Welcome 32 T

his issue is all about making dreams come true, whether that is riding at your first hunter trial or winning at the Horse of the Year Show. When Beth Mantel, this month’s cover star, headed to the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham at the beginning of October she hoped she would jump far enough around the course in order to have a photograph taken of her jumping at HOYS. Having gone clear in the first round, her tactics changed and despite her parents’ advice she decided to have a crack at the time. What a good decision that proved to be, as she won the class with four seconds in hand. Beth’s interview on page 19 shows all the emotion and excitement of winning, but also of the wonderful relationship she has with her horse. A clever horse is often as competitive as its owner and will understand when it is important to dig deep and to go fast and clear. Just look at Beth’s horse in the lap of honour, she certainly seems to be enjoying herself. I had a wonderful few days at the NEC watching and chatting to local riders and their family and friends. The Mountain & Moorland classes were judged in the Caldene Arena, with the first two from each section invited to the Championship in the International Arena. Being a regional magazine it is always hard at national events, as there is no guarantee of a local rider winning. However, the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland Championship certainly didn’t disappoint. Georgia Darlington with Tynwydd Good Friday stood Champion with Alice Barr and Okeleat Navigator standing Reserve. This might be the November issue and whilst the features in this month give tips and advice to help you look after your horse this winter, the show reports still very much have a summer theme. The Indian Summer I wrote of last month, did, if briefly arrive and looking at the pictures it looks like lots of you took advantage of it. One of the favourite parts of my job is seeing all the fantastic equestrian disciplines you take part in and this month is no exception as the reports include showing, show jumping, dressage, eventing, hunting, driving, mounted games and reining. As always do let me know what you have been up to. Have fun!

news Premier Sports Horses are on the move As of the 17th October 2015, Sarah Travis, proprietor of Premier Sports Horses, who has been based at Honnington Equestrian Centre, Tunbridge Wells for the last five years, is relocating to Chelwood Equestrian on the Ashdown Forest. Sarah commented: “Our lease was up for review at Honnington and we were told about the yard coming vacant at Chelwood. The facilities are superb and the location truly fabulous and only 25 minutes from Tunbridge Wells. I will be sad to leave Honnington having built up such a lovely yard, but the move to Chelwood was too good an opportunity to miss.” Chelwood Equestrian was built as a training venue for the 2012 Olympics and was the base for the silver medal winning Swedish Three Day Event Team. It has three outdoor schools, a large indoor school, a covered horse walker, 35 acre crosscountry course and direct access to the 6,000 acre Ashdown Forest. Full livery spaces are available. For more information visit www.premiersportshorses.co.uk or call Sarah on 07711 830346.

Survive winter with Safe-Care Equine

B

ritish brand, Safe-Care Equine, the natural grooming products has a number of products to help make life easy this winter. Safe-Care’s BioHoof is a powerful germicide that treats many common hoof problems. You can use it as a treatment or as a preventative measure if you know your horse is more prone to hoof problems at this time of year. Mud-fever is all too common and much harder to manage once it takes hold and the skin is broken and scabby. Take preventative action by using a barrier cream, such as Safe-Care Soothing Barrier Cream. It is perfect for helping to protect the heels and legs. Just because you’re not going to shows or being judged on your turnout doesn’t mean your grooming schedule should take a back seat for the winter months. Groom your horse regularly, his thicker winter coat or clipped coat still needs to keep condition. Wash occasionally and always use warm water and dry them off thoroughly. The Safe-Care Total Body Wash has no foaming agents so doesn’t require lots of rinsing, making it perfect for winter washing. Safe-Care products are all-natural and plant based, with no artificial colours, or fragrances, so they won’t strip the coat of any natural oils making them perfect for winter use. www.safecare-equine.com

Alastair Stewart to anchor debate at BETA ITV newscaster Alastair Stewart is set to make a welcome return to BETA International to host an exciting debate where hot industry topics will take centre stage. This new feature sees key movers and shakers in the equestrian world going head-to-head in a meaty discussion in which they can air their often outspoken points of view as they wrestle with the latest issues affecting different sectors of the trade. “I am delighted to be participating in BETA International once again,” said Alastair. “It is the premier gathering for the industries that support our brilliant equestrian sports. Showjumping is central to my family and I am proud to be an ambassador for British Showjumping, but eventing, dressage and racing are brilliant, too – and, as a nation, we’re pretty good at all of it. I am looking forward to hosting a debate and question-time at the show that should be both informative and entertaining. I do hope that visitors will come along and join us!” BETA International is the world’s leading equestrian, country clothing, outdoor and pet product trade exhibition. The 2016 show takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 24th to 26th January. For information visit www.beta-int.com

Winter workouts with Equiami Lungeing can help maintain and improve your horse’s fitness, whilst saving you time and energy during the short, dark days, but how can you make it interesting? Horses, like children, thrive on routine, yet need variety in their work to prevent boredom. There are many things that you can include in a lunge session to keep your horse interested in his work and listening to you. It is also important says Dr. Hilary Bentley to change the order of things and change the ‘menu’ as often as you can, including starting on a different rein each time. Using a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi gets your horse working over his back very effectively. The warm-up and stretch down phases must remain as these are physiologically important for the horse. The middle ten minutes of the session can include pole work in different formats. Dr Hilary Bentley says: “We often use poles placed like the hands of a clock on the circle at 3, 6, 9 & 12 which encourages activation of the inside hind leg. A square of poles of about 15m can be used to work around and to spiral inside for those fit enough. Raising one end of the poles increases the hind leg activity enormously. These exercises help to activate the inside hind leg, keep the horse focused and attentive whilst improving suppleness.”

Exclusive to this day, Sandown are offering a Sunday Carvery Lunch that includes a two course lunch and premier enclosure admission for just £59 per adult, plus a child under 12 can eat for free with each paying adult.

Parelli Demonstrations at Your Horse Live The Parelli UK team will be at Your Horse Live on 14th & 15th November at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, providing a demonstration on both the Saturday and Sunday. Well known 4* Parelli Professional, Alison Jones will be hosting the demonstrations in the Nettex Arena. Alison is the longest standing Parelli professional in the UK and having become nervous of misbehaving horses when she was younger turned to this form of training for resolve. She never looked back and now has a passion for helping other horse owners build correct foundations with their horses and creating a true relationship. Parelli aims to teach owners techniques to enable them to get the very best from their horse. It is based on the Four Savvy’s which are essentially stages of training for horse and rider to progress through. The Parelli training method has helped thousands of horses and their owners from all over the world. It is ideal for improving various issues with ‘problem’ horses or equally benefits every horse and rider combination. Parelli will also have a stand at Your Horse Live providing further information, advice and equipment. www.parelli.com

ark Davies Injured riders’ Fund is delighted to announce World number 1 showjumper, Scott brash has joined them as a vice President. Administrator and Fund Coordinator rosemary Lang said: “We Rosemary Lang from the are all so thrilled to welcome Scott as Mark Davies Injured Riders a vice President of The mark Davies Injured Fund with World Class riders’ Fund. It is wonderful to have such Showjumper Scott Brash a hugely talented and respected rider on board to help us promote the work we do to help those injured in horse related accidents.” mark Davies Injured riders’ Fund was set up in 1988 by mark’s parents, after he tragically died in an accident at the burghley Horse Trials. The fund was set up in his memory to help support anyone who has suffered an injury around horses, helping people from all walks of life. Anyone who has been unfortunate to have been involved in a horse related accident could qualify for assistance. This could be in the form of legal advice, practical help, such as providing a wheelchair or simple moral support to both the victim and their families. As well as their fund raising efforts, mark Davies Injured riders’ Fund is at the forefront of education about safety and the importance of correct headgear and body protectors to help prevent injury, taking an active interest in the welfare of riders.

Ezyloader Headcollar Adapter

Following research and development and in conjunction with horse transporters and specialist equine vets, the simple adapter attaches to a regular head collar and works when a horse pulls back or rushes forward and releases when rewarding steady forward movement. It can also be used as a schooling aid, not just for loading reluctant horses, but for horses who might be bargy or who might require a chifney or stallion chain for leading. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

Award winning RDA website London-based digital agency, netro42 (www.netro42.com), has won a national business partnership award with the riding for the Disabled Association (rDA) for the pro bono design of the rDA South east’s new website at www.rdasoutheastregion.org.uk The award was presented to netro42’s managing Director, Tony orsi, by presenter and broadcaster, Clare balding, at a gala dinner held on 30th September at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Clare balding, a great supporter of the rDA, was particularly enthusiastic about the work of netro42 saying that the website set the benchmark for the rDA while Lindsay Correa, Chairman of the rDA South east region said: “netro42 have delivered all of our aims beyond our expectations.” A key aspect, especially given the target user group, was to achieve a treble A accessibility rating for the website to ensure that everyone, regardless of their disability, would be able to use it. This approach enables both rDA members and volunteers to fully benefit from the site, whilst opening it up to online donations and the power of social media through the bespoke Content management System, which is built around the region’s exacting requirements. netro42 have produced an inclusive and accessible online experience for rDA members. The website was redesigned from the ground up to be fully responsive and deliver an intuitive user experience across all platforms and devices. “We are enormously proud of our site and grateful for the time and expertise donated by netro42, which represents a donation close to £25,000.” said Lindsay Correa. Stay Supercool Supercool Saddlecloths, part of the WOW Saddles accessories range, are made from a 3D spacer fabric which literally keeps a layer of air between your saddle and your horse. The space that the fabric provides allows sweat to be wicked away from your horse and evaporate, keeping him dry. The fabric is easily cleaned under a hose for most of the time, with only the occasional need to wash the cloth in a machine. It can be dried extremely fast just by shaking. So it is possible to wash the cloth under a hose, and re-use it immediately. www.wowsaddles.com

embers of the Society of master Saddlers were recently treated to a varied and interesting visit to one of London’s oldest funeral businesses. Those attending were hosted by Stan Cribb, Senior Partner of T. Cribb and Sons Funeral Directors and Carriage masters. The east London business was established in 1881 and is steeped in history and heritage. Said SmS Chief executive Hazel morley: “We enjoyed a very interesting tour around their establishment seeing their carriages, hearses, both motorised and horse drawn, the harness room and the stables with their wonderful Fresian horses. Karen Schlotter, one of our committee members who had organised the visit, made them a head collar as a thank you gift.”

Brownbread Horse Rescue is putting out an urgent appeal for help. Proprietor, Dinty Steains said: “We cannot survive this winter with the numbers of horses currently in our care. We have ten to twelve ponies looking for homes and we will consider loans, foster, or care homes. All these ponies are well handled, gentle, kind and have no health issues. The majority of these are 12.2hh or under and will probably make suitable ponies for children. We always seek long-term loans, but we are happy to accept offers of short term foster homes where we can offer support if necessary. We already have many horses in care homes and these carers are mostly looking after retired elderly horses usually on their own land where we can offer advice as required. If you have room for one more please come and visit us and meet the ponies that are desperate to find a family of their own. If you are unable to help in this way, perhaps you could have a rummage through our huge assortment of horsey gear which is for sale and support us in that way. We will always be open to part-exchanges and donations of tack, hay, straw, feed and good bric-a-brac to raise funds but always ring before you come. We only open by arrangement. he team from Wix Hill Livery enjoyed a fun yet successful weekend in Wales at the end of September. Seven riders took eleven horses between them to compete at the Wales and West Derby Show. Wix Hill Livery Stables in Surrey is run by Claire and Mark Edwards with their son Nick, who was jumping four of his horses in Wales. He was joined by Kirby Todd and Charlotte Ward who both work at Wix, along with liveries, Zoe Light, Holly Chantler, Abi Round and Sophie Barker. Nick said: “We had a great weekend with the liveries who came with us. We were all under the watchful of eye of of my mother, Claire Edwards BHS AI, who does an amazing job of producing riders and horses up the levels.” Nick continued: “I took four horses, my top horse Contendaan, a sevenyear-old, who is owned by my parents, Elastique, a six-year-old owned by Simon Milner, Kimba Cloud, a five-year-old owned by Alix Tidmarsh and a new horse, Cunna Ross, who is also owned by my parents.” Nick jumped Contendaan in three classes, reaching round four out of a possible five in the Six Bar competition on the Friday evening. They won the Foxhunter class on Saturday going on to finish joint-first in the Two Fence Challenge by clearing round five at 1.70m, later the same day. The Two Fence Challenge is similar to a Puissance with the height of the fence increasing with each round and a maximum of five rounds allowed. Four riders shared joint-first. Nick said of Contendaan: “He has been produced from the start by us as a family and only ever been in the ring with my brother Reece and me. This year stepped up to 1.30m level and is super consistent. We have had a fantastic summer season and fingers crossed it continues into winter with qualifiers and premier shows planned.” There was plenty of time to enjoy the top level competition and the team enjoyed sharing a bottle or two of Prosecco, whilst watching the Two Fence Challenge on the Saturday night.

Pre-purchase examination Words by ED Lyall BVetMed CertEM MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

T

he pre-purchase examination of a horse, more commonly known as a horse-vetting, is broken down into stages. There are two main types of vetting, a 2 stage or a 5 stage vetting, some people choose to go for the shorter and thus cheaper 2 stage examination (which includes stages 1 and 2), risking that there may be some things not picked up on this limited examination.

The stages are as follows:

Stage 1 – This occurs in the stable. The first thing done is that the vendor is questioned about previous medical history and whether the horse suffers from any vices. Then a full clinical examination is performed including assessment of conformation, palpation of limbs and back, examination of the mouth and eyes and listening to the heart. Surgical scars are carefully looked for as are such conditions as sarcoids. Stage 2 – The horse is examined outside the stable in hand, again the conformation will be assessed. It will be walked and trotted in a straight line several times looking for lameness. Flexion tests are then performed on the limbs. The horse may then be lunged on a firm surface at trot. Stage 3 – This is the exercise test where the horse is usually ridden in a sand school. It is evaluated at walk, trot, canter and gallop. Primarily we are looking for lameness but we are also listening to the horse’s breathing for abnormal inspiratory noise and the heart is assessed again after exercise. The horse may also be lunged on the soft surface. Stage 4 – The horse is rested for approximately 20 minutes

The Arundel Equine Hospital

Whatever you plan to do with your new horse, it is worth investing in a Pre-purchase veterinary examination before being trotted again in stage 5, to see if it stiffens up after exercise. We also listen to the heart again as it is slowing down after exercise. The horse’s markings will be taken, microchip scanned and a blood sample taken at this point. The blood sample is taken to prove that at the time of the vetting the vendor had not administered any medication such as pain killers, the sample is stored for six months and tested if there is a problem after purchase. Also during this stage some vets examine the horse’s feet. Stage 5 – This is a final trot up. Sometimes the flexion tests may be repeated. You will often hear people say that they only want the eyes heart and lungs examined, vets should not do such a limited examination as legally a 2 stage vetting is the minimum that can be performed. A pre-purchase examination is very much a legal contract between the vet and the purchaser. The vetting is done on behalf of a specific purchaser, for a specific purpose. The findings about a horse may be acceptable for the intended use by one person and so the horse passes the examination, but the findings may not be acceptable for another person and the horse fails.

Radiographs

Often the choice of a 2 or 5 stage vetting will depend on the horse’s age, value and intended use. The same is true of whether radiographs should be performed. Sometimes a standard set of images is obtained and sometimes images are obtained of issues that have been identified on the clinical examination, such as a swollen joint. A standard set of radiographs would include the front feet, all four fetlocks, both hocks and stifles. Extra images such as of the back and knees can be taken if it is felt appropriate. Many competition horses would also undergo an endoscopic examination of the upper airway to assess laryngeal function. This would also be carried out if an abnormal inspiratory noise was heard during stage 3 of the examination. If on palpation of the limbs a swelling was identified in the flexor tendons or the suspensory apparatus then an ultrasound examination could be performed, this too can be done as a matter of routine for some purchasers, especially if the horses has already competed at a very high level.

Blood sample

OUR SERVICES The team of 17 dedicated equine vets provide veterinary services throughout East and West Sussex, and into Surrey and Hampshire. All aspects of equine practice are catered for including pre-purchase examinations, lameness investigations, performance horse management, dentistry, medical evaluations and stud medicine (AI chilled/frozen, embryo transfer), as well as all routine veterinary management. We provide a full range of on the road digital diagnostic services such as x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy/gastroscopy. The practice has the back up of the RCVS Accredited Hospital, staffed by vets 24 hours a day, where a range of orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries can be carried out, patients can be hospitalised, sick foals can be nursed and bone scans can be performed. An onsite laboratory allows samples to be processed rapidly.

We care for and about horses Arundel Equine Hospital advert FINAL -GENERAL.indd 1

Sometimes a blood sample is collected and the horse’s haematology and biochemistry profiles are assessed. It is advisable to request that the horse has a blood sample collected and stored at a forensic laboratory, this allows the horse to be screened for some painkillers and sedatives administered by the vendor prior to the pre-purchase examination, if the horse turns out be lame or have behavioural issues when you get it home. Every horse I vet has this sample taken as it protects the vendor and purchaser if something goes wrong after the vetting. If the horse is to be insured, particularly for a high value, then the insurance company will dictate what they require to be done in terms of type of vetting and ancillary tests. It is often a good idea to speak to the company you intend to use prior to having the vetting carried out. As to which vet should do the vetting, most people want their usual vet to do the examination as they trust their judgement, many vets will travel quite some distances to do a vetting, however this can be cost prohibitive. It may be best to get the vendors vet to examine the horse as they should, with the vendor’s permission, provide you with any medical history that the horse has, as such you learn far more about the horse than just what is gleaned at the examination. There should be no conflict of interests, if you employ a vet to examine the horse on your behalf then they will be working for you with your interests in mind not the vendors.

Supreme Champion and Rehomer Beat the Odds Together Hercules upon arrival at World Horse Welfare

Alison and Hercules at home jumping

Three Categories of Winners

World Horse Welfare’s annual Rehomed Horse of the Year competition invited nominations from its 1,700 World Horse Welfare horses and ponies currently out in homes around the country, celebrating their stories as part of its Rehome a Horse Month. Three categories were open for entries including; Funniest Anecdote, Biggest Achievement and Faithful Friend.

Wally is the Funniest World Horse Welfare Hercules and Alison

The winner of the Funniest Anecdote was World Horse Welfare Wally, a horse awarded the title by Olympic dressage rider, Richard Davison, thanks to this tendencies of stealing his rehomer’s walking stick, grinning for a peppermint Wally, who lives in Rye with and peeing on command. his rehomer, smiling for the Richard said: “I just loved camera with his rosette the images of Wally peeing on command, and removing Dad’s walking stick. It must be chaotic ensuring Wally pees precisely on cue, while Dad is sending Maydays from halfway down the field because his walking stick has been removed. What must the neighbours think?” Wally with his award

R

escue pony, World Horse Welfare Hercules has been crowned Supreme Champion in the charity’s annual Rehomed Horse of the Year Awards thanks to his incredible will to survive and his role in helping his rehomer, Alison overcome breast cancer. Hercules arrived at World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm in 2011 with chronic grass sickness, an illness which gave him just a two per cent chance of survival. Thanks to the dedicated team at World Horse Welfare and Hercules’ fighting spirit he made a full recovery, well and truly earning his warrior name. Alison Ironside rehomed Hercules as a three-year-old, continuing his education and then backing him to ride. Alison said: “In March 2014 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and after various surgeries, treatments, drugs, plus many months sat in a chair I decided that it was time I started riding again. Out of all my ponies I knew that Hercules was the one I could trust to look after me in my very weak state. In true caring fashion, even at his young age, Hercules seemed to understand the situation – patiently and carefully carrying me around the lanes never putting a foot wrong, never spooking at anything, never pulling on the rains and never pushing me when I was on the ground getting him ready. He is a pony that took a lot to save but he is a pony that has given everything he can back.” Former Olympic gold-medallist and eventing legend, Jane Holderness-Roddam awarded Hercules the top spot in the awards’ ‘Faithful Friend’ category, saying: “I have chosen Hercules because despite being a bit of a wild child himself, he appeared to recognise and respond to his owners needs when she was ill and curtailed his natural exuberance throughout her rehabilitation, probably because he understood how important it was to fight to survive. This inbuilt sensitivity shows true friendship.” Hercules was then chosen to receive the ‘Supreme Champion’ accolade by World Horse Welfare Chief Executive, Roly Owers who was inspired by Alison and Hercules’ story. He said: “I found Alison and Hercules’ story really moving. Their bond of trust epitomises the close relationship between horse and owner and whilst we had so many fantastic entries, I feel that Hercules has well and truly earned his ‘Supreme Champion’ award.”

Outstanding Service

The winner of the Biggest Achievement category was World Horse Welfare Su who has not only been a faithful family pony but has also given hundreds of disabled children the chance to experience the joys of riding thanks to her long service of 16 years with Riding for the Disabled. World Horse Welfare Su with her Olympic eventer and World rossette and long service award Horse Welfare Patron Pippa Funnell MBE crowned Su the category winner. Pippa said: “In the end, Su pipped it for me because she has clearly helped so many people through her long experience at the RDA, and that kind of lifechanging achievement may not be recognised elsewhere. Her story really choked me up when I think of all the people she has helped.” World Horse Welfare marked a 10 year record last year with 300 horses rehomed - and the charity hopes to exceed this number in 2015. Joining the field

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe of retailer www.worldwidetack.com Above: For many, the autumn and winter months bring the joy of hunting with our horses. Left: Your local riding club may run mock hunt clinics..

Firstly, the most crucial point to consider when going hunting is that your horse is totally healthy and sound, and sufficiently fit to cope with the rigors of the day. Rider fitness is also important to ensure you enjoy yourself and vitally that you are safe whilst tackling a variety of different terrains, weather conditions and sometimes jumping efforts. Many people are concerned about what to wear - here’s an overview: Adults going hunting that have not been awarded colours by their hunt should wear tweed jackets during the autumn months, and black or navy coats during the winter season. A white or cream stock with a plain pin should accompany a simple, yet smart shirt. Breeches should be beige in colour, not white, and partnered with streamlined, tall boots. For those with long hair, a hairnet should always be worn. Your horse should be turned out to a high standard on hunting days, so bath the day before using top quality grooming and bathing products, in order to get a high shine on the coat. Get your plaiting fingers at the ready, as all horses and ponies should be smartly plaited when hunting. In terms of tack and equipment, a well fitting saddle and bridle is an absolute must, and for safety reasons it is advisable to use a breastplate, such as the Stephens Hunt Breastplate, in order to secure your saddle and prevent it from slipping backwards - it also gives you a neck strap to hold on to if required. A breastplate Some horses do become excited when out hunting, like this so a breastplate such as the Stephens Fully Adjustable Stephens Hunt Breastplate which offers removable martingale version with attachments to use where required, is ideal. a removable A comfortable saddle cloth, such as the Gel-Eze martingale attachment range with cosy sheepskin and shock absorbing gel is ideal. cushions, offers your horse optimum comfort on long and strenuous rides. Many riders consider using protective boots on their horses, however most people agree that this is unwise, on the basis that dirt and grit can become imbedded in the boots when travelling over boggy, wet and muddy going, resulting in the dirt under the boot causing cuts and sores to the horse’s limbs. It is crucial to have sufficient ‘brakes’ on the hunting field, both for your safety and to save any unwanted embarrassment should your horse misbehave, so a substantial bit is vital. Our four-legged friends often understandably become excited on the field, so a stronger bit than usual is typically required. The McHardy Bit from Bombers Bits, available through World Wide Tack, offers a jointed mouthpiece in sweet iron with a choice of either a Fulmer or 2.5 ring style, and provides If you need help with your brakes, consider a the perfect hunting bit bit such as the McHardy Bit from Bombers Bits. for many horses.

he autumn and winter months bring the joy of hunting with our horses for many a seasoned rider. The age-old traditional discipline has obviously diversified since changes to legislation in 2005, but the thrilling activity still brings the opportunity to ride out with hounds, following a laid scent over a variety of terrain, including jumps, all whilst enjoying the beautiful British countryside. For those of you that are considering taking part in hunting for the first time this year, take a look at our ‘need-to-know’ essentials:

For your first time out hunting, it may be wise to go with a friend who has been before; they will be able to show you the ropes and advise you of any do’s and don’ts on the day. Prior to your first hunt, telephone the hunt secretary - they are there to help, and will be able to tell you all about the meeting venue, dress code, parking and payment, known as the cap. The most important thing to remember is to have fun. Your local riding club or hunt may also run mock hunt clinics the perfect way to practice and experience the atmosphere. The Four Seasons of

Worming Words by Gillian Booth SQP, Proprietor of Westgate Labs

W

hen summer turns to autumn you may be wondering if your horse needs a wormer. The four seasons of the year are a good prompt to think about worm control, though not necessarily to actually dose your horse. First find out what is going on. As the year goes into the third quarter it’s time to test again, hopefully with a good result and no need to worm yet. Tapeworm control needs attention twice a year so if you are on a spring/autumn plan why not try the new Equisal saliva test this year? Results show that the majority of horses don’t need routine tapeworm doses with only a quarter of tests proving positive. Conversely some horses that have been wormed for tapeworm are coming up positive. Continue to remove any bot eggs you might see stuck to the leg hair. Bots will be treated in the winter worming quarter.

Wormer resistance

Wormer resistance continues to give cause for concern. Anyone simply dosing their horse all year without doing even one test is taking a big risk. At Westgate we test many horses who have been on substantial dosing programmes and still have large worm burdens.

Moxidectin (in Equest) is still our most effective and important wormer because it treats all stages of redworm in winter. There is only one other product to treat these important stages, five days of fenbendazole (Panacur) but this treatment is now almost useless in many places. *Recent studies have shown an EPR, ‘egg reappearance period’ of only six-eight weeks for moxidectin in some cases. The EPR should be about twelve weeks. This is the first sign of developing resistance. If the day comes when there are no effective wormers left to treat our wormy horses then we really are in a bad place. Please keep moxidectin special and only use it for winter dosing to treat encysted redworm, and known wormy horses who really need it. *Veterinary Parasitology Volume 204, Issues 3–4, 29 August 2014, Pages 291–296 Thomas Geurden et al.

Question:

I have a shire cross approaching threeyears-old. I have had him since he was 16months-old, he was totally untouched. I am delighted to say he now does everything I ask of him and we do everything together. He accepts the saddle no problem, but when I try to put weight on him he becomes very tense. I have tried putting a dummy on him, but he goes mad at first and then settles a bit, but is still nervous. The owner of my yard says he has no respect for me and he walks all over me. I don’t know what to try next.

Answer:

You have made some great discoveries in your journey of progress with your young horse. It’s great that you’ve already got a good relationship with him and he does everything that you ask him to do.

With regards to getting him used to having weight on his back, Pat has a skeleton of how he starts young horses. It’s based on having communication with the horse in the form of the Seven Games. The first game is the friendly game which is about accepting the human. Having the relationship with your horse that you already have in that he does a lot with you and for you is where you’ve built rapport. The friendly game is about building confidence in your horse, in you as a leader for him as well as his environment as a learner and in himself. Having confidence in you as a leader is going to build respect in your relationship and develop trust in what you ask of him. It’s also about preparation for him and

setting him up so that the process is a positive one for him. Pat recommends that his students graduate level three of his programme before studying the colt starting skeleton. This is so that we can learn about having feel, timing and having positive attributes to offer a young horse. Pat has Parelli Professionals all over the world who start young horses by following his skeleton and gives the young horse the best experience of being started. TRIED&TESTED Swift Bedding – Premium Wood Pellets for Bedding

1 To start the bed open the bag and pour on water

W

ood pellets make an excellent bedding for horse stables as they can help reduce cleaning out times compared to other beddings. Swift Energy’s Premium softwood, light coloured pellets are of high quality. They are produced by compressing pure, clean and uncontaminated sawdust and shavings in a pellet mill. No additives are used. Swift pellets are heat treated to eliminate bacteria and contain less than 1% dust. They are very absorbent and it is easy to remove any wet patches with a fork or shovel. To start a bed, lay six bags of pellets across the stable. Split the bags with a big cross and pour a third of a watering can of water into each bag. Leave for around ten minutes, then tip out and mix. All the pellets should start to break down, but if not add a bit more water.

Localrider Comment: Swift Energy Premium bedding provides a soft base that is virtually dust free and perfect for horses with respiratory problems or allergies – or in my case a pony that likes to tuck into his bed when he’s finished his night time hay net! This is a great bedding solution if you have to carry out your stable duties in a hurry because once the bed is set up the super absorbency means all you need to do is a quick skip out, which wastes very little of the bed. With minimal bedding wasted Swift is also economical, as you just need to top up with a couple of bags once or twice a week.

Bridgham gave judge, David Froggatt, a super ride and showed outstanding manners and quality to take the top spot in fine style. Trained by Nigel Bloom, he ran in six point to points and was placed three times before he retired from the track in 2009. A former runner-up in this class in 2011, Bridgham has been competing in Lightweight Hunter classes with Oliver Hood for the past few seasons. Sofia is based at the Hood family’s yard in Norfolk and was looking for a horse to do Ladies classes. “I worked in Bridgham for Oliver at a show last year and really liked him. Alastair (Oliver’s father) suggested we have a go at Ladies classes with him, so we have really been focussing on that”, said Sofia, who has swapped rides this year with Oliver and he is now riding Sofia’s former RIHS amateur winning LW hunter, Patrician. Sofia and Bridgham got off to a successful start when they stood Supreme Champion at BSPS Area 16 on their first show ring appearance. They qualified for HOYS not only in the SEIB Racehorse To Riding Horse class, but also in the Ladies Side Saddle and the Lightweight Show Hunter of the year. Sofia said: “Bridgham is my absolute favourite, he is such a sweetheart and tries to give 100% all the time.” The pair won the Ladies at Edenbridge this year and plan to do more Ladies classes next season. “He loves it, and has such a super temperament”, added Sofia.

Half-brothers

Helen Newbold produced Tycoons Reflection beautifully to take the runner up spot. By Definite Article, Tycoon is a half-brother to Helen’s former SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Champion, Deep Reflection, and were both bred by Mrs C Bailey out of Tudor Thyne. “When the breeder emailed to ask if I would like him, I could not say no”, explained Helen. “We have spent some time allowing him to get stronger but he is an absolute gentleman”. The 10-year-old bay gelding ran seven times during his racing career, trained by Henrietta Knight and latterly by Mick Channon, but Helen says “he was too polite”. He has tasted success since turning to the show ring, taking the Champion Hunter title at his first show at Aintree last season. He also qualified for the Royal International Horse Show as a light weight hunter, and for the Retraining of Racehorses final at Hickstead. “He is so similar to Chunky (Deep Reflection). They stand next to each other in the yard and he is just a bit bigger. And they look very similar - they are both dark bay and don’t have a white hair between them. Chunky is such a hard act to follow but he is just amazing”, said Helen.

From Cheltenham to Birmingham

Katie Jerram, from Great Dunmow, Essex, took third with Barbers Shop, owned by HM The Queen. Barbers Shop was bred by Queen 44 Localrider november 2015

elizabeth and trained by nicky Henderson and ran a total of 24 times including finishing seventh in the 2009 cheltenham gold cup. He had eight wins and several placings accumulating prize money of over £140,000 and last ran in 2012. Katie and barbers Shop have been finalists in the Seib racehorse to riding Horse HoYS championship for the last two years, finishing fifth in 2013 but a skin rash meant they were unable to take part in the final last year.

High standard

The twelve finalists came before judges, David Froggatt (ride) and Jayne Hall (conformation), who agreed that the standard was very high. “it was hard to choose, they were all so well behaved. not one of them did anything wrong, they were really nice”, said David. “in this class you have horses of different stamps, which makes it harder to categorize them. The riding horses have to ride like riding horses, or hunters or hacks, which makes it a lot to take in. but the hunter types really did ride like hunters, and the hack gave a lovely ride – beautifully behaved and very mannerly”, he added. Jayne agreed, “They were all so beautifully behaved and well retrained, it was a real joy to judge. The top horses would not disgrace any open class, and when the lights went down and we watched our winner move so beautifully on the lap of honour we agreed we had got it right!” The Seib racehorse to riding Horse series was instigated by Seib to support the retraining of racehorses and to provide a platform to show how a correctly re-schooled racehorse can become a top class show horse. all the horses in this class must have raced, and may be produced for the show ring by amateur or professional riders.

The 2015 RoR Racehorse to Riding Horse Dressage Championships showcased a high standard at its two day event held at Houghton Hall Equestrian Centre on 26th & 27th September. Local rider Fiona Joplin headed the ROR Elementary Championship with Medburn Singer. The five-year-old owned by Alison Hall and his Southampton based rider won the close run competition where the top three were separated by the tiniest of percentages. Fiona and Medburn Singer finished on 69.48% while their closest rivals, Sand Martin ridden by Amy Ferris achieved a score of 69.31%. Third placed Last Emperor ridden by Sarah Hale was on 68.96%.

Racing News Simple Verse has been reinstated as winner of the St Leger after a successful appeal heard by the BHA, led by her Andover based trainer Ralph Beckett. Ridden by Andrea Atzeni the Qatar Racing owned filly became the first filly to win the Doncaster race for 23 years but had been demoted due to interference in the closing stages to second past the post Bondi Beach. Golden Horn and Frankie Dettori denied French mare Treve an historic third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with victory at Longchamp. Dettori gave the Epsom Derby winner a masterful ride which defied a wide draw before slotting in behind the leader where they were well positioned to move clear of Flintshire and New Bay, who finished second and third respectively with Treve in fourth.

TRIED&TESTED

Getting ready for Autumn

This month we have been testing a mixture of items to help make life easier on the yard this autumn. Amigo Bravo 12 Plus XL Cut to fit the larger horse with a more generous neck and drop, and optimum dart placement. Made from a strong waterproof and breathable 600D polyester outer, 200G fibrefill for warmth and a shine enhancing polyester lining. Double front closures, front leg arches and cross surcingles. Sizes: 5’9”-7’6” RRP: £95.00 www.horseware.com LR Comment: Marley is a sturdy 16hh maxi cob. Other rugs that he has worn have not been deep enough in the body, nor wide enough around his neck. The Amigo Hero XL fits him with ease and it doesn’t slip when he is turned out despite his love of rolling! We will certainly be looking for other rugs in this range.

Bossy’s Under Rug The Bossy’s Under Rug incorporates Bossy’s existing top selling bib with an extension in the same fabric to provide total body cover. It forms a protective layer between the top rug and the hair, preventing rubs and leaving a shiny coat. It helps to prevent the build-up of grease and grime on your rugs. It is simple to fit and fully machine washable, therefore hopefully helping to cut down on your rug laundry bill. Currently available in black. Priced from £45.00 www.bossysbibs.com LR Comment: The perfect liner that not only protect s the shoulder, wither and chest form rubs, but also leaves the coat with a shine. Using this liner also reduces the need to wash rugs as often as you can wash the liner regularly thus keeping your horse clean. A definite asset to any rug collection.

Waterproof Wheelbarrow Cover No more mess on the yard! Made from tough, waterproof fabric the Wheelbarrow Cover is designed and made in the UK. The elasticated cover is large enough to fit over a standard wheelbarrow with a large load of hay, shavings etc. Protecting the cargo from the wind and rain, as well as preventing it from blowing across the yard. The X Large version fits double wheeled barrows and XX Large fits four wheeled yard carts. Colours: Hunter Green, Red, Maroon, Purple & Pink RRP: £15.99 www.herbb.co.uk LR Comment: No matter how careful I am at wheeling my barrow something always falls off on route to the muck trap. The best thing about the Waterproof Wheelbarrow Cover is that it fits over the biggest of loads. It can be quickly rinsed in a bucket (if needed) and dried on the fence. Great for putting over hay too, particularly on blustery days.

Horseware Liner A Velcro loop attachment around the neck area, clips on the back corner of the outer rug. A simple system, it gives your rug superior insulation properties without the need for two separate rugs and can be easily washed at home in a domestic washing machine. The liners are available in 100g, 200g, 300g and 400g. Sizes: Pony – 3’9” – 5’9” Horse – 5’6” – 7’3” RRP: £46.00 www.horseware.com LR Comment: I tested the liner with the Horseware Rhino Plus Turnout that we featured in the October issue of Localrider. Many of the Horseware rugs are designed to work with additional liners and I like the flexibility this offers, particularly as the temperature can vary quite a lot in a matter of days. The other good thing is that they are easy to pop in the washing machine and dry quickly, meaning that you can keep the layer next to your horse clean. The liners are easy to attach and fit well.

Autumn

FEATURE

fashion focus Words by Lucy Nicholas

Summer has sadly drawn to an end, and many riders will be starting to think about their autumn and winter wardrobes, in order to make sure they have all the items needed to get through the colder, wetter and muddier months. So, with the new season on the horizon, many fashion-conscious equestrians are turning their attention to the new styles on offer for this time of year.

C

oco Chanel was reportedly the first woman to wear jodhpurs for fashion reasons rather than riding practicality back in the 1920s, having been inspired to copy the riding breeches she saw a friend’s groom wearing. In more recent years, we have seen the fashion world increasingly turn their attention to equestrian fashion for inspiration, with the Autumn 2015 fashion collections featuring lots of tweed, and American model and equestrian enthusiast Bella Hadid appearing in an equestrian-themed fashion shoot for the next edition of international style bible, Porter. Returning to our horsey suppliers and retailers, what is in store for horsey fashionistas this year? Both functionality and fashion is important to chic horse riders, as each clothing item needs to perform in order to keep us warm, dry and comfortable in the saddle and also whilst we are working on the yard. The key colours for the 2015 season include multiple brown shades, from rich chocolate to the paler taupe; stylish burgundy and the ever timeless, classic navy. Fashionable styles include simple, straight collar zip up tops, Gilets and warm hoodies. Cosy fleeces with plainer patterns than in recent seasons are set to become fashionable this year, while no wardrobe is complete without an essential waterproof jacket - look out for more tailored looks with defined waists (ideal when your instructor wants to observe your body position), as well as the eternal favourite, bomber-jacket styles.

Layering is essential for the colder weather, trapping in warm air between comfortable layers

Checked cotton shirts with flattering slim-fits are surprisingly cool, and fashion-forward

Denim breeches and tailored shirts will take you straight from yard to high street

anyone who likes a bolder look. Layering is essential for the colder weather, trapping in warm air between comfortable layers, so when the winter months hit, investing in a thermal vest is a must, topped with a long sleeved shirt and warm jumper such as a fleece. A good quality jacket is an essential item for the avid rider, and blouson styles and bomber jackets are already proving popular here at The Saddlery Shop, especially in smart plain colours, such as black or navy. Don’t forget as well that during the coming months, the sun sits lower in the sky - hacking can therefore become more dangerous as the sunlight on bright days can obscure motorists’ vision, so be sure that you have plenty of high visibility fluorescent or reflective clothing at the yard for hacking in these conditions. (Wrap-style sunglasses are also ideal, and can be worn under your helmet safely). In recent years, ‘high vis’ clothing has become a lot more fashion friendly, with more flattering styles available too - perfect for those who like to look good in the saddle whilst staying safe.

Our suggestions

For autumn, pairing a smart, collared long sleeved polo shirt with a cosy Gilet provides a smart and functional look, and this season, high-shine quilted Gilets are set to become fashion favourites for

Waterproof trousers are a must-have for any rider to stay warm and dry during the wetter weather.

The Dublin Thermal Waterproof Riding Trousers are ideal for cold, wet days.

The Dublin Thermal Waterproof Riding Trousers are ideal for cold, wet days and have full length zips on the outside of the legs These functional, thermal over-trousers are designed to both ride in and to wear around the yard. The smart trousers can be worn on their own or over jodhpurs or breeches, and will be sure to keep you warm and dry on cold or wet days. They feature lightly padded legs for warmth and ease of movement, and a really smart synthetic suede seat for excellent grip in all weathers - if you discount such garments because you have experienced rustly, nylon waterproof over-trousers previously, you may like to give these a try. Feed news Words by Anna Welch BVSc, BSc, MRCVS. Veterinary Nutritionist, TopSpec

Winter Feeding Advice

D

uring winter, when grazing is in limited supply, frozen or covered by snow, it is important to provide alternative sources of fibre (e.g. hay, haylage or chop) to aid digestion and keep the hindgut working efficiently. Even if your horse is living out, hay or haylage should be provided at least twice daily. A horse would normally graze for at least 16 hours a day and fibre is continually fermented by the microflora in the hindgut, supplying energy to the horse. This process of fermentation also produces heat and is a perfect central heating system. So before reaching for extra rugs and hard feed in the cold weather, always ensure your horse has access to ad-lib forage.

Weather warning

Snow and frost also brings with it a risk of laminitis, diarrhoea and colic. Sunny days result in sugar production within the grass from photosynthesis. However, low temperatures (below 5oC) mean that the grass doesn’t use those sugars to grow and stores them as fructans. Ingestion of this high-soluble-carbohydrate grass can trigger laminitis and digestive disturbances.

Time for a check-up

With hay or haylage supplying the majority of your horse’s forage in winter, effective teeth action is crucial and annual dental checks by a vet or qualified equine dental technician are essential to keep him in good condition throughout the winter. Elderly horses with dental problems will drop weight significantly when they become reliant on hay or haylage as they are unable to chew it effectively. Loose droppings may also be seen as a result. Chopped forage, e.g. TopChop Grass, or pre-ground fibre e.g. TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes, can be used as partial or total hay replacers to maintain the essential fibre supply to their hindgut. Horses with respiratory problems can also find winter a difficult time. In most

cases living out is a good option. However, for horses that have to be stabled, the key is a well-ventilated environment, i.e. a clean stable, low-dust bedding and good quality forage. Soaking hay before feeding may help but for some horses, haylage is preferable. For good-doers, feeding a dampened low-calorie chop (e.g. TopChop Lite) as a hay replacer may be necessary.

Providing a balanced diet

Although forage is the foundation of a horse’s diet during the winter, it is important to balance this diet and ensure an optimum supply of the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals that will be lacking in a forage only diet. This is where TopSpec Feed Balancers come in. They are extremely nutrient dense products, help to maintain optimum forage to concentrate ratios and increase digestive efficiency. For those that need to gain weight, I recommend a conditioning feed balancer. These include TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer, TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer, TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer and TopSpec Cool Balancer. The high quality protein included will promote muscle development and topline whilst the amount of nutrients that can be utilised from the grass and hay or haylage will be increased, reducing or eliminating the requirement for additional hard feed. If needed for further condition, products such as TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes, CoolCondition Cubes or Super Conditioning Flakes can be added. Conversely, for good-doers, winter can be a very useful time to drop some condition by feeding poor-nutritional-quality hay e.g. late-cut, high-fibre meadow hay that has been soaked in ample, fresh, cool water for 12 hours before feeding. TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer or TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer can be used to balance the diet. These supply optimum levels of vitamins and minerals (and joint supplement if necessary) without promoting weight gain, when fed as

part of a calorie controlled diet. Winter stabling and inconsistent workload may mean that your horse’s behaviour could begin to change. To reduce fizzy behaviour, late-cut meadow hay is recommended and to prevent boredom, this hay should be fed ad-lib. TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes can also be fed in a snack ball to keep your horse occupied. Hard feeds should be kept small, low in sugar and starch and cereal-grain-free and mixes or flakes should be avoided. Any TopSpec feed balancer and most TopSpec blends are ‘Non-Heating’ and therefore, ideal. If your horse can be very anxious or over-excitable due to management changes during the winter period, a calmer, such as TopSpec Calmer, may also be beneficial.

FEED NEWS

What to feed this winter

This month we look at a range of products which could be of benefit to your horse this winter. The important thing to remember as the temperature drops is that in order to maintain his core temperature and therefore not use up precious calories in the process of keeping warm, your horse needs to have a regular intake of fibre. HorseHage AppleChaff If you have a horse or pony that is fussy about his food and needs his fibre levels increased to bulk out his concentrate ration, then AppleChaff could offer a solution. Delicious AppleChaff is a high quality chaff made from the finest quality straw which has been chopped and dust extracted, then dressed with a unique, low sugar dressing. Applechaff contains real diced apple pieces as well as apple essence to make it irresistible to even the fussiest of feeders. It is well known that apples are not just a tasty favourite of your four-legged friend, but are a good source of a wide range of natural nutrients, including potassium, calcium, Vitamin C and dietary fibre. AppleChaff is naturally high in fibre and is excellent for adding bulk to a horse or pony’s diet, helping to promote good digestion by stimulating the production of saliva and regulating the slow passage of food through the gut. In particular it will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew, requiring up to 8000 chews per kilo to eat compared to as few as 1200 for concentrates. HorseHage AppleChaff can be mixed into the hard feed ration, or used as a palatable base in which to add supplements, balancers and medication. www.horsehage.co.uk

Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet is a highly nutritious micronized (cooked) sugar beet pulp feed which provides an excellent source of digestible fibre and is suitable for laminitics and horses with Cushings Speedi-Beet Disease. pictured before and Due to its unique after soaking manufacturing process, Speedi-Beet can be soaked and ready to use in just 10 minutes. Feed either cold, or as a warm mash in winter to help raise core body temperature. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Rowen Barbary Solution Mash For horses that are prone to laminitis it is important to try to avoid using cereals in the diet, but where fibre alone is not sufficient to meet the energy requirements especially in poor doers oil should be included providing a much safer alternative than the more traditional cereal based feeds. With a very high oil content but with no cereals and with a very low starch and sugar level Solution Mash has been specifically designed for horses that need a higher calorie diet for conditioning and controlled weight gain, whilst being ideal for horses that suffer from laminitis. Being very high in fibre this helps to encourage slow rates of digestion throughout the hindgut, with added Yeasacc 1026 helping support optimum fibre and mineral digestion. Super high levels of Vitamin E are included helping support the immune system and maintain healthy antioxidant levels as well as additional Lysine and Methionine for optimal protein balance and protected Bioplex Selenium, Zinc and Copper for improved availability. Natural herbs spearmint, garlic and fenugreek are included along with all the essential nutrients required for a fully balanced diet. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Respiratory Horslyx Respiratory Horslyx offers a unique opportunity to support respiratory health, encourage natural trickle-feeding patterns and balance forage deficiencies all in one tub. Containing Menthol, Eucalyptus and Aniseed, this palatable lick helps to keep airways clear of mucus, in turn helping horses to breathe easily and reduce the high levels of stress associated with disorders. Additionally, Respiratory Horslyx provides a balanced package of high specification vitamins and minerals, including powerful antioxidants and Vitamin C to help support and maintain a strong, healthy immune system, which in itself helps to promote good, healthy lung function. www.horslyx.com

NAF Recover NAF Recover is an antioxidant formula for relaxed muscles. Recover is ideal to use after strenuous exercise and competition to support the horse’s natural recovery process. Fed as a five day course, it helps ensure mobility and athletic potential is maintained.

Equine Cortaflex HA Super Fenn Equine America has combined the world renowned clinically tested equine joint supplement Cortaflex HA Super Strength with Super Fenn to provide a top quality product for horses and ponies of all ages and condition. The combination of these two outstanding supplements supports joint mobility for horses in competition or work, or those requiring help with joint care due to age or other reasons. Cortaflex HA Super Fenn contains the key isolates of Chondroitin and Glucosamine with ASU, Sodium Hyaluronate (HA), Silicon and Bromelain to give your horse the best help at very affordable price. www.equine-america.co.uk

TopSpec Cool Balancer TopSpec Cool Balancer is designed for horses and ponies that need extra condition but no ‘fizz’ and that are in light to medium work. It provides a very palatable, safe and effective way to improve condition and topline without adding excess calories to the diet. TopSpec Cool Balancer, as with all the balancers in the TopSpec range, provides all the necessary levels of vitamins and minerals to ensure the horse’s diet is well balanced. Feeding TopSpec Cool Balancer improves the amount of nutrients that a horse can extract from his feed. Because the horse can utilise more nutrients from forage the amount of concentrate that needs to be fed can be reduced. This benefits digestion and is a more natural way of feeding, leading to a more relaxed horse. www.topspec.com

Haygain Regardless of the type of forage you feed your horse, it is crucial that the dust content is minimal. With Haygain you can have peace of mind that it will be completely dust free and nutritious. Haygain produce a range of scientifically proven hay steamers that eliminate respirable dust in hay and haylage by killing mould spores and bacteria to produce hygienically clean forage. The steaming process takes approximately 50 minutes, dependant on the steamer and you can prepare all of your haynets for the day in the morning so they are ready to use when you need them. After steaming, the hay or haylage has a very appetising sweet smell, which encourages even the fussiest eater to finish their ration and hence reduce waste left on the floor. Horses with respiratory problems can also be significantly aided with the use of a Haygain steamer which has been scientifically proven to reduce difficulties in this area. www.haygain.com
