The Mary MacKillop College Community
Northgate Ward Update
There’s been a lot happening lately. A worldwide virus. Online schooling. Isolation. Closed borders. Cancellations. Through it all, the community of Mary MacKillop College has remained determined not just to survive, but to thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted Mary MacKillop College to adopt a thoroughly MMC (Mary MacKillop Coronavirus) approach. It has seven key pillars – MMCare, MMClasses, MMConnection, MMCollaboration, MMCommunication, MMCo-curriculum and MMCommunity. We’ve had a conversation with every family, adapted teaching to ensure continuity of high-quality learning, provided meals for people within and beyond the college, found new ways to engage and stretch our learners, and supported families hit hard by job loss and hardship. As the pandemic evolves, Mary MacKillop College is thriving on a renewed commitment to education for justice, creating community, seeing opportunity in the everyday, and ensuring the joy of life shines through, even in times of great challenge.
As your local Councillor, I have a very strong focus on the future of our area, how we plan for inevitable changes, and how we ensure that the Brisbane of tomorrow is even better than the Brisbane of today. This year’s budget is framed in the most challenging economic environment in a generation. While the current crisis meant some tough decisions were made, I am pleased to be able to share with you some of the great projects I have been able to secure as part of Council’s 2020-21 Budget. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated essential workers who continue to support Brisbane during these difficult times.

Hows and Melton Rds, Nundah Intersection Upgrade A number of residents have mentioned the challenges at the intersection of Hows and Melton Roads, Nundah. This project has been on my list of priorities for sometime. I have been advocating on behalf of residents and working to achieve the best outcome for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. I am pleased to have secured funding in this budget to install a roundabout at this difficult intersection. The upgrade aims to improve safety and congestion. I will keep residents up to date as the project progresses. COVID-19: Support for Brisbane Businesses In response to COVID-19, Brisbane City Council is taking action to help rebuild Brisbane’s economy under our Economic Recovery Taskforce. The Taskforce will bolster and rebuild Brisbane’s economy in the wake of coronavirus. You can find a list of initiatives on Council’s Business in Brisbane website. Council is working hard to ensure Brisbane is Australia’s most small business-friendly city with more support in the suburbs. Suburban Shopfront Activation is a pilot program that encourages property owners with vacant premises in the suburbs to provide opportunities for temporary use by emerging businesses. We are also putting out a call to emerging businesses that are interested in occupying a temporary space.
Did you know that Council has a dedicated 24/7 Business Hotline? 133 BNE (133 263) is a one-stop-shop for businesses seeking information on Council services. Business Liaison Officers are also available for one-on-one sessions to talk about available resources. It’s more important than ever to show our Brisbane business community that they’re not alone.
