Ceasefire to bring development projects to countryside much faster By Priam F. Nepomuceno
MANILA, Aug. 29 (PNA) – With an indefinite ceasefire now in effect between the military and rebels, Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC) head Lt. Gen. Leonardo Guerrero said peace and development projects of the government in the countryside will be able to proceed much faster. “Now that a ceasefire with the CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front) is in effect, we expect the implementation of the government’s peace and development prrograms
in the countryside to proceed much faster,” he said. Guerrero stressed these projects will bring much needed services to remote barangays and will act as catalyst for further growth and development. Quezon province to issue moratorium on cutting coconut trees, charcoal making QUEZON PROVINCE, Aug. 28 (PNA) – The provincial government of Quezon will be issuing a moratorium against cutting of coconut trees and charcoal making process. This was revealed by Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez at the sidelines of the Niyogyugan Festival here saying that the moratorium will be issued next month. “In this festival, we have seen a lot of products that we can derive from a coconut tree. The relative action of my son, Jayjay, and I after this is to issue an order for a moratorium on cutting of trees
and charcoal-making,” Suarez said referring to his son David, who is the incumbent governor of Quezon. Quezon Province is known as one of the country’s leading coconut producers. Suarez, who is a long-term congressman of the province, said the ban of cutting of coconut trees in the province is vital not just to conserve the coconut tree industry but also to protect Quezon from flooding. MANILA, Aug. 29 (PNA) – The Department of Finance (DOF) has put up a website on the proposed implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act 10863, otherwise known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act of 2016 (CMTA). Stakeholders can access information about the IRR and recommend changes or improvements through the microsite at www.dof. gov.ph/cmta.irr, or by emailing the CMTA Project Management Office at cmta.irr.pmo@customs.gov.ph and cmta_irr@dof.gov.ph. Designed to modernize Bureau of Customs (BOC) rules and procedures, the CMTA’s objectives are to facilitate trade, cut red tape and corruption, and improve the delivery of BOC-related services. The easy-to-navigate microsite contains the drafting process, timelines, and guidelines on the crafting of the IRR. AFP lauds NDF declaration of indefinite ceasefire
MANILA, Aug 27 (Mabuhay) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has lauded the decision of the National Democratic Front (NDF) to extend indefinitely its week-long ceasefire in view of its peace talks with the government. “The AFP have noted with elation and optimism this breakthrough in the peace negotiations,” AFP public affairs office chief Col. Edgard Arevalo said. The rebel ceasefire took effect 12:01 a.m. of Aug. 21 and was supposed to end 11:59 p.m. of August 27. It was declared following the release of ranking leaders of the

Erap backs plan to revive Pasig River ferry service By Lily O. Ramos
MANILA, Aug. 29 (PNA) – Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada on Monday expressed support for the Philippine Ports Authority’s (PPA) plan to revive the Pasig River ferry service to make Manila more accessible to commuters and traders. Estrada said he recently met with PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago, who offered to put up ferry terminals in major areas in Manila, including the Quinta Market in Carlos Palanca St. near the Pasig River in Quiapo. The market’s PHP90 million renovation will be completed soon. Santiago, who was appointed to the PPA by President Rodrigo Duterte last July, told Estrada that the agency is ready to finance the revival of the Pasig River ferry service. MANILA, Aug. 29 (PNA) – One of the US Navy’s brand-new littoral combat ship, the USS Forthworth (LCS-3) has arrived in Cebu Sunday. This was the ship’s second port call as they transit back to their homeport of San Diego, California. The LCS is a class of relatively small surface vessels intended for operations in the littoral zone (close to shore) by the United
