Working from Home Tax Claims The Australian Tax office recognises that, due to COVID-19, a significant number of employees and business owners started working from home and consequently incurred additional running expenses in relation to their income-producing activities. In response, the ATO introduced a shortcut method allowing individuals to claim 80c per hour worked from home. This is only for the period from 1 March 2020 to 30 September 2020 (2020 and 2021 financial years).
This rate is ‘all-inclusive’, meaning it covers all of your expenses such as phone, internet and electricity. If you use this method, you are unable to claim any other expenses for working from home for the above-mentioned time period. You must keep a record of the number of hours you have worked from home. Examples of suitable records include timesheet entries, your roster, a diary or documents that show the hours you worked from home.
