Vision and Digital Devices

Group Training – Is it for me?

Most of us have been spending more time on digital devices over the last few months. Here are some tips to help you and your child's vision:

The simple answer: of course. It’s for everyone.

• Go outside – spending 1.5 hours per day outdoors (not on screens) has been shown to decrease the risk of developing myopia when younger (short-sightedness).

• M otivation. We hold each other accountable. If you’ve ever hit the snooze button, bailed on a class last minute, or found yourself otherwise waning in self motivation, join a group training facility and make use of the group motivation and collective accountability.

• Limit screen time – spending more than 2 hours/day on screens has been shown to increase the risk of developing myopia. • Take a break – try the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away to a distance of 20 feet for at least 20 seconds. • Good lighting – avoid using digital devices in dim or dark light as it creates eye strain. • Good posture – the optimal distance for any close task is no closer than a forearm’s length from the eyes. Regular vision and eye health checks will enable us to go through these points with you based on your individual needs, and to assess whether your visual system is working as well as it can. Here are a few things you may not know about group training:

• Structure. When you’re working out, having a consistent or well-structured plan in place is a must to see results. If you’ve ever walked into a gym and thought, "Now what?", then group training is for you. Trust that someone more qualified and experienced has spent hours putting a program together that will get you results. • Fun. Exposure to a fun and social environment is why many people prefer group training to a lone gym session. Think of the occasional dance breaks, social chats, group events and laughter! This helps with point one – motivation. If you’re struggling to get back into it after COVID-19 closures or during the colder months, group fitness may just be what you need.
