ON BALANCE, THE BEST WAY TO KEEP YOUR HORSE HAPPY New from Nettex for 2013, Gut Balancer has been carefully formulated using the highest grade ingredients and is unique as it contains Diamond V, a concentrated yeast culture for optimum performance. Regardless of your horses’ workload, age, type, discipline, stress levels or nutritional status, Diamond V can complement and enhance feed digestibility, palatability, fibre digestion and overall health quickly and efficiently, helping to keep your horse healthy, happy and in peak condition from the inside out.

Fed on a regular basis it will help against the onset of digestive related problems, promote healthy skin and coat condition, maintain weight with effective vitamin, mineral and nutrient absorption and maintain a healthy hind gut function. Acid levels can increase during stressful situations especially during competition, travelling or the everyday anxieties that occur. It will also help to calm irritable horses and is ideal to be fed after periods of illness or medication to restore the overall balance of your horse’s health.

By feeding Gut Balancer, acid levels are dramatically reduced alleviating discomfort and minimising the risk of gastric related conditions that may result in weight loss, loose droppings and vices such as windsucking, crib biting, box walking and discomfort when girthed up.

Why wait until you have a problem, with economical feeding rates and rapid results Nettex Gut Balancer is value for money to help keep your horse in tip top health. Trust Nettex. Available in 750g, 1.5kg and 3kg. Prices start from £19.99.

Welcome 30 R

egular readers will know how much I love being out and about snapping the action at local shows. This month I managed a day at the South of England Spring Show and was delighted to meet and chat to the local riders, many of whom had just qualified for the Royal International Horse Show. A few days later I was lucky to be invited to Hartpury for the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships. Turn to page 44 to see which of the locals impressed the best. While away at Hartpury I was able to keep up with all the action back home, by the wonderful powers of social media. We love hearing what you are up to and if you don’t already follow us, sign up to Facebook and Twitter and keep us informed with all your news and results. We have had some new girls arrive at our yard this month and I have been impressed by tales of non-horsey mothers’ abilities at putting in studs and generally dealing with all that is involved in parenting an eventing-mad teenager. The mothers at my yard seem to have adapted quickly and efficiently, but it made me think for many it could be a daunting prospect, so with a little help from Nina Lloyd-Jones we have the Parent-proof guide to Eventing, turn to page 46 to read more. As we go to print the sun is shining, the fields are drying and the outdoor season is under way. Whatever you are doing with your horse over the coming weeks, have fun and keep us updated of any extraordinary news.

Is Your Horse trying to tell You Something? Weymarsh Dressage in Surrey is very pleased to announce they will be hosting a lecture demo with Jose Garcia MIVCA, MRCVS, who is an Equine Veterinary Chiropractor, and a qualified veterinary surgeon, farrier and acupuncturist. With Jose’s wealth of experience and deep understanding the demo on the 18th May at 2pm, will cover all aspects of performance related behaviour issues and the subtle signs that your horse may be trying to tell you something. Jose will be working with the Weymarsh horses to clearly explain how biomechanical issues and discomfort impact your horse’s way of going. The Weymarsh Dressage horses will be ridden by Sarah Ridd while Jose explains exactly what he can see, they will then be treated and then ridden again for the results to be seen. The demo aims to give you a better understanding of the biomechanics of your horse and how with every stride he may be trying to tell you something! For further information please contact Claire 0780 372 8646 or visit the Weymarsh Dressage facebook page.

Portly Ponies Love Likits The winter weather may have clung on for longer than expected but the problem of spring grass and obesity will still see many equines heading into summer on restricted rations. Ensuring such animals obtain sufficient nutrients is easy with the Paddock Likit; the long lasting formulation containing quality vitamins and minerals plus garlic, Biosprint live yeast and the Happy Hoof formula. Where any concentrate rations are fed, Likit’s Snak-a-Ball can be used to extend feeding times by delivering small amounts of food onto the floor, a process that also encourages natural foraging behaviour. Whether used for horses that bolt their feed or to reduce stable boredom, this robust feeding ball slows consumption rates - which is beneficial for digestion - and ensures those meagre rations aren’t gone in a flash. www.likit.co.uk

he 2013 series of qualifiers for the well established South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) Search For A Star and the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championships continues at a new venue, Onley Ground Equestrian Centre on the 19th May. This is the first season that the Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex, located in Rugby Warwickshire, will be holding a qualifier for these popular championships. Search For A Star has been created by SEIB to encourage amateur riders to produce their horses to a high standard in the show ring and giving them the opportunity to compete at the prestigious finals at the Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS). Other qualifiers will be held at Osbaldeston Equestrian Centre, Badgworth Riding Centre, Bury Farm Equestrian Centre, Vale View Equestrian. The Search For A Star competition rules, comprehensive information, a downloadable schedule and entry form are available from www.search4astar.org.uk, as well as the latest news, details of previous winners, what to wear and a great forum for riders to share their views.

Concern at number of Grooms working without Insurance The British Grooms Association (BGA) is concerned with the increasing number of uninsured grooms who are running into serious financial difficulties after being injured at work, and have teamed up with South Essex Insurance Brokers to address the issue. Whilst employed grooms are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), currently just £85.85 a week, self-employed grooms are not entitled to receive any SSP, leaving them with no income if they are unable to work. Over the last six months the BGA have dealt with a record number of uninsured self-employed grooms looking for advice as they are unable to pay their bills following an accident at work. Executive Director of the BGA Lucy Katan says, “This is a particularly worrying trend and in many cases has led to grooms having to sell their possessions in order to pay day-to-day bills. Working with horses is a high risk occupation and I cannot stress how important it is for grooms to take out their own personal accident insurance policies to help protect their income. Most grooms say ‘I didn’t think it would happen to me’, but the sad fact is it can and it does.” In order to address this issue the BGA have linked with specialist equestrian insurance brokers, South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) to offer a range of discounted groom specific personal accident policies. BGA member Caroline Baker says: “In November 2011 I had a nasty fall at work which left me needing two operations and crutches for five months. Fortunately I had taken out personal accident insurance through the BGA as the additional costs involved with having time off were high. I had to leave my job and now have an office job but at the time the insurance was an absolute life saver. The advice and support I received from everyone at the BGA was amazing and they helped me through a very difficult time.” SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina MacKenzie, says “We are particularly concerned about people who think they are insured but they are not. Some personal accident insurance cover is only applicable to leisure activities and does not cover student work placements or those who are self-employed working with horses. We would encourage more grooms to become members of the BGA and to take advantage of the insurance option to ensure that they are covered in the unfortunate event of an accident”. For more information visit www.britishgrooms.org.uk. Further information on SEIB can be found at www.seib.co.uk

Preparing for the eventing season We asked three WOW Saddles-sponsored riders for their top tips to help prepare for the 2013 horse trials season: The importance of road work by Francis Whittington

“Roadwork is as important now as it was when roads and tracks were part of the longer eventing format. There was a belief that fitness levels would change with the demise of long format, however roadwork is equally vital, and I do a huge amount of it throughout the season. Even over the short format, horses still need to be at the peak of their fitness, and as athletic as they would have been before. The key to utilising roadwork is to ‘walk fast and trot slow’. I am very fortunate that I have a lot of hills around my yard, so we trot the horses slowly up them. All of my team hack around three times a week on the roads; the older horses go for longer hacks as well as their canter work, and I believe it really helps to tone their legs. It is not necessary to trot for miles and miles, just steady trot work - this helps chill the horses out and unwind. Not only is hacking on the roads a useful preparatory tool prior to the start of the season, but it also helps keep the horses focused and fit throughout the year.”

Utilising local XC courses by Paul Tapner

“In a recent Localrider, there was a great guide to all of the South East’s top XC venues. Using a training venue ahead of competition is invaluable. No matter how good your facilities at home, the value of the cross country schooling venue cannot be underestimated, and is an ideal way to introduce new obstacles and test your accuracy skills over more solid fences, for example, approaching corner fences from different angles, or adjusting your strides between related distances. Why not ask if you can move some showjumping poles from the manege and position them at an angle at each side of the XC fences to guide the horse in? This will help to stop him looking for a way out and learning to run out. Eventually you can drop the poles on the floor then take them away completely when he is fully confident. If horse or rider are inexperienced it is wise to take an experienced pair with you to give a lead over fences; book a session at the venue regularly and plan your schooling sessions in advance, establishing a goal for the day.”

Why do top riders choose WOW? Key features of WOW Saddles: • The only longitudinally rigid, but laterally flexible tree – offers greater shoulder freedom • Large bearing surface • The widest range of interchangeable width fittings: XN-8X • Available with Flair®, Flocked or Foam panels Visit www.wowsaddles.com

The importance of ‘Stretching and connecting’ in your flatwork by Kitty King

“It is important as you prepare for this season’s dressage tests to ask the horse regularly for stretches in walk after some initial arenabased warm-up exercises, and on every hack. Allow the horse to stretch freely on a long rein and be aware of how the horse uses his shoulders and how relaxed and loose he is over his back. To establish ‘connection’ in walk, pick up the rein to work in medium length steps. If there is tension, jogging or loss of looseness in the neck and back muscles, immediately give the rein and take free walk again. Keep repeating this until the horse stops any tense, ‘backwards’ reactions when you pick up the rein. Don’t be tempted to fiddle with the rein to create roundness when connecting, and don’t worry if he isn’t round to start with. He will learn to go forward through a supple back as you nudge him with your leg to an elastic connection through the rein.” MAY 2013 Localrider 13

SPOTLIGHT

Rosie Bloor

Rosie and Knockanroe Champ at home

Rosie Bloor has a busy season planned. Having newly launched her own showing website, she also has a string of native ponies to compete this season, Alex Kelly went along to meet the Sussex rider.

W

hen Rosie Bloor, from the village of Whitesmiths in East Sussex, began showing ponies as a child she never thought that it would be the inspiration for her to start a business. At the age of 21 she has launched The Show Secretary, a searchable database that aims to provide information about Royal International Horse Show (RIHS), Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and Olympia qualifiers.

Injury strikes

Dream ride

The Show Secretary

Starting at grassroots level, Rosie, with the support of her mother, Jo, has been involved with showing ponies all of her life. Rosie recalls that she spent a lot of time being shaken off her pony, Scarlett. Determined to find more equine success, she found Mandy and Oliver Burchell-Small’s showing production yard and it wasn’t long before she achieved her dream of riding at HOYS.

When she left school, Rosie went to work for Oliver and Mandy, where as well as picking up lots of hints and tips on producing ponies for the show ring, she also came up with the idea for The Show Secretary. “I saw how a show team runs and the administration involved and that more and more entries needed to be completed online, but there was no central point of information.” Rosie said: “On The

Throughout her school years Rosie combined her showing commitments with hockey and was even part of the England under sixteen squad. However, a knee injury sustained while playing netball cut short her career and very nearly jeopardised her riding as well. Even now, her injuries mean she can’t compete or train as much as she would like.

Show Secretary subscribers can find all the information in one place to save time and never miss an entry closing date, as reminders are emailed out on a weekly basis”.

Champion Connemara As well as launching her own business she has a string of native ponies to show for the season. Having enjoyed success with the likes of Bejowans Super Star, Atherston Bonzobie and Erimus Sorcerer, finding the next champion was going to be tough. But she quite literally found a champ by name and by nature in the form of Knockanroe Champ. Now aged twelve, the Connemara gelding, known as Colin at home, has built a reputation as a consistent show ring performer. Among his many note worthy results, he has qualified for HOYS five times, finishing second twice, he has also won the Best of Breed title at Olympia and won at Royal Windsor.

A true family pony, Colin is proving to have a natural ability over fences and is currently stabled with event rider, Sam Penn, who is training both him and Rosie for the Working Hunter Pony (WHP) classes. Rosie hopes that 2013 will see him really progress in this class and looks

forward to also starting side saddle with him. Stable-mate, Mr. Magoo, will also compete in the WHP classes and she will continue to partner Thistledown Great Gatsby and Thistledown Jack Horner, both of which look to be exciting prospects for the coming year.

Summer

Horse Care Tips D

id you know that horses can become dehydrated or get sunburn in hot weather - just like you! If you live in an area that heats up in the summer, you should protect your horse from hot-weather hazards. Here Harriet provides advice on what you can do to keep your favourite horse or pony healthy and happy during the summer months.

Rehydrate

Make sure your horse has enough fresh, clean water every day. Having a constant source of water in the field is essential so that they can drink whenever they choose. A horse can drink more than 10 gallons of water a day and if they don’t get enough water they can become dehydrated and become sick. Check the water trough every day and fill it up if it’s low. If the field has an automatic water supply, don’t forget to check it once a day to make sure it’s working. Clean out the troughs if they fill with algae and turn green and the water becomes stagnant. EquestrianClearance.com stock a range of Warhorse Water Carriers, attractive, durable and practical. Made from tough, nontoxic, recyclable plastic, they are ideal for filling up your fields water supply. They are also see-through for checking water levels, stackable to save space and have comfortable handles and cap taps for easy pouring.

Sunshade

If you can provide some shade for your horse out in the field this will help protect them from the sun during the day. A field shelter is ideal or a shady area by some trees will help keep the sun off your horse’s back and escape the flies too. Keep some high factor sun cream handy in your grooming kit and use it on both you and your horse! Horses with white markings on their faces are most likely to get sunburn, so you may have to apply a sun cream daily. EquestrianClearance.com stock a variety of sun creams and soothers such as Gold Label Sun Guard and Barrier Sunburn Soother. If your horse gets burned, you’ll notice red patches and peeling skin. These will need to be treated quickly as the patches could turn into sores with the possibility of becoming infected. If your horse is prone to sunburn, you may need to put a fly mask on that offers UV protection or alternatively keep them in the stable when it is hot outside. You can buy a long mask that covers the nose too for extra protection. Available from EquestrianClearance.com are the Equilibrium Max Fly Mask, Midi Fly Mask and Muzzle Protector, which all provides UV protection, screening out up to 80% of harmful UV rays as well as biting insects.

In this issue we talk to EquestrianClearance.com sponsored event rider, Harriet Morris-Baumber to get her top tips on summer horse care as the warmer months approach.

Flies

They can be a real pain for your horse; biting, itching and just simply annoying them. Some horses suffer worse than others especially if they have a reaction to them biting the skin. The best thing to do is to turn your horse out wearing a fly rug. The lightweight mesh sheet keeps the flies away from the horse’s sensitive areas. They can also be really useful prevent the coat from fading in the bright sunlight. As with any fitted garments of horse wear, if you use a fly mask or fly rug on your horse, check the fastenings every day to make sure there is no pressure or rubbing which could cause injury. Keep fly masks clean as well, if it gets muddy you can use the hose. Before turning your horse out, give them a good spray all over with some fly repellent, especially around their belly and legs. You can spray some into your hand or on to a cloth to apply it to the face if they are fussy about the spray or try using a gel or roll-on.

Cleaning Up

Take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and give your horse’s grooming brushes a good cleaning. Use a bucket with warm water and some shampoo to wash your brushes in. Give them a good scrub against each other and then rinse them off and leave them in the sun to dry out. You horse may also enjoy a nice cooling bath in the warm weather. Hosing off your horse with just water at the end of the day or after exercising removes the sweat that attracts flies. Don’t use shampoo all the time as this will strip the horse’s coat of its natural oils.

Added Extras

Salt is an essential mineral that a horse loses when they sweat and when it is warm they may sweat a lot especially if they are in work. Keep a salt block in your horse’s field or stable so he can lick it when he likes. This will help replace the salt that is lost through sweating. Again if your horse is in medium to heavy work in the warm summer months, make sure he’s getting enough minerals and water by adding electrolytes to the water or feed every day. You can buy salt blocks and Electrolytes online from EquestrianClearance.com, with brands such as Gold Label, Naf, Likits and Wendal Herbs at great prices. The Bookham Girls

ookham girls made their team-chasing debut a winning one at Kingsclere Team Chase and Hunter Trial. rachel Dorrell, megan Williams and lauren Faggetter members of Bookham riding Club were joined by Sophie rothbarth, who answered the team’s Facebook plea for a substitute as original member, Kate morris, couldn’t make the new date, after poor weather conditions forced the organisers to rearrange. “Sophie came to our rescue,” said rachel, who continued, “the Bookham girls’ aim was to get round clear and jump the last together. Winning was a massive and unexpected bonus!” especially when you take into account that they had never ridden together and lauren was the only member to have competed in Team Chasing before.

Horse classes

Society Membership

The Horse section of the show occupies six rings. Horse classes start at 7.45 am in the Main Ring, with qualifiers for Ridden Hunters at the Royal International Show at Hickstead. Other classes with qualifiers include classes for Riding Horses, Cobs, Retrained Racehorses, Mountain and Moorland both ridden and in hand, Coloureds, Arabs, Foreign Breeds, Shires, Irish Draughts and a new class last year Cleveland Bays. There is also a class for Working Hunters ridden by local competitors this year. The show always brings a mix of top names as well as amateur competitors who love the atmosphere of such a large yet friendly show.

Cattle, pigs and sheep

Liz Major has wonderful memories of her father, Charlie Hickman, winning the Heavyweight Hunter and later standing Champion Hunter, with Shannon Thaw. A striking bay with a white blaze, he arrived by train from Ireland in 1947, after an exceptionally long journey delayed by snow. Liz’s mother suggested the name Shannon Thaw, as he arrived just as the snow was thawing. As well as excelling in the show ring, Charlie and Shannon Thaw hunted regularly with both the East Sussex and the Romney Marsh (before they amalgamated).

Farmers’ Market

The Heathfield Agricultural Show Farmers’ Market is all about promoting great local produce, where the use of traditional methods and skills create a wonderful end product. In order to maintain the true essence of the market, all goods and produce must have been grown, crafted, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the smallholder or farmer. None of the produce being sold, will have travelled more than 25 miles from where it was made or produced. If you are not tempted already, there will be lots more delicious foods and drinks available to try and buy around the showground.

Milk & More WI Marquee

The Womens’ Institute, more commonly known as the WI, have agreed to stage an exhibition this year. The Milk & More WI Marquee will be offering hands on knitting and crochet advice, demonstrations on vintage hair styles and will be displaying the results of their dressmaking, baking and photography competitions.

Weather woes By Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine

Wet bedding can be incredibly damaging to the hoof, not only causing saturation of the foot, but resulting in ammonia damaging the horn and weakening the outer layer of the horse’s hoof. Absorbent bedding and regular and efficient mucking out is essential if you are forced to use increased stabling, to prevent against conditions such as thrush. In addition, regular picking out, checking and cleaning the hooves is an important part of hoof maintenance, so the health and condition of the hooves can be monitored. (In addition, extended stabling is unnatural for the horse, so the animal’s behaviour could be detrimentally affected – getting a balance that positively affects all areas of health is key!)

With an onslaught of cold and wet weather this winter time, horse owners have had their work cut out. With multiple issues including Dietary issues A balanced diet is vital to the condition of respiratory, immune system the hooves, providing sufficient levels of and skin and hoof conditions protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins and minerals. The most important aspect Wet, muddy ground can needing more care and of our equine’s diet is forage, so it may be soften the hoof wall attention during bad weather advisable to have your hay analysed for deficiencies, so you can ensure you provide everything your horse to ensure problem prevention, where does needs for healthy feet in all conditions. the horse owner start with protecting their Has spring sprung? equine? W

e are all too familiar with the old proverb ‘no foot, no horse’ and it still couldn’t be truer today. Hoof health is indisputably important, as neglected hooves can lead to discomfort, pain, disfigurement and even lameness. So what are the key factors to watch out for during wet weather?

Water – the enemy

now; although will we get late spring showers in May? Only time will tell. Maintaining healthy equine feet in challenging conditions is always a challenge, and one that we are all facing – one top tip is that if your barefoot horse is experiencing tender frogs due to environmental conditions, consider using hoof boots for added comfort and protection - www.trelawneequine.co.uk has an advice section that you will find useful.

David Nicholls, respected farrier and member of The Farriery Practice, a Horsham-based partnership of six farriers, whose interests include barefoot trimming and remedial work, states that water is the enemy to equine feet. “Horses in Britain are routinely at risk of saturated hooves, due to our changeable, often wet, climate,” he says. To understand the damage to the hoof caused by saturation, David explains that it is useful to visualise the structure of the hoof horn, which is made up by keratin molecules held together with intermolecular bonds. When this structure becomes saturated, it swells and expands, stretching and weakening the hoof. “The equine feet are like sponges; they soak up all of the moisture from the environment they’re in,” says Nicholls.w

Barefoot solution?

In shod hooves, when the feet dry out and contract back to their regular size and shape, cracks in the hoof can appear. While I am not a hoofcare practitioner, as an owner of horses, I personally find that keeping your horse barefoot allows your horse to find natural grip in wet weather, and also avoids the issue of shod feet If your barefoot horse is experiencing that contract and expand, and tender frogs due to wet ground that has softened the frogs, consider using hoof potentially crack. boots for added comfort and protection.

Avoiding wet ground

Whether your horse is maintained shod or bare, wet weather and muddy, wet ground can soften the hoof wall, so if your fields are saturated, it may be advisable to reduce your equine’s time spent standing on wet, muddy ground by moving the horse to drier pasture, utilising different turn out such as a fenced arena, or increasing their stabled time. However, increased stable time requires careful management, and horse owners must ensure their horse is being provided with enough forage in their diet for digestion and to alleviate boredom, and that bedding is kept clean. may 2013 Localrider 25

RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE ...Alex Kelly’s leg is finally fixed (she broke it in a fall from another horse, just before Christmas) and she has started riding Figgie again. This month Alex looks at bitting the ex-racehorse and why it is important to find the right bit.

A

common difficulty when you first start training an ex-race horse can be finding a suitable bit. The expression ‘horses for courses’ springs to mind as it’s important to find a system that suits both the individual horse and rider. I’ve been lucky with Figgie, he settled happily with a French Link. I was also at an advantage, because he came out of training, already with a good acceptance of the bit. As always with ex-racehorses it’s a sweeping generalisation to say, racehorses don’t have a mouth, but this is true of the majority of horses fresh out of training. While in training most race horses are ridden in a loose ring snaffle and when you start work with an ex-racehorse it is important to ensure the horse is comfortable with the bit you are using. It is also wise to remember that there is no substitute for good basic training. A general survey carried out on the Localrider Facebook page asked owners of ex-racehorses to share their bitting experiences. A large number recommended the Neue Schule bit range, finding these to suit the thoroughbred mouth and also to be a great asset in training their ex-racehorse. These revolutionary bits are popular in many disciplines and used by riders at all level of competition. Neue Schule aim to ensure the

A popular choice for ex-race horses is the Neue Schule Team Up, which is ergonomically curved to encompass the tongue and align itself underneath the upper palate, giving very even gentle weight distribution. It promotes a softer, more consistent contact, encouraging the horse to soften through the jaw, relaxing into the contact, which is something that a former racehorse can struggle to achieve. Racing News Seeing the parade of past Grand National winners at Aintree was a heart-warming sight (almost as good as hearing that all forty runners and riders got home safely after this year’s race, which was won by 66-1 shot Auroras Encore). Leading them out was 27-year-old Rough Quest, who won the 1996 Grand National, ridden by Mick Fitzgerald. Maybe one day we will see local horse, the 2009 Grand National hero, Mon Mome, strutting his stuff in the Parade of Past Winners, as it was announced this week, that he is to be retired. The 13-year-old gelding, owned by Vida Bingham from Herons Ghyll in East Sussex, will remain with trainer Venetia Williams during his retirement. Mon Mome won six of his fifty-six races and finished third in the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Partnered by Liam Treadwell from Arundel in West Sussex, he was the first 100-1 shot to win the Grand National since Foinavon in 1967.

Bought in 2009 from Hampshire. Racing history: Was a national hunt horse and was trained until he was eight-years-old. Biggest success so far: Completing our first BE100 in May last year, a mega achievement as we had started out unable to jump 2’0” together! Goals for the future: To attain good scores for BE100 and have a go at Novice. Any advice for anyone wanting to retrain a racehorse? Do not be impatient and do not underestimate the time they may require to re-school into riding horses - it doesn’t happen overnight! Be open to new ideas and be proud of every small achievement.

Are Your Paddocks and Grassland Suffering? Now is the time to start thinking about your paddocks and fields to ensure your horses and ponies get the very best pasture. Here grass seed expert Peter Hunter offers advice to make the most of your grass land.

E

xplains Peter: “Early last spring, I was asked to write an article on how to rescue fields after one of the driest periods ever recorded. Publishing date was mid-April and we managed to stop publication, just in time as the heavens opened up. Work, which should have been carried out never got done, as there were never enough consecutive dry days to get on the land without making a mess and making matters worse. This year we have the problem of the wettest year recorded and in early spring the land is still saturated. The most popular time to re-seed or over-sow is April, August and September but with the strange weather patterns we have had in recent years, this is no longer the case. For instance the ideal time to sow last year would have been anytime in the wonderful March we had. So throw away the calendar and carry out your grassland work, when conditions allow. If there is such a thing as a normal year, grass seed will germinate between the months of March and September in lowland areas. Sowing in the summer months was taboo in case of drought, but now that weather forecasts are much more accurate and can advise when rain is on the way, the summer should not be ruled out. So let’s be optimistic and hope that this year the weather will allow us to have good paddocks. Wheel ruts and poaching are likely to be the first problems to sort out. However tempting, leave well alone till conditions improve or matters will only be made worse.”

Peter’s Ten Top Tips for grassland recovery:

1. Poached land can be rescued, but timing is very important. If the ground is too wet, using a tractor will make a real mess. If the ground has dried out too much, then hoofprints and ruts will not roll back, leaving you with an uneven rough field which is not suitable for riding on. 2. Start renovating work when the land is drying out and the temperature is warming up. 3. Harrow the field. This will tear out old feg and moss, and make a partial seedbed. Harrow as a matter of routine, particularly if the droppings are not being collected. 4. Oversow poached or damaged areas as weeds may invade these areas. Grass seed can be spread by hand, drill or fertiliser spreader.

5. After the seed has been sown, lightly harrow then roll. 6. Choose your grass seed carefully a good paddock mixture should be hard wearing and provide a thick and relatively short sward. If your field needs a complete reseed, March, April, August or September is a good time. 7. If the preparation is right then the maintenance and upkeep is relatively easy. Topping stops the grazing sward from getting leggy and encourages horses to graze the entire field, not just parts of it. 8. Pull out weeds when you see them and don’t leave them to spread their seeds. Droppings should be removed on a daily basis. 9. Feed in different parts of the field to avoid poaching and spread by hand a little seed in those areas each time. 10. Put in an extra gate. This will prevent poaching and allow one gateway time to recover. Hunter’s Newbury Paddock Mixture is designed specifically for horses and has been a firm favourite with horse and pony owners all over the country for many years. It provides long-lasting grazing, with an abundance of ‘bottom’ grass and herbs to provide minerals from deep in the soil and is regarded by many as the mixture by which all others are judged. Peter Hunter Seeds offers advice on all aspects of grassland management and supplies grass seeds for the equine and agricultural industry. Are you ready to event?

Get set for

eventing!

By Stephen Biddlecombe of www.worldwidetack.com After years of watching your equestrian idols competing at Badminton, Burghley and the like, you have decided you would like to give eventing a go. The first step is making sure you and your horse are sufficiently fit, healthy and have a suitable schooling and training regime but how do you get organised equipment wise, for the big event?

T

he equipment list for eventing can be a little daunting, leaving those new to the sport unsure of what to buy. How do we know what is a must-have and what equipment is horse specific, and individual to each horse and their behaviour and temperament?

Key products

All equine tack and rider attire is governed by British Eventing, when you compete at events run under the auspices of BE rules; strict rules are maintained regarding any tack which could be deemed relevant to safety or horse welfare. Full details can be viewed on the British Eventing website, www.britisheventing.com Leather work can be one of the most confusing avenues for the beginner event rider, so here we take a look at some items commonly used in the sport of eventing:

Product showcase top quality, padded studguard girth This professional, high quality girth from Stephens Leather has an outstanding finish with top quality leather and fittings. Equipped with a built in stud guard, the girth features a strong, triple layered elastic join at both ends which alleviates pressure, and protects you horse’s abdomen from stud related injuries.

Stephens Leather has produced a padded studgirth to give your horse maximum freedom of movement over fences.

The design is soft and padded, and is designed to give your horse maximum freedom of movement over fences. It boasts stainless steel fittings, plus a central ring for your martingale or training aid. This is suitable for use with all saddles. Studguard girth available in Black or Havana Brown. RRP £105.00 EXC VAT. 42”-56”. Lambswool studguard girth cover available for £33.50 EXC VAT. www.worldwidetack.com proudly launches this beautiful, English-made balance studguard girth and also offers a wide range of equipment for eventing, including a collection of leatherwork including martingales, breastplates and girths. Visit the website at: www.worldwidetack.com for inspiration.

Bridles: A standard Cavesson noseband is the most commonly seen noseband in eventing and is permitted in all disciplines - it is a must-have on any double bridle. Double bridles are only to be seen during the Dressage phase at Intermediate Novice level and above, but can be used at lower levels during, both the Show Jumping and the Cross Country phases of eventing competitions. Grackle and Dropped nosebands are allowed in all disciplines, but only when combined with a snaffle bit. Martingales: Martingales are used to help the rider control the head carriage of the horse. Running martingales, which allow more freedom and movement than other martingales, are permitted and are often seen during the show jumping and cross country phases of eventing contests. Other gadgets and martingales such as standing martingales and Market Harboroughs are strictly forbidden in all eventing phases. Right: Running martingales are allowed in the show jumping and cross country phases of eventing contests. However if your martingale has a standing attachment, pictured, this is not allowed. Breastplates: Breastplates are used in order to keep the saddle in place, and also provide a useful “grab strap”, should the rider be unseated or left behind over a fence. Breastplates often have a martingale attachment, but this can only be attached during the jumping phases. Stud Girths: Stud girths are permitted in all disciplines but only generally used during the jumping phases. They aim to protect the abdomen of the horse from the risk of catching themselves and causing injury when they are wearing studs. Many riders consider a stud girth an essential safety item, particularly when jumping at the higher levels. may 2013 Localrider 37

Spring Style Tips For The Dressage Arena FEATURE

If you’re looking to create the right impression in front of the dressage judges this spring, leading on-line retailer Dressage Deluxe is the place to shop. With an international customer base, Dressage Deluxe is your one stop shop for beautiful British and European style, so who better to glean some style tips from than Alison Nye-Warden, dressage rider, MD and Owner of Dressage Deluxe. In this feature, Alison gives her top tips on choosing the right outfit for your shape and gives readers an insight into what top riders and serious amateurs are snapping up this spring.

U

ltimately, dressage is about presenting an elegant image and whilst few of us possess the ‘perfect figure’ we can still cut a dash in the saddle, by following some simple rules…

Creating an illusion

If you find that you don’t possess a true waist like Jessica Rabbit, then create one by choosing the right jacket to give the illusion of curves. Choosing a competition jacket that flatters your figure is especially important if you are ‘thicker’ through your trunk. I would avoid jackets with coloured trims on hip pockets, if you want to detract attention away from your hips. Collar trims and coloured silk piping can add interest to a plain classic jacket without adding pounds to your figure. The Anky Classic Show Jacket is one classic style that really does give a flattering finish and it’s also styled in a fantastic self cleaning fabric, which also enables splashes, stains, dirt and water to simply run off and ensures that you look smart, however busy the season. Right: Anky Classic Show Jacket Choosing the right length of jacket is also vital, especially if you have short legs. The most flattering being a jacket that sits just below your bottom, such as the Pikeur Easy Care Skarlett Jacket. This jacket is also styled in an ‘easy-care’ fabric, so it’s very crease resistant and dries quickly too – perfect for busy competitors. If a jacket is too long, when you are sat on your horse it can make look like you are wearing a dress and it will also make your legs look even shorter! High waisted breeches can help lengthen legs, but avoid pleated front breeches which can also add pounds onto tums. Again, steer clear of side pockets on breeches, as these will also add extra inches to your hips. If you have a boyish figure than these styles of breeches add feminine curves. These days it is also becoming a little easier to find long leather boots to 38 Localrider MAY 2013

38-stle-dressage-lrmay13.indd 1

accommodate most standard calf lengths, but for those women with ‘generous’ calf proportions, coupled with a shorter length very often the only way to find the perfect fit is to invest in a made to measure pair of boots, which will last you a lifetime if you look after them well. Many companies now have wonderful illusion tricks that can also help lengthen or slim the rider’s leg, so shop around for boots –we stock Konig and Petrie Boots because they really do help transform legs into those worthy of a super model. Konig Favorit (above left) and Petrie Olympic (right)

Petite ladies

I am petite myself, so can sympathise with ladies here. Make sure that you don’t drown yourself in a big oversized jacket; this will just make you look positively huge! If your budget doesn’t stretch to made to measure jacket, then get alterations done to sleeves and jacket length, to give polished look for your appearance. High waisted breeches are also great at lengthening short bodies and making legs look longer. Our Dressage Deluxe Diva Show Jacket does the same trick with its clever cut away front and we also stock Cavallo Tailcoats, which are particularly good for smaller frames, who find that the tails are generally too long for their height. Dressage Deluxe Diva Show Jacket

Right: Pikeur Easy Care Skarlett Jacket

Pure elegance

By choosing a single-breasted jacket with a longer neckline, this not only adds length to your neck, thus giving an elegant first impression, but will also help ‘reduce’ a big bust size. Smart gilt buttons on a jacket will draw the eye down, but only if the jacket truly fits. If you need to go up another size to avoid gapping down the front of the jacket, then do, as there is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise gorgeous rider and horse combination ruined by an ill-fitting jacket. I would also say that you should invest in a good decent sports bra – whatever your discipline, as nothing looks worse than a rider bouncing all over the place in the saddle. Taking eyes away from problem areas to ones that you want people to look at is also another great trick, for example choosing a stylish stock with a stunning stock pin. We have fantastic collection of both and many of our stock pins are exclusive to us and we also hold a gorgeous collection of stocks, many of which are limited edition, using vintage fabrics, which give your outfit that ‘designer’ touch.

Cavallo Tailcoats

Change in hat rule

The British Dressage UK hat rule change has meant that a new trend has emerged on the scene for modern style safety helmets and the opportunity to add an even more individual touch to your competition outfit, with the option of crystal embellishment and even floral embossed detail. Personally I love this new direction, as I think that it instantly updates your competition outfit, as well as championing the safety aspect. These style helmets are hugely popular amongst our top international riders and they are rapidly becoming the must-have addition to your competition attire. Right: Samshield Crystal Hat

And finally remember, don’t be swayed by equestrian clothing trends- pick out the ones that suit your figure the best, remember first impressions really do count, especially when it comes to your competition wardrobe! For more information visit www.dressagedeluxe.co.uk or call 0800 321 3001

Meditek Silver Wound Dressing The Meditek Silver Wound Dressing from Fabtek Solutions combines a top quality wound dressing with antibacterial Zorflex, and is recommended by vets. The wound dressing adsorbs odour and absorbs wound exudate, as you’d expect from a high quality wound dressing, but the layer of Zorflex included adds something else. Zorflex is an activated carbon fabric with silver that draws bacteria towards it (using its permanent electrostatic charge) and holds them there, until they die, something accelerated by the silver the product contains. This combination helps to promote and maintain a healthy wound environment and enhances healing rates. Each dressing can be cut to size too. Meditek Silver dressings are available in two sizes, individually and as boxes of five, and prices start from £8.64. www.fabteksolutions.com

S

usi, a dressage and show jumping rider, competes at a very high level and has represented her country as a para-rider – her dream is to compete at the Paralympics, as she is paralysed from the waist down, a result of a devastating spinal injury acquired when she was in the Navy. We asked her to tell readers about her plans for this year.

Moving to a new yard – a fresh start

2013 has already been a tumultuous time for me, with many ups and downs! It started when I moved livery yards at the beginning of the year – I am afraid to say that I experienced horrendous bullying at my old yard, and I decided enough was enough, and that it was time to move my horse Seamus and his friend Bruno the Shetland pony to a more hospitable environment! My new yard Grove Farm, run by Belinda Shaw, with Mark Smith the resident trainer, is excellent and has great facilities catering for dressage, show jumping, arena cross country and team chasing. I tried proper cross country for the first time earlier this year, learning to jump trakeners, steps up and down into water, and big scary houses. The RS Tor rider safety aid comes in handy for jumping down banks and steps, as I have something to hang on whilst allowing with the horse’s head. Also with Seamus getting fitter, he is turning himself inside out during canter work, so it is good to have my ‘hand hold’! He bucked so high while we were doing XC schooling that I felt his tail come over my hat!

Weather worries

Susi’s powerchair has broken, leaving her without the mobility needed to care for and ride Seamus In addition, my power wheelchair has broken down, which has become a more pressing issue, as I need it to continue riding and caring for Seamus. It is this chair that gives me my lifeline, and allows me to look after, mount, ride and compete Seamus. I have even contemplated selling Seamus in order to raise money for a new chair, which would of course be an absolute last resort for me, and devastating. If any organisations are interested in offering financial or practical support to me to help fund a new wheelchair, or if there are any mobility companies that are able to donate powerchairs to deserving recipients such as myself, they should contact me at: newwheelchair@rocketmail.com. My friends have set up a Facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/groups/susis.new. wheelchair/ - which Localrider readers are invited to join! It would be great if I could raise some funds to help mend the chair, and get me back in the saddle!

Riders of Team Grove were due to take part in the 2013 Isle of Wight Grand National & Ashey Scurry in March, an annual event featuring amateur horse racing over a series of cross country, post and rail and natural hedges. They planned to raise money for breast cancer charities, and Bruno my Shetland was going to have been there at the parade to carry Yogi, a 5’0”bright pink toy bear, with a collection bucket; however, disappointingly the event was cancelled due to saturated ground. Just another example of our crazy winter weather, and its effects on the equestrian calendar. Hopefully by the time you read this, the ground may have dried out a little, and sunshine may be on its way – pretty please?!

A challenging time

Moving onto current times however and I have to report that life hasn’t been that easy lately – I have had to take a sabbatical from competitive Para Dressage, due to the increasing rising costs of everything. This was disappointing, as I had qualified for the British Dressage Para Equestrian Restricted Winter Championships in March, however with the high costs of diesel, it has become too expensive to travel the vast distances to the competitions. Feed news

Feeding the Competition Horse T

he competition horse is an athlete requiring a regular routine, good quality of life and a consistent training regime, alongside a balanced, healthy diet. Nutrition is an integral part of health and wellbeing and the quality of a feed is especially important when competing is part of your horse or pony’s routine. A good quality feed containing all the necessary nutrients to perform; whilst also ensuring the sensitive equine digestive system is supported in a natural way, is an essential aspect of care. The competing horse is often subject to a busy schedule involving frequent travelling and time away from home. This can reduce the amount of time our equines spend grazing, potentially resulting in problems such as gastric ulcers and colic if their fibre requirement is not met. Historically the horse would spend up to 16 hours per day roaming and grazing, trickle feeding a variety of forages. Modern horse keeping has seen the introduction of cereal based feeds to our equines’ diet, which does provide them with the energy to compete but doesn’t always answer their innate need for fibre consumption. Chestnut Horse Feeds provide a range of horse feeds ideal for the competing equine. Packed full of vital nutrients that provide optimum energy levels for the performance horse, without over exuberance, the high fibre, complete feed approach to feeding complements the digestive system. Chestnut Horse Feeds use a long chop formula that allows horses to trickle feed as nature intended allowing the digestive transit to be slowed. The high fibre formula of all products helps to neutralises stomach acid, therefore supporting gut health. The Chestnut Horse Feeds range offers a variety of feed types to suit all horses and ponies. Alpha Plus, Alpha Easy and Sport Horse Mix provide differing levels of calories and energy levels, suitable Alpha Plus for horses in light to hard work. All three products have one thing in common; a high fibre, complete approach to nutrition that minimises the amount of different feed types necessary by providing a comprehensive diet in one simple formulation. The competition horse needs high quality protein in the form of amino acids, for tissue repair, muscle function and performance. Alpha Alpha Easy Plus, Alpha Easy and Sports Horse Mix contain this, along with a vitamin and mineral package which ensures optimum levels of antioxidants and nutrients are provided to support the whole body. High oil content also provides slow release energy to help encourage stamina and a blooming appearance, without the chance of excitable or unpredictable behaviour. Sport Horse Mix Chestnut Horse Feeds can be delivered directly to your yard in the unique Bulk Bin System. This rodent-resistant, waterproof and lockable Bulk Bin helps keep your feed fresh, secure and tidy and comes on FREE loan for the life of your feed. Once emptied simply contact Chestnut Horse Feeds and your new, sanitised Bulk Bin will be delivered to you containing your next order. Chestnut Horse Feeds is also available in 20kg bags. Important points for feeding the performance horse from riding club to top level By Lizzie Drury MSc RNutr

Coping with travelling

Travelling and competing can mean that

eeding performance horses can be a challenge. Requirements for individual horses will vary according to factors such as body weight, condition score, discipline (e.g. endurance, eventing and dressage), environmental factors and rider ability etc. However, the common factor for all performance horses is that they will train and compete under a variety of stressful conditions that can adversely affect health and performance. For these reasons there are important feeding and management strategies that can be implemented, which are of critical importance to reduce many of these problems, whatever level a horse is competing at. Feeding management affects a number of different aspects of equine health and performance, including gastrointestinal function, hydration, electrolyte status, and substrate selection during exercise. The purpose of this article is to highlight some of the important strategies that could ensure that you have a successful season ahead in 2013.  Regularly monitor and record your horse’s body weight and body condition score. This enables you to accurately calculate your horse’s nutritional requirements for performance and can help you to achieve optimum competition body weight or ‘fighting weight’.

The importance of Fibre

Fibre (hay, haylage and pasture) should always form the basis

of any horse’s diet. It is often overlooked and a lack of fibre will increase the incidence of gastric ulcers, wood chewing, loose droppings, loss of weight and irritability. It is currently recommended that performance horses should receive a minimum of 1% of their body weight (BW) per day of forage to satisfy its requirements for long stem fibre and to minimize digestive upsets, although ideally forage intake should be in the region of 1.5-2% of BW and more if you are feeding haylage.

Forage Analysis

Many feed companies offer a forage analysis service for a small

fee and this enables a more accurate feeding programme to be devised based on the nutrient value of the forage. I also recommend that for a period of time that you weigh your forage and also any leftovers to establish what your horses actual fibre intake is. This can often help to answer any problems related to loss of body condition or loose droppings etc. Some disciplines require forage to be fed on almost a continuous basis e.g. endurance riding. Research shows that diets high in fibre resulted in increased water uptake. Furthermore, fibre in the hindgut traps water and electrolytes and helps to combat dehydration.

Feed salt on a daily basis

Salt is the only mineral that horses have an undisputable

appetite for. In addition to a correct electrolyte supplementation programme, a salt lick should be provided and at least 2-3 ounces of salt added to the feed per day.

horses go for prolonged periods without anything to eat. This leads to a build up in gastric acid and increases the incidence of gastric ulcers, which will reduce performance. Allow your horse to regularly graze or pick at a haynet to stimulate saliva production. Alfalfa is natural antacid, so frequent bites of chaff will help to neutralize excess stomach acid. Alternatively ask your nutritionist about the use of equine antacids such as Rite Trac.

Performance diets

There are now increasingly more performance diets available

to meet the nutritional requirements for horses performing in specific disciplines e.g. Saracen ENDURO 100 for endurance horses or event horses. For power based exercise such as showjumping and dressage, feeds will need to have more emphasis on providing energy from starch based ingredients, such as oats and barley etc. For stamina work such as endurance or cross-country, there will be a greater reliance on digestible fibre sources, such as soya hulls and sugar beet and oil, balanced with enough cereal and starch to ensure that muscle glycogen stores remain ‘topped’ up. Feeds are formulated to provide your horse with optimum nutrition when fed at the recommended quantity. Make sure that you weigh your feed to ensure correct intakes. If feeding levels require adjusting to help manage body condition, use a feed balancer e.g. Saracen BIO-LIFE BALANCER or Saracen ESSENTIAL BALANCER, which provide adequate levels of vitamins and minerals and important antioxidants such as vitamin E and Selenium.

When to Feed

One of the most frequently asked questions concerns the

timing of feeding the performance horse. Concentrate feeding alone should be avoided for at least three hours before heavy exercise to allow for increases in blood glucose and insulin to return to baseline levels. Feeding small amounts of forage or limited grazing time prior to exercise will moderate body weight and does not appear to have any other adverse effects to performance.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are a critical component of a performance horse’s

nutritional programme since they play an important role in maintaining osmotic pressure, fluid balance, and nerve and muscle activity. During exercise, sodium, potassium and chloride are lost in large quantities through sweating. Loss of these electrolytes causes fatigue and muscle weakness and decreases the thirst response to dehydration. It is vitally important that performance horses begin competition with optimal levels of fluids and electrolytes in their bodies and that these are replaced throughout prolonged exercise. Electrolytes are often misused and it is essential that horses have access to unsupplemented drinking water when administering electrolytes. If the horse refuses to drink, do not administer an electrolyte paste or supplement. It is well worth a phone call to your vet or nutritionist to assess and get advice on a correct electrolyte programme to ensure optimum performance and to reduce the problem or problems such as premature fatigue or Tying Up. Finally, whatever level it is that you are competing at, remember, water, forage, trickle feeding, weights, do not hesitate to ask for advice from your vet and nutritionist. Saracen offer a FREE, online diet consultation service – simply fill in the details for your horse’s type, age, weight and work level, and we will compile a carefully balanced ration and email it straight back to you – visit www.saracenhorsefeeds.com/feed-check

Feeding the

Competition Horse

Horses that are regularly out competing may benefit from specific feeds and supplements designed to ensure they are feeling at their best every day. All the companies mentioned have feed advice lines, so if you need to discuss your horse’s feeding requirements further, give them a call. Rowen Barbary Sumo Muscle Builder Muscle Builder contains a unique blend of milk powders, breakfast cereals, highly digestible protein sources, glucose, oils, vitamins, minerals and trace elements to help encourage overall muscle tone and development. By using good quality protein sources that provide essential amino acids, as well as additional Lysine and Methionine for optimal protein balance helps support the formation and repair of muscle tissue. This helps encourage overall muscle tone and development, helping improve topline. Oil is an extremely beneficial source of slow release energy, providing twice the amount of energy as carbohydrates from the more traditional cereals. In Muscle Builder coconut oil is added which is highly digestible helping enhance muscle glycogen storage, supporting gut health as well as being an excellent energy source for improved stamina. The inclusion of glucose powders also helps to improve stamina in the performance horse and will help aid reduced recovery times after strenuous work. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Blue Chip Original and Blue Chip Pro Blue Chip Original is the ideal feed balancer for horses competing up to novice level. When work becomes more demanding switch to Blue Chip Pro, which includes an elevated level of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Pro also includes a blood building formula which aids oxygen transportation to the working muscles. Blue Chip Pro also includes a prebiotic. All Blue Chip balancers contain a natural, fruit derived form of Vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant and essential for the competition horse, that is often under stress. Blue Chip formulates their products using the most up to date research available; that’s why top competition horses, from home and abroad, compete to their full ability with the help of Blue Chip, including Olympic event horse, Miners Frolic. www.bluechipfeed.com

TopSpec Performance Cubes TopSpec Performance Cubes provide energy for work but are ‘NonHeating’ and are ideal for horses that are a bit sharp or get fizzy on cereal-based competition mixes or cubes. They are formulated without the use of any cereal-grains, so they are not just ‘oat-free’ or ‘barley-free’ but completely cereal-grain free. At the same time they have a good calorific index of 12.5MJ/kg, and are low in starch and sugar, but high in fibre. TopSpec Performance Cubes are balanced for protein with high-oil soya and linseed, and with available sources of calcium, magnesium and salt added. However, they are designed to be added to a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement and therefore

contain no added vitamins or trace-elements, but do include the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. They are an excellent choice when relaxed and focused performance is required and are perfect for horses and ponies requiring a low-starch/highfibre diet. www.topspec.com

Blue Chip Joint RLF Blue Chip Joint RLF will help to ensure your horse’s joints are nourished and protected. Joint problems can often occur from excessive activity on hard ground; this can lead to the production of poor quality synovial (joint) fluid. The joint relies on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear ensuring the longevity of the limb. Blue Chip Joint RLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial fluid. Blue Chip Joint RLF not only contains Glucosamine, mSm, Hyaluronic acid, yucca and manganese, which all help to nourish the joint, but also contains a rosehip extract. Rosehip has been proven to be 40% more effective than glucosamine and this specific extract of rosehip has been shown in published scientific studies to be a powerful natural nutraceutical. Rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. all the ingredients in Joint RLF are 100% natural and contain no banned substances. www.bluechipfeed.com

Blue Chip Karma The 100% natural ingredients in Blue Chip Karma include the superior, water-soluble form of magnesium which can be quickly absorbed into the blood stream. When stressed, horses can use up their available stores of magnesium and so will potentially benefit from a readily available water-soluble source. Karma also contains other beneficial vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, which is vital to horses under stress from exercise, training and new environments. L-tryptophan is included as it is a pre-cursor for the hormone serotonin, the ‘feel-good’ hormone. Karma does not contain any banned or prohibited substances and is completely safe to use daily or as a single dose as required. www.bluechipfeed.com

Performance. It’s in our blood.

Blue Chip has always been known for making the best performing, highest quality products in their categories. It is part of our DNA, it is in our blood. For supplements to work the active ingredients have to be absorbed into the blood stream, which carries them around the body. With powdered supplements the powder has to dissolve within the digestive system before it is absorbed into the blood. Liquid supplements are already dissolved, so act faster than powders. The Blue Chip supplement range has been created as liquids to ensure that your horse gets the maximum benefit from the highest quality, most effective, active ingredients common to all Blue Chip products. The Blue Chip liquid supplements are the supplements that your horse deserves. The Blue Chip liquid range includes: Karma: A superior liquid calmer with magnesium, L-tryptophan, niacin and vitamin C Joint RLF: The only joint supplement to combine rosehip with glucosamine, HLA, MSM and more Garliq: Easy to use, fast-absorbing, organic, liquid garlic

It is our job as riders and owners to help reassure them that this is not always the case. Providing a horse with confidence is quite difficult and sometimes near enough impossible. Very often once a horse has become stressed, the only option is usually to remove them from the situation. This can prove frustrating and far from ideal as it can appear that our horse has simply lost confidence not only in the situation but also in us. Though the right management and training are paramount, nutritional support can help to produce a horse that is calm and attentive at all times. For the horse that suffers with a day to day battle with their confidence, a daily calmer would be recommended. This would apply to horses that are described as being ‘sharp’ or simply just display frequent anxiety. Daily calmers can help to support the rider and owner by offering support to help the horse help themselves. In turn when our horses require reassurance we will stand more chance of them listening to us.

The right blend of herbs can support concentration and confidence, so resulting in a horse who is actually more forward going and assured. To ensure your horse’s supplement is suitable to compete on, look for the BETA UFAS NOPS logo on the label.

Digestive supplements

As stress often goes straight to the gut, supporting with digestive supplements such as yeasts, pre and probiotics can also be useful for some horses particularly those who tend to stress weight off themselves. Some yeasts will provide natural B vitamins which work within the brain to regulate stress reactions. However, care should be taken when using ‘pure’, synthetic B vitamins, as the levels are crucial to each individual and if not administered exactly will actually make the problem worse. This is also true of the amino acid, tryptophan, where the result can be the exact opposite of the desired effect, if the right amount for that individual is not given.

When looking for a daily calmer be sure to look into magnesium.
