Welcome 35 28 T

he summer, with all of its shows and events, seems to have come and gone in a flash, but at least September is still crammed full of shows, hunter trials and pleasure rides. If you are wondering what to do, then to page 77 and take a look at our Show Dates Guide. The middle of September also sees the Sunshine Tour Championships and having read about so many of you who have qualified I am looking forward to being there with my camera to capture the action. Talking of Hickstead thank you to everyone who called by and said hello at the Longines Royal International. It was a shame about the rain, but this didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of those who called in. Probably because there was so much to celebrate, each day was fresh and exciting. For me the highlight had to be watching James Burchell and Seamoor Lady Derby led by James’s father Oliver win the Supreme Pony Championship on Sunday morning. Turn to page 14 to read more about this inspiring combination, who now head to HOYS.

66

More celebrations! Not long after Hickstead there were more local showing celebrations when our cover star, Helen Baker, won the Supreme Ridden Hunter Championship at the Dublin Horse Show with Trudi Deja’s six-year-old Mossy. You can find out more about their special win on page 10. It is two months since we last went to print, so this issue is bursting with news, stories and photographs. Some riders are competing at their first show, while others are competing at the top of their sport, but what shows in each and every picture is their passion for horses. We hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we have. As always, remember to stay in touch. We love hearing your stories and the chances are we would love to feature you too. You can stay in touch through our social media channels, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or email fiona@localrider.co.uk

How well are your feet protected? Has your horse made a good impression on you? If not, you are one of the lucky ones. Foot injuries are one of the most common injuries at the yard. It all happens in a flash of a second, often resulting in, at best a bruise and at worst, a broken toe. Yet wearing properly constructed boots with toe protection would eliminate most of the risks. Boots made to the correct safety standards can withstand a compression in excess of 1,000 kilos, which is more than the weight of any horse. Equitector long and short boots all have steel toes, with many other unique features too. For more information please contact Equitector on 0208 0904029 or visit their website www.equitector.com

Pretty in pink for breast cancer awareness at Firle Place International Local eventer Jake Tarrant has been fund raising for a cause close to his, and his families heart: Breast Cancer. Riding Claire Penfolds seven-year-old grey gelding Dantastic in the BE100 at Firle International, he ditched his usual Red attire, to don the bright pink colours of his chosen Charity “Breast Cancer Awareness”. The generosity of the equestrian world has always been well documented, with many good causes and charities benefiting from its patronage, and this cause is no different. Jake said: “A huge thanks is owed to Peter and Suse Martin Turner from Spidge Event Photography for not only supplying all of the fund-raising images, but also for supporting Breast Cancer Awareness by donating a percentage of their takings from the event photography at Firle Place.” Jake continued: “For all of you who have donated, thank you.” For those of you that have not done so yet, but would like to, you can donate through the online account with “MyDonate” on the Little Bentley Eventing Facebook page, or go straight to www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/littlebentleyeventing#

s one of the UK’s leading Equestrian bedding supplier, Snowflake equine bedding have been supplying the equine market for over 40 years with quality animal bedding products. Their clients include grassroots riders through to national heroes who have graced the top podium at the Olympics. Michael Essue of Plevin Products, the company which produces the Snowflake brand says: “The range is fourfold and covers every aspect of what you may require dependent on the stable and your personal preference. Snowflake Supreme, the flagship bale, is made from 100% Softwood shavings, neatly packed into a 20kg dust removed bale. If you’re looking for something more economical without wanting to sacrifice quality, then Snowflake Soft-chip may just be the bale for you. We call it an “alternative” bale, as it began life as an alternative to Supreme to supplement supply at a time when we saw a significant growth in users. Again, made from 100% virgin timber but this time a wood chip instead of a shaving. But what if you don’t feel Supreme or Soft-chip are quite right for you? Well that’s where our Snowflake Standard joins the party. Standard in name only, this bale contains a blend of both Wood shavings and wood chip to give you the best of both worlds and economy to match. If all of the above still aren’t quite your bag, then how about a product that comes in bags? Our Snowflake Equine Pellets is the latest addition to the range and once again made from 100% softwood, this time in the form of an extruded wood pellet. Wood pellets when wet can expand to several times their size meaning less bags are needed to cover a stable floor. And because of their expansive nature they’re more than capable of drying a particularly wet stable.” The Snowflake range is sold nationwide and available in all good tack and feed shops.

Herd of the Hospice Herd of the Hospice is a major, free, public art installation organised to raise awareness for the charity Hospice in the Weald. July to September 2017, the herd of uniquely decorated horse sculptures will be exhibited across West Kent and East Sussex. It is possible to download a map from the charity’s website and go on a tour of Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Westerham, Pembury and Isfield to spot all the horses. There will be a prize for those who manage to spot the most. One such sculpture ‘Charter’ stands in proud position at the bottom end of the Pantiles. SPOTLIGHT Harriet Brown pictured with Oscar and Tiggy

Harriet Brown

Sussex-based Harriet Brown is living the equestrian dream. She currently works at Plumpton Racecourse, competes two horses and is renovating a house with land…

H

arriet Brown has an infectious enthusiasm for life. Her natural ability to see the best in every opportunity can be witnessed in both her personal and business life. Take for example, she and her partner James Baker are currently renovating a house near Herstmonceux. It sounds wonderful, set in threeand-a-half acres and once finished will be the perfect equestrian home, but at the moment it doesn’t even have a kitchen. This isn’t a problem for Harriet, who is currently cooking on a gas stove, she describes it like it is a special treat, adding that when the weather is good it is a bonus as she can cook outside. The same positive attitude shines through as she chats about her position as Marketing Executive at Plumpton Racecourse, a role she has been doing since last October. Responsible for all the raceday and non raceday marketing her brief includes racing, events, weddings, corporate hire and venue hire. Harriet is looking forward to her first ‘Family Day’ on 24th September, where as the name suggests there is something for everyone including a full card of racing. This is followed at the end of October by the Moorcroft raceday, this will be the 18th year the special fundraising day has been held at Plumpton and over the years it has raised £250,000 for Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre. Harriet and Oscar competing at Firle Horse Trials last year

A sprinkle of magic Whilst Harriet is responsible for marketing the racecourse she also understands how important it is for visitors to have a good time once they are there. At the Easter Meeting there was an Easter Bonnet competition for children to enter. There had only been five entries the previous year, so Harriet planned for 20, when 40 turned up this wasn’t a problem and with a wave of her wand she conjured up lots more prizes, so that every entrant went home with an Easter egg. With two National Hunt Meetings’ a month between November and April Harriet is looking forward to encouraging more visitors to enjoy a great day’s racing at Plumpton.

Racing Fanatics For Harriet who had previously had a freelance public relations practice and grew up riding with a mother and aunt who were racing fanatics, discovering the position at Plumpton was perfect. She said: “My mum (Ginny Freeman) and my late aunt (Frances Bates), used to make an annual pilgrimage to Cheltenham. I was always exposed to racing as the television had the racing channel on all day.” Harriet’s mother and aunt were also influential in her early riding career. When Harriet was seven they bought a pair of New Forest pony yearlings, Jack and Smuggler, from a stud in Ringwood. Three years later Harriet helped back them and for the next five years did everything on them. A member of the East Sussex Pony Club Harriet did everything including taking her ‘B’ test, but the ponies came into their own if someone had a whizzy pony that was too much for them, then she would be asked to bring her other pony along too for them to ride, as they were so safe and inspired confidence.

Both ponies are now living at Harriet’s mother’s yard. Smuggler, who has spent a number of years with Sophie Miles, is now retired, while Jack who spent five years with Frances’s granddaughter Georgia Brady, is still quite busy. He has a number of young riders he is introducing to riding (Phoebe, Albert and Lucy), as well as being hacked by local adults. There are seven horses and ponies living with Harriet’s mother and her stepfather and Harriet is very grateful to her mother for all

the help and support she gives her. Whilst Harriet tries to ride after work both in summer and winter, she said that her mum will most likely have mucked out and changed rugs. Harriet has two horses she is currently competing. Twelveyear-old Wishuwerehere aka Oscar. Harriet has owned the striking chestnut for four years and has done a bit of everything, eventing up to BE100 and representing Rother Valley Riding Club. Their team was second at the Riding Club Area Winter Show Jumping Qualifier, when Harriet and Oscar jumped three clear rounds. Harriet is also competing a homebred five-year-old called Tigerlily aka Tiggy. She is by the Connemara stallion Hillmead Cabaret out of a thoroughbred mare. She is currently doing lots of hacking and some dressage and will start jumping next year.

PLUMPTON RACECOURSE

Romantic proposal Harriet has lots to look forward to next year as while on holiday in Italy in July James proposed. If the location didn’t make the proposal romantic enough, James took a simple ring to propose with and now the couple are having an engagement ring designed. James chose the diamond and Harriet designed the band. The wedding will take place next August at Herstmonceux Castle with the reception in the field at their new house. Harriet hopes to have Oscar, Tiggy and Lenny her mother’s horse at the wedding, as well as Lucy Davey on Jack and her friend’s daughter on her pony. By then hopefully the stables will be built and the horses can happily munch on hay while the wedding party celebrate!

Worming for tapeworm...

Dr Corrine Austin, scientist and director of Austin Davis Biologics explains about the new saliva test for tapeworm… How do you know if your horse has a tapeworm burden that needs treating?

Horse tapeworm burdens are usually “silent” infections. You can’t tell by looking at a horse whether they have a burden and, it is not until tapeworm numbers are high enough to cause significant gut inflammation and blockages, that the horse will suffer either acute or low grade recurring colic symptoms. The horse tapeworm, Anoplocephala perfoliata, predominantly attaches to the ileocaecal junction in the gut which is a narrow section between the small intestine and the caecum, so it is no surprise that large burdens can cause health problems. Diagnosing tapeworm infections in horses has been difficult until recently, as tapeworms are not reliably detected by standard worm egg counts (WEC) due to the way in which they release eggs. However, saliva or blood antibody tests have been shown to be reliable and accurate*.

The saliva test for tapeworm

The EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test is easy to carry out using the specially designed swab supplied in the EquiSal kit. The swab is used to collect saliva until a colour change indicator turns pink to tell you when you have collected enough saliva to send back to the lab for testing. Results are emailed to you, along with a recommendation on whether treatment is required.

Why not just worm for tapeworm?

This is a common question as it is obviously easier to routinely worm horses. But it is increasingly important to avoid overuse of worming drugs. Horse worms are becoming resistant to several drugs used in this country which is a major problem because once resistance spreads, our drugs will no longer control worm infections and we will begin to see worm-related health problems emerging. International show jumper, Tim Stockdale, routinely tests the horses in his yard using EquiSal Tapeworm. During the last year, only three of his horses were diagnosed with a tapeworm infection. By testing before worming, only three doses of tapeworm wormer has been necessary and Tim has been able to only use wormers when they are needed. “EquiSal Tapeworm testing resulted in just three of the 20-plus horses at my stable needing treatment over the last 12 months. Keeping worming to the absolute minimum, keeps my horses healthy and reduces the risk of resistance to worming chemicals,” says Tim Stockdale. EquiSal Tapeworm testing over the last three years has shown that only a quarter of horses in the UK required treatment. This is a big reduction in wormers being used to effectively control tapeworm burdens in horses.

EquiSal Tapeworm results and worming recommendations

Horses are recommended for treatment when diagnosed with either a borderline or a moderate/high result (test accuracy published in veterinary journal*). Results are reported as ‘saliva scores’ where less than -0.09 is a low diagnosis, -0.09 to 0.6 is borderline and more than 0.6 is a moderate/high diagnosis. An average moderate/ high saliva score is approximately 16, but very high scores can reach into the hundreds. Regardless of the saliva score, any horse with a borderline or moderate/high result should be treated. It is recommended that horses are tested for tapeworm every 6 months at a time when you would normally consider worming for tapeworm. If a horse is diagnosed with a moderate/high burden a repeat test can be carried out two to three months after worming to determine if an additional treatment is required.

Save wormers for when they are really needed

JACK’S STORY Jack has been with his current owner for 13 years and in the past was routinely treated for tapeworm twice a year. After Jack’s first EquiSal Tapeworm test in 2014, it came as a shock to his owner when he was diagnosed with a moderate/high infection. Jack was wormed and three months later tested with EquiSal Tapeworm when he was again diagnosed with a moderate/high burden. He received a second worming dose and was tested after a further three months, using both the blood test and EquiSal Tapeworm. Both tests diagnosed a borderline result and Jack received another worming dose. EquiSal Tapeworm has since diagnosed Jack with a low burden for the last 18 months. Jack’s story suggests that he was likely to have been re-infected between his six monthly routine treatments, up until his first saliva test. The additional targeted treatment he received following his subsequent saliva tests ensured Jack’s tapeworm status was finally reduced to low. As well as testing/treating for tapeworm, Jack’s owner carried out good paddock maintenance, including regular poo picking and complete removal of muck from his grazing areas. By continuing to routinely test with EquiSal Tapeworm, Jack’s owner is now able to monitor for new infections and only use worming drugs when they are needed. Interestingly, Jack has had a history of colic but since his low burden diagnosis, he has been well.

Correct paddock maintenance helps prevent reinfection

The horse tapeworm requires an additional host to complete its life cycle – the oribatid mite that lives on grassland. The mite ingests tapeworm eggs from dung piles and larvae grow within the mite until the horse eats the mite while grazing. It is important to carry out routine paddock management, such as regular muck clearance, where muck is completely removed from grazing and adjacent areas, as well as field rotation and resting where possible. Routinely clearing muck from grazing areas will significantly reduce infected mite levels on paddocks and help prevent reinfection after worming. It is also important to restrict horses’ grazing while away from home, such as at show grounds. Lastly, ensure you know your horse’s accurate weight for correctly dosing wormers as under dosing can result in persistent burdens and continuous egg shedding. Although it can be difficult to influence management practices outside of your own field to prevent infection, it is best practice for horses in adjacent paddocks to be following the same worm control programme. Visit www.equisal.co.uk for more information on tapeworm in horses, to see a list of stockists or order a kit online. *Lightbody, K. L. et al. (2016) Vet Clin Path, 45: 335–346

My Mini Hackathon Hello everyone, my name is MFP, short for Mini Fat Pony. I am the Motivational and Education officer for Brooke charity, their first ever equine role. I have a monthly column #ShetlandSunday on their Facebook page where I tell people about the challenges faced by working horses, donkeys and mules in developing countries. This year I’ve got more involved in fundraising - in April, I was chosen to visit Wimbledon Village Stables to collect a cheque for Brooke, so I dressed up especially (see above)! During the summer I was busy doing my own fundraising, I signed up to #MyMiniHackathon - doing 10 miles in 100 days to raise money for Brooke. This is a special event for little legs like mine but there is a bigger version called #MyHackathon where you ride 100 miles in 100 days to raise £100 for Brooke, and lots of people are doing this with their horses. I’ve walked round the fields, been to the village shop and to the beach - yes, I went paddling, all to support Brooke, Action for Working Horses and Donkeys. It’s been hard work but I’m helping animals less fortunate, so if you want to sponsor me, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mini-fat-pony

SEIB Making the Difference… SEIB Insurance Brokers will grant £50,000 to a charity early next year and is asking its clients to choose where the money should go. They have until 31st December 2017 to make their decision. SEIB Chief Executive Officer Barry Fehler explained: “We don’t want to dictate to our clients which charity they should support; we want to find out about the good causes they actually believe in.”

£100 million for good causes SEIB is an independent broker but is ultimately owned by a charity called the Allchurches Trust Limited and profits are used for good causes. The aim of SEIB’s immediate owner, the Ecclesiastical Insurance Office Plc, is to give £100million for good causes through the Allchurches Trust by 2020. The results from the 2017 poll of clients will be analysed to create a shortlist of

charities with the most votes and fit the criteria of the award. The £50,000 will be donated to a small-to-medium size charity where it will truly make a difference. The shortlisted charities will be contacted by SEIB so that they can describe their plans for the £50,000, should they be fortunate enough to be chosen for the award. Once the responses have been analysed and it is confirmed that the charities meet the remit, SEIB clients will be asked to vote again for the final winner.

Make a difference

“SEIB is a national company that has insured numerous charities for a long time and we want our giving to reflect that,” said Mr Fehler. “This is an incredible opportunity for a good cause to have an amazing 2018 and we want our clients to share with us in the choice. The aim is to give the money to a charity that will use the sum for the

major part of capital investment on just one project”. “SEIB really wants to make a difference — for example, £50,000 could fund a new sensory room at a children’s hospice, a kennel or stable block for an animal charity or for a homeless charity to purchase more facilities. The choices are endless and we want to hear from our clients on what, in their opinion, is the most worthy cause.”

Awards ceremony

The chosen charity will be invited to come and accept their grant at an awards ceremony early in 2018 and there will be a draw for tickets to attend the event amongst those that voted for the winner. Mr Fehler hopes that this is just the beginning. SEIB is looking to increase the amount to £100,000 through 2018 and charities will once again have the opportunity to be a favoured cause.

To Shoe or Not to Shoe? Words by Ian Davies DipWCF AEP, qualified, experienced and registered Farrier based in Marlborough, Wiltshire In the last issue we introduced Marlborough based farrier Ian Davies. During his 25 years’ experience Ian has been chief farrier to the Saudi Royal family and worked at Northern Farm in Japan and for the Sultan of Oman. Ian believes in providing the best care for each horse, whether this is going barefoot or wearing shoes. In some cases, it will be a mixture of both, perhaps fitting shoes at certain times of the year or as the horse’s workload changes.

The sole and toe wall structure are most obviously failing to resist moderate natural wear and tear which we would expect in these circumstances and whilst living out at grass. The youngster is due to come in and will be broken to ride and brought into training. Due to the damage we can see in the image and the inability of the hoof to resist the natural wear and tear we would expect, the decision to shoe this youngster is an obvious one.

Despite the sustained and upward trend of keeping horses barefoot there is still controversy around this method of hoof care. In the first part of his article ‘To Shoe or Not to Shoe?’ Ian explains a little about this controversy and then takes a look at a recent case study.

Making the Right Choice

The two most common statement Ian hears are:

1. The use of shoes for protection when wear of the hoof exceeds its growth. (Illustrated here).

• “ Advantages in terms of both health and economics are clearly obvious in favour of barefoot.” • “Shoeing horses is an absolute necessity if one intends to ride regularly.” Whilst there has been much research in to hoof physiology and various studies of the barefoot horse there are too many variables to take into consideration with each individual horse to use the results of these studies as a remedy for all. As the case study below will reveal the most important thing for the farrier to do, is to start by looking at the horse’s hooves, before making any decision about whether ‘to shoe or not to shoe’.

Examples such as this one make our decision-making so straightforward. Whilst I must confirm that I am in favour of leaving shoes off when circumstances allow, there are three reasons that make shoeing the most advantageous and beneficial choice:

2. The need for traction in any sports horse undertaking athletic activities, such as racing, show jumping, polo, cross country or any other activity on grass. 3. Therapeutic reasons: - to treat lameness - diseases - to address limb conformation The equine hoof is resilient and adaptable

part 1

and yet the photograph shown suggests otherwise. This is a young, healthy, unbroken thoroughbred enjoying acres of good pasture, company and expert management. It must be noted that most of the accompanying group showed varying degrees of the same condition – bruising and lack of wall at toe and surprisingly no signs of lameness or sensitivity. The owner and I concluded that the 30 acres of pasture, despite plentiful grass, was rock hard and unforgiving after the recent hot, dry spell. This is compounded by being on our local ‘Chalk Downs’ which we know is loaded with hard ‘flints’ that tend to surface during dry spells. Barefoot management techniques could have been possible in this scenario, but it was not deemed to be practical or beneficially efficient for the horse. Preparing and conditioning both owner and hoof to go ‘bare-foot’ is an in-depth subject that is worthy of quite some detailed dialogue. I will go into this in more detail in part two of ‘To shoe or not to shoe’ in the next issue. Ian works in the Wilshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire areas, but is happy to travel. Find out more about Ian at www.farriery.co or visit his facebook page @IanDaviesandCoFarrier.

Case study

Let’s look at a horse I saw recently on a first visit to a new client. The photograph (right) is of the right fore hoof of a four-year-old. It was taken after a preparation to shoe fitting. This horse has been bred and is owned and managed by an experienced and reputable breeder. He is not lame or even sensitive. He has not had any previous lameness history and has never been shod. He is currently living out as you would expect for an unbroken youngster and lives in company in a 30 acre field. What the image shows us is that the hoof has: • a weak and broken wall, especially at the toe – toe area, front of hoof • e xtensive bruising to sole – sole of foot (red bruising) • b ruising to a point proximal right of frog apex – the frog apex is the point of the frog so there is bruising to the right – shown by a small reddish mark • t rauma to medial third of sole, parallel to medial wall – the black section on the sole

This is the hoof of un-broken four-year-old who is currently living out. Refer to the article for more information.

Top Tips for a Healthy Stable Environment Kick the Yard into shape BEFORE

AFTER

David Jeffrey’s of Stable Shield, The Leaders in Equine Biosecurity offers advice and tips on keeping your stable a bacteria-free zone…

I

t is crucial that horses are kept in a clean environment as it assists with their respiratory system and overall wellbeing. Therefore, it is extremely important to take every possible precaution against the spread of bugs and bacteria. Here are a few top tips to ensure your stable provides the best environment it can for your horse:

➤ Your stable is a good place to start and a thorough clean is a great way to provide a hygienic environment which is healthier for your horse. ➤ Clean stables thoroughly on a regular basis. Remember that the more often horses are kept in stables, the more they will need cleaning. ➤ Start by lifting and removing any rubber matting and thoroughly wash them using a stiff brush, water and disinfectant. Then do the same for the floor of the stable, and also the walls and doors. ➤ Use a strong brush to sweep the floor. Use the brush to knock down spider’s webs and dust as well. ➤ A pressure washer is ideal for lifting dirt and grime and giving a powerful water supply to produce a great finish. Let the floor and mats dry and the stable air before replacing the mats. ➤ Add new bedding to replace any that has been removed. If there is thick rubber matting on the stable floor, bedding can be thinner. ➤ Periodically, you should completely strip the stable. You may want to put down some odour control solution or stable disinfectant. Make sure the floor is dry before you add the new bedding. ➤ Clean your horse’s water and feed buckets, removing old food and water and scrubbing the buckets. ➤ Keep on top of small jobs like squeaky doors, loose bolts and flickering lights. Simple repairs will keep you abreast of overall maintenance issues. ➤ Remember to put your tools away so they don’t create a trip hazard.

➤ Feed rooms and hay stores can always do with a good tidy up so give them a good sweep and remove any cobwebs. Check that all feed bins are in good working order and regularly check rodent traps if you have them. ➤ If you have any plants or grass around the yard, make sure they look smart by weeding any beds and mowing the grass. Hanging baskets with dead plants in should be emptied and potted up with new ones. ➤ For a long-term solution, use new Stable Shield Anti-Bacterial paint on walls and ceilings, as it helps prevent the spread of bacteria by up to 99.8%. It is ideal for all yards including stables, tack rooms, feed rooms, newly built yards and hay barns. ➤ Stable Shield Antibacterial Paint, is a water-based non-toxic paint that can be applied to stables to create a fully disinfected yard. The paint prevents the growth of bacteria on all applied surfaces. This in turn creates a clean environment which is crucial to help horses with their respiratory system and overall wellbeing. ➤ The range includes Stable Shield BASE, Stable Shield PLUS and Stable Shield Anti-Bacterial Stable Paint. The active ingredients last up to three and five years plus depending on the environment.

Taking charge of the Tack Room

➤ Next look at your tack room and if necessary give it a clean and tidy up. It is a good idea to sort out all of your rugs and send the winter ones for washing and then bag them up to put in storage. ➤ Your equipment may need a good sort through as well, so that items that will not be used throughout the summer can be washed and put away ready for next winter and vice versa. ➤ Take out your lighter rugs and ensure they are all in good working order and ready to use. If you will be competing this summer, check your kit and make sure you have everything you need and all is in good condition. ➤ If there is a list of emergency contact details, make sure that everything is correct and alter if necessary - if you don’t have a list, it is very wise to make one.

T-bars have shortened pins above and below the bit. The Snaffle T Bar 3 Ring is pictured.

What are T-bars?

T-bars are the invention of Loriner Bomber Nel, as a development of the Fulmer or Full Cheek. Due to his interest in Polo, Bomber created the T-bar cheek piece as a safer option to ‘full size’ Full Cheek bits, because in a polo ‘ride off’, sometimes contact is made as far up as the horse’s head, and the longer ‘Fulmer’ arms could become tangled up in the other bridle. Bomber Nel designed the T-bar with shortened pins above and below the bit, to help prevent pinching on the sides of the mouth, however he made the cheek pieces with a loose ring fitting, which allows for immediate ‘release’. The shorter pins are immeasurably safer.

What are the blue ‘rubberlooking’ bits made from?

Bombers Bits may be famous for their blue sweet iron Bomber Blue bits are made from a technologicallybits, however the advanced rubber-nylon compound. The ‘Bomber Blue’ bits Kimblewick Bomber Blue is pictured. are not metal at all, and they’re also not rubber. They’re constructed from a unique, technologically-advanced rubber-nylon compound that’s warm to the touch. It is a great alternative to vulcanite bits, and we think of it as a non-metal-metal. This ‘elastomer’ type material is extremely ‘chew-resistant’ with, in engineering terms, ‘exceptional tear and abrasion resistance’. This special outer material promotes salivation, and as a result gives the horse a softer mouth. ‘Bomber Blue’ bits are moulded around a stainless steel core, which increases the strength of the mouthpiece and removes the possible weak points ideal for horses with sensitive tongues.

What’s a control plate?

The Control Plate was again developed by Loriner Bomber Nel. While a central plate is not new, Bits with the Control Plate the Control Plate are set at 45° to follow the is set at 45° to contour of the horse’s tongue. follow the contour The Full Cheek is pictured. of the horse’s tongue. The well-established Dr Bristol central plate for example sits horizontally, with the edge of the plate on the tongue - but Bomber sought to innovate the concept, and create a central plate that was more ergonomically comfortable. A horse who uses his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control will generally ‘draw back’ when a Control Plate bit is used, and tuck his chin in.

Innovations in

bitting

Stephen Biddlecombe of SB Bits discusses some interesting innovations in the field of lorinary… young horses; TRUST Equestrian Equipment has innovated a fine range of leather bits with a core of reinforced nylon. The leather that is stitched around the Leather encourages more core is naturally tanned salivation, so it is a popular without chemicals; material for young horses. the saliva production softens the leather, and makes it more pleasant for the horse. The end result, is a flexible mechanism, in terms of the bit engineering, and a soft, warm taste. Need a special bit? Try our ‘design a bit’ bit service from Bombers Bits: a wide selection of mouth pieces, cheek pieces and widths. Call 01825 841 303. Got a bitting query? Email info@equineman.com and we will feature it in a future issue of Localrider, as well as helping you with your enquiry.

SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth

Innovations from TRUST

Another good innovation is ‘Inno Sense’ - a synthetic material without plasticisers, that’s non-toxic. Although there’s a wide range from Trust Equestrian, I like the bits in the ‘Flexi’ range, which wrap around a core of stainless steel. We stock several Mullen versions, e.g. without joints. Horses that are ridden with Inno Sense bits tend to follow the rider’s hand easily, and accept the bit smoothly. I often get asked about leather bits. OK, so leather isn’t an innovation per say, however the newer versions of this traditional material are highly engineered with other materials, and offer a good bitting alternative for sensitive horses, or those with allergies. Leather encourages more salivation, so it is a popular material for

Feature Lungeing for Autumn fitness Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi Ltd says: “Most people think lungeing is for rehabilitation or competition horses but think how much more fun you could have if your horse was better balanced and had core strength and lightness. Lungeing helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch across the back and engage his hind quarters whilst moving freely. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching whilst enhancing the topline and improving balance and paces. Good aids, like the EquiAmi lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand and core strength. As Autumn approaches take the opportunity to try lungeing once or twice a week. If you make it a regular part of your routine you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements you can make and the time you can save as the days shorten.” www.equiami.com

Understanding

Laminitis Words by Kate Hore RNUTR (Animal) Senior Nutritionist at NAF

L

aminitis can be triggered by many different situations and involves a dramatic chain of events. Obesity and the intake of rich grass – especially with autumn flushes - are the most common, leading to starch overload. The chain of events leading to Laminitis most commonly begins in the gut; it is this area that must be supported by both dietary means and good management. The horse’s gut is designed to slowly digest highly fibrous material and cannot cope with a sudden influx of rich nutrients. The majority of rich nutrients end up in the hind gut which the horse tries to break down, however, toxins are produced during this process which can create holes in the hind gut and then the toxins are released into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream these toxins attack the capillaries of the laminae causing tissue death. This can result in both sensitive and insensitive laminae ripping apart and the pedal bone dropping out of position in severe cases. In order to offer support, it is important that a good management regime is enforced. Restricting grazing and keeping to a suitable exercise programme is necessary, as exercise burns calories and promotes circulation around the feet. This will help to donate the essential nutrients for repair to these areas in need, while helping to maintain the integrity of the laminae and the blood vessels that serve them. When looking at the diet, feed little and often and do not be

encouraged to starve a laminitic as this will lead to glucose peaks. Important aspects in the diet to consider, include a high fibre intake with a low starch diet. There are some key ingredients that can help through supplementary support: • F eeding Naturally Sourced Concentrated Antioxidants help to flush free radical toxins from the system • M SM (methyl sulphonyl methane) is necessary for the health and structure of the laminae • M agnesium helps to control glucose enzyme reactions and stabilise cell walls against free radical attack. Supplementing with Magnesium has also been seen to help reduce cresty necks • P re and Probiotics are essential and help support the beneficial bacteria needed for good gut function • B entonite Clay helps to slow down the passage of food through the diet and therefore helps to prevent the rushes of digestion that then can lead to a rise in glucose With a good management regime enforced, strict dietary controls with support offered through supplementation, this all can help in working towards preventing Laminitis.

Road Safety for horse riders

“VioVet have never let me down, they give excellent service at extremely reasonable prices” -Deborah, customer since 2014

For Hoof Supplements

With autumn approaching, Hannah Dyball of VioVet Limited shares some safety tips for autumn riding…

I

n the UK, there are roughly 3 million horse riders and many of these use public highways to reach local bridleways or other off-road locations. Whether you live in the countryside or somewhere more suburban, there will come a time when every horse rider is forced to use the roads simply to get where they need to go, or even to exercise their horses due to a lack of bridleways or off-road riding in the area. We mustn’t forget that both horse riders and motorists are equally responsible for ensuring their safety on the roads, but what can you do, as a horse rider, to minimise your chances of having a road accident or near-miss when riding out this autumn/winter? ➤ Remember to always wear your high vis clothing and accessories, no matter what the weather is like or how good visibility is. Make sure your horse is wearing as much reflective gear as you are and can be seen from a good distance. If at all avoidable, try not to head out in darkness, snow, fog or torrential rain, or any other time when visibility is reduced. ➤ Only use highways if your horse is considered ‘road-safe’ and is accustomed to the sights and sounds of road traffic. ➤ If possible, get horses used to cars at a young age. This is best done away from the roads, in a safe and secure location, by asking a friend to drive slowly passed the field a few times so your horse comes to see that the car doesn’t pose a threat.

For Electrolytes

For Breeches

➤ Ensure you have a well-fitted helmet and that all your tack and equipment is in perfect working order. ➤ Avoid riding two abreast, especially on narrow country roads. If you have to ride side-by-side, return to single file as soon as it is safe to do so. ➤ Use appropriate hand signals to let motorists know what you are about to do. If you are turning left or right, indicate with the appropriate arm. Extend your arm to the side of you and move it up and down to tell motorists to slow down.

For Horse Boots

➤ Always remember to thank motorists when they slow down for you, allow plenty of space when they pass, give you right of way, or have patience to let you manoeuvre. Mutual respect is important on the roads and a simple ‘thank you’ goes a long way. Hopefully this will encourage motorists to repeat their actions when they next pass a horse and rider on the road. ➤ Invest in a hat or hack cam and tabard to let motorists know they are being filmed. The idea is that this will increase your safety as drivers will take extra care when passing you. The reflective tabard will also help illuminate you in low light. As a motorist, remember to always pass ‘wide and slow’ when you see a horse and rider - leave a car’s width between the horse and your car and approach at no more than 15mph - never rev your engine or press the horn, and always have patience and overtake only when there is time and space to do so.

FEED NEWS

What to feed this autumn?

Sometimes it is difficult to know just what to feed in autumn. Some horses will be doing less work now that the competition season is over, while others, particularly those going hunting, will be doing more. Whatever you are doing with your horse, we hope you find some useful advice here, and remember the feed helplines are only a phone call away.

Baileys Ulcer Feeding Solutions Controlling a horse’s starch intake has been shown to help manage those prone to gastric ulcers and Baileys now offer two market-leading options to help provide them with a fully balanced diet. For those with significant calorie requirements, Ease & Excel provides levels of calories, and other important nutrients, to support condition and performance to the highest levels. When forage alone seems sufficient as a calorie source, Performance Balancer provides those nutrients likely to be lacking, without unwanted calories. Both are low in starch, accredited by BETA, as being suitable for horses prone to gastric ulcers, and can be used individually or combined to give flexibility with dietary calorie levels. Ease & Excel fed at recommended levels can provide a high fibre, high oil, high calorie diet, while Performance Balancer, alongside forage – at controlled levels, if necessary – provides a low calorie option still capable of building muscle and supporting the hardest workloads. To find out more about feeding a fully balanced low starch diet, visit www. easeandexcel.co.uk/case-studies.html www.performancebalancer.co.uk

TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes are designed to provide balanced fibre for all horses and ponies. So, what is the plus? It is added ingredients to balance the fibre and promote muscle development and function. In most circumstances horses and ponies benefit from eating fibre in the form of long or chopped forage. However, there are situations where this is not possible and times when a low calorie cube is desirable. TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes are formulated to be very low in starch and sugar, which contributes to the cubes being the ultimate ‘non-heating’ feed. The digestion of the fibre in these cubes will however lead to a ‘warming’ effect in the hindgut, which is very beneficial to horses, especially veterans, in cold weather. The cubes are a blend of high-fibre and cereal-grain free ingredients, with high quality protein from high-oil soya and linseed. No straw products are included in the formulation. Sodium (from salt), calcium and magnesium are added to this blend.

NAF Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer NAF Five Star Optimum will help restore and maintain five star condition and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Concentrated and easy to feed, Optimum comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. Optimum is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate, or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that Optimum can be simply given on its own, directly from your hand. It is designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Equine America Turmeric Equine America Turmeric is already mixed with Linseed meal to provide Omega 3, combined with Calcium and Vitamin E, it provides support to the health of the joints, skin, digestive system and liver. www.equine-america.co.uk

Nettex In The Balance Nettex have launched In The Balance as part of their new V.I.P. range of products. V.I.P. In The Balance provides concentrated nutritional support in one easy to feed supplement. The formula is designed to meet your horse’s advanced nutritional needs for health, vitality and performance. In The Balance contains a concentrated package of vitamins, minerals and trace elements to improve the diet of both leisure and sport horses. Nutritional support of the gut is fundamental for horses’ health. In The Balance supplies probiotics and prebiotics to help optimise gut function and healthy digestion. Most horses do not receive a full ration of hard feed which means they can miss out on vital nutrients. In addition, vitamins and minerals are often low in preserved forage, such as hay or haylage, and where grazing is less than optimum. Even minor shortfalls can lead to poor performance or a lacklustre appearance. Feed In The Balance daily to ensure your horse receives essential nutrients required for a balanced diet to help him enjoy perfect health. www.nettexequine.com

TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support

New to Equine America, Bloom & Condition contains premium grade vitamins and minerals, in addition to digestive aids fortified with Echinacea and Turmeric. It has been specially formulated for optimum health and condition.

TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support contains an excellent specification of nutrients to help the development and maintenance of healthy joints. Synovial joints are stabilised by a complex network of tendons, ligaments and muscles in and around the joint, and by the joint capsule itself. In ideal circumstances, this enables joints to function smoothly and comfortably. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support is designed to help support joints subject to excess trauma and/or repeated wear and tear. It is particularly suitable for horses working hard and elderly horses. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support can be fed at a maintenance rate (half the recommended) to support healthy joints.

FEED NEWS Nettex Hoof Builder

TopSpec Antilam

Nettex have launched Hoof Builder as part of their new V.I.P. range of products. V.I.P. Hoof Builder provides the building blocks for your horse to maintain healthy, strong hooves. The formula combines high levels of biotin with fundamental micronutrients necessary to support healthy, strong hooves and encourage hoof growth. Healthy hooves are of utmost importance when it comes to your horse’s well-being. Poor hoof quality can lead to cracked and crumbling hooves. Maintaining healthy hoof growth and hoof quality is essential to maintain soundness. Feed Hoof Builder to provide care for distressed hooves and support healthy hoof growth. Results will be visible within three months, although it can take up to nine months for a full new healthy hoof to grow.

TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide 5-way nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. AntiLam is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers. AntiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high-fibre, very lowcalorie carrier to make it palatable. The formula is very low in sugar and starch and cereal-grainfree, making it ‘Non-Heating.’ Long-term trials at Middle Park Laminitis Research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed AntiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a caloriecontrolled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support. www.topspec.com

Mollichaff HoofKind Complete

NAF In the Pink Senior

If a horse or pony is prone to laminitis, it should be fed a low sugar, low starch and high fibre diet. It is important not to starve horses and ponies prone to laminitis as this can cause further problems. Choose forage that has a lower sugar content than hay and, ideally, a complete feed suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis that contains a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement such as Mollichaff HoofKind Complete. www.horsehage.co.uk

NAF Five Star Laminaze Horses and ponies on restricted grass intake require additional support to remain fit and healthy. Laminaze is a unique blend of over 40 ingredients combining with key gut support, bio-available sulphur and targeted nutrients, in a palatable formula to maintain hoof health and improve their diet and lifestyle. Prebiotics and live probiotics are included for their ability to a stable, healthy gut environment. Naturally sourced antioxidants are present to support the liver. Bio-available sulphur (MSM) is recommended for supporting healthy hoof growth and strong sulphur bonds within the laminae. Laminaze contains all the key nutrients for optimal dietary support, especially around the time of year when spring and autumn flushes of grass occur. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Equine America Lamigard TRT Equine America Lamigard TRT is a highly effective supplement for horses and ponies and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. Lamigard TRT will ensure your horse’s feet stay healthy all year round and will complement a careful feeding regime. This product can be fed to the in-foal and lactating mare.

For all Old Age Performers, In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In the Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Specially chosen herbs support a youthful spark. In the Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Lifeforce Focus Lifeforce Focus, the supplement from Alltech is specially designed for leisure and companion horses and those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimise digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

Why Choose Premier Flex? Not all equine joint supplements are the same, in fact they differ enormously in the levels of the active ingredients contained in them. A top quality joint supplement should contain not only a good level of Glucosamine which is a relatively cheap ingredient but also high levels of Chondroitin, HA and MSM. Premier Flex is possibly the highest spec equine joint supplement today!

365 Complete is a superb high spec balancer that goes far beyond normal vitamin and mineral products. 365 Complete includes every vitamin and mineral a horse needs and these minerals unlike many products are provided in chelated form which makes them far more absorbable. 365 Complete also includes pre and pro-biotics (gut health), MSM (joints, skin, breathing etc) and biotin (feet). 365 Complete helps keep horses in peak condition, the spec on 365 Complete is unsurpassed and yet it is still much cheaper than well known balancers.

“I am not one usually to write about products, but as a HUGE sceptic before I tried it, I just had to drop you a line about 365 Complete. I cannot believe the difference in my 5yo in the short time I have been feeding him 365 Complete, his coat is gleaming, he's so relaxed and content and he is bristling with good health!!” Annie Holbeche
