he year may be drawing to a close, but putting this issue together it is clear that our readers have been as active as ever across all disciplines. Having watched Rosie Moore and Jennifer at the Eridge Pony Club Race Day (page 26) at Lingfield Park during half-term (picture on the cover), I was delighted to spot them again a few days later at Strictly Come Dressage at Oldencraig. It may have been dressage, but they still managed to wear their racing colours for one of their performances. Strictly Come Dressage (page 12) is a wonderful event, which helps raise funds for the Emile Faurie Foundation, which was established to help children in disadvantaged areas learn how to ride. There were some fabulous performances and it never fails to put me in the Christmas mood. Thinking of Christmas we have lots of festive gift ideas on page 57. I have to admit I would be happy if Santa dropped any of those gifts down my chimney this Christmas, although he may have to park my new Equi-Star Horsebox outside! And it wouldn’t be Christmas without our Bumper Giveaways on page 43. There are some amazing prizes this year and remember someone has to win, so if you haven’t entered before, why not tick the boxes and pop your entry form in the post before the closing date of 31st January 2015. This is a combined December/January issue, so I expect there will be lots of news to report when our next issue comes out in February. Plus we will be featuring Readers’ Veteran horses and ponies, so if you own a veteran send me an email fiona@lcoalrider.co.uk with a high resolution picture and a bit about your veteran and hopefully we can feature him/her in the next issue. Now I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a

NEWS Nominate Your Practice for a Petplan Veterinary Award
P
etplan, the UK’s largest pet insurance provider, launched the Veterinary Awards over 15 years ago to recognise the hard work and dedication of veterinary practices like Spring Paddocks equine and Avonvale equine vets. When Tracey Pettipher bought an unbroken Highland pony she sent him to a supposedly reputable trainer to be broken in. Five weeks later the three-year-old returned a neurotic and nervous runaway and after turning him away for the winter Tracey sent him to another trainer to be re-broken. It took several weeks but Sunny eventually lost his fear of being ridden and Tracey was due to take him home when she received a call to say that Sunny was showing signs of colic. Tracey immediately called her veterinary practice Spring Paddocks equine and, after the pony failed to respond to anti-colic drugs, vet Lizzie Samuel realised that only emergency surgery would save him. “The other option was to put him to sleep,” recalls Tracey. “my previous Highland pony had been put to sleep just a few months before and Lizzie knew I was still deeply traumatised. She was so supportive, but also explained the hard facts very clearly. Thanks to Petplan equine I was able to choose the surgery, something that would not have been possible if I had not been insured.” As Spring Paddocks equine does not perform emergency colic surgery on site Lizzie contacted the local Lizzy and Avonvale veterinary practice whose colic Sunny specialist melissa Packer was on call that night. Accepting the referral, mel invited Lizzie to oversee the operation, both vets working together for several hours to save Sunny. He was found to have a rare type of colic ‘epiploic foramen entrapment’ when the small intestine pushes through the chest cavity. Happily the operation was successful; Sunny made a miraculous recovery and returned home a week later. “After a long period of rest and regular visits from Lizzie to check on his progress Sunny was fit to ride again,” said Tracey. “I was extremely nervous given his past behavior. I follow Natural Horsemanship and it really works well with Sunny. He is now one the most relaxed horse on the yard and everybody’s cheeky favourite. I’m just so grateful that I have two local vets who put business rivalry aside for the good of the horse. I will be nominating Lizzie for a Petplan Veterinary Award, not only for what she did to save Sunny but also for giving me so much support throughout my previous pony’s illness. She even sent me a condolence card after she died, which meant so much knowing that she genuinely cares for all her patients. She truly is a fantastic and talented vet.” If your vet or a member of your veterinary practice has shown dedication above and beyond the call of duty why not nominate them for a 2015 Petplan Veterinary Awards. New Year’s Day Parade To get your horsey fix over the festive season, how about ‘All The Queens Horses’ at The London New Year’s Day Parade?
The Importance of Tying your Horse Safely By Roy French, Horse Trainer & Inventor of the Idolo Tether Tie Where did the idea for your tether tie come from? I am a horse trainer of many years and have trained many difficult horses around the world. I thought it time, after being presented with one of my biggest challenges, to invent something to assist me, as I often worked alone. I came up with the design of the Original Tether Tie. It was the ideal partner, a second pair of hands. The name “Idolo” comes from my Spanish Stallion. The New Lightweight Tether Tie is my easier to use version. Designed by me and made in the UK . What is it good for? The Tether Tie is capable, if used correctly, to train any horse or pony to tie up safely, old or young. It can teach patience and give confidence. It is excellent for horses that have learnt to escape from other tying devices such as baler twine and products that break open to release your horse. How does it work? This safety product works entirely on friction, designed to give your horse as much release as he needs, but not to make a habit of breaking away when he feels like it. The tether tie will release him in extreme circumstances. A horse will only pull back until he gets the required amount of release he is looking for, usually two or three strides then he will stop.
The Benefits of using the Idolo Tether Tie
The Tether Tie looks and feels much nicer than baler twine. It is waterproof, rustproof and comes in eight fabulous colours. It is easy to use, just loop your lead rope, thread under the friction bar and place over the shoulders, add the clip and secure to something solid i.e. a tie ring. No knots to tie. Can be used with the farrier, clipping, in the wash bay, in and outside of your horse box and any situation where you need to tie your horse. www.idolotethertie.com
EquiAmi Training Aids EquiAmi aids are different to any other aids in the equestrian marketplace and this is acknowledged by full UK & US patents. They are equally suitable for competition horses, leisure horses and those in rehabilitation or retraining for a new career. Receiving endorsements from competition riders is just as rewarding as the rehabilitation work done with horses recovering from injury and surgery which is proving to be hugely successful. The aids are self-centring, encouraging engagement, selfcarriage and wither lift whilst discouraging leaning and resistance. Horses develop power, lightness and swing with improved balance, paces, symmetry and a soft contact. EquiAmi aids are simple to use and do not require adjustment for rein changes hence suitable for experts and recreational riders alike. British designed and made, with proven results and user testimonials, an EquiAmi is the perfect Christmas gift for the busy rider. www.equiami.com
Amongst jugglers, cheerleaders, acrobats, clowns and marching bands, the parade also features three teams of riders and 75 horses. Invited for selection from all over the UK and travelling from as far afield as Belgium to appear in this annual event, the riders range from just six years old through to late seventies and are unpaid volunteers unified in their passion for horses and bringing equestrianism to the capital! The equestrian element of the parade starts off 11.45am at Piccadilly Circus, Lower Regents Street and follows the route up through Waterloo Place and Trafalgar Square Whitehall, Parliament Square- Horse Guards and finishing at Buckingham Palace. Each year the parade celebrates a theme, with previous year’s including Swinging Sixties, Hats Off To London and The Queen’s Diamond Jubliee. 2015 is ‘London Moving’ year and alongside creative costumes, there will be horses and carriages, sidesaddle costumes through the ages and the ‘Iberian Team’ in full traditional dress. The event is free to watch and alongside the horses, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained! www.allthequeenshorses.co.uk
Can you give Sasha a home? Sasha was found living rough in some stables. If you can give her that special home please phone Terri 07947 664 539.

The importance of Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances Accreditation (NOPS) has been raised to new highs following the global Pr surrounding the Queens horse being tested and found positive for morphine back in July this year. marriages Specialist Foods is the latest company to secure their NOPS accreditation. marriages are one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bird foods and animal feeds. marriage’s supply many horse food manufacturers and brands with Coarse mixes, Cleaned Dressed Ingredients, Linseed meal, micronised Flakes, and many other cooked and uncooked meals and feeds. marriages have been working toward NOPS accreditation at their Lincolnshire facility for the last six months, so where delighted to secure their accreditation at their first audit this September. The NOPS accreditation follows a risk assessment based approach and regularly auditing of suppliers and staff. It looks at sourcing, storage, transport and the manufacturing process to reduce the risk of racehorse feed including any of the prohibited substances banned by the british Horseracing Authority. The prohibited substances naturally occur in many raw materials, including caffeine, theobromine from coco and morphine from poppies. by having the NOPS accreditation it means that the supplier has a managed and control process to help prevent the risk of these substances getting in the supply chain. NOPS accredited also gives manufactures the opportunity to display the NOPs logo on their product, communicating with customers that it has the accreditation. www.marriagefeeds.co.uk

feature Last year The British Horse Society created a support service to help horse owners when it comes to making the hardest decision for their beloved equine companion, that of whether or not to euthanise. So if you are in that sad position, and feel you need their help, please call upon Friends at the End
Friends at the End W
hether you’re a serious competition rider or a happy hacker, a paid groom or you simply own them as companion animals, horses give us a bond, a friendship and a level of trust to which no other animal compares. There are so many reasons why you love your horse, pony or donkey; and these are the same reasons you may find it so hard to even consider saying goodbye. Emotions can often cloud an owner’s judgement. Putting your feelings first to have them around may not be the kindest thing to do. As much as you, their carer, would like nature to take its course and for them to pass away peacefully in their sleep, very often this is not the reality. This means that for their welfare we must manage their end of life care – difficult as this may be for us.
Friendly Service In 2013, the British Horse Society created a friendly service for owners to talk to someone who loves horses just as much as you do – but who will not judge. Here they explain how the service works. “We can also put you in touch with a
trained BHS volunteer who will know more about the services local to you, and who can even be there on the day when it’s time to say goodbye; the extra support you might need – a Friend at the End. We have helped and supported more than 100 horse owners. Horse owners like Lauren who used the service when her older pony became ill. “He was 41, fit and lively for his age, but a couple of weeks earlier his field companion was put to sleep. This didn’t seem to affect him at first but then he suffered from mild colic symptoms. Although the vet reassured us and said he should recover, after a few days of repeated emergency call outs something just wasn’t right; I know you shouldn’t give animals emotions, but he looked heartbroken. Talking to a BHS friend was extremely helpful. They were professional and answered all the questions I had in an objective manner. I felt quite isolated at this time, as none of my close friends were ‘horsey’, but they gave me the support I needed to reassure me I had made the right decision and helped my pony pass away peacefully and with dignity, something I obviously had always wanted.”
Talk it through objectively With any important decision it’s helpful to carefully consider all options available to you and your horse. We can simply provide the opportunity for you to talk it through, with objectivity and a non-judgemental approach being our priority. We recognise this may be a difficult phone call to make, but be assured we will take it step by step, allowing you time to talk and answer any questions you may have. Your call will be received with understanding, empathy and confidentiality. We appreciate it’s a huge step to simply pick up the phone and make the decision to talk about this topic. It might be helpful for you to write some questions down before you call, or make yourself a cup of tea to help you relax. Lisa Randle, one of our BHS Friends, says: “People love their horses dearly and it’s very hard to know the right thing to do with those emotions. It’s helpful to speak to someone who is emotionally detached who can talk you through that decision. Keeping a horse alive isn’t always right and owners sometimes need help in knowing when to say goodbye.”
Make an informed decision Just remember, we’re here to help, not judge. By calling you’re not committing to anything, you’re gathering information to make an informed decision that most importantly prioritises the welfare of your horse. No horse should suffer because the owner wants to prolong the horse’s life for their gain. It is in the best interests of the horse’s welfare that euthanasia be considered at the appropriate time and give a dignified and timely end, rather than allow it to suffer or be passed from home to home, facing an uncertain future. We will be there for you – for your horse.” HOW TO ASSESS QUALITY OF LIFE • Is the horse able to move freely when turned out? • Does the horse have equine companionship without being bullied? • Is the horse able to lie down and get back up again easily? • Is the horse able to eat and chew comfortably? • Is the horse suffering from any chronic conditions that are affecting his wellbeing? • Does the horse seem in good health? Things to look out for are: lethargy, dull eyes and coat, changes in behaviour Other things to consider: • Is the horse now dangerous to handle or ride? • Have your time or financial circumstances changed? To be put in touch with a Friend, call 02476 840517. For more information or to join The British Horse Society visit bhs.org.uk

Five tips
1
One of the trickiest aspects of winter management is balancing your horse’s diet. Everyone has their own ideas about what works for their horse, and many people will want to pass on their wisdom to you, perhaps recommending particular proprietary brands, or advising you to ‘feed up’ your horse. However, don’t forget that each horse is individual, with their own constitution, and each horse responds to nutritional elements, such as sugar and starch levels, differently. Maintaining low levels of sugar and starch are key elements of hoof care for many horses, especially those maintained with a barefoot regime, so carefully check the levels of the feeds that you are giving. Ad lib hay is advisable, while fast-soaking unmolassed, flaked sugar beet products (that generally have a low sugar content!) are good for adding condition to a horse in the winter.

Ad lib hay is advisable in winter
2
Winter often means enforced or increased stabling, depending on whether the horses are kept at home or at livery. And a lack of movement, combined with damp conditions, does not aid healthy hooves. Of course, however clean the stable environment is, bacteria still find it easy to proliferate, and can cause a number of unwanted problems. Keep on top of dreaded thrush by regularly picking out and brushing the underside of the horse’s feet, and select a bedding that does not become too damp. I like to use a product called “NT-Dry Heel and Frog Maintenance” - a powder that prevents and clears thrush in the frogs, central sulcus and heels of horses and ponies. It is available at www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk at £12.49 for 70 grams.
3
As a barefoot hoofcare advocate, I know that owners who exercise their horses more in winter, as opposed to less, are beneficially maintaining hoof circulation – even if it is walking in hand up and down your drive, or in the arena, every little helps. A horse that is standing aimlessly around, close to a muddy gateway is not moving very much – so put piles of hay down across the field (rather than within 10 feet of the gate for your convenience), to encourage walking, as well as foraging behaviour.
Try to reduce the time your horse stands in mud, to help reduce issues like mud fever

5
If your barefoot horse does struggle with some surfaces when you are riding, and becomes more careful, do consider using hoof boots – they offer protection and shock absorption, especially when comfort pads are used inside. Today’s hoof boots are easy to fit, and are also easy to care for – they can be rinsed off after use and the fastenings do not easily come undone in wet conditions. Visit www.hoofboots.co.uk for info. See page 46 of this issue to win a pair of Transition hoofboots.
4
Try to reduce the time your horse stands in mud, for example by providing hard standing areas, alternating the gates you use for coming in and out of the field, or rotating fields where possible. Not only will you give the hooves a chance to dry out, you will also help reduce issues like mud fever. This bacterial skin condition usually affects the horse’s heel, pastern and fetlock area, and is more frequent in the wetter months. It is easily spotted due to the scabby areas that form, although the skin may also swell slightly or weep, if very sore. You may find it useful to clip or trim excess feathers on a horse that lives out, as this will make it easier to ensure the area stays clean. When you ride, clean and dry the limbs thoroughly after schooling or hacking, to make sure there is no sand or debris stuck to the hair, and make sure your brushing or schooling boots are cleaned after use. I like Keratex mud fever powder - a very highly effective waterproofing and disinfecting powder that helps stop the skin from softening, so that mud particles and bacteria are less able to enter the skin pores and hair follicles. It is available at www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk for £11.79 for 450 grams. DECEMBER 2014 / JANUARY 2015 Localrider 15

Seeking the right advice I
t can be tricky deciding which products to buy when there are so many on the market. Often, riders will ask on equestrian forums or seek advice from their horsey friends, and this can be a great, unbiased way of getting the best information. “We like our products to speak for themselves,” says Theresa Morris from Treehouse Sporting Colours. “If people come to visit the stand at shows, we will happily talk them through our products and how they work, but we don’t like to be pushy. After all, we want them to buy the products because they like them, rather than because we have talked them into a decision. “It’s the same with the top riders who endorse our products. We only want them to use them if they are fans, otherwise it wouldn’t be morally correct.” Event rider Gemma Tattersall is a big fan of the Blazewear Heated Clothing, which is distributed by Treehouse. “During the winter months, I find the heated waistcoat is a lifesaver for teaching,” says Gemma. “When you’re standing around for hours upon end, you can become really chilly, but the waistcoat is comfortable and you can adjust the heat to your liking.” The waistcoat will provide heat for up to four hours and is fully rechargeable. Other products in the range include a back warmer, inner gloves, scarf and insoles.

Having recently been approved by British Showjumping, Helite Air Jackets, which are distributed by Treehouse Sporting Colours, are becoming a popular choice with top names in the sport, such as Louise and Joe Whitaker. The jackets are available in Blouson and Gilet styles, allowing riders to swap garments, according to the weather. Due to the Tekseries soft shell outer, the jackets allow for outward inflation, which means riders can opt for a snug and flattering fit. “I feel great in my Helite Air Jacket,” says Louise Whitaker. “It’s a really stylish garment and as the air bags have the quickest inflation speed on the market, it makes me feel safer, too.” Did you know the Helite Air Shell Gilet is now also permitted in British Dressage competition? Sports Operations Manager for British Dressage, Paul Graham, stated: “The Gilet worn over the top of a show jacket or tail coat is acceptable and permitted under BD rules.” “It’s great to see riders taking safety more seriously,” adds Theresa. “After all, even the calmest of horses can have an off day.”

e all know that sensitive riding is key to achieving harmony with our horses, but sometimes a specific combination of horse and rider needs a little extra help when it comes to achieving ‘brakes’ when hunting or cross country schooling. Please note, the bits and nosebands detailed below are described separately and are not necessarily used in combination with each other - we are simply detailing some of the products available to riders. A ‘stronger’ bit works best with a kinder noseband such as a plain cavesson, and vice versa, and the advice of an experienced instructor should always be sought.
Nosebands with an ‘action’
Always make sure your noseband is right for the horse in question, and be sure to fit it carefully – it is better to have it too loose than too tight, generally, as in the latter case, it may rub or even disrupt the horse’s breathing.
Flash This was originally invented so a standing martingale could be attached to the cavesson part of the noseband. The flash noseband allows flexibility, as the separate flash strap The flash can be removed for less noseband demanding ridden work. prevents a horse The flash helps prevent a opening his horse opening his mouth too mouth too wide wide, and it also helps keep a jointed loose ring snaffle central in the horse’s mouth. The flash strap fastens below the bit, and needs to be fitted tightly enough to prevent the horse opening or crossing his mouth; it should have one finger’s width between the strap and the horse’s nose.
Grackle This is effective at preventing the horse from crossing his jaw. The grackle fastens higher on the head than a drop or flash noseband, and should have one finger’s width between the strap and the horse’s face. The leather circle where the sections ‘meet’ should be on the centre front of the nose, with the top straps just below the facial bones, to avoid rubbing. Allow at least a finger’s width between top and bottom straps and the horse’s jaw.

which spread the pressure over many points, discouraging the horse from leaning on it. It also promotes mouthing and salivation, and is usually worn ¼” - ½” longer than your traditional mouthpiece, in order to curl around the horse’s lips and maximise the effect. There are many cheekpieces available - for example, the Bombers Bit Waterford Pelham introduces poll pressure, as well as creating leverage on the mouthpiece, and has an RRP of £106.33 (exc VAT).
Buster Roller A mild bit that is still good for achieving ‘brakes’ is the Buster Roller from Bombers Bits - the link in the middle has a width of 40mm, maximising bar and tongue pressure, making the bit sharper than many conventional link bits. The increased pressure on the bars will lift the horse’s head, and the roller will increase pressure on the tongue, encouraging the horse to tuck the chin in. It is best suited for a horse with a low head carriage that leans on the bit, and again comes in a variety of cheekpieces. The ‘kindest’ of all the cheekpieces in the Bombers range would be the loose ring, priced The Buster Roller Loose Ring, pictured, maximises bar and £51.33 (exc tongue pressure, and encourages the horse to tuck the chin in VAT]. These products are all available at www.worldwidetack.com
Bits that can aid control
A horse that may be described as needing extra ‘brakes’ is usually objecting to continuous pressure by exhibiting one or more of the following traits: pulling its head down, pulling the reins out of the rider’s hands, tucking its head against its chest and getting behind the bit, or pulling against the rider’s contact. A stronger bit works best with a kinder noseband – this horse wears a plain cavesson with a loose ring snaffle

Winners Explain Why They Need Muscle Power!
Nicole Pavitt on her way to the Newcomers title at HOYS believes Equitop Myoplast helps her horses perform
By Hannah Dyball
When a horse is worked, its muscle protein is turned over at a faster rate and the need for amino acids is greater. Muscle tissue experiences low-level stress damage during exercise and training, which the body works to repair. For horses in competition and training or those resuming exercise after a period of rest, amino acids are more critical than ever, helping to support muscle condition and growth, as well as the tissue turnover process.
Trevor Breen celebrates winning The Hickstead Derby
I
f there is one thing all horse owners desire it is to improve and maintain their horse’s condition, whatever its discipline, workload and state of fitness. A balanced diet combining adequate forage will maintain your horse to a good degree but there will be times in every horse’s life and career when condition is lost and muscle needs rebuilding. The market offers a wide range of supplements specifically for this purpose but choosing the right one is important. Two of the world’s top riders explain what they use and why. International show jumper and Hickstead Derby winner Trevor Breen commented: “We have been using Equitop Myoplast for the last few years on all our horses from 4 year olds to 5* Grand Prix horses. It allows the horse to put on more muscle in a shorter space of time. The results have spoken for themselves when you look at the horses in our yard. Thanks Equitop Myoplast for a super product that actually does the job.” Supporting the muscle growth and repair process is vital in performance horses, whether they race, show, event or jump, horses that are returning to work following a period of rest or convalescence, and older horses that are struggling to maintain condition. To achieve this, your horse relies on “essential amino acids,” which are needed to support protein production in the body.
How is muscle developed? Muscle is protein, made up of chains of amino acids. It is useful to think of these as the building blocks or raw ingredients needed for muscle renewal, repair and healing. Horses can produce some amino acids themselves, but need to derive these essential ones from their diet. Without them, the muscle turnover process isn’t supported and condition cannot be improved.
Another winning show jumper who believes in the benefits of this product is Nicole Pavitt who won this year’s Newcomers at HOYS. She says: “Equitop Myoplast is amazing for overall condition and enhances muscle development and maintenance.”
Veterinary recommendation Equitop Myoplast also has veterinary recommendation. Vet John Cousins, BVsc MRCVS, from online equine retailer VioVet.co.uk explains: “These essential amino acids help to build lean muscle mass in horses with diminished top line and condition, without causing weight gain through the unnecessary inclusion of oils or fats. It can be a huge aid to recovery from injury and also benefit performance and appearance.” Ultimately the proof will come from customer opinion and it certainly seems to live up to the marketing. 93% of users would recommend the product and it receives 5 star reviews from customers at VioVet. Recommended by a number of top performance riders, Equitop Myoplast provides readily available, easily digestible ingredients that form an essential part of the horse’s diet. Regular use of the supplement has been shown to facilitate healthy muscle growth, in turn improving Win a lesson with strength, speed, stamina, and overall champion showjumper, condition. Laura Powell writes...
It has been a quiet month competition wise, with just a couple of outings, most recently I went to the monthly British Dressage Show at Eaglesfield. It’s midweek, on a Tuesday and I am pleased to say it was the busiest I’ve seen it. It’s very handy for me in the winter being 15 minutes down the road and gives me the ideal opportunity to practise riding within the white boards through the winter and on the plus side, we’re sheltered from the elements with it being indoors. I only had two entered for the Prelim, Nessa and a new ride Jagermeister A. The latter is a big warmblood, who was in to sell and an absolute pleasure to do and ride having been produced by Tom Dymond for much of his life. This was proved when he scored an impressive 75.5% for second place (by a whisker!). Nessa meanwhile didn’t disappoint with fourth place also breaking the 70% barrier. She’s finally starting to manage her engine. Talking of Nessa I appear to have hit the teenage stage and she is beginning to mature into the athlete I hoped she would be. She is now a professional traveller and was very happy to stand alone, silently on the lorry while I taught a group of Pony Club members cross-country at Lodge Farm. She then popped round the course, bold as a lion and straight as a die and it was only her second time cross country. Producing a homebred from day one to competition level is never straightforward. When Nessa was eight-weeks-old she jumped (slid) over a five bar gate and last year she had an operation for colic. I have factored all this into her work and was keen for the ‘Back Man’, Roy Coles to look at her. I expected her to be disconnected, which was an understatement. However, after her treatment and with her engine fully running, I now have a replica of Daisy (her dam). And Nessa can now leap, buck, rear
Laura working her homebred Nessa at home and twist! Especially if she happens to have a pole down and it’s not her fault. I’m about to dig out my handle! Other news is that Spud has settled in to his new career as a hunt horse like a duck to water. He is proving to be a good asset to the hunt and is about to start earning his keep as a hiring. He was always on a diet when I was eventing him to keep him super lean, but now he can eat as many calories as he wants as he’s working them off with the amount of hunting he’s doing and he completely loves it.

adeline Heath from Oxted in Surrey rode her horse, Romain Rouge to victory in the Riding Club Show Horse Final in the South Essex Insurance Brokers’ (SEIB) Search For A Star Championship at the prestigious Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS) at the Birmingham NEC. Now in its seventeenth year, Search for a Star was the brainchild of South Essex Insurance Brokers who still run and support it today. It is exclusively for amateur riders and owners and designed to give these enthusiastic people a chance to compete at the Horse of the Year Show and also to discover new equine talent. SEIB has been providing equestrian insurance for over five decades and is a major player in equestrian insurance. Romain Rouge jumped neatly over the two fences in the HOYS final with Madeline before the ride and confirmation judging and did not put a foot wrong for the ride judge. “I can’t fault him, he was fantastic”, said a delighted Madeline. The win was watched by the horse’s breeder, Mary Simmons, who came over especially from her home in France to be here for the final. “He was bred to be my horse, by a Welsh section D stallion out of an Anglo Arab mare, but I had health issues and sent him over to Madeline as a 14.3hh, black, unbroken four-year-old. Madeline has done everything and I am so proud with the way he has turned out”, said Mary. Madeline has had the nine-year-old grey gelding for five years. “My own horse had damaged both hind suspensory ligaments. Romain was a bit quirky and needed a job so he was offered to me, but I was surprised when he just turned up on the Parkers lorry!
Gemma Dunn and Kells Lad, fifth Cob final
He hates being alone, but we learned to work around it. I was devastated when my horse was injured and I was just so pleased to have something to ride.” Said Madeline, who works full time as a Science Technician at Nescot College. Romain loves doing dressage and the pair have recently started doing side saddle. They competed at the area 8 Side Saddle Show in June and won the Sunshine Tour Prelim Dressage in 2012. The grey is Anglo Arab, by the Welsh stallion, Foxglen Express, out of an Anglo Arab mare. The judges, Robert Oliver, Katie Jerram, and ride Judge Clare Oliver, had some difficult decisions to make. SFAS Conformation Judge, Katie Jerram, said: “Another year of Search for a Star and every year it gets better. I’ve loved all the horses and it has been an absolute honour to judge. The team behind the scenes have all worked so hard and without them we would not have today. An awful lot of time and effort has been put in to get to this level, and we have certainly seen some stars of the future.” SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina Mackenzie, said: “I am always impressed with the number of people wanting to have a go at Search for a Star, and the standard of horses and ponies coming forward just gets better each year. The atmosphere at HOYS was magical. It is wonderful to be able to give genuine amateur owners and riders this opportunity and I hope that many will go on to further success.” For more information on SEIB Insurance Brokers Search For A Star, visit www.search4astar.org.uk or www.seib.co.uk

Day’s Premium Waxed Surface
ay Equestrian manufactures two standard wax coated surfaces Daytrack and Fibreride. Daytrack premium waxed surface has been designed to cater for the specific needs of the various equestrian disciplines. Day Equestrian’s computer controlled processing plant can mix to a high degree of accuracy and consistency, making it easy to deliver their generic recipes or to offer you a bespoke mixing service should you have different requirements.
Daytrack
Daytrack has been developed using the key elements of a high quality washed silica sand to give stability and free drainage, carefully selected fibre to mimic a grass root structure, and rubber to produce good energy return to stop the surface feeling “dead”. This is then coated with a specially blended Equestrian wax at very high temperature, which binds the mixture together.
Fibreride
MANUFACTURER OF QUALITY WAXED SURFACES TO SUIT ALL DISCIPLINES
Daytrack product benefits: ➤ High stability from day one ➤ High energy return to stop the surface feeling dead ➤ Low maintenance ➤ Low kickback ➤ Dust free ➤ Suitable for indoor & outdoor use
Fibreride offers all the benefits ➤ Compatible with most of a premium riding surface, other waxed surfaces, well-suited to even the more so can be used to top up demanding disciplines, but at existing installations a more economical price. The product known as “Fibreride” is a mixture of high quality silica sand, carefully chosen synthetic fibres and coated with specially blended wax at high temperature. The silica sand ensures good drainage and stability to the surface; the fibres provide a “root structure” similar to that of turf, so offer support and cushioning; and the wax acts to bind the materials together to offer durability. Fibreride is a consistent allpurpose affordable surface that requires minimal maintenance.

Having made a considerable investment in your surface, it makes sense to look after it properly. Using the right equipment is vital in keeping your surface in tip top shape, as well as preventing maintenance from becoming a chore. As a rule of thumb, if a surface has fibre in it, be it waxed or not, you will need to harrow it. This loosens up the top of the waxed surface stopping it becoming too compacted. On a nonwaxed surface it remixes any fibres that have come to the top. How regularly you do this depends very much on usage and personal preference. Day Equestrian can offer both tractor mounted and towable graders, designed specifically for use on waxed or fibre surfaces. These graders are simple to use and very robust, with easy adjustment for depth. They also come as standard with an easy to use pop out plate to bring material in from the kickboards and so fill in the track. The tractor mounted graders come in a range of sizes from 1.5m up to 3.0m and the towable grader from 1.5m to 2.0m. If you are thinking about installing a new surface or upgrading your current one call 0845 0066 444 or visit www.daygroup.co.uk to find out more about Day Group’s equestrian surfaces.

The RS-tor is an ideal safety product to use when hunting
Happy Hunting this Season! By George Gorman of www.rstor.co.uk Photography by Jules Aldred
Your horse must be healthy, fit and sound to cope with hunting’s rigours.
This rider, Amy Biggs, is safely kitted out for Autumn hunting with a helmet and air jacket.
The autumn and winter seasons The RS-tor bring the opportunity to take our Take an RS-tor riding safety aid. The RS-tor provides the perfect horses hunting, and few things beat safety companion whilst hunting, and is perfect for keeping you secure in the saddle, especially if you horse becomes excited and commandeering our equines across bucks, rears or spooks. It is ideal when jumping, when the reins the South East’s beautiful countryside become slippery from rain or sweat, and when tackling fences as drops, as you can hold onto the RS-tor at the same time amongst friends. So if you haven’t been such as slipping the reins through your hands, keeping you stable and hunting before, perhaps 2014 is your balanced. For more information visit the website www.rstor.co.uk chance to start?
T
he most important thing when considering hunting is that your horse is healthy, fit and sound. Rider fitness is also important to ensure you are safe in the saddle whilst tackling a variety of different terrains, conditions and jumping efforts, but often the most common issue holding riders back from the hunting field is the puzzle of correct hunting etiquette and dress code. The traditional discipline of hunting can prove somewhat of a dress-code conundrum for horse owners, so we thought we would provide a basic guide and some top tips for how to ‘fit-in’ on the hunting field this season.
Local hunts
There are many hunts in the South East, including the ‘Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt’, which covers the Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire areas; the ‘Ashford Valley Tickham Hunt’, based in Kent; ‘Old Surrey & Burstow West Kent’, which covers Kent and Sussex; ‘Southdown & Eridge’ which primarily covers Sussex; plus Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds and the Coakham Bloodhounds, which drag hunt across the South East. Check out www.bailyshuntingdirectory.com for more info.
What to wear
Adults going hunting that have not been awarded colours by their hunt must wear either tweed during the autumn (or ‘cubbing’) season, and black or navy coats as the season migrates into the main winter season. Smart, beige-coloured (not white) breeches should be paired with long, dark-coloured boots. During the main hunting season, a white or cream stock, properly tied and secured with a plain pin, is advised. Ladies’ hair should be secured via a hairnet, or a plait for younger riders. An up-to-standard helmet with a three point chin strap is paramount for safety, while body protectors, air jackets and RS-tor rider safety aids (see below) are of course allowed. Extra safety precautions are very sensible, as the risk factors for falls increases on the hunting field.
See the RS-tor at Libby’s International’s Olympia stand: G45
Getting started
1. If you are interested in going hunting, but haven’t been before, get the number for your local hunt secretary to get advice about your first visit. They are there to help, and will be able to tell you all about the meeting venue, dress code, parking and payment, known as the cap. 2. Ensure you wrap up warm, so you can relax and enjoy yourself. Hunting days can be long, so make sure you are prepared for the elements. 3. If you haven’t been hunting before it may be wise to go with a friend, preferably with a well-behaved horse that has been before, as this will give you confidence. If this is not an option, tell the hunt secretary this is your first time, and he or she may be able to suggest someone to meet up with you on the day and will at the least be aware, and therefore able keep an eye on you. 4. Always shut gates if you are the last through, unless told otherwise. Not doing this could lead to farm animals escaping, which could be dangerous and certainly would result in an unhappy farmer. Practise opening and shutting them at home beforehand with your horse, to make sure you are both comfortable with the process. DECEMBER 2014 / JANUARY 2015 Localrider 63

What’s Atypical Myopathy? Words by Suzanne Duncan, BVMS, Cert AVP (EM) MRCVS of Arundel Equine Hospital
A
typical myopathy was first recognised back in 1984, but has largely come to prominence over the last few years with outbreaks in the UK and Europe. It occurs in individuals or groups of horses at pasture and is likely caused by ingestion of seeds known as ‘helicopters’ (and possibly to a lesser extent leaves) of the sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) that contain a specific toxin. This toxin has been identified as hypoglycin A. The amount of toxin within seeds is variable and it is not understood why some seeds have more toxin than others nor is it understood how many seeds have to be eaten for a horse to become sick. It is likely that some horses will be more susceptible than others with younger horses appearing particularly susceptible, particularly those in poor bodily condition, on relatively poor quality pasture. As older horses are less likely to become affected it may be that they develop some tolerance to the toxin.
Changes in the weather
Incidences tend to occur in the autumn and in the spring following large autumnal outbreaks and are often following a sudden adverse change in weather conditions, such as a frost or heavy rain. This year heavy winds seem to have played a factor in causing a significant increase of seeds on the pasture over a short space of time. It can cause a variety of clinical signs which can present as dullness or lethargy or as a sudden onset of muscle stiffness or weakness that can progress rapidly to recumbency (resting/lying down). Other reported signs also include reluctance to work, choke, whinnying, head tossing or an abnormally low head carriage. It can affect the diaphragm resulting in difficult or laboured breathing and some cases may show some colic like symptoms such as paddling or stretching the limbs. Due to the breakdown of the muscle, urine often appears dark red and brown. If it affects the heart muscle it can result in a fast or irregular heart beat and in the worst case some horses may present as a sudden death. The mortality rates vary from 40-100% and vary from year to year.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on clinical signs alongside an increase in serum muscle enzymes (AST/CK) and the presence of red/brown urine.
In horses that do recover, recovery is initially slow, but most go on to make a complete recovery and return to work with no longterm effects of the disease.
Prevention
Given the high mortality rate prevention is better than cure. If sycamore seeds are present in your fields then the following is advised: • Avoid letting horses graze pasture that are contaminated with the sycamore seeds. • Move horses out of the field to as distant a point as is practical, or stable the horses during the risk period. • If you are unable to remove horses from pastures then fence off areas where the seeds and leaves have fallen and offer supplementary hay, but do not leave it on the ground to get wet, and feed extra concentrate. • Rake up or hoover to remove the seeds, dead leaves and saplings where possible. • Reducing the stocking density can help to ensure there is good grazing for every horse. • If you are suspicious that your horse may have ingested some of these seeds then call your vet out to check the muscle enzyme levels (AST/CK) to identify subclinical and pre-clinical cases. If you suspect that your horse is showing any signs of atypical myopathy then contact your vet IMMEDIATELY. If you have any other concerns then please do not hesitate to contact your vet practice for further advice.

Treatment
Prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential if horses are to have any chance of survival. There is no specific treatment only supportive care, which involves hospitalisation, intensive intravenous fluid therapy and nursing. Fluids are required to provide cardiovascular support as horses can become very dehydrated and to support the kidneys as the product of muscle breakdown (myoglobin) can affect their function and can cause renal failure. If there is concern over the kidney function then they may also be given a diuretic to help the kidneys maintain a good urine output. This condition can be extremely painful and so a variety of powerful painkillers and antiinflammatories may be required. When horses become recumbent then they require frequent turning to encourage them to stand and to prevent sores. If they are inappetant then they are provided with an alternative source of nutrition usually by stomach tube in order to provide their energy requirements. Supplementary vitamins and minerals have also been shown to be useful in some cases. Prognostic factors for survival are normal mucosae, no respiratory distress signs, a standing position most of the time, no temperature, and normal abdominal transit. Factors unfavourable to a recovery include recumbency, abundant sedation, anorexia, tachycardia (a high heart rate), tachypnoea (high respiratory rate), respiratory difficulties and severe acid-base disturbances. Euthanasia may have to be considered when horses appear to have reached the stage where they are no longer likely to respond to supportive treatment.

How secure are your paddocks? It is normally around this time of year, when the ground is wet, the fence posts are wet and the horses are leaning over the fence to reach the greener grass that something simply snaps or breaks completely. Now is the time to check your fencing and here Mark Scott talks through what is currently available on the market and how much you should expect to pay.
E
questrian paddocks can be fenced in a variety of materials, using different installation techniques. I will briefly run through a range of those, that in my opinion are safe and fit for purpose, from the affordable to the more expensive, but robust longer life alternatives.
Cost effective fencing
The most cost effective option is electric tape, rope or wire forms, these can be installed on simple plastic multi wire push in posts. Systems like these can be purchased from £1.80 per metre, including a 12 volt fence energiser. This system offers flexibility for the horse owner to move the fencing as and when required. To make this system more secure and to maintain the tape tension, it may be worth considering punching in timber fence posts with screw on eyelets to support the tape. Simple gateways with a spring loaded and insulated handle can be Posts with fitted. These systems cost around £4 electric horse per metre, based on wooden posts tape and two wires attached to the post.
For all your New Arenas and Gallops, Maintenance and Refurbishments
Equifence
This is a specifically designed wire fence (similar to stock fence), which is manufactured up to 1.5 metres high, with smaller wire windows to avoid horses “pawing” with their hooves and catching their shoes in the wire squares. Equifence is made with high tensile wire, which is much stronger than regular non tensile wire, it requires around 25% less posts per length and lasts longer, although it is more difficult to work with and erect. Installed it costs around £10 per metre.
Post and rail
There are many post and rail options available, including rustic riven or split chestnut post and rail with mortised posts. This style while attractive is better for boundary situations away from horses, as there are too many sharper edges and protruding post tops for the welfare of the horses contained, I have heard of impalements on posts while exuberant jumping attempts are made.
5” x 3” square posts with 4” rails
Double rails of Octowood The images of this style of fencing provide an idea of materials and specification, the costs vary from a simple two rail system at around £10 per metre installed, up to around £15 per metre for a four rail system attached to 5x3 posts as below. Four Rail System

As a rule it is recommended that fencing is best installed into moist ground as posts enter easily resulting in less post damage, coupled with the better chance of the post remaining firm in the ground, when it dries up. Posts punched into hard ground tend not to stay so firm in the longer term. Single strands of live electric rope attached to the top rail will preserve the fence life further, reducing the chances of sweat itch rubbing, wind sucking, chewing and so on. We at Mark Scott Arenas provide a winter fencing service to cover the included systems and many other types too varied to be able to mention them all here. Please call our offices for more information.

FEED NEWS
Feed the Chestnut Way this winter
Chestnut Horse Feeds provide complete feeds for a range of horses in many different disciplines.
C
hestnut Horse Feeds is a family owned business operating from the heart of rural Warwickshire with one key goal; to produce equine feed using only the finest natural ingredients. Chestnut Horse Feeds, pride themselves on the quality of their fibre rich complete feeds and unique Bulk Bin Feeding System, and are thrilled to be partnering with the one of the largest animal feed and saddlery superstores in the South East; Broadfeed. Previously only available directly from Chestnut Horse Feeds to a limited delivery area, this new relationship means that customers throughout the South East of England can now have the complete feed of their choice delivered to their yard in either 20kg bags or in the exclusive Bulk Bin Feeding System.
Long Chop Formula
Chestnut Horse Feeds provide a range of horse feeds ideal for all equines. Packed full of vital nutrients that provide optimum energy levels for the performance horse, without over exuberance, the high fibre, complete feed approach to feeding complements the digestive system. Chestnut Horse Feeds use a long chop formula that allows horses to trickle feed as nature intended allowing the digestive transit to be slowed. The high fibre formula of all products helps to neutralise stomach acid, therefore supporting gut health.
Complete approach to Nutrition
The Chestnut Horse Feeds range offers a variety of feed types to suit all horses and ponies. Alpha Plus, Alpha Easy and Sports Horse Mix provide differing levels of calories and energy levels, suitable for horses in light to hard work. All three products have one thing in common; a high fibre, complete approach to nutrition that minimises the amount of different feed types necessary by providing a comprehensive diet in one simple formulation. The competition horse needs high quality protein in the form of amino acids, for tissue repair, muscle function and performance. Alpha Plus, Alpha Easy and Sports Horse Mix contain this, along with a vitamin and mineral package which ensures optimum levels of antioxidants and nutrients are provided to support the whole body. High oil content also provides slow release energy to help encourage stamina and a healthy appearance, minimising the risk of excitable or unpredictable behaviour.

Winter Feeding
part II
Even if your horse is in very light work, if the temperatures plummet he will use more calories just in the process of keeping warm, so it is important to ensure your horse is receiving the correct diet this winter. Remember most of the companies featured here all have very helpful feed lines and if you need any advice just give them a call.
Keep Calm it’s new from Baileys
British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet
Baileys’ new Keep Calm is a high fibre nonheating feed for horses and ponies at rest or in up to moderate work. This new innovation contains Speedi-Beet, which provides highly digestible superfibres in a fully balanced low starch, low sugar feed. Designed to soak to a tasty mash in just 10 minutes, Baileys Keep Calm is barley-free, with linseed for a shiny coat, while extracts of flavours of essential oils give it an irresistible aroma. Keep Calm is ideal for horses whose owners are looking to control starch and/or sugar intake and is even suitable for those prone to laminitis. Formulated to maintain condition whilst helping encourage a calm temperament, Keep Calm’s Digestible Energy (DE) content of 11 MJ/kg puts it in the low to medium energy bracket. It also contains quality protein, to support muscle tone, and a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, including calcium and magnesium. For optimum gut health and digestive efficiency, Keep Calm contains Baileys Digest Plus prebiotic as well as antioxidants, like vitamin E, to support the immune system.
Over winter, forage (e.g. hay, haylage) will be the main dietary component for horses and ponies and by simply adding beet pulp to the diet, nutrient availability and degradability of fibre can be improved. Beet pulp feed, Speedi-Beet, provides calories by providing highly fermentable soluble fibre, namely pectin. This soluble fibre is fermented by the micro-organisms living in the horse’s hindgut where it is turned into energy and condition. It can also increase the nutrient value of the hay (or other forage) being fed. Speedi-Beet increases the general fermentation activity of the intestinal microbial population, with an overall increase in the efficiency of fibre digestion, again increasing the energy supply.

Blue Chip Feed Balancers Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the Blue Chip range will ensure that your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet, and because all the Blue Chip balancers are nutrient dense they are fed in small quantities. Blue Chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and include a fruit derived form of vitamin E, which is a powerful natural antioxidant. Horses can use up to 80% of their feed energy keeping warm; fibre is the most ‘warming’ feed, as more heat is produced during digestion of fibre than any other nutrient. All of the Blue Chip balancers contain a probiotic yeast which can double the digestibility of fibre in the diet, meaning that they will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ out of their hay or haylage. Blue Chip Original, as with all the balancers in the Blue Chip range is whole-cereal and molasses free, making it very low in sugar and starch. Original contains a probiotic yeast that can double the digestibility of fibre, meaning horses will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ from the fibre in their diet. Also included in Blue Chip balancers is a complete hoof and respiratory formula and a fruit derived form of the powerful antioxidant Vitamin E. www.bluechipfeed.com
Mollichaff Veteran Mollichaff Veteran which can be used as a partial hay-replacer and is ideal for older horses and ponies or those that cannot consume long-stem forage. Many elderly equines have loose or missing teeth and cannot chew long stemmed forage such as hay or haylage. Mollichaff Veteran is made from chopped ingredients so it is easy to manage and is very palatable too, making it great for fussy feeders. www.horsehage.co.uk
www.britishhorsefeeds.com
Rowen Barbary Senior Support As horses grow older they are less efficient at extracting nutrients from the feed which can result in weight loss. Senior Support combines high levels of oils with antioxidants and added Yeasacc1026 to help ensure efficient fibre and mineral digestion, keeping your veteran in tip top shape. Glucosamine HCL is also included to support joint mobility and help reduce any signs of stiffness displayed in the older horse along with Biotin for hoof health and added herbs spearmint and garlic. By feeding Senior Support you can help allivate the symptons that bring on the aging procees helping ensure your veteran comes through winter well ready for the season ahead. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

TopSpec Digestive Aid TopSpec digestive Aid is designed to optimise digestive health and stimulate appetite in horses. It contains vitamin B12 and high levels of a pure, protected probiotic yeast and a prebiotic MOS. It is particularly effective for horses that are working hard, on high concentrate/low forage diets, or stressed. It is ideal for use after antibiotic/worming treatments which can upset the hind gut microbial balance. This proven formula, containing grass and mint leaves with added peppermint oil to make the whole meal smell delicious, works on appetite both externally (appetising smell) and internally (via a range of ingredients). effects on the digestive system and appetite will start to show within two days but maximum effects on appetite from the ingredients that work within the body will be seen within three weeks. www.topspec.com
The Lifeforce Range from Alltech Most horses will have gone into winter with plenty of grazing still available in the field. However, horses that are living out 24/7 will be probably by now be relying on other sources of feed and forage to meet their nutritional needs to maintain condition and help keep them warm. The digestive system of a horse acts as an in built central heating system and fibre is the fuel that keeps it working efficiently, thanks to fibre digesting bacteria in the hind gut. If the digestive system becomes disrupted, this will have a knock on effect on the horse’s overall well-being, making it difficult for them to thrive against the elements during winter. Supplementing the diet with yeast cultures can help reduce hind gut acidity, creating optimum conditions for the beneficial bacteria to flourish, thereby improving fibre digestion, as well as nutrient absorption and buffering against digestive upset. The Lifeforce range from Alltech has been designed to optimise the digestive health of horses at every stage of life, from breeding stock to leisure and performance horses. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
