Congressman Nathaniel Moran: Championing Local Businesses in Longview

In a display of unwavering support for our local businesses, Congressman Nathaniel Moran recently embarked on a tour of two remarkable enterprises right here in Longview: INDEVCO and Louis Morgan Pharmacy #4. His visit underscores the profound impact that visionary leadership can have on our community. Louis Morgan Pharmacy, a beloved local institution, kicked off a day in Longview. He delved into the core of community-based entrepreneurship. The pharmacy’s dedication to personalized care and community well-being aligns perfectly with Congressman Moran’s vision for a prosperous future. His visit was a testament to his commitment to addressing insurance issues experienced by independent pharmacies.

After visiting with nearly 200 key influencers from the business community for lunch Congressman Moran visited INDEVCO. Here he witnessed firsthand the innovative spirit that drives this industry leader. With a commitment to sustainable packaging solutions, INDEVCO is not just a business; it’s a catalyst for positive change. Congressman Moran’s engagement with the company’s leadership further solidified his reputation as a champion of big, bold initiatives, emphasizing the importance of environmentally responsible practices in our ever-evolving business landscape. Congressman Nathaniel Moran’s journey through Longview’s business landscape not only showcased his unwavering support but also highlighted his role as a convener of key stakeholders, bridging the gap between government and business.

“We are grateful for Congressman Moran’s visit to Louis Morgan #4 as it is critical to our existence and success. These visits help our policymakers understand local needs, which are essential for job creation and economic growth. Currently local independent pharmacies are struggling due to nontransparent activities by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Our local Chamber of Commerce has been vital in helping us coordinate visits by our state and federal representatives. Without the Chamber we would have little to no opportunity to show lawmakers how PBM issues are affecting our business.” - Shawn Sams, Louis Morgan Pharmacy To learn more about how to engage in the Chamber’s advocacy work please reach out to Kelly Hall, khall@longviewtx.com. The chamber is working on formalizing the East Texas Coalition with the Tyler, Kilgore, Lindale, and Whitehouse Chambers. The chamber is also planning two workshops for 2024 and a DC Fly-In. Remember, the Chamber’s approach is rooted in the principle of free enterprise capitalism, believing in prosperity, and leading for the next generation. Together, we can shape the future of Longview business landscape and ensure lasting success for our community.

Longview Chamber’s

TECH Council

The Longview Chamber’s Technology Council, established just over a year ago, is at the forefront of empowering its member businesses with cutting-edge tech solutions and knowledge. Chaired by John Andrews of Citadel6, the council has been actively shaping the tech landscape within the Longview community. Under the visionary leadership of John Andrews, the council has introduced a trifecta of initiatives to enrich its members’ tech acumen. First in the lineup is the ‘Tech Talk’ series, a monthly webinar that offers a platform for members to glean insights from industry experts. These hour-long sessions cover a diverse array of topics, ranging from cyber security to the mysteries of the dark web and the wonders of AI.

What makes these initiatives even more exciting is the active involvement of partners from various business sectors. The council’s collaborative approach ensures that the benefits of these events extend far and wide, enhancing the tech ecosystem of Longview. With its commitment to knowledge sharing and community development, the Longview Chamber’s Technology Council is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the realm of technology and innovation.

The pinnacle of their efforts, the ‘Cyber Summit,’ is a semi-annual half-day conference that delves into all things cyber-related. Featuring engaging talks, techrelated vendors, keynote speakers, and even a satisfying lunch, the summit’s debut in 2023 was a resounding success. Plans are already in motion for the 2024 summit, promising to be even more enlightening and dynamic. Taking a bold step towards nurturing the next generation of tech enthusiasts, the council is gearing up for ‘CodeLongview!’ in the Spring of 2024. This event is designed to captivate middle and high school students, immersing them in a four-hour experience within the computer labs of Kilgore College Longview. It’s an invaluable opportunity for young minds to explore the diverse career avenues in the tech sector.

THE CHAMBER: A Champion in Tackling Tough Issues In the heart of Longview, the Chamber of Commerce stands as a steadfast champion in confronting and conquering some of the most pressing challenges facing our community. One such endeavor is the remarkable LongviewREADS! campaign, a bold initiative aimed at ensuring every child’s success by the pivotal 3rd-grade milestone.

Together, we can reverse the alarming statistics and pave the way for a community where every child’s success is not just a hope but a guarantee.

LongviewREADS! has set its sights on uniting educators, businesses, employees, and organizations to bridge the gap in reading proficiency. The campaign’s motivation stems from the alarming statistic that currently plagues our area: 43% of students struggle to read at grade level. This struggle not only affects their education but also places them at a significant economic disadvantage later in life.

In the heart of Longview, the Chamber of Commerce stands as a steadfast champion in confronting and conquering some of the most pressing challenges facing our community. One such endeavor is the remarkable LongviewREADS! campaign, a bold initiative aimed at ensuring every child’s success by the pivotal 3rd-grade milestone.

A powerful belief underscores this initiative: a strong workforce is cultivated by nurturing strong readers. Once our business community recognizes the importance of fostering literacy, they become eager participants in our cause. LongviewREADS! calls upon area employers to rally behind their employees, supporting their engagement in specific opportunities designed to help students achieve their reading goals. The first step in this mission was the launch of longviewreads.com, a dedicated website that serves as an informational hub. This platform outlines the challenges we face and offers a direct connection for employers with our local elementary schools. It’s a virtual space where community leaders can learn about the cause and actively engage in addressing it. However, to truly make a transformative impact, we understand that we must go beyond the digital realm. Workforce shortages are poised to intensify, with U.S. demographics predicting a meager 0.2% annual growth in the labor force from 2024 to 2031. In this context, employers can no longer rely on a flood of new workers to fill vacant positions. Hence, LongviewREADS! is issuing a resounding call to action. We must strengthen the connection between our business community and elementary schools to improve student outcomes by the end of the 3rd grade. It’s a monumental task, but one that we are fully committed to tackling.

longviewreads.com was started in order aid in alleviating the problem. Through this site, employers, employees, parents, and other community members are able to get directed and plugged into different programs to help make a difference.

Through the Chamber’s unique ability to convene influencers and mobilize resources, we are on the path to shaping a brighter future for our children.

IGNITE LONGVIEW’S FUTURE: A Call to Action for Innovation and Progress More than seven decades ago, the visionary leaders of Longview united their resources and aspirations to erect the magnificent Longview Chamber of Commerce building in the heart of our vibrant downtown. As a testament to the strength of community spirit, the original building emerged through collective determination. Over time this cornerstone has seen four expansions, evolving into a sprawling 11,000+ square foot facility.

Notably, the pinnacle of this vision is the emergence of an Innovation HUB- a conduit for propelling Longview into a thriving, technology-driven economy. With the upcoming renovations, we will harness over 7,000 square feet to materialize this ambition. The Innovation HUB shall serve as a catalyst, nurturing start-ups to relentlessly innovate while harnessing the full potential of workplace technology.

Yet, the wear and tear of time have become evident. While we’ve diligently patched the roof holes, tended to HVAC systems, and modernized interiors in 2006, the task remains substantial. The exterior beckons for fresh paint, the back patio, steps, and pergola yearn for rejuvenation. Modern exterior lighting and an advanced security system are indispensable upgrades. Internally, a fresh coat of paint, revitalized flooring, and modernized lighting are essential.

Elevated partnerships with local educational institutions, technology companies, and the Small Business Development Center amplify our capacity to execute a regional, tech-based strategy. Our program, meticulously designed over 13 years, embraces an entrepreneurial ethos with shared office spaces, transformative programs, and galvanizing events. This concept has gained resounding support from key stakeholders, a testament to its viability.

Enhancing Rural Economic Development in Deep East Texas A fundamental aspect of a Chamber of Commerce’s mission is fostering economic development. We serve as the guardians of our local and regional economies. In this context, the Longview Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to collaborating with the broader East Texas region, continuously striving to expand our understanding and prowess in navigating our economic landscape.

David Jochum Chief Operating Officer

Recently, our CEO, Kelly Hall, and I had the privilege of leading Rural Economic Development Forums in 12 counties located in Deep East Texas. We were engaged by the Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation, part of Stephen F. Austin University. While our primary objective was to facilitate discussions and provide recommendations for these counties, we gleaned valuable insights that can be applied right here in Gregg County. Allow me to share these insights with you.

We must continually question, address challenges, and envision the future.

3. Prioritizing Infrastructure: Infrastructure is not a matter to be relegated to the back burner. Due to financial constraints, primarily caused by a diminishing tax base, infrastructure projects have been deferred for too long in many areas. Shockingly, one county even reported still using wooden pipes in parts of its downtown water system. Fortunately, officials in Longview and Gregg County have recognized the importance of infrastructure and made it a priority. This proactive stance sets us apart and enhances our attractiveness to potential industries.

1. Shared Struggles: It comes as no surprise that every county we engaged with faces challenges pertaining to their economic sustainability. These challenges were diverse yet strikingly similar. We also have our share of challenges here in Gregg County, but we are fortunate to have local leadership actively working toward solutions.

2. The Vital Role of Broadband: In today’s digital age, high-speed internet access is a linchpin for economic growth. In each of the 12 rural counties, the battle for relevance and funding intensifies due to their limited access to high-speed internet. The question that resonates is whether financial investments alone are sufficient to guarantee their viability. These counties, akin to ours, possess appealing attributes and could attract individuals seeking an escape from urban life if they had the opportunity to work remotely. However, telecommuting necessitates a robust and dependable internet infrastructure - a deficiency that hampers their appeal to potential residents from neighboring metropolitan areas.

4. The Allure of HEB: While in jest, it’s worth noting that “everyone wants an HEB.” However, it’s essential to realize that the presence of a single company does not guarantee economic growth or magically improve the economy. Economic development encompasses a more extensive spectrum than any one company.

5. Collective Responsibility for Economic Development: Economic development should not rest solely on the shoulders of one entity or individual. The responsibility extends to all of us, as we should be collectively concerned about our economy, not just for the present but also for the future. Creating a secure environment with a high quality of life and a forward-looking vision is a shared endeavor in which we all play a part. Longview and Gregg County are well-positioned for a robust economy in the years to come. However, complacency is not an option. We must continually question, address challenges, and envision the future. The Longview Chamber of Commerce is fully committed to being a proactive and forward-thinking advocate for our community. We trust that all our member organizations and businesses will join us in this endeavor. Together, we can shape a prosperous future for our region.
