TIME GETS MORE RISKY FOR IMMIGRANTS By Abner Galino
The time has become more precarious for immigrants, legal or undocumented, in the United States of America. This is according to immigration lawyers and advocates who participated in a national press call hosted by New America Media and Ready California on Wednesday (February 8). Sally Kinoshita, deputy director of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC), advised undocumented immigrants under detention not to sign any document that they don’t understand; to invoke their rights to remain silent when necessary; and to ask for legal representation. Kinoshita stressed that authorities needed to show warrants or lawful orders
from courts to get inside residences of people. “So if they were not breaking your door, there is no reason for you to open your door to them,” Kinoshita said. Esther Sung, staff attorney at the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), said she was a member of the legal team that successfully worked for the release of two Iraqis held at the Kennedy See RISKY, page 8 Three female protesters stand at the stairs of the Los Angeles City Hall to protest Donald Trump election as president of the United States of America. County execs, advocates for homeless pitch for Measure H By Abner Galino
At the heart of one of Los Angeles’ homeless encampment at the corner of Wall and 6th streets, executives of County agencies and advocates for homeless people joined forces in drumming up support for Measure H on the March 7 ballot. “We know what works but we need the money to keep and expand these strategies that deliver results,” said Chris Ko, director of Homelessness Initiatives at United Way of Greater Los Angeles during a forum organized by the New America Media(-
NAM) on Friday (February 3). Ko and the eight-member panel led by Phil Ansell, director of Los Angeles County’s Homeless Initiative were pitching for support for Measure H which was unanimously approved recently by the LA Board of Supervisors. The ¼-cent County sales tax proposal is expected to generate around $355 million annually for 10 years – money that would be used to reduce and prevent homelessness in the county. PHL foreign reserves hits $81-B in January ’17 By Joann Santiago
MANILA, Feb. 7 (PNA) – Gross international reserves (GIR) of the Philippines rose to USD 81.04 billion in January 2017, higher than the USD 80.7 billion last December and the USD80.7 billion in January 2016, data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Tuesday showed. In a statement, BSP officer-in-charge Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. traced the higher foreign exchange reserves to inflows from the net foreign currency deposits of the national government (NG) with the central bank. Other factors include the revaluation adjustments on the central bank’s gold holdings, following the uptick of gold prices in the international market, and the income

The BSP official said the current level of foreign reserves was enough to cover 9.2 months worth of goods and payments of services and primary income and equivalent to 5.8 times the country’s short-term foreign liabilities based on original maturity. During the same period, net international reserves (NIR) or the difference between the central bank’s foreign reserves and the total short-term debt, rose to USD81.04 billion from month-ago’s USD80.69 billion.
