Gabriela calls on Duterte to strengthen local economy, end Filipino workers’ exodus By Filane Mikee Cervantes
MANILA, Oct. 26 (PNA) – Women’s partylist group Gabriela on Wednesday expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s thrust to end the exodus of Filipino workers for overseas jobs. In a statement, Gabriela Partylist Rep. Emmi de Jesus also urged the President to strengthen the local economy through a genuine agrarian reform program and create national industries to ultimately put an end to decades of exporting human resources. “Women share the dream of having a local economy that is strong enough to support our labor force, creating an environment where it will not be necessary for women to leave their children and families to eke out a living,” de Jesus said.
President Duterte said before the Filipino community in Japan on Tuesday that he wants this generation to be the last of human resource exports. De Jesus, senior vice chair of the House of Representatives’ committee on overseas workers affairs, has already sought a congressional inquiry, through House Resolution 462, on the unjust death of overseas worker Irma Jotojot to beef up laws for the promotion and protection of the rights and welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “We have long been aware of migrant women’s vulnerability to abuse and we hope that we will soon see an end to the likes of Irma Jotojot and other Filipino migrants who have died under very suspicious circumstances See GABRIELA, page 8
