality Timothy grass and enriched with essential vitamins and minerals, together with added horsefavourite herbs. Perfect for competition days, as an in between meal snack, reward or boredom breaker or for times when your horse needs extra support. Find out more at www.equilibriumproducts.com

HICKSTEAD PREVIEW

New arena named after Roger Stack T

here have been some notable changes at Hickstead ahead of this year’ international. Ring seven has been transformed and turned into The Roger Stack Arena, named in honour of Hickstead’s former showing director, who sadly died last December. The show ring has been Hickstead’s former showing smartened up with new director, Roger Stack, sadly died post and rail fencing last December. Ring seven has been down the long side, and renamed The Roger Stack Arena. the ground team at the All England Jumping Course are busy preparing the ground, adding drainage, over seeding and watering to ensure good going for competitors. There will also be a separate warm-up area and collecting ring for this arena, plus a hard-standing track leading down to the entrance of the arena, making it safer for horses, riders and spectators. The new ring means that the River Lawn will no longer be used for either show, and the classes that were held on the River Lawn have been moved to other rings, with many now being held in The Roger Stack Arena. Other changes include the transformation of the top of the Members’ Grandstand to become the Al Shira’aa International Riders’ Lounge and new Al Shira’aa VIP Suite, a modern hospitality facility. Another hospitality change for 2017 is the addition of the Ringside Terrace, a new viewing platform with its own bar and coffee shop. It is open to all show visitors and costs just an additional £5 on top of admission prices, giving equestrian fans a great view of the action in the International Arena for a very reasonable price.

Infrared technology gets everything

Back on Track

Swedish company Back on Track has pioneered the use of far-infrared energy. The company have developed their Welltex™ fabric with infrared technology into a sophisticated range of scientifically proven garments and braces for horses, humans and dogs. Scientific studies have found that this far-infrared energy aids circulation which supports well-being and mobility. Here we discover a little bit more about the origins of the product and why it is proving so successful. Fiona Bigwood, seen here riding Atterupgaards Orthilia, uses the Back on Track rugs and leg wraps daily on her horses.

M

any top riders have taken to using the Back on Track products. Local Olympic dressage rider Fiona Bigwood said: “We expect our horses to perform at the top of their game and I think it is important that we use the best products to help them do this. Our horses wear the Back on Track rugs and wraps daily.” Back on Track was founded by Swedish scientist, Dr Erland Beselin who developed his unique, Welltex fabric which has minute ceramic particles infused into it. These ceramic particles reflect a naturally occurring long-wave infrared ray back into the soft tissue, tendons and ligaments. This promotes mobility and wellbeing through increased circulation for the benefit of the wearer.

Where it all started…

Erland discovered the benefits of longwave infrared energy over two decades ago whilst travelling in China. He said: “We were given a gift of a pair of infrared knee wraps that had a very primitive design with loose threads.” The wraps were tried by one member of our group. Erland continued: “The man had a prosthetic knee following an ice-hockey accident as a teenager, he had for many years been in discomfort. The knee wrap gave him relief after a few days, when he stopped using the wrap the discomfort returned. The relief returned when he started using it again”. Erland’s background is in medical research. He added: “This result caught my interest and we decided carry out an evaluation.”

The very popular limited edition Blue Mesh Rug

The range includes hock boots Scientific studies into the effectiveness of longwave infra-red radiation have been undertaken in Japan, the USA and the UK that have established the effectiveness of long-wave infra-red radiation in aiding circulation.

The knee brace has been known to ease discomfort The riding gloves are comfortable to ride in, with a good feel on the reins.

Products for horses, humans & dogs

Each Back on Track item is beautifully made from top quality fabrics. The range is extensive so that nearly every part of the horse, human or dog can benefit from the Welltex fabric. Up and coming event rider, Tyler Cassells uses Back on Track rugs on his horses. He said: “My advanced horse, Machismo Star is sensitive. I have found since using Back on Track, he is more relaxed. If he starts a schooling session with muscles that are

The dog rugs are perfect for older, stiffer dogs or those who lead a very active life.

feeling loose and supple it enables him to work better. This is in-turn helping us to achieve a more consistent dressage performance.” Back on Track items are all very hardwearing and easy to apply and the horse, human or dog reaps the wellbeing benefits provided without doing anything different to normal. Simple and sturdy straps with hook and eye closures are all part of the allure of these wonderful products. Georgia Keegan of Back on Track said: “Back on Track has developed the capacity to infuse many different fabrics with the ceramic particles which provide the infra-red wave. This means that at Back on Track we have a good range of Welltex fabrics which can be used for products from our Mesh Rug right through to hock braces for dogs. No other company can offer this versatility and effectiveness.” For more information visit www.backontrack.com or email Georgia Keegan uk@backontrack.com

Choosing the right Joint Supplement

For supplements

With so many different joint supplements available, choosing the right one for your horse can be difficult. Here the team at VioVet share a few of their thoughts on how to go about choosing the right one.

For feed balancers

W

e all want our horses to have sound joints but due to the nature of modern riding and competing, joint health isn’t always guaranteed. Repetitive action places unnatural stress on bones and joints, which can lead to degenerative diseases and sudden injuries. Joint supplements are developed to support joint structures, ease mobility and promote the process of repair, but with so many on the market to choose from, how do we know what to look for and which to buy? • Start by asking yourself whether you’re looking for a joint supplement to help maintain long-term joint health or to ease an existing complaint. If it’s the latter, look for a supplement containing Green Lipped Mussel which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is widely recognised for its anti-inflammatory properties.

For show rugs & coolers

• For everyday joint supplements, look for the inclusion of Glucosamine (hydrochloride or sulphate) – a key structural component that supports the repair of cartilage, increases elasticity and thickens synovial fluid. Chondroitin sulphate has vital shock-absorbing properties, and Hyaluronic acid will help lubricate and cushion the joint.

For competition wear

• Other ingredients to look out for include Manganese, Turmeric and Boswellia serrata, traditionally used in herbal remedies for its anti-inflammatory properties. • If you intend on competing your horse, make sure you aren’t inadvertently ‘doping’ him with a prohibited herbal substance e.g. Devil’s claw is one ingredient that competition horses should avoid. If you are at all unsure, please refer to the BETA NOPS Scheme. • Avoid following a ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to giving your horse a joint supplement. Nutrient requirements will vary from horse to horse so always consider its age, weight and the severity of the problem (if one exists). VioVet stocks a number of tried-and-tested joint supplements, including many leading brands. If you need further advice on choosing the right one, feel free to get in touch by emailing support@viovet.co.uk or visit www.viovet.co.uk

TopSpec Lite provides a generous amount of these micronutrients in a small amount of exceptionally low-calorie feed. The feed balancer will help maintain excellent health and performance whilst improving hoof quality and promoting supple skin and a shiny coat. Long-term trials have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any additional weight when fed TopSpec Lite. The unique ‘NoGrain’ formula is low in sugar and starch and is ‘non-heating’. Lite can be conveniently fed straight from the hand. To compensate for the limited amount of nutrients well-furnished horses often consume, TopSpec Lite has the added benefits of several supplements. These include an effective hoof improvement supplement and a broad-spectrum supplement including powerful anti-oxidants to neutralise free-radicals and help maintain a healthy immune system. Pure protected yeast has also been added to help maintain a healthy hindgut environment. www.topspec.com

TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are very low starch and formulated to provide calories for condition (12MJ/kg) whilst being highly sympathetic to the digestive system, even when it is compromised by extreme acidity. UlsaKind Cubes are ideal in those circumstances where the internal surface of the stomach has been eroded, because they contain very high levels of ß-glucans which form a gel and coat the stomach lining with a protective film. The gel-like stomach contents are less likely to splash the upper squamous epithelium in the stomach. These ß-glucans also slow the rate of passage of feed through the stomach and intestines because of the sticky, gel-like consistency of the feed. In the stomach this means that the periods of time when the stomach is empty and therefore highly acidic, are reduced. Because the ß-glucans in UlsaKind Cubes bind to sugars in the intestine, their absorption is slowed and the glycaemic index of the feed is lowered. www.topspec.com
