Welcome to fall! A lot can happen in the space of two months and it always just seems like yesterday I was writing out this note for you all, but here I am again, trying not to babble. In August 2015, our amazing founder of Love to Decorate took a step back from Second Life and is now focusing on real life. And though we are all sad about it, it is really good news for him. Mr. Editorial Clarity has some exciting challenges ahead, and knowing Edi, he is going to do an amazing job. Whenever he challenges himself, he always comes out on top and we are all proud of him. If it were not for him, we wouldn’t have LTD. We have a Blogger Spotlight on the talented Cicada. She has created some exclusive images for our magazine that we just know you will enjoy. Our Featured Designer for this issue is none other than Robert Galland, of Galland Homes, where we get some insight into his mind. We also hope you enjoy his story that was written by the talented Mozart Loordes. We always try to do our best to have a better issue than the last, and this issue is no different. We are very proud to announce a new section, by popular demand, that will be making a regular appearance … LTD Family! Earlier this year, we had announced that we were going to release a new magazine called LTD Family. We still plan to one day launch the LTD Family magazine in its own right, but for now it will be a section in every issue and we hope it will inspire you. I am so thankful for the dedicated team that we have at LTD. It never ceases to amaze me to see ideas come to life and to enjoy the beautiful work that results from such dedication. I am in awe of our team and just so grateful I have them here at LTD. New to our team we have the amazing talents of Pokute Burt, Skippy Beresford, and Lemon Panda. All of whom will be working our LTD Family section. We have Designs by Knave back this issue, as well Kylie Sabra’s Art Scene. I could spend all day talking about the amazing things that this issue has to offer but let’s face it… everything about this issue is amazing as always! Robert Galland has been making homes in Second Life® for eight years now. He has seen housing styles come and go, from massive mansions to homely cottages, and yet he’s still inspired to produce those homes of perfection that everyone longs for in real life translated into our virtual world. We met up over a busy weekend (Robert is a lawyer in real life) to discuss the evolution of the virtual housing market and Galland Homes in particular. Not only is he a very pleasant person to chat to but also he is very customer oriented, taking great pains to produce those dream homes that are currently in vogue. Way back in virtual history when land prices weren’t so expensive Robert produced large and luxurious housing, but as time went on his careful marketing revealed a trend towards smaller but no less lavish homes combined with elements of comfort, and that is where his focus is nowadays. Our first point of interest was to discuss the learning curve for designers in Second Life® as that is one of the debates we’ve had recently on the building groups. Robert’s take on it was revealing. “I think that the learning curve for new creators has been steadily increasing for years - since the introduction of sculpted prims. When I started, it was somewhat intuitive to lay down prims and use the Second Life® internal build tools to create builds. It is not as easy anymore. However, with added complexity comes a greater result in the realism and types of products we can make. For my own part, I use Blender heavily and have found that if you commit to learning it, it is not as hard as the wrap it has been given. It is a wonderfully powerful program - and free.” “This may sound silly, but I have never paid out the 600 bucks or so to get Photoshop and I use Paint Shop Pro for my texture work. Finally, I have experimented with Crazybump to assist with creating materials textures and I am learning that within Blender as well.” It was fascinating to hear about an alternative program to Photoshop. Paint Shop Pro can layer and work with transparencies, design print advertising and take all sorts of plugins that would otherwise be associated with Photoshop. To hear about a premier Home & Garden designer who uses the free and lower priced programs to produce work of such quality is both heartening and useful information for our potential designer readers! So does Robert have any tips for designers just starting out? He says worry first and foremost about investing in the passion that is causing you to create. You have to love what you do and use all the tools available to create your vision. It is no good focusing simply on making money or getting your name well know, those will come in time. It is the design passion that drives the creative engine. We asked about any texturing tricks that Robert may have picked up over the years he has been designing. “I am still experimenting with that to be honest. I think what you have to do is really release two versions of the same house and just put them in the one package. That is the plan going forward, though
not implemented yet. The default for Galland Homes now is to make one home which will focus more on textures coming to life through normal maps should advanced lighting be used. For example, the stone walls and pathways etc. really can look wonderfully real with normal maps used.” “The ‘Hanalei Retreat’ mesh home has this feature and under normal lighting, you will see some shine on the wood floors as well. Well, with advanced lighting checked of course!” Every home he makes is a consideration of what will make a successful dwelling. Mesh allows him to give finer details, texture wise. Hence, sharper architectural details on pieces such as railings, balustrades, coving, window surrounds and flooring gives more realistic and pleasing results. He also takes into account traffic flow around the rooms and hallways, the efficient use of space without any area seeming cramped and what works with various camera angles. Building comfort into a home is a creation of atmosphere through various textural elements, warmth, lighting, shadow work. We wondered how Galland Homes products would work in skyboxes... they certainly look amazing on the ground, near water or forest. “I have one that I need to finish that I was really learning mesh architecture on before going off to some of the ground based projects. As with anything, I was stumbling through the learning process then. To be honest, with what I know now, I could probably have that thing done in a weekend. I used to have a skybox division, which was in the days of prim builds and they did well. I felt those builds were obsolete, so I discontinued them. Mesh is really the way to go. To be honest, every house I make could be a sky box. Sometimes I think people bring a lot of real life perception into Second Life®. Lockable doors and windows add a sense of security, yet people can cam into homes and sit on furniture absent an orb. My models are set in the ground as if they’re brick and mortar, but can rezz at any altitude and stay there as there is no gravity in Second Life®. It is all about perception.” It certainly is! So why not rezz a platform, place a home down and landscape around it? Lifted up above ground level it does create that idea of privacy and if it is not too high, the Second Life® sky will still be apparent at the top of the platform. It is definitely a decorating idea with masses of possibilities. We noticed that Galland Homes come with a lot of features above and beyond what might normally be expected. For instance, there is a ‘Home System’ included which has a customisable security aspect offering features convenient for use by landlords. Another plus is a teleport feature which allows the owner to store SLurl’s to their favourite Second Life® destinations and teleport to them by using the house control system.

Robert says, “A lot of that is due to the ingenuity of a few scripters I have worked with over the years. Some features from an older system were brought forward when I had scripts redesigned and my current scripter threw in ideas like the teleport feature you mention. I think that the design of the house should come first and foremost, but if some bells and whistles can be added which perform well, it is nice to offer them.” We asked if Robert preferred any particular period of architectural design, and what his inspiration for housing style was in general. “I think I have favourite styles versus a favourite time period, though I think what architects of various styles are doing now across genres is awesome. First, I love log homes and modern luxury log homes amaze me from their methods of construction through to their finalized vision. I think that being in Second Life® and knowing that people are typically here to live out dreams, I tend to build on the side of luxury or to obtain the feel of something that is custom and unique. I’ve been fortunate to travel to Hawaii a few times and have also been in California, Florida and the Caribbean. I really get influenced by what I see there. As in real life, the materials and textures used really make the home, no matter what style.” So what future plans does Robert have for Galland Homes? He’s been recovering from a debilitating illness for the last couple of months so things have been slower. He started 2015 with a flourish, releasing the ‘Naples’ home which was subsequently followed by the stunning ‘Anini’ beach home and some popular landscaping products. As the illness took hold, though, it was enough to keep up with the demands of his real life profession. However, he’s back on the usual tracks now and will release new homes and also kitchens very soon. For instance, the ‘Antique White Kitchen’ was released at the 2015 Home Show but without animations and props, so that will be updated. The ‘Appalachian’ - an old log home - is almost redesigned as a partial mesh log home with all the bells and whistles of that particular house style. The ‘Anini’ home recently received a matching wall system kit and very beautiful it is, too! Robert says that he’s also working on two suburban style homes to offer something for the family role players which are so prevalent now. These will be along the lines of a typical suburban brick and siding home. Plenty of architectural goodness in the pipeline then!

T HE WAST EL A NDS: Wastelands style is a post apocalyptic vision but it is not one of despair. Instead it is all about the reclamation of land, dwellings and even heart and soul. Mostly it is envisaged in regions that have been blasted by war and turned into desert lands enlivened by the occasional remains of decaying cities. Often hills stand out as mountains in an otherwise flattened environment. Think the ‘Mad Max’ films. Out of all this chaos comes unrepentant humanity striving against the unforgiving elements and existing solely on their ingenuity. Cue all sorts of repurposed dwellings, furniture and extraordinary inventions! Yurts, geodesic domes, shelters, underground bunkers and teetering swamp huts on stilts little the landscape. Old car parts, chains, elevated platforms, cables, old torn fabrics, rope, rusty junk and scattered bones are resourcefully transformed into objects of utility and in some cases, beauty. It creates hope in an otherwise hopeless scenario. It may also create tribal struggles and consequent emblems such as boundary landscaping and signs, objects of territorial defence and security. Transport is another area of wastelands invention with solar energy being the only viable method of power. Wastelands is in some ways related to Steampunk but with the difference being that it is repurposed pieces used in building objects rather than creating alchemy out of otherwise untouched constituents of any design build, however the two do share some elements of style and are often intertwined in role play communities. There are a number of Wastelands role play groups in Second Life®, which can be found by putting ‘Wastelands’ into a Second Life® search in Groups. Not only can some decent gaming be found but also many of the sim lands created are magnificent photo opportunities. For instance, ‘Ruin Nation’ is an official role play group for the Wastelands Estate. You can find them by searching for color wheels on the Internet. We decided upon a collection of blue-based art to create the blue room and her beautiful fall pictures became the framework for the design of a home office.

Dreamscapes Art Gallery has prospered since its inception in February of 2007. If you’ve not been lately, then treat yourself to a leisurely stroll. Dreamscapes’ owner, Carlotta Ceawlin, has turned her gallery upside down and settled into a large three-story home and an equally impressive barn. She leads me through the massive house and we take a seat at one of the many comfy sofas. She passes me a cup of steaming hot tea and we fall easily into relaxed conversation. “My virtual life began in February, 2007. I started very soon to take pictures. The creativity of virtual builds amazed me and it still does today. I rented my first parcel of land in late 2007, made my first very small gallery and called it Dreamscapes Art Gallery.” She smiles and takes a sip. My eye follows the lines of the room, encompassing not only her furniture creations but her delightful art. “What is your creative outlet in real life, Carlotta?” “Many things. A big part of it is music, painting, photography -- art in general -- literature and nature. I love to travel and discover landscapes, culture and people. I´ve studied literature and sociology and am working in both domains to earn my real life food, and the food for our horses and cats.” She pauses and laughs. “Thinking about it, I´m working mostly for their food.” Every artist is motivated and inspired by things unique to them. I can’t help but wonder what moves this talented lady and put the question to her. “What motivates an artist to create? That is a complex question.” A thoughtful smile brightens her face as she gives it consideration. “ I guess I want to share my vision with those who are willing to watch, listen and discover their own feelings in the process. I showed one of my pictures to five different people once and asked them which emotions and feelings they have upon studying it. Overall, I got five different answers. That is wonderful, there is no right or wrong in what an artwork means. It`s just important that it speaks to you and which emotions it causes. “So, as far as inspiration . . .? Life, the universe and everything! A song can inspire me, a book, an amazing sunset, a foggy day in winter, my cats sleeping in a pile of blankets, the colors of an autumn forest. The list is almost endless. The so-called little things in life mostly, I´m blessed with a vivid sense of imagination. We finish our tea and she takes me on a tour of the new gallery. I’ve been a frequent visitor to Dreamscapes over the years, and I’m excited about the many changes she has made. The gallery is set up similarly to a furniture store, where art and furnishings are set into groupings. “You’ve made some major changes at Dreamscapes Art Gallery. What is your vision for the future of the gallery?” “I had the feeling it was time for a change and I´m very happy with the results -- so far. I´m not entirely done yet, but as I see it, the journey is the destination. I hope the gallery will develop further as it has over the years and that visitors simply enjoy their stay and leave with a positive feeling -- to come back soon for new impressions. My gallery is my little slice of Second Life® and I´m very happy to share it with everyone who likes my vision. Every piece is made with my heart and soul and I take this very seriously. I do not offer any item before I´m completely pleased with the result.” She smiles once more. Carlotta smiles a lot and radiates joy. She’s one of those people you just enjoy spending time with. “ You are an artist as well as a furniture builder. How do you see the two working together?” “I started building in Second Life® after I opened my first small gallery, simply because I wanted to have furniture and decor to go with my artwork. Of course, I found good items, but not exactly what I had in mind. I thought, this is Second Life®, you can create your own stuff. So get busy woman! Surprisingly, after a while, I enjoyed building as much as creating art. Let´s not talk about the first efforts please,” she says with a hearty laugh. “Many of us look back and evaluate where we’ve come from and wonder what our life would have been life had we taken a different path. Would you have done anything differently,” I ask. “Strangely enough, no. I wouldn´t change a thing! Every experience I made through the years -- and there have been some weird and surprising ones,” she says grinning mischievously. “They were all things I´ve learned from -- and I´m still learning.”

Visiting Dreamscapes is like visiting grandmom’s farm house – complete with critters. The tantalizing scents of autumn are in the air, and fallen leaves paint the ground in vivid umber shades. The surrounding mountains are reminiscent of Carlotta’s real life home in Bavaria. We walk down the mossy rock-lined walkway back to the house for a cup of cider before I leave. “You know, Carlotta, there are primarily two types of people in Second Life® – those that come to play at being someone else and those who are fully themselves. May I ask, which camp you are in?” She doesn’t even hesitate. “Second Life® isn`t a game for me: It is an extension of my real life. I`m always aware of the fact that behind every avatar is a real person and I don’t act any differently here than I do in real life. Of course, I`m not able to fly or teleport in real life, which is a shame!” That easy laughter returns. “For good and bad, the answer is simple. I am just me!” Her answer comes as no surprise to me.
