Welcome

appy New Year! I know it is a bit late, but as the December issue is combined with January, it is the first opportunity I have had to say it. Although we are regularly in contact with some of you through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which I find is a great way to stay in touch in between issues. Some of you have been sharing your own personal equestrian goals for the season ahead with us on social media and we look forward to following your progress over the coming months and hopefully featuring some of you too. As always, the time has flown by, one minute I was writing the final pages of the Christmas issue and now we are just a few weeks away from the start of the outdoor season. I am counting down the days until I can start reporting from the spring shows and events, but I think we have the worst of the winter to cope with first. If you feel in need of some retail therapy and are looking for something new and warm, turn to page 12 to see what we have been reviewing this winter.

Celebrations There is so much to celebrate in this issue. Turning to our Olympia report on page 8, we celebrate Carl Hester and Scott Brash both winning FEI World Cup qualifiers, but of course it wouldn’t be Olympia without Valegro and we have included some of our favourite pictures of this wonderful horse. I am not a dressage judge, but if I was, I would have to say I thought Valegro’s performance of his London 2012 Olympic Gold medal winning freestyle was even more sensational this time than it was in London 2012. It was also exciting to watch the younger local riders competing at Olympia, in both the Shetland Grand National and the Pony Club Mini Major competition.

Veterans

56

Our celebrations continue with your wonderful veterans, 42 of them across 14 pages and that’s just Part I, we have Part II next issue. I have loved reading each and every one of their stories and I hope you do too. Turn to page 27 to find out more. Our final celebration is for Christmas Shows, fancy Dress and the London New Year’s Day Parade. This issue would be a lot less colourful if it wasn’t for all those wonderful costumes that both horses and their riders wear during the festive season. Even the Coakham Bloodhounds had a fancy dress theme at their Christmas Eve Meet. Turn to page 42 to see some of their great pictures. Looking ahead to the March issue, we will be producing a Show Dates Guide for the season ahead along with an additional guide detailing Where to Go Cross-Country Schooling. If you are organising a show or event and need to promote it, remember to contact the office in good time to let us know. Have fun! SHOWING • PONY CLUB • ENDURANCE

So much happening at Wildwoods

JHL Heart & Diamante Browbands

L

ast year Wildwoods, which is based at Walton-on-the-Hill, celebrated its 40th anniversary. The Towill family moved there in 1971 when their daughter Anthea was still at school. There was nothing there apart from some weed infested paddocks and loopy barbed wire fencing. Today it is a BHS Approved Where to Train & Examination Centre, is approved by the Association of British Riding Schools and holds an Accredibilty Mark, an affiliation to Riding for Disabled. There is so much happening at Wildwoods, alongside the traditional riding and training the centre welcomes autistic children, which can at times be challenging, but also rewarding. Riding can actually promote learning and a feeling of well-being. Wildwoods is home to another kind of horse, Trojan, their Racewood Dressage Simulator, very popular with riders of all levels, it is also an option for those not confident enough to sit on the real thing. It is also possible to go Mrs Towill for a drive in a carriage with and Anthea Bernie and his Norwegian with Magic Fjord, Duke. Wildwoods also offers instruction in Western Riding and side saddle and has recently added Skill at Arms to the programme for those who want to have a go at tent-pegging! This has been enjoyed by some of the centre’s 40 Pony Club members, who meet on Saturday afternoons for riding lessons. In addition to working towards their Pony Club Achievement badges, which include a wide range of topics, not only horse care. www.wildwoodsriding.co.uk

Optimising Cross Country Performance

As part of Gastric Health month Lingfield Equine Vets have teamed up with Gastro Guard supplier Merial and International Event rider and BE approved Master Coach Nick Gauntlett FBHS, for an evening presentation and discussion. Nick has recently been awarded Fellowship of The Bristish Horse Society, rated as one of the highest coaching accreditations in the world. He will offer an exciting insight to his world as a rider and coach and share stories of some exhilarating cross country experiences. Juliette Nick Gauntlett representing Merial FBHS will focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers often associated with poor performance plus common cross country injuries from LEV partner Kate Granshaw.

Always keep your horse insurance details to hand says BEVA Keeping a copy of your horse’s insurance certificate to hand can help you to make informed decisions in the event of your horse needing veterinary treatment, and your vet can quickly check the extent of your veterinary cover, even in the middle of the night, advises the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA). A serious accident or a severe bout of colic may require expensive emergency surgery and it is important to be able to make swift decisions on how best to proceed and to notify your insurance company accordingly. www.beva.org.uk

NEWS Love the SKIN He’s in Love the SKIN He’s in Mud Gard Supplement provides nutritional support for skin challenged by wet, muddy conditions. When exposed to wet muddy conditions, some horses can be affected by soil dwelling bacteria that gain access into the skin when weakened by the external conditions. By improving the diet it is possible to help the horse to strengthen his skin from the inside out. Mud Gard contains a unique complex of scientifically verified, naturally sourced antioxidants to flush excess free radicals away from the areas affected by the ravages of the mud. It also contains key herbs and other nutrients, including MSM, to support strong healthy skin from within. For optimum nutritional support improve the diet with Mud Gard prior to the onset of wet, muddy conditions to allow the key nutrients to assimilate in the system.

OLYMPIA REPORT Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro wowed the crowds with their London 2012 Gold medal winning freestyle test.

Carl Hester and Nip Tuck won the FEI World Cup Dressage Freestyle to Music, pictured here with Alan Davies.

he second day at Olympia, The London International Horse Show could not have ended any more perfectly than with British Dressage’s own Superman, Carl Hester winning the FEI World Cup Dressage Grand Prix Freestyle supported by Horse & Hound. The win with Nip Tuck, Hester’s second consecutive Olympia FEI World Cup qualifying win with his 18 hand high 2016 Olympic team silver partner, came during an emotionally charged evening performance that saw the retirement of Nip Tuck’s stable and Olympic team mate Valegro. The double Olympic gold medallist is part-owned by Hester and ridden by his pupil and former protégé Charlotte Dujardin. Hester and Nip Tuck’s freestyle (84.669) delighted the capacity crowd many of who have come back to Olympia every year since the prestigious FEI World Cup qualifier was initiated here in 2003. “That was the biggest atmosphere at Olympia that I have ever experienced,” said Hester, who is now aiming for the FEI World Cup Final in Omaha in April. “Even yesterday in the Grand Prix it was super-charged and not just because of the numbers. Barney was a

little on edge but I was really pleased that even out there, with so many people, he kept with me.” Hester was also a major part of the evening’s retirement ceremony for Valegro. “It has been such a joyous occasion,” said Hester. “I know everyone thought it would be sad, but how could anyone be sad to see Valegro go out so fit and well and happy – it’s been a happy sad day.” Hester and Nip Tuck not only successfully defended their Olympia title, but comfortably held off the potential challenge from Dutch Olympic riders Hans Peter Minderhoud with Glock’s Flirt (81.880) and Edward Gal with Glock’s Voice (80.467). The two Dutch riders, as last night in the Grand Prix, took second and third place. Hans Peter Minderhoud, the current holder of the FEI World Cup title took the runner up position with Glock’s Flirt with who he won the title last year – his first FEI World Cup accolade. “I expected a great class with a big atmosphere so I knew we would have to produce our very best and then I heard Carl’s score,” said Minderhoud.

(Valegro says his final farewells to the crowd) But there is always time for a kiss with his favourite girl

Thank you Valegro Three-time Olympic Champions Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro entered the Olympia Grand Hall for a final time, performing their London 2012 Gold medal winning freestyle test to a sell-out crowd in a touching retirement ceremony. In 2014 the pair set the Freestyle Dressage world record at Olympia, and currently hold the highest Olympic score in the Freestyle. Valegro and Charlotte were joined in the arena by mentor and part-owner, Carl Hester, as well as groom Alan Davies, in what was an emotional last dance. The packed-out stands gave the duo a well-deserved standing ovation as they paraded out of the arena. Speaking after the ceremony, Charlotte Dujardin said, “There have been so many happy memories, he’s won every gold medal there is, including three Olympic golds and two FEI World Cup titles. He’s a once in a lifetime horse and I’ll miss competing with him enormously.”

OLYMPIA REPORT World Cup Sunday

Ben Maher and Diva II, second Longines FEI World Cup qualifier

The packed house was thrilled by Scott Brash (GBR) and his ride, Hello M’Lady, as their performance in the Longines FEI World Cup qualifier presented by H&M, led them to snatch the victory. The celebrations were heightened as Ben Maher, the last Brit to win the class back in 2011, finished in second place, on another mare, Diva ll, by just 0.12 of a second. “It’s great to perform in front of a home crowd,” said Scott after his victory. “The atmosphere was amazing the crowd really got behind us.” Thirteen riders from eight nations went through to Kelvin Bywater’s ingenious jump-off track which hinged on getting the sharp angle back to a double on a blind turn and then clearing the upright fence on a curving galloping line. “Kelvin [Bywater, course-designer] did a great job,” commented Scott. “It was big and technical but, nowadays, the standard is so high that there are horses that will just skip round.” Of Lady Kirkham’s agile nine-year-old mare, Scott commented: “She’s sharp, an exceptional jumper and very much one for the future. It was very special to win in front of a home crowd.” Ben Maher, the first rider to go clear in the jump-off, could perhaps consider himself hard done by, having set such an exacting standard, but his mare was returning to form and he said simply: “I would have been happy with sixth, quite honestly. Diva loves this show and jumped brilliantly; it’s just great to have her back. Congratulations to Scott – I couldn’t have done any more.”

Danielle from Horsham competed all round the country last year with the aim of qualifying for the final at Olympia. She also raised over £1,500 for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust.

Harriet Birkby representing the Southdown Hunt West Pony Club paired up with Lorenzo De Luca in the Pony Club Mini Major competition, finishing in second place.

Tatiane Mauree from the Vine Hunt finished fourth, Charlotte Page from Tickham Hunt was seventh and Zoe Webber from South Berks Pony Club finished eighth.

Keeping tried&tested

WARM

this Winter This month we have been testing clothes to keep both you and your horse warm this winter…

Chatham Blenheim Boots The Chatham Equestrian range features premium leathers and sturdy rubber soles. Included in the range is the Blenheim, a high leg riding boot made with super soft full synthetic wool lining. With three side straps for an expandable calf, the boot offers ultimate support. All set on a useful rubber sole, the pull-on tab and padded in-sock combine comfort and longevity. RRP: £120 www.chatham.co.uk LR Comment: Lined with synthetic wool these boots are extremely warm. They are easy to put on and take off, as the side straps can be undone to make it easier. Once done up I didn’t notice any difference in the fit compared to normal pull on boots. I would definitely recommend these boots for wearing in the cold weather.

Baleno Paris Padded Coat This sophisticated panel quilted Paris coat is lined with 3M Thinsulate featherless insulation to provide warmth and comfort. The lavishly appointed faux fur collar is removable. This coat will make a stylish addition to any wardrobe. Colour: Navy, Champagne Sizes: XS – XXL RRP: £179.95 www.baleno.be LR Comment: This was the first time I had tested the Baleno brand and I have to say the Paris padded coat is outstanding. It fitted perfectly and despite the bulk being padded, it looked very stylish and extremely well cut. I have had a number of padded coats, but the Paris is probably one of the warmest I have tested. Because of the technology in the padding, it only warms up to the temperature you need it. A stunning coat, which is perfect for teaching, going to events and casual wear.

Horseware Rhino Plus Turnout 400g The Rhino Plus has a 1000D polypropylene outer, which protects the waterproof and breathable layer underneath. Polypropylene is a stronger alternative to polyester which is the most widely used turnout material. There is a shine enhancing polyester lining with thermobonded fibrefill for longer lasting heat retention. Features include front leg arches and cross surcingles as standard. It was extremely warm and perfect for the colder weather that arrived after Christmas. It fitted well and despite the warmth provided was light and easy to put on and take off. It has a detachable neck, giving it that added versatility, especially if you like to turn your horse out without a neck cover on dry crisp days.

Winter Wardrobe Essentials Winter is still very much here and as any avid horse lover knows, being around our beloved four-legged friends is not for the fainthearted during the colder months of the year. With predictably less hours available for riding and more time invested in ensuring your horse retains its condition, keeping yourself comfortable warm and dry whilst enduring the challenging weather becomes an absolute priority. Lifestyle clothing brand Baleno have some good advice on how to keep warm and dry this winter...

Weather-wise rain wear

your wardrobe staples should always include a good quality breathable waterproof jacket or coat. and by waterproof, we genuinely mean waterproof, not just showerproof. Don’t be tempted to buy a cheaper showerproof jacket to save money, this type of outerwear will only keep you dry on a temporary basis and in really heavy rain conditions, will struggle to offer any protection for longer than the time it takes to open an umbrella. baleno’s waterproof jackets feature technically advanced fabric to prevent your body from coming into contact with any water whilst still allowing body heat and perspiration to escape via a ‘breathable’ membrane. Without the existence of this layer, you may start off feeling dry but once you start working up a sweat on the yard you are likely to feel uncomfortable and damp. reputable brands like baleno formally test a jacket’s breathability by measuring the rate at which water vapour passes through over a 24-hour period. being comfortable is not just about staying dry and warm. The actual design of the jacket needs to allow for easy movement, so a generous cut and the inclusion of vents is essential if you intend to use the same coat for riding and working on the yard. Go for a longer ¾ length coat like baleno’s Kensington for optimum protection, which works wonders as a ‘cover all’ if you need to pop out to feed/muck out, but don’t want to have to get totally changed. ensuring that the jacket/coat features an adjustable hood to deliver top to toe protection.

Create your own ate by micro-climate he fleece zipping the cket into the jacket

Layer on the warmth

The key to keeping warm is applying layers so it pays to select a jacket which features an interchangeable lining system like the one baleno offers. This provides an extra layer of warmth via a cosy fleece during the winter but as the weather improves, can also be worn as a stand-alone fleece jacket or gilet, depending on whether you select a sleeved or sleeve less lining.

Ear protection

When the wind is blowing and the air around you is freezing cold, nothing quite beats a snug fitting headband to keep the chill away from your ears and the hair out of your eyes. Headbands such as baleno’s elasticated Sherpa fleece headbands are perfect for the job and look great too. For more information on Baleno’s country winter wardrobe solutions visit www.baleno.be

Introducing SB Bits Common signs of equine mouth sensitivity

Finding the right bit opens up a world of fun with your horse

U

ckfield-based bitting specialist Stephen Biddlecombe has launched an eponymous brand called ‘SB Bits’, to help customers find the right bit for their equine. “Our flagship brands are Dutch company Trust Equestrian Bits, and Bombers Equestrian Equipment, from South Africa. I have a particular interest in finding solutions for horses and ponies that have sensitive mouths, as once you have solved the bitting issue, these equines can be turned around completely from appearing uncooperative and even unrideable, to becoming more ‘through’ in their bodies, more trainable and generally relaxed,” Stephen explains.

A Trust issue

Trust Bits include dozens of different cheek and mouthpiece bit options in sweet iron, leather and plastic ‘Inno Sense’ materials. If you’re not familiar with leather as a bitting mouthpiece, it is used because some sensitive-mouthed horses like it. The core of the bit is made of flexible, reinforced nylon and then a leather covering is stitched around this core. The horse’s saliva production softens the leather bit for a comfortable, The Trust Leather Pelham is soft feel. My favourite from a lovely straight bar bit the range is the Trust Leather Pelham - it is a straight bar bit with cross-stitching on the reverse, and a choice of 45mm or 65mm shank length. (The bit size comes in 125mm, 135mm and 145mm). It works well for horses that dislike the feel of metal in their mouths.

Mullen marvels

The Inno Sense bits come in several mouthpiece types, however I really rate the mullen mouthpieces. They are essentially a straight bar without any joints or ports, but with a slight curve. The Inno Sense bits boast a flexible mouthpiece that is extremely The Inno Sense bits are made from plastic gentle to the crafted over a stainless steel interior core horse’s mouth and tongue. The plastic is crafted over a stainless steel interior core, making them reliable and safe. The range is available with different cheekpieces such as eggbutt, full cheek (fulmer) snaffle, and pelham. There’s even a hackamore version.

Sensitive equine mouths often equate to sensitive tongues. In my experience, when pressure is applied to a horse with a sensitive tongue, its response will be one or more of the following: shaking its head; sticking its tongue out; sucking its tongue back (perhaps making an intermittent coughing noise); or trying to put its tongue over the bit. I am a big fan of the Bombers Happy Tongue range for such issues - these have a curved, ported mouthpiece to give tongue relief. They often help a sensitive horse The Eggbutt Loose Ring has a curved, accept the ported mouthpiece for tongue relief rider’s contact. The Eggbutt Loose Ring is pictured. If a horse objects to pinching of the tongue and bar pressure, it will poke its nose up and out. A bit that reduces tongue and bar pressure will help the horse bring its head down and in. The Bombers control plate mouthpiece is a good example - the middle section of the mouthpiece is set at 45°, to follow the contour of the horse’s tongue. A further group of sensitive mouthed horses is those that object to continuous pressure; they will exhibit one or more of the following traits: pulling the head down; pulling the reins out of the rider’s hands; or tucking the head against the chest and getting behind the bit. For such issues, I like the Buster Roller mouthpiece, which comes in several cheepiece options - the bit has a link in the middle that’s shortened to 40mm, increasing bar and tongue pressure and lifting the head.

SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth

Brilliant Bombers

I introduced Bombers Equestrian Equipment bits to the UK market, and am delighted to see that they are now a widely-used and very popular range, with mouthpiece sizes from 125mm to 150mm ‘off the shelf’. I can also offer a bespoke service, whereby owners chose a Bombers mouthpiece, cheekpiece and size, and we can order a handmade, custom bit to be delivered within two months. Bombers Bits are all made of sweet iron, as it oxidises easily, encourages salivation, helps bit acceptance and offers a warm and sweet feeling.

Christmas came early for Crawley and Horsham Pony Club member Briony Martin, when long-term equestrian sponsor Land Rover gave her a riding lesson with Olympic gold medal-winning show jumper Ben Maher. Briony, 11, from Bonley and her pony, Ciderbug, won the individual show jumping title at the Land Rover Pony Club South East Regional Championships in August. As part of her prize, title sponsors Land Rover arranged for her to have a show jumping lesson with the London 2012 Olympic Gold medallist at his training base. After the lesson, Briony said: “I have had the most fantastic afternoon at Ben Maher’s yard, since a young child I have watched Ben compete at Hickstead and Olympia, so to actually meet him and have a lesson with him, is just an amazing experience and one that I will always treasure.” The Land Rover Pony Club Regional Championships is aimed at grassroots riders with the intention of introducing new talent into a competitive structure. In its inaugural year, there were five championships events across the UK in the summer school holidays. Each individual winner was offered the opportunity to have a lesson from Land Rover ambassador Ben Maher. Ben, who competed for Team GB at Rio 2016, said: “The Land Rover Pony Club Regional Championships is a brilliant initiative that gives young riders a chance to experience a competition environment for the first time. It’s a great prize that Land Rover has arranged for the winning riders. I hope Briony learnt something today and essentially had some fun at the same time.”

Product Watch

February always feels like the coldest and often muddiest month of the year. With that in mind we have selected a couple of products we think you might find useful this month. First, we look at RenaSan’s First Aid Spray, which can be used in the prevention of mud fever and thrush. Then we feature vitamunch, a handy hay block, packed full of vitamins and minerals, which can be fed in both the stable and field to help relieve boredom. We know your horse will love you for it!

RenaSan’s EASY 1, 2, 3 Mud Fever and Thrush Prevention Routine RenaSan can be easily used to deal with bacteria infection like mud fever or thrush. Simply spray onto the infected area and leave to dry naturally. We all know that prevention is always better than cure, but when it comes to mud fever or thrush it doesn’t have to become a chore. With a simple 1, 2, 3 process you can add this into your winter routine, save time and keep your hands from getting cold from endless washing. Make it easy with the use of RenaSan, a natural, yet clinically proven biocide hypochlorous spray. 1. When you bring your horse in from the field or you’re back from a hack simply wash off their legs, ideally from the knee down, make sure to remove all mud, dirt and grim. 2. A quick towel dry removes excess water 3. Then, simply spray on RenaSan the hypochlorous antiseptic first aid spray. Be sure to cover all areas that may be effected, heel, frog, sole and get in under the feathers. Make sure to soak the skin. And you’re done! RenaSan hypochlorous is a natural biocide, so can be left to dry on the skin. However you must read the label of the product you are using! Only UK and EU compliant hypochlorous products like RenaSan can be left on your horse’s skin, hypochlorite based products must be washed off with soap and water, so makes sure you are not using hypochrite (which is a form of bleach). RenaSan Hypochlorous First Aid sprays are highly effective, killing 99.9999% of the bacteria that causes mud fever, thrush and other germs. www.renasan.co.uk

5 Reasons to feed vitamunch this winter

W

e know that winter can present extra challenges to feeding regimes, but the vitamunch hay block is a really handy way to help keep your horse happy and healthy this winter. The fibre block is based on quality Timothy grass, packed with selected vitamins, minerals and herbs, then sealed for freshness in handy 1kg packs.

1. Relieve boredom Poor pasture and restricted turnout can lead to long hours stood in the stable or out in muddy fields with limited forage. Long periods without food, can affect your horse’s mental and physical health. Vitamunch is great as a boredom breaker both in the field and in the stable, and can be fed in a handy munch net to keep your horse occupied for longer.

2. Help prevent gastric ulcers and keep a healthy gut A horse’s digestive system is designed to eat little and often. Fibre from forage remains the most important part of the diet. As a basic rule of thumb, a horse should eat a minimum of 1% of its bodyweight per day as forage-fibre. This is equivalent to 5kg for a 500kg horse. Gastric ulcers can occur when the horse goes long periods without food, as acid from the stomach can irritate the stomach lining when it is empty or from a lack of saliva, which is usually produced from chewing and eating. Vitamunch is high in fibre and also takes

the horse longer to chew, which helps produce more saliva and helps to keep the digestive tract moving.

3. An easy way to top up vitamins, minerals and herbs Winter grass can be lacking in nutritional goodness and your horse may be not getting everything he needs. A 1kg block of vitamunch provides 50% of the published daily requirement of essential nutrients (based on an average sized horse of 500kg).

4. Feed delicious forage without dust and mould Vitamunch’s specially sourced Timothy grass is cut, baled and dried within 48 hours to ensure freshness. The colour and taste of the Timothy grass is preserved by extracting the excess moisture at low temperatures in a specific drier. The consistent moisture of the bales after drying means there is no scope for mould development in storage. This means the hay maintains a fresh and succulent flavour, as well as nutrient levels.

5. Healthy, handy and ready for use The individual sealed packs means that vitamunch can be stored for 12 months, so you can keep some at home, in the feed room, lorry or back of the car ready for your horse at any time. Vitamunch can be fed every day in addition to your horse’s daily feed and supplements or as a useful distraction for stressful situations such as box rest, travelling, loading, shoeing, clipping, separation or unforeseen circumstances. There are five varieties of munch – Vitamunch® Heavenly Hedgerow, Vitamunch® Marvellous Meadow, Calmmunch™ , Fleximunch™ and Hoofmunch™. www.equilibriumproducts.com february 2017 Localrider 23

e all know that as horses and ponies get into their teenage years and beyond they can start to show the signs of ageing. Maybe they’re not as flexible as they were, have lost a little spark or just don’t look quite in the pink or as good as they once did. However, that doesn’t mean it’s time to turn them out to retirement. Older animals can have so much more to give, bringing to their work a lifetime of experience. So whether you want a safe hack or a serious competition prospect, it’s worth keeping your older equine happy, healthy and enjoying life to the full.

Pic by Showground Photography

Digestive efficiency

Digestive efficiency can be one area where a difference is seen. Over the years many factors, including teeth, diet, medication and regular worming, may take their toll on digestion, meaning the older horse doesn’t hold his weight as well as he did as a youngster. Make sure the older horse is regularly seeing an equine dentist, and maybe review his diet to choose easily digestible options like short chop fibres. Soaking hay and dampening feed all make it a little easier for the older horse

to efficiently digest their forage and fibre elements. Supplementing with probiotic yeast, listed on the label as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been shown to maximise fibre digestion, and so is recommended in older horses. For best results, it’s worth always ensuring probiotics are fed alongside prebiotics as the two work hand in hand. Prebiotics, such as Fructo-oligosaccharide, are specialised sugars that feed the live probiotics, but don’t be concerned if your horse needs to watch his sugar intake, as they’re highly targeted in their action and are suitable for all horses and ponies. Look for broad spectrum vitamins and minerals alongside their daily gut support to ensure all aspects of general health and vitality are being met.

Ageing joints

One area likely to need particular support is ageing joints. Wear and tear from years of riding can result in flexibility and soundness concerns, which may be seen as poor performance, or in more advanced cases will leave the horse or pony unable to be ridden. Take action before it gets to that stage by supporting sound joints

with high specification targeted nutrition. Look for good inclusion rates of the key joint support nutrients, such as MSM and Glucosamine sulphate. It’s worth noting that when looking at glucosamine, the evidence in published research now shows that the sulphate rather than the hydrochloride (HCl) form is the most active, and the one you should be looking for. These key nutrients are often supported by Chondroitin sulphate and Hyaluronic acid which both have roles to play in this complex area. Ideally choose a supplement specifically designed for ageing joints as this should include nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids, and natural antioxidants to provide holistic support all around the joint. In conclusion by providing the older equine with the right nutritional support for gut health, general health and flexible joints we can keep them in great condition, fit and sound to stay working and competing as OAPs – that is, of course, Old Age Performers! VETERANS FEATURE Roo Fifteen-year-old Roo is proving the perfect schoolmaster for 13-year-old Nicola Damms. Nicola’s mother Anne, bought the KPWN gelding for her daughter last year, as with very long legs she was better suited to a horse than a pony.

Versatile Roo can turn his hoof to anything, but with Nicola’s heart firmly in the dressage arena they quickly qualified for the Dengie Pony Club Regionals in both Novice and Intermediate. They were also the Overall Junior Champion at Fawkham & District Riding Club. The combination have lots of goals for 2017 starting with the Dengie Regionals in March. Nicola would like to qualify for the Summer Regionals at Novice, in addition to aiming for the Petplans at Elementary level, as well as trying out for the Pony Club Teams.

Veterans celebrated

We have been over-whelmed by all the wonderful veteran stories we have received. Ranging from 15 to 32 years of age, they have all led such different yet wonderful lives. It is lovely to read that most of the veteran horses and ponies featured are still enjoying an active live and that a few are passing on their wisdom to younger and less experienced riders. We think they are all stars and hope you agree…

Beau Gueste Twenty-one-year Beau Gueste is thoroughly enjoying his active and varied life with Danielle Sales. He had spent six years in the field, after his old owner stopped riding him, before Danielle took him on almost two years ago. Danielle said: “I took Beau Gueste on after returning my loan pony the summer before last. His last owner had retired him to a field at least six years before when they stopped riding him, but he needed someone to give him some love so I took him on trial. He was brilliant from the start, happily plodding around when I had my trial ride and perfect to bathe, clip and shoe. I uploaded his photo onto a cob Facebook page a few months later and a lady contacted me on there and it turned out she was his first owner when he was a foal. She loved him so much that she travelled over six hours to come and see him and I took some photos of her and her daughter with him again. Despite a hock injury that happened just after I took him on he has come on leaps and bounds, out galloping horses at least eight years his junior. We enjoy hacking and Beau has taught me how to jump again, he especially loves cross country jumps. Beau went to his first local show with me last summer and won the in-hand veteran and in-hand unregistered Mountain and Moorland, before coming Reserve In-Hand Champion. I cannot wait to see what this year brings for us.”

Twenty-year-old Boris really has been Alice Griffith’s horse of a lifetime. She has owned the gorgeous grey for ten years and during that time they have done everything together from dressage to team chasing. Alice said: “I got him when he was 10-years-old. He was my first horse and I really had little knowledge of horses (but luckily he was kept at my college yard). He taught me to canter and jump properly. We have done everything from British Dressage (Petplan area finals), team chasing, and we even went to the Veteran Horse Champs, where we went through to the evening performance. Boris proved the ultimate all-rounder and Alice said he taught her everything and along the way they have made lots of special memories, including: Being placed at the U25s British Dressage Champs at Sheepgate, qualifying and competing at area Petplan finals, as well as being mentioned in Horse and Hound for holding the highest score of the day at a British dressage venue. The pair have been team chasing and finished second from 40 starters in an 80cm one-day-event. They have been placed at Equifest, had many British Dressage wins and had great success in Working Hunter classes too. Alice was hoping to compete in some British Eventing competitions during 2017, but sadly due to an old injury flaring up, Boris has taken a well-deserved early retirement.

British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme Ed Chamberlin is currently flying the flag for British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme. With the application window

for the British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme open, one of the programme’s most high profile graduates prepares to return to the sport where he started out. Ed Chamberlin, arguably the programme’s most high-profile graduate, will be ITV’s lead racing presenter when coverage commences on New Year’s Day at Cheltenham. The programme has provided valuable training and development to over 400 graduates since its inception 26 years ago, with the 10-week programme helping to launch the careers of Ed Chamberlin and many successful, high profile figures in British racing, including Regional Director of The Jockey Club Racecourses, Amy Starkey and renowned bloodstock agent, Matt Coleman, a partner in Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. An invaluable training and development platform for graduates and employers alike, the programme works as an entry point for graduates from all backgrounds hoping to start a career in racing, offering wideranging insight and ‘behind the scenes’ access to the workings of many of the industry’s different component parts. Ed Chamberlin completed his placement at Ladbrokes in 1999, before spending 16 years at Sky Sports presenting Super Sunday and Monday Night football. He landed his dream job presenting horseracing with ITV

earlier this year. Ed Chamberlin said: “The British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme gave me a perfect start to my career. It enabled me to combine my passion for sport and horseracing and this has led to me landing the leading presenter role on ITV Racing.” Applications for the 2017 programme are currently open and will close on 28th February, with people in their final year of university, or who have recently graduated with a degree, encouraged to apply. Following the assessment process, 20 recruits will commence a two-week residential course in Newmarket during July, which includes field trips and seminars held by key figures in racing. The course explains how various aspects of the sport work together and gives an insight in to how the different organisations function within the industry. It aids the graduates’ professional development, but also provides the opportunity to build valuable professional relationships with people from across the sport to develop their own careers. Graduates then begin an eight-week paid placement with one of the wideranging sponsors within the industry. In 2017, placement opportunities include roles with the British Horseracing Authority, Great British Racing, The Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Racecourse Association, Racing Post, Racing Welfare and Weatherbys, as well as a variety of posts at Jockey Club Racecourses. ith New Year’s Day occurring on the weekend, it gave us an extra festive day off this year, and that is when Mount Mascal Stables held their traditional New Year’s Day Show to round off the holiday season with fun and friendly competition. Judge, Carley-Ann Hartigan said: “The New Year Nursery and Santa Starter Stakes for the beginner and less experienced show jumper were both very busy classes, with lots of young riders looking super smart in their new Christmas gift show gear. The Mistletoe Minimus class was split – horses and ponies – to give everyone the best chance and Pantomime Pairs – one horse two riders – provided great fun as always with the challenge of riders having to use a boxed area to hand over and mount. The Nutcracker Novice saw two riders from the King’s Troop battle with their horses for the top place, with Captain Lavin on Chopper taking first and Lance Bombardier Priesty on Titan coming in second. The Ivy Intermediate was built to maximum height and proved to be an excellent warm-up for the Puissance Pudding. This final and spectacular class was won by formerly successful contenders Lauren Withey and her lovely bay gelding, Averons, jumping just above 5’0”. Warrant Officer 2 Dennis riding Donkey, a horse who enjoyed massive spectator support, was runner-up and, coming a gallant third behind these two horses, was 14.2hh mare Dark Castle ridden by the winner’s younger sister, Cerys Withey. The 2016 Puissance Champion, Juliet Maher, had competed at the show and was therefore present to hand the cup over to the new and very deserving winner.” We were very pleased to welcome all our competitors including nine horses and eight riders from the King’s Troop who told us they had a great day and plan to be back. The show is always a massive Mount Mascal Stables team effort, in front of and behind the scenes, and this year we enjoyed a fantastic day.

Feed news

Feeding the Veteran Horse & Pony

Allen & Page’s Veteran Light The latest addition to Allen & Page’s hugely popular Barley & Molasses Free Range, is an excellent new feed, Veteran Light, which has been specifically formulated for older horses and ponies that are good doers and for those prone to laminitis. Providing all the nutritional requirements for optimum health as horses get older (when fed at recommended levels), it still achieves a low calorie/energy level which is ideal for those who hold weight too well.

As horse’s age their dietary needs can change. Some remain good doers, while others struggle to maintain their weight. In recent years research has allowed feed and supplement companies to produce products to help keep your veteran both healthy and happy.

Pure Feed Launch Veteran Range As horses get older, they often need a little extra help to maintain their condition and topline. It’s worth remembering that it’s not just older horses that are in regular active work which are likely to need additional nutritional help as the years’ advance. All older horses can benefit. Getting the feed balance just right in a veteran requires an innate understanding of the changing nutritional needs of the older equine. It is important to feed a diet that is high in fibre and low in starch. The Pure Feed Company has launched its own dedicated range of quality feeds for Veterans that does just that. Available in a mix or pellet format. The Pure Veteran range combines a high specification balancer with easily digestible fibre and quality oils to provide a slow release energy source. With no added sugar, molasses or wholegrain cereals. This ensures the older horse receives all the nutritional support it needs, without the fizz. Incorporated in the feeds are essential amino acids to provide the necessary building blocks for developing and retaining topline and muscle. In addition high spec pre and probiotics are also included to help keep the hind gut functioning just as nature intended. Pure Veteran’s low starch appeal ensures it is well placed to meet the nutritional requirements of the older horse suffering from Cushing’s Disease and/or laminitis, although it is not a suitable option for an overweight horse or pony. The Pure Veteran Mix provides a super quick and easy feeding solution for veterans, simply dampen with water before feeding. Poor teeth can often cause feeding problems for the older horse, so Pure Veteran Pellets has been developed specifically with this in mind. The pellets can be soaked two parts water to one-part feed to create a soft and palatable and appetising mash. The pellets should be soaked for up to an hour (using hot water will speed up the process).

Allen & Page has produced a free factsheet on Feeding Veterans which is available from stockists, and as a download via the website at www.veteranhorsefeeds.co.uk

AppleChaff AppleChaff is high in healthy fibre. It is made from the finest quality straw, which has been chopped and dust extracted, then dressed with a unique, low sugar dressing. It contains real diced apple pieces as well as apple essence to make it irresistible to even the fussiest of feeders. It is well known that apples are not just a tasty favourite of horses, but are a good source of a wide range of natural nutrients, including potassium, calcium, vitamin C and dietary fibre. AppleChaff also contains added limestone to increase calcium levels in the diet. Like all the products in the Mollichaff range, AppleChaff is naturally high in fibre and is excellent for adding bulk to a horse or pony’s diet, helping to promote good digestion by stimulating the production of saliva and regulating the slow passage of food through the gut. AppleChaff is great value and can be mixed into the hard feed ration, or used as a palatable base in which to add supplements, balancers and medication. www.horsehage.co.uk

Rowen Barbary Senior Support Senior Support combines high levels of oils with antioxidants and added Yeasacc1026 to help ensure efficient fibre and mineral digestion, keeping your veteran in tip top shape. Glucosamine HCL is also included to support joint mobility and help reduce any signs of stiffness displayed in the older horse along with Biotin for hoof health and added herbs spearmint and garlic. By feeding Senior Support you can help alleviate the symptoms that bring on the aging process.

Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer NAF Five Star Optimum will help restore and maintain five star condition and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Concentrated and easy to feed, Optimum comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. Optimum is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate, or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that Optimum can be simply given on its own, directly from your hand. It is designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Animalife Vetrofen Effective, fast-acting and convenient, Animalife’s Vetrofen Intense 3.5g sachets are back. Vetrofen has been scientifically formulated to offer support in dealing with intense activity or recovery from physical trauma, and is proven beneficial when administered both before and after a strenuous workout to aid comfort and recovery. www.animalife.co.uk

feed news Lifeforce Focus

Five Star Superflex Senior

Live strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are commonly used in equine nutrition to enhance fibre digestion in horses. The overall effect of adding yeast to the diet is the stimulation of fibre-digestion, as well as stabilisation of the hindgut environment and microbial ecosystem. This results in an increase in feed efficiency i.e. what the animal can get out of its feed. While we cannot turn back the clock for our golden oldies what we can do is ensure we are doing everything to give them a fighting chance of coming through winter without feeling their age. Lifeforce focus, the supplement from alltech is specially designed for leisure and companion horses or those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimise digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies.

Naf five Star Superflex Senior is a unique formulation providing their highest specification of the key joint support nutrients for horses, working in synergy with rich natural sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and naturally sourced antioxidants to support healthy, flexible joints in older horses and ponies still leading active lives.

TopSpec Senior and Senior Lite Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior feed balancer is designed for elderly horses. It combines the benefits of a feed balancer and a joint supplement, in a highly cost-effective way. TopSpec Senior Lite feed balancer is designed for elderly horses that are prone to weight gain. It combines the benefits of a low-calorie feed balancer and a joint supplement. both feed balancers include the scientifically recommended rate of glucosamine in a daily quantity of feed to help maintain mobility. This rate is 10 grams of glucosamine/500kg horse/day. They are very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ feeds that contains several supplements which provide the levels of micro-nutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements.

In the Pink Senior for all Old age Performers, In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In the Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Specially chosen herbs support a youthful spark. In the Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

KM Elite Ultimate Oil

fibre-beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of Speedi-beet, with added high quality alfalfa for optimum condition, and quality protein for muscle tone and function. added biotin for hoof quality makes fibre-beet a great feed for promoting hoof health, and it’s also suitable for horses and ponies susceptible to laminitis. It can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance) and can be soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water. High in fibre and ideal for providing bulk for healthy gut function, fibre-beet maintains the same hindgut conditions and function you would get from a horse on good quality hay or grass, but with the added bonus that it produces less lactic acid. Quick soaking and cost effective, a 20kg bag of fibre-beet contains over 100 scoops of soaked feed.

ultimate Oil is the next generation in oil supplementation. a blend of high quality oils providing more than 190 bioactive nutrients including healthy ratios of Omegas 3, 6, 9 and rare Omega 7 - nourishing the body with essential fatty acids, minerals, plant sterols, antioxidants, amino acids, anti-viral and antibacterial nutrients and vitamins including Vitamins a, b1, b2, b6, b12, b15, C, e, K. all the oils in ultimate Oils are of the highest quality, easily biologically absorbed by your horse and are included at specific levels for specific reasons so they work together, creating a synergetic effect for the total health and well-being of your horse. One of these effects is the balance and ratios of essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is important to remember that horses need a balance of both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids for optimal health and performance. It isn’t necessarily so that one is better than the other - they simply have different roles in the body and must be in balance with each other for optimal health and body function. Omega 3 is responsible for repairing cellular walls and maintaining a fluid and efficient waste-nutrient transfer. It’s also critical for brain function and is instrumental in cleaning up after an injury has healed, acting as a potent anti-inflammatory. Omega 6 on the other hand, is responsible for causing inflammation and immune system reactions, which is necessary to stabilize injuries and fight off infections.

FEATURE For the second year running, Her Majesty The Queen’s Barbers Shop, ridden by Katie Jerram, landed the RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse Championship at Royal Windsor (2016). Note H.M The Queen holding the cup, Barbers Shop had just won.

Barbers Shop

Name: Barbers Shop Age: 15 Sex: Gelding Sire: Saddlers´ Hall (IRE) Dam: Close Harmony Owner: H.M. The Queen Breeder: H.M. The Queen Racing History: Trained by Nicky Henderson Barbers Shop raced a total of 24 times winning eight times and running in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. Retrained as: A showing superstar

Since leaving training, Barbers Shop who is owned and was bred by Her Majesty The Queen has had enormous success in the show ring. Alex Kelly found out a little bit more about the double Royal Windsor RoR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse Champion. Upon leaving training in 2012 Barbers Shop went for some rest and relaxation at Windsor Castle with stud groom Terry Pendry before arriving with Katie Jerram to begin his new career as a show horse. From the outset, Barbers Shop was charming, having quickly established himself as “Mr. Perfect” in the yard. Initially, he struggled with his canter

transitions, but Katie took him back to basics, working on his transitions daily, so that he learned to balance. Gradually improving over the winter, he made a winning show ring début in the spring. The elegant son of Saddlers’ Hall went on to claim the RoR Final at the Hickstead Derby Meeting, a very big achievement, as he had not been out of training a year. With his gentlemanly outlook and elegant frame, side saddle seemed an obvious next step for Barbers Shop. He gracefully took to the job in hand and cuts a fine picture gliding around the ring. Naturally with his royal connections when Barbers Shop wins at Royal Windsor Horse Show it is very special. Katie reflects

that this year’s show, where he won the RoR National Hunt Class before standing Champion, as a very memorable occasion, as he was also taking part in the Queen’s birthday celebrations, which took place each evening. Barbers Shop loves a treat and isn’t too much of a gentleman to have a good humoured search of a pocket to find a sugary something to satisfy his sweet tooth. At home he enjoys hacking out and has lots of fun cantering up the hills. He is turned out in the field with Katie’s former HOYS Supreme Champion Dunbeacon (who has now retired), where the pair relish a more laid back approach to life. FEBRUARY 2017 Localrider 67
