here is a wonderful mix of shows and events in this issue, we feature first timers through to professional riders, as well as a mix of disciplines including dressage, show jumping, eventing and showing as well as western riding. The highlight though has been compiling the Veteran feature on page 36. There are 12 pages of readers’ veterans and each and every one of them has a special and rewarding story to tell. There is Vicki Morton’s 29-year-old Bing, who won the Localrider sponsored British Showjumping League back in 2006. There is Copper, the oldest pony we feature at 38, who inspired young showjumper Raife Tansey to go on and make a career in the sport. As well as Karen Wellings’ Just Like Josh and Just Like Flyn who flew to the UK from Australia in 2003 and subsequently jumped in 1.40m classes around the country before retiring to a field in Sussex. Each of the stories pulled at my heart strings and I wish there was enough space here to give them all a special mention, but one of my favourites is 29-year-old Dubhie who lives on the Isle of Harris. This cheeky pony has taught lots of children to ride and in true pony fashion, he was completely unimpressed when he had his picture taken with William Fox-Pitt. I think Dubhie might be the least ‘local’ pony we have ever featured, but we don’t mind. February is always a strange month as it seems to bring the worst of the weather, hence our tips on keeping warm and coping with winter on pages 33 & 50. However, it is also a time for looking forward and preparing for the season ahead. Most of you will be aware that the standards applying to riding hats are changing and you need to check with the various clubs or societies you are affiliated to, if your current hat meets the standard required. Your Safety Matters is the subject of our feature on page 52 and we hope it inspires you to check your equipment, both for you and your horse ready for the season ahead. Do you love eventing, have you ever dreamed of owning an event horse and watching it compete at Badminton and Burghley? If you have, event rider Tom Crisp is offering a very affordable opportunity to do just that. Turn to page 30 to find out more.

T

he Mane Show schedule on online showing competitions gives everybody the ability to compete and win rosettes and prizes without leaving the yard. The schedule of classes varies each month and includes five traditional types of showing classes, five fun classes, five video classes, three Championship classes, and a Supreme Champion class. There really is something for everyone and every type of equine. The shows are run by Kent based equestrian, Kate Hudson. Kate said: “My horse is an 18.3hh giraffe and finding transport tall enough for him is a nightmare. So guess what – we don’t go out competing, we stay at home pottering around, occasionally hacking to a local competition. We work so hard on everything and I hate not being able to show it off. The frustration brought about by my lack of competing got me thinking that there must be a way around it – what can I do to make competing accessible to all? How about the ability to compete your horse without leaving the yard? An online show, accessible to absolutely everyone, photo classes and video classes, judged by professional equestrians and sponsored by some of the best companies in the business. Yes, I had it – the perfect solution – so The Mane Show was born. Entries open on the first of every month and close at 10pm on the last day of every month, with results being published early the following month. www.themaneshow.co.uk

Blue Chip Launch New Super Concentrated Balancer Having had such phenomenal success with the first two Super Concentrated Balancers (Calming Balancer and Senior Balancer) Blue Chip have launched the third super concentrated balancer in their range; Blue Chip Super Concentrated Daily Health Balancer. Blue Chip Super Concentrated Daily Health Balancer is wholecereal and molasses free and is designed to maintain optimal health in all horses and ponies. Combining the optimum level of essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, along with a complete hoof and respiratory formula, digestive supplement including a probiotic and Nucleotides which aid nutrient absorption, recovery rates and immune response, this balancer will ensure your horse or pony has everything they need on a daily basis. Research into super concentrated feed balancers has shown that this offers an easy and cost effective way to feed horses with the emphasis being on a fibre based diet that is then complimented by a balancer which ensures the correct levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Blue Chip Super Concentrated Daily Health Balancer comes in a handy 3kg tub and is so nutrient dense that a pony up to 14hh only needs 1 x scoop (50 grams) per day, meaning a tub will last approximately two months. An average sized horse, up to 16hh will need 2 x scoops per day, lasting an average horse one month and larger horses over 16hh will need 3 x scoops per day, lasting them approximately three weeks, which offers fantastic value for money. www.bluechipfeed.com 6 Localrider February 2016

Cold or wet feet? No thank you! Nico Katan of boot manufacturers Equitector says: “We all know what it feels like to jump off your horse with frozen toes. Not good. It does not have to be that cold for your feet to become like ice lumps. Leather is porous and whilst riding you will have a gentle draft flowing through your boots which is not noticeable. The draft will chill your feet and you will only realize how cold they are when you dismount. Equitector boots are designed to combat this. The waterproof leather boots have a heat reflective space blanket built in which works a bit like a vacuum flask. Within minutes your feet will warm up to your own body temperature and you won’t be affected by cold feet, even if the temperature is minus 20 degrees. Don’t think that these boots are just for winter, when the weather warms up they will help to keep your feet feeling cool. Equitector have an extensive range of long and short boots. www.equitector.com

Sport Relief in the South East Sport Relief is calling on the people of the South East to sign up for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games, taking place on Friday 18th to Sunday 20th March. With hundreds of local events taking place across the region, there is bound to be one near you. It’s the ideal incentive to get the gang back together and help each other stick to those New Year’s fitness resolutions. Maintaining that motivation until March will be a walk in the park. Participants can look forward to some serious fundraising fun by taking part with friends or family, dressing head to toe in fancy dress and making every mile matter by getting sponsored each step of the way. Comedian Johnny Vegas, is urging people across the region to get involved. He said: “You don’t need to be sporty to get involved with Sport Relief. The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games are back, and this year you can walk, run, swim or cycle to help raise cash to change people’s lives right here in the UK and across the world.” sportrelief.com.

Equine Sports Massage Lucy Gover works as an Equine Sports Masseur in West Sussex and Surrey and will travel to London, East Sussex, Kent and Hampshire for four or more clients. Lucy said: “Studying Equine Sports Massage and Human Holistic Massage allowed me to combine a lifetime of experience with a formal education, understanding how motion and daily exercising and routine can translate into strains and stresses for both the rider and horse. As with humans, horses are susceptible to aches, pains, stiffness and tight areas. However, they communicate their discomfort with subtle changes in behaviour, ears back as you tack up, becoming aggressive, evading commands whilst being ridden etc, etc. Any change in your horse, no matter how big or small could be a way to tell you that they are not comfortable or happy. With regular massage we can ensure peace of mind that your horse is feeling no aches and pains and is able to work to his full potential. I can help horse and rider individually or together, to allow you to work to your full potential with no aches, pains of stiffness so that you can perform to your best ability.” Benefits include: • Improves muscle function and range of movement • Increase circulation • Reduces risk of injury/prevents injury when soft tissue damage is noticed early • Improves injury recovery time • Improves stamina • Improves gait quality and performance • Reduces tension and tightness in muscles Mobile: 07772 933095. Good Friday Sponsored Ride Horse riders know the joy and value of riding and of contact with horses. Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled brings this experience to over 230 children and adults with special needs, offering them physical therapy as well as an element of freedom, pleasure and confidence and a sense of real achievement. Entirely self-supporting, the group raises vital funds annually through its Good Friday Sponsored Ride to help meet its costs. The participation of many able bodied riders is key to the Ride’s success.

RDA sends hats to Kenya

r

iding for the Disabled association (rDa) in the uK has helped its sister charity in africa with a donation of new safety hats. The hats have replaced older models that rDa Kenya was struggling to afford to update. When eu regulations prevented certain safety hats being used in the uK, Lambourn rDa group in berkshire decided to donate their stock of ‘as new’ hats to rDa Kenya. Lambourn group was able to replace its own stock of hats immediately thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, whose support of rDa uK enabled new hats to be bought for rDa groups at a substantially reduced rate. The hats for africa were kindly shipped for free by british airways to their new home in Nairobi, where they are already in use. In a letter of thanks to Lambourn rDa, Sue anderson, rDa Co-ordinator, Nairobi said: “a huge box of your beautiful hats arrived yesterday, just in time for our afternoon rDa session. Thank you so much. It means that we can retire our rather older models for your wonderful new ones. They work really well and are obviously a lot more comfortable for our riders. No doubt you know how difficult and expensive it is for us to keep up dating our equipment. your very generous donation is amazing and very timely. Once again thank you so much.” “We are thrilled that the hats we can no longer use in the uK have been donated to rDa in Nairobi,” said rDa Volunteer, Frances Lochrane. “We were initially very worried about how we would cover the cost of replacing our hats when the new regulations came in as we had only recently bought new ones, but thanks to the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery we now have a new supply. We have a close link to rDa Kenya and knew their riders would be able to use the existing hats and the fantastic gesture from ba to waive the cargo fee was the cherry on the cake, we can’t thank everyone enough!”

news Making Riding Accessible in the South East A new scheme is helping disabled people from around the South East to take up riding as a form of therapy and enjoyment. Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), in partnership with Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme has launched the Accessibility Mark scheme. Accessibility Mark status is awarded to a riding centre that has been approved by RDA following training and assessment.

SEIB Search for a Star

T

he 2016 series of the popular SeIb Insurance brokers (SeIb) Search for a Star and the SeIb racehorse to riding Horse Show Championship will begin in april with five qualifiers throughout the country. Now celebrating its 20th year, SeIb Search for Star will again offer the opportunity for more riders to experience the thrill of qualifying for and riding at the prestigious Horse of the year Show for the first time. Search for a Star was created by SeIb to encourage amateur riders to produce their horses to a high standard in the show ring and giving them the opportunity to realise their dreams with that coveted HOyS ticket. SeIb has a strong ethos of putting something back into equestrian sport and the company takes an enthusiastic interest in all the competitions they sponsor. Held in conjunction with the Search for a Star Classes, the SeIb racehorse to riding Horse Show Championship was created to support and encourage the re-education of thoroughbreds taken out of racing, re-schooling them and preparing them for a new career in the show ring. For more information visit www.search4astar.org.uk and www.racehorse2ridinghorse.co.uk as well as www.seib.co.uk/ horsehive

Black Moggies Need Homes

The scheme offers ongoing support and training, as well as access to a range of RDA programmes designed to help deliver the best possible experience to riders. In addition to the RDA centres that already support the South East, five riding centres have now been awarded Accessibility Mark accreditation. These are: Kingsmead Equestrian Centre and Laris Farm in Surrey; Grove Farm Riding School, East Sussex; Moorwards Farm Equestrian Coaching Facility, Buckinghamshire and Shedfield Equestrian Riding Centre, Hampshire. Jodie Maile, Yard Manager at Moorwards Farm Equestrian Coaching Facility said: “We have been accredited now for a year and enjoy welcoming new riders to Moorwards Farm. We offer ridden and grooming/interaction sessions so children learn about empathy, self-awareness and caring for others as well as developing their skills. It’s great to know we are part of growing our sport and supporting RDA with their high demand from disabled riders too.” It is hoped that these new services will open up more opportunities for disabled people in the area to enjoy the benefits of horse riding. Following the success of a pilot trial Accessibility Mark is now fully functioning and is primarily aimed at centres approved by the British Horse Society (BHS), the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) and the Pony Club (TPC). If you are interested in attending an Accessibility Mark establishment or know someone that may be, don’t hesitate, get in touch to find out more. To find your nearest RDA group visit www.rda.org.uk

Frances Reeves of Pussycat Lodge says: “Black moggies are always over looked at the rehoming centre. Hard as it is to believe, these lovely black cats are always left until last because of the colour of their fur.

Ebony who has the sweetest nature has been at Pussycat Lodge, based in Brentwood, for over six months. The volunteers are hoping to rehome Ebony and the other beautiful cats at Pussycat Lodge before the kitten season starts in the spring. Taylor aged five months came in with her mum and siblings. All have new homes except Taylor, mainly because she is black. Zoe was found as a stray wandering the streets, skinny and cold. Lisa aged three months is a real cutie and again all her siblings have been rehomed, but she is crying out for a good home. Please consider adopting one of our black beauties.” www.pussycatlodge.co.uk

news The 25th Anniversary of the Lambourn Open Day Lambourn has begun its preparations for the 25th running of The Betfair Lambourn Open Day which will take place on the 25th March 2016. This annual charity event attracts over 10,000 visitors each year.

Put to the Test John Field Everest Thermal Gilet Ideal for outdoorsy types, Belgian technical clothing brand John Field has unveiled its form-fitting, highcollared ‘Everest’ thermal gilet. The super flattering, reversible design is padded with Isosoft®, which is known for warmth, isolation, softness and compression. The eyecatching garment comes in two different colourways – Forest Green/Red and True Blue/Light Blue. RRP: £89.00 www.johnfield.eu

The unique event gives the general public with a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at some of the country’s top racehorse training establishments and meet the trainers, staff and, of course, the horses. Around 30 state of the art racing yards open their doors to the public each year in the ‘Valley of the Racehorse’. The main arena highlights this year include the popular Household Cavalry Musical parade, The Shetland Pony Grand National, a Puissance Showjumping display with top jockeys. There will also be pony rides for the children and a vast array of trade stands and food stalls to add to what is a great day out for all the family. The Open Day’s principal charity, The Lambourn Valley Housing Trust, looks after the welfare of Stable Staff, whether working or retired, in Lambourn. Since its creation the Open Day has raised over £1.5m and thus far, with that money, the charity has built 18 houses.

LR Comment: This is an incredibly lightweight yet extremely warm gilet. It was much longer in the back than many gilets which made it perfect for wearing outside as it kept out any annoying chills. Extremely versatile it can be rolled up into a small bag and is reversible too.

The funds raised give much needed scholarships to underprivileged Sherpa children, and bring meaningful opportunities to the people of Nepal. or have charge of a yard of sixty horses the message is the same: ‘routine testing, not routine worming’. all good worming programmes should be based on tests only adding wormer doses where they are essential. It’s a simple way to improve your worm control and slow down resistance. It usually saves money over time. best of all, if your head is full of more exciting things then Westgate will give you all the support you need with unbiased and correct worming advice.

Why does this matter? In the past all horses were treated as though they had the same parasite burden and wormed at intervals with suitable products. Nowadays we know that the majority of worms affect only about a quarter of all horses so the others are being given strong medicines which they don’t need. Importantly, every time a population of worms is exposed to the drug then the most resistant worms will go on to survive and reproduce, increasing the proportion for next time. resistance is a real and growing problem, affecting all worming drugs to some degree. This means that when you worm your horse it may work only partially or not at all. Once the resistant worms affect your animals and grazing then they will always be there so it’s not a case of returning to using that wormer at a later date. Treat only when necessary and save the wormers for the horses who need them. Small burdens of parasites are well tolerated by horses and even thought to be healthy, so don’t try to eliminate all worms. action is needed now before there are no effective wormers left.

Worming for the year ahead Gillian Booth SQP at Westgate Laboratories explains why now, more than ever, it is important to test your horse for worms. Finally give a specific worming dose to treat encysted redworm in winter, using either plain equest or five day Panacur Guard. you would only use equest Pramox if your horse needed treating for tapeworm too.

What next? Don’t worry if this is all new to you as Westgate try to make it all as easy as possible. you can buy everything you need on line or simply ring the lab for a free dung collection kit and send payment when you post the sample. Have a look online as there is lots of helpful information on the website. additionally advice and support is always freely available from the friendly, qualified team and that is what makes the system work. What should I do? as a first step reduce the number of routine wormers you give your horse each year. Instead put in place a routine testing programme, worm counting about every three months. This is suitable for mature healthy horses. youngsters, rescues and neglected animals will need more attention, often much more worming and also monitoring with worm counts. you can buy a season pack of tests from Westgate Labs, using the on line shop, to be ready for the year ahead and there are commercial packs and rates available for larger yards. all collection pots, prepaid return bags and submission forms are supplied so all you have to do is collect the samples then pop it all back in the post. you can be confident in knowing that the samples will be correctly prepared and analysed in a proper laboratory using a centrifuge to spin out the worm eggs. add to this two of the new saliva tests for tapeworm done six months apart.

Happy in a hackamore Word by Stephen Biddlecombe

M

ost equestrian enthusiasts will have heard of a Hackamore, but though popular in Western riding, fewer riders will be familiar with the use of this unique bridle system here in the UK. A Hackamore itself is a type of bridle which does not include a bit. Instead, the system works via a special type of noseband, which functions by applying pressure points on the nose, face and the chin of the horse, as opposed to the mouth. To those that have not used a Hackamore before, it can seem incredible that these woven strips of leather and hide, and in some cases metal on the nose, would have sufficient influence on guiding, or when required stopping the horse; but in actual fact, the hackamore is a very effective means of communication. A simple design, the hackamore, when in the right hands, can offer a sophisticated training tool that provides unique and valuable benefits.

Why use a Hackamore? A Hackamore can be useful in various situations. Firstly, it may offer an excellent alternative to equines that don’t get along with a traditional bit and for young horses exposed to training for the first time. It is highly useful for those horses with dental problems, or for horses with sensitive mouths, offering a go-to option if the mouth becomes sore from traditional bitting, allowing riders to ‘keep on riding’ and simply rotate between the two.

“The Hackamore is only as good as the hands on the ends of the reins”

Fitting the Hackamore A Hackamore has to be fitted carefully. The Hackamore noseband should be placed between the cartilage spot and where an English cavesson noseband would rest. The curb strap of the hackamore should be adjusted so the cheeks rotate at an angle of 45 degrees, and horse owners should be able to insert two fingers easily between the chin strap and the groove of the chin. World Wide Tack offers both a Hackamores are very popular in western Continental and an riding and apply a English Hackamore, subtle side-to-side alongside Sheepskin rocking motion. Hackamore accessories. The English Hackamore has a leather noseband as opposed to the stainless steel of the Continental option. The English Hackamore also has a shorter shank which offers less leverage, making it the gentler of the two options.

To find out more today about Hackamore bridles visit the website at www.worldwidetack.com

The use of a Hackamore can help to increase sensitivity, improve self carriage and refine performance. Nonetheless, the Hackamore is only as good as the hands on the ends of the reins! The system is not right for every horse and rider and can be misused in the wrong hands.

How does it work? Before a rider embarks on using a Hackamore, they must first ensure that their horse is confident, obedient, disciplined and has a solid foundation of the basics under saddle. Once the horse is in the Hackamore, he can no longer rely on the rider’s hands for support.

“Finesse, not force”

Horses bitted traditionally that have sensitive mouths are often tried in Hackamores, particularly for show jumping.

The rider needs a sophisticated touch to clearly communicate, as riding in a Hackamore is about finesse, not force. It is easy to send mixed signals, as although the Hackamore applies pressure in the familiar ‘pressure release’ concept, it creates a subtle side-to-side rocking motion designed to provide little lateral control, because both reins of the hackamore connect at exactly the same location.

Insuring the Veteran

Tips on insuring your older horse from Petplan Equine, a leading specialist equine insurance provider First and foremost consider whether your horse needs to be on a Veteran policy which usually only provides cover for injury and not illness. Some insurance providers class horses as Veterans from 15 or 16 years of age, but as most horse owners know horses in their late teens are often still in full work and regularly out competing and enjoying themselves. The good news is that some insurance providers do insure horses for illness as well as injury up to their 25th birthday so make sure you double check if your policy covers illness or not. Charlotte Gibbs, Senior Marketing Executive at Petplan Equine explains. “As horse owners and lovers ourselves, we understand the concerns involved with owning an older horse. Be aware that Veteran Policies do not usually cover illness providing no cover to help pay for the treatment of conditions such as Colic or Cushings Disease which older horses can be susceptible to. Don’t assume your horse is too old to insure. If you have an older horse you may be surprised. At Petplan Equine we recognise that horses are living healthy, active lives for longer and this is why if you insure your horse on our Horse Insurance policy before it’s 20 we will continue to provide cover for illness and injury until its 25th birthday.” The most important aspect of all equine insurance is that you understand your policy enough to be sure your horse is covered so if you are unsure - always ask. Unique Opportunity

To share in a four star event horse

S

ussex based event rider Tom Crisp is looking for someone to share in the pleasure of owning and competing his four star event horse, Cooly’s Luxury. Gifted the horse by his previous owners at the end of last season, Tom is now looking for an individual or small group of people to form a syndicate to help with the costs of running a horse at four star level. The 13-year-old, 16.2hh bay gelding by Olympic Lux has already finished 11th and 19th at consecutive Burghley Horse Trials as well as 14th at Luhmuhlen. With plans to run at both Badminton and Burghley in 2016, this is a wonderful opportunity for an enthusiastic person or group of people to share in the excitement of owning an event horse competing at the world’s most prestigious and testing events.

What’s involved The annual cost to run Cooly’s Luxury has been set at £16,000, which will include all costs, without limitation his livery, training, competition and standard vets fees. The new owners will be welcomed into Team Crisp and invited to spend as much time watching their horse as they want to. Their name or company name will be listed in the programme at events and they will have access to the horse at all competitions including owner/ member passes. Access at the big events extends to the stable area, warm-up arena and collecting ring, plus Tom is happy to walk the course with the team. There is always a gazebo set up at the horsebox for owners to sit, relax, chat and to indulge in food and drink. Plus the big events such as Badminton and Burghley also have a number of drinks parties and dinners for event horse owners to attend, as well as the celebrated cocktail parties.

Nines in the dressage

Ready for Badminton Cooly has been scanned and checked over by the vets and is fit and well, ready for the 2016 competition season. Having been campaigned lightly as a young horse Tom feels Cooly has three to four years left at top level and can reassure interested parties that when he does retire he has a home for life with Tom and his family in Mayfield. Tom, his wife Sophie and their two children are based at Sophie’s family yard in Mayfield in East

Sussex, where they have extensive facilities including an indoor school and sixty acres of grazing. Team Crisp is small yet enthusiastic and currently Tom has two other owners, both of whom have more than one horse based with him. If you enjoy the thrill of eventing and would like to support Tom and Cooly’s Luxury on their quest to represent you, the team and their country at the pinnacle of the sport then contact Tom to find out more.

Cooly pictured in the dressage arena at Badminton 2015 and going cross-country and show jumping at Burghley in 2014, where he jumped double clear.

Dressage pic is by Nigel Goddard

Having jumped double clear at both Luhmuhlen and Burghley, Tom has been focusing his attentions on Cooly’s flatwork, training regularly with Ian Woodhead, who has been responsible in the dressage marks achieved by a number of the leading British event riders. At Burghley last year their hard work was rewarded when Tom and Cooly scored a number of Nines for their trot work, unfortunately though their overall score dropped when they blew three of their changes, something they aim to perfect this year.

WINTER

Mud mud mud! I

t is virtually impossible to keep horses and at some point throughout the year not encounter mud and this winter has been particularly bad. There has been mud, mud and even more mud. The most debated question with regards to mud is whether to hose the legs or not. The answer probably comes down to personal preference and experiences you have had with your own horse. A retired army officer once said: “Hosing is fine as long as the legs are dried properly afterwards.” It is the water dripping down the legs that can lead to mud fever in some cases more than the mud itself. He said in the army they used some baler twine and pulled it down each leg, to scrape the excess water off, just like a sweat scraper would on the body.

Hot Horse Shower If the thought of battling with the hose once more in freezing cold temperatures fills you with dread then you might want to consider investing in a Hot Horse Shower. Totally portable and powered by propane gas, the shower can be moved around the yard as and when needed or set up in a wash-bay area. The water is heated as it flows delivering an instant blissful hot shower running at mains water pressure. You can use it warmer or cooler, by twisting the burner control. It is also perfect for using to bath horses throughout the year.

Shapley’s Original M-T-G Plus Shapley’s M-T-G has shown to be of benefit to a number of skin conditions since 1938 including Rain Scald, Mud Fever, Sweet Itch and Tail/Mane and Rubbing. It has been formulated to eliminate the causative agent creating the skin problem. It conditions the skin and hair around the damaged area, promoting both healthy skin and maximum hair growth. It is easy to apply and some users have seen up to three inches of mane and tail growth in just one month.

Understanding

Equine Psychology Horses don’t think like people That’s why so many people have problems with horses. To get along with horses, become safer, and achieve personal excellence, we need to learn to think like horses. Put yourself in the horse’s shoes. You are a prey animal. Your whole life is spent trying to avoid ending up as somebody’s lunch. Your eyes are set on the sides of your head so you have almost 360° vision. You can see potential predators approaching from just about any direction, and you’re always on the alert for them. You also have acute hearing, and you know that any rustle or unusual noise could signal the approach of a predator (things like rustling plastic can sound just like this!) For a prey animal like you, one second’s hesitation could mean the difference between life and death.

A Supreme Athlete You, the horse, are a supreme athlete. With your primary means of survival being escape, the first thought is always going to be to run. You make sure you are never in a confined or narrow space where one or more of your escape routes might be blocked. Your speed is all you’ve got, but if you are cornered, you have one other option: fight for your life. You have lightning-quick reflexes, and can strike, wheel, and kick in almost a single move. You are not usually aggressive, typically choosing flight rather than fight, but if you have no other option, you will do whatever it takes to defend yourself. Predators (like humans) are easy to identify. Predators have eyes at the front of their head, and walk boldly and directly straight up to things they want. They smell like what they eat (meat). They focus hard on you when they’re trying to catch and kill you, but most of them can’t run as fast as you. It’s only when they catch you by surprise or gang up on you that you haven’t a chance.

The Basis of Equine Psychology To understand the psychology of the horse, you need to understand his perspective on survival. Almost every reaction is based on this need to survive. To put things into simple terms, there are only four things that are important to horses: •

Safety

Comfort

Play

Food

Once a horse knows he is safe, he will put effort into staying comfortable. If he feels both safe and comfortable, then he will play. Horses are extremely playful, social animals. The final part is food.

Life in Humansville All of this is especially related to the horse’s life in Humansville, and it might help you understand certain situations, like why trying to entice a horse into a metal cave on wheels (a horse trailer) using carrots doesn’t usually work too well. Hint: he’s more concerned with protecting himself. Inside every wild horse is a gentle horse, and inside every gentle or domesticated horse is a wild horse. Never, ever, forget this. You can’t change millions of years of nature’s programming. You can’t force a horse to like you; you have to convince him that you are his friend, his leader, and a part of his herd, even though you look like a predator.

horse. If the horse is skeptical or afraid, he is telling you that he still thinks of you as a predator. What you have to do is prove to him that even though you look and smell like a predator, you wouldn’t hurt him even if you could. When horses are afraid, they’re not afraid of being hurt – they’re afraid of being killed. Next month we will focus on Comfort, Play and Food. My favourite though has to be Christmas and New Year Riding Holidays, while perhaps slightly niche, it is a testament to the enthusiasm for exploring the world from the back of a horse that this division in types of holiday is even necessary.

HOLIDAYS There is something magical about riding a Marwari horse through the rich and varied landscape of Rajasthan, and Horse India does just that. A collaboration between Surrey based Caroline Moorey and ,your host and ride leader, Dr Rao Ajeet Singh.

Granary Mead Cottage offers instant access to the numerous tracks of the New Forest

Ride India says: “Feel the spirit of the Marwari horse as you discover the history, culture, forts and palaces of Rajasthan by retracing old routes through the forests of the Aravalli Hills, and riding over the sand dunes of the Thar Desert.” This company offers a fabulous range of holidays, several of which take in special events and shows. Ride along the Osian Desert Dunes and experience the Nagaur Horse & Cattle Fair or take part in the Godwar Festival and Horse Show, and then ride from Khumbhalgarh Fort to Jawai in search of Leopards. The shows and fairs are date specific, but throughout the year there are opportunities to take part in different events, including the famous Pushkar Horse & Camel Fair. For those who wish to experience the grand splendour of India and a time gone-by the Palace to Palace ride should appeal, while those feeling a little more adventurous could consider riding through semi-desert and sand dunes, visiting the Jain temples at Osian, and camping near rural hamlets. For those wishing to mix some riding with a wider tour of India there is the opportunity to stay at farms, which offer full board accommodation and riding on a daily basis. Horse India continue: “On safari we will share with you the thrill of riding the unique and spirited Marwari horse, you cannot ride this breed anywhere else in the world. Intelligent and loyal, they have distinctive ears that touch at the tips and rotate 180 degrees. Solo travellers, groups, families and nonriding partners are all welcome.”

Winter Warmers with the Wow Factor! Want to look stylish and keep warm? According to Liz Hayman, designer and MD of equestrian fashion clothing brand Equetech, you Liz Hayman MD don’t have to wander around & Designer, Equetech looking like the ‘Michelin Man’ in order to keep warm. Here Liz shares her top tips and advice on looking great this winter…

J

ust because you need to wrap up warm this winter, it doesn’t have to mean wearing thick bulky layers. With the huge advances in fabric technology, it’s no longer necessary to pile on the heavy layers, which will not only slow you down, but also make riding (or even mounting your horse) cumbersome. The type of fabric is important too, as it needs to wick away moisture, otherwise if you perspire while riding, you could end up feeling even colder once you begin to cool down.

Gilets - a clothing essential Gilets are perfect for those milder winter days, when a coat is too much or for colder days, when they can be worn as an extra layer under your jacket. Again, choose with care and Equetech pick one, which Kingshill gives you a Hooded Gilet nice shape, as well as keeping you warm. The Equetech Kingshill Hooded Gilet will take you through from winter to spring with ease.

Functionality It’s easy to get carried away choosing garments from a fashion perspective, but remember you need them to perform when you are mucking out and riding in all weathers, so bear this in mind when you are shopping. Headwear is particular important for hiding ‘hat hair’ after riding and as an extra layer to keep you toasty and warm when undertaking yard duties. Equetech even make a thermal liner for riding hats, which will keep your lower face, ears and neck warm, perfect for winter hacking.

Choosing Breeches

It’s all about the base Technical layers are particularly important for your base layering, offering breathable and wicking properties. Wearing thinner multiple layers means that they are easier to remove and put back on and won’t make you feel ‘weighed down’. Equetech thermal undies are an everyday winter wardrobe essential for many riders and because they are styled in a technical, thin thermal fabric, they are easy to slip on underneath your riding clothes. Many riders also find Equetech Arctic Thermal Under Breeches are perfect for wearing on cold days. They are cosy and won’t ride up under your breeches, thanks to the stirrup foot strap. Whilst the outer layer can be thicker, don’t be tempted to compromise on choosing flattering cuts and styles. The Equetech range of coats are cut to compliment your curves, giving you a waist and shape, both in and out of the saddle. They also offer great insulation against cold weather.

Equetech Cross Knit Headband

Equetech Sherrington Jacket Equetech Ebony Breeches

When choosing breeches it is important to consider the type of fabric, your size and shape, as well as whether the colour is suitable for what you will be wearing them for. Breeches which incorporate knitted fabrics tend to have more stretch, but usually have less technical properties. Whereas woven fabrics are usually harder wearing, but can cost more as a rule. Two tone breeches suit slimmer builds, whereas breeches with a selfcoloured bottom will flatter most derrieres. It’s easy to get carried away with pastel colours, as well as cool white as an outer layer, but consider how it is going to look after 10 minutes at the yard, grooming and mucking out. If you are ‘hands on’ around the yard, choosing darker outer garments and teaming them up with brighter layers underneath will not only be more flattering, but also more practical.

Hands & feet Your hands and feet need to be looked after. Warm riding gloves and socks are ideal, but for really cold days, why not try silk glove and sock liners. Primarily designed for the ski market, they are great for keeping your hands and feet warm, without adding bulk, yet leaving you the sensitivity to feel the reins. Finally, always have a spare change of clothes in the boot of your car or in your trunk at the yard, just in case you get caught in a torrential downpour out riding. Stay warm and hopefully it will make riding more pleasant this season! For more information about the products mentioned and the Equetech range of clothing visit www.equetech.com

Stay warm this winter:

Tegan Clark’s

8 top tips Tegan Clark rides out in all weathers.

Tegan Clark

Exercising horses is an all year job and the winter months can be particularly hard and demanding. Tegan Clark rides racehorses for Trainer Roger Varian in Newmarket every day. Below are her helpful hints to stay warm this winter whilst riding out.

Tegan says: 1.

Invest in a good base layer. Don’t be afraid to spend on good thermals, top and bottom.

2.

I like to have a good neck warmer, one from any hiking shop always does the job.

3.

A good pair of thermal socks. I don’t like to wear two or three pairs as I end up not being able to feel my foot in the irons.

4.

I have a pair of T-Frost Riding-Out Trousers. They are the best thing I have invested in and have stopped me getting chilblains on my thighs for the last two years, well worth the money. I couldn’t survive a winter without them.

5.

I hate to over layer as I feel like I can’t move properly on the horse. Investing in good quality clothing helps to prevent over layering.

6.

A good pair of ear muffs that are attachable to your helmet keep your ears warm and can be removed at summer time.

7.

Gloves are difficult for me as I like to be able to have a good hold of my reins and chunky thermal gloves tend to make that difficult. So I just stick to normal riding gloves.

8.

Face masks are popular. Hiking and running shops do those.

Don’t let the cold weather put you off working with racehorses. Take a look at the available 17/1/12 14:12 opportunities Page 1 now on http://jobs.careersinracing.com

Your Safety Matters

Most of you will know that 2016 brings with it changes to the standard of hat which is acceptable for various competitions, clubs and activities. If you compete in a number of disciplines make sure you check with them all before starting your search for the perfect new hat.

T

he New Year is also a time to think about your other equipment for both you and your horse. Have you checked the stitching recently on your tack. How long have you had your body protector? The years can slip by remarkably quickly and the foam inside them does deteriorate over time. If you have an air jacket, have you stocked up on spare canisters. You might even want to send the jacket for a service. As the competition season approaches it is best to think about these things now, before your days are hopefully packed with competition and training. Treehouse Sporting Colours offer a wide range of safety products and here they share some helpful tips on what to consider this season. Plus there is 10% off for all Localrider readers. The Air Shell range (Gilet, Blouson and Air Show) have interchangeable shells, meaning you can swap the outer, depending on what you are doing with your horse.

What to choose? With the summer season fast approaching you may be planning your summer competition schedule or looking forward to some long hacks. Make sure you stay safe in 2016 by choosing the right riding gear. Treehouse Sporting Colours specialises in safety wear for riders and with many new products in their range, it’s the place to go for a wide choice of body protectors, air jackets and riding helmets. The new Racesafe Provent Level 3 body protector is lightweight, flexible and breathable, giving riders of all levels the freedom to perform whatever they are doing. It’s priced from just £132 and comes in a wide range of sizes for all body shapes. These days, more and more riders are discovering the benefits of

air jackets, whether they compete or not, and Helite’s Original and Air Shell jackets are a popular choice across all disciplines. The Air Shell range (Gilet, Blouson and Air Show) have interchangeable shells, meaning you can swap the outer, depending on what you are doing with your horse. The range is stylish, as well as offering better peace of mind in the saddle. Helite Air Jackets from Treehouse Sporting Colours are priced from £280 and come in a wide choice of colours, including high-viz! You can look the part too in a new helmet of your choice, with stylish models from Charles Owen, Champion, Gatehouse and KEP. There’s a helmet for every discipline, whether you event, show jump, compete in dressage, hunt, or stick to hacking out. Treehouse chooses to stock these four brands because their different designs cater for a variety of head sizes and shapes. Not every brand will suit every head, so it’s important to find the right model and ensure the best fit.

Stay ahead of the game There have been changes to some of the safety standards across the various disciplines in 2016, so before you invest in a new hat or body protector, check with your discipline’s governing body as to which standards they now accept. To ensure you stay safe, it’s essential to replace your hat if it suffers a severe blow and most riders update their hat every two to three years, due to wear and tear. Body protectors will need replacing if there is permanent damage or indentation following a fall and the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) recommends replacing your body protector every three to five years, depending on use. Treehouse recommends having your air jacket serviced annually, after six inflations or following a heavy fall. You can contact the company for details.

FEED NEWS

Feeding the Veteran Horse & Pony Medical care combined with a greater number of targeted feeds and supplements are helping to keep our wonderful veteran horses and ponies in great shape for much longer than we would have seen 20 years ago. You only have to read the wonderful stories in our Veteran feature of horses and ponies leading very active lives well into their late twenties and even thirties to realise this. Most of you will instinctively feel if a particular feed or supplement is benefitting your veteran, but if you are unsure or would just like to find out a little more information then talk to one of the very helpful feed helplines. All of the large feed and supplement companies have them.

British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet Ideal for veteran horses, Fibre-Beet is very palatable and easy to chew even if teeth are poor or missing. Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is suitable for laminitics. It can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in hot water. Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

NAF Five Star Superflex Senior Five Star Superflex Senior is a unique formulation providing our highest specification of the key joint support nutrients for horses, working in synergy with rich natural sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and naturally sourced antioxidants to support healthy, flexible joints in older horses and ponies still leading active lives. www.naf-uk.com

Cortaflex HA Regular Strength Powder & Solution Cortaflex is now fortified with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for even greater benefit to the joints, particularly those that have experienced excessive wear and tear. HA is a major component of synovial fluid, which is essential for providing the joints with lubrication and the cartilage with nutrients. Whether it’s the children’s pony which is ridden daily, teenagers competing at riding club, or mum’s hack, use Cortaflex to keep your horse or pony’s joints healthy throughout its life. www.equine-america. co.uk

NAF Devil’s Relief Devil’s Relief is a powerful combination of herbal tinctures formulated together with Devil’s Claw, a herb native to Africa. Devil’s Relief helps ease stiffness associated with limited flexibility. The older horse may particularly benefit from Devil’s Relief, not only because it directly targets stiffness, but also because the bitter action of this formulation can help stimulate the digestive system, and poor digestion and absorption are often associated with old age. Devil’s Relief can be fed to all horses and ponies with the exception of pregnant mares. www.naf-uk.com

Horslyx Feeding large, concentrated feeds can be overwhelming for a veteran, as their ability to chew effectively may be compromised by declining dental health and undigested food can result in digestive issues. However, they still require the necessary calories, nutrition, vitamins and minerals to maintain condition, weight and overall good health. Horslyx offers a simple solution to a balanced source of easy to eat and digest, high specification vitamins and minerals; including Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium to support a strong, healthy immune system. The palatable and nutritious lick can be supplied alongside good quality forage as a cost effective, complete method of feeding veterans, promoting a natural trickle-feeding pattern for easily digestible nutrition and optimum absorption time. Additionally, Mobility Horslyx, containing Glucosamine, MSM and HCl, can be fed as a supplement to veterans to support healthy joint function. www.horslyx.com

NAF Go Sound For total relief when he really needs it, Go Sound is the natural way to provide comfort to older horses or those needing additional support. Formulated using natural ingredients known for their comforting qualities, Go Sound is safe to compete on under FEI rules and can be fed to all horses and ponies, including pregnant mares. www.naf-uk.com

TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ very low calorie feed that contains a multi-supplement including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. This superb specification provides micronutrients to balance the diets of Good-Doers at rest or in light to medium work. Using TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and will not promote weight gain. Feeding it will help to improve hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer helps to maintain a healthy immune system and also includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue. Powerful levels of vitamin E and selenium to act as anti-oxidants, neutralising the harmful presence of excess free radicals which may speed the ageing process and, together with high quality protein, optimise muscle development and function. www.topspec.com

Equine America Cushins Crumbles Ponies and older horses are susceptible to the natural variations of the pituitary gland, which is responsible for hormonal production affecting blood balance, muscle and nerve condition and the immune system. When this variation relates to over activity it may be helped by the natural food supplement Cushins Crumbles. This contains Chaste Berry to assist ponies and older horses in supporting their natural hormone level, enabling a more healthy life, particularly if the horse or pony is prone to Laminitis. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Five Star Superflex Superflex is the right combination; a scientifically balanced ratio of readily absorbed Glucosamine and Chondroitin, the highest quality MSM plus the added benefits of a powerful anti-oxidant formula, exclusively designed to address excess free radical build up around the joint. Horses’ joints have to cope with extreme forces and it is commonly the cartilage that is the first part to show wear and tear. The key cartilage nutrients, Glucosamine Sulphate, MSM, Chondroitin Sulphate and Hyaluronic acid (HA) are well known for their support for the health of both cartilage, and the thick synovial fluid that oils the joint. Research recommends that feeding a combination of the key nutrients allows them to work together more effectively than any one nutrient alone. Getting the combination right is crucial. Five Star Superflex contains the right combination of key nutrients in the optimum ratios, developed over twenty five years of working with sound horses. Naturally sourced antioxidants are also included to work synergistically with Glucosamine and MSM to support joint health. www.naf-uk.com

Alltech Lifeforce Focus Lifeforce Focus is specially designed for leisure and companion horses or those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimize digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

FEED NEWS

Feeding Healthy, Flexible Joints! Kate Hore RNutr (Animal). Senior Nutritionist at NAF What is Joint Stress?

Joint stress is something that most horses will have to deal with on a daily basis. Whether competing or riding down the road their joints are subjected to concussive forces that will cause “stress”. But what is joint stress? Simply put it is any pressure on the joint. Whether a sudden one-off event or, perhaps more usually, repeated small pressures, reduce the protection given by the synovial fluid the “joint oil” within the joint. So whether we expect our horses to continually land over jumps soundly, stretch for the perfect extended stride or simply enjoy hacking out for miles, it’s important we consider sound joint health. The surface we ask our horses to work on will obviously have an impact – often literally. For example roadwork; while roadwork can be a great way of building joint strength, by gradually increasing work, overdoing it will result in long term damage. What about when we get to a competition? It’s tempting to think that you’ve worked hard just to get to the show so no matter what the surface is like you and your horse are carrying on. But what if the ground is too muddy from excessive rainfall, or even very hard and dry in the summer? It’s worth asking ourselves whether we should compete today, or just travel home and protect their joints for the future. Excess weight is also a consideration, and should be avoided in all circumstances. The heavier the animal the more strain put through the joints every time they extend their stride, jump or trot down the road – so keep a careful eye on their girth measurement. So once we’re happy that we’re building our horse’s fitness gradually, and keeping an eye on those extra pounds, what else can we do for their joints - both for now and throughout their lives? 68 Localrider FEBRUARY 2016

68-69-feed1-lrfeb16.indd 1

Why Nutritional Support?

Joint stress has probably received more scientific study than almost any other nutritional area. The results mean we now know which key nutrients are most important for offering joint flexibility and improving performance. Glucosamine sulphate, MSM, chondroitin sulphate, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants are all commonly discussed for joint health, and all have their roles to play. But of all these nutrients which are the most important, which should I feed to my horse? The simple answer is all of them. Experience tells us that a blend of all these ingredients working in synergy, as found in NAF Five Star Superflex, is preferable to any single nutrient. For sound, working horses a combination of the key nutrients will ensure they maintain flexibility for life, and improvements can be expected in performance markers such as stride length, joint flexion and stride elevation. In recent years research in both human and animal biomechanics has reinforced the role of omega 3 fatty acids, particularly in ageing joints. So including rich natural sources of omega 3s alongside those wellknown joint support nutrients, as found in new NAF Five Star Superflex Senior, is recommended for older horses, and where hard working joints are showing signs of ageing.

What’s New with Devil’s Claw?

For all those competing under rules, the question of whether a product is suitable to compete on or not is important. Testing now occurs at all levels of equine sport, from international to local shows, so no matter where you compete it’s important your horse’s joint support product is suitable and legal. Devil’s Claw has long been used to maintain comfort in equine joints, but as of January 2016 its key active constituent, Harpagoside, has been listed on the FEI prohibited list as a controlled medication. Whilst this recognises the natural power of Devil’s Claw it does place a responsibility on riders wishing to compete to find a suitable alternative. It doesn’t mean Devil’s Claw products are banned for horses however, not at all, just during competition. So if your horse finds the comfort from Devil’s Claw products, such as NAF Devil’s Relief, and you are not competing then it is perfectly suitable to continue using that. For those, however, wishing to compete it’s a relief to know that alternatives are available. Depending on your horse, a premium joint support supplement or an herbal solution for comfort in horses and ponies that is FEI legal, such as new NAF Go Sound, would be recommended. With the breadth of products available and a little thought to find the most appropriate for your horse, we can support sound, flexible, comfortable joints in all equines from retired ponies to Olympic athletes.

Haygain Hay Steamers Haygain hay steamers are scientifically-proven to produce palatable, dust-free hay and haylage, helping to maintain a healthy respiratory system to enhance performance and equine well-being. Steaming is easy; the bale is placed into the fully insulated steam chest and pushed firmly down onto the spiked manifold. The hay should be steamed for 50-60 minutes depending on environmental temperature and bale density. The freshly steamed hay is extremely hot but quickly cools and can be fed immediately.
