Dear Fashion Week, It’s a very different moment of life that we are experiencing right now. I remember vividly how I had written most of my October issue editor’s notes either in the hotel room during Paris Fashion Week, or in the car on the way to show venues. Fashion weeks are always crazy hectic, a ritual I have not missed for the past 13 years. This season we would need a bit of adjustment as fashion’s front row has moved to the front of our smartphone and laptop screens. Fortunately brands are going all out to make sure editors experience a semblance of a physical fashion week as we have been receiving hard copy invitations, and also refreshments and flowers just like what we used to receive in our hotel rooms or at the hotel’s concierge desk. This pampering as we watch the shows in front of the screen is much appreciated, besides giving us that familiar fashion week moment while reinforcing the brand’s aesthetic, as if we were literally, physically, at the shows. Fendi sent out a box of made-in-Italy pasta to recreate an Italian vibe. And Moschino kept up the quirkiness with an invitation in the shape of a hanger, from which a McDonald’s Happy Meal takeaway box charm dangled. Meanwhile, Paul Andrew from Salvatore Ferragamo transported us to the front row from wherever we are right now by sending us a VR device to be inserted into our smartphones to “watch” the show for a better virtual experience as though we were at the actual show venue. Times have changed, and how is this “phygital” fashion week experience coming across? To be honest, there is nothing like being physically at the shows, watching them in real life. Reviewing the collection on the screen without seeing and touching the actual pieces is just not the same. Clothes are meant to be worn on the human body and so the human touch is very much part and parcel of it all. Till then, Fashion Week. CONTRIBUTORS PAKU SUKUDA Stylist With a broad education spanning film criticism in Poland, fashion marketing in the UK, and Mandarin language in China, Paku Sukuda decided to combine aspects of her diverse studies to become a professional stylist in 2010. Now with a decade of experience in the fashion industry that has taken her all over the globe, she continues her career specialising in styling and art directing high-end conceptual shoots. Aside from her love of fashion, Paku has a deep passion for travel, food and metal music.

CHUAN LOOI Photographer Founder of Yipieyaya Studio, Chuan Looi, a renowned Malaysian fashion photographer and director, has shot a host of editorial spreads and digital campaigns for many fashion brands. In addition to that, he also boasts an impressive clientele base of personalities that include Neelofa, Yuna, Misha Omar and Lawrence Wong. Other achievements include publishing his first book in 2010 featuring Malaysian actress Sinje Lee’s month-long trip to several states in India, as well as holding his first solo exhibition titled LID & LET LIVE in January 2014. CAT YONG Makeup Artist With over 14 years of experience in makeup, Cat Yong is a regular face working on projects with high-profile beauty and fashion brands. She graduated from the Monica Lee Face Art Academy in 2005 and became a bona fide makeup artist widely known for creating stunning looks for both magazines and television. Not only has she contributed her expertise to countless editorial spreads, she has also been professionally involved in local and international films including Crazy Rich Asians. Currently based in Kuala Lumpur, she is constantly reinventing herself and continues to produce impressive works of the beauty art within the industry.

CK LIOW Hairstylist A highly accomplished hairstylist from Kuala Lumpur, CK Liow is best known for creating a variety of unique and distinctive hairdos for both editorial and bridal photoshoots. In 2007, he graduated with a professional diploma in Hair Design from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. From there, his talent has won him several hair awards including Hair Malaysia Competition and I.B.E Hair Competition, while his portfolio continues to grow with his work for local celebrities like Nur Fazura, Zahirah MacWilson and Nelydia Senrose.

1. Gucci:  Designers are granting sacerdotal absolution to the unholiest of (fashion) sins with a new code of divine dressing. Alessandro Michele, for one, gives us a Fanny Lye fix with his 17th century-esque ensemble.

4. Prada:  C onvention a l de sig ns are now revisited and upgraded with a bolder attitude to provide contrast against the inevitably monotonous winter. The sandals at Prada, for instance, are reimagined with bright red exterior.

7. Balenciaga:  Athleisure continues to f i n d i t s p l a c e i n t h e r o s te r. Repurposing its sneaker counterpart’s sock-like design and ultra-articulated molded sole, this crepe jersey bootie will make you want to bend it like Balenciaga.

2. Acne Studios:  Comfor t is key as we head into the more sedate and sobering season. Luckily, designers have packed a plethora of blankets, throws and stoles that seamlessly go from day to night.

5. Giorgio Armani:  As we’re putting on layers upon layers of wool, fur and fleece for the months ahead, add this chunky belt by Giorgio Armani to your cart to keep the waist-accentuation game going.

8. C e l i n e :   C r a f t y c h a i n s a r e ever y where this season—from jewellery to the bags, belts and beyond. Those who wish to give the trend a try may start with this fail-proof chain handle bag in fiery red crocodile skin.

3. Fendi:  Back by popular demand is fun fringe for women on the go. Fendi’s Peekaboo is among the It-bags that has been accorded with the tasselled trim treatment and it comes with golden aiglet finishing.

6. Moschino:  As it turns out, bigger is indeed better. Fall/Winter 2020 saw plenty of rounded, circular silhouettes that make avant-garde seem accessible. Jeremy Scott was ahead of the curve with his gardens of Versailles bubble dress.

9. Dior:  Get ready to turn up the drama as veils are rapidly gaining momentum. Whether it’s clerical, bridal or 1930s old Hollywood—as Dior does it— the headgear is the new definitive statement accessory.

Fashioning The Archetype To perfect their Fall/Winter 2020 vision, designers get in on the act and go to extreme ends of the spectrum, from juxtaposing elements and eras to sticking steadfastly to a singular sensibility.

SAINT LAURENT: THE POWER OF SEDUCTION Creative director Anthony Vaccarello plucks the Saint Laurent femme fatale from the Nineties and reimagines her for 2020. Still the well-mannered girl outwardly swanning around in gilded salons, she soon turns vampy in nocturnal places behind closed doors as she gets entangled in messy and dangerous liaisons sprawled between discipline and pleasure. Ultimately, Vaccarello finds a balance in this tension between control and abandonment through a plethora of

cashmere and corsetry, polka dots and panther, and lace and latex. The rehashing of Mister Saint Laurent’s unusual taste in bourgeoisie is now revealed in the format of Vaccarello’s Version 2.0 of elegance tempered with perversity where he breaks the codes of convention in the embrace of risk. The new Saint Laurent woman is a creature who celebrates herself wholeheartedly and uninhibitedly with her entire arsenal of empowered expressions

PRADA: THE PLURALITY OF WOMEN A fervent feminist of the Milanese intelligentsia, Miuccia Prada has championed her compatriots with a sartorial lexicon that pays tribute to the multiplicity of female identities throughout her creative leadership. Excuse the digression, but this just heightens the anticipation of how the Prada woman will evolve with co-creator Raf Simons entering the scene starting from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, which we’ve just witnessed in gleeful excitement and true

fangirl mode. For the present season, Mrs Prada gives a masterclass as she apposes strength with femininity, power with delicacy. The lesson to be learnt comes from the pairing of masculine tailoring, boxy outerwear and functional nylon and metal as the natural bedfellows of frivolous fringe and beading, girlish bib tops, sheer lingerie layers and bijoux-like accessories. A beautiful testament that women can indeed have it all: glamour and grit, sensuality and substance.

GUCCI: THE RELIGION OF RITUAL This fall/winter season, Alessandro Michele leads a congregation of devoted disciples as their great high priest. Playing their part with precision, the congregation straddles the divide between naughty and nice, dressed in infernal ensembles with BDSM-inspired straps and patent harnesses, alongside angelic pinafores with pristine Peter Pan collars, demure bibs and ruff necklines. Their place of worship at the

temple of Gucci this time around is a revolving circular stage where a behind-the-scenes revelation of the pre-show hair, makeup and styling processes take place. The sacredness in the creation of a fashion show as “an unrepeatable ritual” in the words of Michele is a style statement in as much as the blessedly beautiful collection crafted by his skilful and beyond competent team to dress the faithful of the brand.

MOSCHINO: THE ENERGY OF EXCESS Reflecting on a world trapped in turmoil and dire dilemma, it is not difficult to see how Jeremy Scott had a French Revolution flashback amidst the big picture of political change. With a maximalist backdrop circa the 18th century, the creative director got to work reconstructing Moschino’s sartorial lineup, countered with the radical chic of the Swinging Sixties. His antidote to the stresses plaguing contemporary life is a strong dose of fantasy and

fun, laced lightly with irony. His “Anime Antoinette” time-travels, stepping out in a cornucopia of hyper hues and exaggerated silhouettes, in the likes of farthingales, mini panniers and toile de Jouy alongside hybridised hoodies or moto-jackets, replete with confectionery cocktail dresses to connote the idiocy of those in power. Scott’s take on satire and subversion with extreme theatricality and humour is unbeatable once again.

LOUIS VUITTON: THE MEDLEY OF TIME This season, Nicolas Ghesquière merges his study in the contrasts of the past, present and future into a fashion hybrid of the highest order. But then those familiar with his design history will know this is his forte where he borrows timeless traditions and couture codes and transforms them with the capacity of his postmodern imaginings to be launched into a futuristic orbit. For fall/winter at Louis Vuitton, he appropriates

centuries-old crinolines and ballroom silhouettes and projects them with the current obsession of streetwear and prevalence of performance gear into a repertoire of fashion-forward pieces. Anchoring the runway drama is a Milena Canonerodesigned historic grandstand filled with a 200-member choir. This ingenious anachronism is a Ghesquière trademark that may be out of time but never out of date and style.

The unwavering stance on classicism and minimalism that the brand regenerates to meticulous effect season after season is a secret weapon that keeps its most-desired status and cachet at the apex of luxury. To redefine the maison’s signature of understated affluence, creative head of the women’s universe

Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski lays the foundation of her fall/winter collection with the mantra: What is useful must be beautiful. She then pursues the mission single-mindedly with a repertoire of flawless and buttery-soft leathers configured into sumptuous coats and trenches, joined by chic wraparound midi skirts and flat-front trousers, along with an ensemble of youthful A-line minis, timeless vests and functional blouson jackets.

Prestigious shopping mall Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is officially the place to be as it recently welcomed a number of exciting new entries from our favourite fashion labels.

Bottega Veneta

Level 2 of the mall’s haute couture mecca also witnessed the opening of a newly refurbished Bottega Veneta boutique. First opened in 2011, the store has undergone a makeover and is now rooted in a new sense of openness and modernity. The renovated interior exhibits a theme of lightness with bright white walls covered in Roman travertine-textured plasters while a pale antique oak is used to create linear shelves and glass-topped tables throughout the space. Completing the refreshed décor are distinctive visual elements like brushed brass racks and colourful jelly cubes alongside a rich ochre padded leather bench and woven leather chairs.

Karl Lagerfeld

Over at Level 2, shoppers can immerse themselves in the inspiring world of fashion royalty Karl Lagerfeld as his namesake brand opened its doors to the first standalone store in Malaysia. Exquisitely designed to embody the codes of the brand, the store showcases the full breadth of Karl Lagerfeld’s luxurious and edgy collection for women, from ready-to-wear to bags and footwear. The fashion legend’s strong legacy is reflected throughout the fully furnished space with framed sketches of his work decorating the walls. Bespoke red velvet chairs and wooden floors also raise parallels to the antique French furnishings found at the Karl Lagerfeld maison.

And if you head to the floor above on Level 3, you will find the Chloé boutique perched on that level. Just in time for its Fall 2020 collection, the outlet takes on a contemporary and refined design that creates an experience of personalised luxury. A vast glass screen spanning the entrance offers complete visibility and openness between the store and mall. The curving panels and furniture bring sensuality to the retail outlet’s spacious yet intimate layout. Within its white surroundings punctuated with accents of cream, beige and rose, one can choose from a wide spectrum of ready-to-wear, shoes and even signature perfumes.

adidas Originals

A new adidas Originals store has taken over a space at Level 4, offering the latest statement collections and designer collab pieces. Not only is it the sportswear brand’s largest flagship store in Malaysia, it is also the first to introduce a fresh new concept called “The Collection”. This involves bringing in classic furniture in a modernised way with Malaysian elements brought to life by our local artists. Upon entering, customers will notice light artist Jun Ong’s glowing adidas Trefoil emblem, Electric Wau, erected elegantly at the storefront and window display. Meanwhile, graphic designer Jaemy Choong’s beautiful Batik design can be found decorating the cash desk and floor rug.

Lancel

Located on the same floor not too far from Bottega Veneta is the arrival of French heritage brand Lancel. Finally making its reappearance on local shores, Malaysians can now physically shop for the brand’s leather goods and accessories such as wallets, handbags and key rings. The new store exudes Lancel’s playful French spirit through fresh pops of colours from its vibrant Spring/Summer 2020 collection, set against its elegant chappell green walls. Mellowed mood lighting, gold accents and crisp black steel borders add on to its modern luxury ambience.

7 Deaths of Maria Callas

Bring On The Drama

Burberry’s chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci has collaborated with Marina Abramović on the costume design for her new opera project 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. Reinterpreting the theatrical costumes of opera through a modern lens, Tisci experiments with design craft and techniques, reimagining the historical notions of masculine and feminine style. The project premiered recently at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany, and will soon travel to Berlin, Athens and Paris.

Natural Woman Joining the growing chorus calling for a more sustainable industry, Emporio Armani presents a selection of ready-to-wear and accessories that are crafted in an ethical way for Fall/ Winter 2020. The wool used in the collection, for example, is recycled from local pre-consumer textile waste and scraps. The organic cotton is also grown responsibly, using non-GMO seeds and an organic growing system to fertilise the soil.

The Space Sac à Malice Bag by Hermès The 1988 classic is an icon being reimagined in dazzling fashion in the Hermès’s universe of innovation and functional elegance. BY JOYCE FAN

Creative director Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski has from the outset looked to create a certain baseline for the Hermès wardrobe— one that redefines practicality and wearability with a utilitarian edge. This essentialism was reinforced when she laid out the underlying core ethos for the Fall/Winter 2020 show: “What is beautiful must be useful.” Among the maze of colour-blocked poles set against a stark white background, leathers were presented in a harmonious juxtaposition of clean lines and touches of invigorating hues. Each flattering piece swelled with the French house’s horsey-bourgeoisie heritage while seamlessly combining functionality and flair in the form of pleats, big pockets, buckles and straps.

Offering a series of familiar silhouettes without overplaying the role of flashy embellishments, the accessories too invoked a similar understated sophistication in vibrant primary colours. The 1988 classic Sac à Malice, which directly translates to “bags of mischief”, is undoubtedly a collectible, having gone through numerous reinterpretations over the years. This season, the monsieur calfskin bag sporting a fun galactic motif inspired by space exploration is manifested through Hermès know-how. A rocket in multicoloured leather marquetry shoots through a sky of golden stars towards Mars, partially outlined by the bag’s lacquered clasp and partnered by other planets in the solar system adorning its strap.

This Fall/Winter 2020, Michael Kors wants to take you on an escapade unlike any other to the beloved American countryside. BY CALVIN CHONG

When the invite was sent out to guests, stating the venue, many did not expect to see a country house set up inside the American Stock Exchange in the heart of Wall Street, Manhattan, but that was exactly what Michael Kors himself wanted to give—an escape from the concrete jungle to unplug, slow down and enjoy life. Kors says, “I think we can all relate to feeling a little too plugged in sometimes. This collection explores that idea of getting away from it all, of taking some time to escape into nature and refuel. And of course, since we can’t all move to the countryside, we looked at how you can take that feeling of privacy and cosiness and imbue it with the polish and luxury you need in an urban environment.” As guests stepped in, they were guided to their seats on the skirts of wooden planks that were later turned into the runway

for the models to strut against the enigmatic vocals of Orville Peck, the celebrated gay Canadian country singer. And when we talk about the fall and winter seasons at Michael Kors, we absolutely cannot forget his love for luscious winterappropriate fabrics: cashmere, wool, knits and more. The string of capes fluttering down the runway, especially the captivating camel cape on Kaia Gerber, brings to perspective the desire of all to travel and escape the mundane. From a structured checkered wool cape coat on Freja Beha Erichsen to the glittering little black dress on Bella Hadid and fluffy white denim jacket over camel knits on Adut Akech, you receive the promise of a luxury fashion escape that pampers you with the best of American sportswear that Kors himself is celebrated for.

In The Zone

Longchamp is back again with another energetic and vibrant collection and this time, it is showcased with Manhattan’s iconic skyline as its backdrop. BY CALVIN CHONG

With a view overlooking Hudson River on one side and the everbreathtaking Manhattan skyline on the other, the Longchamp Fall/Winter 2020 show has definitely upped the ante to show us that perfect Parisian-meets-New-Yorker synergy on the 25th floor of Hudson Common. Creative director Sophie Delafontaine has taken herself away from the more conventional view of New York and into the urban, hip and cool neighbourhood on the West Side of Manhattan, where art, fashion and culture take centre stage. The ’70s era of sportswear evidently played the main role in inspiring this collection where an array of separates made appearances on the runway and many of them in leather—a usual suspect for the house of Longchamp as they are first and foremost an accessories brand. From there, we also saw plenty of prints—both geometric and abstract—flaunted on the runway, especially in dresses, coats and knitwear. As the models sauntered down the flight of stairs onto the runway, bewitching music filled the room to create a strange yet relaxing sort of calmness that grounded the buzzing energy

of the city—the exact type of contrast Longchamp strove to achieve being a Parisian house at New York Fashion Week. We spoke to Delafontaine backstage post-show and she said, “It’s all about the Parisian women in New York. I was very inspired by the iconic women of the ’70s like Catherine Deneuve and Carole Bouquet, who were full of character and personality, yet feminine and elegant.” Almost like a second home to Delafontaine, it makes sense that she is able to translate that endless energy of New York so well. She says, “For me, New York is all about freedom and energy. It might be more aggressive but it fits perfectly the softer and more relaxed aesthetic of Paris.” And topping the collection off, we have the accessories, and the protagonist of Fall/Winter 2020, the Longchamp Roseau bag—a sleek silhouette that has been the headliner of Longchamp since the previous season and it has managed to stay in power with new iterations. And this new classic of the Parisian label is also accompanied by other chic sisters like the metallic silver Le Pliage and the Longchamp 1980 crossbody.

If Basquiat Street Could Talk Tapping into the vibrant work and artistic brilliance of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Stuart Vevers revives the relaxed street spirit of downtown New York in the 1980s with an upbeat Fall 2020 collection for Coach. BY JOYCE FAN

If there was one thing that was unmistakably evident from a quick glimpse of the Coach Fall 2020 runway, it was creative director Stuart Vever’s agenda to transport New York back to its bustling ’80s era. Fittingly held under the lofty ceilings of a hidden downtown warehouse on Manhattan’s 12th Avenue, Vever nailed the retro vibe by putting together a decidedly youthful show that not only spotlighted the Big Apple’s freespirited attitude but also the house’s legacy in leather craft. The range exhibited a raw and graphic expression of joyful independence, treating audience to a delightful palette of vivid primary colours and abstract geometric prints on apparel ranging from oversized statement outerwear, day dresses to snap-front midi skirts. The down-to-earth ease of the flat-flat shoes and CitySole sneakers alongside the youthful reimagination of the Legacy Stripe artfully complement while also accentuating the New York-centric collection’s contemporary bent.

Amidst the crafty combination of clashing hues and dynamic silhouettes, the extraordinary artwork of the legendary Jean-Michel Basquiat was hard to miss. The late American artist is widely considered to be one of the most prominent of his generation and his works of art have been a pivotal source of inspiration for the fashion scene. According to Vevers, “Basquiat is the ultimate cultural icon and a symbol of the unorthodox creativity that is nurtured in a place like New York.” The partnership with Basquiat’s estate saw his most distinctive motifs making an appearance across the eclectic collection. This included some of the graffiti prodigy’s critically acclaimed masterpieces such as the 1984 signature Pez Dispenser of a dinosaur wearing a three-point crown and Mecca featuring the Empire State Building—all emblazoned on sweatshirts, blanket-style wool scarves as well as the new, structured mini box bag which is shaped as stackable city blocks.

PEDAL TO THE METAL Heavy-duty chains return to the fashion roster with a new take on bold attitude. Once inflated in proportion and bedazzling with sparkling rhinestones, the linked metal rings are now done with a fair amount of restraint. The necklaces sent down the Saint Laurent runway, for instance, are positively streamlined and matched with everything, from slinky latex dresses to office-bound ensembles, which speak for their versatility.

The polished bracelets at Max Mara echo a similar sentiment as they go swimmingly with the muted cashmere coats, bomber jackets and denim blazers. Chloé and Bottega Veneta, on the other hand, have taken the liberty of stamping the chains with their respective mark. SEXUAL REAWAKENING Blame it on Christian Grey or Timothée Chalamet but the influence of BDSM in fashion has never been so overtly stated as it is today. WOMAN VERSUS WILD Nature is indeed healing. The delicate flowers have outgrown your coat lapels and are now part of the sprawling lush greenery where wild creatures are casually roaming around in town. The plant palooza at Off-White, in particular, sees the brand turning fall’s foliage into luxuriant shoulder-sweeping single earrings that combine stunning sparklers with the brand’s staple arrow motifs.

Over at Balmain, the fascination for deadly animals is manifested in the slew of bejewelled arachnid motifs. The larger-than-life, venomous scorpions are seen hanging from its stinger around the neck or resting over the ear. The influence of nature is also present at Celine and Givenchy, who have reached for the Earth’s crust for her most exquisite, uncut minerals.

Revisit Van Cleef & Arpels’ triumphant expertise with the iconic Zip necklace. BY NIKITA NAWAWI

Before all those diamond-encrusted money clips, pearl hooks and gold vermeil straws, there was the Zip necklace that burst onto the scene for its radical approach to jewellery-making. Van Cleef & Arpels is widely deemed as one of the jewellers, if not the first jeweller, to elevate everyday objects to highjewellery status since it began mining the mundane zipper as inspiration for the aforementioned necklace. Thanks to the Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson, whose legendary love story with King Edward VIII was marked by many creations from Van Cleef & Arpels, the innovative necklace came to fruition in 1950. She was the one who suggested to Renée Puissant, the maison’s then-artistic director, to create a piece based on the zipper after this type of fastener started to appear on garments at the time. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Puissant went back to the drawing board and came up with the original necklace that’s made of two gold ribbons bordered with tiny hooks that fit into one another and embellished with exquisite diamonds.

Granted a freedom of movement like a real slide fastener, the necklace also parades the brand’s savoir faire in crafting transformative jewels as it seamlessly morphs into a bracelet upon closing. To imbue the Zip necklace with that playful element while retaining an impossibly soft feel to the touch is no mean feat. Van Cleef & Arpels has gone above and beyond to accord the necklace with a sense of flexibility as it employs its articulation technique and finesses every detail of the creation to perfect the graceful drape of the piece around the neck and on the wrist. Over the years, the Zip necklace has been revisited in various forms, from being reimagined with monochromatic gems to being injected with Oriental undertones. The Zip Antique necklace, for instance, is a faithful reproduction of the original model as it can be worn as a necklace or bracelet. Meanwhile, the Zip Couture long necklace is designed to adorn a décolleté or a bare back.

A New Day Has Come

An icon, reborn. Van Cleef & Arpels introduces new additions to its Alhambra family. BY NIKITA NAWAWI

In tracing the rich history of Van Cleef & Arpels, one name in particular has never fallen out of fashion: the Alhambra. And while it is true that the success it has enjoyed thus far is largely attributed to the maison’s savoir faire and artistic intelligence, it’s also safe to say that Van Cleef & Arpels lucked out with this one. After all, that’s what Alhambra is all about—luck. Jacques Arpels, the nephew of brand co-founder Estelle Arpels, used to say that one has to believe in luck to be lucky. But seeing is believing, and believing in something as elusive as luck proved to be too hard a concept to grasp for some. To remedy that, the designer had even once collected clovers in his garden and handed them out to his colleagues, along with a copy of John Greenleaf Whittier’s Don’t Quit, to inspire hope and optimism. Little did they know those clovers would soon change the course of the house’s trajectory as Jacques Arpels began adopting the silhouette of a four-leaf clover, a definitive icon of good luck, for his maiden Alhambra creation in 1968. Debuting as a sautoir necklace comprising 20 of the symbolic motifs in creased yellow gold, the Alhambra has over the years

blossomed into a multifaceted character especially with its unconventional gemstone accoutrements. The legacy of the Alhambra is carried on today with the Magic Alhambra necklaces in variations of white gold with chalcedony, yellow gold with blue agate, rose gold with grey mother-ofpearl, and guilloché yellow gold. Rounding up the new batch are the Vintage Alhambra ring in guilloché yellow gold and the Sweet Alhambra watch in guilloché rose gold with pink motherof-pearl—appearing for the first time in the collection. In true Van Cleef & Arpels form, the mother-of-pearl and hard stone motifs here are intricately cut and polished, and just like the predecessors that came before them, they are delicately fringed with polished golden beads. These golden contours have been carefully reworked by hand by master jewellers, before the prongs—rounded for a softer feel—are bent down to hold the motifs in place. Reimagined to better suit the modern-day jewellery lover, the long necklaces can now be converted into a shorter version by doubling the chain. They can alternatively be wrapped around the wrist as bracelets or draped down the back.

ARCHITECTURAL DELIGHT

The Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet, designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) after winning a competition to envision the expansion of the watch brand’s historical premises in 2014, has opened its doors in Vallée de Joux. The contemporary spiralshaped glass pavilion complements the oldest building where Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet set their workshop in 1875. Emerging gracefully from the ground, the high-concept spiral offers a stunning setting for over two centuries of history showcasing more than 300 watches, including feats of complication, miniaturisation and unconventional designs, with the Grandes Complications and Métiers d’Art Ateliers at the heart of the spiral to breathe life into them. Chairwoman of the Board of Directors Jasmine Audemars said, “We wanted visitors to experience our heritage, savoir-faire, cultural origins and openness to the world in a building that would reflect both our rootedness and forward-thinking spirit. But, before all, we wanted to pay tribute to the watchmakers and craftspeople who have made what Audemars Piguet is today, generation after generation.”

Also at Suria KLCC, Chopard has reopened its newly renovated boutique where a “green and sustainable” feature wall, conceptualised by Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and the first of its kind in the region, is the main design highlight. The introduction of live plants to the shopping destination’s 8 m by 17 m steel façade instills a great sense of nature and calmness in the continuing development of the Maison’s link with nature and its concern about the loss of green spaces in the city. This chimes in tandem with Chopard’s pioneering Journey to Sustainable Luxury where 100% Ethical Gold has been offered in its jewellery and watch creations since 2018.

Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils its latest Calibre 101 marvels of miniaturisation, created by the unique alliance between high jewellery and fine watchmaking. BY TAN SIOK HOON

They say necessity is the mother of invention and this certainly rings true for Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 101. From its introduction in 1929 to enable women to discreetly check the time, the world’s smallest movement and one of the world’s oldest—at 14 mm long, less than 5 mm wide and weighing barely one gram—is still in production and flaunts its original architecture and assembly, save the evolution of components and their production. The Calibre 101’s prestige is famously linked to it being worn by Queen Elizabeth II for her coronation in 1953. Proudly made in-house, from each minuscule component to stone setting, the two Calibre 101 High Jewellery watch novelties for 2020: Snowdrop and Bangle, are beautifully borne from a jewelleryled approach where bracelet design and gem-setting style were considered before integrating the cases and movements into the designs. While both bracelets parallel classical high jewellery codes—pink gold and diamonds classified from only IF to VVS— they are a study in contrast in form and character. The delicate manchette-style Snowdrop watch is inspired by the white bell-shaped flowers of Vallee de Joux and features pear-shaped diamonds encircling the dial to form a flower with symmetrical waves of diamonds in the petal pattern throughout the bracelet, along with a griffe setting for the 904 diamonds totalling 20.9 carats for maximum sparkle. Bold yet feminine, the Bangle watch derives inspiration from Art Deco’s graceful geometry and 20th-Century Modernism’s strong forms. Its symmetry-asymmetry interplay is heightened by the 996 diamonds of 19.7 carats of graduated size to emphasise its design, coupled with both griffe and grain settings to elevate 3D and light reflection effects.

On specificity… These pieces are an expression of watchmaking innovation and technicality, and also an expression of our Métiers d’Art in jewellery setting. It’s fantastic to work with a calibre from 1929 and also for the maison to express its jewellery making and Métiers d’Art expertise at the manufacture with a full floor of workshops dedicated to jewellery setting, enamelling, micro painting, guilloche. On miniaturisation… Watchmaking has always been about the challenge and innovation of miniaturisation, from bells and clocks in the beginning to wearable watches. For the 101, the miniaturisation is not so much a complexity or complication of watchmaking, but for the watch to be worn in a very discreet way to meet the needs of ladies back then. Today watchmaking is a world that loves challenges and we continue to look for the ability to be smaller, thinner but with stronger performance— improving the power reserve, precision, reliability for each calibre, and for the minute repeater on top of it having the perfect sound. On supply… The jewellery watches are not numbered but very limited in production as only a few people can assemble the highly complex calibre, and we do maybe a dozen a year and the quantities are very limited. On demand… It comes from ladies all around the world, from New York to Asia. There is a population of ladies who are into mechanical movements with the challenge of the smallest one and the beauty of high jewellery bracelets. We have every year, very small quantities, and again a lot of interest in these timepieces.

This celebration of nature harks back to 2010, the year of Chopard’s 150th anniversary when Scheufele designed 150 Haute Joaillerie creations for the Animal World collection. Among the 2020 Red Carpet collection is an “Owl” jewellery watch, crafted by Chopard’s peerless team in its workshops. Richard Mille transforms the pocket watch, replacing its classicism with ultra-modernity in the making of RM 020 tourbillon pocket watch. BY TAN SIOK HOON

The pocket watch has evolved over hundreds of years as the precursor of the wristwatch, so it is, interestingly, experiencing an unexpected revival currently. In centuries past, the portable pocket watch was the foundation on which horologists began to perfect the art of mechanical watchmaking. It was originally the ultimate emblem of freedom and prestige as it liberated one from having to depend on the public clock tower and the home or office standing clock to tell time. Always ready to spring a surprise in the realm of avant-garde watchmaking, Richard Mille’s RM 020 tourbillon pocket watch is its latest one-of-a-kind time instrument upon a revisit of the Golden Age of timekeepers. This reinterpretation of a classic is bound to satisfy the standards of even the most hard-toplease collectors with all its bells and whistles. For starters, it is the first pocket watch created to debut a non-metallic baseplate made of carbon nanofiber, originally employed in U.S. Air force jets. Never one to rest on its laurels especially as a purveyor of technical materials, Richard MIlle’s isotropic composite material takes carbon nanofibers and molds them under a high pressure of 7,500 N/cm2 and a temperature of 2,000 °C. Its mission is to ensure that the pocket watch’s going train remains stable in a varied spectrum of conditions and temperatures with high mechanical, physical and chemical stability in all directions. The RM 020 is no petite creation and its ample proportions allow the curve and camber of its rectangular case to be enhanced. Its eye-catching rhomboid shaped chain links, borrowing inspiration from Column of the Infinite by 20th-century sculptor Brancusi, contribute to its bold and graphic silhouette. Complementing the RM 020 tourbillon pocket watch is a titanium watch chain featuring a quick attach/ release mechanism that allows it to multitask as a pendulette de bureau with the addition of a desk stand.

With sapphire glass on the front and back, the transparency gives an open view of all the parts of the movement of the pocket watch, afforded by haute horlogerie’s best in Swiss case making and certainly a sight to behold. And naturally to experience or witness the full intrigue of any watchmaking complication, one has to venture within the case where a tourbillon escapement lies for the RM 020 tourbillon pocket watch. Invented in the 19th century for the pocket watch format timepiece, here the mechanism is driven by a double winding barrel with 10 days of power reserve. The RM 20 tourbillon pocket watch’s list of specifications is impressive, boasting bridges in grade 5 titanium and a central bridge in Arcap®. The other features include the function indicator at 4 o’clock which identifies the winding, neutral and hand-setting positions when the crown is pulled out; and additionally, the free-sprung balance with variable inertia that ensures reliability against shocks, and assembly or disassembly, as well as guarantees superior chronometric results. Then there are the spline screws in grade 5 titanium which are used for the bridges and case, with the torquelimiting crown being made from titanium. What then does it take to put together the RM 20 tourbillon pocket watch? In a nutshell, the chain, clasp, crown cover and stand require 580 separate operations entailing 140 finishing operations and 126 control operations. The tally of 189 components comprises 27 parts in the crown, 20 in the crown cover, 16 in the clasp, 65 in the chain and 61 parts in the separate stand. While all iterations of the RM 020 tourbillon pocket watch come in a titanium central case band, the choice of both front and back bezels are available in either 18k red gold, white gold or titanium for this triumphant “time machine” that successfully synthesises an 18th-century horological mandate in combination with 21st-century technology and aesthetics.

For the 25th film in the Bond series, aside from Ana de Armas’s Bond girl, CIA agent Paloma, we welcome the delightful return of savvy MI6 operative Moneypenny, played by English actress Naomie Harris. “I think it’s absolutely brilliant that the women in this movie play such a central role,” says the English actress. “They are fully involved in the action, not damsels in distress that need to be rescued.” Her character gets to wear the refined, classic-looking De Ville Prestige in steel with a hunter green leather strap. DIVINE X KAT VON D Way before the RuPaul’s Drag Race hype, there was Divine. Growing up as an overweight queer in Baltimore during the late 1950s, the legendary icon has long paved the way for future generations of drag queens. It all started when he became the adoring muse for film director John Waters, who was responsible for cult classics like Pink Flamingo and Hairspray as well as giving him the nickname Divine. Donatella Versace walks us through her latest Versace Home offerings that articulate the fashion house’s design vocabulary. BY NIKITA NAWAWI

Extravagant, uber-stylish and thoughtful. Versace Home is a breath of fresh air from the ubiquitous sameness of contemporary décor where minimalism seems to be the name of the game. Embracing its Italian glamour DNA, the brand once again puts its baroque prints, mythical-inspired signatures and knack for the most luxurious materials to good use that come clearly reflected in its newest batch of homeware. How are the new collections different from the previous ones? The aesthetic is typical of the brand’s identity. You’ll notice the neo-classical influences as well as the colour and prints. Today, the lines have become more geometric and the prints are used a lot in the textile or as an element of a given product. The Medusa itself is at the same time a distinctive element and part of the design when it becomes an integral part of a table or a chair. How do you describe your approach in designing home items? I do not sketch. I work with my eyes and my intuition. I take the inspiration in everything I do whether it’s designing a dress, a new print or a piece of furniture. The inspiration here is the story of Versace, our past that meets today and looks to the future. It’s the DNA of the brand, the topicality of the world

we live in, what I see on social media, the books I read or the music I listen to. Is the office line, the Medusa collection, introduced in light of the Covid-19 pandemic? This period has made me think in a different way. Surely people are reconsidering not only the way they work but also the way they live. Workplaces and domestic homes are also becoming increasingly “smart”. Where possible, the rooms will be revised to recreate a working environment within your home. This is the reason why I introduced a new line dedicated to the Home-Office furniture. What is your home workspace like? I love to be surrounded by pieces that have personal meaning to me, so the objects and works of art that I have come with stories attached to them. I like the intimate atmosphere so I often burn the new scented candles created in collaboration with Rosenthal. What’s next for Versace Home? It’s a great time for Versace Home. I don’t exactly know what will happen and I can’t make predictions. What I try to do is create products that are recognisable and current. But seeing the success of the Versace Home collection, we have decided to expand into hotellerie as well as various interior design projects around the world.

The Pursuit Of Happiness Meet Tunku Khalsom and her artistic oeuvre that stems from an appreciation of life and joy. BY JULIA ROXAN

As a self-taught abstract artist and Interior Architecture graduate of Malaysian and B r i t i s h d e s c e n t , Tu n k u K h a l s o m i s r eve r e d f o r h er wo r k w hich ex u d e s fluidity and stunning colour. Embracing the concepts of “Life, Love, and Change”, Khalsom incorporates bright and bold colours which evoke different emotions, whilst having the power to alter mood and thought. With work displayed in the homes of private collectors across Asia, the USA and Greece, Khalsom has also exhibited her work at the Affordable Art Fair Singapore and the Asian Art Platform Gallery, and is currently working on her latest collection alongside a series of private commissions. Where do you call home? I was born in Johor, Malaysia, to a Malay father and a British mother, but grew up in KL with my 3 brothers. All our holidays were spent on our family resort in Pulau Rawa, an amazing little island in south-eastern Malaysia. l moved to the UK when I was 17 and spent 8 years living in London and then university in Brighton. Then after a couple of years back in KL, I moved to Singapore in 2010. All of these places hold a special place in my heart, and I don’t feel like I belong to just one of them.

How have these varied backgrounds and studies influenced your art? Ever since I was quite young, I have always painted and put my artwork up at the resort and my mum still has a lot of the pieces in her home. My background is in Interior Architecture, and I have worked designing hotels and resorts for years now—I feel it has helped me to understand spaces as a whole, and in relation to my art, it has helped me learn composition and balance. When working on commissioned pieces, it can help if I know what the room the art is going in looks like, to see if I can pull in any colours or elements from the room into the piece. I love that art is the perfect way to bring a space together. My design style is very much, “simple base with crazy accessories.” It’s the same with my home and the way I dress. Dress in black, live in colour. Tell us about your fascination for skulls and butterflies which recur in your work? Butterflies have been following me around since I was 16 and got my first tattoo. I’ve always found them to be so effortlessly beautiful, which is the dream in my mind. Since then I have discovered that they have a dark side, and I like the idea of being a surprise and being unexpected, of having grit to your story. I love them for that. As we already know, butterflies are a symbol of change, of metamorphosis, and combined with the skull, you’ve got life, death, change and love—all the things that we experience in life. Also, I just think that they look f*cking cool together.

You use bright and bold colours in your art. How would you describe your style? My style is quite chaotic, there is a lot of texture and movement in my pieces. The textures I use are rough and gritty, they have cracks and crevices—textures that may normally be considered ugly or broken, that combined with lots of colour! I’m obsessed with colour, how one bleeds into the other, how contrasting colours go so well together, how random combinations can totally surprise you. I love to see what happens when you layer colours and textures, and you are never completely sure what you’re going to get. For me, the brighter and the more colourful, the better, but I am learning to balance that out with darker and more neutral colours. In my art, I’m looking for beauty in the chaos, beauty in the imperfections.

Some of his pieces over the years, have been “interesting” to say the least, but you can’t not be in awe of someone who has created such a career through art. His work is so diverse that he has influenced the work of so many different artists, and what they are creating. Don’t they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

You have today collectors around the world: Singapore, Malaysia, London, Brunei, Australia, Greece and in the US. What does that mean for you? It means the world to me that people want my art in their home, it’s such a special feeling knowing that a piece you created is bringing a smile to someone’s face every day, what a privilege. I really just want to fill the world with colour and chaos.

Where can we see some of you work online, and are these for sale? Instagram of course, where you can see what I am currently working on, as I do it. There are process videos and detail shots of my pieces. I also have my own website, which has all the finished and available artwork on it. I am also represented by Addicted Art Gallery here in Singapore, and by Art Beyond Borders in Paris, they both will carry exclusive works. And, yes, pretty much everything is for sale!

The five words that best describe your art? BRIGHT, BOLD, CHAOTIC, CAPTIVATING, COLOUR. Any artist who has inspired you of late on the British art scene? I am loving Nat Bowen—she’s a wonderful artist. Her resin pieces have such rich, vibrant colour and countless layers that create this amazing glow. They are pure joy to look at. Sue Arrowsmith is another amazing British artist—she paints these incredible large-scale detailed plants and flowers on brightcoloured or metallic panels. They are enchanting. Damien Hirst… King of skulls and butterflies, how could I not love him.

What is the role the artist plays in society? Artists are historians of the times, capturing everything from current affairs to the most current colour, and the most current medium. Little pieces of now encapsulated on the “canvas”. Artists bring feelings to a space, they provoke thought and emotion through their work, they bring colour and life and joy. Or they just provide something bloody great to look at!

If you were to name one mentor who has inspired you in your life and as an artist, who would that be? I don’t have one specific mentor, but I do have a couple of wonderful, wonderful people who have helped me along the way. They’ve always been there no matter what, always pushed me and encouraged me and challenged me. They have endured hundreds of photos of crappy paintings and insane ideas, and never complained. Haha, it may have been hard to get a nonbiased critique out of them, but I am so thankful nevertheless. Thank you, thank you, thank you, you know who you are.

Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard lights up the ethical luxury scene as she turns her hand to jewellery design in a project with long-time friend Chopard. “Chopard has accompanied me since my debut as an actress and I share Caroline Scheufele’s commitment to ethics, so this new collaboration is a great way to further strengthen the ties between us,” she said. Uniting her unique style and environmental and social concerns with the maison’s responsibly mined materials and the technical expertise of its artisans, the passionate activist brings a radiant new dimension to Chopard’s Journey to Sustainable Luxury that began in 2013. The Ice Cube Capsule by Marion Cotillard, inspired by the graphic silhouettes and rock spirit of the brand’s Ice Cube collection, are crafted in Fairmined-certified ethical gold and diamonds meeting the best international criteria. Encapsulated in a ring and seven earrings, the Haute Joaillerie

collection flaunts striking yet delicately faceted cubes that can be worn alone or stacked in an effortlessly chic way. While the ring takes on the form of double rings linked by a princess-cut solitaire diamond, the ear jewels, all designed as clips for nonpierced ears like Cotillard’s own, are tailor-made for mixing and matching. They are embodied in a myriad of gold and diamondset rings for the top of the ear and a square-shaped princesscut solitaire diamond for the lobe.
