Welcome So much has happened in such a short space of time. Just after the last issue went to print, we headed to Great Bookham Equestrian Centre for two fabulous days at the Sunshine Tour Championships. It is always a favourite event of ours and it is great to meet new combinations as well as those who have been coming back for years. At the British Turn to page 38 to see the full report. Showjumping Ball The same weekend the South of England Horse Trials were being from left to right, held at Ardingly. There were lots of local success stories, including Davina Phillips, me and that of this month’s cover stars, Pippa Funnell and Billy Landretti, Chloe Richardson who claimed their seventh win at the event, to find out more turn to page 22. The next big show on the calendar was the Horse of the Year Show. We had some fantastic local results, read about our victorious local showjumpers on page 32. More stories to follow in the next issue. The Tuesday night before HOYS I was invited to the British Showjumping Ball in Birmingham to present prizes to the Club League winners (see picture). The British Showjumping Club Shows are a great introduction to the world of affiliated showjumping for the young or inexperienced rider. They also allow children to jump horses and adults to jump ponies. These glitzy occasions are always great fun and a wonderful opportunity to catch up with competitors before the pressure of the week ahead kicks in. As we head into November the temperature is already beginning to drop. In preparation for the months ahead we have a Winter Feeding Guide on page 70, plus lots of tips on how to survive winter. And for all of you, who like to plan ahead, we have a Christmas Wish List, with ideas for all the family, plus your four-legged friends too. And if you know someone who doesn’t already subscribe to Localrider, we have a great offer running at the moment, buy a year’s subscription for just £20.00. There is still a comprehensive competition calendar running over winter, so if you are out and about have fun and remember to let me know if you have any good results.

news Friendly Practical Feed Advice
B
Helen Gordon
aileys Horse Feeds have always prided themselves on giving sound practical feeding advice to all kinds of horse owners, either via their telephone helpline or through their team of Regional Feed Advisors. Sometimes, no matter how much internet research you do or how many leaflets you pick up in the feed store, it can be hard to decide just which feed is best for your horse. That’s when a trained eye and an understanding approach can really help so you can talk through your options with someone who understands equine nutrition, is knowledgeable about their own and other feeds in the marketplace and also appreciates what it’s like to juggle horse ownership with the rest of your busy life. Helen Gordon is Baileys’ Feed Advisor for the Localrider region. Point-to-point jockey turned amateur event rider and working mum, Helen can chat through your feeding queries on the phone or come and visit you to discuss your horse in person. She won’t advocate change for the sake of it, but she will help you find a practical way to provide your horse with optimum nutrition, whatever your requirements. Call Helen direct, on 07710 306929, Baileys nutritionists, on 01371 850247 or visit www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk for information, advice and details of Regional Feed Advisors throughout the country.
4 x 4 Needed – can you help? The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust is a small UK registered charity working in The Gambia to alleviate the suffering of working horses and donkeys and their owners. A large part of the work of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust involves holding mobile veterinary clinics throughout the Central River Region of The Gambia – an essential service for the farmers and their animals who receive little or no veterinary care elsewhere. The charity normally has two 4 x 4 vehicles to run these programmes, but a string of unfortunate events has left the charity with both its trusty vehicles completely out of service, and it is looking extremely unlikely that either of the vehicles will become road worthy again in the near future due to the extent of their problems. This means that the charity have had to halt all of their mobile veterinary clinics. As a result of this hundreds of horses, donkeys and mules will be unable to receive veterinary care throughout the area. There are no veterinary surgeons in this area of The Gambia, so without the GHDT clinics the equine owners really have no one to turn to. This time of year is an essential time for equine veterinary care, as the animals are coming to the end of their season of hard farming work with the crop harvests now being brought in. After a few months of hard work the working equine’s immune systems are at an all-time low and they are at greater risk of contracting the prevalent disease, Trypanosomiasis. This disease is easily treatable at a mobile clinic with one injection, but without treatment the disease is fatal. This is a desperate plea to ask for any support towards sourcing a new 4 x 4 left hand drive, twin cab pick-up vehicle for the charity as a matter of great urgency. This is something that is important to assisting the lives of working equines, but also their owners who rely on their animals for their own survival. The charity would be very happy to source the vehicle from anywhere in Europe and it will be shipped to The Gambia. If you are able to help but require further details about what the charity requires, please contact Heather Armstrong on 01306 627568 or email heather@gambaihorseanddonkey.org.uk If you are able to make a donation towards the purchase and shipping of a new vehicle, you can do so at www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk/donate.htm

Body Hugger Rug A brand new approach to rug design is on the market - the “Body Hugger”rug, inspired by a horse and designed by his owner Julia Dunn. Julia tried and tested the rug design at racing yards and one of her first customers was Arundel Equine Hospital, who use it on post-op patients. It’s proving to be a good design for horses of all types and breeds, preventing rubs on the horse’s skin and also horses prone to sensitive skin. It is easy to use, multifunctional and good value. Working out for winter fitness With dark evenings and short days many riders turn to lungeing as a means of keeping their horse ‘ticking over’ between weekends. Ten minutes of exercise on each rein will burn a few calories, but do little in terms of correct, physical work and even less in terms of enjoyment for both horse and handler. It is possible in that same twenty minutes to give your horse a workout that makes him use his back, promotes engagement and wither-lift, and develops balance and swing. You can do this by using an aid such as the EquiAmi lunge aid, which will simply and effectively bring about this way of going and improve your horse over the winter months. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that people are really surprised just how well their horses will work in the EquiAmi and how quickly great results are seen. The EquiAmi saves time, saves effort and makes life so much easier. Tel 01584 891049 or visit www.equiami.com

lstead Riding Club (ERC) members, representing the West Surrey Area, had another successful year at the British Riding Clubs’ NAF National Championships in Lincolnshire this September. Club members returned with numerous rosettes including an individual champion, a pairs second, an individual and team third place. Seventeen ERC members competed over the two day Championships. The weekend got off to a great start on Saturday (senior’s day) when Jenny Dutton was announced as individual winner in the Novice Riding Test arena. Jenny had brought her mare, 23-yearold Jamambo, out of retirement only a few months beforehand. They both rose to the occasion and were awarded with a Championship sash and rosette. Annie Denton on Malingold Mercury and Helen Klein on Limerick rode an extremely accurate Pairs Dressage test. The pair were delighted to be awarded second place in a field of seventeen competitors. A remarkable result as this was their first competition together following a substitution for the championship. Jump to it this winter Words by instructor Michaela Huntington

Finding a great local venue
T
he indoor show jumping season runs mainly through the winter months, starting at the end of September through until April, and most venues will run affiliated and unaffiliated competitions. Websites like www.localrider.co.uk, www.ridingdiary.co.uk and www.horseeventsuk.com list local venues in the South East, or log onto British Showjumping’s website www.britishshowjumping.co.uk, and search for ‘south east show centres’ for a comprehensive list of affiliated dates.
Check your local indoor venue and see what they have to offer to suit your needs; clear round and unaffiliated competitions will start from 50 – 60 cm up to around 1.10m. Show centre schedules will be clear on the rules and qualifications that each class has to offer, and most will host their own in-house championships at the end of the season; they will also hold qualifying classes for National Championships such as the Trailblazers Final, where you have first and second round competitions before gaining a ticket to the final. If you are doing well at local venues and would like to go to a championship show, Trailblazers is an excellent starting block before you decide to join British Showjumping, and become affiliated. Visit www.trailblazerschampionships.com. I advise not restricting yourself to any one choice of competition or venue; mix and match to your own requirements. The affiliated circuit has so much to offer, with classes at British Showjumping Club Shows starting at 70cm for ponies and horses. They unusually allow adults to ride ponies and children to ride horses. Points count towards regional league tables, with the championships being held at the end of the summer. A great Winter Championship Show for affiliated combinations is the Blue Chip Finals held at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, in April - see www.bluechipchamps.co.uk. These qualifiers start in October.
Ready to compete?
Before appearing at your first show, it is a good idea to be jumping slightly higher in training than you will be in competition, so that any first day nerves are settled and confidence is increased. Plus, before you head off to compete, make sure you are position perfect - in indoor arenas, the jumps come around very quickly. The correct jumping position should be comfortable for both you and your horse; you need to go with the motion of your horse over a fence, and not be ahead or behind in the movement. Ahead of the movement would interfere with his action, distract him and would often result in you being thrown backwards in the saddle. Behind the movement, and you are likely not to give with your hands, resulting in his head being jerked up, producing a poor jump or catleap, that prevents him travelling forwards over his fence. Your stirrups need to be short enough so that you can comfortably get your seat out of the saddle, allowing your horse to bascule (create an arc) through your legs. Your heels must stay down, and you need to have a bend in the knee, keeping your lower leg position the same and not allowing it to drift backwards. You should lean forwards, look ahead to where you are going, and move your hands a little up the horse’s neck to allow him freedom. He will be unable to jump correctly if you hinder him by not giving enough with your hands, or get out of balance with him over a fence. When your jump is complete, you need to be able to get back into the normal riding position easily.
Be safe when jumping
An absolutely invaluable piece of kit for the indoor jumping season is the RS-tor rider safety aid. It may also be used in affiliated British Showjumping competitions and Jump Cross events, and does not contravene Pony Club equipment rules. The product helps reduce the velocity of being unseated, for example when the horse catleaps, and also reduces the risk factors of a fall. It’s manufactured by PolyPads and costs £44.99 - available in Childs, S and M/L sizes. (Adults over 5ft usually select M/L). Visit www.rstor.co.uk. NOVEMBER 2014 Localrider 9

Good worming
Historically the start of winter was a good indicator that it was time to worm. Things have changed and these days it is possible through simple tests to determine your horse’s individual worm burden. Here Gillian Booth of Westgate Labs explains how.
M
odern worm control should be based on routine testing not routine worming. No one should still be worming horses as though they were all the same using wormers every few weeks or months regardless of whether they need it or not. Sadly though we know that this still goes on and it’s very worrying. There is already resistance Worm counts and saliva to two common worming drugs testing should be the core with growing worries about of everyone’s worming ivermectin and moxidectin. It’s programme. If you would really important to keep these like to know more or would drugs effective for when they are like to buy securely on line really needed so they should not in the new Westgate shop be used indiscriminately. please visit How to organise your www.westgatelabs.co.uk or programme: call the lab on 01670 791994. • A healthy adult horse should have a worm count taken three to four times a year spread through the seasons. Only worm if the count goes above about 200 eggs per gram otherwise leave low levels of worms as they are actually good for the horse. In a herd, target the doses at the wormy horses and leave the others untreated. Keep horses in as clean an environment as possible, regularly poo-picking, not over stocking, resting fields, cross grazing if feasible. • Use the new EquiSal saliva test at six monthly intervals and only worm for tapeworm if the result shows it is necessary. • Importantly, add a winter dose of plain moxidectin to treat possible encysted stages of redworm. This is the only essential actual worming dose in the annual programme.
Why tests are so important - a case study Horses can have had a lot of different wormers, but still carry unacceptably high and potentially dangerous worm burdens.
TEDDY’S TAPEWORM BURDEN Teddy is a well loved and cared for teenage red roan cob. Recently his owner Claire used the new tapeworm test and the result was ‘medium/ high burden’ so I asked Claire some questions: Q Has Teddy ever had a known problem with tapeworm? A No, but we’ve never tested before, only wormed for it once a year as per the accepted advice (he’s in a low risk situation, small herd poo picked/harrowed and cross grazed with sheep). Q What made you decide to test? A We routinely worm count for red and roundworm. The new tests make this an accessible option so I thought it would be worth a look to see what was going on. Q Was the result what you expected? A No not at all - the way he’s kept, the history of low worm counts for other parasites and the fact he’s been treated every year for tapes for the nine years I’ve had him - the last time in April of this year - meant the result was quite a surprise. I was expecting a low count whereas actually the test points to us having a problem we need to treat. Q What tapeworm cover has he had? A He’s wormed annually for tapeworm, usually with Pramox to include our dose for encysted red worm. This year it was in March. Q Have you had him weighed or do you guess the correct dosage? A He’s weighed regularly on a weigh bridge.
Clare and Teddy. Despite having been wormed for tapeworms as recommended Teddy’s saliva test showed an increased burden of tapeworm. Q Can you tell us a bit more about him please? A He’s 19, I’ve had him for nine years and touch wood he has been fit and healthy since I’ve had him. He’s in light work now, mostly hacking and schooling a couple of times a week. He lives out 24/7 in the summer, mostly on a track system to encourage movement and restrict grazing, in a small herd and on paddocks that are cross grazed with sheep. In the winter he’s in at night in a barn run and out in the day. Q What did you think of the test? A I think it’s a really good thing that testing for tapeworm is now an easy and affordable thing to do for the average horse owner, it will definitely give us more of a picture of what’s going in the horse and help us to manage this better. I’ll certainly be keeping a closer eye on these little blighters after getting this result! We were following standard practice; I thought what we were doing was fine but this test proves not... Especially with Teddy getting older I think it’s important for his health that I make sure his tapeworm count as well as his worm count stays at an acceptable level. The test was very simple - much easier and less complicated to do than it looked at the outset. Once he figured out he couldn’t eat it Teddy was fine with it too, no hassle!

INSURANCE Is your tack covered?
Insurance Matters
Nicolina Mackenzie, Marketing Manager for South Essex Insurance Brokers, demystifies the equine insurance policy, giving sound advice on how to maximize your cover whilst hopefully saving money too.
H
orse ownership should not be taken lightly and being able to afford appropriate veterinary treatment if required must be every owner’s priority. Insurance provides peace of mind and ensures that the financial implications of a horse that is sick, injured or causes personal injury become less of a problem. Insurance policies vary from insurer to insurer, for example, some do not cover the more expensive exploratory procedures and treatments needed or if they do, the owner could be expected to make a significant contribution towards the cost, whilst others do provide for extensive treatment if required. Some policies cover alternative treatments recommended by the vet, whilst others don’t and often there is a limit on the amount of alternative therapy that the insurer will reimburse.
What to look for Look for a policy that offers at least £5,000 of veterinary fee cover and to save some money on the premium ask for a higher excess. By agreeing to pay for example, the first £250, £500, or a percentage of the bill, a significant amount of money can be saved on the yearly premium. If diagnosis is difficult and exploratory costs are mounting without any real solutions, a good insurer can agree an MRI scan if recommended by your vet to get to the root of the problem. Once a diagnosis has been made treatment can commence immediately and the best possible outcome can be assured. Choose an insurer that offers help and advice when making a claim as they should have many years of experience and it is worth benefiting from their knowledge.
Benefits of a broker By choosing to purchase insurance through a broker there is likely to be a range of policies, options and insurers and they will be able to advise on the best policy for your particular circumstance and needs. They will also provide support, help and advice during a claim. Over the last few years veterinary fee claims have risen well above the rate of inflation and equine insurance has become much more expensive and sometimes beyond the reach of many horse owners. To accommodate this SEIB have introduced extra levels of cover and the option for a higher excess. These measures have assisted with affordability in times of economic hardship and clients have continued with cover in place for an emergency situation. Do not over insure if
your horse is in the field or just hacking around the block, for example, do not cover it for Three Day Eventing or hunting.
Emergency cover Another addition to the SEIB horse insurance options is cover for emergency surgery to save the life of the horse. The cost for this cover is reduced from the fees for the standard veterinary fee insurance, but it doesn’t cover general treatment. However, there is no excess for the surgery costs, but post-operative cover is limited.
Public Liability is a must When looking to insure a horse there is more to consider than just veterinary fee cover. Public liability is a must as a claim for personal injury to a third person can cost thousands to defend even if the owner is not found guilty of negligence. This cover can be added to an equine policy if not already included within the membership of an equestrian organisations to which you belong.
Check your tack Tack and saddlery is expensive to purchase and should be insured, sometimes it can be added onto a household policy at no added cost and it is always worth checking with the insurer as new for old can be an option, which is not always available on equine policies. Other cover is available on horse and pony policies including personal accident and trailers and horse drawn vehicles. However, save money by not adding anything to the equine policy that is insured elsewhere, choose the cover carefully and don’t over insure. Under-insuring the value of the horse to save money is a false economy as if sadly, the horse dies funds may not be available to purchase your new horse. Over insuring with the view to making money if anything happens to the horse is also not an option as the insurer will only pay market value, irrespective of the sum for which the horse is insured. Keeping a horse or pony insured should remain a priority. Veterinary fees are rising above the rate of inflation and liability claims can reach into the millions. Take time to choose the best policy for the circumstances and always read the small print. It is possible to save money on premiums, but it is important to make the right choices at the time of policy inception so as not to be left exposed if the worst does happen.

FEATURE For flatwork, riders are seeking a harmonious picture with the horse between hand and leg, and off the forehand The McHardy has five main, key points:
We all aim to ride in simple snaffles like this one – however a heavier horse with a small rider may benefit from a stronger bit with precise communication.
Don’t fear a stronger bit!
Words by Stephen Biddlecombe of www.bombersbits.co.uk
I
see many riders trying to muddle through with a bit that isn’t ideal for their horse. A really common sight is a slightly-built lady rider on a large horse, perhaps an Irish Sports Horse, who struggles to keep the horse between hand and leg, or off the forehand. It is often simply a matter of the rider’s core strength and size. Battling through with a ‘kind’ bit can have the unfortunate effect of heavy handed riding or niggling, as the rider struggles to keep the horse light in her hands. I advocate the Bombers Bits range, which is handmade in South Africa and is widely used by professional riders that need wellengineered bitting solutions with different mouth and cheekpieces. The range is renowned for its blue sweet iron metal, which oxidises easily, encourages salivation, helps bit acceptance, and has a warm, sweet feeling within the equine mouth. The famous blue hue of the bit fades over time.
1
A medium port to create space for the tongue. This relieves tongue pressure and allows the horse to relax, making it suitable for horses with sensitive or large tongues.
2
Buster roller centre - the 40mm roller link in the centre increases tongue and bar pressure, while reducing the ‘nutcracker’ action associated with single joint bits.
3
Blue sweet iron - the metal oxidises easily, creating a warm, sweet taste in the horse’s mouth. This encourages the horse to salivate, gently mouth the bit and relax the jaw, and can help horses who have difficulty accepting conventional metal bits.
4
2.5 ring cheekpieces - these introduce poll pressure as well as creating some leverage on the mouthpiece. When the reins are attached to the bigger ring, the bit has a more of a snaffle action, while the lower ‘gag’ style ring increases poll pressure for more control.
5
This bit has loose rings, which make it mobile within the horse’s mouth, further encouraging mouthing and softening. They also allow for immediate release of pressure when the rein aids are relaxed, thus rewarding the horse for a correct response.
The McHardy suits horses with a low head carriage that lean on the bit
Control and comfort
Bombers has a lovely bit in its range called the “2.5 Ring McHardy”. This bit is a combination of a Jointed Happy Tongue with a Buster Roller centre link. It is an excellent bit when more control or lightness is required, allowing at the same time comfort for the horse’s tongue. The McHardy is often suitable for horses with a low head carriage that tend to lean on the bit. It offers increased pressure on the bars of the mouth, which act to lift the head, while the ‘buster roller’ central piece increases pressure on the tongue, bringing the chin in and encouraging the horse to soften as he plays with the roller. Although some may consider this bit to have a strong action, I would say it is an exceptionally kind bit, as it is anatomically designed for comfort, and creates a still, quiet line of communication between horse and rider.
Customer feedback
Simone Erhardt has been using the McHardy on her shire horse Dunaldron for several weeks now, having previously ridden him in a dressage-legal bit with a curved mouthpiece and a barrel joint. “He was going very nicely in this snaffle, however is a big draught cross, and could get very heavy and ‘leany’ in my hands, especially during downward transitions,” Simone explains. “My instructor suggested something with a stronger action to help lighten the forehand, but we wanted a bit that would accommodate the horse’s big tongue, and also encourage mouthing and salivation. Stephen Biddlecombe spent time suggesting several bitting options to us, and we plumped for the McHardy. I can honestly say that as soon as the bit was fitted, Dunaldron was much more pleasurable to ride. He is more still in his head and neck, relaxes into a nice outline, which is much higher and lighter than previously, and our transitions are greatly improving. As a rider I can sit much stiller with my hands, and my position feels taller - it doesn’t feel like I am carrying or lifting the horse,” she explains. “It isn’t dressage legal, however for competitions we could switch to a Buster Roller Loose Ring.” Visit www.bombersbits.co.uk NOVEMBER 2014 Localrider 25

LEGAL
How to
buy
a horse Buying horses can be a fraught process unless you know what you’re doing. Michael McNally from Warners Solicitors explains how to protect yourself against the pitfalls.
I
f you buy a car or a house, the process will involve many formalities. If you are buying a horse, there will probably be few, if any, formalities. It’s hard to think of any other transaction where you can spend thousands of pounds or more simply on the basis of a verbal agreement. Nonetheless, this is still how most horses are bought and sold. This isn’t a problem until something goes wrong with your new horse. It is, unfortunately, all too common for the purchaser to complain to the seller that the horse has gone lame or is proving impossible to ride. So what rights does a purchaser have?
Written contract
Although a contract can be verbal only, a written contract creates more certainty. If the seller breaches anything agreed, you may have a claim against him for breach of contract or misrepresentation. Did you buy the horse from a business or from a private seller? This is important because it is only when you have bought from a business that certain terms are implied into the contract by the Sale of Goods Act. Where a horse is sold by a business, it must match any description, it must be of satisfactory quality and it must be fit for purpose. If, therefore, your new horse is lame or misbehaving, these implied terms could give you a claim for breach of contract. It will help your case if you made it clear to the seller what you wanted to use the horse for and you were told that the horse would be suitable for that purpose. If the seller breaches an express or implied term, then you will have the right to sue for damages (compensation), and/or rescission (termination) of the contract and your legal costs. Unfortunately, the seller’s answer may be that there was nothing wrong with the horse when he sold it. He may claim that it is entirely down to the way you’ve looked after the horse – or your lack of riding ability. Of course, a horse may exploit any weaknesses in his new owner’s control and the transfer to a new home may cause behavioural problems. In this situation, obtain a report from an expert in equine behaviour, who can conclude whether there is something wrong with the horse. It may be, for example, that the horse was drugged before pre-purchase examination – or it could genuinely be the purchaser’s fault. Unfortunately, if both parties obtain their own experts’ report, it may be that the case has to go to trial for the judge to determine
whose witnesses and experts he prefers. All this is likely to be extremely expensive, as well as stressful and time consuming for those involved.
Caveat emptor If, however, the seller is not a business but a private seller, then it is more difficult for the purchaser because the starting point is “caveat emptor” – i.e. let the buyer beware. You will only have a claim if you can prove that he was in breach of something he said or wrote before you agreed to buy. If the private seller gives no assurances, then you will have no claim against him if it subsequently turns out that the horse, for example, bucks – it is up to you to satisfy yourself during prepurchase inspection. If, however, the horse is described in the advert as a “schoolmaster”, but persistently bucks, you should have a good claim for breach of contract or at least misrepresentation (which applies when something false the seller said induced you to buy). Of course, if the horse only behaved well during pre-purchase examination because it had been drugged, then you could almost certainly have a breach of contract or misrepresentation claim.
Five-stage vetting Ideally, you should have a five-stage vetting carried out on the horse before you buy. This should reveal not only any pre-existing medical problems, but also any behavioural problems. If your vet fails to spot anything, then you may have a claim against him for professional negligence. Make sure you get answers to all you questions. If the seller won’t sign a contract, at the very least make notes of what you agree with the seller. Explain what you want to do with the horse and make sure the seller agrees that the horse is suitable. Ask if the seller is the true owner or only acting as agent: the law relating to agency is complex, but usually any claim will be against the true owner. Make sure that you check all the horse’s documentation, such as the passport and details of breeding – particularly if you are buying a horse from abroad. Finally, be rational about the whole process – it’s easy to fall in love with a horse, but you will quickly fall out of love if he isn’t as advertised. Remember that there are plenty of horses out there – you will soon find the ideal match.

It’s all about... modern thinking traditional values
Laura Powell writes...
The last four weeks have been non-stop. Firstly the little chestnut horse, Flint, who I’ve been riding for my other half is an absolute machine! Flint (Frankfort Clover Boy) whizzed round Munstead BE90 with a super double clear. Despite being a little green and wobbly out the start box he finished very positively. I was disappointed with his dressage score of 38, the arena was on a slight down hill slope and I obviously hadn’t practised my ‘dressage’ canter downhill enough. However, by the time we got to BCA a week later I am pleased to announce, after little bit of schooling in collected canter, we had rectified this blip earning us a much better 29.5 penalties. And after an easy clear show jumping he took me a little by surprise when he flew out the start box showing no greenness - eager to get on with the job. He was fantastic and ended up in fourth place and won a rug. Thank you to the very generous sponsors. I’m just disappointed that the season has now come to a close and he is for sale.
Stow away!
There was a stow away at BCA. Nessa (my homebred mare) came along for the ride. She had a very important lesson to learn stand on the lorry quietly, without making fuss and wait until it was her turn to have a little ride round the warm-up. She was very professional and well behaved and is no longer sweating on the lorry and is eager to join the others to go to the party! Nessa’s next ‘party’ was the local affiliated dressage at Eaglesfield Equestrian Centre. It can be a very spooky venue inside a big indoor arena complete with white boards and a big plastic judge’s box, which most horses take offence to the first time they go in there. However Nessa trotted round like she lives there and did me proud with a super test that I judged higher than the 64%
Laura and Frankfort Clover Boy finished fourth at BCA and won a rug. Picture by Ultimate Images
we received. Also on the lorry that day was Denzel - a big flashy grey six-year-old gelding who looked the part and performed very well coming third with 68%. He is also a super event prospect and has been jumping double clears round 1m classes with me. Over the next month it’s time for Whoopi to get fit and start going out to a few bits and pieces - the key with her is keeping her brain active enough as she’s just far too clever. While Nessa is doing a lot of grid work. Despite her flat work being fantastic she is somewhat slow with the jumping job. She’s as bold as a lion, but can’t quite get her legs to get out the way of the poles quickly enough. I’m hoping (and praying) this is just to do with the shear size of her and how weak she is at the moment. She should probably be turned away to grow (again, but judging by her self-harming problem I refuse to do it at the moment. She has been so quiet and easy since I broke her in, but I can’t deny that there are glimpses of Daisy (her dam) that are starting to come through. Like getting angry when we have to wait for more than one car out hacking and she’s now becoming a lot more forward and sensitive especially during our grid work. Yet more jumping and dressage shows are planned, and the time is nearing for the currently sound Alfie to come back in from the field and have some shoes on to start some work. Fingers crossed!! The RS-tor was designed as a safety aid to help prevent falls, or allow the rider to fall in a more controlled manner. The strap has a ‘bungee’ element that helps prevents rider falls by ‘absorbing’ the velocity of being unseated. It fits easily to the stirrup bars. The RS-tor’s fall prevention aspect comes into effect when the horse spooks, bucks, rears, cat-leaps or stumbles, although it’s confidence-boosting benefits are always experienced. www.rstor.co.uk

t was good to see a mixture of new and familiar combinations at the sunshine Tour Championships. Thirteen-year-old Leah robertson and her pony Dukeshill icon aka rocket were the clear winners of the supreme versatile Pony Championship. Leah’s family have owned the now 12-yearold rocket since he was a yearling and in the true sense of ‘versatile’, he and Leah do everything together. members of bisley & sandown Chase Pony Club, they have been on dressage teams as well as mounted games teams. Leah’s mother said; “he is a good allrounder and Leah has had a lot of fun with him.” reserve supreme went to the Family horse & Pony Champions, Leanne Jones and harry. Despite being only five-years-old the Friesian-thoroughbred cross is the perfect allrounder and family pony, who is ridden by all the family, mum, Kelly, who backed him, Leanne and her seven-year-old sister, reanie.

Get your coat!
or many horse owners, it is now time to start rugging. As a tack retailer, we obviously cater to horse owners that rug up, and have hundreds of rugs available. But that doesn’t mean we advocate over-rugging. In an ideal world, many owners would argue that it is not necessary to rug our horses. This ideal world would include suitable shelter (for example, large spacious field shelters with dry bedding, not just a hedge), that provides proper protection from the elements and is a safe haven for your horse. My ideal world scenario also includes ad lib hay, as this forage acts as an internal heating system to provide warmth via digestion; and turn out that encourages movement. If you ride your horse during the winter, you will of course run into problems with the no-rug scenario, as your horse will grow a thicker coat and may sweat when ridden, and may try to provide his own protective covering in the form of mud, that takes time to remove before you can then tack up. If however like most owners, you are planning to rug up this winter, you will know that modern rugs have a range of fantastic features, fastenings and fabrics: 1. Robust materials - look out for 1200d or higher ripstop outers to help prevent rips.
Most owners are planning 2. Quick release front clips or T bars to rug up this winter instead of buckles - saves time when fingers are cold. 3. Neck covers with a smooth lining to help prevent rubbing.
Detachable necks are versatile options to look out for
Top tips for rugging ● Rug when you need to, not just because you think you should! ● Don’t rug too early in the season if you can avoid it, as this can cause the coat not to develop enough, so you then need to rug more. ● Provide ad lib hay in sheltered areas. ● Use a progressive rugging system (light, then medium, then heavy) instead of going straight for the heavy. ● If you are rugging for cleanliness, e.g. to keep the horse clean so you can ride, go for the lightest weight that is suitable if you want to maintain a thicker coat. Conversely, if your horse is working hard and you need to clip, ensure you rug well enough to stop the clip growing out too quickly. ● Buy as good a rug as you can afford, as the better ones are cut to allow more freedom of movement, prevent rubbing and keep your horse warmer with less weight, and will ultimately last much longer if well cared for. ● Keep spares, have at least two rugs in case of mishaps or very heavy rain that requires the usual rug to have extra drying time. ● Look after your rugs and ensure hair and grease deposits are removed from the interior regularly to help prolong their life and prevent rubbing. ● Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions to keep the rugs waterproof.
4. Anti-rub lining at least at the shoulders, ideally throughout the rug, to help maintain the coat’s appearance and prevent any bald patches 5. Hi-vis binding options, for visibility on dark nights. 6. Wicking functionality in case the horse becomes hot when expending steam in the field! These are also useful if you need to rug up when the horse is still damp after exercise. 7. ‘Stainaway’ type coatings to reduce cleaning requirements. 8. Strong buckles and fastenings - stainless steel is popular. 9. Lining along the mane area, to help reduce rubbing. 10. Machine washable stable rugs to save on professional cleaning. 11. Extra deep sizes from wither to belly, for larger horses. 12. Bright and unusual colours and patterns, to help distinguish your own rugs and perhaps their individual weights, and also to distinguish your rugs from others at the yard. For more information about the range of rugs available from The Saddlery Shop, visit the website: www. thesaddleryshop.co.uk

Surviving Winter
Winter means shorter, colder days, less time to do everything and if you are very unlucky a few winter ailments, such as cuts and scrapes. Here we look at a few products which will help make your life easier this winter.
The Good Hood Made from a four way stretch lycra with bound elastic edges for a comfortable close fit. The fully adjustable belly and chest straps keeps the head and neck hood in place. It washes well and dries quickly. This special design has some unique features for comfort and safety. There are two wide noseband openings to make the hood easier to pass over the face. The bottom noseband passes over the top of nose and the top noseband then passes between the ears and eyes and slips over the nose, covering the bottom noseband piece. The two nosebands are then fastened together under the jaw with the small velcro strap. This keeps the whole head piece in place and away from the eyes. Colours: Navy & Navy/Orange. Sizes: Small – XLarge
A wonderful Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Fungal product to help protect vulnerable areas. Loosens scabs naturally and helps to soothe weakened, pink, scabby areas. Use regularly as a barrier.

**GOOD HOOD** WITH UNIQUE SAFETY FEATURES 4 way comfy stretch lycra. Wider face opening, less intimidating for the horse. Self righting, centralized nose pieces, keeps hood away from eyes.

Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream Barrier Animal Healthcare design, manufacture and market a wide range of 100% natural, effective products at affordable prices. Use Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream regularly as a barrier against water and to protect vulnerable areas from sharp grit, mud and dirt. Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream contains ingredients that are known to possess anti-bacterial, antifungal and soothing properties to help protect and soothe sore cracked areas. Scabs soften gently allowing them to fall away naturally. It also helps restore the correct moisture balance without impairing the natural skin function, keeping the skin supple and in peak condition. www.flyrepel.com
Essential Hay Bar Using a HayBar has a number of benefits. It replaces the need to fill haynets, which are both fiddly and time consuming and if your horse is messy in the stable, usually mixing his hay into his bedding, then it will also make mucking out easier as the hay is contained within the HayBar, thus wasting less too. The Hay Bar also encourages horse to feed the natural way. It slows down their intake and keeps the airways and sinuses draining down. Feeding from the floor helps to ensure that their teeth are evenly worn and that they are using the correct back and neck muscles as they feed in the grazing position. Hay Bar is now widely used in top competition, livery and veterinary yards where it is recognised as the correct and most efficient way of feeding. It is available for horses and ponies in the traditional black and in posh pink for children’s ponies. The initial outlay can be soon recouped by the saving in wasted forage and bedding.
“We quickly converted the whole yard. Hay Bars can also contribute to improvements with back problems of which we see so many cases.” Carrie Humble MBE, Founder & Director The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre “Hay Bar is ideal for horses with a respiratory problem. It encourages drainage of the respiratory tract also preventing contamination seen when feeding from the floor.” Philip Dixon B.V.Sc. Cert. E.P. M.R.C.V.S

Winter First Aid Focus...
Applying a foot poultice
with Robinson Animal Healthcare
Whilst horses may not be as active in the winter, the onset of cold weather brings with it a new set of ailments and injury risks. It is vital that first aid kits are well stocked and the products in them are geared towards treating winter ailments and injuries that are more likely to occur as the temperatures drop and horses are faced with adverse weather conditions.
F
or most horses, winter will mean spending more time indoors. This may increase the occurrence of bursal injuries (e.g. capped elbow) and bursal strains (e.g. windgalls) as horses spend more time laying down and are also less mobile, allowing fluid to accumulate. Cold therapy is commonly used in the treatment of inflammation and such soft tissue injuries, ideally used immediately after an injury occurs and then subsequently for the next 48 hours at regular intervals. Due to the frequent nature of its use, cold therapy involving water may lead to cracked heels or other skin problems, especially in the Koolpak winter. Also if hosepipes are frozen then it is vital you have an immediate dry cold therapy available, for example Koolpak® from Robinson Animal Healthcare. Koolpak® is ideal for emergency and routine use as it requires no refrigeration. Suitable for providing fast, effective help for tendon injuries, inflammation, knocks, strains, bruises and swellings.
including thrush and foot abscesses. Animalintex® Hoof Treatment from Robinson Animal Healthcare is cut to shape for economy and convenience. Suitable for the rapid treatment of foot conditions it is the only veterinary licensed poultice on the market for equine treatment. It contains an antiseptic to clean and prevent re-infection and natural poulticing agent, Tragacanth, which, when it reacts with water, draws out any infection and creates a clean area for the wound to heal. Animalintex® and Animalintex® Hoof Treatment can be applied dry or as a hot or cold, wet poultice. Make sure first aid kits also contain items for treating wounds such as dressings, wound gel and bandages. Storage is important in winter to prevent any items in first aid kits, such as liquids or sprays, from freezing. Most first aid items should be stored at normal room temperature but always check the packaging. Robinson Animal Healthcare has a wide range of products for all first aid and wound care requirements. For more information contact Robinson Animal Healthcare on 01909 735000 or visit www.robinsonhealthcare.com. You can also find Robinson
Mud Fever & Rain Scald
Mud fever and rain scald are not uncommon in winter and should be correctly identified before treatment. Anti-bacterial washes can be used prophylactically on susceptible animals or to treat existing skin conditions caused by bacterium. They will help to remove any encrusted debris such as scabs. Removing scabs carefully using an antibacterial cleansing wash (if bacterium is the causative organism) will remove any existing bacteria and dirt held in the scabs, allowing new clean scabs to form and heal. It is very important that any sponges that are used in the washing Activ Wash process are clean and that the area washed is rinsed well with clean water and then dried thoroughly. Activ Wash® can be used to clean mud fever and rain scald, and after washing it is advisable to bandage with Veterinary Gamgee to absorb any excess moisture and keep legs warm and dry.
Be prepared
It is also a good idea to stock up on Animalintex® for the winter months as it can be used to treat numerous injuries and ailments, november 2014 Localrider 69

Feed news and Fibre-beet contain rapidly fermentable fibre. Their “slow-release” energy is more complete than that from forage, and the sugar beet component actually improves the fermentability of other fibres through manipulation of the microbial populations. by increasing the proportion of Speedi-beet or Fibre-beet of the fibre faction, there will be an increase in heat generated in the hindgut, as well as providing more energy for metabolism. Soak them in hot water. It’s quicker to prepare and will also help maintain inner temperature. Whilst discussing water, try if possible, to avoid giving cold water during the winter months. Warm water will help keep the body temperature away from the critical temperature, cold water will bring it closer. The horse will tend to drink less anyway, increasing the risk of compaction. by over-soaking the Speedi-beet or Fibrebeet, you will help to maintain water intake. by following these adjustments in daily feeding the horse is much more likely to be able to cope with lower ambient temperatures.
Microbial fermentation in the horse’s hindgut generates heat, and warms the deep body areas from the inside out

Winter Feeding It is time to start preparing for winter and here Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds shares his thoughts on winter feeding.
W
inter brings with it, shorter days and colder weather, which can result in horses having less hours of turnout and grazing as well as in some cases, depending on facilities, such as indoor schools, reduced hours of exercise. The drop in temperature will lead to the horse losing body heat. In order to generate more heat to maintain its body temperature the horse needs to ingest more energy in the form of food.
Effective Critical Temperature Warm-blooded animals have what is known as a Zone of Thermoneutrality. This is a range within which the animal can compensate by metabolic means. outside this range the animal takes behavioural steps to compensate. If it gets too hot a horse will try to find shade, reduce its activity and sweat: if too cold it will shiver to generate heat from muscular activity. This lower temperature is known as effective Critical Temperature and is 7°C, wind chill and wet conditions can affect the eCT. It has been recommended that for
every 1°C drop an extra 2mJ of digestible energy should be provided. In a natural situation, horses will moderate their behaviour, as well as making physiological changes, such as growing a thicker coat, to combat the onset and duration of winter. Unfortunately for the domestic animal this is not always possible and so we have to help out. The first and most obvious task is to make sure the horse does not get too cold. If the environment does not reach 7°C, then the chance of the horse’s core temperature dropping is removed, and supplemental feeding will be less necessary. by stabling, or using a good quality rug the animal is buffered, on the outside, from drops in temperature, wind chill and wet – all cumulative factors in changing the critical temperature.
There will be days when the temperatures are very low and stabling, rugs and extra fermentable fibre will not keep the body temperature much above eCT, and your feeding regime will need a little help. This is where concentrates come in. If your horse is shivering it’s a sign to increase his hard feed. Using a proprietary brand, such as baileys no.4 Top Line Conditioning cubes, with micronized cereals for faster and more effective absorption, balanced amino acids (maintaining musculature and replacing protein lost to catabolism), a beneficial fibre profile, and essential vitamins and trace elements will ensure that metabolism is compensated. In addition a high oil product like baileys outshine will add a little physical insulation. Feeding a super fibre will offset reduced intake and higher maintenance requirements and amounts can be easily changed to match the change in day length and environment. For more information on Fibre-Beet or Speedi-Beet please contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds. com. You can also join British Horse Feeds on Facebook.

Feed news
What to feed this winter Some horses are good doers, others lose weight as soon as the temperature drops, here we look at a range of products suitable to feed this winter.
HorseHage & Mollichaff HorseHage dust-free bagged forage can offer an alternative to traditional hay or haylage this winter. It is more digestible than other forages, allowing more efficient utilisation of the available nutrients. There are four different varieties – Ryegrass, High Fibre, Timothy and Alfalfa – offering a choice for all types of horses and ponies including laminitics. HorseHage is packed into double-skinned, highly compressed bales and as long as it is unopened, it will last for up to 18 months and can be stored outside. Once a bag is opened, it should be consumed within a week. Another option is to feed a partial hay replacer such as Mollichaff Veteran. Although formulated for elderly horses and ponies that cannot consume long forage, Mollichaff Veteran is a high fibre forage mix that can be used to partially replace the forage ration where necessary. It contains a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a very light, low sugar coating, plus added vitamins, minerals, plant-based antioxidants, mint, nettle, salt and biotin. It is very palatable and so is ideal for fussy feeders too. www.horsehage.co.uk
British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet A Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and very palatable for fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. FibreBeet can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
Rowen Barbary Solution Mash For horses that are prone to laminitis it is important to try to avoid using cereals in the diet, but where fibre alone is not sufficient to meet the energy requirements especially in poor doers oil should be included providing a much safer alternative than the more traditional cereal based feeds. With a very high oil content, but with no cereals and with a very low starch and sugar level Solution Mash has been specifically designed for horses that need a higher calorie diet for conditioning and controlled weight gain, whilst being ideal for horses that suffer from laminitis. Being very high in fibre this helps to encourage slow rates of digestion throughout the hindgut, with added Yeasacc 1026 helping support optimum fibre and mineral digestion. Natural herbs spearmint, garlic and fenugreek are included along with all the essential nutrients required for a fully balanced diet. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk
Easy Pack Haylage Easy Pack Haylage and Bedding is dedicated to the production of high quality products providing your horse with essential nutrition and a healthy stable environment, whilst saving you valuable time and money. The grasses in Easy Pack Haylage have been specially selected and cultivated to provide high quality products to suit your horse’s individual needs. The three varieties available allow you to choose a product that meets your horse’s health and energy requirements. Easy Pack Haylage and Bedding produces a choice of three high quality beddings for your horse; Chopped Straw, Chopped Miscanthus and Premium. All are tightly packed into manageable bales. www.easypackhaylage.com
TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer Keep your veteran in tip top condition with TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer – now available in 15kg bags. TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘non-heating’ feed that contains several supplements including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. This superb specification allows elderly horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which often means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. Using TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and also promote muscle development and topline, which often starts to decline as horses’ age. Feeding it will help to maintain good hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. www.topspec.com
Blue Chip Garliq
Baileys Fibre Plus Nuggets are a unique chunky alternative to hay and can be fed alongside the existing compound and forage ration to help add variety and eke out valuable winter hay stocks. Ideal fed from the ground, Fibre Plus Nuggets can also be fed in a “boredom ball” and so help encourage natural foraging behaviour in the stabled horse. Their combination of essential oils makes them highly palatable as well as helping encourage healthy gut function. For those who are looking for a high fibre, low energy compound feed, Baileys High Fibre Complete nuggets offer the same benefits as Fibre Plus, with the addition of a full balance of vitamins and minerals. Both can be easily softened in water for the older equine.
In equine diets garlic is used for a variety of reasons, but probably its most commonly known use is as a fly repellent. Flies and midges are repelled by the odour from horses that have been fed garlic. Garlic contains a wide range of minerals including selenium and sulphur. Sulphur has blood cleansing properties and selenium is a powerful anti-oxidant and garlic supports the respiratory system with its anti-oxidant properties. Garlic aids digestive health and contains a natural source of MSM (commonly found in joint supplements). Garlic is one of the most commonly fed supplements in the equine industry; however it is widely available only as a powder or granule. Blue Chip Garliq is a liquid form of this powerful natural supplement, enabling it to be absorbed into the bloodstream faster and more efficiently. It also means less mess and less waste when feeding and horses love the taste. Blue Chip Garliq is made from a superior form of concentrated, pure garlic oil. Garliq can be fed all year round to aid and support your horse’s health.

FEED NEWS Blue Chip Feed Balancers
KM Elite Ultimate Oil
Horses have evolved to eat a mainly fibre diet, however a diet solely of grass is not always possible in winter and is often lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this is why the diet needs to be supplemented with hay or haylage. Grass also contains natural antioxidants which will be depleted in winter. Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the Blue Chip range will ensure that your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet, and because all the Blue Chip balancers are nutrient dense they are fed in small quantities. Blue Chip balancers are wholecereal and molasses free and include a fruit derived form of vitamin E, which is a powerful natural antioxidant. Horses can use up to 80% of their feed energy keeping warm; fibre is the most ‘warming’ feed, as more heat is produced during digestion of fibre than any other nutrient. All of the Blue Chip balancers contain a probiotic yeast which can double the digestibility of fibre in the diet, meaning that they will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ out of their hay or haylage. www.bluechipfeed.com
Alltech Lifeforce Range Selenium is an important trace mineral, not just because of the number of significant roles it plays in relation to equine health but because horses intake will vary according to your location. As well as aiding muscle function, this mineral affects immune status, fertility, growth and the body’s ability to repair itself. It also has a positive influence on heart function. Horses obtain selenium from their diet but the mineral level in the soil affects its content in feed and forage, meaning many horses are not receiving adequate levels. The Lifeforce Range of supplements from Alltech contains Sel-Plex, Alltech’s own selenium yeast. Sel-Plex is the first EU approved form of organic selenium providing a safe and effective form of selenium for equine diets. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
Equine America Coff-Less Powder Equine America Coff-Less Powder aids upper and lower respiratory health. Coff-Less Powder soothes the airways, promoting clear healthy lungs, whilst providing support to the immune system. CoffLess can be used in the short term to support respiratory health, this can then be maintained using Airways Xtra Strength Powder. Coff-Less is specially formulated using herbs and natural ingredients including Fenugreek Seed Powder, Kelp Meal, Garlic Powder, Gentian and Mullein Extract for healthy clear lungs and healthy respiratory system. Coff-Less also contains Glycerine and Aloe Vera to soothe and lubricate the throat, Oil of Eucalyptus to clear the airway, and Echinacea to support the immune system. www.equine-america.co.uk
KM Elite Aloe Vera Juice This high quality juice offers an all-round boost to the immune system and overall wellbeing. It can also work as a tonic for older or run down horses, which are recovering from injury. The juice is made from the highest grade organic inner leaf of the Aloe Vera Plant. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk
Ultimate Oil is the next generation in oil supplementation. Ultimate Oil is a blend of high quality oils providing more than 190 bioactive nutrients, including healthy ratios of Omegas 3, 6, 9 and rare Omega 7 - nourishing the body with essential fatty acids, minerals, plant sterols, antioxidants, amino acids and vitamins including Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, B15, C, E, K. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk
TopSpec TopChop Grass TopChop Grass is a blend of specially selected, dried, British grasses. It is ideal for horses and ponies needing a soft, very palatable chop, perfect for fussy feeders including fit performance horses and elderly horses. The formula for TopChop Grass was tested and developed at the Middle Park Equine Research Unit and has been approved by the nutritional team as suitable for all horses and ponies other than those prone to laminitis and those that need to lose weight. TopChop Grass is a high quality chop that can be fed solely with a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement. Additional feed, for example a TopSpec Blend, can be added if extra nutrients for work or condition are required. It can be used as a hay replacer, especially for elderly horses struggling to maintain condition as a result of poor dentition reducing their ability to chew hay or haylage TopChop Grass is dust-extracted and the grass has been high-temperature dried. These two procedures minimise potential mould, making the chop suitable for horses and ponies with respiratory problems. Always dampen feed if your horse or pony has respiratory problems. www.topspec.com

SiMPLEFEEDER are pleased to announce their new UK agent is Lawrence Grose of Equestrian Products. Lawrence has many years’ experience of working for one of the largest stable manufacturers in the UK and fully understands the issues associated with fabrication quality of finish and value for money. SiMPLEFEEDER is an exceptional aid to improving your horse’s welfare through frequent feeding. It automatically dispenses what you want when you want it and the unit can be easily mounted on external walls or bars. The concept behind SiMPLEFEEDER is to provide each horse a feeding regime, which would replicate as close as possible its natural feeding environment. The horse has a greater number of daily feed times, each containing a smaller quantity of feed, than previously fed. This enables trainers, breeders and owners to more closely mimic a horse’s natural grazing behaviour, allowing owners to tend to their horses as and when they require – saving time and money. Discover more about SiMPLEFEEDER and the benefits it can have for your horse at www.simplefeeder.com or www.equestrianproducts.co.uk To enter complete the coupon on page 58. The winner will be the first entrant drawn after the closing date of 30th November 2014. This competition will also be running on our website www.localrider.co.uk

If they were all the same, we’d only make one rug.
Got a Rug Houdini? A Rug Wrecker? Or a Rug Friendly? We’ve spent the last 35 years working with horses and understand they can behave differently when they’re in their rugs. This is why we make different ones to suit different personalities. Our turnouts are made of waterproof, durable, breathable materials each featuring taped seams and a minimum of 1200 denier so your horse gets the protection he deserves.
