Welcome

he last few weeks have been some of the best and most exciting I have had at Localrider. May started with a trip to Badminton to support the local combinations who were competing in the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton Horse Trials. There were plenty in the top ten at the start of cross-country day, but for a few there were costly time penalties and the odd blip saw them drop down the order, but I am pleased to report good placings in both the BE90 and BE100 Championships. Turn to page 20 to find out just how well they did. That week, the great results just kept coming and we had three ‘locals’ in the top seven placings at Badminton. Whilst Michael Jung made winning Badminton and the Rolex Grand Slam look easy, we were thrilled that Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul finished third and Best of the Brits. Our local Kiwi, Clarke Johnstone was fifth and Tina Cook finished in seventh. See page 15 for the full report.
Celebrating at Royal Windsor From eventing our thoughts turned to showing and one of our favourite local shows, Royal Windsor. There was huge disappointment for the show organisers, competitors and all concerned when the first day of the show was cancelled as a result of excessive rainfall the night before. I am extremely grateful to the reader who text to let me know immediately they heard the news, allowing me to divert home at the next junction of the M25. I returned to Windsor on the Friday and was able to watch some fabulous classes in the sunshine. There were lots of locals in the ribbons and our full report starts on page 46. Royal Windsor was doubly special this year as it was also celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday. The HMQ90 evening performance was sensational and aired live on television on the Sunday night. If you missed it, you may be able to find a recording, I would certainly recommend trying to watch it. For those who would like a reminder of the celebratory night, turn to page 44.
Bursting with Show Reports Lots of you have been sending in show reports and news from around the region and we have received so many wonderful pictures, that we have added in an extra eight pages to this issue to squeeze them all in. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we have putting it together. We are delighted to announce that we have two Free tickets to the Hickstead Derby Meeting (Thursday & Friday) in this issue. Turn to page 43 and make sure you cut out and save your tickets safely. Localrider will be reporting at Hickstead and other events over the coming months, so make sure you stay in touch and let us know where you are heading. Wooden Spoon funded RDA ponies Wooden Spoon - the children’s charity of rugby, and Riding for The Disabled Association (RDA) have launched a new charity initiative to support disabled children and young people across the UK. In preparation for RDA’s 50th anniversary in 2019, Wooden Spoon have pledged to help the RDA fund a team of horses across the country. RDA is experiencing a growing demand for services amongst older children and needs to increase the number of bigger horses at its centres across the UK. HRH, The Princess Royal, who is Royal Patron of both charities said: “I am particularly pleased as this exciting initiative combines two of my big passions, horses and rugby. Both pastimes offer a great deal to young people from all walks of life which makes the Wooden Spoon and Riding for The Disabled partnership all the more important. In today’s world it is important for all organisations to collaborate and this is particularly the case with charities. Collaboration can lead to more of the hard earned income reaching beneficiaries. I have the privilege of seeing first hand, the good work that is done by both charities.” Wooden Spoon Lead Ambassador, Phil Vickery MBE said: “Last year Wooden Spoon reached the milestone of having granted in excess of £250,000 to RDA projects. This year we hope to make even more of an impact. I am delighted to be involved in this exciting new initiative.” Long-term corporate supporter of Wooden Spoon, TNT, are the first to sponsor a horse as part of this initiative. Director of Sales, Daniel Vines said: “We are delighted to extend our support to kick-start this exciting new fundraising campaign, supporting Riding for The Disabled Association and Wooden Spoon. Sponsoring a horse for this purpose is a welcome first for TNT and we wish both charities every success.” To find out more about this charity initiative and to see information on the children and young people that will benefit visit woodenspoon.org.uk/rda

Mollichaff Relaunches Complete Feed Range
T
he new Bedale GP jump saddle from Whitaker is the perfect cross over saddle ideal for training and competition use. This Leather and Synthetic mix saddle is more forward cut than traditional GP saddles assisting balance and helping to alleviate pressure on your horses back. The outer of the Bedale is completely covered in soft, comfortable, durable leather whilst the under panel of the saddle is made from a synthetic, wipe clean material. Manoeuvrable knee and thigh blocks help keep you in position and the additional point strap fixes your saddle perfectly in place. Introducing the new Whitaker Interchangeable Size Bar System. Six size bars allow you to change the width of your saddle with ease. This simple system uses an easy access panel and is extremely easy to use. www.johnwhitaker.com
Does your horse stand out from the others? That little bit of extra topline, balance and swinging paces coupled with lightness and power can make the difference in a line-up with many lovely horses. In all disciplines a horse with a lovely topline, suppleness and balance will stand out. Lungeing can help to achieve this. Long reins or a training aid such as the EquiAmi lungeing aid are very effective in getting a horse working through his back, improving balance and paces and lightness, whilst developing topline. Considerable amounts of time can be saved as a twenty minute gymnastic session on the lunge can be the equivalent of forty minutes under saddle. Careful preparation and attention to detail will get the best from your horse and make competitions more enjoyable and rewarding without breaking the bank in the process. www.equiami.com

Mollichaff has relaunched its range of three complete feeds with brand new, full colour packaging and a new size of 15kg for all three varieties. The Mollichaff Complete range offers three fibre-based complete feeds for specific conditions: Mollichaff HoofKind for horses and ponies prone to laminitis; Mollichaff Calmer for nervous or excitable horses and ponies; and Mollichaff Condition for encouraging weight gain and condition. When fed at the recommended amounts, the complete feeds can be used as the sole bucket feed as they each contain a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement and only require good quality forage to be fed alongside. Being fibrebased feeds rather than cereal-based, they are a much more natural way of feeding. Said Chris Tar of HorseHage: “The new packaging has been designed to catch the eye and differentiate the Mollichaff complete feeds from the Mollichaff range of chaffs, as we felt that many people were confusing the two ranges.” To celebrate the relaunch, one bag from the new range contains a ‘Golden Ticket’ to win a pair of VIP hospitality tickets for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) for Friday 7th October 2016, which includes the best seats and a three course lunch whilst enjoying the show, so check inside your bag to make sure you don’t miss out! £1 off vouchers are available to download from Facebook and the HorseHage website and don’t forget to check out the HorseHage & Mollichaff Facebook page for a new photo competition to win products from the Complete range. www.horsehage.co.uk
Happy Hacking in Rotherfield The Rotherfield Woodlands Riding Club is a small non-profit club, which works with land owners to provide access to off road hacking in the Rotherfield area. Members have access to privately owned woodlands and the area has many bridleways and byways which link the woodlands to provide extensive hacking options. The club committee has aspirations to increase access and create dedicated parking in the area. The provision of off road hacking is the prime purpose of the club, but a popular horse and dog show and quiz nights help to bring people together and raise funds. Pearl of Peace, the UK’s first ‘gold’ Andalusian stallion, has just passed his official breed grading and is now available at stud. The uniquely coloured four-year-old stallion is one of very few horses in the world to possess the rare and newly mapped pearl gene. Born in March 2012 and known at home as Oro, Pearl of Peace is a genetic rarity. This young PRE Andalusian stallion is the first of his kind in the United Kingdom and possesses the double pearl and single black gene. The pearl gene alone is incredibly rare and the physical exhibition of the pearl gene coat dilution is even more unusual. The pearl gene is the most recent equine gene to be mapped for equine testing, and has only been confirmed in a few breeds. Considered to be one of the most rare colour traits, the introduction of the gene to the United Kingdom is a positive move for British breeding. Find out more at www.EquusVita.com

The ITV news presenter said he was “thrilled to bits” to be offered the position. Alastair Stewart, the award winning news broadcaster best known for anchoring the ITV evening news for 31 years, is one of the uK’s longest serving news presenters. His career has spanned politics, war and royal weddings, but a passion for horses has always been present. “Horses have been and will always be a massive part of my life.” He said “It started at a young age when I rode whilst at boarding school in Kent. I even courted my wife, Sally Ann, on horseback. Two of my children took to it too - my son Freddie runs a livery & training centre and my son Oscar is a professional show-jumper. now I’m keen to give something back.” The Brooke is a global animal welfare charity that protects and improves the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules that support people living in the developing world. There are 112 million of these animals, and they support the lives of around 600 million people. The Brooke works with owners, communities, governments and international organisations to make lasting improvements to the welfare of these animals. “Becoming patron for the Brooke is a huge honour” he said, “I have supported them for a number of years, attending events and following their work closely, so I already know it’s a great charity that does vital work for the world’s most vulnerable horses, donkeys and mules.” “I’m looking forward to learning more, experiencing the work first-hand and taking an active role to help raise the profile of this wonderful charity.” To find out more about the Brooke’s work go to www.thebrooke.org

Exclusively Equestrian
H
oused in a traditional timber and tile barn at the centre of a busy working farm, Exclusively Equestrian is a gem of a shop, selling wonderful collections of both casual and competition clothing to riders across various disciplines. Just five minutes from Lingfield Racecourse the show room is truly unique and is open to visiting customers between the hours of 10am and 4pm, with other times available by appointment. Exclusively Equestrian has grown from owner Jane Horsman’s original business, 1624 Equine Couture, which she started just over five years ago. 1624 was born out of Jane’s frustration to find decent brands of breeches, such as Pikeur in a size 16 in any of her local tack shops. Initially focusing on providing fashionable, comfortable and affordable clothing for the slightly larger lady, Jane soon discovered that slim, petite ladies were experiencing the same difficulties in finding riding clothes that they liked. Standing in the picturesque farmyard at Bowerland Farm, one feels like they have stepped back in time, but open the door to Exclusively Equestrian’s show room and you are transported into a haven of equestrian clothing, elegantly displayed in jewel like colours.
Customer Service is King Jane and her team of Sam Kelly, Lena Smeaton, Natalie Hazeltine and Georgia Lawson are clearly passionate about the brands they sell, and their experience and attention to detail shines through as they chat to customers about the different products, which may be suitable for them. Customer service is at the heart of their business and the team are more than happy to provide a ‘Personal Shopping’ service, although it is advisable to call and book an appointment in advance. This also gives Jane more time to discuss the customer’s
individual requirements, such as what they are looking for, what size they are etc. Then she can prepare a rail of clothes ready for the customer to look at. If someone is looking to replace a whole competition outfit, they may spend a few hours at the showroom trying on various items and the team are more than happy to supply tea and cake or a glass of Prosecco to help the shopping experience along. Listening to Jane chat about her customers there was a similarity to the service brides experience when they are wedding dress shopping. Something which as far as I am aware is unique to Exclusively Equestrian.
Retail therapy with Prosecco This experience can be extended to groups of friends who want to make an afternoon or evening of shopping together. Exclusively Equestrian stock a huge range of competition clothing suitable for all disciplines from driving to dressage, but with this season’s wonderful collection of ‘Matchy Matchy’ outfits for both riders and horses, some girly gossip and retail therapy fuelled by Prosecco, sounds like the perfect yard get together. The shop also has regular customers popping in for everyday essentials. While I was busy taking pictures a gentleman came in to buy over reach boots for his daughter’s horse. Having made his purchase he left, promising to return with his daughter, who would love all the wonderful casual riding clothes. When Jane questioned whether this would be wise, he said: “It is OK, she is earning her own money now.”
Experience in all disciplines Between them the team have competed in most disciplines,

including dressage, show jumping, eventing and carriage driving. The wonderful range stocked by Exclusively Equestrian is also very popular with showing competitors and Equetech make their tweed range especially for Exclusively Equestrian in larger sizes up to size 50. Last year they had one customer who collected her new breeches on the way to HOYS in her horsebox. The brands stocked include Pikeur, Eskadron, Euro Star, HV Polo, Cavallo (winter range), Eskadron Platinum range, House of Montar, Equetech and Mountain Horse. In addition they are able to sell and fit Charles Owen, Samshield and Kask Helmets. Jane explained how they want their customers to leave the shop looking the best that they possibly can and if one hat is making their face look a bit round, they might suggest a different one, which would fit their face shape better. The same attention to detail applies when riders are trying on new competition jackets. Jane will ask the customer to sit on a stool in front of the mirror, so they can imagine how the jacket will look when they are riding in the ring. Sometimes Jane says she has to ask a client to try something different, perhaps something they don’t like the look of to start with, but once they try it on, they usually understand why Jane made the suggestion.
available in the show room Jane can send it out via post or bring it to the next Hickstead meeting for the customer to collect. Some customers regularly call in to have a browse around the trailer, even if they are not competing at the event themselves. Exclusively Equestrian is also an important player in the online global equestrian community, shipping on a regular basis to Australia, USA, Japan, South Africa, as well as to other countries. The team are on first name terms with one customer in Japan, who regularly sends through repeat orders.
Out & about with the Trailer
Depending on the time of year you visit Exclusively Equestrian you may be greeted by a herd of Sussex cattle, famous for their deep rich red coats and if you are very lucky you might meet the stars of the herd, Stanley and Peter. For elegant, comfortable affordable equestrian clothing visit the Exclusively Equestrian website and if you are tempted by what you see I would recommend visiting their wonderful show room at Bowerland Farm.
Regular competitors at Dressage at Hickstead will be familiar with the Exclusively Equestrian trailer, which attends both the affiliated and unaffiliated competitions. It has its own small changing room and stocks the same range of beautifully designed clothing that is available in the show room. In addition there are supplements and small handy products which competitors might need on the day. If customers can’t find what they want on the trailer but it is
Big Barn Bargains Exclusively Equestrian run a number of fun events both on-line and at the show room in Lingfield. The Big Barn Bargains is traditionally run around Halloween and is exactly what the name suggests. One of the big barns bursting with bargains. With prices slashed on some products I would suggest getting there as early as possible this year. They also participate in Cyber Monday and Black Friday, advising of offers on their Facebook page or via email newsletter (both of which I suggest signing up to).

REGIONAL ROUNDUP
Words by Alex Kelly
The Tank and Roanna Hamilton at BSPA Eastern Show
Judy and Georgia Harvey from Bolney in West Sussex enjoyed a memorable day at the BHSA Southern Show with their exciting new horse, High Estate. Produced from home, High Estate joined the mother-daughter team last summer with the plan to be a shared horse. Georgia and Judy flipped a coin and fate decided that Judy would ride in the Open Riding Horse RIHS qualifier where the twelve-yearold gelding behaved impeccably to come second and stand Reserve Champion. Georgia’s turn came later in the day in the Amateur Owner Rider class, after yet another mannerly display, they won the class and the section championship. 19-year-old Georgia, who is studying product design at Cardiff University, continued to impress the judges to be crowned Supreme Champion Amateur Owner Rider and Reserve Overall Supreme of the Show. High Estate will be joined in the show ring later this season by Judy’s other large riding horse, Firstman, who is stabled with Adam Wimbourne. Both Judy and Georgia are looking forward to some friendly family rivalry as the season hot’s up.

R
oanna Hamilton’s 2016 show season got off to a dream start at the BSPA Eastern Show where she won two RIHS tickets with her ridden coloureds. The Tank, a five-year-old traditional pony, won the Home Produced Ridden class, before scoring his RIHS ticket. Not to be out done was Roanna’s seasoned campaigner, Nantllesg Elwyn, who was once again spot on to impress the judges and qualify for the Hickstead final for the fifth time. The Tank followed up his successful seasonal debut by standing In-Hand Champion and Reserve Ridden Champion at the Showing South East Show. Roanna, from Deal in Kent, produces both of her ponies from home with limited facilities (Tank and Elwyn live out 24/7). “I am very excited for the season head.” Roanna told us, “and I am really looking forward to competing in the HOYS qualifiers”.
Mandy Burchell-Small and The Rowfantina show team have two exciting lead rein prospects for 2016 and both are already making their mark on the show circuit. Homebred Rowfantina Royal Occasion (grandson of HOYS winning Rowfantina Old Fashioned out of her daughter, Rowfantina Old Times, by Idyllic Entrepreneur) was lightly shown in 2015 standing Mini Champion at BSPS Area 15a and narrowly missing his place at HOYS when he was second and Reserve Champion at Royal Norfolk Show. This season six-year-old Poppy Steadman has taken over the reins, winning the Overall Supreme Championship at BSPS Area 14 Summer Show. Poppy also rides the Ashurstwood based yards other exciting prospect, Seamoor Lady Derby. Purchased from her breeders, the Harris Family, when a lunch date with Mandy’s sister turned into a pony buying trip. Aged five and by Basford Court Jester, Lady Derby attended her first show at SEWPCA Spring Show and displayed manners way beyond her experience to win the Overall Ridden Supreme of the Show. Her calm attitude stood her in good stead at The South of England Spring Show, as she once again won the Lead Rein class to qualify for the RIHS.

ine-year-old Penstrumbly Stone Roses and Lisa Barsoum qualified for HOYS for the third time, after winning (and standing section champion) The TSR Show held at Onley Equestrian Centre. Lisa and the eye catching Welsh Cob have enjoyed success at the show before, in 2014 when they also won and qualified. “It must be our lucky show,” said Lisa “but this time he went one better and stood Champion.” Lisa purchased Penstrumbly Stone Roses from Brightwells Cob Sales when he was aged two. “I just loved his type and substance,” she said. Leaving the son of Menai Fire Storm until he was six to start his ridden career, Lisa lightly, but successfully showed him as a novice, before venturing into the open classes the following year, where he qualified for Olympia as well as HOYS. Enjoying grooming at the Smarden Therapeutic Stables
Smarden Therapeutic Stables Kent based Smarden Therapeutic Stables CIC (Community Interest Company) has recently gained Accessibility Mark accreditation. Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), in partnership with Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme launched the Accessibility Mark scheme to encourage those who do not already partake in equestrian activities or would not usually have the opportunity to do so, to experience the many benefits that riding can bring. Set in the beautiful Kentish countryside, Smarden Therapeutic Stables CIC was set up by Occupational Therapist Caroline Parfitt, who specialises in autism, mental health issues, ADHD and learning disabilities and Lisa Evans who has been a riding instructor for over 23 years. Caroline said: “Just being around horses is hugely beneficial for physical and mental well-being, helping with social skills, and developing teamwork, which is something people with autism can sometimes struggle with. The Accessibility Mark accreditation gives people security in the knowledge that we have been assessed by a well-established association and the continued support from the RDA is invaluable. We believe passionately in the positive outcomes that can be achieved through working and being with horses in a therapeutic manner,” added Caroline. FEATURE
Have you heard of a Hackamore-Hybrid? Words by Stephen Biddlecombe
W
e’d like to tell you about the newest bit on the block, a combination of a Hackamore and an American Gag, with the combined effects of a hackamore and a bit. As we discussed in our article in the February issue of Localrider, the English Hackamore has a leather noseband as opposed to the stainless steel of the Continental option. The English Hackamore also has a shorter shank which offers less leverage, making it the gentler of the two options.
Measuring notes The measured width of a horse’s mouth (from corner to corner with no wrinkles) is rounded up to the nearest 5mm. This is known as MMS, or Measured Mouth Size. A fixed mouth piece does not require any additional width to be added to the measured width of the horse’s mouth.
Ideal for strong, sensitive mouthed horses
These are both popular pieces of riding kit, however we are also delighted to be able to showcase the Hackamore-Hybrid, as it is ideal for strong, sensitive mouthed horses; the Hybrid distributes pressure uniformly on the equine’s nose, mouth and poll. The reins can be attached at various positions to allow for varying degrees of leverage. The amount of movement in the mouthpiece can be altered by moving the stopper above the mouthpiece, while the nosepiece is padded for the horse’s comfort, and there’s also a nylon curb strap. We choose to stock the mouthpiece of the Hybrid bit from Bombers Bits in two styles at www.worldwidetack.com. The ‘Bomber Blue’ is a ported bit made from a unique rubber and nylon compound (RRP £210.00 inc VAT). It is a unique bit which produces amazing results for the majority of horses; the mouthpiece is ported to give tongue relief. The material used allows the bit to remain light, and it encourages salivation. It is particularly well suited to horses that object to metal mouth pieces. The Happy Tongue option has a curved and ported mouthpiece made from sweet iron (RRP £191.00 inc VAT). This is a solid mouth piece for tongue relief. The Happy Tongue would be a good place to start if your horse is shaking its head, sticking its tongue out, trying to put its tongue over the bit, or going behind the bit to avoid the contact. The rider will know immediately if the correct bit has been chosen, as a horse with a sensitive tongue will finally begin to work into, and accept the contact. Changing the cheekpieces of the Hybrid would also allow the rider to adjust the level of control. These two mouthpieces - the synthetic Bomber Blue, and the Sweet Iron Happy Tongue - represent two very good solutions for very sensitive mouthed, strong, onward-going horses. Care must be taken, as with any mechanical hackamore, that the Hybrid’s noseband sits above the horse’s nasal bone.
Above: The ‘Bomber Blue’ is made from a rubber and nylon compound that encourages salivation. Right: The Happy Tongue Hybrid has a curved, ported, sweet iron mouthpiece; ideal for tongue relief.
Coming next issue we discuss bit cheekpieces...
A new option
In the right hands, a Hackamore can offer a sophisticated training tool that provides unique and valuable benefits - and our online store offers both a Continental and an English Hackamore, alongside Sheepskin Hackamore accessories. However, the system is not right for every horse and rider, and can be misused in the wrong hands. Hence, the new Hackamore-Hybrid is a useful option for anyone who is interested in the Hackamore concepts, but wants to consider something else. We find that upper level show jumping riders commonly look to bitting solutions such as these, as they are seeking control and obedience within the arena, but want a sympathetic bitting option that recognises equine mouth confirmation and In the right hands, a Hackamore is its associated issues. a sophisticated training tool. Linda & Pat Parelli Give Olympian Bent Jensen Another Chance “He’s a completely different horse now,” said dressage Olympian Bent Jensen of his horse, Chance, after an encounter with Pat and Linda Parelli of Parelli Natural Horsemanship...

Difficult to load
It was an all-too-typical equestrian scenario. You point your horse toward the trailer, and all forward momentum ceases. Recently, Danish Olympian Bent Jensen, currently based out of Wellington, Florida, decided he would face that struggle for the very last time with his horse Chance. So Jensen decided to take a chance by calling in the experts— Parelli Natural Horsemanship. As it turned out, this was a chance worth taking. “He had gotten more and more difficult to load. The last time I took him somewhere, it took us an hour and a half to load him,” Jensen explained. “We had to sedate him to get him on the trailer, and going home it was the same. I didn’t think it was the right thing to do for the horse. He’s not a mean horse; he was just confused and scared. It turns out he was claustrophobic.”
Feeling confident
After a few short hours with Pat and Linda Parelli, the creators of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, that same horse was walking into the trailer with confidence and ease. Jensen wasn’t sure he could believe it at first, but he was definitely happy to see the result— and, perhaps more importantly, to understand what was happening. “It made a difference for me because now I understand it and can help my horse myself,” he said.
Teaching trust
To achieve the type of results that the Parellis achieved with Chance, the Parellis focus on first understanding the horse, both physically and mentally. By carefully gaining insight into what they call the horse’s “Horsenality,” they can diagnose a horse’s problem and teach the horse to develop trust with his rider and motivate the horse to learn new behaviours to overcome this problem. One of the most important elements of Parelli Natural Horsemanship is the programme’s dedication to teaching riders like Jensen. It’s the program’s mission to
Bent Jensen with his horse Chance on the trailer raise the level of horsemanship worldwide to benefit the equestrian community at large and ensure riders and trainers are taking the necessary steps to truly understanding their equine partners. Everyone, from successful Olympians like Jensen to young beginner riders, can find clearer communication with their horses through Parelli Natural Horsemanship. Now that Jensen has been exposed to this methodology of training, he says, “I think it’s very important to know and understand horses in this way. Parelli worked for Chance and me, and I definitely encourage other riders to look into this.”
Other riders looking for assistance with any kind of behavioral challenges with their horses can visit www.ParelliSavvyClub.com — where equestrians can find a one-stop shop for training resources, from articles to action plans to videos. How Important Are Arena Materials? For over 20 years Mark Scott of Mark Scott Arenas has been building, upgrading and maintaining riding arenas in the South East. Since 2008 Mark has seen an increase in riders attempting to build their own arena in order to save money. Unfortunately, all too often, Mark is called to help rescue the situation within just a few years of the DIY arena being built.
Complete arena refurbishment and new waxed surface
Here Mark explains some of the problems he has encountered and helps to explain why working with someone experienced and able to offer good advice can help you save money in the long term.
“
One of the main concerns a rider will have when building a new arena, is cost. With this in mind it is easy to be lured into asking friends and family, especially those familiar with the building trades into helping. It can start with a friend down the road, who can drive an excavator and says he can provide sand for a good price too, but be cautious and research the products you are buying. The sand used in arenas varies both in price and quality from the sand used by builders, which isn’t suitable for equestrian arenas.
Equine sand is essential
Good quality equine sand combines its fine particle size with angularity. These two qualities are paramount to the success of the riding surface. There are very few pits which can supply this material and it is in high demand. If you are buying through a trade supplier, make sure it is the right sand for equestrian use. An arena build will normally start with timber fencing, membranes and drainage pipes, but the quality of these items can vary considerably and you should always aim to install the best you can afford.
HD Arena Groomer in action
For all your New Arenas and Gallops, Maintenance and Refurbishments
Avoid poor quality products
Drainage bed stone is another product which can catch the uninformed customer out. It is possible to buy stone, which looks the part at a fraction of the cost of the quarry cleaned and graded stones supplied by an arena company. However, recycled softer and dusty less expensive products will most probably cap off forming an impermeable layer in three to five years, resulting in drainage problems and surface puddles. Synthetic surface additives, range from PVC granules to rubber of varying styles, as well as fibre additives, all of which vary in quality and life expectancy. As professional installers we are often asked to look at arenas which have been built with low quality materials. The cost of fixing these arenas can sometimes cost as much as it would have cost to build the arena from scratch, as much of the surface material needs removing and sometimes expensive landfill is the only place it can go.
”
Whilst with the right information and building skills it is possible to build an arena oneself, all too often it can go wrong. Mark cautions readers to seek advice and remember working with someone experienced can save you money in the long term.

HICKSTEAD PREVIEW
Who will make a winning return to Hickstead this summer? Can he do it a third time? Last year Trevor Breen won the Equestrian.com Hickstead Derby on Loughnatousa WB and in 2014 he won on Adventure de Kannan, will he be another rider to claim three successive Derby victories?
Last year Guy Williams and Casper De Muze set a new course record for the British Speed Derby.

inning just one of Hickstead’s famous classes guarantees a rider their place in the history books of equestrian sport, but it’s doing so multiple times that elevates the greatest of those to legendary status. Hickstead Director Lizzie Bunn said: “So many of show jumping’s greats have jumped to victory in the famous International Arena here at the All England Jumping Course, and some of the sport’s biggest names grace our trophies over and over – often for consecutive years”. That’s certainly what has happened in the history of the Hickstead Derby. Who can forget Eddie Macken and Boomerang’s four wins on the trot from 1976 to 1979? A number of illustrious names have won three times in a row, including Nick Skelton, Michael Whitaker and Peter Charles, and now Ireland’s Trevor Breen aims to join this elite band, following victory in 2014 on Adventure de Kannan and again in 2015 on Loughnatousa WB. Another rider aiming for a third consecutive victory at the Equestrian.com Hickstead Derby Meeting (23-26 June 2016) is Guy Williams, who won the British Speed Derby in 2014 and 2015 with Casper De Muze. His win last summer broke the course record and made Guy the first rider to win the class four times – having already won in both 2002 and 2004. Hickstead is a happy hunting ground for Guy, and if he returns this summer the crowd will no doubt be willing him on to a record fifth win.
New Hickstead Press Photographer Craig Payne has been appointed Hickstead Press Photographer for 2016. Some Sussex-based riders will have met Craig at one of the many shows or events that he covers in the area and over the last few years we have featured plenty of his pictures in Localrider Magazine. Craig first took photographs in the main ring at Hickstead, when he was just 19-years-old and still studying for his degree in Photography. Having returned once in the intervening years he is looking forward to bringing his own personal style to the images he captures at Hickstead this summer. 42 Localrider JUNE 2016

Clicker Foundation Course with Becky Chapman at Russells Equestrian Centre, New Place, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ
Sunday 28th and Bank Holiday Monday 29th August 2016 Would you like to improve: Communication * Connection * Performance * Long-term soundness * Emotional self-control * Rapport *Motivation and “availability” on the ground & under saddle? This course is the ideal introduction to clicker training. Whether you are already convinced that Clicker Training is the way forward, or whether you are sceptical and uncertain, but sense that there might be a means to train your horse without the requirement to: Punish, Coerce or Escalate Pressure. Train happy, confident, go anywhere, do anything horses. The course runs over two days and participants are provided with extensive handouts as part of their course fee. Train with Becky Chapman
In 2005 Becky Chapman ABRSTC, BHSInt’T, NLP Master Practitioner, Instructor of Functional Patterns, Senior Biomechanics Coach opened Ashen Equestrian Centre in East Anglia, a haven for horse-owners who want to learn in a welcoming environment. Becky’s training is based on Jaak Panksepp’s book “The Archaeology of the Mind”, which is based on the seven emotional systems found in most mammalian brains. Becky said: “We avoid putting people and their horses in the emotions of Panic, Fear or Rage, but focus on Seeker and Play systems. The Seeker system is activated when a healthy animal explores its environment looking for resources. Whereas Play animals need social engagement, which is manifested in play.”
Russells Equestrian Centre Last winter Becky taught a two day posture and mobility course at Russells Equestrian Centre. The focus of the course was improving riders’ posture and mobility, while reducing their pain post injury/surgery using myofascial release and corrective exercises. Becky said: “Russells Equestrian Centre is a family run business, which was founded in 1974 by the present day owner Carol Boulton and is run in partnership with her daughter Verity Tidmarsh.” Carol (left) has over 40 years of experience within the equine industry and is one of the most qualified riding school proprietors in Hampshire, holding the BHSSM, being a Chief Examiner for the ABRS, RWYM (Ride With Your Mind Coach) and a member of the National Equine Federation.
Verity (left) is an NLP Practitioner with an interest and qualifications in Sports Psychology and is one of the very few UK riding instructors selected to train with French Classical Master Philippe Karl in his “School of Legerete”. Becky said: “What makes Russells so special is Carol and Verity’s enthusiasm and love for teaching, along with their willingness to allow their clients and horses to thrive and learn in such a positive environment.”

ll proceeds from the Equi-Fun Club Charity Showing and Dressage Show were donated to the Sussex based charity, Oscar’s Wish Foundation. The charity is relatively new and was set up to provide support for parents, families and siblings who experience the loss of their baby and to raise awareness of the support needed when a precious baby’s life is lost. Breaking the silence of such a “taboo” subject is vital to ensure that parents, family and siblings get the support needed to understand and grieve their loss. The charity was set up by Gemma Kybert, a good friend of Equi-Fun Club’s organiser Rebecca, after the devastating loss of her baby boy. The charity touched many people’s hearts and the show was a huge success with an amazing turnout despite the arctic weather. Overall the club raised a whopping £1,134.81 from the show, a yummy cake sale and a guess the number of sweets competition. The showing classes were all well attended, with several being closed before the day. With two rings of Showing the judges had their work cut out choosing winners and overall champions. In the Oscar’s Wish Foundation ring, the Champion title went to William Harris and his super pony, Prince Naz. William is an RDA rider and despite the freezing conditions smiled for the whole day and it was a unanimous decision to award them the Championship. Over in the Equi-Fun ring Elsie-Mae Batchelor had a fantastic day, taking home several rosettes and the Championship title on her pony, Pepsi. Indoors the dressage competition was also incredibly popular with tests running all day. The standards were incredibly high and class winners included, Holly Bishop riding Peppermint Cream, Ellie Prowse on Mango and Kate Linabury on Whiskey. Ellie Prowse also walked away with the prize for the highest percentage of the day with a fantastic 73.4% in the Prelim 12 class. The Equi-Fun Team would like to thank everyone for supporting the show and giving so generously to a wonderful charity and helping them carry out their amazing work. JUNE 2016 Localrider 67

Weighty
Issues
Words by Kate Hore RNutr (Animal), Nutritionist for NAF
I
n recent times there has been a growing problem in the equine world, and “growing” is the right word, as we see ever expanding girth measurements. Naturally equines lose condition over harsh winters, arriving at spring looking lean, even poor, and spend summer fattening up for the next winter. While most of us would agree nature’s way isn’t ideal for us or our horses, the modern approach of stabling, rugging and feeding plenty of good grub is causing a major problem. Horses and ponies are arriving into summer looking in as good condition as ever – and then they get the grass to eat. The result? A huge increase in equine obesity and it’s generally recognised to be one of the biggest health issues in horses and ponies in the UK today.
Laminitic Problems
The health implications for overweight animals are many, some with long term, serious issues. The best known is probably laminitis, an extremely painful, sometimes fatal, condition of the laminae within the hooves. However, although laminitis is seen in the hooves, it should be considered a metabolic condition and weight and diet are the key contributors to triggering it. Once a horse or pony has had laminitis it is likely to always be prone to a reoccurrence, so this becomes a lifelong concern for the owner. However, laminitis is by no means the only condition linked to excess weight. It stands to reason that if the horse is carrying more than he should then this will put additional stress on the joints. With additional pressures on the lungs and heart also, carrying excess weight can easily impact on a horse’s performance and ability to work to his best. Even hormonal problems can be linked to your horse gaining those extra pounds, so if your moody mare is a little too curvy putting her on a controlled diet plan may help.
Equine Diet Plan
I’m often asked how owners can implement an equine diet plan. Firstly, make sure you are monitoring your horse’s weight. When you see a horse every day subtle changes can be missed, so take a record once a week and make a note of it. Weigh tapes can be inaccurate, however if used by the same person at the same time of day each week they will give you a good guide of any changes. Most weigh tapes also show centimetres, and it’s worth noting the mid-neck circumference, which is a good indicator of excess fat in equines. In those prone to weight gain excesses are typically laid down in pads on the tailhead, the shoulders and, particularly the crest of the neck – which is why that mid-neck circumference is such a useful reading. Adequate exercise will help to burn those calories, and maintain a healthy weight. Ensure the exercise is suitable to your horse. If currently overweight and unfit then a two hour trot hack is likely do more harm than good. But overweight animals should be regularly exercised, and the level of that exercise gradually increased until they’re fully fit.
Limit Grazing
Growing grass, particularly in the pre-flower stage, is lush and relatively high in sugar. Therefore, it may be necessary to limit access to grazing. For those living out over summer bringing them into a small yard or stable during the day will get them off the grass, out of the sun and away from the flies. Sugar levels are lower in the grass overnight than during the day, another good reason for doing things this way round rather than stabling at night with daytime turnout. Strip grazing can also be useful, but it has the downside of limiting how much horses will naturally move around. Consider
fencing off a track around the field and positing the gate, water, salt lick, shelter etc around that track which encourage horses to keep moving, so keeping themselves fit. This is known as ‘Paddock Paradise’.
Vitamins & Minerals The problem with a restricted diet is that it is likely to be lacking in micronutrients. Vitamins and minerals are essential for health and vitality in all horses and ponies. Further than simply balancing the diet, choosing targeted herbal support of active metabolism will help the good do-er help themselves. Additionally, supplementary magnesium allows the cells to efficiently metabolise energy to support a healthy weight, in animals that otherwise would be prone to laying down fat pads. Anecdotally we see that when magnesium is supplemented into the diet of good do-ers a reduction is seen in the fat pads on the body, and the mid-neck circumference is a useful guide to that. Slim pellets from NAF combine naturally sourced vitamins and minerals, with targeted nutrients for supporting a healthy weight. Slim is provided as a concentrated, pelleted, form which makes it easy to feed to those horses and ponies that don’t require additional bucket feed. In conclusion the right balance of management, exercise and careful consideration of their diet will keep our horses in good condition, trim and fit for the work required of them.

Feeding for Laminitis & Weight Control
The wet warm weather we have experienced this spring has provided the perfect conditions for grass to keep growing. While the horses may eat down their field, keep an eye on your lawn at home each week to have a rough idea how much new grass is growing. Don’t take risks, if necessary restrict your horse’s grazing and seek advice from the feed helplines. Here we share news of products specifically designed for the good do’er.
Mollichaff HoofKind

It contains a balanced blend of oat straw, alfalfa, fibre pellets, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, biotin, trace elements and antioxidants. It can be fed in conjunction with a high quality forage such as High Fibre or Timothy HorseHage to horses and ponies that are in moderate to light work, resting or laminitic. For those horses and ponies in harder work, with increased energy requirements it can be fed with additional concentrates. www.horsehage.co.uk
New TopChop Zero from TopSpec is designed for horses and ponies that are overweight and need an exceptionally low-calorie source of mature forage. Horses and ponies can pick NEWLY LAU NCHED! away steadily at TopChop Zero when they no longer have access to grass or hay or even haylage. By doing this they will ensure a supply of fibre to the microflora in their hindgut during periods when otherwise there would be no forage supply e.g. from late evening until morning stables. This will be of huge benefit to the horse’s digestive health. It is made from British chopped oat straw with added apple flavour and mint to enhance palatability. An extremely low level of soya oil is sprinkled on to reduce the ‘fly-away’ nature of the product, while limestone is added to improve calcium levels. TopChop Zero (DE 4MJ/kg) is much lower in nutritional value than even very late-cut meadow hay (DE 7-8MJ/kg). www.topspec.com
Blue Chip Lami-light Balancer Feeding horses and ponies that are prone to laminitis a low calorie, low sugar, low starch feed balancer, such as Blue Chip Lami-light is the ideal way to ensure they receive the correct level of vitamins, minerals and nutrients on a daily basis. The whole cereal and molasses free formula combines PrimoVento, the respiratory supplement that includes garlic, menthol and eucalyptus and SoundHoof, the comprehensive hoof supplement including biotin and zinc. Also, a prebiotic is added to help remove harmful bacteria from the gut, ensuring good digestive health is maintained. www.bluechipfeed.com
Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer Baileys Lo-Cal balancer is ideal for providing the laminitis-prone with essential nutrients, without unwanted calories, and is simple to feed, alongside forage, to ensure the horse of pony is getting what they need. It is fed by the mug full and can be mixed with as much or as little low calorie Baileys Light Chaff as the owner chooses. When powdered supplements need mixing in too, soaked Speedi-Beet is a useful accompaniment to Lo-Cal balancer. One balancer mug of Speedi-Beet soaked with four mugs of water produces a Stubbs scoop-full for a horse to chew on but still provides fewer calories than a scoop of Light Chaff. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk
NAF Slim For those horses and ponies who live on fresh air, it can be a struggle to keep their weight under control. The obvious answer is to reduce their feed intake, however, this could result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This is where Slim comes into its own. Slim is a natural and highly palatable weight management supplement, designed to provide essential micronutrients to those individuals on a restricted diet. The unique blend of ingredients work in synergy with metabolism boosting marine extracts to provide essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all sourced from nature. Slim works to promote wellbeing for good do’ers while supporting healthy weight loss the natural way. Slim should be used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and suitable exercise regime. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
Equine America Lamigard TRT Lamigard TRT is a highly effective supplement for horses and ponies and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. Lamigard TRT will ensure your horse’s feet stay healthy all year round and will complement a careful feeding regime. Lamigard TRT contains powerful ingredients to help mop up excess free radicals which settle in the feet, supporting a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and providing nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition. www.equine-america.co.uk

FEED NEWS Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet is a highly nutritious micronized (cooked) beet pulp feed which provides an excellent source of digestible fibre and is suitable for laminitics. Due to its unique manufacturing process, Speedi-Beet can be soaked and ready to use in just 10 minutes and is extremely palatable. It is also starch free and unmolassed, making it 95% sugar free. Feeding Speedi-Beet before turnout can help stabilise the ingestion of sugars present in spring grass. Speedi-Beet is extremely versatile. It can be fed in small amounts to overweight horses as a carrier for a multivitamin and mineral supplement and in larger quantities to a poor doer for weight gain, or working horses that need extra energy. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
GASTRIC SUPPLEMENTS Equine America Progest Pro-Biotic Weight Gain Supplement The horse’s hind gut is full of bacteria which aids the breakdown and digestion of fibre. Stress from training, competition, a change in management, yard or food, can have a negative effect on this, reducing the horse’s ability to digest and absorb food correctly. Progest contains yeast products which aid the bacteria in the hind gut, optimising digestion and, therefore, increasing the nutrients gained from the food. Progest should also be given after any treatment with antibiotics as these will affect the population of hind gut bacteria. www.equine-america.co.uk
NAF GastriAid GastriAid is an advanced formula containing a unique blend of key ingredients to maintain gastric health, soothe the stomach wall and support the balance of pH levels within the gut. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
The Lifeforce Range from Alltech The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been tailored to meet the needs of horses at every stage of life from the early developmental stages as a foal, through the demands of competition, and well into retirement. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimize digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. Lifeforce Elite is specially designed for competition horses and those faced with stressful situations. It supports a healthy immune system, increases the availability of antioxidants and creates a healthy digestive environment. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
Horse and Pony Direct Digestive Supplement The Horse and Pony Direct Digestion Supplement uses high quality ingredients such as a live yeast probiotic to increase fibre digestibility and enhance nutrient absorption, whilst reducing the levels of acid in the hind gut. A prebiotic is also included to stimulate the growth of ‘good’ bacteria, which promotes an efficient and healthy digestive system as well as supporting optimum conditions for the absorption of nutrients. www.horseandponydirect.co.uk
OTHER FEED NEWS Mobility Horslyx Mobility Horslyx is a nutrient rich lick containing Glucosamine HCl, MSM and Omega Oils, all vital to support optimum joint function. The high specification vitamin, mineral and trace element package - which incorporates Vitamin C, Vitamin E and selenium supports the body’s ability to absorb the vital nutrients, helping maintain a strong immune system and promote overall health and vitality. An independent research study using gait analysis technology, proved that Mobility Horslyx improved stride length in stiff horses. Simple and easy to use, Mobility Horslyx offers horse owners a unique method of feeding for healthy joints, plus the opportunity to balance any deficiencies in their forage, grazing and hard feed. This includes the addition of Biotin, Methionine and chelated Zinc to promote healthy hooves. www.horslyx.com
NAF Five Star Magic Five Star Magic is a calmer with a difference. Rather than relying heavily on any one ingredient, this market leading synergistic blend combines bio-available magnesium with carefully selected herbal support, working together to promote confidence and concentration in all horses and ponies. Magic is available in a choice of formats to suit your horse’s needs. Magic Powder includes gut support for those horses that worry weight off, Liquid Magic contains the key nutrients in a readily available, fast acting solution, and Instant Magic provides an immediate use option for short term support when it really matters. When stress and anxiety is spoiling performance and rideability, feed Five Star Magic for a calm, relaxed horse and a cool, focused performance. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
Blue Chip Original Balancer Blue Chip Original is the ideal feed balancer for all horses and ponies and perfect for maintaining digestive health as it contains a comprehensive probiotic, which increases fibre digestibility and restores healthy bacterial balance in the gut. Also included are Nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, benefitting the diet by improving nutrient absorption, reducing lactic acid production and improving stamina. Both whole cereal and molasses free, the formula provides optimum levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to keep your horse healthy all year round. www.bluechipfeed.com
