LTD FROM THE PUBLISHER stress, but discovered that I actually think it is something I was born to do. After blogging Home Decor for a long time, meeting amazing content creators and those who bring their dreams to life, one being Apple Fall, it inspired us both to create this magazine. A resource for everything Home and Garden related and the perfect outlet to showcase the talented residents who make this world so beautiful. I’m not going to ramble on anymore. Myself, Apple, my husband Rico, Senior Editor Shae and the rest of the team just hope you enjoy reading our first publication. We believe this is the first step into a great new experience, not only for us, but also for you as readers. Have fun and remember, whatever you create here, it doesn’t matter if somebody else doesn’t like it, if you like then that is all that matters. It is YOUR dream. Always LOVE to DECORATE. Back in early 2013, myself and Apple Fall had this mad idea to create a quality Home & Garden publication for the residents of Second Life. Why? Simple. Second Life is an incredible platform to create dreams. One thing I believe we all have in common, is that we appreciate anything beautiful. Here, they can come in the form of our homes and landscapes of this virtual world. I came to Second Life in 2009 and saw it as a world of endless possibilities. I tried my hand at a number of different things and amongst it all, one thing I always loved and kept on doing, was decorating. I found it to not only be a theraputic and let go of any

LTD AN EDITORS NOTE

After spending over a decade of my first life in the publishing industry I knew without a doubt that I’d never have a desire to venture into it within my Second Life. Why would anyone want to spend all day doing something only to come home to more of it? For five years I managed to hold onto this mind set. That is until my very good friend Editorial Clarity presented me with this particular opportunity. Perhaps I agreed out of loyalty to my friend who for years has helped me when I have asked. Perhaps I agreed due to a desire within myself to help better the community of Second Life. Or, perhaps my friend asked if I would be interested when all the planets, moons and stars were aligned just right. Regardless of my reasons for finally giving in, I am here and I have enjoyed every second of watching this publication grow from an idea to a reality. I have had the pleasure of aiding in the hand selection of each and every member of this magazine, a process that was previously uncharted territory for me. The two first life publications I have worked for were already well established before they allowed me 9

into their ranks you see, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect when we put the call out across blogs and social media. The number of superbly talented residents who responded was over whelming and shocking to say the least. Over the past six weeks I have met so many new people, made wonderful new friends and have been taken back by their various talents time and time again. I am excited for the publication, for our team, for the talented artists and content creators and for you, our readers. Our goal has been to produce and promote the quality work of Second Life’s home and garden content creators. I believe we’ve fulfilled that goal and sincerely hope that you enjoy what follows in this issue and the others that will follow. Brightest of blessings to you all.

“One brand that has successfully made minimalism translate-able is ARIA. ARIA’s product is unique enough to not feel mass-produced, nor is it strongly niching to the point of alienating consumers.”

Bold & Brave Written by: Zuleicca Resident Photography by: Yelo Uriza, Miaa Rebane, Editorial Clarity

Minimalism is not something we encounter often in Second Life. From storefronts to public spaces to personal living spaces, we like our slice of virtual domain to exhibit who we are, and what better way to do that than our choice of decorative items? We put a premium on busy textures and artistic clutters, and we fill every nook and cranny to avoid stark empty spaces. Why wouldn’t we? To not do so would seem such a waste in a virtual world where items are relatively cheap but the actual space and land impact used are priced at a premium. This is perhaps why minimalist offerings is rare on the grid. From the get-go, minimalist element is its own enemy: Zen spaces cannot effectively be decorated with intricate furniture, and yet stark minimalist furniture feels out of place amongst homely artifacts. 11

One brand that has successfully made minimalism translate-able is ARIA. ARIA’s product is unique enough to not feel mass-produced, nor is it strongly niching to the point of alienating consumers. The core focus is clean lines and modularity, but textured in a way that it would not feel out of place in a less-than-Zen styling. There are clutters; the important little details that matters for a lived-in presentation, but one that is conveyed in a very Zen-like manner. From the tidily placed towels on her Samsara set to the careful clutter of her Raquel Office, ARIA’s product fits the consumer who is looking to achieve the oxymoronic vision of ‘aesthetically organized clutter’.

Born in Ukraine, educated in Italy and now residing in Brazil, Yelo Uriza of ARIA comes equipped with backgrounds in Interior Design and Political Science. Two disciplines that are in stark contrast of each other, but perhaps gives us an accurate peek of her eclecticness. One only needs to look at ARIA’s recent offerings for September’s Arcade: a set of whimsical Daliah Animal Stools. “I prefer minimalism and clean lines but that´s not all I can do. I like to be challenged and challenge myself with things that are also not my usual line of work. That is how I got to those Aracde gacha items.”

Yelo knew she wanted to create in Second Life even before her virtual incarnation. “I initially logged in because my then boyfriend (now husband) told me I could create stuff in this ‘game’,” she said. He quickly got bored with Second Life but she chose to stay and create. Her first creation was a full-prim loft bed which was never set for sale. Her first mesh creation, however, is still available instore. She divulged that the Yarina mini set might not be in store for so long. “I always replace old with new,” she said, and mentioned that she recently updated her bubble chair to mesh.

“Mesh gave me more freedom and allowed me to create things that with sculpties were nearly impossible. Mesh itself wasn´t too bad for me to learn. I prefer Maya though I occasionally use 3DS Max. My advice to those starting to learn mesh would be not to overwhelm themselves with too much information quickly. Take it slow, take it simple and build the skill as you go. Owning a business in Second Life is pretty much like owning one in Real Life; it´s a lot of hard work and it´s your real time, skills and passions that go into it. One must like what they do first. I have to like whatever I make or there´s no reason to make it.”

While meshing was not a huge challenge for her, she admitted that content creation is not always easy. “The most challenging part is more often the scripting part,” she said. “I don’t do my own scripting and being dependent on other people to translate your ideas into working items is often hard.” She has previously released four houses as a collaborative work with Mike Denneny. “Collaborating with Mike was a constructive and interesting experience. Working with other people on a creative level there will always be a clash of wills, ideas and often egos,” she reflected. “You learn to open your mind to ideas that are sometimes foreign to you and to compromise over elements that previously seemed important.” While she would never exclude future collaborations with other creators, she is more reticent about releasing houses. “I’m unsure about making houses as it’s not something I personally enjoy making,” she confessed. Unfortunately, you minimalist fans will have to wait!

You could assume that having a real life background with qualifications in Interior Design would make someone approach a designing job in an academic, clinical way, but you would be wrong. Judging by her eclectic offerings, it is not surprising that she can garner inspiration anywhere. “I’m inspired by many things, be it a walk outside, seeing something on TV or while reading some design blog online.” So what does the future holds for ARIA? What can we expect in 2014? “Many great things,” she grinned.

Step into the world of virtual wonder and open your creative minds. That is where Second Life will come into play. Second Life has become a platform for many home builders, furniture makers, bloggers, and more to express their creativity.

Roost Homes has taken Second Life by storm. With an appreciation of the visual artistry displayed from their very first home a few months ago to their most recent releases, it is no surprise that many people within Second Life are living in a Roost Home. I was lucky enough to get the chance to speak to the makers of Roost Homes and get some insight into their minds and imagination! Roost Homes began as a collaborative effort between a couple who live and work alongside each other. Marrying their creative visions, each home

produced is a stellar example of the quintessential family residence. When asked what motivates this couple to design such aesthetically pleasing environments in a virtual world, their response made this writer smile. “I guess our vision was to make our homes an experience,” commented one of the designers. “It wasn’t just something with four walls to fill in Second Life, but to actually create a feel; a proper home for families in this pixilated world that we love, and spend so much time in.”

As with any true artist, hindsight only reveals to this duo the imperfections of their first contributions to the Roost Homes brand. While this couple may be cringing when finding their hardly-noticeable mistakes, it does not affect the purchase decisions of the loyal Roost Homes patrons. In each labor of love, the duo relies upon their computer design backgrounds to get the creative juices flowing. Perfectionism reigns supreme in each of the amazing homes, which each take approximately three to four weeks to complete. Each home has a unique accent, whether it is a basement, garage or walkway. These 37

small differences add the perfect touch of reality to the virtual landscape, keeping our tongues wagging in excitement for the next release. From the welcome feedback received, the couple has been able to adjust their creations to suit the needs and desires of their fan base. One of the most recent releases, the Dill Hurst home, was created based upon customer requests for a smaller version of a quaint Roost Home. When visiting their shopping area, you feel as though you are walking through a quaint village, dotted with unique landscaping

and small touches that help to evoke the feeling of tranquility. With this interactive approach to design, it is no wonder this brand has taken Second Life by storm and is quickly becoming one of most sought-after home and garden creators. The latest release from Roost Homes is a smaller, southwestern style home named Carino Way. This residence is designed for individuals who do not have large families, or who may be living on smaller parcels of land. The images featured in this article showcase the fabulous texturing and unique build-

ing style this couple brings into Second Life. If you are a fan of Roost Homes and are looking for more, never fear! The creators hinted that many future projects are already in the works! I, for one, cannot wait to see what comes from the minds of these two extraordinary designers next. See you all in home heaven!

One Man’s Trash Written by: Sera Tokyoska Photography by: Junk

Is another mans JUNK. One of the keys to creating a great space, whether it’s your bedroom, a living area, or dining room, is to find unique pieces to add to its character. At JUNK, you will find items you won’t see anywhere else on the grid. Tab Tatham, the designer of JUNK describes her creations as a hodgepodge of things that she loves and covets in RL with the desire to bring it to life in Second Life. “Both the design and texture combinations can be quite eclectic, with the use of vibrant color and clashing styles being the main constants.”

49

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

Tab is an exceptional designer with over six and a half years in Second Life. Using 3D software for her mesh creations she creates from memory rather than importing blueprints. She also generates her own textures by hand in Photoshop giving each item she creates its own unique footprint on the grid. Her vintage style gives recycled “junk” a new name. She is very passionate in all that she does and wants to inspire you as well to be creative with your surroundings and feel at home. Tab’s real life experiences as a retail store window dresser and her work at an antique shop is what ignited her love for meshing different styles. “It was by far my favorite place simply because of the variety of items I could work with. I have always loved mixing different styles and colors together and it is where LOVETODECORATESL.COM

Her style is mostly vintage however you can always count on one thing to be consistent; color and lots of it! Her favorite furniture pieces that she has created are the recycled theatre seats which were released in October for ‘The Neighborhood’ event. “They were something I had been hoping someone would make for a long time but no one did. So I had a go”, quipped Tab. As we venture forward in 2014, new and exciting projects have been brewing away. I asked Tab, “What can we expect to see in your next project for

JUNK?” She responded, “More JUNK? And lighting. Lots of lighting!” Some of the events where you can find JUNK are: The Men’s Dept., The Four Walls Hunt, and the Neighborhood Hunt.

Another Time “Gezelligheid.” Froukje Hoorenbeek was having a hard time trying to convey a very Dutch thing to me. “Gezellig is not only people, a room or a home can be it too,” she tried again. Looking up “gezelligheid” or “gezellig” did not offer more explanation, but instead made it even more complex. This Dutch word has no equivalent in English. One can attempt to describe as a feeling of coziness, quaintness, pleasant or entertaining, but those descriptions would not even 61

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

begin to explain the word well. It is more like a state of mind towards a certain atmosphere and the elements in it. Dutch people cannot even explain this properly to non-Dutch. It is clear, however, that Fruokje’s “gezzelig” has a lot to do with homing instincts. “When I came into SL, I got a piece of land within three weeks, and started decorating,” she said. “But everything was either high prim

or low quality. So I bought modifiable furniture and looked at how it was constructed. Stripped it down, changed it…and that is how I started learning. Then I started to make it myself. The name Dutchie was given to me and my store by a friend, who probably could not pronounce or write Froukje,” she laughed. “But the more time passes, the happier I am with it. It gives me a guideline to create by. It helps me focus, because my problem is not a lack of inspiration but rather too much of it!” It sounds like a good problem to have, as we are standing outside of her 63

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

latest project: an imposingly detailed two storey, five room house. “I start with the layout of the house, and then furnishing it room by room.” She explained. “Now I am back at the house itself, then the living and dining room, then I am done. I have been working on this for one and a half years, and it’s probably not going to finish for another 6 months.” She intends to take realism to the next stage with the house.

Another World “I am experimenting on building this house on a realistic scale. Some of my fellow builders build giant houses with huge rooms and often huge furniture too,” she explained as we put on our Camera HUD. “But I am experimenting with Oculus Rift and that just looks dreadful. You have no other option than to sit on the furniture. You can stand in the rooms, look around, but they are built to sit on furniture.” An Oculus Rift ready house, can it be true? “I have it but I cannot build with it on. But it made me so aware of scale, even more so then before.”

If she is building this to scale, isn’t she worried about other’s experience? ‘Build to Scale’ has always been a problem for builders in a world where unrealistically scaled avatars roam free.“I am worried,” she admitted. “The scaling thing is scary. I really have no idea how this will be received. But Penny (creator of the Camera HUD) has graciously given me permission to distribute the Camera HUD as a freebie in my store.” Exploring a ‘built-to-scale’ house with a ‘scale-corLOVETODECORATESL.COM

My camera is not panning in and out as I navigate through doors and hallway, and climb up the stairs. I stepped into the antique filled master bedroom and am suddenly transported to the bygone era of the Dutch-East India Company. I was not far-off.

67

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

“Full with antiques, brought back from the Orient,” she said. “The couple in this house are heirs to the fortunes from the VOC (the Dutch name for Dutch-East India Company), so you are very, very close. The room across from here is the guest room. Her friend from childhood, coming over to spend a last night in the Netherlands, before she

leaves on the Holland America boat line.” The ‘story’ approach is what she uses to create. “It really starts with the house. My house is a story of two people: a couple, no kids, they are well off, though not as rich as their family used to be. It is faded glory really. Every room is another part of the story.” So much so that there is even an ‘argument’ scene in

her latest release: the kitchen. “Who has not argued after too much to drink in the kitchen? I was a bit in doubt about putting it in, but I think it is so recognizable to every adult couple.” She expanded her storyline. “With my threesome mattresses, the FFM scenario is her fearing he is getting bored with her, so she brings another woman in. The MMF is

her playing with danger, with two workers in the garden or something along those lines.” Every time we hear the word ‘Dutchie’, we think ‘sex furniture’. To Dutchie’s loyal customers, however, it is much, much more than that. Take the Bistro Table, for example. Four friends using the Dutchie’s Bistro Table will never mimic each other’s animation. No one even need to fiddle with menu and change animations unless they want to, because the animated sequence will ensure everyone moves in a realistic flow. This leaves you free to chat with your SL friends in a very RL manner. Dutchie is an example of how business acumen and consideration to buyers’ interaction can make for a 69

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

highly successful business model. Releases can be slow because there are laborious thought processes that go into making each piece of furniture. What are the buyers’ lives like? How do they interact with each other? What other furniture will they have around? “I place every animation not only in a logical order and to fit one another, but also, so no one has to adjust camera angle. You just set your camera to the bed and it will never suddenly pan into the wall.” It goes without saying that this means owners of Dutchie’s sex furniture will have their hands, well…free. “During the first stage of creation more animations are put in,” she continued. “Then I start taking away animations that do not fit my story or that are too similar to other animations.”

Loyal customers are willing to pay premium prices for Froukje’s work because it is clear that Dutchie’s pieces are never a matter of ‘mesh-it-and-installposes’. Each piece is meant to flow with each other and other furniture on the grid to create a lifestyle. “I work on a large piece of furniture, especially the adult pieces, for over six weeks full time. That is fifty hours a week or more,” she said. “Hundreds of real dollars of quality animation go in and I hire scripters for real life prices. Quality costs money. There is no way around that.”

and from YouTube tutorials”. Complemented by hard work, intense attention to detail and visions of how others will use your creations is how Froukje Hoorenbeek built her fortune. I cammed into the spacious attic and wondered what Froukje has in store for it. “I wanted to set the gay bed in the attic, for the Master of the house to meet with the butler but that would probably be too much!” she said. She was also not quick to promise. “I want this house to be ready before the home and garden expo in May. But then again, I hoped it would last year too.”

Any aspiring creator would be pleased to know that the start of Dutchie’s empire is attainable. “I was a journalist in real life. I learned everything in world

The Dream Home Written by: Britain Knave Photography by: Caitlin Tobias

I have had a passion for decorating for as long as I can remember, both in real life and Second Life. I find myself decorating for hours upon hours so when I was asked to be part of this magazine I was really excited to work with like-minded people. I am really hoping to bring some unique and inspiring ideas to your home. I plan on decorating an array of homes but this time I’ve chosen my own to share, the four bedroom Oakwood Manor by Domineaux Effect.

When I’m creating a home for my family in particular I try to make it as cozy and realistic as possible. I try to add every little detail that you would see in a real life home to make it feel lived in. Adding details that represent each family member and their unique personalities makes for a more personal feel. I would like to welcome you into the Kennedy family home and hope you enjoy what I’ve done. LOVETODECORATESL.COM

76

LTD THE DREAM HOME Dining rooms are probably my favorite to decorate and I tend to like them to be the fanciest room in the home. We often have family dinners so I try to keep our dining room elegant while still practical.

I enjoy dressing up the table and finding ways to make it more unique. One way is simply to modify items together to create a centerpiece like I’ve done here. I loved the new Loft Casolare Dining room

Formal Dining

set, so I took pieces from it for my centerpiece and table setting. I modified the Casolare mirrors to be smaller and placed them under the candles to create a nice and inviting ambiance. I also made a bar area

for the adults that includes an array of beverages, cigars and chocolates. I’ve included ‘The Loft K frame’ to the walls to represent our last name, adding a personal family touch to the room.

My favourite items here, are: The Loft - Casolare Place Setting Black - Colleen Desmoulins The Loft - Wrought Iron Planter Walnut - Colleen Desmoulins Tartessos Arts - TA Champagne and Strawberries - Nico Griffith Kuro - Ladder lamp - Luana Dawg PILOT - Bridges Bar Cart - Kaz Nayar LOVETODECORATESL.COM

bags and afternoon snacks left for them as well as various foods scattered from the preparation. I also created a coffee bar area with various coffees, a

must in any family home. Tucked away in the corner is a small breakfast nook where the kids can have their breakfast or do their homework.

LTD THE DREAM HOME The living room to most is the heart of the home, it’s usually known as the family room and I try to always add plenty of details to reflect that.

With the winter months, I really wanted this room to feel as if it were a space you would want to cuddle by the fire or watch movies as a family while cozying up on the couch. On the coffee table you will find

LTD THE DREAM HOME For the master bedroom I went for an elegant feel while still keeping a few masculine touches. I always center my bedroom decor on the bed and have a habit of modifying pieces together to create my

own headboards. I really wanted a bold headboard, something rich and classy so I modified The Loft Mathis mirrors on top of The Loft wall mount headboard to give that effect. I then took the curtains

from the Mudhoney Priya bed and modified those as well to fit around the bed to add an understated touch of elegance. Hanging curtains around your bed or lighting above will add a lot of drama to your

For the bedside tables I chose to place various pieces of make-up and a clutch for myself then a simple lamp with a couple books leaving my other half ’s table with a more masculine feel.

This bathroom is located in a rambling old house built of rough stone and stucco walls – with more than a hint of its colorful past lives. The room has large windows that afford superb views of the private beach. It’s fairly spacious with high ceilings, which could seem chilly without the added warmth of color, pattern and natural materials. A nautical theme was an obvious a choice however,

the scheme decided upon was sea life – taking the sinuous form of the octopus as central it. The wall paper is saved from being monotonous by using two sizes of the pattern, both of the same color - a rich, warm coral kept light by having it on a very, very pale base of the same shade. The chaise and the screen are covered in a coral fabric that picks up the color of the walls, with the cushion on the chaise having a single coral motif - this time in

Aged wood appears again for the loo seat and the bench upon which hosts matching basins. It provides plenty of space for bottles and shaving gear, and has twin carved mirrors above with coral ‘twigs’ adorning them. Plenty of soft fluffy towels, candles, an aroma diffuser and orchids bring a sense of pampered luxury to this space. The octopus chandelier completes the décor. With more than enough arms to light any room, his presence is sure to bring a smile to the face of any bather looking upward.

LTD SAVE THE ELEPHANTS

They need you, like never before Written by: Mozart Loordes Photography by: VeronicaLynn Parx

One sunny day in Australia, Eliza Wierwight sat down with her young son to watch a YouTube video entitled, ‘How I Became an Elephant’ https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=5ksYEdSFBLk . It changed her life and from then on she became irrevocably linked with the life work of Sangduen ‘Lek’ Chailert, an Asian leader and advocate in elephant conservation, who has risked her life and freedom for more than three decades to protect elephants from illegal trade and abuse. Having gained an official contract to act on behalf of the ‘Save the Elephant Foundation’, Eliza now uses her in world business, Patron Homes,http://maps. secondlife.com/secondlife/Patron/59/140/28 and ancillary projects to generate funds for the SEF. Although it’s illegal to deal in modern ivory in the west, there continues to be a huge trade in smuggled ivory from international sources. China is the biggest consumer, with Thailand coming a close second and last year an estimated 36,000 elephants were killed for their ivory. In Thailand, elephants are considered livestock. Wild baby elephants are captured and taken away from their mothers (who are often killed) and forced to undergo a torturous training to domesticate them, the Phajaan. This practice essentially breaks the spirit of the elephant, using fear of pain to train them to accept riders on their backs, perform tricks and paint. Along with the ivory trade, which is legal 111

in Thailand, the Asian elephants there are in a sorry state. In 1995, Lek Chailert founded the Elephant Nature Park (ENP), a special place beyond the concrete of Chiang Mai, Thailand, set in the jungle. A wondrous sanctuary for the repatriation of abused elephants, ENP is run entirely on donations and staffed by volunteers, both local and international. You can read more about the park here - http:// www.saveelephant.org/ And there’s a fascinating YouTube video on the work of Lek - https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=tuD_OUBhGhI – whose informative films have been shown on National Geographic and Animal Planet, amongst others. She has even gained patronage from the Thai royal family, so great is her standing in the community. Eliza has an SL group – ‘Save the Elephant Foundation in SL’, which has proved to be a great starting point for fundraising. secondlife:///app/group/1511377c-6ee5-ed8a-d920fc3d5e490ee8/about She says, “SEF is a Thai non–profit organization dedicated to providing care and assistance to Thailand’s captive elephant population through a multifaceted approach involving local community outreach, rescue and rehabilitation programs, and educational ecotourism operations.” Bloggers, Immersive Art, Focal Point of contact and

Her Christmas project provided sponsorship for 25 elephants, a total of US$2400 in fact, with plans this year for continued sponsorship to reach her target of 36 elephants.
