LIVING L’OFFICIEL
Although the specific ways in which fashion will evolve post-Covid-19 remain to be seen, these two months have seen the fashion industry reacting with speed – in the aim of playing a part in helping to control the spread of the coronavirus. Stores, distribution sites, and productions facilities shuttered. Shows, of course, were cancelled or postponed. And donations were made, coupled with a refocusing of factories to produce hand sanitisers, masks and gowns. And to help soothe our minds while we #stayathome, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo and more have remained creative, providing digital distractions – creating online communities (read all about them in this month’s news section) for us to be a part of. In the same spirit of staying (at home while staying) creative, and offering happy distraction, we present you with our May issue. Like Marc Jacobs very recently said: Although isolation presents challenges for the way we work, creativity will never stop. And so we found new ways to complete our May issue, from home: our husband-and-wife contributor duo of Ali McNally and Chris Scheurich pulled off a stay-home accessories Polaroid shoot in New Orleans; while our Finale page features finger-drawn Instagram art by our team and Seoul-based fashion illustrator JaeSuk Kim.
Paris Jackson wears Saint Laurent, with Bulgari jewellery and Chopard earrings
Although stores are temporarily closed in Singapore during the much needed Circuit Breaker month, The Creative Issue hopes to celebrate the hard work put in by creatives, before – and even after – lockdowns were put in place. We hope the issue’s vibrant and varied art-inspired visuals bring colour and cheer into your homes via your phone, iPad or computer screens, and that our features – on Spring/Summer 2020’s best collaborations, and the role that art played in stimulating 2020’s fashion, beauty and bijoux – motivate the flow of your creative juices at home, and inspire you to try something new.

Back To The Future Dior taps Daniel Arsham for a series of limited edition art objects, titled Future Relics WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
Street artist KAWS, underground illustrator Raymond Pettibon and many more — Kim Jones’ tenure at Dior has been punctuated by collaborations with contemporary creatives, and this season makes no exception. Spring/Summer 2020’s artist of choice is Daniel Arsham, who partnered with Jones to design not only the set of last June’s menswear show, but also a much-anticipated capsule of ready-to-wear and accessories. Hot on the heels of the latter’s launch, Dior has unveiled yet another joint effort from the power duo: a line of limited edition objets d’art. Straddling the worlds of art, architecture, and performance, Arsham is perhaps best known for his concept of “fictional archaeology”, wherein everyday items are reimagined to look as they might if unearthed thousands of years down the line. The artist weaves this philosophy into the new collection as an extension of his Future Relics series, simultaneously celebrating the maison’s storied heritage while imagining a distant, dystopian future. Objects drawn from house archives and Christian Dior’s personal possessions are recreated as hydrostone sculptures, which are then eroded and encrusted with quartz crystals to resemble historical artefacts. These include a telephone and a clock from Monsieur Dior’s house in the south of France, a basketball, a set of four letters spelling out the Dior name, a book inspired by Je Suis Couturier, a collection of observations and musings penned by the maison’s founding father. Each numbered piece has been handcrafted at Arsham’s studio, and comes in a custom wooden crate, accompanied by a certificate of authentication, a pair of gloves, and a specially-made hourglass.

State Of The Art Both deeply rooted in self-expression, the relationship between fashion and art is one of symbiosis, and this season, designers are all too keen to show us why WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
FLOWER POWER Florals for spring are hardly groundbreaking, but in the hands (or should we say, les petites mains) of Dior, garden variety prints are elevated to an art form. Drawing on myriad sources of inspiration from Monsieur Dior’s sister, resistance fighter turned avid botanist Catherine, to the Grand Herbier at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, Maria Grazia Chiuri imagines a series of ethereal dresses, matching separates, and efflorescent accessories enlivened with flourishes of foliage in the style of herbaria. Sprigs of wildflowers are captured in watercolours, then reproduced in embroidery on silk, tulle, cashmere, jacquard, and canvas. Other floral patterns are created through eco-printing, an ageold technique of dyeing textiles wherein pressed flowers are heated so as to imprint their shapes and colours onto fabric. Forget roses, we’d take a bunch of Dior flowers any day.

GET SURREAL Jeremy Scott does nothing by halves – when he lands on a concept, he goes all out. And for Moschino’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection, that means putting a literal, larger than life spin on Pablo Picasso and his expansive oeuvre. Touching on different periods of the artist’s work, Scott transforms Picasso’s experimental Guitar sculpture into a string instrument-shaped dress, and his Au Lapin Agile self-portrait into a sequinned and ruffled Harlequin jumpsuit, while Le Matador is reinterpreted as matching torero sets with bejewelled fringe or tassels. That’s besides a plethora of Picassian motifs like flamenco dancers, minotaurs, and even death (by way of a floor-length, skeleton-traced black dress and veil), with each print skilfully painted by hand before being digitised. The result? A collection that brings new meaning to the term “wearable art”.

L’OFFICIEL STYLE
HOT TROPIC As the saying goes, two is better than one, and Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli would certainly agree. At least, so it seems, given that this season the creative director makes not just one, but two references to the world of art. A study of the work staple white shirt – reimagined as billowing dresses with varying degrees of frills and feathers – nods to the 16th-century painting technique known as grisaille, in which only shades of white and grey are used to create the illusion of relief. In contrast, the collection’s vibrant tropical prints point to post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau, whose naïf visions of jungle scenes and exotic vegetation earned him widespread admiration (albeit only after his death). Palm fronds, hibiscus flowers, anthuriums, and more sprawl across slender columnar silhouettes, inhabited by the occasional macaque and panther, while XXL gold jewellery teem with abstract depictions of crocodiles, monkeys, and cascading leaves.

ON A TRIP A hallucinogenic trip probably isn’t what you’d expect from a decades-old house like Marni, but with Francesco Risso at the helm, psychedelia is indeed the order of the day (or rather, the season). With a fictional drug, Tachitropirina, as the starting point for the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, Risso concocts a mind-bending, multi-hued array of looks covered in manic brushstrokes, which stimulate the senses to near overload. Upcycled textiles like recuperated leather, untreated cotton, and raw-edged taffeta are dyed in shades of fuchsia, tangerine, cobalt, saffron, and kelly green, then hand-painted with frenzied Fauvist renditions of hothouse florals, lending a distinctly trippy feel to the otherwise romantic, neo-Edwardian designs. Delirium has never looked this good.

City Slicker Furla brings back its much-loved Metropolis this season in a renewed guise, with new shapes in fresh tone-on-tone hues WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
Trends may come and go, but the crossbody bag is a forever classic. Less cumbersome than a tote and more chic than a backpack, this wardrobe staple reigns supreme thanks to its hands-free appeal, making it a stylish yet sensible choice for anything and everything from a shopping spree to a night out on the town to a busy commute. The only problem, perhaps, would be the difficulty in deciding between the wealth of options on the market. But Furla makes that choice all too easy with its Metropolis bag, which truly ticks all the right boxes. One of the brand’s most popular designs returns this season in a renewed guise, with several new additions to the Metropolis family. Playing on geometry, the signature squared-off shape

is joined by a rounded silhouette with sleek curves (which also comes in a top-handle version), as well as a compact and cute rectangular iteration. Each pitch-perfect piece is finished with the trademark oversized padlock, and a delicate chain-link strap. Expressing the brand’s playful spirit, colour takes centre stage this season with a lively palette that ranges from black and white to butter yellow, sapphire blue, chilli red, and flame orange. Even the clasp, which usually appears in gold, takes part in the chromatic game in tone-on-tone colours. How’s that for a classic?

Soft Spot Givenchy introduces the Antigona Soft, a supple, slouchy, and stylish take on the Maison’s coveted bag, named after the heroine of Greek mythology WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
A lot has changed in the world of fashion over the past 10 years, but one constant that has remained is the timeless allure of Givenchy’s Antigona bag. First spotted on the Fall/Winter 2010 runway, the Antigona is just as noteworthy as it was a decade ago. A fast favourite of style-setters like Rihanna, Kate Moss, Beyoncé, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the bag sees a 2020 edition in the form of the Antigona Soft. As the “soft” in its name suggests, the latest version offers a more supple take on the classic Boston bag than its sleek and structured elder sibling. Echoing the second-skin sensuality of a well-worn leather coat, the Antigona Soft is defined by fluid lines, enveloping straps, and a generously proportioned body, while retaining the geometry and signature triangle patch of the original. An ample central compartment, side straps with turn-lock fastenings, and removable shoulder strap enhance its work-to-weekend versatility. Elegantly feminine but with a sense of masculine confidence, the Antigona Soft is available in three sizes and a comprehensive selection of colours like pearl grey, midnight blue, and candy pink, as well as directional variations featuring dip-dyed leather, hand-placed studs, and embroidered or printed stripes.

#FERRAGAMOTRIVIA Doing the right thing and practising social distancing can be very lonely at times, which is why Salvatore Ferragamo has released a digital project called Trivia, predicated on the belief that storytelling can help you survive isolation. Part game and part lesson, short anecdotes and interactive quizzes invite you to explore the almost 100 years of house history and the most significant moments in the life of its founder. Brought to life with specially commissioned illustrations, the last instalment of Trivia rolled out a few weeks ago, but you can still view and enjoy the episodes via Ferragamo’s Instagram story highlights under #TRIVIA.

#BOTTEGARESIDENCY Bottega Veneta has launched a virtual residency programme, which it describes as “a theatre of joyous distraction”. Each week, the Bottega Residency sees a cast of friends, muses, and talents celebrate the creative minds and bodies of work that have influenced their lives and touched their souls. First up was Daniel Lee, followed by photographer and frequent collaborator Tyrone Lebon, then Phoebe Reith, the director of development at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, with more to come. On the weekends, the multi-concept platform hosts live music performances, cook-along sessions with rising-star chefs, and movie nights on Sundays. You can catch the Bottega Residency on Instagram,YouTube, Weibo, Spotify, Kakao, Line, and Apple Music, as well as at bottegaveneta.com.
#FONDAZIONEPRADA The Fondazione Prada is not letting the coronavirus get in the way of cultural education. Forced to close its physical doors, the Milanese institution is still welcoming the public in digitally, allowing cyber-visitors to engage and interact with exhibitions through new communication tools on its website and social channels. For example, Glossary explores its archives with a critical eye, while Inner Views offers a virtual tour of three recently-opened exhibitions. Perfect Failures is a cinema project conceived in collaboration with MUBI, while videos on the Accademia Aperta platform retrace all the workshops for children and families from the past five years. Finally, Readings is an audio anthology dedicated to excerpts from books published by the Fondazione Prada, including authors like Massimo Cacciari, Roxana Marcoci, and Udo Kittelmann.
WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
We’re living in some pretty surreal times, aren’t we? In the space of a few weeks, what we would consider as normal has been totally upended by the ongoing pandemic, and as we adjust to the everyday reality of life at home, we are all having to get creative so as to stay safe and sane. Fortunately, many of fashion’s biggest names have stepped up to build communities online, offering a welcome escape from the daily doom and gloom into a world of fashion wonders, and nourishing our minds with a much-needed boost of inspiration. From live-streaming and augmented reality experiences to virtual tours and interactive games, here’s what brands are doing to help us thrive even in challenging times like these.
#FLVFROMHOME Another institution that remains committed to promoting the arts is the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Since people are unable to visit the museum itself, the Fondation is taking its exceptional artistic experience into their homes, by means of the #FLVfromhome programme. Every week, the Fondation hosts three digital events: virtual exhibition tours on Wednesdays, classical music concerts on Fridays, and performances on Sundays. Moreover, with kids on home-based learning, the Fondation also offers a selection of family activities and games that echo its exhibitions, so the whole clan can join in on the fun. Keep an eye out for fresh content on its Facebook page and YouTube channel.
#GUCCICOMMUNITY Besides donating millions of dollars to the fight against COVID-19, Gucci has also introduced a rainbow of digital content to pique the interest of aficionados around the world. Through augmented reality, the Gucci mobile app allows users to “try on” the latest clothes, accessories, and makeup, and to spruce up their spaces with virtual interior decorating. Or you can while away the hours playing video games at the Gucci Arcade, watching fashion shows, and exploring curious corners of the world connected to the brand via Gucci Places and the Gucci Garden. In addition, the luxury house has two podcast series lined up: a cooking series showcasing recipes from the Gucci Osteria, and a collaboration with The Sex Ed discussing all things sexuality.
#MCQUEENMUSIC June’s fashion weeks may be cancelled, but Alexander McQueen has figured out a way to bring the spectacle to you. The British label has created a Spotify channel dedicated to the songs that have soundtracked its fashion shows, so you can close your eyes and pretend that you’re in the front row. Curated by John Gosling, who has worked with Alexander McQueen for over 20 years, the playlists feature everything from classical Mozart compositions to instrumental tracks from Interstellar and Arrival to electronica and techno pop. And there’s more in store, as the brand is also working on music with collaborators like Isobel WallerBridge and the London Contemporary Orchestra.

K CANDY
Straight from the Spring/Summer 2020 runway, the bag has already earned cult favourite status, counting Hailey Bieber, Blackpink’s Rosé, Lucy Boynton, and of course, Gerber herself among its fans. As effortlessly chic as the model who inspired it, the Kaia takes shape as a petite satchel with gently rounded edges, minimalist in design but maximal in impact. Showcasing the iconic YSL logo on the front in silver- or bronze-tone hardware, the bag comes in two sizes – small and mini – and a variety of textures and colours, including smooth leather in black and golden brown, python leather in mottled shades of black, burgundy, tawny, and hunter green, and matte-finish black lizard skin. 26
WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
Kaia Gerber is definitely not your average teenager. The 18-year-old is a fashion scion (her mom is ’90s icon Cindy Crawford and her dad is modelturned-mogul Rande Gerber), a supermodel in the making with several seasons and countless campaigns under her belt, a social media star with over five million followers and counting, a straight-A student, and a muse to Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello. So much so, in fact, that the designer created a bag after her, fittingly named the Kaia.
RIVER DEEP MONTAIGNE HIGH You already slather on sunscreen to shield your skin from harmful rays (and if you don’t, you really should), so what about your eyes? A snazzy pair of sunglasses isn’t merely a style statement, it’s also a vital part of UV protection. Luckily enough, Dior has just what you need to throw all the right shade: its 30 Montaigne sunglasses. Referencing the Maison’s headquarters in Paris, the new sunnies boast an oversized, slightly retro square shape. A lightweight acetate frame is matched with shaded or mirrored lenses providing full UVA/UVB protection, while the hinge on each side is formed from the initials ‘CD’, mimicking the 30 Montaigne handbag. Choose from black, ivory, and tortoiseshell rims with gold temples, or black and white rims with matte metal temples.
TIP TOP Not everybody can be a model, although with Furla, you can at least accessorise like one. The brand’s new top-handle bag is already a favourite with Irina Shayk, spotted multiple times with the supermodel at Milan Fashion Week this past February. The sleek and structured design exudes both timeless sophistication and contemporary charm, and comes in three sizes (mini, small, and regular) and myriad textures from monogram-embossed patent leather to plush velvet to shiny satin.
BASKET CASE A weekend getaway is wishful thinking at the moment, but Dolce & Gabbana might just have the answer to your sun, sand, and surf yearnings. Echoing the tropical theme of its Spring/Summer 2020 collection, the luxury house gets the beach vibes going with the latest interpretation of its Devotion bag, now in summer-ready braided wicker. Woven wholly by hand in a deft display of the brand’s expert craftsmanship, the top-handle bag comes in wicker or wicker and calfskin variations, all embellished with the classic sacro cuore (or sacred heart) clasp on the front.

AS THE STORY GOES You’re never too old for stories, and Alexander McQueen has a pretty sensational one to tell. Picking up where it left off last season, the house writes a fresh chapter in The Story with a new shoulder bag edition. Vintage in look but contemporary in appeal, the understatedly elegant design features a jewellery-inspired chain, and a clever piece of hardware that allows you to carry it over the shoulder or as a clutch. The Story is available in black and white smooth calfskin, with a contrasting suede lining and finishings such as gold eyelets or the instantly recognisable knotted whipstitch.
RICH PICKINGS More is truly more when it comes to Richard Quinn, and his sophomore collection for Moncler Genius is no exception. Voluminous, full-skirted puffer gowns jostle with sharp trapeze dresses and skintight bodysuits, all dipped in an eye-popping palette of rainbow brights and maximalist prints, from psychedelic florals to bold checks to mesmeric zebra stripes. Feathered balaclavas resembling lions’ manes, padded operalength gloves, embellished pumps, and spherical bags round out the marvellously madcap looks. Sixties meets sci-fi skiwear? We didn’t know we needed it till now.
Whether or not you view shopping as an act of self-care, one thing’s for sure – Cartier’s Spring/Summer 2020 eyewear collection will make you feel good and look good. Taking cues from its rich design heritage, the Maison introduces three subtle yet sophisticated styles. The Santos de Cartier range stays true to its namesake watch with details like airplane rivets that dot the top bar, bridge, and hinges of pilot and navigator frames. Meanwhile, the famed feline motif of the Panthère de Cartier is reincarnated as a decorative hinge, enriched with hand-set coloured lacquer in recall of onyx and emerald. And the vintage-inspired Première de Cartier arrives in fresh shapes and hues, such as an unusual angular silhouette with cyclamen-tinted lenses and gadrooned end pieces.

EYE TO EYE
MASK FORCE When the flamboyant multi-millionaire Charles de Beistegui hosted his legendary masquerade at the Palazzo Labia in Venice in 1951, Christian Dior deemed it “the most beautiful evening ball I have seen or ever will see”. Seven decades later, the lavish fete continues to capture the imagination of the Maison, as is evident in the new Dior Grand Bal Masqué series. Distinguished by the signature “Inversé 11½” calibre, wherein the oscillating weight is located on the topside instead of the back, the polished gold dial of each timepiece is exquisitely ornamented with polychromatic precious stones and feathers in the style of elaborate Venetian masks. The case, bezel, and crown are further embellished with round- and baguette-cut diamonds, and matched with an embossed satin strap.
PARIS, JE T’AIME Forget about those touristy T-shirts that read “I heart Paris”. If you’re looking to show some love for the city of lights, you’d be far better off (and far more elegant) with Roger Vivier instead. Namely, its Vivier Loves Paris collection, which pays tribute to the beloved home of the late Monsieur Vivier and the birthplace of the storied label. The words “PaRis LoVe” – emphasising the maison’s initials – are embroidered on shoes and bags, including square-toed mules in gradient pink or monochrome canvas and leather, and a ton sur ton crossbody bag accented with an oversized strass buckle.
FREE YOUR MIND Holding the proud title of the first-ever sneaker to be released by Longchamp, the Freeminder returns for Spring/Summer 2020 in bold and bright new colourways. Treading the fine line between street and chic, the all-occasion shoe flaunts a chunky rubber outsole, zig-zag wave patterns on the upper, and elastic laces that can be adjusted using a silver-toned toggle in the shape of the brand’s classic bamboo closure. Another Longchamp signature, the jockey and racehorse motif, is stamped on the undersole. The Freeminder is available this season in tone-on-tone khaki leather, as well as combinations of knitted mesh and leather in fluorescent blue and yellow or pink and orange.

RADICAL BROMANCE Just when we thought we’d seen it all in the collaboration game, Dries Van Noten pulled off a surprise partnership that made every jaw hit the floor – with Christian Lacroix. The legendary couturier was coaxed out of retirement by Van Noten (over email, no less) for a never-before-seen meeting of minds, and the outcome would make even the most jaded connoisseur weep tears of joy. Striking the perfect balance between Monsieur Lacroix’s indomitable exuberance and Van Noten’s cerebral elegance, the collection is a riotous explosion of feathers, animal prints, polka dots, brocade, flounced skirts, poufed sleeves, and sweeping taffeta trains, yet somehow still infused with a sense of believable wearability. Sadly, the two designers have said this collaboration is a one-off, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a sophomore endeavour anyway.

SUPPLY & DEMAND Trust Virgil Abloh to take something as prosaic as a paper clip and turn it into a precious commodity. The multi-hyphenate recently unveiled a line of gemstone-encrusted paper clips, designed in tandem with Jacob Arabo (aka hip-hop’s king of bling), and it’s the answer to all our stationery dreams. Fittingly called “Office Supplies”, the collection is modelled after the same kind of faux jewellery all kids have made at some point out of boredom, except this time with an ultra-luxe spin. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and money clips are fashioned out of 18-karat white, yellow or rose gold, and studded with glittering diamonds of different colours. Before you can lay your hands on a made-to-order piece, though , you have to fill out a questionnaire first, which will be personally reviewed and approved by Abloh and Arabo (talk about exclusive!).

SOLE MATES It’s hard to believe that Birkenstocks were once considered the sole reserve of grannies and granola eaters. The humble sandal has enjoyed a major glow up in recent years, and now, it’s become even more desirable, thanks to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. The designer duo have teamed up with Birkenstock for a revamp of the brand’s classic two-strap Arizona and three-strap Milano shapes. Taking cues from Proenza Schouler’s sharp urban sensibility, the shoes are rendered in glossy black, white, silver, and ochre specchio leather, and feature oblong patches of velcro in place of the traditional metal buckle, as well as bold contrast stitching. Accompanied by the unrivalled comfort of Birkenstock’s signature cork sole, the (re)designs deliver on-the-go practicality that doesn’t scrimp on style, making them the sandal choice of the season. And in case you were wondering, the answer is yes, they do look dapper when paired with socks.

HIDDEN GEM Think pearls are too staid to have swag? Rei Kawakubo would beg to differ. This season, the iconoclast leads Comme des Garçons on its first-ever foray into fine jewellery with a series of (you guessed it) pearl necklaces, created in collaboration with Mikimoto. Fusing the fashion house’s subversive spirit with the tradition and craftsmanship of the storied jeweller, the capsule consists of seven unisex designs, made from White South Sea or Akoya Mikimoto pearls, and juxtaposed with sterling silver chains and Comme des Garçons charms. Kawakubo’s aim for the collection was to “refrain a little from design” and to “emphasise the beauty of the pearl itself” – these minimalist yet audacious pieces do just that, and they deserve pride of place in your wardrobe (and his).

Chain Reaction The latest timepieces from Cartier put a twist on the conventional chain link motif with torsive, kinetic bracelets of gold and precious stones WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
Only a select few can take the mundane and turn it into magic. And that is exactly what Cartier has done with the latest addition to its horological repertoire. The new Maillon de Cartier puts a twist (literally) on the dime a dozen chain link and transforms the motif into a series of timepieces that are as singular as they are sumptuous. Elongated links of 18-karat gold are offset and aligned on a bias to create a kinetic yet sensuous bracelet, at once edgy and elegant. A hexagonal dial allows case and chain to intertwine in one seamless motion, deftly demonstrating the Maison’s exceptional savoirfaire, while the signature blued-steel, sword-shaped hands that circle the silvered opaline surface nod to the luxury house’s watchmaking heritage.
The Maillon de Cartier makes its debut this month in six stunning combinations of gold and precious stones. The simplest version arrives in yellow gold with a sapphire cabochon crown, while rose gold and white gold variations feature brilliant-cut diamonds on the crown, bezel, case, and bracelet, with an especially opulent iteration fully encrusted with 486 gemstones. There is also a limited and numbered edition of 50 pieces in yellow gold with a black lacquer dial, set with an even more staggering total of 580 diamonds.

New York, New York Harry Winston’s The Avenue collection is a love letter to the Big Apple, inspired and named after the brand’s flagship salon on Fifth Avenue WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
No other city holds as special a place in Harry Winston’s heart as New York. The King of Diamonds was born in the Big Apple, and honed his craft under the watchful eye of his father at the family’s small store on the Upper West Side, just blocks away from the future headquarters of his eponymous jewellery label. Small wonder, then, that the city has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration to the house in the almost nine decades since, as is evident in The Avenue collection, which pays homage to the brand’s storied salon along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Decorative elements of the Art Deco style, popular at the time Harry Winston founded his business in the ’30s, find their echo in the breathtaking timepieces. A sleek, elongated case recalls the vertical emphasis of art-deco architecture, while miniature arches positioned at either end of the dial evoke the stately stone façade of the Fifth Avenue flagship. An octagonal logo appliqué at the 12 o’clock position, on the other hand, alludes not only to the geometry of the style moderne, but also to the emerald-cut favoured by Mr Winston for gemstones.
42
Brought to life in 18-karat rose or white gold, mother-of-pearl, and precious stones, the series boasts a mindboggling array of opulent options, each a true horological masterpiece. For instance, the enduringly elegant Avenue Classic well deserves its appellation, embellished with over a hundred diminutive but dazzling diamonds, and matched with a white alligator leather strap. It also comes in the Classic Aurora version, where a burst of colour is added with baguette-cut sapphires and a glossy blue alligator strap. Inspired by the revolutionary Cluster technique of setting gemstones developed by Harry Winston himself, the Avenue C Mini Lily Cluster features diamonds set in the shape of delicate lily petals, which bloom against an iridescent mother-of-pearl dial. Gorgeously feminine with a youthful touch, the watch is available in pink, brown, and black, among others. And to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the collection, there is the Avenue C Mini Moonphase edition, with a beaded mother-of-pearl dial that showcases brilliant- and baguettecut diamonds, and a complication at 6 o’clock that portrays a moon journeying across a starlit night sky.

Patek Philippe delivers another excellent addition to the Aquanaut family of timepieces with Ref. 5168G WORDS TAN SIOK HOON
What does it take to up the ante of an icon to give it a younger and more dynamic spin? In the case of Patek Philippe’s Aquanaut—a progression from the super coveted Nautilus—it meant rejigging the Nautilus by replacing its integrated bracelet and ears on the case sides with a composite strap and a cleaner profile.
Distinguished as a Patek sports watch, the Aquanaut’s dial boasts an embossed checkerboard pattern as a base that complements the luminescent white gold applied Arabic numerals, applied five-minute markers, and baton-style hour and minute hands. To complete the time and date indications are a sweep seconds hand and a date aperture at 3 o’clock.
Since the men’s Aquanaut was introduced in 1997 in steel and gold with smaller 36 mm dimensions, this Patek classic has evolved to spawn a number of variations, each one equally appealing and eye-catching. In marking the Aquanaut’s 20th anniversary, Patek presented it in white gold for the very first time with a bold and its biggest ever case size of 42.2 mm, paired with a midnight-blue dial and strap.
To catch a glimpse of the timepiece’s inner workings, flip over to its sapphire-crystal caseback for a reveal of the elegant self-winding manufacture movement that orchestrates the Aquanaut’s narration of time. With its 3.3 mm height, the slimness of the calibre perpetuates the watch’s sheer finesse and performance courtesy of its 120 m water-resistance. The composite strap in matching khaki green shade that is ultraresistant to traction, wear, salt water and ultra-violet radiation, features the new patented Aquanaut fold-over clasp that optimises its security whenever it is opened and closed.
At last year’s Baselworld, the white gold “Jumbo” Aquanaut version returned with a head-turning appearance in a khaki green colour scheme, injected with great verve and spirit yet remaining super refined and classy. Its signature rounded octagonal case, echoing that of the Nautilus, benefits aesthetically from both polished and satin finishes, just as its bezel is juxtaposed with vertically satin-finished flats and polished flanks.

Be Connected The latest from TAG Heuer looks like a watch, but works more like your phone WORDS KIMBERLY ONG
TAG Heuer has long been a pioneer in the luxury watch sector, and in 2015, they ushered in a new era of luxury Swiss watchmaking with tech – with the TAG Heuer Connected watch. Five years on, it still proves to be the most innovative digital luxury watch in the market. Recently, the brand released its third generation of its luxury smartwatch, the simply named TAG Heuer Connected, the highest-performing smartwatch the luxury brand has made, and the most mature and refined smartwatch offering yet. Though the TAG Heuer Connected comes from the watchmaking world, it receives its functionality from the latest version of Google’s Wear OS software. Yes, that includes everything from notifications, microphoneenabled Google Translate, Google Pay, virtual assistant, weather forecast, and more. It is also compatible with iOS, so you can use it with any iPhone or Android device.
46
Apart from the daily connected services offered from Wear OS by Google, there are also immersive sports experiences from the TAG Heuer Sports app, with detailed tracking for golf, running, cycling, walking, fitness and other sessions, thanks to the watch’s built-in GPS and heart-rate monitor, among other sensors. This is complemented by the newly developed TAG Heuer mobile companion app that allows for greater personalisation and insights into the wearer’s achievements. Plus, given that it is a smartwatch, it can do so many of the things your phone does but on a smaller screen, while your phone is out of reach. The smartwatch is available in stainless steel and titanium models with a 45mm case, each with a rubberised crown and ceramic bezel. It comes in a 1.4 inch OLED touchscreen, protected by sapphire glass. It looks more like a traditional watch too, taking cues from its classic Carrera watches for a sleeker design. Antennas are also hidden underneath the ceramic bezel, and screen closer to the sapphire glass for a smaller design.

Music is like the air I breathe – it is awareness, it is being able to create something bigger than me, it is a way for me to express myself and to externalise what I feel inside
Musician. Lightworker. Treehugger. Activist. Give peace a chance. Those are the words Paris Jackson chooses for her Instagram bio. When asked to elaborate? “[I’m] a person with a kind heart. [I’m] honest, loyal, motivated, and passionate, and have a positive energy and frequency,” she says. “I’m also a bit of a geek, who loves Star Wars, The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, and all the Marvel movies. I would like to be remembered for my dedication – until death – towards the environment, animals, and human and civil rights. And also as someone who always fought to change the system. Power to the people!” Born in Beverly Hills, California, Jackson is a free spirit. An independence hard-won after years of fighting against obsessive intrusion into her life, given the legacy of one of the most influential families in music history, especially her father, Michael Jackson. She began her career as a model signed to IMG, which also counts Gisele Bündchen, Hailey Bieber, and Gigi and Bella Hadid among its clients, before expanding into music, television, and film.
66
“Music is like the air I breathe – it is awareness, it is being able to create something bigger than me, it is a way for me to express myself and to externalise what I feel inside,” explains Jackson of what she loves about her career. “It’s difficult to put these feelings into words, but the first that comes to mind is gratitude. Gratitude for the chance to be a part of this world. I don’t know how my songs are born, all I know is that I feel the need to get them out, and every time that happens, it is an act of purification. I like writing rock songs, because that’s what I love. But I’m also good at writing emotional songs, acoustic pieces, and folk music.” Together with her partner, Gabriel Glenn, Jackson founded The Soundflowers. “Before Gabriel, I had never had such a profound collaboration with anyone,” she says of the experience. “Our creations are born naturally; they develop organically. We’re currently working on our first album – we have quite a lot of material, and I think it could be ready next fall. Meeting Gabriel was a revelation, thanks to him

I always hated being in the spotlight, but thanks to fashion, I thought I could expand my platform, and instead of helping one person at a time, I could reach thousands of people
I discovered that I was born a musician. Music makes me happy, so I have no choice but to continue playing and singing.” Jackson counts Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin among her style icons. “I love alpha women like them, who have broken down barriers, not only in music, but also in fashion,” she states. “To me they are legendary. I don’t know if there will ever be anyone like them again. I love their style. When I get dressed, my priority is comfort, which is why I like ’70s fashion. It’s comfortable yet stylish.” The choice to be in fashion is an opportunity for Jackson to speak out against the insecurities that the industry induces. “It’s time to fight the unattainable stereotypes created by fashion,” she says. “Unfortunately in the world we live in, it’s practically impossible to feel comfortable with yourself, what with the constant deluge of media and social media. I’m not the only person in my generation who has insecurities, although I’ve learned to accept myself. I wish all girls could feel beautiful in their own skin. Beauty is subjective; there is no single definition. Beauty is not measured in numbers, shapes, sizes, dimensions, or colours. True beauty
70
should be measured by a person’s character, by integrity, intentions, mentality, and words. By how they act and by what’s in their hearts. I’m only human, I’m not a doll. I have my imperfections: acne, cellulite, scars. The idea of perfection is ridiculous, because it’s just a personal opinion.” Prior to becoming a model and musician, Jackson had considered embarking on a career in psychiatry. “I always hated being in the spotlight, but thanks to fashion, I thought I could expand my platform, and instead of helping one person at a time, I could reach thousands of people,” she explains of why she changed her mind. “I must also thank the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which asked me to become an ambassador and so gives me the opportunity to help sick people. Elizabeth was very close to my father; she was my godmother. I learned a lot from her, such as to have respect for others and to love animals.” One recent event in particular inspired her to speak up where possible. “The bushfires in Australia [earlier this year] break my heart. The loss of millions of wildlife is devastating, and sadly it’s not just animals,

there are also people missing. If you can donate, there are various organisations who need our help, like the NSW Rural Fire Service, Country Fire Authority, The Salvation Army Australia, WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation, and WWF Australia. It’s important to spread the word, because from there we can start to act.” So what lies ahead for Paris Jackson? Besides all that’s already been mentioned, she also has a role in The Space Between, directed by Rachel Winters, one of the producers behind Dallas Buyers Club. “It’s set in the rock and roll scene in Los Angeles during the ’90s. Much of what inspires me to change the world comes from cinema and The Beatles. I’ll never forget the first song that had a huge impact on me, In My Life, which has both a beautiful melody and beautiful lyrics. It was played at Kurt Cobain’s memorial. I would also add Fleetwood Mac to my list of top inspirations, along with The Eagles, Future Islands, and Manchester Orchestra.” Despite all that’s going on, Jackson remains optimistic about the future. “Fortunately, a new generation is growing up, and it’s tired of putting up with the status quo – it demands change and honesty from the government,” she declares. “We’re tired of all the lies and unrealistic expectations in politics. Racists, homophobes, and sexists will be overcome by the strength and determination of people with open minds, who are not blinded by ignorance nor by racism.”

Jungle Fever Versace and Rosenthal have joined forces once again on a wildly fabulous collection of homeware, centred on the internet-breaking Jungle print WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
Still can’t get enough of Versace’s Jungle print? We don’t blame you. Two decades after Jennifer Lopez broke the nascent internet in that navelbaring, palm-patterned dress, the print has (rightly) become the stuff of fashion legend. And the good news is that now, thanks to the long-standing partnership between Versace and Rosenthal, you can go wild not only with your wardrobe, but with your home too. The heritage brands have joined forces once again to create a fiercely fab collection of Jungle print porcelain ware, which is honestly just what we need to level up our quarantine lifestyle. Crafted from the finest porcelain, the tropical collection comprises a dinner plate, a service plate, a square bowl, a fluted vase, a scented candle, and an ashtray. Each piece of china is scrupulously decorated using a transfer printing technique, in order to ensure the exact replication of the original design, and then thoroughly polished for a lustrous sheen. A gold-tone border painted by hand along the edges lends an extra touch of finesse, while the signature Medusa head motif – symbolising power, strength, and beauty – adds a final flourish, her penetrating gaze intensified by intricate Barocco-style curlicues.

L’OFFICIEL LIVING
Coping During a Pandemic CEO of various F&B and nightlife establishments (including Lulu’s Lounge and Employee’s Only), Sarissa Rodriguez-Schwartz shares a quick at-home recipe, and how she de-stresses at home WORDS KIMBERLY ONG
What have you done to adapt your businesses to suit the current climate? I am grateful that we hoped for the best but planned for the worst. Early this year, we observed what was happening around the world and how it was affecting F&B, so early on we pivoted to get off of the high commission delivery platforms. I learned how to set up our own internal delivery system, streamlined this on the websites, hired in-house delivery drivers, and sorted out the logistics before social distancing measures were put into place.
With the coronavirus outbreak and the circuit breaker implementation, which sees itself taking on new measures daily, this can be an especially trying period for local F&B owners. The brunt of the new measures has directly affected Sarissa Rodriguez-Schwartz’s businesses. As the CEO and co-founder of SJS Group, the female entrepreneur holds various local establishments familiar to most of us here in Singapore, which includes leading restaurant and nightlife companies, including Bang Bang Nightclub, Lulu’s Lounge, Employees Only Singapore, Pasta Bar, and Papi’s Tacos.
With this idea, we were the first to debut the popular DIY home cooking kits for Pasta Bar and Papi’s Tacos! Our ready-to-bake lasagna trays and fresh pasta kits at Pasta Bar were an immediate hit, and we have since expanded many more items such as Mama’s Baked Pasta al Forno, Fresh Ravioli with Truffle Butter, and of course our full a la carte menu. The DIY fiesta taco kits at Papi’s Tacos proved to be just as popular with build-yourself tacos and pre-mixed margaritas! Is there anything that we as citizens can do to help save F&B in Singapore?
And yet, the New York native, who arrived in Singapore in 2011 to open Pangaea Ultra-Lounge in Marina Bay Sands, remains optimistic and adaptable during these times of uncertainty.
Singapore has really “shown up” for F&B in an incredible way these past few weeks. Continue to support your favourite restaurants and bars by continuing to order direct. Then share, tag, and post your experience online to let them know you appreciate them!
What does a day in a life look like for you now that we are under the Circuit Breaker?
What would you recommend from your menu to order?
Just as busy, if not more so than normal! In these ever-changing times, the majority of the day is spent reacting to consumers, thinking up creative offerings, implementation, execution, marketing, logistics, and of course, planning our finances for now and the future.
My personal favourite is a nocarb vegetarian lasagna tray from Pasta Bar with an add-on of the Claypot Aged Negroni. It’s guiltfree and freezes so well. I also can’t resist ordering the Papi’s
130
Tacos Habanero Chilli Margarita pitcher with the Papi’s Taco Platter. I have also found a new love for my Employees Only Old Fashioned. I order the big bottled cocktail and keep it for the week. What do you do to wind down or treat yourself when you’re able to catch a break? Every day is an incredible challenge, and I realized early on that my typical “winding down” tactics weren’t cutting. I needed something to fully take my mind off things and give me a sense of purpose, so I began taking a course in wellness and nutrition! I study two hours every night and it really gives me something else to focus on. I am blowing through a one-year course right now. By the end of this, I’ll be certified! Any quick at-home recipes to share? My husband’s favourite: low-fat, slow cooker chicken curry for two. Firstly, pressure cook these ingredients for 30 minutes: 1. 1 cup of Moong Dal 2. 2 cups of chopped eggplant 3. 1 cup of chopped carrots 4. 1 cup of chopped long bean 5. 1 box of coconut milk and a 1/2 cup of vegetable stock 6. 1/2 packet of red curry past 7. peppercorns Thereafter, add skinless chicken to pressure cook for another 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Mini Me Dolce & Gabbana’s new Bambino accessories are perfect for pint-sized style stars WORDS ABIGAIL LEONG
You’ve heard of mini bags, but what about mini me bags? Thanks to Dolce & Gabbana, that looks set to be the standout trend of Spring/Summer 2020, at least in the world of kids fashion. The luxury house has unveiled this season’s Bambino collection, and it’s sure to satisfy all your mommy and me, dad and lad needs (hashtag twinning). Several of the brand’s most-loved accessories have been made child-friendly, without compromising on the quality, craftsmanship, or panache that is synonymous with the Dolce & Gabbana name. The vivacious Sicilian spirit inherent to the house is expressed in lush floral prints and bright colourways, splashed across pintsized versions of the Sicily top-handle, the Amore crossbody, and the Kendra tote, as well as lace and satin handbags, wheelie backpacks, and pocket bags, so your little princess will be well equipped for any avocation or adventure. Your young man, on the other hand, will be dashingly dapper in the nylon backpacks and bum bags for bambinos, which come emblazoned with the house logo, royal crown appliqués, and the “millennials star” print. Mini me bags are complemented by mini me shoes, with scaled down interpretations of the now-classic Sorrento, Portofino, Daymaster, and Super Queen/King sneakers for all them hypebeasts in the making. Girls can delight in whimsical prints, allover glitter and rhinestones, organza flower embellishments, and embroidered amore patches (amore means “love” in Italian), while options for boys feature contrasting monochrome and neon hues, along with logomania prints. Summer ready styles arrive in the form of beach sandals and rubber slides, but for a touch more polish, there are also ballerina flats in metallic leather or pastel lace, low-heeled sandals with pearl details, and plush velvet loafers.
