e have had enormous fun at Localrider HQ working on the April issue. Interviewing the riders heading to Badminton for the Grassroots Championships, we have been amazed by all their wonderful stories and can’t wait for the 1st May, when the dressage action begins. We also chatted to Harry Meade, to discover how his preparation is going and to find out if he had any tips for our Grassroots riders, turn to page 46 to find out more. I love escaping from the office with my camera and spent a fun day at Littleton Manor (LMEQ) with Lucy Thompson and Jon Pitts at one of their Combined Analysis Training clinics. This great new concept allows you to jump a course of show jumps and cross country fences as if in competition. After each round you are given feedback and helped with any problems, before jumping both rounds again, see page 17. When the sun briefly appeared at the beginning of March, I was asked if I knew of anything that might help with the problem of sweetitch. If your horse suffers, then we would always suggest that you discuss the situation with your vet, but if you want to find out more about the condition and some of the products that may help turn to page 64. Speaking to a horse nutritionist it would appear that another cause of concern this month is loss of condition. There are a combination of reasons for this, but primarily last year’s hay crop was cut very late, which affects its nutritional value and due to the constant rainfall the nutritional value in the grass over winter was generally lower than in other years, hence horses have been struggling to maintain condition. If you are looking to put some condition back on your horse turn to page 84 to find out more. Farewell to Law Choice International Three Day Event Rider Flora Harris has had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to her top horse, Law Choice. Aged 13, Bob as he was known at home, owned by Caroline Harris and Jane Keir, sustained a tendon injury during training that resulted in the agonising decision to have him put to sleep. “I am utterly devastated to have lost the horse who was my best friend, and he will always be remembered for his stunning jumping performances and his ‘never say die’ attitude. As my first top horse I had hoped that he would grow old with me, but sadly it wasn’t to be. I feel honoured and privileged to have known him and he will be remembered fondly for the opportunities and experiences he has given me in my career to date,” said Flora. Throughout his career he amassed over 200 BE points, and amongst many fantastic results he won the CIC** at Osberton and the 2010 Express Eventing competition. He also gave Flora her first experience at CCI**** during the 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, jumping clear cross-country.

ow many of us think about getting off our horses and how safe it is? If we own a horse, chances are we take risks every single time we do it – this is because we get used to making the same movements, and our muscle memory takes over. If you had to dismount from the offside, or from a different horse, you would probably do so a lot more carefully! There are many risk factors linked to dismounting – our spurs getting caught in the stirrup irons; horses spooking or walking off; losing our balance upon landing – and of course, there’s also the issue of physical fatigue after riding. Riders doing pleasure or long distance rides have been known to buckle at the knees involuntarily upon dismounting, simply because their legs have become wobbly, or their joints have ‘locked’. Uneven ground may also cause imbalance upon dismounting. The RS-tor rider safety aid is a product that attaches to the stirrup bars and is used when riding to help prevent falls – the rider holds the end of the strap like a riding crop, and the product helps absorb the movement caused by a spook, rear or cat-leap, helping to prevent a fall or an unseating. However, it is also ideal for dismounting. Sarah Millis, leading Grand Prix dressage rider and trainer, says it is ideal for any rider in terms of aiding a safe dismount. “When not in use, the RS-tor hangs at the horse’s shoulder. When getting off, I encourage my pupils to hold onto the handle with their left hand (assuming they’re getting off from the left) and dismounting normally, as it takes some weight as they dismount, and stops them from falling backwards – particularly useful on a very large horse, or a nervous one that is learning to stand still.”
A useful aid for mobility issues Horse owner Kathy Carter is seven months pregnant, and has been fortunate enough to continue riding her 16.2hh horse throughout her pregnancy. “However, getting off conventionally becomes virtually impossible once the bump gets too big, so I have been getting off using the ‘leg over the pommel’ technique. I used it most of the time with my last horse, who was 14.2hh, just through habit, so it comes quite naturally to me, however on a bigger horse, you have to consider your safety. I find that (when dismounting on the near side), if I put my right leg over the front of the pommel and twist around to the right to land facing the saddle, I land safely in the normal position. I wouldn’t dream of doing it without the RS-tor however – it has been tested vigorously to take the rider’s weight, and I can use it to lower myself down to the ground, instead of ‘dropping’,” Kathy explains. Whichever way you dismount – conventionally with the leg behind the saddle, or unconventionally with the leg over the pommel – you will find using the RS-tor useful, especially if you have any mobility issues, for example neurological conditions, degenerative joint conditions or anything that affects balance.

Dismounting safely When you take your feet out of the stirrups, make sure your spurs, if you are wearing them, will not get caught on the way down. Maintain fairly short reins even though you have halted, in case you need to pull the horse up if it steps forward. When you swing your right leg up and over the cantle of the saddle, lift it nice and high, and slightly push yourself away from the horse so you land clear of its legs. Bend your knees to absorb the shock of the landing – remember, the higher the horse, the more slowly you should dismount, and the closer you should stay to his body. Avoid keeping your left foot in the stirrup to lower yourself down, as this may pull on the horse’s back.

C
ombined analysis Training (C.a.T) is designed to be the next stage of combined training, providing eventers with a training experience, which gives a realistic stepping stone to the start of the season. With eventers spending much of the winter break focusing on dressage, CaT training utilised the cross country facilities, built by the Willis Bros at littleton Manor equestrian Centre, to closely replicate the two jumping elements of the sport. each rider had the opportunity to ride their horse twice over both the show jumping and cross country courses. Following the first round of each phase immediate feedback from lucy Thompson (SJ) and Jon Pitts (XC), was provided, before the riders jumped for the second time. Human Performance coach and coach to the australian event team, Jon Pitts said: “Combined analysis Training gives eventers a training experience, which provides a realistic stepping stone to the start of the season. it provides a training exercise with feedback, within a competitive environment.” Sarah lowe attended the day with her 12-year-old mare, amber. They have previously competed at Be100, but will be starting the season at Be90 level. Sarah said that in the first round of show jumping she had a stop, but lucy told her what to do to improve and they jumped clear in the second round. Sarah thought the concept was great, as so often with cross country clinics, there is a stop start approach. it was great to jump a course as if in a competitive environment, including starting from the start box. Sarah said that Jon made her think about her riding and what she was doing. He told her that she needed to slow it all down, sit up and set-up better, using her posture to give her control. Sarah commented that in her second round she felt much more in control and able to pop anything. Sarah’s mother, Sue Cartright commented positively saying: “We have been in this game a long time and you never stop learning.”

As a result this lovely little pony endured much pain and suffering and on arrival it was feared help had come too late for him. Hector however had other ideas. He was immediately examined by our equine vet and started on a course of pain relief and anti inflammatory medication. Of course we also gradually introduced him to Blue Chip Lamilight, which he loves! Less than two weeks later Hector was off medication and sound. Our vet was astonished by the difference in him and our farrier cannot believe how quickly Hector’s neglected hooves are improving. Artificial Insemination
The aim of this article is not to discuss in detail routines used for frozen and chilled semen, but to show that using AI is a simple option. If mare owners would like to know more about these routines, information is available on our website www.arundelhorsevets.co.uk. Artificial insemination by an experienced vet is a very successful and simple way of obtaining a foal. The mare stays at home or locally at a specialist AI centre and the owners are involved in what is happening. In my experience we have experienced higher conception rates with both chilled and frozen semen than with natural service. The starting point when planning a breeding programme for a mare is to choose the stallion. Looking in magazines where stallion owners advertise is a good way of starting to look at which stallions are available. The internet has also made selecting stallions much easier, there is so much information available on the net, many of the stud’s websites have video clips of the stallions and the breed societies will provide information with regards to their competition history. When purchasing semen from abroad I would advocate the use of an agent such as Elite Stallions to buy the semen on your behalf. To import semen into the UK, the semen must comply with certain health criteria for example the stallion from which the semen has been collected must be free of Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) at the time of collection. It is much easier to allow an agent to make sure all the paperwork certifying the health status of the stallion, the ‘health papers’, arrives properly with the semen. The agents will also sort out the shipping of the semen to the required location. Communication between vets, owners and semen agents is essential. Many of the problems encountered with the AI routines are due to mares being examined too late in the day to order semen and breakdowns in the lines of communication.
Chilled or frozen
Semen is either available in chilled or frozen form. There are advantages of both types. Chilled semen is ordered the day before the mare is due to ovulate. It is collected to order, chilled to about 5°C and shipped to arrive with the mare within 24 hours of collection. Chilled semen is shipped all over the UK and Europe easily. It is possible to get chilled semen from the USA, but is much more tricky. The disadvantage of chilled semen is that semen is only available on the days that the courier will reliably deliver i.e. Tuesday to Friday and possibly Saturday.
Assisted Breeding

The assisted breeding technique of artificial insemination allows the use of stallions from all over the world and embryo transfer allows mares to continue in competition and to produce foals without having a career break. Quite simple routines make breeding for novice mare owners less daunting. However, one of the main advantages of chilled semen is the timing of insemination needs to be less precise and the techniques used for insemination process are less skilled and I now use a deep intrauterine insemination technique to inseminate mares that have had small volumes of chilled semen delivered from the continent. Also some stallions have better fertility with chilled semen than with frozen semen. The success with frozen semen seems to be stallion dependent. Some stallions are more fertile after the semen has been frozen and thawed than others. However, with modern freezing techniques the majority of stallions now have very good fertility when frozen semen is used. The main advantage of using frozen semen is that it is ordered well in advance of when it is required. It is stored at the facility where the mare is to be inseminated and it is available seven days a week. The disadvantages of using frozen semen is the timing of insemination is much more crucial and the insemination techniques, usually deep intra uterine insemination are far more skilled. We aim to inseminate with frozen semen within 4 to 6 hours of ovulation, we use ovulation induction agents that relatively accurately stimulate ovulation approximately 36 to 48 hours after administration, however to get the timing correct still requires 3 or 4 examinations on the day of insemination.
Mare Management
One of the key aspects to getting mares in foal with chilled or frozen semen is the management of the mare after she has been inseminated. Many mares, particularly older mares, develop a post inseminating endometritis, or inflammatory response within the uterus. Identifying this by ultrasound scanning the uterus 6 to 24 hours after service and dealing with it with sterile saline lavages and intra-uterine antibiotics is essential.
Embryo Transfer
An exciting area of assisted breeding that is developing rapidly is embryo transfer (ET). This is where a donor mare, of value to the owner either for sport or for some other reason, produces a foal without having to carry the foal and have a break in her career. ET can also allow mares with fertility problems such as a damaged uterus or orthopaedic
problems such as a damaged pelvis, that cannot carry a foal, to produce a foal that is carried by a surrogate mother. One of the other advantages is that several foals can be produced from one high value mare in a season potentially by different stallions. The mare is inseminated or mated with a desired stallion following the usual process. The uterus is flushed at 7 or 8 days after ovulation, the recovered fluid is filtered and searched through under a microscope for an embryo. The embryo is loaded into a straw and transferred into a recipient (surrogate mare) that’s cycle has been closely synchronised with the donor mare’s cycle. In experienced hands ET can be very successful. The biggest problem is having a big enough group of recipient mares to accurately synchronise with the donor mare. The routine that we have developed in our practice is to flush the donor mare and ship the embryo within 4 hours to a stud in the midlands, where there is a large herd of recipient mares. The beauty of this routine is that the mare can stay at home and continue with its training and competition, she is just taken away to a facility where we can do the embryo flush for a couple of hours. Embryos can also be flushed from mares and frozen for transfer into a recipient at a much later date in the future. Embryos do get sold like this and they get sold in recipient mares.
The future of British horse breeding
For future improvement of British Sport Horse Breeding assisted breeding techniques are essential. There are many factors that go into producing a successful sport horse such as the training and rider selection, but the starting point has to be the combination of the genes from quality successful mares and stallions by breeding. Using AI, a stallion’s gene pool can be available while he remains in competition. The genes from top quality mares used only to become available when the mare is retired or has a career break. Many people are reluctant to give mares career breaks as they often do not come back into competition as successfully as they did before, this is where embryo transfer becomes so important. We need to promote the breeding from successful mares in competition by embryo transfer to produce the best horses for the highest levels of sport.

Mouth to mouth

ritish Eventing has an extensive list of allowed bits within horse trials, which can be obtained from the organisation – essentially, snaffle bridles, pelhams, ringed continentals and American gags, as well as bitless and double bridles, are all allowed across country, and within the show jumping element. Meanwhile, within the dressage element, the rules are more strict, with bits such as curbs being prohibited. In general however, plain snaffles with a straight bar or joint at the centre (or a smooth double jointed central pieces) are allowed; consult the BE rulebook for clarification.
A popular SJ bit
The Buster Roller Petros Loose Ring, from Bombers Equestrian Equipment Bits, has a rotating Petros mouthpiece with a 40mm roller – this increases pressure on the horse’s tongue, and helps prevents the horse taking hold of the bit - it is positioned at 45°, to follow the tongue contour. When the rein is used, the increased bar pressure helps lift the head - meanwhile, the loose ring provides a quick-release effect. Its sweet iron composition heightens the horse’s awareness of the bit and they oxidise easily, encouraging salivation. This bit retails for £65.79 EXC VAT.
An over-view of bitting The bit passes on requests from the rider to the horse regarding speed and direction. The mouthpiece of a bit is selected to suit a horse’s requirements – what fits their mouth conformation and what they are comfortable and happy in. The bit rings, or cheek pieces, help the rider communicate with the horse. Bits exert pressure on some or all of the following, internal parts of the horse’s mouth: the bars, palate, tongue, lips and corners. Bits also exert pressure on the poll and curb groove, which are external parts of the horse’s mouth. The action of a bit can be aided by the bridle design, for example extra pressure at the chin, cheeks or nose.
An ideal dressage bit
For horses with sensitive mouths, the Elliptical Loose Ring from Bombers is ideal - it features a 45 mm lozenge in the centre which has a small surface area, so a horse that uses its tongue as a means of pushing against the bit will ‘draw back’ to a better point of control. It is used by many riders of horses that headshake, if the headshaking is caused by a sensitive tongue; headshaking is a classic symptom of this condition, and is simply a way of avoiding pressure. (Because horses are flight animals, they do not yield to pressure or pain, but instead move away from it.) The Elliptical Loose Ring helps some stressy horses relax, and again the sweet iron aids salivation and mouth comfort. This bit retails for £46.05 EXC VAT.
A bit for XC riding
The Ringed Continental is ideal for cross country – Bombers makes a 2.5 ring bit that is available in all of the commonly seen mouthpieces (the ‘Eggbutt Happy Tongue’ is pictured), and in sweet iron. The 2.5 ring version is the ‘softest’ version of all the Ringed Continentals. It us often chosen by riders of horses that can be heavy in the hand; ringed Continentals are best described as a cross between a traditional gag and a Pelham. Susan Eggleton – Nachtigall
Louise Chamberlain - Mystic Clover 21-year-old, Louise Chamberlain, works as a Junior Graphic Designer at H2 Creative in Shrivenham. Louise said: “I keep my horses at my home in Lambourn, and I’m very lucky that during the winter months when I can’t ride during the week, my mother helps me a lot with the riding. However, now the days are getting longer, I can now get some riding in before and after work. We have had Clover for five years. I would describe her as a typical mare, as she’s very sensitive and we’ve had to progress her up the grades very slowly to make sure that she is confident and happy with what she is doing. We’ve had two wins in BE100s and she qualified for the Pony Club Championships in 2010. She has a lovely loving character and I would best describe her as a Labrador. We have been out jumping and had a promising start to the season. Louise said: “We are planning to compete at Howick and Ascott Under Wynchwood BE100s, with a little bit of BSJA and dressage training in between and our fingers crossed that nothing gets cancelled. After Badminton I hope to move her up to Novice and be competitive at this level, once happy at this level I would love to aim at having a crack at a one star.” Louise competed at Badminton in 2010 with her other mare, Amber. She said: “It was a fantastic experience and we were placed with a double clear.” Louise’s parents and sister will be cheering her on at Badminton.
Susan Eggleton will be riding her 21-yearold, mare, Nachtigall, at Badminton. She has owned the mare since 2010 and started eventing in 2011. The combination finished the 2011 season as top BE Foundation Points Horse & Rider in the country, collecting their award from William Fox-Pitt at the ERA Ball. Susan is a director of the Equine Travel Agency Ltd, an international horse transporter based in Dover. She plans to run Nachtigall at Goring, South of England, Hambleden and Chilham prior to Badminton, after which she will go back up to Intermediate Novice, where she ended at the end of 2012. They will be supported at Badminton by Team Nachtigall!

with
Harry Meade
Harry is one of Britain’s leading event riders. He is the only rider to have ever completed ten CCI**** events (the highest international level) by the age of 25, and even more remarkably always finished in the top 25. Harry has had top ten placings at both Badminton and Burghley, the world’s two leading events, and has been selected on to the Lottery-funded World Class Squad for the fourth consecutive year in 2013. He is widely respected in the equestrian world for his quiet and sympathetic style of riding. We caught up with Harry to find out how his preparation for Badminton is coming along and if he has any advice for riders competing at the Grassroots Championships. You are taking Wild Lone to Badminton, what is he like?
Your father, Richard Meade, was a great event rider (Richard won Badminton twice and three Olympic gold medals), does he give you advice? We work together very closely in preparation for the cross country at the big events, particularly when doing the technical course walk to determine the lines and distances that I’ll take at the more difficult combinations.
Is it true, your father used to hack to Badminton? One of the of the fields that we use for the horses’ fast work training is a twenty minute hack from my yard and another twenty minute hack on to Badminton from there. My father used to do his last gallop on the Tuesday and then ride on to Badminton for the event!
You always ride in your familiar white shirt, how do you keep it looking so white?
Does he favour a particular type of ground?
I’m not sure… I think it has something to do with a good wife!
He prefers good or firm going; he has quite small feet so sinks in when it’s soft and has to work harder.
Is it a lucky shirt?
I bought him as a raw four-year-old so have done everything with him. I think this makes a huge difference from a trust and confidence point of view, especially cross-country. It’s great to know that he has never had a scary moment and we have complete faith in each other.
What will your preparation for Badminton involve? Wild Lone’s Badminton preparation started straight after his post-Burghley holiday, and has involved months of dressage training and latterly increased show jumping training and competitions. We build up the fast work over about four months, increasing the intensity each week. He will usually have one cross country school before the season starts and then, as he’s an experienced and super cross country horse, he will just run in two or three events in the run up to Badminton, usually a couple of Open Intermediates and one Advanced.
How many times do you normally walk the course?

I have completed Badminton seven times so this will be my eighth ride there.
He’s quite a complex character and gets very anxious, but he’s as a genuine a horse as you could find.
You have ridden him since he was young, do you think this makes a difference?

How many times have you ridden at Badminton?
A lot! I will walk the course four times for myself, each time in a slightly different way. For example the first time it will be a quick walk to get the feeling of the course. The next time will be very technical etc. As an ambassador for HSBC I will also do two course walks for their guests on the dressage days.

It’s not a lucky shirt particularly, but it is nice to be able to ride in the same colours as my father rode in.
Do you have any lucky charms? I am definitely not superstitious and don’t have any lucky charms but I like to be well prepared with good kit that I know does the job.
Will you stay in your lorry at Badminton? Although we only live a mile from Badminton I always stay in the lorry when I’m competing there. It keeps me focused on the job in hand and there is always so much more to do than you would imagine - it’s a very busy week!
Do you have a favourite meal that you like to eat at events? I eat lots of pasta at events, it’s great for keeping energy levels up. Rosie (my wife) is great at stocking up the lorry and making sure I eat plenty.
We have several riders from the South competing in the Grassroots Final, do you have any tips for them? Hone your routines at your preparation events and then stick to what works best when you get to Badminton, don’t get carried away and change your plan without good reason. Otherwise, kick on and enjoy it

Indeed, research1 conducted by Elanco Companion Animal Health, distributor of Cavalesse®, has revealed that nearly a third (30%) of horse owners consider sweet itch to be a very serious condition with nearly a quarter (24%) believing that it causes serious distress to horses.

Moreover, over half (52%) of those questioned stated that they would be unlikely to buy a horse with sweet itch with 82% of owners of horses with sweet itch feeling concern, frustration and/or worry at the start of the sweet itch season with 2% even admitting that they panic. And while most horses are treated with a combination of products, including Cavalesse®, to manage the condition, over a quarter (27%) do not use stable or field management, such as stabling horses from dawn to dusk. “Sweet itch can be a very distressing condition for both horses and their owners and the constant irritation caused by the immune response to the midge bites can lead to severe welfare issues if left untreated,” comments Ed Whittle, technical consultant at Elanco Companion Animal Health. “While nearly three-quarters (74%) of horse owners feel that sweet itch is timeconsuming to manage, there is a lot that can be done to help manage and prevent the condition. This includes moving the horse away from standing water and boggy land, stabling from dawn and dusk and the use of fly repellents. The most effective fly protection for horses out at grass are light rugs and hoods which can cover all the areas of the horse susceptible to bites.”

Many horses and ponies come in to our care because their owners are unable to deal with this debilitating condition. We are keen to highlight that it can be in fact be very effectively managed and that, with appropriate care, many of those suffering can lead perfectly normal lives.
Important survey
The significance of sweet itch has been consistently reflected in the National
Equine Health Surveys (NEHS), with 15% of returns during 2010 to 2012 identifying skin conditions as a problem. The next NEHS survey will be held in May 2013. We hope all horse owners will recognise the importance of participating in NEHS to help build important statistics on endemic diseases such as sweet itch and in so doing, help improve the health and welfare of horses and ponies in the long term.” “Sweet Itch can be very uncomfortable and distressing for your horse and it can easily get on top of even the most responsible owner so it is no real surprise that over half of those surveyed would actually let it stop them from taking on a horse in the first place,” says Nicola Jarvis, head of veterinary services, Redwings Horse Sanctuary. “With preventative measures the condition is manageable. Stop the itch It is painful to watch a horse scratching away the hair on his mane, tail and other parts of his body, but when sweet itch strikes, most horses will find it unbearable and keep rubbing until they are raw. The important thing is too soothe and clean the area and then to try and keep your horse protected from the midges. Here we take a look at some of the products known to help.

Following trials in Hungary and Sweden, researchers have discovered that horse flies hate stripes, which is the reason behind Bucas’ latest fly rug design. Pallets containing vegetable oil were painted different patterns of black and white stripes or all black or all white. These pallets were then placed in a fly-infested field and results showed that there were far more flies in the black painted pallets, fewer in the white but the fewest flies of all were found in the pallets painted with very thin black and white stripes. At the end of 59 days, the black horse had caught 562 flies, the brown one 334, the white one 22 and the zebra patterned horse had just 8! Based on this research, Bucas has developed a first of its kind fly rug with thin zebra-like stripes, to keep horses free from the stresses of summer flies for good. Design The initial considerations are how much land can you allocate and how many stables you can fit on this area? The ideal yard would be built standing on well-draining soil and not facing into the prevailing wind. In terms of your day to day activity on the yard, you should think about this very carefully so it becomes a joy to work in – the trip to the muckheap and proximity to basic facilities such as water, feed and tack room as well as consideration of the access for deliveries, farriers and vets. Do you live in a modern house or a listed building, what design would be in keeping with the surroundings? Attention to detail can make a significant difference and help the yard blend with its environment. You could specify the pitch of a roof or the width of a door to match existing barns and even use special roof materials like pantiles or cedar shingles.
Construction Starting with a professionally prepared base of concrete and engineering brick, the stable itself should be constructed, by craftsmen, from high quality materials. Timbers should be pressure impregnated to protect against insect attack and the elements, whilst all metal work should be heavy-duty galvanised for durability. Doors and windows should be edged with metal to prevent chewing and all loose boxes should be lined, to eaves height, with kicking boards for the horses comfort and safety. A good stable should last for decades, with the minimum of maintenance, and cutting corners at the early stages will prove to be a false economy. ll horses need a healthy respiratory system to perform to their maximum ability so you might be shocked to know that 80% of horses stabled part of the time have some airway inflammation, even if they are asymptomatic; this undoubtedly has a detrimental effect on their performance. In addition, more than 1 in 6 horses suffer from respiratory disease such as Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO/COPD) which severely affects their health, and in later life limits their activity and requires frequent veterinary maintenance at a high cost. Soaking is the traditional way to deal with dusty fodder. Feeding poor quality hay poses other risks to health. Good quality hay is hard to find. After the wettest summer on record since 1910, finding good quality hay and haylage is proving to be extremely difficult. Most hay was made late last year and that means that the nutritional and hygienic quality of the fodder is lower than normal. The lower nutritional value, i.e. the energy, protein and mineral contents, can be remedied by balancing the diet with bagged fibre feeds such as dried alfalfa, sugar beet pulp and high fibre cubes. he smartphone App, “Laminitis”, was created to provide horse owners with a practical tool to help monitor weather conditions in a way that can be used to warn when grazing on grass poses an increased risk to horses prone to laminitis. As a Natural Hoofcare Barefoot Trimmer, I have seen firsthand the pain and suffering laminitis can cause and I believe that Steven Leigh prevention is the only way to tackle the condition. For these reasons I have given my time and knowledge, free of charge, to the developers to hopefully produce an easily downloadable, reasonably priced app, which can be used as an early warning tool for horse owners.
A weighty issue
Setting aside other triggers such as cushings, toxins or other ’unavoidables’, I passionately believe the most effective laminitis prevention is to ensure a horse comes out of winter at a healthy weight. Overweight horses are at a much greater risk of laminitis.
Condition scoring
If you are not sure if your horse is overweight, have a look at the condition scoring index on the BHS website, www.bhs.org.uk. Look at your horse with a fresh pair of eyes, or ask your vet to perform a condition score and if necessary advise a dietary plan. The British Equine Veterinary Association says: “There are many, many different causes of laminitis and it is a common misconception that laminitis is caused by over-eating grass only. Although many cases of laminitis result from the ingestion of lush pasture, the disease can be caused by an animal gorging on excess carbohydrate such as grain.
Certain weather conditions can significantly increase the sugar in grass – the Laminitis App can show horse owners in real-time when the risk of this could be high.

The focus of this project has been to utilise existing research and to create a computer model that can simulate the conditions that cause grass (C3 Cool Grass) to become stressed and as a result pose a higher grazing risk.

Good Grass It is not just the quantity of grass that is important in the development of laminitis; it is the type of grass and the sugars it contains. Nowadays, many horses and ponies are liveried on pasture, which was once used for cattle. This type of grazing may have been heavily fertilised and re-sown with particular species of grass which are not suitable for horses and ponies.
Poor Pasture Grass which is stressed by such things as an overnight frost or overgrazing will result in the formation of a type of sugar known as fructan. This sugar is the plant’s form of storing energy in the form of carbohydrate, and eating fructan can directly cause laminitis. The amount and the type of carbohydrate ingested are very important in the development of laminitis.”
How does the app work?
Local weather conditions are monitored and are used to predict the rise and fall of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC, i.e. sugars, starch or fructan) in grass. When this type of weather pattern happens, the risk gauge will rapidly increase to High and maintain this level until the NSC and grass stress levels are predicted to have lowered again.
About the service
At the heart of the Grazing Risk Monitoring Service is a computer system that gathers weather data from hundreds of weather stations sited around the country. For each location, historical weather data is analysed and processed to produce a risk index.
