ow in its third year at the All England Showground at Hickstead, the Sunshine Tour Championships directed by Rebecca Stansfield and her team from Great Bookham Equestrian Centre ran with military precision. Riders had qualified throughout the year for the popular unaffiliated championships, which included finals for showing, show jumping, dressage and eventers challenge classes. There were numerous Supreme Championships, with the showing competitors having a Super Supreme, on both Saturday and Sunday, which saw all of the Supreme Champions coming forward together to be judged.

Welsh D stands Supreme Judge and sponsor Gayle Holder had the tough job of choosing Saturday’s Super Supreme Champion from the 14 Supreme and

Reserve Champions who came forward to the Championship. Asking each combination to perform an individual show to make her look at them, she found her champion in Louise Hawkins’ Welsh D, Ilar Ceio. The combination had won both the Working Hunter Pony Championship and the Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter Pony Championship, before standing Supreme Working Hunter Pony Champions. (They also won the Large Breeds Mountain & Moorland Ridden Championship and stood Reserve Supreme Ridden Show Pony Champions on Sunday.) Louise describes Ilar Ceio, who she has owned for three years, to be completely versatile doing a bit of everything including jumping and dressage. They had competed in both the Novice and Elementary Dressage Championships on Friday, being placed in the Novice Final. Based in the Isle of Wight Louise had caught the 6am ferry on Friday morning, stabling at Hickstead to enjoy three days of competition. Louise’s plans for next year include registering to compete in affiliated showing competitions. They have certainly had a successful 2017 winning at Cranleigh, finishing second at Romsey and standing Supreme Ridden Champions at the Isle of Wight County Show. Talking of her champion, judge Gayle Holder said: “The Welsh section D was very mannerly and true to type. It is a horse I would like to sit on and ride. He owned the ring and produced a nice pattern. I asked them all to show me something different and both the champion and reserve did that.”

Ella and Bella The Reserve Supreme Championship on Saturday went to last year’s Super Supreme, the enchanting combination of Ella Freeman and her pony Bella (Ruso Rocking Horse). I asked Ella, now four, what

she had been doing since I last saw her and she said: “Practising for this show.” Her mother Laura said it is all Ella has talked about all summer, she has been so excited about coming back to the Championships. The journey from Wolverhampton for Ella, Bella and their support team was richly rewarded as the combination won the Lead Rein Showing 6 & under section B Championship, the Mountain & Moorland Lead Rein Showing 10 & under section B and the Mini Supreme, before standing Reserve Super Supreme. Ella who has just started school has been doing lots of cantering at home and even showed us a few strides in her lap of honour. She loves hacking and is also a member of the local saddle club. Mrs Phelan who had chosen Ella and Bella as the Mini Supreme Champions said: “She is the perfect little Lead Rein pony, shown on a loose rein. She is an exceptional little lead rein jockey, who can rise perfectly. I am sure this combination will go a long way.”

Eight-year-old Antonia Stewart and Rosslayne Henrietta stood Reserve in the Mini Supreme Championship. Antonia who is a member of the Bisley & Sandown Chase Branch of the Pony Club does a bit of everything with Henrietta. Having stayed Friday night at Hickstead, they were stabling overnight on Saturday before heading off to Goodwood on Sunday morning to go eventing. Sienna Dyne won the Top Turnout Supreme Championship with Ridge Williams Nippy. The combination had won both the Top Turnout Lead Rein Championship and the Lead Rein Showing Championship 10 & under. Nine-year-old Sienna and her sister, Ella, 11 are both members of the West Kent Meopham Pony Club, where Nippy enjoys show jumping and mounted games. Although, the thing he likes most is eating. The Reserve Supreme Top Turnout Championship went to Moya Payne and Bubbles. 12-year-old Moya has loaned Bubbles for the last four years from his owner, Claire Mitchell, who bought him as a yearling. They are members of Bisley Pony Club and Area 8 side saddle group. They have only been doing side saddle for a year but won the Junior section at Kent County and won the Junior Equitation class at Equifest. Moya has an 1840 side saddle and is hoping to go to France to compete next year. Speaking after her win, her mother said: “Bubbles has taught Moya so much. Moya was very nervous and scared to canter when she first got her.”
