BONGBONG President reminds voters he’s the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos By Cecil Morella
Manila, Philippines | AFP | Thursday 2/25/2016 – Philippine President Benigno Aquino urged voters Thursday to stamp out the stunning political resurgence of Ferdinand Marcos’ family, as the nation marked 30 years since a “People Power” uprising toppled the late dictator. Imelda sits through mass for victims of husband’s regime Manila, Phili pines | AFP | Thursday 2/25/2016 – Imelda Marcos sat through a memorial mass for victims of her late husband’s regime, after the former Philippines first lady arrived at the wrong church service, witnesses said Thursday. The wheelchair-bound widow, 86, listened Wednesday as a torture victim shared harrowing memories and
a Catholic priest delivered a homily on the lessons of Ferdinand Marcos’ martial-law rule. Ric Malasa, an aide to Marcos, who remains a member of the House of Representatives, told AFP a member of her staff had whispered to her they had turned up at the wrong service at Manila’s popular Redemptorist Church.
But he added Marcos replied: “It’s fine. We’re all praying to the same God.” Human rights groups say tens of thousands of people were jailed and tortured during Ferdinand Marcos’ 20-year military-backed rule, which ended in a bloodless popular revolt that chased the family into US exile See IMELDA, page 6
Rights victims’ anger dims democracy celebrations in PHL By Joel Guinto
Manila, Philippines | AFP | Tuesday 2/23/2016 – The Philippines is this week celebrating 30 years of democracy, but thousands who suffered through the Marcos dictatorship tremble with anger at slow justice and the stunning political ascent of the late strongman’s heir. 12 reasons to contact a bankruptcy attorney The first step to overcoming a debt problem is recognizing it. If worries about your credit cards or a pending foreclosure are keeping you awake at night, you probably already know you’re in over your head. Just cruising along, juggling credit cards, taking from one to pay the other is not the answer. If this describes your situation, then doing nothing just makes the hole bigger and your position more desperate. Here are 12 signs that that could indicate financial stress. 1. You routinely spend more than you earn. 2. You make only the minimum payment required on your credit cards. 3. Your credit limit is maxed on most of your cards. 4. You’re unsure about how much you owe or what may be on your credit report. 5. You skip payments on some bills in order to pay others, or use cash advances on one credit card to pay off another. 6. You find yourself arguing with your spouse about money. 7. You’ve recently been turned down for credit or a loan. 8. You panic when faced with an unexpected expense, such as a car repair. 9. You owe more on your car than it’s worth. 10. There’s no more equity in your house. 11. Creditors are calling you about overdue bills. 12. You’re thinking lately about filing for bankruptcy. Though it is a common enough word, what exactly does bankruptcy mean? And what are its implications? As is to be expected, filing for bankruptcy is a complicated process but before such a step is taken it is essential to understand exactly what it is all about. Simply put, bankruptcy can be defined as the legal process thorough which individuals or businesses in financial trouble are able to work out their debts and pay them out under the protection of the bankruptcy court. Often “liquidations” or “reorganizations” are the words that are used to sum up the process that unfolds when you file for bankruptcy. The two kinds of bankruptcy that you can file for are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. There are various factors that would determine whether you should opt for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. Through Chapter 7 Bankruptcy you liquidate all unsecured debt, providing any assets you may have are exempt under bankruptcy rules. Most people never lose anything, because they don’t have any non-exempt assets. In the event
debtor is making too much money, they choose Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, which is the reorganization type of bankruptcy. The debtor is allowed three to five years over which to pay back a portion of the debts, based on disposable income. Say that you have $100.00 in disposable income. You would have to pay that into a plan for 60 months. After 60 months, the balance of your debts would be discharged in full, even if they are far from being paid off. One should keep in mind that there are intricate details to this legal process that need to be taken into consideration before decisions are made to file for bankruptcy. Who qualifies? Which kind would apply to you? Will you be able to keep all of your property? There are many such questions that arise in such a situation. In this situation, you need to consult with an experienced bankruptcy law firm that can guide you through these complicated decisions and procedures. Filing for bankruptcy may not be the solution to all your financial problems though. In fact, bankruptcy does not cover all debts. For example, debts related to child and spouse support, or taxes are not covered in bankruptcy. Do you have a Co-signer? Before filing for bankruptcy it is important to know that your co-signer might be held liable for the cosigned debt. However, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy may protect your co-signer, since it offers a partial repayment plan. With a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, only the debtor is protected and the co-signer would be liable for the debt. In this case, the creditors have the right to demand that your co-signer pay off the outstanding payments. Under chapter 13 bankruptcy, as long as the bankruptcy plan is active the co-signers will receive a stay for the duration of the debtors payment plan. At the end of the plan, a co-signer could once again liable to pay any outstanding payments, even though the debt is discharged in favor of the bankruptcy debtor. Don’t lose another sleepless night! Comelec committed abuses vs Poe, SC told MANILA, Feb 23 (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has shown its “clear bias and partiality” against Senator Grace Poe based on abuses it has conducted leading to the cancellation of her certificate of candidacy (COC), her camp told the Supreme Court (SC). In her 331-page memoranda submitted to the high court, Poe, through her legal team led by Atty. Alexander J. Poblador said their petition to reverse the Comelec’s decisions should be granted to correct the “patent violations of the Constitution or laws and settled jurisprudence on matters raised before the Comelec.” Poblador said that for one, Comelec refused to consolidate the disqualification cases against Poe filed by Atty. Estrella Elamparo and the case filed by former Senator Francisco “Kit” Tatad, former University of the East Law Dean Amado Valdez and Political Science Professor Antonio Contreras when both cases involved the same sets of facts. Poe’s lawyers added that Comelec also insisted “on an impossible burden of certainty in the process of requiring petitioner (Poe) evidence [which is] obviously not available.”

Mar Roxas: Shun candidates who want martial law return
LAUR, Nueva Ecija, Feb 24 (Mabuhay) – Administration standard bearer Manuel “Mar Roxas II on Wednesday urged the public to shun candidates running in the national elections who want to return to an abusive dictatorship. “May kasabihan tayo, ‘Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.’ Kung kakalimutan natin ang lahat ng mga leksyon ng ating mga karanasan, ng ating mga nakalipas ay mawawala tayo, malilito tayo, maloloko tayo, Roxas told reporters in an interview. “At may mga tao dyan na nais bumalik tayo sa nakaraan, bumalik tayo sa dating sistema at mapigil ang ating pagusad, he added. Roxas and his running mate, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo, stopped by at the Aquino-Diokno memorial shrine in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija on the eve of the EDSA People Power Revolution. It was in this facility where opposition senators Benigno “Ninoy Aquino, Jr. and Jose “Pepe Diokno were brought for a one-month solitary confinement during the martial law period. Roxas said seeing the detention facility reminded him of Aquino and Diokno’s sacrifices for the country. “Hindi sila tumiklop. Residing in the U.S. Indefinitely through an E-1/E-2 Visa The E nonimmigrant visa category allows nationals of countries who are a party to certain treaties with the United States to receive visa benefits in order to invest in a US business or conduct trade between the foreign treaty country and the US. The Philippines entered into such a treaty with the US as of September 5, 1955, thereby entitling Philippine nationals to receiving E nonimmigrant visas. An individual is entitled to obtain an E-1 treaty trader visa if he is substantially conducting trade primarily between the US and the foreign country. An individual is entitled to an E-2 treaty investor visa if he is seeking to develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which he has invested or is actively in the process of investing a substantial amount of capital. Certain employees of an E-1 treaty trader or E-2 investor may also obtain E visas. The requirements for the E-1 treaty trader visa are as follows: (1) The applicant must be a national of a treaty country; (2) The trading firm sponsoring the applicant must have the nationality of the treaty country; (3) The international trade must be “substantialâ€? in the sense that there is a sizable and continuing volume of trade, regardless of the size of the company; (4) The trade must be principally between the US and the treaty country, which means that more than 50% of the international trade involved must be between the US and the country of the applicant’s nationality; (5) Trade means the international exchange of goods, services or technology, which can include activities such as international banking, insurance, monies, transportation, tourism, communications, data processing, advertising, accounting, design and engineering, management consulting, technology and its transfer, and some news gathering activities; and (6) The applicant must be employed in a supervisory or executive capacity, or possess highly specialized skills essential to the efficient operation of the firm. Applicants for an E-1 visa who trade in goods should be able to submit documentation such as bills of lading, customs receipts, letters of credit, insurance papers documenting commodities imported, purchase orders, carrier inventories, trade brochures, sales contracts, and other traditional business documents. Applicants for an E-1 visa who trade in services should be able to submit documentation such as a summary or audit of international accounts and transactions, and, if necessary for verification, contracts demonstrating
the nature of the trade/service activity, the value/cost of such activity, the time of performance of these activities, as well as other conditions of the transaction. To qualify for an E-2 treaty investor visa, the following requirements must be met: (1) The investor, whether a person or corporation, must be a national of a treaty country; (2) The investment must be substantial based on a “proportionality test that compares the amount of funds invested against the fair market value of the established business; (3) The investment must be active and at risk, not merely speculative or idle; (4) The investment may not be marginal, which means that it must generate significantly more income than just to provide a living to the investor and family, or it must have a significant economic impact in the US; and (5) The investor must be coming to the US solely to develop and direct the enterprise. If the applicant is not the principal investor, he must be employed in a supervisory, executive, or highly specialized skill capacity, and must also be the same nationality as the principal alien employer. The spouse and unmarried minor children of E-1 and E-2 visa holders are also eligible to obtain E-1 and E-2 visas to reside with the principal visa holder in the US. Spouses are also eligible to obtain work authorizations that allow them to work for any Individuals granted an E-1 or E-2 visa are generally given authorization to remain in the US for periods of two years. An unlimited number of extensions are available at two-year increments so long as the trade or investment is still ongoing. Accordingly, individuals can receive the benefit of working and residing in the United States for a lengthy period of time based entirely on their hard work, dedication and effort. Young client seeks Chapter 7 relief for $70K credit card debt Clients are spouses who own and run a business together. They own an S-corporation that has been in business for 20 years. They have 10 employees. An S-corporation, as distinguished from a C-corporation, is one where the profits of the business “flows through to the 1040 of the individuals, unlike a C-corporation that pays its own income tax based on corporate profits. For instance, if the S-corporation business makes a net profit of $100K for 2015, that net profit is added to the gross income of the stockholders of the S-corporation. If you own 20% of that S-corporation, you will have to add $20K to your gross income for 2015 in addition to your income from all other sources. Whereas if that were a C-corporation, the corporation would pay income tax by itself on the $100K profit for 2015, and either keep the net profit after tax in the coffers of the corporation as retained earnings, or distribute the net profit to the stockholders, in which case, the profit distribution becomes a dividend to the stockholder which the stockholders declares as dividend income in his individual tax return. Other than this differentiation in the treatment of corporate profit, both S and C-corporations have all the same benefits that a corporation provides. Both S and C corporations are legally separate entities from their stockholders. Liabilities of the S and C corporations and deemed liabilities of the corporations themselves and do not transfer to the individual stockholders. This is called the “corporate shield given to stockholders. For all intents and purposes by law, the corporation is treated as a separate and distinct “legal person from the individual stockholders. For example, Volkswagen was recently found cheating on emissions. The company programmed the computers in their diesel cars to act in a way that it appeared that emission standards were being complied with. In fact, they were not. In other words, Volkswagen, the corporation told a bold face
lie. When it was found out, there was a big scandal and its stock tanked. Massive penalties for fraud soon followed levied by the Feds in the billions. There were multiple lawsuits filed against Volkswagen. Buyers wanted to return what they bought. If you were a stockholder of Volkswagen, can you be sued for this corporate fraud with millions of victims worldwide? If you were a stockholder of Volkswagen, do you have to worry about being sued by the victims because you own shares in Volkswagen, certainly not. Because the fact that Volkswagen is a corporation means that the company is legally a separate and distinct entity from you as a shareholder. Therefore, you cannot be sued as a stockholder of Volkswagen for the corporate wrongdoing of the company. This is called ‘corporate legal fiction’ which is actually quite a brilliant idea that allows free enterprise to prosper. Without this ‘corporate shield and legal fiction’ people will be afraid to invest in businesses for fear of having their individual assets exposed to liability for anything that goes wrong with the corporation that causes damage In clients’ case, their business was doing well for 17 years. But the last 3 years was bad. Clients had to refinance their house to put in another $80K in the corporation to finance the loss of the last 3 years. Refinancing their house was actually making a bad situation worse. Why suck out the equity in your house causing you to pay a higher mortgage to keep a business that is hemorrhaging to keep it afloat? You’re letting the business loss drag your house down too. The corpora-
tion is supposed to be separate from your personal assets, but by refinancing your house, you combine the two together. In other words, if the business is sinking, why let your house sink with it too? You business can sink and die, that happens many, many times in the world of business. But to link your house to the business, that’s the same as getting a gun and shooting yourself in the leg. Clients’ S-corporation owes $120K of bank loans and suppliers credit, which it can no longer pay. Clients decided to discontinue the business because of mounting losses. I ask them if they want to continue the business with a Chapter 11 and perhaps get away without paying any of the $120K. They decide for a Chapter 7 because too much competition has made the future of the business very bleak. Will the S-corporation Chapter 7 affect the stockholders as individuals, of course it will not. The stockholders keep their good credit and everything else. They are not affected by the bankruptcy of the S-corporation, because after all, even an S-corporation is a legally separate and distinct entity under the law, therefore, it can file a bankruptcy by itself without affecting the individual stockholders. YOUNG CLIENT SEEKS CHAPTER 7 RELIEF FOR $70K CREDIT CARDS Client is 33, and recently married. He also dabbled into business, using his credit cards to fund the business. The business never turned a profit. He maxed out his credit cards at $70K. One credit card sued him to collect $14K of credit card debt. At that time, he was still optimistic that his business would turn around and become profitable. But that was not to be. He entered into a stipulated judgment agreeing to pay $200 a 1BUSINESS OWNER FILES FOR CHAPTER 7 AS LOSSES MOUNT; YOUNG CLIENT SEEKS CHAPTER 7 RELIEF FOR $70K CREDIT CARDS_ lvmonth until the $14K was fully paid off. He just got married and wants a
fresh start without debt, and opts for Chapter 7 relief. This will wipe out the $70K of credit card debt including the $14K stipulated judgment. Without debilitating debt, client can look forward to a fresh, new and productive life, and can even start another business that has a better chance of being successful from all the mistakes he learned from his failed business. This is what happened to Mr. Walt Disney who also sought Chapter 7 relief twice before his Disneyland business became successful. From two bankruptcies, Disney is now a global multi-billion dollar business with the new $6.0 billion theme park opening in Shanghai this June. Who knows, my young client may be another Disney in the making, learning from his previous mistakes. Maybe 10 years from now, client may become a business tycoon. Further, client’s decision to seek chapter 7 relief is completely confidential. Nobody needs to know unless he discloses it himself. His new wife is totally not affected even if she has her own assets. Those are her sole and separate assets. “A FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE RESTING ON THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE, WHICH GOD (ADONAI/ YAHWEH), WHO DOES NOT LIE, PROMISED BEFORE, THE BEGINNING OF TIME.â€? fled to the United States. But in another part of the city, those who were tortured and imprisoned under martial law will hold their own rally to mourn a lack of justice. They will also try to raise the alarm over the dictator’s only son and namesake from getting elected vice-president, as he has surged to the top of polls with national elections less than three months away. “We are angry, disappointed, frustrated at the system because until now there has been no justice,” said Marie Hilao-Enriquez, vice president of Selda, a group of people who were detained by Marcos’s security forces. “The Marcoses have not returned what they stole and they are rewriting history,” said Enriquez, who was
imprisoned for two years and whose activist sister was believed killed by government forces. Treasure hunt Philippine parliament passed a law in 2013 to distribute money that was plundered by the Marcos family to human rights victims. However, out of $10 billion that the government estimates to have been plundered, it covers only $210 million that was discovered in a Swiss bank account. The government says it has recovered close to $4 billion worth of assets, but can not distribute the vast bulk of it because of legal challenges by the Marcoses and their cronies. Meanwhile, an arduous process to verify 75,000 claims will not be finished until 2018, and only then can
the victims finally get much-delayed compensation. The victims have submitted medical records, prison logs and photos of themselves bruised or behind bars, according to Lina Sarmiento, head of the Human Rights Victims Claims Board tasked to verify the applications. Although the money may not be a lot when it is finally distributed, she said it would be an important symbol of justice. “More than the compensation for the victims, this is a recognition from the state, giving them back their dignity because they suffered for democracy,” Sarmiento told AFP.

“This is long overdue.” The need to finally recognise and compensate human rights victims is not lost on the government claims board. A timer that counts down to the number of days until the board’s 2018 deadline to pay all approved claims is installed on every computer screen in their spartan office. Marcos resurgence Meanwhile, Ferdinand Marcos Jnr is on the verge of cementing a remarkable comeback for the family. 30 years ago Thursday. The current authorities now estimate the family plundered $10 billion from state coffers, which allowed the flamboyant first lady to live a jetsetting lifestyle in which she amassed hundreds of pairs of shoes as well as jewellery and pieces of art. But mass-goers, many of them campaigners for the rights of people who suffered imprisonment and torture during the Marcos regime, showed no sign of disrespect to the widow at the service, according to Carlito Latorre, a lay missionary. “One of the victims, a man, shared how he lost his sense of hearing from
the torture,” Latorre told AFP. “The priest said martial law must not be repeated and its lessons must not be forgotten,” Latorre said, adding Marcos left abruptly after the homily. “We’re hoping she listened to the sermon and that she would not disregard it,” he added. Ferdinand Marcos died in Hawaii in 1989, but his heirs returned to the Philippines in the early 1990s to set in train a stunning political comeback. His charismatic and unrepentant son Ferdinand Marcos Jr stands a good chance of being elected vice president in the May elections, pollsters say.

cos families, two of the most powerful clans in a nation famed for elite dynasty rule. Human rights groups say tens of thousands were thrown in prison and tortured during the elder Marcos’ 20-year rule, and the government estimates the family plundered $10 billion from state coffers. But pollsters say a young electorate is likely to help the charismatic and unrepentant Ferdinand Marcos Jnr become vice president in May elections. “Mr. Marcos’ rule was not the golden age. It was a very painful chapter of our history,” Aquino told about 3,000 students and government workers at a ceremony marking the 1986 uprising. Aquino’s late father and namesake was shot dead by pro-Marcos soldiers and police at Manila airport in 1983 as he tried to return from US exile to lead opposition to the dictator. Public outrage over the murder ignited the revolution, which was led by the assassinated democracy hero’s wife, Corazon Aquino. It forced the Marcos family into US exile as the soft-spoken and still revered Corazon came to power. The Marcos patriarch died in Hawaii three years later. But the Marcos family was allowed to return in the early 1990s and its controversial matriarch, Imelda, set in train a remarkable political comeback for herself and her children. The clan held mostly local positions in its home provinces until Marcos Jr won a seat in the Senate in 2010, gaining a platform for a tilt at the country’s second most powerful position. ‘A period of darkness’ “Martial law really happened. There was a dictator who, with his family and cronies, monopolized power in exchange for the very lives and freedom of Filipinos,” Aquino
said on Thursday. “If he (Marcos son) does not even realize what wrongs were committed by his family, what is our assurance that he will not repeat them?” Addressing the electorate, where nearly half are aged 35 or younger, according to official data, Aquino said: “Let us work together to ensure the Philippines will no longer go through a period of darkness.” Hundreds of Marcos regime torture victims vowed on Monday to hound the son’s electoral effort. Their spokesman said they hoped to stop the attempt to “rewrite history and bring back his father’s abusive leadership framework”. Marcos Jnr has repeatedly said his family has nothing to apologize for, portraying his father’s rule as a time of economic prosperity. He has also gained popularity for helping to derail Aquino’s efforts to strike peace with Muslim rebels. Marcos campaign manager Jonathan de la Cruz criticized the campaign against him, urging foes to instead solve problems faced by the electorate including poverty, lack of jobs, crime, and bad rail service. “Instead of focusing on the problems now before us and which, if left unresolved, will hound and hobble our future generations, they have chosen to demonize Senator Marcos,” Cruz said in a statement. Aquino, who remains reasonably popular, is barred by the constitution from standing for a second six-year term. Vice presidents are elected separately in the Philippines. Aquino’s choices for president and vice president, both lagging in the polls, are widely held as lacklustre politicians. The race to succeed Aquino has Vice President Jejomar Binay holding a slim lead over rookie Senator Grace Poe and Rodrigo Duterte, a tough anti-crime regional politician.

Leni: I didn’t join Liberal Party for money LAUR, Nueva Ecija, Feb 24 (Mabuhay) – Joining the ruling Liberal Party (LP) should come without expectations, administration vice-presidential candidate Leni Robredo said on Wednesday, as she dismissed a newspaper report in Bicol that said she received P500 million to run alongside administration standard bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II. Robredo said the allegation from the local paper was just “black propaganda” from political foes. “May black propaganda na lumabas na binigyan daw ako ng P500 million at palagay ko kayo na rin makakapagsabi, kung P500 million siguro, matutulog na lamang ako,” Robredo said. “Kung titingnan ninyo ang newspaper na pinanggalingan noon ay
newspaper ng kalaban sa politika kaya hindi na dapat patulan,” Robredo, the incumbent congresswoman of Camarines Sur’s third district, said. Robredo said LP wasn’t a party of financial favors but of the same political beliefs. “Mula noong sa asawa ko pa hanggang ngayon, alam naman ng aking mga kasamahan na ang samahan namin ay hindi talaga tungkol sa pera,” she said. The same report said Robredo’s allies in the local level have jumped ship because of the lack of financial support. “Kung ang dahilan kaya ka sumama sa partido ay dahil sa expectation sa pera, parang hindi rin iyon naaayon sa aming paniniwala,” Robredo added.(MNS)
Mar Roxas asks gov’t to ensure credible May polls San Miguel, BULACAN, Feb 23 (Mabuhay) – The government must ensure a clean and credible elections, presidential candidate Manuel “Mar” Roxas II said Tuesday, following a Pulse Asia survey showing nearly four in 10 Filipinos expect cheating to happen in May. “Well, nakakalungkot ‘yan pero ako hindi ako mandaraya, hindi ako magnanakaw at hindi ako sinungaling.’Yan ang aking track record sa 20 taong mahigit sa panunungkulan bilang lingkod bayan at kilala ako ng ating mga kababayan,” Roxas, former Interior secretary, told reporters. “Ako nga ang nadaya nitong nakaraang eleksyon, kaya kabahagi ako sa ating mga kababayan na dapat malinis at kapani-paniwala
itong halalan,” Roxas added. Roxas was referring to the 2010 vice-presidential race. He lost to then Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay by a slim margin of 700,000 votes. He filed an election protest back then questioning the counting of null votes in the contested precincts. In October last year, Binay asked the Supreme Court to junk the protest saying Roxas seemed to have already lost interest in the case. Roxas, however, said he did not plan on withdrawing the protest. A Pulse Asia survey conducted from January 24 to 28 showed 39 percent of Filipinos expect cheating to take place during the elections, with vote buying as the most popular form among the respondents.

VP Binay, Honasan skip EDSA anniv rites, woo vote-rich Quezon instead TIAONG, Quezon, Feb 25 (Mabuhay) – Instead of joining the 30th anniversary of People Power Revolution on EDSA, Vice President Jejomar Binay, his running mate Sen. Gringo Honasan, and their senatorial slate decided to woo vote-rich Quezon province. In his speech during the campaign sortie here, Honasan said they thought it would be better to be with the people than attend the EDSA program where most of the attendees did not even join the historic People Power happened in 1986. “Imbes na makipagsiksikan sa karamihan na wala naman doon noong People Power Revolution ay pinili namin na makapiling kayo,”
he said. Binay, for his part, said he and Honasan are in the same camp not only today but especially during the EDSA revolution. “Hindi lang kami ngayon nagsama ni Sen. Honasan. Ang maipagmamalaki po namin, sa lahat ng kandidatong presidente at vice president ngayon [ay] kami ay tahasang alam niyo naman na magkasama sa EDSA,” he said. “Ang ipinaglaban namin ay dapat tapusin na ang kahirapan dahil sumasama ang pamumuno noong panahong iyon,” Binay added. Quezon Governor David Suarez said the province is 110 percent behind the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) slate.

Saban presents an evening of nostalgic songs with “The Letttermen” This author was grateful for the spur-of-the moment invite of media colleague, Evelyn Portugal this past weekend, to watch the one-night concert of The Lettermen at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Along with another media colleague, Lou Sabas we arrived at the fully-packed theatre and was surprised to see almost one-third of the audience were babyboomer Pinoys. The current pop music vocal trio known as “The Lettermen” was composed of Tony Butala, Donovan Tea and Bobby Poynton. The trio was originally formed in the late 50’s by Mike Barnett, Dick Stewart and Tony Butala. Their group was named by Jackie Barnett (who was the chief comedy writer of the Jimmy Durante TV Show) when they auditioned for
the “Newcomers of 1928” revue. The “Newcomers of 1928” revue was shown at sell-out audiences at the then famous Desert Inn Hotel in Las Vegas, from February 29, 1958, which also starred Buster Keaton, Rudy Valee, Harry Richman, Paul Whitman and Fifi D’Orsay, which was shown in ‘Vegas but continued on a six-week stint at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Though “The Lettermen” trio were such a hit everywhere they

went, Butala remained the “lone consistent” Lettermen, eventually replacing Barnett and Russell with Gary Clarke and Jerry Paul. However, after a few months, Gary Clarke left the group and he was replaced by Jim Pike, who “envisioned” the group where “each member was an excellent singer, while at the same time, blending in as a great group singer.” Subsequently, Jerry Paul left and was replaced by Bob Engemann, a singer whom Jim Pike met while attending Brigham Young University, a few years earlier. Initially, both Pike and Engemann hit it off and left for Los Angeles where they sang together, until Engemann had to leave for six months to join the California National Guard, which turned out fine, because that was the time Pike met Butala. The trio of Pike, Engemann and Butala were then known as “The Lettermen” when they signed in with Capitol Records in 1961, producing their first hit single “The Way You Look Tonight,” followed by another
song, “When I Fall In Love.” By 1965, another hit song they recorded was “ Theme From A Summer Place.” And, further on around 1967, Bob Engemann resigned but was replaced by Jim Pike’s brother, Gary Pike. The Lettermen’s hit songs continued during the same year with hit songs such as: “”Goin’ Out Of My Head,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” and the following year, 1968, another hit song came out with “”Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” and “Hurt So Bad.” By 1969, they also recorded two other hit songs: “Sugar, Sugar,” and “Love,” which was a single solo sang by Jim Pike, likewise sang by John Lennon. In 1976, Jim Pike left the group due to vocal problems and sold the “Letttermen” name to Butala. Over the years, the group has had various line-ups, replacing members who left for various reasons with new people always forming a trio. However, it was Tony Butala who stayed on,determined with the philosophy that See LIGHTHOUSE, page 13

Why bankruptcy may not be as bad as you think Sleepless nights. Stressed out. Worried about the future. Always broke. This is what most people are going through when they are considering bankruptcy in order to get out of debt. The word “bankruptcy often produces negative feelings because some people equate it with failure. But nothing can be further from the truth. Bankruptcy is not about failing; it’s about starting again and putting the past behind you. A lot of creditors will lie to you when you’re in debt and tell you that bankruptcy is the ‘worst mistake’ you can ever make because your credit will be ‘ruined forever’ and that you will never be able to buy a car or house again. Wrong again. The truth is that bankruptcy is a fact of life. At one time or another, everyone experiences financial difficulties. When you’re in a situation where you have done everything you can to pay your creditors but nothing has worked, bankruptcy may be your only option so you can start a new life. And this is exactly what Congress in-
tended when they passed bankruptcy laws. So with bankruptcy, you get another chance. You wipe the slate clean and move on with your life, free from the burdens of debt. Can you just imagine what would happen if we had no bankruptcy laws that can help people get out of debt when they can no longer help themselves? Filing for bankruptcy means filing a petition for relief from the bankruptcy court. The court reviews your application and determines whether on not you are entitled to the relief you are seeking. It is not for dishonest people who are trying to cheat the system. Contrary to what others think, most people who file for bankruptcy are honest, hard-working people who have gotten themselves in a big financial mess. In some cases

it is caused by factors beyond their control. In other cases, it is a result of making bad financial decisions. But who hasn’t made a bad decision in their life at least once. Life is not perfect. Neither are you. Filing bankruptcy can help you regain your footing if you have lost control of your finances. If you are living your life without a financial plan for the future, you will never achieve financial security. So you can say that bankruptcy is a tool that allows you to reorganize your finances so you can plan a better future for yourself and your family. It is neither good nor bad in and of itself. You can use a tool for the wrong or right reasons. Using it for the wrong reasons is NOT the intent of our bankruptcy laws. Is it for you? Maybe yes; maybe
no. It is not for everyone. But when appropriate for your situation, it could be the best thing that ever happened to you and could be a big turning point in your life if you are drowning in debt. Refinancing again in three months, does it make sense? My advise has always been towards homeowners refinancing without paying loan fees at all. This is why most home borrowers are refinancing and buying home mortgages without paying any fees. Rates just took a huge nose dive to around 3.75% no points for purchase loans. Mostly everyone can get a possible 3.875% rate on refinancing without any fees. But if you had just paid fees to refi, you can still do it but you might have thrown good money away on that cost of the recent refi. But if you can reduce by even .25-.375% without having to pay fees. Please consider this opportunity to lower your payments. This window of opportunity might not stay forever. Refinance your Mortgage Without
Extending the Term? Obviously, the simplest way to refinance without extending the term is to select a new mortgage with a shorter term. How do you refinance your 30 year loan after paying for a few years to another 30 years loan without extending the terms is the questions. \ This is what banks don’t really want you to know if order for you to keep paying your mortgage sometimes never really paying it off. the best method is to refinance at the same term or a shorted term, but increase the payment by the amount required to amortize over the period you wish. Let me explain: “I want to refinance my 4.25% 30-year mortgage, taken out in 2010, without starting the 30-year amortization period all over again. I read recently that the best way to do this is to borrow an amount equal to the original balance, then immediately prepay an amount equal to the difference between the original balance and the current balance. Do you endorse this? No, there are better ways to accomplish your objective. Assume you took out a $250,000 fixed-rate mortgage in 2010 for 30 years at 4.25%. Your monthly mortgage payment was $1229.85. If you made no extra payments, your balance 5 years later would be $227,019.24. You now have an opportunity to refinance at 3.875% on a new 30-year loan with zero cost, but you want to pay off in 25 years, as you would have if you hadn’t refinanced. There are 2 ways to do this. Shorten the Term The simplest way is to make the term on the new loan 25 years instead of 30. Then your new payment will be $1187.79, which would still be below your current payment. The rate on 25-year loans is usually the same as that on the 30, but 20-year terms carry lower rates.. Increase the Payment A much better alternative is to refinance the current balance for 30 years, but increase the payment by the exact amount you were previously paying $ 1229.85, instead of paying $1187.79 which will take you for another 25 year full interest payment. The beauty of this approach is that it is exact. If you are able to continue the $ 1229.85 payment, that means
you are actually reducing your principal balance from day 1 by $ 157.00 and that is all applied towards your principal reduction therefore will translate to your term reduction.. Now your savings, if this is applied you would have saved additional 1years and 4 months of interest payments totaling $ 37,589.02 . If you would have stood still now and do nothing you wont enjoy the savings, even if you sell or refinance again, your balance would have been much lower due to your principal reduction options. This option is a zero cost loan where you don’t have to pay lender fees, escrow fees or title fees. My best advise is to be able to refinance without any out of pocket loan fees and no closing cost added to your loan balance. If you are refinancing again, remind your lender that you don’t want to pay closing cost and also you want a no points no fees loan. Don’t get fooled by just looking at the rates being offered, remember to look at the overall picture. A “No Cost loan might be worth while for you to do without having to pay cost to line up pockets of your lenders. Paying closing cost will take years to break even on the payment adjustments, if you happen to refinance or sell within less than the break even period, you would have lost that money. Please call me if you have any questions pertaining your existing mortgage or new mortgage, there are a lot of refinancing options even for FHA Streamline where they might actually not require an appraisal done on the property. Medicare: Don’t do it alone, seek help Oh, I miss those FilAm Washington lobbyists! They used to keep my Medicare on a high profile in the media. Their Medicare Portability crusade in the U.S Congress just fizzled out. Currently, I am happy to be joined by other columnists who write the same old things on Medicare. This may be good for the new readers, but what about those who continuously search for information to keep them abreast of what is going on Medicare? Change is something permanent. The disruptions which Obamacare wrought to the healthcare landscape brought profound changes to an old entitlement program called Medicare. Do you know that you are entitled to a free preventative medical check up every year? Who takes care of your dental needs? Do you know that you are entitled to medical emergency coverage worldwide if you are enrolled on a Medicare Advantage plan? Will a Medicare Supplement plan be a better alternative for you? Do you have issues with your prescription costs? Are you not earning enough that you will appreciate help paying for your Part B premium? Do you need a good doctor? Every day, 10,000 baby boomers age-in to Medicare (i.e., turn 65). Will they know how to use their Medicare? Every successful person needed help at one time or another. Even successful entrepreneurs
would not submit their tax return without consulting a competent certified public accountant. The most successful athletes surround themselves with great trainers and nutritionists. Will you turn 65 soon? Are you still employed and your company provides you an employer-sponsored plan? Should you enroll on Part B? Have you heard of Medicare Supplement plan and how it differs from a Medicare Advantage plan? How does Part D work? You may have a lot of other questions on your Medicare. Get competent help. What immigration benefits are available to same sex marriages post DOMA? On June 26, 2013, the US Supreme Court struck down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional in the landmark case US. V. Windsor. The BIA shortly thereafter issued a decision in Matter of Zeleniak holding that DOMA is no longer an impediment in recognizing same-sex couples under the immigration and Nationality Act. Matter of Zeleniak, 26 I&N Dec. 158 (BIA 2013). This means a same-sex marriages are now valid for immigration purposes as long as the marriage is recognized in the “place of celebration. This means a same- sex marriage is valid for immigration purposes even if the couple intends ultimately to reside in one of the 37 states that do not recognize same-sex marriages as long as it was valid in the place of celebration. The same-sex marriage is valid even if the applicant is applying in a country in which same-sex marriage is illegal. In the area of immigrant visas, a same sex US Citizen spouse or legal permanent resident spouse may now petition for an immigrant visa for their spouse as long as the marriage was valid in the place of celebration. Validity of the marriage is not based on the place of domicile. Stepchildren acquired through the same sex marriage can also qualify
under the same requirements as stepchildren acquired through opposite sex marriages. Same sex spouses and qualified children or step children can also qualify as dependents of employment-based categories and family-preference categories as derivatives. Same-sex partners off US citizens may also apply for K-1 fiancĂŠ non-immigrant visa the same way opposite sex partners may petition for a fiancĂŠ visa. The same sex US Citizen spouse may then file an immigrant petition and adjustment of status after the fiancĂŠ enters the US and marries the US citizen spouse. Widows and widowers of same-sex spouses can also qualify for immigration benefits under INA 204(l). Generally, this is done by filing a self-petition within two years of the death of the US citizen same sex spouse. In the area of non-immigrant visas, same-sex spouses and their children are now eligible for non-immigrant visa as a derivative. Same

According to Butala, “the current combination of The Lettermen trio which includes Donovan Tea (thirty years), and Bobby Poynton (eight years) is the best sounding combination of pop music voices and the best-sounding group since the original trio. During the intermission, the trio went down the stage and they graciously took photos with the audience as they sang the song “Up, Up and Away. For us Pinoys in the audience, the highlight of their show was when they sang “Dahil Sa Iyo, after the intermission. We were quite impressed by their “Tagalog enunciation and pronunciation, which apparently they have developed over the years of performing in the Philippines. At the end of their show, the trio even said: “Salamat, and “Mabuhay! “The Lettermen trio was indeed a captivating show, filled with memories and nostalgia. OPINION
Boxing great Pacquiao on political crusade By Karl Malakunas
General Santos, Philippines | AFP | Wednesday 2/24/2016 – Manny Pacquiao still trains with the joy that has been a trademark of his spectacular boxing career, but outside of the ring he speaks in ominous, Biblical tones about his political crusade against wickedness. The 37-year-old, who famously hauled himself out of poverty in the Philippines to become one of the world’s greatest and wealthiest boxers, is nearing retirement. After a recent training session in his impoverished southern hometown of General Santos, Pacquiao told AFP he was looking forward to hanging up his gloves after fighting Timothy Bradley in April, and pursuing a political career. Pacquiao, already a congressman, is running for a Senate seat in May elections – with an eye on an eventual presidential run – and his star power in a nation famed for its celebrity-obsessed politics is likely to see him win. But the diminutive boxer, loved for so long in sporting circles for his friendly demeanour and reluctance to trash talk opponents, offered no spirit of compromise to his political foes. He couched his political ambitions with an intense religious fervour borne out of a late-career switch from a playboy-lapsed Catholic to a devout evangelical Christian. “My goal is to serve the people honestly and to expose the wickedness and detestable things in God’s eye that most of the politicians do,” Pacquiao said when asked about his political ambitions. Pacquiao’s newfound religious fury ignited a global controversy last week when he said homosexuals were worse than animals. “It’s common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female,” Pacquiao told Filipino television station TV5. “If men mate with men and women mate with women, they are worse than animals.” ‘Detestable’ Even more inflammatory comments were then posted on his Instagram account, but quickly deleted as his advisers tried to limit the battering to his international reputation. “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable,” the post read, quoting a Bible passage from Leviticus. “They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” In the United States – where Pacquiao has fought most of his bouts, earned the bulk of his riches and long been a fan favourite – the response to Pacquiao’s comments was a mixture of shock and horror. Nike, Pacquiao’s major global sponsor, cancelled its endorsement deal with him, describing his comments as “abhorrent”. Asked by AFP to discuss his views on homosexuality and the international outrage, Pacquiao was unrepentant. “What I did wrong was just comparing the people to animals, but you know what I am telling is the truth,” he said. “I mean I am just telling what the Bible says. We believe God and then we should honor the word of God.”

On Marcos, Cory and Noynoy Thirty years after the EDSA Revolution, the Philippines has gone from bad to worse. Most people will say that the Edsa Revolution did not change the lives of millions of Filipinos for the better. But not the Aquinos, Cojuangcos, Oretas and their cronies. These people made a fortune by cornering all lucrative government contracts and running the “billion peso-jueteng” syndicate in the country during the sixyear presidential term of Cory Aquino. Since the ouster of former President Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, corruption in government has become more pervasive, particularly in Congress. The pockets of lawmakers are bulging with P1000 bills, courtesy of President Aquino and Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, through the DAP and PDAF scheme. There is widespread poverty in the country, sale and distribution of illegal drugs remain unabated and the unemployment rate keeps soaring, prompting more Filipinos to seek employment overseas. Even members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been involved in either holdups, gun-for-hire killings and carnappings, to augment their meager earnings or support their vices in life. The only thing visible that has changed after the Edsa Revolution is the transformation of Hacienda Luisita from being an outmoded sugar mills plantation to one of the best and modern sugar mills plantation in Asia. Of course, Hacienda Luisita is owned by the family of the late former President Cory Aquino, mother of current President Aquino, who was installed as Philippine President after Marcos was ousted through a bloodless military coup in 1986. Even the roads leading to Hacienda Luisita in the town (or is it now a city) of San Miguel is much better and well maintained than that of the whole stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Manila to Pasay city. *** Marcos was reported to have made so much money during his 20-year reign as Philippine president. However, all those who succeeded him, without question, also stole from the government, maybe even more for what he did and in less than six years. Marcos was also accused for being responsible for the murders of student activists, farmers and his political foes who have disappeared during martial law. Cory Aquino, on the other hand, was never blamed nor chastised for the cold blooded slaying of farmers on the historic Mendiola bridge in 1987. The farmers were on their way to Malacañang to press their demand for a genuine land reform when fired upon by po-
lice and Army troopers. To this day, not even one police or Army troopers who took part in the shooting were charged or prosecuted. Same thing with President Cory’s son, “Noynoy.” In November 16, 2004, twelve farmers and two children were killed by police and Army troopers sent by the government to disperse striking workers blocking the gates of Hacienda Luisita. President Noynoy, who was then an unknown and underachieving lawmaker, was reportedly at the scene during the massacre. To this day too, no one was charged or prosecuted for the slaying of the farmers and two young children. *** If Marcos was branded as a dictator, “Noynoy” will always be remembered in history as the most incompetent president the Philippines ever had. I completely agree for what lawyer Homobono Adaza is saying that both “Cory” and “Noynoy” are “TWA” (talagang walang alam). In a few months, President Noynoy will leave Malacanang Palace without any major accomplishments that has helped improve the lives of millions of downtrodden or marginalized Filipinos. He also failed in his campaign promise in 2010 to significantly human rights in the country. President Noynoy’s name, however, will always crop up every time Filipinos talk about the “Mamasapano Massacre,” super typhoon “Yolanda,” “Luneta Massacre,” PDAF and DAP and the ouster of Chief Justice Corona through congressional bribery. Same thing with his mother. Cory will always be remembered by Filipinos, particularly farmers, for her much heralded land reform program which failed miserably. Although she was able to implement land reform in most of the agricultural lands of her political opponents and suspected cronies of Marcos for the benefit of thousands of farmers, she spared her family’s Hacienda Luisita. Up to this day, farmers are still waiting for the government to finally award them the land titles that they have tilled for so many years. I have doubts that they will be able to get it. Not unless Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wins the presidential election in May.
Duterte twits Roxas: He’s a ‘failed politician’ MANILA, Feb 23 (Mabuhay) – Presidential aspirant Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday slammed his rival, Liberal Party standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, calling him a “failed politician,” while the former’s camp tagged the latter as an accomplice of drug lords and pushers. Duterte ridiculed Roxas, saying he could not curb illegal drugs even if he would given 20 years to do it. “He can never do it. Give him 20 years and won’t still be able to hack it,” said Duterte, whose campaign has been anchored on a promise to rid the country of corruption, drugs and criminality in six months or less. The tough-talking mayor issued the statement after Roxas slammed his anti-illegal drugs campaign in Davao City as mayor. “May droga sa Davao ngayon. Ngayon lang, gusto mo samahan kita e, makakabili tayo ng droga sa Davao e,” Roxas told reporters in an ambush interview after the presidential debate in Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday.
(Drugs are rampant in Davao. Right now, I can accompany you and we can buy drugs there.) But Duterte’s camp brushed off Roxas’ statement. Duterte’s camp said his anti-drugs campaign is anchored on effective intelligence network and diligent police work that make the city a hard market to penetrate for drug operators. Over the weekend, a Lanao del Sur couple was nabbed in Davao City with almost P500,000 worth of shabu. They were arrested at the Task Force Davao checkpoint in Toril, a special unit of the military funded by the city government to curb terrorism and other criminal activities. Peter Laviña, Duterte’s spokesman, said that Roxas, a former Interior secretary, failed to curb the drug menace in the country. “For someone who once headed the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Mar’s knowledge (of) and inaction (to) Davao’s illegal drugs makes him an accomplice and a protector of drug lords and their drug pushers,” Laviña said.

Joey Albert considers her battle with cancer ‘fully won’ Joey Albert is back home “more victorious” than the last time she was here. In an interview, the Canada-based singer said she has survived cancer a third time. Last year, during her Valentine’s Day concert with The Company, Joey kept her health condition under wraps as she wanted people to “come and watch the show not because I’m sick.” “(But) my manager knew, The CompanY knew (about it), and they were just extremely supportive,” she said. “They made everything easy for me. It was a meaningful performance.” Joey was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1995. After a successful operation, the cancer returned in 2003, this time affecting her colon. Despite having it removed through another operation, the cancer recurred last year. Joey said that more than the cancer itself, the real struggle for her was overcoming depression. “Akala nila, ‘Kayang-kaya naman ni Joey ’yan,’ but they don’t really see what’s inside, ’yung ’pag mag-isa ka na lang,” she said. “There are friends – they come once in a while – but in the quiet of your own room, this is when the battle really begins.” But giving up is not in her vocabulary and she remained positive throughout the ordeal. “It’s how you keep your head above the water, it’s how you carry

yourself,” she said. “It’s how you use a lemon and turn into lemon juice.” Did she ever ask God, ‘Why me?’ “No. You will just end up disappointing yourself when you ask why this is happening to you cause you never know why.” Joey has learned that “acceptance” and submission to God’s will work wonders. “You humble yourself. You let God take over because that’s the only way because you can’t do it alone,” she added. If anything, Joey attested the battle has taught her to appreciate life even more. “You find out in the end that there’s so much to be thankful for
Toni Gonzaga isn’t ready to let the cat out of the bag just yet. While it has been reported that the 32-year-old actress-host is pregnant, she declined to confirm the reports when asked about it after she was inducted into the AnakTV Hall of Fame for her career in showbiz on Tuesday. “I think this is not the right moment and the right place to talk about it. Siguro may tamang panahon,” said Gonzaga. Last February 11, an entertainment website, citing a source close to the couple, claimed that Gonzaga and director Paul Soriano are expecting their first child. However, in an interview last July, Gonzaga was quoted in saying that she will first finish the upcoming series “Written in Our Stars” before she and husband will consider having a baby. Gonzaga and Soriano tied the than not. I’m thankful I don’t have a colostomy back, I’m thankful I’m even still alive, I’m thankful that I know who my friends are,” she said. Best used cars now available in the market for less By Jon Linkov Consumer Reports
Not everyone enjoys poring over used-car classified ads to find that hidden gem. Even our experts find the hunt through bad cars to be the worst part of the buying experience. An easier solution: Simply determine your budget and choose a vehicle from our lists of the best used cars. We dug through years of test data and hundreds of thousands of survey responses, and cross-referenced those metrics with the availability of electronic stability control, a lifesaving safety feature. The best of the best used car models can be accessed at consumerreports.org.. Each model performed well in our road tests when it was new and had above-average reliabili-
ty for the model years shown. In addition, each vehicle offered ESC as a standard or optional feature. We also included a list of used cars you should avoid considering because they proved to be particularly troublesome and unreliable. Of course, even for used cars we recommend, there can be stinkers – due to a bad day at the factory or a former owner who didn’t care much for car maintenance. Before you buy, make sure to pay for a thorough inspection by a certified mechanic, so there are no surprises down the road. But there is a much better way of buying a used vehicle. And all you
Fil-Am Nash Jimenez: Penske Mercedes-Benz of West Covina’s newest ‘driving force’ By Angel Tahimik
“Everyone is expecting for a better car but they are not willing to put their reservations aside and consider getting a car that may be pricey, but with exceptional benefits that far outweigh its cost.” This was Nash Jimenez’s first statement. He just started as a Fleet Sales Manager of Penske Mercedes-Benz in West Covina. “I just started a week ago. But I have been selling cars half my life. I started in 1993 but it still feels like yesterday. Mercedez-Benz is a different breed altogether since it is a luxury car but that it is worth the price. Unfortunately, everybody has misconceptions about owning a luxury car. And that is where I come in,” says Jimenez. As a car enthusiast, Jimenez considers his job at Penske Mercedez-Benz as a challenge. He says dealing with family cars has been a fruitful experience for his clients as his customer service never waned, but his transition to a luxury line (of cars) would be like proving to himself that he can still arrange great deals regardless of the type of car. According to Jimenez, he wants to offer the same level of expertise and customer service in making great deals for his clients to get them – this time – a luxury car. He said, “It’s like giving back to my customers by changing their impression about luxury cars. You will be paying almost the same for a top-of-the-line car of another make, but getting the most advanced technology. I want my loyal clients to experience that. They deserve to know the truth about owning a luxury car.”
Nash Jimenez, Fleet Manager of Penske Mercedes-Benz of West Covina.
It was an eye-opener for this author as I get a crash course on luxury cars from an empathetic car expert who’s been highly recognized in car sales and dealership. His reputation in arranging the best car deals and converting a “car window-shopper” into a car owner is his legacy. When asked, “what makes him good a salesman”, he said: “Selling is easy. It is serving your customers that makes a lasting impression. I take it upon me to educate them and make their buying experience a memorable one.” Buying a car is one of the major decisions one will make in his lifetime. If he’s lucky, he will meet someone who is willing to break misconceptions to serve his customers. Someone like Nash Jimenez. Ask yourself, isn’t it about time you get yourself a Mercedes-Benz? Let Nash help you. Nash Jimenez, Fleet Manager of Penske Mercedes-Benz of West Covina 2010 E Garvey Ave S, West Covina, CA 91791, can be reached at (909) 225-9983.

Poll finds locals back LA 2024 Olympic bid Los Angeles, UNITED STATES | AFP | Wednesday 2/24/2016 – A telephone poll finding 88 percent of Angelenos support Los Angeles hosting the 2024 Olympics shows the Games are “in LA’s DNA,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday. The poll, conducted in January and February by the Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University, used a demographically representative sample of 2,425 responders and had a margin of error of plus-or-minus three percent. Of those who said they supported a 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles, 56 percent were “strongly supportive,” while 32 percent were “somewhat supportive.” Among those opposed, traffic congestion and cost were cited as reasons. Los Angeles is chasing a third Olympics after successfully hosting the Games in 1932 and 1984. No US city has hosted the Olympics since the Atlanta Games in 1996. Last week, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Budapest filed their formal candidacy papers with the International Olympic Committee, which will vote on the 2024 host city on September 13, 2017 in Lima.
Bonta authors plan to end child poverty Bill to identify, prevent, and heal childhood trauma receives strong support from CDF (Sacramento, CA) – At the State Capitol, the Children’s Defense Fund of California (CDF) released its 2016 plan to end child poverty, ensure educational equity, provide access to health care, and transform justice systems for youth. Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) authored a key part of the plan with his AB 1644 which helps schools identify, prevent, and heal the impacts of violence and trauma on children and youth. The bill is sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General, Children Now, and Time for Kids. “AB 1644 will help combat one of the greatest public health crises of our time: adverse childhood experiences and trauma,” explained Bonta. “Childhood exposure to abuse, neglect, and other traumatic experiences has lifelong health impacts. Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACES, expose children to toxic stress, keeping them in a constant state of fight-or-flight, taking years off their lives and damaging their health. The earlier we address the impacts of ACES on children, the more likely they are to succeed in school and in to adulthood. “To help children exposed to abuse, neglect, and other traumatic experiences, including gun violence, we need to build systems instead of silos. We can do this through a more complete integration of educational, criminal justice, healthcare, mental health, and public health services as well as private sector solutions.”

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients narrate their stories Text and Photos by Jun Camacho
In 2012, President Barack Obama created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a policy that protects eligible undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States by their parents when they were children. DACA provides employment authorization (work permit) and protection from deportation for a renewable two-year period. As of March 2014, a total of 553,197 DACA applications have been approved. It was on November 20, 2014, when President Obama announced executive actions that would expand the existing DACA program and create a new program to allow parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents to remain in the U.S. and work without fear of deportation. The executive actions were challenged in the courts by several states. On February 16, 2015, a federal judge in Texas blocked these two programs (expanded DACA and DAPA – Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents). The injunction meant that the two programs could not be implemented. On November 9, 2015, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans reaffirmed the decision. The 2-1 ruling meant that President Obama’s expanded DACA and DAPA programs could not be implemented. The Obama Administration asked the Supreme Court to take the case. On January 19, 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of United States v. Texas. This means that they will take the case, and a final decision could be made in June 2016. President Obama’s new enforcement policy as announced in November 2014, is still in effect. The

court’s actions do not affect how the government enforces immigration policy or if the government should or shouldn’t deport certain immigrants. NAM Media Roundtable A Roundtable was organized by NAM Media last Feb. 17, 2016 in Anaheim, CA. It was attended by members of local minority broadcast and print media. There was a panel of speakers, three were DACA recipients and Law office Assistance lawyer. Each of them shared their stories, how they achieved independence and being a contributing member of the community. Ms. Patricia Keggley introduced the speakers one by one. DACA Recipients Avila Medrano was brought to America when she was still young, She remembers crossing the border with her older brother. She worked under a different name just to provide for her sick mother because they had no insurance. Teary-eyed, she narrated that she was sexually harrassed at the workplace, but she couldn’t quit because she needed the money. She heard of DACA and applied. She is currently working legally and was able to get free medical treatment thru DACA.
David Lee became homeless at the tender age of 18, when his parents suddenly divorced. He had no idea that he was undocumented which made things difficult. He used to living in the streets at age 18, mingling with drug addicts, prostitutes and criminals. “My only fear then was getting used to it. A Korean guy helped me and was introduced to a non-profit group that helps teens like me. He too applied for DACA and is now working legally and driving his own car after securing a driver’s license thru DACA. But for Francis Perea, life was easier because his parents provided all that was needed. I remember my parents working odd jobs, countless
hours just to provide for our needs. Until they got deported. He was saved from deportation because of DACA. He graduated from Fullerton College and still pursues further studies while working legally. He awaits the Supreme Court’s decision regarding DAPA (Deferred Action for Parental Accountability) and hoping one day he will be reunited with his family. “There is a lot of organization out there who will help teens like us. Seek help and don’t be afraid. Use social media, search for a group in your area. Empower yourself because no one will help you but yourself. And for those of you still hiding in the dark, learn from our stories, Perea said.

FOOD & DINING
Mikuni Seafood Buffet: For the Best buffet and dining experience in Torrance
Mikuni Seafood Buffet opened its doors last August 8, right in the busy streets of Torrance and Hawthorne. The restaurant is known for its amazing fusion of Japanese, Chinese, Western and Mongolian seafood dishes. It has a wide array of seafood items to choose from, including shrimp, crab legs, mussels, fish, oysters, crawfish and more, which come in fresh from the sea. For meat lovers, Mikuni also serves pork, beef and chicken as well. “No MSG” is what Restaurant Manager Christopher Chan mentioned in our little interview right before he asked me to try their food. I was not disappointed. Their food is delicious. Not like the regular buffet restaurants that we’re familiar with, but are no longer exciting. It’s different though at Best Buffet. And the experience is always pleasant that coming back will always be a joy. The restaurant boasts of a large
parking lot and you can surely park anytime you come to dine. Customers can also have their own private section for parties 50 to 250 people. The restaurant also offers a special rate for special events. Please call for
reservations and booking of your event. Mikuni Seafood Buffet Located at 22901 Hawthorne Blvd. Torrance CA 90505. They can be reached at 310791-5550.

FAMILY FEATURES
F
inding the right daily nutritional balance is no easy feat. Managing sugar, carbohydrate, fat and red meat intake takes serious effort and planning, but transforming your favorite recipes into more nutritious family meals may be easier than you realize. Adopting the blenditarian lifestyle is a simple solution to healthier eating. It involves, simply, blending mushrooms into meat to make every day dishes more healthful and delicious. Adding chopped mushrooms to ground beef at a ratio of at least 25 percent mushrooms can enhance the taste of dishes, deliver an extra serving of vegetables and beneficial nutrients, and trim total calories and fat intake. Any mushroom variety will work. Creminis and portabellas lend rich, earthy flavors to any meal, while white button mushrooms offer a more delicate taste. For the more adventurous eaters, maitake and shiitake varieties bring a bold woodsy taste and meaty texture to the plate. The key to blending is developing the perfect mushroom consistency. For example, if using ground meat for tacos or burgers, chop mushrooms to mimic the familiar crumbled texture, using a knife and cutting board, food processor or vegetable chopper. For stews, halve or quarter mushrooms, or slice them to match strips of meat in fajitas or stir-fry. Practice your blending technique with these recipes and find more deliciously blended dishes to share with your family at MushroomInfo.com.

Toyota tops the IIHS 2016 ‘Top Safety Pick+’ Awards TORRANCE, Calif. – Toyota once again led the industry on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) annual list of safety awards. Nine Toyota, Lexus and Scion models received the IIHS’ highest award for 2016, the TOP SAFETY PICK+, the most of any manufacturer. “At Toyota, we continue to focus on the safety and peace of mind of our customers,” said Dino Triantafyllos, Toyota’s North American Chief Quality Officer. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized our commitment to helping protect drivers and passengers.” According to IIHS, automakers were required to meet tougher criteria to be considered for the 2016 awards. For this year’s TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, the IIHS recognized the addition of Toyota’s pre-collision system to the Avalon and the RAV4, rating both models superior for front crash prevention. The Scion iA, which received an advanced rating for front crash prevention, was also acknowledged as the only low-priced
car sold with a standard pre-collision system. All award winners were required to achieve good ratings in five crashworthiness tests and have an available front crash prevention system. TOP SAFETY PICK+ award winners must also have a superior- or advanced-rated front crash prevention system with automatic braking capabilities The full list of 2016 Toyota, Lexus and Scion TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners are: Toyota Prius v, Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, Toyota RAV4, Lexus CT 200h, Lexus ES, Lexus RC, Lexus NX, and Scion iA. Last year, 2015, marked record production for Toyota with 2,035,028 vehicles and 1,933,702 engines produced in North America. Key drivers for increased production include low fuel prices, a healthier economy and strong customer demand for Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and Tacoma.
