Welcome A

s I sit at my desk looking out of the window, there is a definite feeling that autumn has arrived, the leaves are turning and the trees are laden with berries. Ever the optimist, I am hopeful of an Indian Summer, a few more warm, dry days in which to enjoy riding our horses, before the evenings draw in. The best way to cope with winter is by being prepared and we have some wonderful tips from Hannah Dyball to help you save time this winter (see page 14).

One of the most important things to remember when you are working outside is to keep warm and dry. Technical clothing has improved enormously over the last few years and we have been testing a brilliant range of garments this month (see page 33). Whether you ride all day every day or just spectate at the weekends we have some fantastic items to help keep you warm and dry. Layering is key and with some wonderful warm boots to choose from, we hope you will enjoy being outside this winter. We might be focusing on autumn, but this issue is still bursting with glorious summer show reports. As usual we have a wonderful mix of different disciplines, including endurance, driving, show jumping, showing and eventing, as well as some delightful photographs from Pony Club Camp. This month I have enjoyed a wonderful week at the Longines European Eventing Championships at Blair Castle in Scotland. With four riders from our area on the squad I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else. Two of them, Gemma Tattersall and Francis Whittington, were riding on their first senior team. Regular readers will know that we have followed Gemma and Francis ever since the first few issues of Localrider and it was a privilege to be there to support them. Pippa Funnell was riding her own, her mother Jenny Nolan and Ruth McMullen’s horse, Sandman 7 and Laura Collett was riding Grand Manoeuvre. We will bring you a full report in the next issue. Just before Blair I headed to Lincolnshire for the Landrover Burghley Horse Trials (see page 16). Michael Jung was a deserved winner and even more so since it has now been confirmed that he was competing with a broken leg. Locals didn’t disappoint with Christopher Burton finishing third on TS Jamaimo and fourth on Haruzac. Tina Cook finished best of the Brits on Star Witness in eighth and local owner, Vanessa Jamieson’s horse Wii Limbo ridden by Georgie Spence finished twelfth (co-owned by (Lucy Fleming & Benjamin Chittle). In just over a week I will be heading to Birmingham for the Horse of the Year Show. I know a lot of you have qualified, so lots and lots of luck and I hope you all win. Remember however well you do keep us posted with your news. Email fiona@localrider.co.uk

news The HoneyBuns set to Sweeten HOYS Finale This year’s Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) will be sweetened by the appearance of six divas with their larger than life performance. The HoneyBuns, from Britains Got Talent (BGT) fame, will be performing in the Andrews Bowen International Arena on Sunday evening as part of the finale. The HoneyBuns will be performing four songs to entertain the audience and help draw HOYS 2015 to a spectacular close. The girls’ positive attitude and bubbly personalities shine through as viewers witnessed on BGT earlier this year. The HoneyBuns were formed when all of the girls – Corrin, Jess, Jodie, Kate, Rosie and Sacha met at a slimming club and found they all had performing in common. The confident young ladies thought that by starting a girl group they could inspire others to be comfortable in their own skin and to believe in themselves. One member of The HoneyBuns, Corrin Knox, has a close affiliation with HOYS. Corrin is the daughter of HOYS commentator Carey Knox and has herself competed at the Show. Corrin used to ride and show ponies and has previously placed fourth at HOYS on her 12.2hh Cottrell Fanfare. Corrin is also a talented milliner and many of her creations were worn by competitors in HOYS Harness Horse and Pony of the Year Championship, including the 2014 winner, Jessie Howell. “We are thrilled to be performing at Horse of the Year Show in October, it is such a prestigious event with a very large and loyal audience and we can’t wait to be involved,” said the group. Tickets for HOYS 2015 (7th to 11th October) are now on sale. For show information, including the show timetable, and to book, visit www.hoys.co.uk or call 0844 581 8282.

Schöffel Countrywear

F

ounded in bavaria, Germany, in 1804, Schöffel prides itself on being the fabric of the countryside, having combined innovation and quality with a passion for impeccable styling for the past seven generations. Now run by Peter Schöffel, the 6th generation of the family, Schöffel focuses on the latest fabrics and techniques to produce the best clothing for the country customer, producing products that are lightweight, technical and, above all, comfortable. the success of the Schöffel country range started with the Ptarmigan shooting coat. It was originally designed incorporating the combined expertise of Asprey’s of New bond Street, Farlows of Pall Mall, James Purdey & Son of Mount Street and roxtons Sporting Ltd of Hungerford. Schöffel have refined and improved their product over the years and their array of styles on offer are now regarded as the definitive garments, with the classic shooting coat now fashioned with super lightweight Gore-tex® and high technology cordura® and Meryl® as the outer fabrics. the Schöffel country range has gradually expanded to include several styles of coats, jackets, fleeces and shirts, every style of which has been designed and manufactured to the highest standard. the ladies range in particular is designed specifically to fit the female form, whilst maintaining the essential features and a sporty cut. www.schoffel.co.uk Left: The Ptarmigan Shooting Jacket with Chatsworth Tweed

SolarHub’s Lighting Solution

F

or horse owners and riders facing the darker evenings ahead, Solar technology International has an invaluable new lighting solution. Previewed at this year’s betA International trade fair, where it won an Innovation Award, the SolarHub can bring light to areas where there is no mains power – whether a stable, field shelter or dimly lit yard. Farmers can also benefit by lighting outbuildings and, as an added benefit, the unit can be used to charge phones and other devices. the SolarHub 16 (retailing at £99.99) provides 16 sq m of mainsquality lighting, which can be doubled with the addition of an expansion pack (£39.99), while the SolarHub 64 (£199.99) covers a space of 64 sq m (or four smaller rooms), with a 32 sq m expansion pack available (£59.99). both are simple to fit and offer a complete lighting and power kit in one box – a high-efficiency solar panel with wall bracket, an advanced lithium battery hub and a super-bright LeD strip, plus cables. the solar panel, which collects enough energy during daylight to provide up to six hours of light every day of the year at the flick of a switch, has a fantastic 20-year warranty while the battery is covered for two years. there is also a horsebox fitting kit (£29.99) enabling light and power when travelling for competition. “We opted to use high-intensity LeD strips, as they are less likely to be damaged by curious horses than pendant lights,” said Solar technology International’s managing director, Adrian Williams. “LeD, battery and solar cell technologies have reached the level where we can offer realistic, affordable solutions for solar-powered lighting and appliances all year round for people in all walks of life.” The SolarHub can be bought online at www.solartechnology.co.uk

Verdo Horse Bedding Verdo Horse Bedding, the heat treated 100% virgin soft wood pellet bedding absorbs three times its own weight in liquid, the bedding created from the activated pellets becomes light and fluffy, unlike traditional bedding. Verdo ‘contains’ the wet as oppose to it sinking down through the bedding and along the floor, making more wet and more waste. This not only helps maintain a dry environment, but also helps reduces ammonia, which helps ensure that your horse is happier and healthier in the stable. Verdo Horse Bedding boasts a low dust content, making it the ideal choice for horses with compromised respiratory issues. It comes in compact, easy to store bags, which once a small amount of water is added to the bag, a regeneration process is activated and within approximately 15 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out into the stable to create a soft fluffy and dry bed. www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

Whicker Ultimate Riding Hat Liner The Ultimate Riding Hat Liner is a reusable liner for your riding hat, which has been designed to act as a barrier against sweat and odours permeating into your hat. It will fit 99% of riding hats, including those with removable, washable liners. The hydrophobic fabric is breathable, hypoallergenic and non-toxic. The liner is really soft and extremely thin and you won’t know it’s in your hat when you are wearing it and it will not damage your hat in any way. You can change it as often as you like but Whicker suggest replacing weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending upon your riding activity. Michele Green and Sarah Hocking came up with the idea for the product, as they were fed up of having smelly hair and smelly hats after riding. The pair thought that there must be other riders who have the same problem and set out to look at what was available on the market and decided to design our own. The business duo are extremely proud that everything is made and sourced within the UK and both product and packaging is fully recyclable. The Ultimate Riding Hat liner comes in packs of 5 and costs £9.99 per pack. Available from all good tack shops as well as at Your Horse Live on the 14th & 15th November. www.whicker.uk.com

CINDERELLA PONIES need stabling and transport to theatre daily over the Christmas period in the following areas Tunbridge Wells, Worthing, Southend & Manchester.

World Horse Welfare has highlighted a number of horses and ponies who have received few – if any – applications despite needing loving new homes World Horse Welfare runs the largest equine rehoming scheme of its kind in the UK, with more than 100 horses and ponies of all shapes, sizes, ages, types and capabilities on the scheme at any one time. Rehoming is core to World Horse Welfare’s work, giving the horses and ponies who have undergone rehabilitation the chance to reach their full potential and freeing up space in the charity’s Rescue and Rehoming Centres for the thousands of horses in desperate need of care. Could you offer a home to any of World Horse Welfare’s loneliest horses and ponies? Find out more about some of them below: DRIFTER is a very sweet five year-old cob mare standing at 12.3hh who was found with a group of other horses emaciated and forced to live in a 4ft deep quagmire. She is a sensitive girl but learns very quickly and will always try her hardest. She’s looking for an experienced home where she can continue her education and become a lovely riding pony. Drifter has been looking for a home since February 2014 and has had no recent applications. Drifter is at World Horse Welfare’s Norfolk Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Hall Farm. TWIZZLE is a gentle and caring 12 year-old Thoroughbred mare standing at 15.2hh who came into World Horse Welfare as a welfare case with her best friend, Clyde. Twizzle cannot be ridden so she is looking for a home where she can be a loyal companion to both other horses and her rehomer. She is very maternal and loves to have cuddles but has been looking for a home since March 2014 and has had no recent applications. Twizzle is at World Horse Welfare’s Norfolk Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Hall Farm. DIAMOND is a pretty 2 yearold pony standing at 13hh but still growing! She came into World Horse Welfare as a large welfare case and as she is only a baby she is looking for a home with an experienced rehomer who can continue her education with a view to becoming a wonderful child’s pony when she is mature enough. Diamond has a sweet and loving nature and is very willing to learn. She has been looking for a home since September 2014 and has only had one recent application. Diamond is at World Horse Welfare’s Norfolk Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Hall Farm. You can find out more about rehoming at: www.rehoming.worldhorsewelfare.org

news Nominations Open for Animal Charity Awards Petplan Equine one of the UK’s leading specialist equine insurance providers, is calling on the equine world to recognise the invaluable work of equine charities by nominating their favourite charity for the 2016 Petplan and ACDH Animal Charity Awards. Nominations Open on 5th October, 2015. The awards were launched in 2013 by Petplan in partnership with the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) to recognise the hard work, dedication and commitment of animal charities and not-for-profit organisations, their employees and volunteers. The Awards which have captured the hearts of animal lovers across the UK attracted no fewer than 5,371 nominations last year.

Stay safe this hunting season Have peace of mind out on the hunting field by investing in a Helite Air Shell Gilet from Treehouse Sporting Colours. This stylish Gilet fits neatly over the top of your hunting coat so no one will even know you’re wearing one. Made from a Tekseries soft shell outer, the material is windproof and waterproof and stretches to allow for outward expansion. It offers full body movement when not inflated, so you can follow hounds all day in comfort, safety and style. The Air Shell Gilet offers protection to the full length of the back and chest, as well as the sides and back of the neck. This greatly reduces the risk of whiplash and impact injuries in the event of a fall. It inflates outwards, allowing riders to wear it fitted and therefore offering a more flattering look. www.treehouseairjackets.co.uk

Once again there are three awards categories:

Animal Charity Team of the Year

Equine charities work tirelessly to provide a better life for horses, ponies and donkeys all over the UK and make a huge difference to the health and wellbeing of the animals they come into contact with. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a charity team that has worked together to make a positive change to the lives of animals.

Animal Charity Volunteer of the Year

Without volunteers all charities would struggle to survive as staff, resources and finances would be stretched to the limit. It takes a special person with real compassion towards animals to give up their free time on a regular basis. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a dedicated volunteer who shows a real commitment to an animal charity.

Animal Charity Employee of the Year

Staff are the backbone of any equine charity, covering all sorts of roles to ensure the smooth running of the organisation. It is down to their constant hard work that the charity can help animals in need. Petplan and ADCH are looking for a hard working employee who is passionate about their job, day in, day out and makes a difference to the rest of the staff and charity as a whole. The awards are for charities based in the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands. Among the equine charities nominated last year were Redwings Horse Sanctuary, HorseWorld, Racehorse Rescue Centre, Seven Acre Horse Sanctuary, Veteran Horse Welfare and Blue Cross. Three finalists for each category will be selected by an impartial and independent panel of key industry representatives and will be invited to attend the Petplan and ADCH Animal Charity Awards evening in May where the winners will be announced. “Petplan Equine works closely with equine charities throughout the UK and we see first-hand the dedication and commitment of the many employees and volunteers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of horses, ponies and donkeys,” said Isabella von Mesterhazy, Petplan’s Head of Marketing. “These awards are an opportunity for equine charity teams and workers to be honoured for their contribution to animal welfare in general and for their hard work to be recognised by a wider audience.” To nominate a charity team or individual who deserves to be recognised for their outstanding contribution to equine welfare go to www.petplan.co.uk/ charityawards. Nominations open on 5th October 2015 and close on 15th February 2016.

The Haddon Training British Grooms Awards 2015 Haddon Training became the new sponsor of the British Grooms Awards in 2014, presented at the annual British Breeders Awards Dinner in London. The volume of nominations received for these Awards was overwhelming and it highlighted the appreciation there is for the unsung heroes of the equine industry. Chris Hewlett, Managing Director of Haddon Training said: “I wanted to further develop the Grooms Awards in order to recognise more employees within the equine industry and to celebrate their achievements, we have created two additional new awards.” The two new awards are The Haddon Training Yard Manager Award and The Haddon Training Apprentice Award. These new awards reflect the range of nominations received in 2014, and aim to recognise employees both at the beginning of their career path with horses, and the experienced managers of the industry. The categories and criteria for the Haddon Training British Grooms Awards 2015 are: The Haddon Training British Grooms Award: Open to all grooms in the equestrian industry; those working in competition yards, riding schools, welfare centres, trekking centres and studs will be equally eligible and can include self-employed and full-time grooms. A runners up award will also be given in this category. news Did your horse ever try to make ‘a good impression on you’? Every rider is exposed to being trodden on by a horse and the experience can be very painful. More people get injured by being trodden on that any other type of accident with horses. Accidents can happen in a flash of a second, often resulting in a badly bruised foot or broken bones. There are all kinds of risks at the stables, nevertheless you often see people wearing flimsy trainers or rubber riding boots. Yet a properly constructed boot with toe protection especially designed for use in the equestrian environment would eliminate this exposure. All Equitector riding boots have built in steel toecap that cannot be felt nor seen. When wearing a pair of these boots, you would not know that you are wearing a steel toe capped boot, nor would anyone else. The inbuilt protection is there just in case of the unforeseen. The steel toecap can withstand 1000 kilo of pressure and with a supportive strong sole you are protected on firm and soft ground. www.equitector.com

etplan, the UK’s largest pet insurance provider and its specialist equine sister-brand Petplan Equine, are delighted to announce that nominations opened for the Petplan Veterinary Awards on 1st September 2015. Returning for a 16th year, the Veterinary Awards acknowledge the importance of animals in the lives of British people, recognising members of the veterinary community who have gone ‘above and beyond’ in their daily roles. Petplan is inviting horse and pet owners across the UK to nominate members of their veterinary practices who they feel are deserving of one of these coveted awards. Petplan Equine’s Head of Marketing, Isabella von Mesterhazy commented: “At Petplan Equine, our customers are constantly telling us remarkable stories about veterinary staff who have provided vital support to their horses, often going to extraordinary lengths to do so. The Veterinary Awards provide an opportunity for owners to say thank you to their practice and the members of the team.” The Petplan Veterinary Awards capture the public’s imagination and last year Petplan received a staggering 15,101 nominations for practice managers, nurses, vets, support staff or veterinary practices. Winter workouts with Equiami

Lungeing can help maintain and improve your horse’s fitness, whilst saving you time and energy during the short, dark days, but how can you make it interesting? Horses, like children, thrive on routine, yet need variety in their work to prevent boredom. There are many things that you can include in a lunge session to keep your horse interested in his work and listening to you. It is also important says Dr. Hilary Bentley to change the order of things and change the ‘menu’ as often as you can, including starting on a different rein each time. Using a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi gets your horse working over his back very effectively. The warm-up and stretch down phases must remain as these are physiologically important for the horse. The middle ten minutes of the session can include pole work in different formats. Dr Hilary Bentley says: “We often use poles placed like the hands of a clock on the circle at 3, 6, 9 & 12 which encourages activation of the inside hind leg. A square of poles of about 15m can be used to work around and to spiral inside for those fit enough. Raising one end of the poles increases the hind leg activity enormously. These exercises help to activate the inside hind leg, keep the horse focused and attentive whilst improving suppleness.” Incorporating some of these ideas along with lots of transitions and rein changes add interest whilst improving balance, engagement, core strength, lightness and swing. www.equiami.com 12 Localrider october 2015

A Healthy Coat

Most working horses are clipped for practicality in the winter

Essential fatty acids (EFAs): Omega-3s help boost immunity to allergies, while omega-6 fats help fight resistance to skin infections; both help improve coat condition.

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

I

t’s almost clipping time, but there’s still time to prepare your horse’s coat to make sure it is in tip top condition before autumn and winter set in. Environmental changes prompt the horse to grow a coat, no matter what climate he lives in, warm or cold; however, for working horses, the environment becomes too hot, and makes it harder for the horse to cool down after exercise, so most of us clip for practicality. You may like to give the horse a good groom with a rubber curry comb in the days preceding the clip, so the grease comes to the surface and can be groomed away, or lifted off with a damp cloth or sponge. We have heard that some people like to spray their horse with Cowboy Magic’s Super Bodyshine before clipping, as this will help the clippers easily glide through coarse or thick hair and help prevent the blades becoming blunt or overheating the clippers. After clipping, I like to wash down the horse with Cowboy Magic’s Concentrated Rosewater Shampoo with Silk Conditioners - it is easy to use, and is formulated to gently clean and condition the skin. It is also a deep conditioner, as it contains panthenol and silk protein to penetrate the hair and deep condition the skin, preventing the dryness that can occur after clipping. The product’s silk molecules reflect prism light, giving the hair a natural shine. I like to remember this sage advice from Robert Oliver, showing guru: “There’s only a week’s difference between a good or bad clip.” If your lines are uneven or your clip needs a tidy up, forget about it for a week, and then re visit it. Once you are not fixated on a particular spot or any uneven areas, the clip will look much better. Visit www.worldwidetack.com for a range of grooming products including the Cowboy Magic range.

10 Clipping Tips 1. Choose a well lit stable with a non-slip floor, and remove all objects that your horse could stumble over, such as water buckets or haynets.

Maintain coat health by looking out for therse nutritional ingredients

Protein: Protein is a key element of all body tissue and helps boost skin condition and elasticity. The amino-acids methionine and lysine are beneficial. Lecithin: Lecithin supplies phospholipids, major components of cell membranes. Lecithin is an important ingredient for helping maintain healthy skin.

Some people spray their horse with Super Bodyshine before clipping

Rosewater Shampoo helps prevent the dryness that can occur after clipping

Vitamins and minerals: These compounds play a major part in coat health – for example, zinc deficiency may cause delayed hair growth. Biotin, and Vitamins A and B6 help boost coat health.

Choose a type of clip that suits your horse’s workload

2. You should ideally wear a helmet, in case the horse kicks out while you are bending down and clipping his under-carriage. 3. Make sure the yard area where you’re clipping is quiet and free of distractions, your horse will stay calmer. 4. Ask the vet about sedation if safety is an issue. 5. With mains powered clippers, always use a circuit breaker. 6. Get your blades sharpened, pre-clip - sharp blades give a comfortable clip for your horse, as they will not drag on the hair and will produce a closer clip. 7. If your horse isn’t comfortable with clippers, start with the smaller, quieter ones before going to the larger, noisier body clippers. 8. During the clipping session, lubricate the blades every so often, to keep them cool. 9. Prepare a small brush or old toothbrush to clean out hair and dirt from the blade teeth and small parts of the clippers as you go along. 10. Overlap each clipping stroke, to avoid ‘tram lines’. While clipping the horse’s body, the clippers must run flat over the coat. OCTOBER 2015 Localrider 13

Top Time-saving Tips for Winter Words by Author is Hannah Dyball, VioVet Equine Specialist

C

aring for horses during winter presents challenges because of shorter days and poorer weather. Trying to juggle work, home life and horse care is difficult at the best of times, let alone when it’s dark by 4pm and blowing a gale outside. But forward planning can help you save time and energy and put some of the enjoyment back into winter horse care. If you plan your week in advance when you have more time to spare, there will be less to think about come Monday when you are up early and home after dark. So, what are VioVet’s top time-saving tips for equestrians this winter? Try these few simple measures to get winter-ready.

1

Organise your yard and tack room at the start of each week to make looking for equipment and preparing feeds much easier. No one wants to be hunting around for hoof picks and brushes in the dark. Consider attaching brightly-coloured ribbons to make them easier to spot in low light.

2

Make a list of all your essential items and where they are kept, and put it somewhere obvious for everyone to see. This will remind your fellow yard mates where to return things to if they happen to borrow them. A general checklist of your daily routines will benefit anyone coming to help out on your yard.

3

Bulk prepare. When it comes to your horse’s diet, hay needs to be on constant offer whether your horse is stabled (to avoid colic) or turned out (if grazing is

particularly sparse). Why not bulk prepare hard feeds and haynets? Note: if you add sugar beet or water to feeds, or if you soak haylage, don’t do this in advance as the foods will spoil.

dirt from your horse’s coat, as this will be much easier to keep clean. If you can afford it, invest in an additional turnout rug so you can rotate them.

8

Prepare for the big freeze. In cold weather, buckets and troughs can quickly freeze over or get sullied with mud and grass. Carting heavy buckets of water across an icy yard isn’t the quickest or most pleasant job in the world if the taps (and your fingers) are frozen. Wrap plastic bags around taps and padlocks so they’re less exposed and less likely to freeze.

Purchase a rug that extends up the neck to keep your horse warmer and cleaner. Grooming can be a bit of a nightmare come winter as, no sooner have you brushed the mud off, your horse is covered in it again. Coat shines are a great way of preventing mud from sticking to the coat and maintaining your horse’s condition. These can also be applied to the legs to keep off mud.

5

9

Plaiting prevents tangling. Forget struggling to comb your horse’s mane and tail every day and, instead, plait it to prevent tangling. When you do want to groom it, you’ll have a much easier job on your hands. It might only be a simple measure, but it’s a great way of saving time!

6

We also have qualified vets and ESQP’s on-hand to answer your queries and offer advice on all areas of horse care, so, if you have a question, call us on: (01582) 842 096.

4

Store water in dustbins. Make sure there is plenty of water on offer by filling plastic dustbins rather than small buckets. Do this with a hose whenever you have time on your hands to make the water last longer. To stop it freezing over, place a football in the water. The bobbing motion will effectively keep the water moving so that it is less likely to freeze. Consider deep littering. If your horse is routinely stabled, mucking out can be a time-consuming chore. Consider deep littering to save you time, energy and stable bedding. Providing there is still enough straw and wood shavings for your horse to rest on comfortably, there’s no need to panic if you haven’t the time to muck out everything.

7

Your horse’s wardrobe. When it comes to your horse’s bulky stable/ turnout rug, you don’t want to be washing it too often. Think about putting a light summer sheet beneath it to collect all the

Coping with dogs In this issue the South East Parelli Team provide advice for a reader struggling to get her mare to relax near dogs. Q

My mare is scared to death of dogs. If someone’s walking a dog near us, or we have to pass a house with dogs, she’s practically out of control and is really anxious. I’ve only had her a few months, so I don’t know if she had a bad past experience – help!

A

What a tricky situation to be in, how many dogs are you likely to come across in your average hack out? Many I would guess. Having a horse that is that scared of them could easily become a dangerous scenario for you and her very quickly if it hasn’t already. She may have had a bad past experience, but what she needs is for you to be a good leader for her so that she can overcome her fear of dogs. As Linda says, it’s not about the... in this case it’s the dog. Picture this, you are asked to walk past something that you are terrified of, you think it’s capable of eating you, not just hurting you but you are its

dinner. How would you feel? Would you stick around for long? What if you were with someone who knew how to help you get through that situation and to still be alive at the end of it. That would feel really good, you’d have a lot of trust in that person and you’d probably say yes to whatever they asked of you because you knew that they will keep you safe from harm and you’d always be ok. That’s how your horse is feeling. She’s scared for her life and what this dog might do to her and she’s looking out for her own safety, no matter what that may take. What you can do to help her is to have an understanding of her needs, have communication with her so that in those times of uncertainty she’ll look to you for guidance and leadership. That’s where Horsenalities and the Seven Games is going to become very valuable to you. Knowing

about Horsenalities is going to help you to have an understanding of the type of horse that she is; is she a thinker or a reactor? Does she run or freeze? This information gives you information that can then help you have a clear picture of what kind of leader she needs and what strategies will help her and your relationship with her. The Seven Games gives you the language so that you have communication with her both on the ground and on her back. Once you have the Seven Games going then you’ll notice that your relationship will change and discover that it’s not about the dog, it’s about your relationship. A passion

for bitting Words by Lucy Nicholas

I am passionate about bitting! I love a quote from Benjamin Latchford’s book The Loriner, published in 1883; he wrote: “The horse’s mouth and temper may be compared to a lock, so made that only one key will fit it.” These were sage words, in as far as each horse’s bit should be chosen to fit not just mouth conformation, but also the horse’s temperament. Bitting horses has a long heritage across the world. There is evidence of bit wear on horses’ teeth found in the Ukraine circa 4000 BC. Primitive bridles that used deer antlers as cheek pieces and animal hide or sinew for mouthpieces have also been found at sites on the Black Sea. (Source: Institute for Ancient Equestrian Studies.) Metal bits are thought to have originated around 1500 BC, and France’s Louvre holds examples of horse bits from 8th century Luristan [western Iran]. Because of the requirements to move quickly and submit to their masters, ancient war-horses across many civilisations were ridden in curb bits with high ports that put pressure on the roof of the mouth and also increased curb leverage and poll pressure. Over time, ‘families’ of bits were developed including snaffles, curbs and gags, and loriners focussed on not just the actions of the mouthpieces, but of the cheek pieces. Today, there are many hundreds of different bits and bitting systems available, meaning we have the widest choice of bits available to us that the industry has ever seen.

Above: the right bit could optimise your riding and performance

Ancient war-horses across many civilisations were ridden in curb bits

Left: Any bit or bridle is only as successful as the rider implementing it

Hiring a bit Hiring a bit is a great way to see if your horse is suited to a particular bit. We offer bit hire - customers purchase the item as normal, but have the option to return the bit after trying it for 14 days (starting from the day after the parcel is signed for, and finishing on the day the parcel is sent back to us) for a refund, less the hire charge. When hiring a bit, customers initially pay the full cost of the bit, and we then send out either a new bit (75% of the time), or a previously hired bit, if there is one available. We offer bit hire at www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk

Bitting materials

Have you given much thought to the material used in your horse’s bit? We are spoiled for choice today with some lovely modern materials. Bitting really has advanced in recent years, with such a lot of science behind the materials used. Here are the main materials you will find in your tack room: ● Stainless steel is the most common metal used for making horse bits, as it is very durable - good-quality steel doesn’t oxidise. ● Sweet iron is a good modern choice for a horse bit - it oxidises easily, encourages salivation, helps bit acceptance, and has a comfortable feeling and slightly sweet taste. ● Copper wears more quickly than stainless steel and sweet iron, although it does conduct more heat than harder materials. It encourages salivation, but sometimes to excess! ● Aurigan bits are nickel-free, which is good for sensitive horses, and use a copper alloy and include a blend of copper, silicon and zinc. ● Sensogan - (see below: ‘Sensogan - the new kid on the block’) is also good for sensitive horses, and includes copper alloy plus silicon, zinc and manganese.

Sensogan - the new kid on the block We are pleased to see a new range of bits from Sprenger that utilise a new material called Sensogan, a development of Sprenger’s famous Aurigan metal blend. What I like about this range is that Sensogan has added manganese (in addition to zinc, silicon and copper), which enhances oxidisation and muscle relaxation. The manufacturers say that the balance of metals used results in a smoother and more regulated process of oxidation; their tests show a very positive influence on the horse’s satisfaction, motivation and willingness to perform. Although these advanced bits are comparatively pricey, I think for sensitive-mouthed horses, they are a good investment. OCTOBER 2015 Localrider 31

Beautiful Breeches FEATURE

If you struggle to find breeches to compliment your curves (or lack of them) then help is at hand, with super stylist and personal shopper Alison Nye-Warden MD of premium online retailer Dressage Deluxe. Alison said: “Breeches are probably one of the biggest areas of contention amongst riders with comfort and fit being key factors, but also riders wanting to look and feel good in them in and out of the saddle. Here are my top tips for choosing the right styles.”

High-waisted: These are great for hourglass figures and compliment curves. They naturally sit higher, with more room around the hip area and are great for elongating legs. Ideal for wearing under cut away front competition jackets, this style of breeches also works well with those of us with larger derrieres.

Hipster: These sit slightly on the hip and are great for slim and more boyish figures. They compliment snake hips and look great with a fashion belt to add interest and draw attention to your slender shape

Jean Style: These can range from hipsters through to mid waist but just like your own real pair of jeans, shop about to get the style that suits you!

Classic Cut: These sit naturally on waistline and are a comfortable option for most shapes. Not hugely flattering for curvier shapes but a classic cut that many women like. Just as fashion brands vary in sizing, the same goes for equestrian clothing; so don’t be put off by having to up a size in a particular brand. It is better for your breeches to look and fit well, than be bursting out of them and feeling uncomfortable. Pattern and detail on casual breeches can also compliment or curse your curves. To show off a ‘bootalicious’ bottom, choose embroidery or embellishment on pockets and to slim down legs, choose breeches with clever ‘go fast’ stripes that run vertically down the outside, to shave off inches. Contrast seats again can slim down bottoms or gives a nice shape to a less than full bottom, so shop around to find styles that suit you.

Don’t forget if you still need some style advice, our personal shopper service is totally free and could end up saving you a fortune. All you need to do is drop me a line at: personalshopper@dressagedeluxe.co.uk Include a brief outline of what you are struggling to find, your body measurements and full length photograph of yourself dressed in fairly body hugging clothing and I will help you find the perfect breeches or competition jacket to suit your shape and build. Laura jumping her homebred mare Nessa at Felbridge

Trust our Horse Insurance

Laura Powell writes...

The last month has been fantastic competition wise. I really feel like it’s all coming back together and I have a nice small string of horses again. Alf has come back better than ever. He is so much more settled in his brain, which has improved his rideabilty no end. After jumping numerous double clears at Pyecombe British Showjumping I got a bit more competitive when we went to Felbridge. He responded, but kept his head and we came fourth out of 70 in the 1.05m Open. Quite an achievement for me, who normally likes to just jump a steady clear. Nessa also jumped a super round in the Discovery just having a fence – it’s all so easy for her, but her body is holding her back. She has grown again and currently resembles a croup high ewe necked upside down horse. Despite being fit she has just started telling me she isn’t comfortable in her body. This culminated at Firle and I should have read the signs and pulled her before the event as it resulted in a horrendous dressage and show jumping. So that made the decision final she is now on holiday in a massive field full of grass growing until Christmas. This is the first real break she’s had, so it is well over due.

Fantastic Firle

Meanwhile Alf was on form at Firle. I thought he did a super dressage - although the judge didn’t agree! Even though we only had 10 minutes to spare before the test, as he pulled one of his huge egg bar shoes off in the warm-up so we had to dash to the farrier before I could continue. After a fence show jumping (which was a little frustrating given his show jumping form) we still ended up eighth. Firle is such a fantastic event everyone is so helpful. The ground was perfect and it was nice to see the cross-country courses true to their level and clever course building in the show jumping (without the course being complex), all meaning it was by no means a dressage competition. What was really nice was that even tenth place received engraved glass prizes. Thankyou Firle.

End of season events

Next I am heading to Munstead with the Jumbo mare, Meg. This will be a real test as when we last went to the unaffilaited in the spring she was somewhat naughty at the cross-country start (to put it mildly). Hopefully she will show she is a reformed character. The new boy Scrumpy is also doing the BE90 which I’m really excited about, as he is such a cool dude. Then the same weekend Alf is heading up to Blenheim International Horse Trials to do the Eventers Challenge that he qualified for at Eridge. We are so lucky to be competing at this fantastic venue. The other horse in the ‘string’ is Whoopi. She’s now clipped, fit and ready to start autumn hunting. Something she was bred to do, by the former Master of the Essex Farmers. She will be sold when a fantastic home comes along, but until then I get the lovely job of taking her hunting!

Winter Skin Care Tips from Robinson Animal Healthcare

Robinson Animal Healthcare continues to lead the way amongst equine healthcare specialists. A successful manufacturer of a wide range of quality, innovative wound care and first aid products, the company’s wealth of knowledge stems from more than 170 years experience, since the founding company Robinson and Sons first started in 1839. Here they offer readers ten top tips on winter skin care...

1

Management – most winter skin conditions result from a dirty coat which provides the ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive. Keep coats as clean and as dry as possible with suitable rugs or shelter and regular grooming.

2

Hygiene - rugs, tack, grooming and stable equipment can spread contagious skin conditions or repeatedly re-infect the same horse unless you eliminate infectious agents by disinfection and cleaning (veterinary surgeons can advise on suitable products that will not harm your horse).

3

Correct Nutrition – poor diets, especially those lacking in essential vitamins and minerals, can have dire effects on the skin health. Consult an equine nutritionist if you suspect current dietary intake is not aiding a healthy skin and coat.

4

Vigilance – check horses daily for signs that a skin condition may be imminent. Thick winter coats can easily mask problems such as mud fever, rain scald, ringworm and lice.

5

Prevention – if it is known that an individual horse is prone to certain winter skin conditions then preventative measures should be taken. For example, horses prone to mud fever may benefit from a barrier cream or regular treatments with an anti-bacterial cleansing wash such as Activ Wash.

6

Clipping and Trimming – it may help to trim or clip horses coats during winter to make them easier to keep clean and dry. Skin problems will often be more evident when coats are clipped and horses in work will be more comfortable as they will sweat less and dry off quicker.

For more information on the Robinson Animal Health Care range please contact them on 01909 735000 or visit www.robinsonhealthcare.com

The licensed veterinary poultice from Robinson Animal Healthcare

7

Treatment – a skin condition must be correctly identified in order for treatment to be as effective as possible. If you are in any doubt or if the condition has appeared for the first time always seek advice from your veterinary surgeon.

8

Washing – continually washing and bathing horses can weaken the skin structure removing essential oils. This can lead to the skin becoming chapped and sore and irritated by particles of soil, leaving it more susceptible to infection. Avoid excessive bathing during winter; grooming will remove dirt and scurf without stripping the coat of its natural oils.

9

Products - anti-bacterial washes can be used prophylactically on susceptible animals or to treat existing skin conditions caused by bacterium. They will help to remove any encrusted debris such as scabs.

10

Healing - removing scabs carefully using an anti-bacterial cleansing wash (if bacterium is the causative organism) will remove any existing bacteria and dirt held in the scabs allowing new clean scabs to form and heal. It is very important that any sponges that are used in the washing process are clean and that the area washed is rinsed well with clean water and then dried thoroughly.

Winter Worries With winter approaching, Han Van De Braak, MD of Aloeride, the aloe vera supplement for horses, discusses three elements, which are commonplace during the winter months, so you can plan ahead this year…

S

ure enough, snow makes obstacles to trip over, or to fall into, and ice makes surfaces unpredictable, but it differs little from mud when it comes to slipping or puddles when it comes to stepping into the unknown. Every horse owner knows to walk their fields looking for any potential hazards. On the whole there are only three elements which can signal trouble this coming season: temperature, moisture and nutrition.

Temperature

Temperature is an interesting one, because cold weather requires horse owners to feed their horse in order to keep the core temperature up. In rough terms, for every degree below minus 8°celcius your horse requires an additional one percent of energy in his diet. Rather than feeding concentrates, increase the amount of forage as metabolically this generates more energy and the consequential increase in microbial fermentation further helps to keep your horse warm. How you stop your horse from losing core temperature is another matter.

Moisture

It has been estimated that a horse with a healthy winter coat, that stays dry, will be comfortable at temperatures down to minus 8° celcius. If your horse has access to shelter it can tolerate temperatures nearer minus 40° celsius. Keeping a coat dry is not about keeping the outer coat dry necessarily; it is about keeping the inner short hair coat dry, because that is where your horse traps a column of air to work as the isolator that creates the ‘tog factor’. When you rug your horse, you compress the coat and in doing so, you make the air layer thinner. If the tog value of the rug doesn’t equal or improve on your horse’s coat’s own value then you haven’t helped.

Benefits of Aloe Vera

Aloeride - support for stabled horses

Whether or not the coat of your horse can keep the hair dry and what ‘tog value’ it gives to your horse’s skin, much depends on sebum. Aloeride being a whole leaf aloe vera contributes greatly to sebum production, which can help support your horse’s natural defence again the winter weather. Rugs must also fit properly to avoid the chance of injury, such as wrenched legs or missing shoes, because of overly long hanging surcingle’s and straps. Foals and yearlings also love to scratch their ears with a hind hoof, which can get caught in a rug so keep an eye out for this.

Nutrition

Finally, giving your horse plenty of roughage in his diet is key, as is providing access to clean, “warm” (45° - 64° F) water, so make sure that you add a little warm water to your horse’s water to ensure that he is keeping his fluids up during any cold spells this winter.

Keeping the Stabled Horse Happy

The Likit Boredom Breaker in use

Likit Products’ consultant nutritionist, Dr Derek Cuddeford BSc, MSc, PhD, offers some timely advice on the benefits of environmental enrichment for stabled equines.

H

orses are frequently kept isolated in a loosebox, with little interaction with other animals and limited access to the outdoors. As a result they don’t get the chance to perform normal horse-like behaviour, which may result in stress or boredom that leads to vices, such as crib-biting, box walking and wind-sucking. Nowadays, it is understood that play behaviour is of great importance to an animal’s well-being and, as a result, we are actively encouraged to enrich the stable environment. Allowing stabled horses or ponies to play with ‘toys’ increases the diversity of their environment, thereby reducing the seeming monotony of life in the stable. Likit Products are specially designed to relieve stable boredom by providing environmental enrichment. Alternating the different Likit products and flavours, as well as the position of the toys can further help to keep the horse stimulated to alleviate boredom and stress.

The Likit Snak-aBall encourages the horse to stretch and use muscles from poll to tail.

Contact Likit on 01655 750523 or visit www.likit.co.uk for more information, plus top tips on making the stable a more interesting place for your horse.

WIN! Kensington Rugs Platinum Medium Turnout When it comes to choosing a warm rug, weight doesn’t always dictate warmth especially in relation to the Kensington Rugs ‘Platinum Collection’ available exclusively through online retailers Shadow Horse. This new generation of rug with intelligent fabric technology and lightweight filling ensures that it can be worn comfortably in both hot and cold temperatures from -6°C to 22°C dependent on which of the two versions you choose. Both the fully lined detachable neck cover and rug is styled in a clever, 1680 Denier Ballistic Nylon outer shell fabric. This 100% waterproof, outer shell is threaded through with a Teflon and Lami-Cell coating, which helps keep the rug clean and breathable whilst protecting and extending the life of the rug. The rug’s filling is ‘Hollow-Fibre Fill’ which gives the impression of a much denser insulation without the associated weight. This and the rug’s ‘CoolPlus’ lining draws excess heat away from the horse’s skin, helping to acclimatise your horse and wick away any moisture. The removable insulated belly-band significantly helps to keep the horse warm without having to use a neck cover. The SureFit design allows for easy movement of the shoulders and it is contoured to the shape of the horse to allow for all shapes and sizes with minimal risk of rubbing. Colour: Teal with Black & Silver trim Sizes: 5’9”to 7’3” RRP: £155 www.shadowhorse.co.uk

**GOOD HOOD**

Made from a four way stretch lycra with bound elastic edges for a comfortable close fit. The fully adjustable belly and chest straps keeps the head and neck hood in place. It washes well and dries quickly. This special design has some unique features for comfort and safety. There are two wide noseband openings to make the hood easier to pass over the face. The bottom noseband passes over the top of nose and the top noseband then passes between the ears and eyes and slips over the nose, covering the bottom noseband piece. The two nosebands are then fastened together under the jaw with the small velcro strap. This keeps the whole head piece in place and away from the eyes.

WITH UNIQUE SAFETY FEATURES 4 way comfy stretch lycra. Wider face opening, less intimidating for the horse.

Self righting, centralized nose pieces, keeps hood away from eyes.

t is always important to remember that it is not natural for a horse to cough, and if it does so, it is indicative of a problem. If your horse does have a runny nose, and / or a cough, this is the time that you must be ultra-careful about dust in the environment. All horses need a healthy respiratory system to perform to their maximum ability so you might be shocked to know that 80% of horses stabled part of the time have some airway inflammation, even if they are asymptomatic; this can have a detrimental effect on their performance. In terms of supplying ad libitum feed, which is essential to satisfy the horse’s innate desire to chew and maintain good digestive function, hay is the best fodder to feed. However, even high quality hays are high in respirable particles. These particles form the dust that you cannot see (less than 5 µm in size), and have a 50% chance of being inhaled deep into the lungs and causing the respiratory disorder Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO). While soaking will reduce this dust it leaches out valuable nutrients and can actually increase the bacterial content of the hay, thereby dropping the hygienic quality of the fodder.

Respiratory Health Advice By Dr Meriel Moore-Colyer Dean of the School of Equine Management and Science & Principal Lecturer in Equine Science at RAU and Scientific Consultant to HAYGAIN.

Mucking out, filling hay nets, and brushing the yard should all be done when the horse is out of the stable. Keeping the stable itself clear of dust is paramount. Bed on dust-free shavings and steam all its forage. It is the breathing zone, where your horse has its nose, and through steaming is the only proven method for reducing dust in fodder and so reducing the amount of dust your horse inhales during feeding. Research at Royal Agricultural University has shown that steaming at the high temperatures achieved in HAYGAIN steamers kills all the bacteria and mould and reduces the respirable particle content by >95% so it is the best option for providing ‘clean’ forage. We are great DIY people in the UK, but unfortunately a homemade steamer does not do the job as it only partially reduces the respirable particle content and does not kill the bacteria. Partially heated or soaked forage actually increases bacteria content - definitely not something you want to feed any horse.

Managing dust

Ideally all horses should be permanently kept on low-dust regimes, as the respiratory tract evolved in fresh-air conditions and cannot cope with long-term exposure to high levels of dust. Yards should be regularly cleaned. A cleaning regime with Protek’s Envirocair Veterinary disinfectant will protect your yard for up to 14 days. This will protect your horses from bacteria, fungi and viruses including Streptococcus Equi (Strangles), E. Coli, Herpesviridae (Equine Herpes), MRSA, Parvovirus and Candida Albicans with Protek’s EnviroCair Veterinary. Due to its food-safe and non-corrosive properties, it is so simple to apply, you can use just a garden pump sprayer to disinfect your stables, lorry and walker, use the hand gel to help prevent cross contamination between horses, even put it in your washing machine to disinfect rugs and numnahs to ensure your yard is disease free. For further information please contact HAYGAIN hay steamers on 0333 200 5233 or www.haygain.com

International dressage rider, Gareth Hughes said: “The correct feeding regime of our dressage horses is an important part of our stable management, this has a direct effect on their performance in the arena. I use HAYGAIN to ensure all my horses forage is consistent and clean, free from any respiratory irritants that could affect their performance without losing the nutritional goodness.”

FEED NEWS

Autumn

FEEDING

Outstanding Results

Autumn is a tricky time of year, as sometimes there is a late flush of grass and depending on your horse’s individual workload, it may be necessary to adjust his intake of concentrates. This month we look at fibre based products as well as those specifically designed to benefit the older horse. As always if you need more advice call one of the many feed advice helplines.

TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ very low calorie feed that contains a multi-supplement including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. The scientifically recommended rate of 10 grams of glucosamine/500kg horse/day is a key feature of the mobility supplement included in this formula. This superb specification provides micronutrients to balance the diets of Good-Doers at rest or in light to medium work. Using TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and will not promote weight gain. Feeding it will help to improve hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer helps to maintain a healthy immune system and also includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue. www.topspec.com

Aloeride With winter here, keeping your horse looking and feeling his best can be tough, but fortunately there is a natural supplement on the market, which could help. Aloeride can help maintain healthy skin and hooves and encourage a shiny coat from the inside out. Aloeride is a totally palatable natural, certified organic aloevera supplement, which not only helps to promote healthy skin, condition hooves, encourage great coat shine and glossy locks, but also supports the immune system. Each box of Aloeride contains 30 sachets (enough for 30 days) equalling over 12 litres of aloe vera juice. It has also been tested by an accredited Newmarket laboratory and does not contain any synthetic compounds.

s young horses are developing it is important to keep a close eye on their limbs to make sure they are developing properly. Hard ground and rapid growth rate can cause various problems. Boxy feet can develop quickly and can easily be missed if the animal in turned out in long grass, usually front feet and usually due to the foot becoming sore on hard ground or due to excessively fast bone lengthening. The deep digital flexor tendon is effectively too tight pulling the foal up on to the tip of its toe, which is then worm away resulting in a boxy conformation. Many of these cases can be corrected with some remedial work by the farrier, trimming the heel down and applying a toe extension. Some require surgery to cut the check ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon or in extreme cases the deep digital flexor tendon itself can be cut. These surgeries are done in conjunction with the farriery, weaning of the youngster to slow down growth rate, resting them from the hard ground and administering non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs to reduce the discomfort of the hoof. Even after surgery these youngsters will have a normal athletic career.

Rapid growth in foals

Another condition we see frequently associated with hard ground and rapid growth rate is physitis, this is where the growth plates at the ends of the long bones become inflamed. Most often it is the growth plates at the ends of the canon bones that are affected, resulting in swollen looking fetlock joints. Often the distal radial growth plates can be affected resulting in large swellings on the inside of the fore limbs just above the carpus. These swellings do generally settle down with a little rest and anti-inflammatory medication, however in some cases the inflammation of the growth plate can result in disproportionate growth on onside of the bone more than the other, resulting in a deviation of the bone when viewed from the front. The most common occurrence is the development of a fetlock varus, or in ward bending of the pastern relative to the canon bone, giving a pigeon toed stance and a dishing pigeon toed gait.

Foot abscesses

The most common cause of lameness in young horses is a foot abscess, however it is important to look at lame youngsters and make sure they do not have swollen joints. Often in the months after weaning we see bulging of the stifle joints or the hocks and this is due to a condition called osteochondrosis, which is where the bone underneath the Fetlock being cartilage inside the joints straightened has not formed properly and with surgery it collapses under stress of loading. This causes chips to form in the joint and an inflammatory reaction to occur due to the exposed subchondral bone within the joint. Often these cases will require surgery at the appropriate time to tidy up the joint and settle the inflammation, many of these youngsters will go on to have a normal athletic career.

Seek treatment immediately

It is important to keep an eye on young developing horses so that problems to do with health and limbs can be picked up and dealt with at an early stage, too often we see horses with bent legs that could have been correct as a youngster or at least prevented from getting to the stage they have. All medical conditions are best treated quickly and appropriately to prevent the animal becoming too debilitated. A preventative health care program should include regular assessment of the limbs and feet with the farrier and monitoring of weight, body condition and growth rate. Most of the feed companies have nutritionists to advise on feeding of young stock and your vet will assist in the assessment of the limbs if you feel there is a problem.
