MANILA, Nov 9 (Mabuhay) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday defended himself from criticisms regarding his remarks about Vice President Leni Robredo’s knees which many viewed as improper. The Vice President herself decried the incident, calling the President’s comments about her as “inappropriate” and “tasteless.”

But Duterte said he should not be faulted for ogling at Robredo’s knees as he again blamed the media for “making an issue” about the incident.

“It’s appropriate. As a matter of fact it is good,” Duterte said after delivering his departure speech at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 in Pasay City.

Floyd Mayweather Jr obviously wanted a dramatic entrance to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship fight (a title that he vacated when he retired) between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas.

PNR’s ‘Bicol Express’ may resume operations Nov. 24

MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – After almost two years of literally ‘off track,’ the Philippine National Railways (PNR) is set to resume the operations of the Manila-Naga railway line as part of the Duterte administration’s efforts to provide another means of transportation for commuters.

The PNR management will conduct an ocular inspection on November 18 to determine if it will be feasible to resume operations.

“If we find it safe for the conduct of regular trips, we will resume its operations on Nov. 24,” DOTr public information officer Goddess Hope Libiran said in a text message to the Philippines News Agency.

PNR officials have earlier said that ongoing station development projects such as lengthening of platforms and provision of additional waiting areas are being conducted to ensure convenience of passengers.

The PNR has been working for

some years on restoring the Manila-Naga railway line otherwise known as the Bicol Express. As of September 2013, operations to the Bicol Region have been suspended because of typhoon damages to bridges.

The railway management hoped to reopen the Bicol Express Service by about September 2014. However, it was announced that the Bicol Express’ resumption of services would be further delayed until October and November 2014 due to the damages

brought by Typhoon Rammasun, known in the Philippines as Bagyong Glenda.

The Bicol Express provides commuters an alternative mode of transportation that is very competitive in price and comfort with provincial buses. PNR currently operates the Metro South Commuter (MSC) line that runs daily from Tutuban to Sta. Rosa in Laguna, as well as the Bicol Commuter that caters to passengers between Naga and Sipocot.

Shoe manufacturer putting up $10-million Subic plant

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, Nov. 9 (PNA) – The construction of a USD10-million manufacturing facility that would produce branded shoes for export is now in progress in this free port.

Datian Subic Shoes, Inc. is building its own plant in a 42,800-square meter area at Phase II of the Subic Bay Gateway Park here.

The firm will produce branded vulcanized shoes for export and is expected to generate additional jobs for communities around the Freeport.

The company has committed to initially employ about 400 workers.

Its full operations which is expected after 3 to 5 years of steady growth will generate about 2,500 employees.

Datian Subic president Vincent Chen said that like its parent company, D&T Shoes, the Subic company will be producing shoes under global brands such as Keds, Converse, Sperry, and Vans for the American market, as well as Hugo Boss and Dr. Martens for the European market. MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – The city government of Manila will not allow the operation of the traditional night market along Recto Ave. from Abad Santos to Juan Luna streets this December to reduce the expected traffic congestion during the Christmas rush.

Instead, a market limited to vegetable and wet goods vendors will be put up along Recto Ave. between Juan Luna and Asuncion streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly.

“As much as we want to help the vendors earn extra income this Christmas, we cannot allow another big night market in Divisoria to cause more traffic and chaos,” Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said Wednesday.

Since June, the city government has intensified road and sidewalk clearing operations, driving away more than 3,500 illegal vendors and removing numerous obstructions and illegal structures, in an effort to ease traffic congestion in Manila’s thoroughfares.

PHL Sports Commission allots PHP50-M for National Youth Games

MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has allocated PHP50 million for the staging of this year’s National Batang Pinoy Games in Davao del Norte. PSC Commissioner Celia Kiram, who is also the tournament’s project director, said 11,300 athletes from 267 local government units (LGUs) will join the competition scheduled on Nov. 27 to Dec. 2 in Tagum City, the capital of

Davao del Norte.

The National Batang Pinoy Games, which features 600 events in 26 sports, is open to athletes 17 years old and below.

Kiram said the National Batang Pinoy Games is aimed at intensifying PSC’s grassroots program for athletes who will compete in the Youth Olympics and other tournaments, such as the Children of Asia in Russia before they are included in the national team.

The PSC will provide a PHP3,000 allowance to all participants in the National Batang Pinoy Games. Each LGU can field 75 athletes.

Meanwhile, Philippine Sports Institute national director Marc Velasco announced that a Talent Identification team will attend the National Batang Pinoy Games to closely monitor the athletes and conduct a series of seminars with LGU sports directors and coaches.

My office gets many questions on the consequences of being in a Chapter 13 repayment plan. But first, what is a Chapter 13?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an alternative to Chapter 7, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;simpleâ&#x20AC;? bankruptcy, for debtors who own more than allowed exemptions.

Example: Homestead exemption for a couple under 65, is $100,000. What if you owned your house outright, and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to sell? Anything above $100,000 would be non-exempt, so a workout under Chapter 13 would be an appropriate solution, provided you meet the Chapter 13 Plan Payment criteria.

Under a chapter 13 bankruptcy, a debtor proposes a 3-5 year repayment plan to the creditors offering to pay off all or part of the debts from the debtorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future income. You can use Chapter 13 to prevent a house foreclosure; make up missed car or mortgage payments; pay back taxes; stop interest from accruing on your tax debt.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy is generally used by debtors who want to keep secured assets, such as a home or car, when they have more equity in the secured assets than they can protect with their California bankruptcy exemptions. Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a reorganization whereas Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a liquidation.

A chapter 13 bankruptcy allows them to make up their overdue payments over time and to reinstate the original agreement. Where a debtor has valuable nonexempt property and wants to keep it, a chapter 13 may be a better option. However, for the vast majority of individuals who simply want to eliminate their heavy debt burden without paying any of it back, Chapter 7 provides the most attractive choice.

If you can stick to the terms of your repayment agreement, all your remaining dischargeable debt will be released at the end of the plan (typically three to five years). The amount to be repaid is determined by several factors including the debtorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disposable income as is usually determined as part of the California Means Test.

In addition, the total amount paid to creditors under the Chapter 13 plan must also be at least as much as creditors would have received if the debtor filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

That is the liquidation value of assets above allowable exemptions granted in Chapter 7. Most people filing for bankruptcy qualify under Chapter 7 rules. They do not have non-exempt assets, and therefore discharge all unsecured debt.

To file Chapter 13 bankruptcy you must have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;regular source of incomeâ&#x20AC;? and have some disposable income to apply towards your Chapter 13 payment plan.

Questions on Chapter 13 Q: Can I sell a car which secures a debt being paid by my Chapter 13 plan?

A: The short answer is â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;?, but it may not be practical. If you do sell a vehicle which is being paid by the plan,

the debt secured by the vehicle will no longer have to be paid in the plan.

However, payments will still go to the secured creditor unless you modify the plan. You may ask that your plan be modified to remove the car payment, which may allow the plan to be reduce in length or the amount of payments.

Even if you modify your plan, you will still be required to contribute all disposable income to the plan.

It has been our experience that it is usually not practical to sell a vehicle being paid for by the plan. It is rare that a vehicle is worth more than the balance owed on the loan. In order to sell the vehicle, the full balance owed to the creditor must be paidâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not the reduced amount that creditor would get under the plan. The car depreciates faster than you are making payments, so no buyer would be willing to pay off the contract balance.

If you decide that you no longer want the vehicle, it is generally possible to give it back to the creditor even if you cannot find a buyer. In that case the plan can usually be modified to remove payment of the vehicle from the plan and possibly reduce the length of the plan or the amount of the payments.

Q: Can I pay off my Chapter 13 plan early?

A: You can pay ahead a few months on your plan without any problems.

Whether you can pay the entire balance of your plan off depends on how many months you are into your plan, and how much of the debt your plan actually pays: If your plan pays all of the creditors 100% of the debt, you can pay off your plan at any time. However, most chapter 13 plans, based on disposable income, only pay part of the debt, and discharge the balance. So if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re monthly disposable income is $300.00 per month, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you will pay for the duration of the plan (60 months), regardless of whether the total debt is $30,000 or $300,000.

Since the bankruptcy reform act of 2005, Courts have been willing to allow debtors to refinance their properties and use the funds to pay off chapter 13 plans early. However, there are many interpretations of the rules involved, and it also varies from Judge to Judge. Ask your attorney to be sure.

Army: Military honors for late dictator Marcos in Libingan ng mga Bayani burial

MANILA, Nov. 10 (PNA) – The Philippine Army is ready to provide the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos with military honors befitting his rank as former head of state once the date for his interment at the “Libingan Ng Mga Bayani” (LNMB) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig is finalized.

“We will provide former president Marcos military honors fitting (for) a president of our country. He will be given arrival honors by Army brigade-sized honor guard when his remains enter the LNMB,” Col. Benjamin Hao, Army spokesperson, said in an interview with PNA on Thursday.

Duterte unpuzzled by death of Mayor Espinosa MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said he is not puzzled by the death of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa inside his detention cell at the Baybay City Provincial Jail early morning last Saturday. ”Why should I be puzzled,” President Duterte replied when asked by the media if he is puzzled by Espinosa’s death during his pre-departure briefing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). ”You have here a guy, government employee, using his office and money of government, cooking shabu and destroying the lives of so many millions of Filipino. So what is then for me to say about it?,” he added.

President Duterte left on Wednesday for a two-day official visit to Malaysia where he hopes to get greater cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs.

The President said he is waiting for the results of the Philippine National Police (PNP) investigation on the killing of Espinosa, one of the personalities linked to the illicit drug trades. ”I will obey what the police will tell me because we’re working in the government,” the President said.

President Duterte also said he has no plan to find fault with the police who allegedly killed Espinosa while serving arrest warrant for allegedly illegal possession last Saturday. ”I will not go there to find fault with the police. I did not even agree that they should be transferred, at least not now. Because if I will do, no policemen will work already,” he said.

According to reports, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 8 chief Supt. Marvin Marcos was relieved as a result of the death of Espinosa.

On Thursday, the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs will investigate the killing of Espinosa.

Senator Panfilo Lacson said the death of Espinosa might be another case of extrajudicial killing.

The Albuera mayor claimed some 30 lawmakers and police officers are involved in the illegal drugs trade.

“He will also be given a 21-gun salute,” he added.

The former president’s casket will be carried by pall bearers, consisting of active-duty senior sergeants and generals, on his final resting place at the LNMB, the spokesperson added.

As stated in a directive issued last August, the Army was instructed to provide military honors befitting a former president. This includes vigil, bugler, drummer, firing party, military host, pallbearers, escort and transportation, and arrival and departure honors, Hao said.

The burial site of the former president is now being prepared at the 100-square meter plot former presidents are allotted in the LNMB’s 5,000 square meter Presidential Section.

Three Philippine presidents are buried at the heroes’ cemetery – Carlos P. Garcia, Diosdado Macapagal and Elpidio Quirino.

Hao said the Presidential Section still has room for 46 more.

Imee Marcos: We only want a soldier’s burial, no state funeral

MANILA, Nov 9 (Mabuhay) – Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos on Wednesday said that her family only wants a soldier’s burial for the late President Ferdinand Marcos.

“Simpleng paglilibing lang ng isang kawal, isang sundalo ... Hindi naman bonggang-bongga ang inaasahan [ng aming pamilya], Governor Marcos said.

She said that their family is planning a simple burial and not a state funeral. “Kung ano man ‘yung pangkaraniwan na paglilibing sa ating mga sundalo, ganun lang ‘yung aking naisip. Gusto lang niya [ng tatay ko] na makasama ang mga sundalo na nakasama niya noong giyera.”

Also, she said that her family is not considering a public viewing for the remains of the former president. “‘Yung public viewing, bahagi ‘yun ng dapat sana state funeral, ‘yung tinatawag nila na paghihimlay at lamay sa Malacañang, sa Senate, sa kung saan-saan pa. Eh sa amin, parang hindi na kailangan ‘yun, napakatagal na e,” she said.

The Marcos family has not yet set a date for the burial.

“Wala pa tayong date, dahil inaantabayanan pa ‘yung final decision ng Korte Suprema. ‘Yung bali-balita nga na may MR (motion for reconsideration), kung ano ‘yung dapat gawin sa susunod,” Marcos said.

Voting 9-5, the 15 Supreme Court (SC) justices on Tuesday dismissed the consolidated petitions that sought to stop the burial of the late strongman at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Former Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares last Tuesday said they may file a motion for reconsideration in a bid to overturn the SC’s decision favoring the burial of former President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. “Nakakapagtaka at nakakagalit na biglang nag-turn around ang Korte Suprema, pero we will seek a motion for reconsideration. We hope na magbago pa ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema, lalo na’t napakalakas naman ng aming kaso,” Colmenares said.

MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Local businessmen wish that election results in the United States will have no adverse impact on the Philippine economy.

On Wednesday (Manila time), Republican nominee Donald Trump leads the US presidential race, winning 276 electoral votes against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton with 218 electoral votes.

Prior to the result, Makati Business Club (MBC) Executive Director Peter Angelo Perfecto said whoever will be named as the next US president, the country must focus on pursuing mutual interests with the US, particularly in the area of doing business as well as pushing for inclusive growth and sustainable development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The final results of the US elections need not have to have any adverse impact if we can just focus on pursuing mutual interests with the US and its new administration,â&#x20AC;? said Perfecto in a text message. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The impact may be positive or negative depending on how the President (Rodrigo Duterte), hopefully guided by his economic team, will engage the new US administration as well as their new ambassador,â&#x20AC;? he added.

The MBC official said that the new US administration would open opportunity to improve ties between US and the Philippines. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope that this change can be an opportunity for the Philippines and the US to improve and further enhance our relationship as equal partners in a world weary of conflict and with seemingly more and more people feeling left behind,â&#x20AC;? Perfecto said.

From the perspective of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest business organization, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), its President George Barcelon said Trump must push his goal of making America great again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how it will be done.

But if he can, a strong US economy is good for the world,â&#x20AC;? Barcelon pointed out.

He, however, expressed that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement will not be ratified with Trump in the White House.

Commenting on the wild policy pronouncements made by Trump, PCCI Chairman Emeritus Francis Chua said this might be his strategy to get attention during the campaign period. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is not fair to jump to the conclusion that it will be bad for the Philippine economy (with Trump as US President) especially the BPO (business process outsourcing) sector,â&#x20AC;? said Chua. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The words from Donald Trump might be sound bites for campaign purposes. He might realize that it is to the interest of USA to support her allies like the Philippines,â&#x20AC;? he added.

In terms of trade with the US, magnate and PCCI Honorary Chairman Alfredo Yao has seen no unfavorable impact on Philippine merchandise exports to the US with Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s administration, which is viewed as a protectionist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will not be heavily affected when it comes to trade in goods unlike other countries exporting to US with finished products. They will need our exports since we export raw materials like coconut oil, among others,â&#x20AC;? Yao said in a phone interview.

But Yao mentioned that the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s services sector, particularly the BPO, may be affected as Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pronouncements on companies sending jobs abroad were strong.

Philippine Exporters Confederation President Sergio Ortiz-Luis, on the other hand, said that companies have tried relaxing outsourcing work from the US even before the elections and no huge impact were seen in the Philippinesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; BPO industry.

Although Clinton offers more certainty on policies, Ortiz-Luis said Trump, like President Duterte, could be a positive change.

difficult days are ahead. Money will be in short supply. Uncertainty will cause anxiety. The employee may suffer depression. Family relationships may suffer. In short, the ex-employee and his or her family will suffer a lot.

In many instances when an employee is fired, the employee may have been the victim of wrongful termination. But what does wrongful termination mean? In the employment context, wrongful termination means unlawful separation from the job. It means the employee was fired in violation of a certain law, and/or in violation of a fundamental public policy.

There are many laws and fundamental public policies that may be implicated in a wrongful termination of an employee. Some examples are: (1) Safe working conditions, (2) Prompt and accurate payment of wages, (3) Non-discrimination in the workplace, (4) A workplace free from harassment, sexual or otherwise, and many others.

For example, if an employee complained about working over 8 hours in a day without getting paid overtime premium, and is fired because of the complaint, then this is a case of wrongful termination. If a female employee rejects the amorous advances of her supervisor, and then she suffers retaliatory actions, and thereafter fired, then there is wrongful termination. There are too many ways in which an employee can be terminated wrongfully, and I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be able to list all of them here.

Most of the time, a company will hide the true unlawful reason for the termination. An employee who complained that the place of work is too hot may find that the supervisor is now finding that the employee is too slow in doing the job. And after a warning and a suspension, the employee is fired. Or an employee who testified in favor of a co-employee in an EDD hearing finds out that he or she is assigned to a work shift that is really difficult, and is therefore forced to quit. Retaliation occurs when an employer reacts in an way adverse to an employee after the employee acts pursuant to fundamental public policy. When an employer cites lawful reasons for the firing of an employee,

when in fact the real reason is that the employee complained about the working conditions, or that the employee rejected the sexual advances of her supervisor, then there is a case of pretext .

Fortunately, California has plenty of laws that provide remedies to the employee who is subjected to wrongful termination. If it is proven that the employee has been successfully terminated, the employee may recover lost wages, past and future. She will also be entitled to recover for emotional distress and other losses. Sometimes, if malice is proven, the employer will be forced to pay punitive damages.

The amount of damages that an employee may recover from wrongful termination can be significant.

Sometimes, unlawful or wrongful termination is not so easy to see. The non-lawyer may not be familiar with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;fundamental public policiesâ&#x20AC;? that may be involved. Sometimes, there are some deadlines and administrative reporting that have to be completed before an employee can successfully recover for damages in a civil court.

What do you do when you are fired from work? When you are fired from work, consult with an employment lawyer right away. The lawyer will listen to your description of the events leading to the termination. The lawyer will also ask plenty of questions.

And the lawyer can advise you if, in his opinion, your case is a wrongful termination case.

A total of 28 people have already been arrested since the night of November 9, shortly after the protest event was posted on Facebook. It was subsequently deleted but the protest went on.

The protest started peaceful and the demonstrators converged at the steps of the LA City Hall where they burned a pinata of Donald Trump.

However, as the crowd grew bigger, some groups marched to the I-101 freeway and stopped traffic -- to the detriment of motorists who were stuck there for hours. Protestors were estimated to be between 2,000 and 5,000 individuals. The biggest group gathered at N. Spring Street and W. 1st Street in front of Los Angeles City Hall and marched along N. Sprint Street up to W. 6th Street.

As they marched, the protestors shouted: “No Trump! No KKK! No fascism in the USA! Immigrants are welcome here!”

Some protestors played drums while they marched.

The protests were generally peaceful but there were reported incidents of people throwing stones and bottles on the streets, vandalism of police cars, building and other public structures. They were also seen creating bonfires in the middle of the street.

Hiyasmin Saturay, an immigrant rights leader, said the involvement of Filipino Americans in the anti-Donald Trump rallies has its source in the growing apprehensions that the new administration would be harsh towards immigrants, particularly undocumented immigrants.

The activist explained that Trump’s election apparently emboldened the racists among us and validated the hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric that were used during the presidential election campaign.

Francis Ramos, a member of immigrant rights Migrante Southern California said the election of Trump worried him. “Hindi pa kasi talaga permanent yung status ko at ng pamilya ko. At the same time, meron din akong mga kaibigan na LGBT. Parang bumabalik na naman na wala akong status at nag-aalala sa pwedeng kahihitnan mo dito sa America,” Ramos said.

Pia Wurtzbach addresses bashers, defends advocacy work Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach posted a lengthy message on her personal Instagram account, addressing bashers who keep questioning her work as Miss Universe.

In her caption, Wurtzbach said she posted the message because she is tired of people complaining about her seeming lack of focus on her advocacy, especially on raising awareness for HIV/AIDS. “Just to get some things straight. You’re thinking about it, right? Talking about it, correct? Bashing me in the process BUT still getting the message out there.”

Can I get reimbursed for my separate property contribution from all subsequent community properties purchased during marriage?

Question:I contributed money which I saved before the marriage into purchasing a property during the marriage which I acquired with my spouse in joint name. During the marriage we cashed out most of the equity in that house to purchase several properties. The first house we purchased no longer has a lot of equity due to the cash out refi but the subsequent houses we purchased has a lot of equity. My spouse just filed for divorce. Can I seek reimbursement for my separate money that I contributed from all the subsequent houses we purchased during the marriage?

Answer: Family Code Section 2640, subdivision (b), provides, â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the division of the community estate

under this division, unless a party has made a written waiver of the right to reimbursement or has signed a writing that has the effect of a waiver, the party shall be reimbursed for the partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contributions to the acquisition of the property to the extent the party traces the contributions to a separate property source. The amount reimbursed shall be without interest or adjustment for change in monetary values and shall not exceed the net value of the property at the time of the division.â&#x20AC;? The right of reimbursement under family code section 2640 goes further than the initial property purchased during the marriage. In Marriage of Walrath, 17 Cal. 4th 907, (1998), the California Supreme Court held thata spouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reimbursement right upon dissolution for a separate property contribution to a community property acquisition carries through to other community property subsequently acquired with proceeds from original acquisition. Marriage of Walrath, 17 Cal. 4th 907, (1998). In other words, you can seek reimbursement for the separate money you contributed, not only from the initial property purchased jointly during the marriage but also from any subsequent properties you were able to purchase during the marriage by refinancing the initial property provided you can trace the separate funds through the various purchase transactions.

However, your right to reimbursement is limited to the separate money you actually contributed. You do not get to share in any of the of appreciation of the community property houses. Any appreciation above your separate contribution gets credited to the community.Where spouse

contributes separate property to an acquisition of community property, and proceeds from original acquisition are later used to acquire other community property, spouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recovery of proceeds from subsequently acquired property is limited in dissolution proceeding to the amount of spouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original contribution that can be traced to that subsequently acquired asset; community is entitled to any appreciation in that asset above the amount necessary to reimburse spouse for original separate property contribution.Marriage of Walrath, 17 Cal. 4th 907, (1998).

In Walrath, Husband contributed $146,000 of his separate property into a house purchased jointly in California during the marriage while Wife contributed $20,000 of her separate property into that house. During the marriage, the couple refinanced and took out $180,000 which was used to purchase a house in Utah and a house in Nevada. Due to the refi and due to a decrease in real estate prices, the California property only had $1,000 in equity which was clearly insufficient to reimburse husband and wife during their divorce of each oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s separate property contribution.

However, the couple was able to get reimbursement from the subsequently purchased Utah and Nevada property by tracing their respective separate property contributions to the subsequently purchased property.

How you can get your family out of debt – safely and legally As we prepare to wrap up another year, I still see a lot of families who are at the end of their financial rope with no place to turn for help with all types of debt problems. Client with good income seeks Chapter 7 OR Chapter 13 relief for $84k credit cards Client is 58. He is not divorced but separated for 20 years. His income is good. He nets about $7K to $8K a month. He lives by himself and does not even own a car. He goes carpooling with a relative to go to work. His rent is $800 a month. So, he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have too much monthly expenses of necessities for himself, except his food expense is about $1K a month with 3 meals a day; spends at least $30 a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner eating out. His problem is $84K of credit cards. He needs $2,800 a month for minimum credit card payments. He appears to be able to afford making that payment because his disposable income, based on net income of $7K to $8K and actual monthly necessities, excluding credit card debt payment of $2,800 is about $3,000. In other words, every month, he has $3,000 available topay $2,800 of credit card debt, which he has been paying for 15 years. He therefore has paid $504,000 in the last 15 years for minimum monthly credit card payments but still owes the same $84K of credit cards! Well, half a million dollars is a fortune by most standards, unless youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a billionaire who can afford to pay half a million dollars for 3 or 4 Ferraris without flinching. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure that many people would rather have half a million dollars sitting in their retirement account, instead of $84K of credit cards! But $84K of credit cards is what client still has even after paying $504,000 to master card and visa in the last 15 years. If he had wiped out these credit cards in 2001, client probably would have about $1M of equities in his portfolio by now.

But instead of being a millionaire at 58, he has a lot of problems. He lives by himself, has chronic back

pain and has received a lawsuit from one of the credit card companies.

Now, where is his $3K monthly disposable income going into? Because I can see clearly that based on his current income and expense, he is able to float out $3K of disposable income every month. So I ask him if he has relatives who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live with him that he sends money to. His face lighted up as he informs me that he sends about $1K to his son abroad, and $1K each to his brother and sister who also live abroad. His son has just started college abroad and client pays for all his college tuition and living expenses abroad. He sends $2K abroad, which is split 50/50 between his brother and sister who have their own families abroad.

Apparently, both his brother and sister do not make enough to make ends meet so client takes care of both of them. His remits to his son, brother and sister more than $3K a month. This eats up all of his current monthly disposable income.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s either he pays $2,800 a month to credit cards, or sends $3K a month to his son, brother and sister who need the money to survive. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a hard choice to make.

It appears that client was making a lot more than $7K to $8K a month before when he was younger. When he was younger he was making a net of $120K a year, or $10K a month.

But his back has been giving him problems starting last year when he could not work at all because of

chronic back pain. In his line of work, he has to do a lot of physical work, which has taken a toll on his back.

He was on disability for the last 12 months until August he has been off disability. But when I saw him today, he was still contorting and grimacing due to back pain.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had back pain too and believe me, as you get older, it does not take too much physical activity to trigger back pain. I used to be able to do my gardening for 3 or 4 hours straight without any back problem. But nowadays, the most I can garden is one hour straight.

If I do more than one hour of gardening, my back begins to act up and the pain from the pelvis starts to rear its ugly head. So, I have no doubt that since client has gone back to physical work, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really know how long he can continue working with that kind of back pain.

Faced with the foregoing circumstances, what client needs is bankruptcy relief to get rid of $84K of credit cards. But will client qualify for Chapter 7 relief where all of the $84K will just be wiped out without a single payment from client, or is his case really a Chapter 13? Well, this could be a nail biter just like the 2016 presidential elections. I was for Hillary, who, according to all the polls and pundits in the last 12 months was a sure winner, but in the end, she lost. Well, it must be Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will for Trump to be our president.

Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ways are truly mysterious and unfathomable by us mere mortals.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really concerned for all the 11M immigrants who appear now have no path to be legalized under Trump.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wait and see what happens.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pray that our God, the one and only true God, the God of Moses and

Israel, my God as well, will speak to Trump and guide him on the immigration matter. I am praying for a miracle on this matter for Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greater glory.

If we file this as a Chapter 7, there could be objections from the US trustee on the $2K that he sends to his brother and sister since he is not really required by law to make these payments. In other words, Chapter 13 would be a safer bet. Maybe the court will accept a $400 a month plan payment for 60 months. This means he pays $24K out of the $84K credit cards, and the court discharges $64K. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a 30% payment. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too bad. But letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s see, I still have to crunch out the means test to see what is possible and not.

This remains to be seen but certainly he needs bankruptcy relief and will go for it. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want a 25% garnishment of his wages from the lawsuit he just received. Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t blame him, nobody wants to lose 25% of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gross wages to a garnishment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;THIS GOD IS OUR GOD FOR EVER AND EVER; HE WILL BE OUR GUIDE EVEN TO THE END.â&#x20AC;?

How to buy your first home…the easy way Buying a residence can be a hair-raising experience. You will experience a roller coaster of emotions while finding the right place, securing the loan and finally moving in.

For most of us, the first time home purchase is the largest investment we’ve ever considered. The emotions of purchasing something so expensive and personal can often cloud our business judgment.

Surprisingly, most home purchasers do little or no research before they invest their nest egg. Doesn’t it make sense to become completely informed before you buy your first home? This article is designed to help you avoid 10 common and crucial mistakes. The right real estate professional can help you make good sound business decisions based on your personal situation.

INSPECT INSPECT INSPECT Go over the inspection report with a fine tooth comb. Make sure the report was done by a professional organization. For condo purchases go over the CC&R’s, By-laws and Association fees. Don’t take anything for granted.. inspect everything.

Imagine the Property Vacant Your furnishings and decorations will be the ones filling this new residence. Don’t be swayed by beautiful furniture, it leaves with the owner.

Income + Lifestyle = Mortgage Payment Sit down with you professional loan agent and honestly discuss your income and living expenses. Take into account future considerations, children, add-ons, amenities, and fixups. Your dream home is certainly worth a sacrifice but don’t mortgage your entire furniture. Do your budgeting and make sure you are fully aware of the loan program you are

getting into. See yourself 5-7 years into this property and loan.

View Several Homes See at least 7-10 properties. Don’t move too slow but don’t move on the first property you see. With your agent’s help you should be able to view enough properties to get a good overall perspective of the home market. When you find the right property all the legwork will be worth it. Always investigate yourself what is selling in the area and don’t overprice yourself in this market, especially if you are a no money down buyer.

Utilize Your Team By aligning yourself with the right real estate professional you will have an entire team at your disposal. Utilize your lender, title rep and agent.

Each of them should work hand in hand for your benefit. Explore all the options before you sign. Do not allow one organization to dominate the whole transaction, meaning don’t go to an agent whose got the lender, escrow and title company in their back pocket. If this organization has too much interest into a transaction then that might alter their views.

Be a “Columbo” Check out all loan costs and expenses before you sign. Utilities, taxes, insurance, maintenance and home owner dues if applicable. Make sure all utilities (gas, electricity, and water) are on during walk-through so that you can inspect everything in

working order. Ask for lots of questions and be very detail conscious.

Do a Final Walk-Through Visit the property after all previous owner’s furnishings have been moved out to be sure there are no surprises. Be absolutely positive the property was left exactly as you had agreed upon in the contract. Things that could have been spotted in a final walk-through are often unintentionally overlooked.

Plan for Flexibility Closing dates are not written in stone. Allow for contingencies and have a back-up plans. If you or the sellers need a little more to conclude the final arrangements, don’t let these delays upset or frustrate you.

These types of circumstance are not uncommon in a normal real estate transaction.

If It’s Not In Writing, It Doesn’t Exist All promises and discussions should be in writing. Don’t make any assumptions or believe any assurances. Even the best intentions can be misinterpreted. Have your professional agent keep an ongoing log in writing for all discussions and get the seller’s written approval.

Don’t be shy to ask for things in writing, be firm because once the

deal is done. Its twice as hard to go back and make things right.

Timing is Key at this point Warning to first time buyers with minimal money down, be very careful working out your finances. Its advisable to get a straight 30 years fixed rate loan mortgage now. Since fixed rate mortgages are still at its lows. First time buyers who will live in the house long term should buy a house instead of renting as long as they can afford the mortgage payments. Since rental payments are so high, you are better off paying a mortgage with a tax deductible interest write off.

Note: Always keep your option to negotiate open and don’t let anyone decide for you, remember your hard earned money is at stake. Negotiate to where it will benefit you and your family. Duterte renews pledge of zero corruption in gov’t

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov 10 (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte met the Filipino community here in Malaysia Wednesday, Nov. 9, and reiterated his campaign pledge of zero corruption in his administration.

The President run in the last presidential election on a campaign agenda of aggressively fighting corruption, criminality and illegal drugs.

“I promised the people, sabagay ito seryoso na ‘to,” he said in his speech. “Corruption must stop and it will stop during my time.”

He advised overseas Filipino workers here to be assertive especially when dealing with personnel from government agencies. He said OFWs often fall prey to extortionist in the country’s airports when they are going home.

The country has so much concerns and he said he has to put things in order so the country could progress.

One of his major initiatives is talking peace with several rebel groups in the country to attain peace and stability.

A federal system of government must be adopted, he said, to remedy Muslim as well as communist rebellion in the country, which has been ongoing for several decades.

The President also expressed his plans to tackle poverty and give people livelihood especially the poorest of the poor. He said he is looking at boosting small and medium scale entrepreneurs to create livelihood.

The Philippines has to improve so that one day, Filipinos would no longer go abroad to earn a living, he said. At the same time, he thanked the Malaysian people as well as Prime Minister Najib Razak for treating Filipinos in Malaysia well.

Before going to Malaysia, President Duterte had a brief stop in Bangkok Wednesday afternoon to pay his last respects to the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej who died on October 13, 2016.

At the Grand Palace, the President bowed before the Royal Funeral Urn and presented his condolence wreath. The President then signed the Book of Condolence.

The Thai king, who ruled for seven decades, was a symbol national unity and remain an inspiration to the people of Thailand.

He was also highly respected and regarded in the region and beyond for his dedicated efforts to foster goodwill and cooperation among nations. Filipinos remembered him with affection after his State Visit to Manila in 1963.

Lacson: ‘Nothing makes sense’ in Espinosa slay MANILA, Nov 10 (Mabuhay) – Senator Panfilo Lacson on Thursday said “nothing makes sense” in the police’s version that Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa was killed in a shootout while detained inside a provincial jail.

“Why would Mayor Espinosa even attempt to put up a fight while he was trapped inside a prison cell with nowhere to go, not to mention that he has surrendered and was fully cooperating hoping to become a state witness?” Lacson said.

“Nothing makes sense,” the senator stressed.

The Senate public order committee, which Lacson chairs, started its investigation on the

slay of Espinosa Thursday morning.

Also to be investigated is the killing of Datu Saudi Ampatuan Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom in Cotabato last October 28.

Lacson said the killing of Espinosa was “not a simple case of nanlaban or napatay.”

Espinosa and drug suspect Raul Yap were killed in an alleged shootout inside the Baybay City Provincial Jail on November 5.

According to operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the mayor fired at them first.

The CIDG claims the shootout happened when it tried to serve a search warrant on the mayor for possession of drugs and a firearm inside the jail.(MNS)

DILG chief: No whitewash in Espinosa, Yap killings; all probes welcome MANILA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno vowed there would be no whitewash in the probe into the killings of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa and inmate Raul Yap. Sueno has earlier tasked the Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) and National Police Commission (Napolcom) to conduct a parallel probe into the fatal shooting incident.

“Kung ano ang nangyari talaga, the Department will not whitewash. We will have it investigated thoroughly,” he said.

Sueno also said he also welcomed the probe of other agencies, including the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), into the incident.

“We welcome the investigations being conducted by other agencies and bodies because more than anyone else, we want to get to the bottom of this incident so we can carry out the necessary actions,” Sueno said.

“We also welcome National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct the investigation para ipakita talaga sa public na wala kaming tinatago,” he added.

Hero’s burial for Marcos still inconsistent with morality: Robredo MANILA, Nov 8 (Mabuhay) – The planned burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani remains immoral despite being upheld as legal by the Supreme Court, Vice President Leni Robredo said on Tuesday.

Robredo made the statement shortly after the High Tribunal dismissed the consolidated petitions by human rights advocates blocking the burial of the ousted strongman at the heroes’ cemetery.

“It might pass the bar of legal technicality, but can never be consistent with morality and the spirit of the Filipino people power revolution,” Robredo said.

“To bury Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani would keep the wounds of the past unhealed,” she added. Robredo has repeatedly criticized the Marcoses for neither acknowledging nor apologizing for the abuses that happened during Martial Law.

In Tuesday’s statement, she said: “Their family’s refusal to take responsibility for atrocities of the regime is an insult to the Filipino people.”

“Our nation’s healing begins with the acknowledgement of the truth and resolution of the past,” Robredo said.

Robredo won the vice presidency by a slim margin against the late dictator’s son, Ferdinand Jr. or Bongbong.

The former senator filed an electoral protest against her, currently pending before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), composed of magistrates of the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the Vice President admitted that she has heard rumors that the burial would be “packaged” with Bongbong’s eventual victory in the PET case.

She said, however, that she would rather remain optimistic, maintaining her confidence in her victory and the truth.(MNS)

Is Trump good or bad for PHL economy?

Billionaire businessman and Republican nominee Donald Trump made history Tuesday night. He is the first person to get elected as United States President even without prior political or military experience.

The American voters have decided that Trump is the one person who will “make America great again.”

Americans are hopeful that Trump will deliver what he promised in his campaign speeches, including building a wall on the southern border of the United States and “shut down” Muslim immigration to protect America from possible terrorists attacks.

While Americans were ecstatic about Trump’s ascendancy to the “Oval Office,” there is a cloud of uncertainty prevailing in the Philippines.

Filipino economists and businessmen are saying that Trump’s victory in the election has possible dire implications on the Philippine’s economy. Trump’s strong stance against illegal immigration has also delivered a hard blow to the aspirations of undocumented immigrants living in the United States, Filipinos included, to become legal residents through immigration reforms.

Hillary Clinton was the choice of many Filipinos because of her pro-immigrant stance as compared to Trump, who wants to impose stricter immigration laws to prevent terrorists from coming to the US. In one of his campaign speeches, Trump even mentioned Filipinos as potential terrorists. He, however corrected himself days after and apologized for his unsavory remarks to Filipinos.

There are more than 3.5 million Filipino expats living here in the United States, 300,000 of them are still undocumented. It is still unclear whether Trump will carry out his threat to deport all undocumented immigrants, Filipinos included, once he is sworn in as the 45th US president.

Filipinos here in America are sending billions of dollars annually in remittances to their families which helped a lot in making the Philippine economy in a sound position, even during the global economic crisis. In 2014, it was reported that remittances from United States alone amounted to $10.4 billion.

If Trump remains focused in improving America’s economy as well as its unemployment problem, it might indeed have serious effects on the Philippine economy.

At present, the Philippines has a flourishing business process outsourcing (BPO) sector which has continuously provided employment opportunities to hundreds of Filipinos in call centers to global businesses.

Last year, the BPO sector generated close to 1.2 million direct jobs and $22 billion in revenues, according to a report made by Information Technology an d BPO Philippines.

The revenues brought in by the BPO is equivalent to about 10 per cent of the Philippine economy.

The thriving BPO sector has also encouraged hundreds of Filipino workers who might have sought opportunities abroad to stay in the Philippines and work at call centers.

All these thriving businesses will be affected if Trump will carry out his threat to punish American firms that outsource jobs overseas.

It will also have a direct impact on the lives of Filipino workers who have benefitted from the BPO firms.

Throughout the campaign period, Trump promised his supporters to

bring back jobs that left America to ease the country’s unemployment problem. Although Trump cannot legally force American firms to come back here in America, he can make them pay higher taxes once their goods or finished products are shipped back here in the US. American firms doing business in Asia, Philippines included, are not likely to pull out their operations despite Trump’s threat of imposing higher taxes on their goods, though. They will stay because of the cheap labor cost in these Asian countries, China included.

As a matter fact, there are reports that a $10 million shoe manufacturing firm will be constructed on a 42,800-square meter lot at the Subic Bay Gateway Park in Zambales to produce American branded shoes such as Sperry, Converse and Keds.

The construction will start on the second quarter of next year and hopes to generated 400 job openings for Filipinos in its initial stage. Once fully operational, they said the plant will hire 2,500 more Filipino workers.

These branded shoes to be made in the Philippines will only be made available to the American market, meaning that they will all be shipped exclusively here in America.

If Trump is serious to make America “great again,” and regain its global leadership, he should realize

the importance and role of its allies in Asia in dealing with China’s increasing presence in the South and East of China Sea. Trump will need to reach out to American allies in securing lasting peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific Region.

Ever since he started campaigning for the U.S presidency, Trump has never said anything explicit about his foreign policy in Asia, except to accuse China of stealing American jobs and manipulating its currency. Many are predicting that a Trump presidency will be more withdrawn in foreign affairs and will more likely be less pro active in Asia. This is expected because in his campaign speeches, he insulted American allies in Asia, Philippines included, as “freeloaders under the nuclear umbrella provided by the United States.” He said US allies in Asia should pay more for the protection the American forces has provided them for so many years.

President Barack Obama, on the other hand, strongly protested China’s militarization of islands in the South China Sea and conducted freedom of navigation operations in the area, which may change under a Trump administration.

Hopefully, once Trump gets settled in his Oval Office, things will change for the better, not only for America but as well as for the Philippines. Who knows? A Trump presidency might even promote a stronger RP-US relationship.

You, too, can fly in Sarangani

MAASIM, Sarangani (November 10, 2016) - I spent so much of my childhood fancying of being a pixie or being able to try a magic carpet ride.

I have rocketed through a zip line and hopped in a helicopter but they were not even close to flying.

It was until a few days ago, overlooking the breathtaking Sarangani Bay and suspended in straps attached to an inflatable canopy, I was able to fly.

Thirty minutes away from General Santos City lies Safi Ranch Paragliding Fly Site, the largest paragliding arena in the Philippines.

It is located in Sitio Seguil, Barangay Tinoto, Maasim, where it offers about five kilometers of ridge for paragliding soaring and flying.

It was five years ago when paragliding was first introduced in this site by a group of paraglide enthusiasts—the Sarangani Paragliding Club (SPC).

“Sarangani has the longest paragliding window in the country with 300 days a year, from 7am to 1pm for flying makes it the paragliding capital of the country,” said Michelle Solon, provincial and regional tourism council president.

Last October 29-31, 23 international and local pilots and a thousand spectators gathered in the 1st SOX Paragliding Costume Fun Flying and Air Sports Festival in celebration of the National Fun Fly. Paragliding is the art of free flight

and dependent on weather and wind conditions.

More than a thousand feet above sea level, I and my tandem pilot Darvin Villanueva who has long been an SPC member, had a gentle takeoff because of the beautiful weather.

Tandem flight costs P3,500 which includes a video footage. But a promotional discount of P1,000 was given from October 29 to the 6th of November.

Proper attire is needed for flying; comfortable trainers or rubber shoes, pullover and jeans.

After 10 minutes of soaring, we landed safely. The landing area is 300 ft. away which is perfect training ground for beginners.

Nine-year old Rain Oncada, a learner, is being taught of ground handling and kiting skills. Enrollment is open to all ages for P35,000.

On the first day, the skies looked like hosting an air parade with the mass takeoff rehearsal/synchronized flying of pilots.

Rounds of air parade and a costume flying contest was participated in by 17 pilots. Winner Randel Raymundo represented a creative giant Christmas star in which he brought home the top prize of P15,000.

Others resembled an eagle, a grim reaper, a dinosaur and there were some who wore a scuba gear, ski and a giant Deuter bag.

In accuracy competition, winner Carlaa Montero brought home the first prize by doing a perfect takeoff,

airborne and landing stints.

“Paragliding is now one of the rising extreme sports in the country where it brings ecotourism and livelihood to the community,” said tourism regional director Nellie Dillera.

Other paragliding sites are found in Cavite and in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

Way back 2012, Sarangani has been identified as a good flying site for paragliding. Armand Dard, a French national and a visiting paragliding professional instructor, told Sarangani Information Office then that “this is my second time in the Philippines and my first time in Sarangani. Last year I did some paragliding in Carmona, Cavite and also in Boracay but this place which I discovered one month ago is a better flight site.”

“It has comfortable take off and landing sites,” Dard noted. “It also has a big landing site comfortable for beginners and you can fly almost every day.”

Dard conducted paragliding international standard trainings to members of the Sarangani Paragliding Club.

“You ask what is the next big thing in Region 12, we are crossing our fingers—but I believe in a heartbeat, it’s going to be paragliding in Sarangani. It is definitely a #1forfun!” said Solon four years ago.

DOT attaché sees over 2K Taiwanese tourists by year end

PUERTO PRINCESA, Nov. 9 (PNA) – A tourism attaché expects over 200,000 Taiwanese tourist arrivals to the Philippines by yearend as scheduled familiarization tours this month are expected to pique their interest particularly in the country’s well-known beaches.

“We have around 180,000 tourists as of September. Our targets for yearend are between 200,000 to 220,000,” Tourism attaché to Taiwan Hazel Habito Javier said in an interview with the Philippines News Agency.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has yet to release arrivals for September, but most recent data showed that as of August, Taiwanese tourist

arrivals have reached 157,517. Taiwan is currently the country’s sixth top visitor market.

Javier has brought in a 23-member delegation composed of Taiwanese tour operators and media to Puerto Princesa, Palawan for a week-long media of familiarization tour in the province.

The 23-member delegation arrived Puerto Princesa on Tuesday (Nov 8) and attended a business-to-business (B2B) meeting the same day in hopes of convincing them to charter more flights between the Philippines and Taiwan.

“We’re promoting different products, ESL (English as a second language), dive tourism, general leisure but one of the reasons we brought

agents here is to bring in more charter flights,” Javier said.

The Philippines also participated in the recently concluded Taipei International Travel Fair last Nov 4 to 7 in the World Trade Center in Taipei.

Javier expressed hope that the familiarization tour would bring triple or quadruple returns and would eventually create more business opportunities for the Mimaropa Region particularly Palawan and Mindoro.

Mimaropa or Region IV-B is composed of five provinces namely Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.

Puerto Princesa is expected to open an international airport that can accommodate 51 flights a day by the first quarter of 2017.

The Philippine Children’s Charities Inc., (PCCI) recently launched the 2016 Outstanding Filipino Americans USA, alongside the presentation of 2016 Ambassadors of Goodwill.

These Ambassadors of Goodwill, namely: Miss Philippines USA 2016 Nerfitte Wanzo, Jasmine Morada and Danielle Nicole Viray; Miss Teen Philippines USA 2016 Kyrsten Denise Rioveros, Rheanna Ocampo, Angelique Cobilla and YasminSavalan; Mrs. Philippines USA 2016 Dory Baghallian, Leilani King, Judith Catigan, Leenda Balauag and Leticia Jose are to be crowned at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport on December 17, 2016.

The beauties and some of the outstanding Filipino American awardees were presented during a simple ceremony at the residence of Darna Umayam, PCCI Chairperson, in Eagle Rock in the City of Los Angeles.

This year’s top Filipino Americans include medical practitioners, local government officials, members of the academe, journalists, photographers and many other individuals who showed exemplary devotion and achievements in their respective fields.

California, recalled the tear-jerking experiences of PCCI volunteers who conducted medical and feeding missions in Barangay Payatas in Quezon City last year as part of the organizations annual program to reach out to the poor in the Philippines.

Barangay Payatas is a neighborhood nestled in a dump site.

Umayam seconded Abiera’s testimonial and implored those present to appreciate the value of charity works, particularly for fellow Filipinos in the homeland.

“We have to help them because they have no one to turn to. Sometimes, what we routinely spend here to buy a hamburger meal could already save a life back in the Philippines.

This is why we work hard to raise funds every year so we can regularly come to the Philippines and help our kababayans,” Umayam said.Also present during the occasion were Carson Mayor Pro Tempore Elito Santarina, former Walnut Mayor Tony Cartagena, distinguished medical practitioners Dr. Manuel Baculi and his wife, Philippine Department of Tourism-Los Angeles Director Richmond Jimenez and the executive council members of the Philippine Independence Coordinating Council of Southern California.
