Old and new faces... Dear Readers, After our last issue had been released, we heard about the passing of Scarlet Chandrayaan of Alouette. Very sad news to hear but at the same time we felt lucky that we’d had the chance to feature Scarlet in our magazine. Second Life® will not be the same without her insanely cute and amazing creations. Scarlet’s real life best friend is keeping the Alouette store open, along with help from donations, and we recommend making a trip to Alouette to enjoy and perhaps purchase some of the designs yourselves. We have some new sections in our magazine this issue and hope that you’ll like them – Decorator’s Block, LTD’s Shopping List and LTD’s Ones to Watch – plus Art Scene has returned! I would like to welcome Kylie Sabra to our amazing team and we hope that you enjoy her section. Our last issue marked the leave of our Editor in Chief, Absinthe, who will be sorely missed but fortunately for us she is staying on the team. Our fearless owner and publisher of the magazine is now in the Editor’s seat and has brought some new sections to LTD. This issue is jam packed with amazing spreads and the images are just jaw droppingly beautiful (apart from mine of course!). We hope you’ll find tons of inspiration from this issue and enjoy our “Fifty Shades of Gold”, too. As I’ve said before, we have an amazing team here and I feel lucky to work alongside them so here’s to them and our dear readers and may the decorating bug be with you! Happy reading,
Elvi H artley Elvi Hartley LTD CE O

Summer is here... I didn’t want us to do a very typical, seen every year type of issue, which is full of flowers, beaches, pools and so on. Instead, I wanted to bring fun, vibrant and luxurious ideas and turn them into stunning interiors. I personally have a thing for gold right now. I believe gold in an interior in any world looks stunning. It can really be that ‘wow factor’ someone is looking to create. It can also be very dramatic, classy and tasteful if done right. We have a fabulous ‘Living in Technicolor’ spread this issue which was handed to Tracei Moore. Tracei is great with color in his interiors so he was a perfect fit for this. Along with the photography of Jordan Giant, it is one of the best looking spreads we have produced since we began magazine production. We had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing Jake Vordun of Fancy Decor. A rising brand on the grid that has been getting more and more attention since the beginning of 2015. He has some fantastic little pieces in his store, great for accessorizing a room. Stylist Jackson Verlack did a wonderful job decorating with his pieces for his feature story this issue. Our July/August Issue is our version of the September issue of Fashion. Each year, I will create a list of 5 brands in a new section called ‘One’s to Watch’. This is a feature where I personally will select 5 brands or people from within the Home & Garden market in Second Life® who I believe deserve some extra recognition, whether it be for their work in the past, present, or future. I truly hope you enjoy reading this issue, get inspired by the images and interiors, and leave wanting to shop, decorate, and support the wonderful Home & Garden creators in Second Life®.
Happy Reading and Love to Decorate,

Jake’s been a Second Life® participant for just over five and a half years. He’s a young chap who’s gone through music college studying the violin and viola. He graduated in May 2014 and at the present time he manages a garden centre which he finds very enjoyable. Second Life® has also become a part of his working life. We caught up with Jake to quiz him on his experience of Second Life® and to learn more about his company, Fancy Decor. Jake first started Second Life® purely out of curiosity for the virtual world. Once he was in it wasn’t long before he had the desire to create things. He started by building simple prim picture frames before taking a lengthy break from Second Life®. When he returned he decided to concentrate on the social part of Second Life® as everything had changed in the building world and Mesh had come into operation in a big way. His desire to be creative however, did not diminish. About a year back, his best friend and owner of ‘Garbaggio’, helped Jake to learn the basics of 3D modeling programs. He started to create his own Mesh designs and Fancy Decor was born! We talked about the tricky balance between enjoying the creative aspects of Second Life® and the whole process of generating real life money from the creations. Should folks just enjoy creating and not worry too much about making money? Jake thought for a while and then said, “As a designer I think it’s important to take inspiration from things, and create what you enjoy, while also keeping in mind your customer base and what they may like. I think that’s an important balance in a business. If you successfully manage to do this, I do think it’s possible to derive an income from Second Life®, though it should not be the driving force.” He regarded the profits from a business as a bonus for doing what he enjoyed rather than the money becoming the only motive. Jake continued, “I think because so many people do see it as a source of income, it tends to get a bit more serious. When you have to fill out tax forms, things change! It makes you stop and think wow this is a real thing I’m doing here. But I absolutely don’t think it should be just about the income, as I said, have fun, and do what you enjoy!” We asked Jake about the other pursuits he enjoyed in Second Life® . He isn’t one to stick to his building platform all the time but likes to get out and about finding new places, events and things to enjoy. Sometimes he’ll visit clubs or explore new sims. One of his favourite things to do is to go shopping with friends. He’s pretty good at multitasking, often chatting with friends whilst building. He has a slip on the Blake Sea where he keeps a sailboat and tries to go sailing with friends once in a while, finding it a
fun and relaxing adventure. Next we asked Jake what inspired him to create a certain style or piece of decor. Did he have a favourite time in history and/or architectural design period that motivated him to create? Jake said, “Many things inspire me to create. I love metal and wood paired together, and that’s where the more industrial look of many of my products comes in. It’s kind of a rustic combination, the two of them together. A period which stands out in furniture design for me is definitely the mid-20th century, which is where I get many of my mid-century ideas. Throughout Fancy Decor you will also find renaissance inspired pieces, which is a time period I am fascinated with as well. I wouldn’t say I’ve made anything in that STYLE I guess, but I do have items from that period, like maybe late medieval/early renaissance manuscripts, some art, and of course the clavichord.” We learned that the Fancy Decor manuscripts are actually scans of medieval manuscripts Jake owns in first life. He’s a big fan of manuscript history. When we asked if he’d consider bringing out some renaissance based furniture he confessed that he’d need to do more study before tackling the intricate designs of renaissance woodwork. One thing that draws Jake back time and time again to mid-20th century design is the fact that not only does the style look vintage or retro, but it also has a modern, sleek and fresh appeal to it. He said, “Something like the Eames chair, while it’s from the 50s, it’s still timeless and modern.” American designers Charles (1907-1978) and his wife Ray (1912-1988) Eames made groundbreaking contributions to many creative fields including architecture, furniture design, industrial design, graphic design, fine arts and film. It was their experiments with fibreglass that led to the production of one of their most recognisable pieces still today: the Eames plastic armchair. This iconic piece was first presented in 1948 at the New York Museum of Modern Art’s ‘Low cost furniture design’ competition. The comfortable shell, made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, was combined with a variety of bases to create different looks. Fascinating, indeed!

Jake is a big fan of Home & Garden events in Second Life® and we discussed the value of these as opposed to selling at an inworld store or off Marketplace. He said, “I think they’re a great way to release new items to more people, with more hype. I think customers enjoy going to a place where they know they will see lots of new products and ideas in one place. Events definitely help keep me productive, because with deadlines, I know I will be creating something new every month, or every two weeks, etc. Still, I think main stores are very important. The main store is where you showcase all of your work as a designer, and a place where a customer can see your brand as a whole. Marketplace alone can be distracting, as you can be looking at decor one minute, then see a related clothing item the next and be in a different shopping experience. It is convenient, though, and you have so many products at your fingertips. Much more than you could see store hopping inworld. But as a designer, I think it’s important to have your work inworld for everyone to see in one place.” We discussed a new event that started in July called ‘Mix’. It was a bit of a departure from the usual event in that it was a HUD based shopping experience that allowed customers to visit the participants’ main stores around the Grid. Jake was excited to be taking part in the first round and to see what the potential shoppers would make of it all. We noted that many of Jake’s pieces are small decorative items, beautifully rendered and textured, often intricate, and we wondered if he experienced any specific design challenges when creating them. Was there a balance to be struck between highly detailed pieces and low land impact? He said, “I use 3D Studio Max to create my products. Sometimes I do run into situations where I’m not sure how to tackle a specific task and I’ll either consult the internet for help, or more often than not, figure it out by trial and error. I always strive to get as much detail as I can in a product, while still keeping it low in land impact. Most of my items are 1-2 land impact, and I think that’s a good range to keep things. I also use Photoshop Creative Cloud to make my textures. It makes Photoshop much more affordable, since you’re paying a monthly fee, versus buying the entire suite at once. And with 3D Studio Max, I was lucky that they offer a 3-year student license! Materials are new to me, but I have been
51
integrating them into my newer products. I think they make things look amazing with the proper graphic settings. That being said, I know many people can’t walk around Second Life® with the advanced lighting model on. Because of this, I make sure that my creations look great without the advanced lighting model, making the Materials an added bonus.” Does Jake have a favourite piece of work? “It’s hard to pick a favourite, because my opinion of my work is always fluctuating. Lately, I’ve been going a bit out of my comfort zone in 3D modeling, trying different methods, etc. So if I had to pick a favourite right now, it would be the ‘Milneaux Collection’ that I released at Shiny Shabby in June. I used modeling methods that were new to me, and I am happy with the end result!” And what were his future plans for Fancy Decor? “As of right now, I only plan to keep creating new furniture and decor for Fancy Decor! I am sure when the time comes I will give the new Second Life® a try, but I don’t think Fancy Decor will be going away any time soon!” And we had to agree! Why not visit the store? Fancy Decor has been recently re-modeled and there are some fine group gifts to pick up. You’ll find them inworld here. • • •

watch SCARLET CREATIVE Charlotte Bartlett Charlotte Bartlett and her brand have been around in Second Life for what seems like forever. Scarlet Creative is constantly growing and keeping itself on top. It seems she has moved more into the prefab market these days, but we are not complaining, they are stunning! We have much admiration for this brand and can’t see it going anywhere anytime soon.

We challenged our Stylists with Animal Print Interiors. Don’t be afraid to experiment new things, you just have to know how to incorporate it in the space because there is a fine line between trendy and tacky. You should make animal print your focal piece of the room. It is aggressive yet playful all in one. If you want to create a room that stands out from the crowd due to its bold appearance, yet is inviting and comforting at the same time dare yourself to incorporate animal print.

Taking unusual spaces and transforming them into a welcoming room... With our personal spaces getting smaller (think Tiny Houses), no square inch of your home should go unused, or worse, packed with stuff you don’t know where to put. Once you identify that space in your home, re-imagine it in the context of your lifestyle. Do you need more space to work, play video games, read, knit, do you have a collection of object that could be displayed? Make it happen! Put in a chair, add a side table and a lamp – instant room. Put in a desk and chair, add task lighting and you have a cozy work area. If the space is truly nonfunctional, add a large piece of art or mirror placed on the floor to reflect light or mount floating shelves. Display books, art or pieces from a collection that may be packed away. These small, awkward spaces gives us the opportunity to add personality to our home and show off who we are. There is no lack of inspiration – as close as the next click on the Internet. I was inspired to create a space where I could gaze out the window or lose myself in word games for a quiet afternoon – a luxury I don’t often have. I placed a desk/table in front of the double windows to display an assortment of my favorite objects. I added very comfortable chairs and a table which holds my crossword puzzles and coffee. All that’s left to do is find time to enjoy my newly purposed oasis.

She sweeps away the darkness with her laughter – unfettered, raucous. Molly bloom is a free woman in every sense, not molded by the whims of others, nor chained by the dictates of society. In other words, Molly is an artist. So imagine my chagrin, as I settle in to write this homage – I mean article, to hear these words, “I just canceled all my future exhibits for a moment to reflect on how my art evolved, and where it could be going.” Molly says, “My first series of this work appeared in The Rose Gallery, which I had made my goal to exhibit at since I first started becoming interested in art in Second Life.” I had met Molly a few months previous, and ultimately invited her to exhibit at The Rose Art Gallery when I was curator. Her show in November 2014 was the most successful show I’d curated, which is saying a lot as I had worked with over 400 artists in my tenure there. Molly brings something entirely different to the table. Humor is her paintbrush. She sees the laughable in our day-to-day lives and conjured a means to make her images step out of their framed prisons and into our living rooms. She evolves – never satisfied with the status quo – even her own. “When I started in Second Life, I’d never worked in digital art, and photography for me was a mystery in either world. When a friend mentioned I might enjoy this activity in Second Life, I laughed at him. I am the person with the shaky, blurry RL photos, even with an automatic zoom. Slowly, tentatively I tried to be artistic with my pictures. Of course they were hideous. Nonetheless, I became obsessed with the effort,” she says. Molly started with few skills and less knowledge. “I had no idea at the time how to use Photoshop, how to crop, how to color correct or even how to put my name on my pictures.” She had to learn to build and manipulate her avatar. “This learning evolution was a very important step if I really wanted to show my audience the visuals in my head,” she says. Friends who believed in her, and believing in Molly’s vision is a simple matter, helped her get her first exhibits, taught her about lighting and gifted her with programs to help with posing her avatar. Her work was first introduced into the erotic galleries. “It was thrilling and scary! The curator was supportive, and gave me another exhibit. I worked hard to make more interesting art, and eventually became a resident artist. Ultimately, I tired of having a great picture in my head but then having to steer it towards erotica. I wanted to do something fun. I just wanted to giggle, giggle and giggle. “I was an art history student in college and have always been fascinated with Chiaroscuro, or the use of strong contrasts of dark and light. Artists Raphael, Caravaggio, Rubens and a host of others from the 15th Century are known for this technique. My first serious work was a reproduction of this lighting technique. The Chiaroscuro lighting technique became my signature. From there, I played with adding 3D elements. Every single evolution led to another. As any artist will tell you, it is a constant challenge to review, alter and raise your own bar.” Molly seeks growth in all areas of her life. She recently completed her Masters of Health Education degree, with a nutrition specialization. “Where I go from here, I have no clue right now. What I do appreciate is being able to stop for a moment and reflect on where I came from.” I’m featuring some of Molly’s latest work in this article – work that may never be publicly exhibited. It’s just too good to be missed. May you laugh – unfettered and raucously. Visit Molly Blooms’ Gallery

“I wanted to take a look at what us baby boomers are going to be like when we get old. Basically it’s more about old people being “people”. Being a certain age doesn’t have to turn you into someone boring.”

Instructions... • WRITER: ROOKY YOOTZ • STYLIST: ROOKY YOOTZ • PHOTOGRAPHER: BAMBI FOXDALE
STEP ONE
Start with a base... Choose furniture that fits your space, and your style. Ask yourself what your needs are. How much workspace do I need? What about storage? What chair suits my needs? I like having a larger workspace to spread out on, but I don’t need much storage, so I chose a larger desk top with a flat file and a shelf on either side. For seating I chose a comfortable, stylish chair that contrasts the straight lines of the desk.
STEP THREE
STEP TWO
Place functional pieces... A desk is usually a multifunctional space where you may do many things. You might write a letter or list, use a computer, or take a phone call. Whatever you do at your desk, it needs to work for your needs. At my desk I use the computer more than anything, so the main focus was just that. I placed my computer off centered so I was left with extra space for other tasks.
Add lighting... It always helps to pay close attention to lighting in a workspace, I find having two different light sources works best for me. I chose an adjustable task lamp to shine light where I need it while I work, paired with an ambient light source provided by the shaded lamp to illuminate the area in an indirect light for day-to-day use. For a final touch I added some accent lighting with a couple candles.
STEP FOUR
Add decor pieces... After all the functional pieces have been positioned you can begin to add your decor and personal touches. I kept it simple, adding a few succulents, and some of my favorite decor pieces to finish off the space. I opted to hang clipboards on the wall rather than art to create a functional display piece perfect for displaying notes and reminders.
