The time has come... There’s a lot of stuff going around in my head as I write this, and it has been that way for the last 2 months. Ever since I contemplated retiring from Second Life, I have had times where I thought maybe It is a mistake and after a week or so I will be wanting to log back in again. But I know it is the right time. I’m not going to make this publisher’s note a sad farewell or a lengthy post of my good and bad times in Second Life, because that’s not what I want it to be. I’m not ‘’leaving’’, I’m simply moving on to do more exciting things in real life, facing new challenges where I hope and strive to succeed. Second Life has been a tremendous part of my life for over 5 years. I have learned so much, met so many amazing, wonderful and talented people and after dabbling in a bit of everything, I found something I was truly passionate about. LTD was born with passion, dedication and commitment, not just from me, but the entire team. It has been 1 year since LTD launched, which really is such a short amount of time. That being said, during that time, we have achieved so much and reached a point where I’m happy and confident to leave the daily operations in the safe hands of my COO, Elvi Hartley (Elviramidnight). Elvi has been with the company since Day 1, witnessed many changes and has been a force within the team. LTD would not be what it is without her hard work and dedication for what we do, and that is why she is the perfect person to lead LTD in 2015. It’s funny, I started my Second Life working as an assistant at a small Home & Garden Magazine and now I’m retiring having created my own and I couldn’t be more proud. I’ll still be around, I won’t be deleting my accounts and I’ll still have some involvement with what’s going on. After all, it is my baby and I cannot wait to see it flourish in 2015 and years ahead. Thank you all for your amazing and continued support for what we do, Thanks to my hubby who has been there for me during it all, and thank you to the entire LTD family for sticking with me, my obsessive compulsive behavior and for helping to create a truly fantastic product. You are all amazing! Happy 2015 and here’s to the future!

Happy New Year to all of you! Here is to wishing a Happy New Year to all of you! This year brings many changes for Love to Decorate and some of those changes come with a heavy heart. Our fearless leader, Editorial Clarity, will be stepping down from his position as CEO. I am still shocked, amazed, and humbled that he offered this opportunity to me. I find him to be very kind, passionate, and above all else fair. I have had some poor experiences with a boss in the past in Second Life®, and so I had some reservations before accepting the position. And! I am happy to admit that he has been such a wonderful CEO, manager, creative thinker, and leader. I am forever thankful for his trust, for his encouragement, and for his insight. I wish him the best of luck with his real life endeavors, and of course I look forward to our continued friendship. For this issue of Love to Decorate, we take you to on a winter adventure. All across Second Life® residents have decorated their pieces of virtual land to reflect the chilly season of the holidays. We have invited two featured designers for this issue, the owners Vespertine and Alouette. Interested in a wintry, cozy home? We’ve picked some of our favorites for this season and our stylists have done amazing landscaping projects to inspire you. Also in this issue, you will get a peek at winter adventures that you and your friends can enjoy with all the details provided. And, if you’re prepping for Valentine’s day, you may want to visit our featured sim, Silver Moon. Or, you may want to check out a new column we’re trying this month called, “Make it Your Own” where we teach you a neat trick to spruce up your decorating. Cheers to a new year, to changes, to friendship, and to decorating to our very heart’s content.

Teleporting onto a snowy patch of land, I look ahead to see a shabby-looking brick structure. Â As I walk inside, I am absolutely overwhelmed by charm. Â From timeless treasures you may find in an old attic, to adorable little hanging origami cranes, this store owned by Amelie Knelstrom is completely filled with amazing things that you will want to buy...

Amelie’s hard work and dedication shows in every single one of her items. Everything looks like beautiful old treasure that’s had new life breathed into it, or something completely unique altogether that can make any space in your home special. A favorite piece that caught my eye was a bed called the Jordan Wire Bed. With it’s rustic frame and adorable texture-change blankets, what’s not to love? Her talent is very apparent in each of her pieces, from cute little kitchen clutter accessories to remarkable beds and chairs. All of which have a lived-in-varnishing to make any home in Second Life feel cozy. Everything you see in her store is full of character and charm. Amelie Knelstrom created an avatar in Second Life ® seven years ago, driven by a curiosity to be free to do whatever she wished. She decided to pursue making furniture because she really enjoyed decorating. She loved the way a close friend made prefabs and decorated them, so she took it upon herself to learn. Her desire to make furniture lead to a great journey of creativity, and now the wonderful, quaint store that she has today. Describing her style as “Eclectic, quirky, and sloppy,” Amelie draws inspiration from books, along with Scandinavian designs and culture. When mesh began to gain popularity, she found mesh-making similar to sculpting, which she had
done as a child, so she found it easier than some learn. Her talent can be seen in pieces like the “Blanket Fort” that’s intricately layered with soft blankets and pillows, and the “Enchanted Garden Gate” that has every part sculpted to precision and textured to look realistic. Her favorite item she’s made has been her Bookworm Gacha. Amelie dreams to bring her creativity into real life more, and to create artistic objects, illustrations, prints, and animals in real life. The stores she admires and appreciates most are HPMD, Keke, Dust Bunny, Lark, Alirium, and Tres Blah. In addition creating dec one my stay stylish! Amelie states that she loves to shop at stores such as Mikunch, Amitomo, and Pixicat for clothing in Second Life ®. When asked about her experience in this virtual world, she states that her Second Life ® has been “Full of ups and downs and interesting people from all over the world.” Amelie Knelstrom, the owner of Vespertine, has been a real pleasure to meet, and I highly encourage you to come to her store and see for yourselves all the beautiful, artistic creations she has painstakingly made over the past few years. Her work is unique, and very detailed. Until we meet again, I encourage you to remember Amelie’s favorite quote, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

Brave leaf borne on the breeze Emerald adventurer May trade winds grant your wishes!
The current issue of LTD is dedicated to a talented and brave young woman, Scarlet Chandrayaan of popular home decor brand, Alouette. Scarlet is battling with terminal cancer and has been given around two years of life based on currently known medical knowledge. She is just 26 years of age. Rarely do we consider our real lives when we play Second Life. We’re busy enjoying the creativity, escapism and social aspects available to us, making our grand plans, bruising our pockets and sometimes our hearts in the process. Amazingly, in all of this virtual flux, we manage to make friends that we come to enjoy, love and admire for their particular talents. So when we learn of a friend who is suffering in real life, naturally we want to help. ‘Leaf on the Wind’ was thought up originally by Scarlet’s dear friend, Nicola. It’s a fund raising event and its goal is to raise enough cash so that Scarlet can fulfil her wish to visit London in the United Kingdom and if possible travel around to additional places of interest and inspiration in England. Scarlet’s friend, Rors, has skilfully organised the event in Second Life and its on now through to February 1st 2015.
There’s much support from the Second Life Home and Garden community who have generously donated special pieces for sale on the theme, ‘All Things London’. Information on store locations and much more besides are available from the ‘Leaf on the Wind’ website - http://leafonthewindsl.wordpress.com/ and we’ll be talking more about what else folks can do to help later on in this article. Alouette is Scarlet’s baby in Second Life. So how did she get into making furniture and decor in Second Life? “I actually started out by making jewelry back in 2007. That then led to making poses in 2010, and then in 2012 when mesh was starting to become a bit more popular I decided that I really wanted to learn how to make it. One of the first mesh tutorials that I did was of a chair, and I think that's what kind of sparked my interest in furniture, and it just kind of exploded from there. I do use Blender, I find it to be one of the best programs for starting out on, and there are just so many blender resources out there for learning how to create mesh.”
We discussed the use of the Maya program and Scarlet thought that the price was really detrimental. At the moment she derives her main income from creating for her brand Alouette, but if she were to progress to making mesh outside of Second Life she’d consider Maya. “Blender works really well with SL, so I decided to stick with it.” We asked how Scarlet’s illness and treatment for it had affected her ability to create. Her greatest ally is her laptop since she can use it from bed if she is not feeling 100%. She tries to get ahead with work before a period of chemotherapy. This leaves her feeling extremely tired and not able to do a whole lot. She says, “Yeah, after the 48 hour chemo I usually sleep for a couple days. The shaking muscles and issues with memory are a bit rough sometimes too.” She’s a battler, though, and her regime is to, “Sleep a little, work a little...repeat LOL”. The most recent piece of news about Scarlet’s cancer treatment is hopeful. Originally her CA125 tumour/cancer marker was 130, a ridiculously high amount. At the beginning of
December it was down to 25, thanks to chemotherapy. Gene testing revealed that Scarlet’s liver has a receptor that exhibits abnormal behaviour which may be the origin of her tumours. With further liver centric treatment, Scarlet’s prognosis may improve. When asked about inspiration for design, Scarlet looked thoughtful. She has a particular style that is based partially on New England (she lives in Massachusetts, around 30 minutes or so from Boston) but it also has her own aspirations built in – that of producing soothing and comfortable, sometimes amusing pieces, that will please her customers. “I really love the homey and relaxed feeling that a lot of New England places but haha yeah, I don't think I could list just one place really, my inspiration comes from so many things. Whether it's from something I've seen, or a suggestion from a friend, and sometimes it's just a fun idea that I hope people will enjoy.”
L OV E T O D E C O R AT E S L . C O M
For instance, she really enjoyed working on the ‘Carousel Reindeer’, a Christmas piece that was a lot of fun for her to make and it shows in the joyful aspect of the decor. A proportion of Alouette furniture is made for nurseries and children and it’s a pleasure to walk around the Alouette store smiling with amusement at all the cute decor items. One of Scarlet’s favourite pieces is a toy moose, she says that it’s not really a piece of decor as such but it’s her favourite animal and she is proud of that piece. When we mentioned how soothing Alouette furniture is, Scarlet said, “I think that's a big part of why I make furniture like that. I've always tried to make SL as relaxing for me as possible and I think that's why I tend to make furniture that just makes me, and hopefully any customer, just feel comfortable.” And now a bit more about, ‘Leaf on the Wind’. Scarlet is at pains to praise her friend Rors, for the excellent job she has done in organising the event. “She really has done just an incredible job at it, and I'm truly humbled by the list of creators who are willing to donate their time and items to this. I feel so lucky to have friends that put this together.” Even before the event opened on January 10th, the donations had already superseded the L$100k mark. Scarlet remarked, “When Rors told me I was absolutely shocked, the event hasn't even started and they already have a big chunk of their goal raised, it's amazing.” The event goal is approximately USD$2500. This will enable Scarlet to obtain flights both ways, give her some extra
spending money and take into account price fluctuations. With the help of the Second Life Blogger Support group, donations have increased exponentially and at the close of the first day of blogger early access the fund had shot to L$244,128. There are a number of ways to donate. Firstly, the stores that are providing special items for sale will also have donation kiosks. Then there is an Event Auction with one off deals, each with a significant value to them. On the website - http:// leafonthewindsl.wordpress.com/ - there’s also a facility to donate directly to Scarlet via Paypal. Finally, for folks who would like to offer words of support, there is the ‘Postcards from Around the World’ scheme, organised by Arora from Australia. The aim is to get postcards from all corners of the globe and place them into an album which will be sent to Scarlet as a special gift. This is something to put a smile on her face and to let her know that many folks are supporting her and wishing her well. Often, the simplest of things can make more of an impact than the gift of money. Again, information is available on the website. We hope that readers will enjoy the rest of this edition of LTD named in honour of Scarlet and will visit the ‘Leaf on the Wind’ website and get involved! WRITER, STYLIST & PHOTOGRAPHER: EDITORIAL CLARITY I would have to say that this is my personal favorite style and definitely fits my own tastes, especially when it comes to interiors. I created this space with the idea of mixing elements, furnitures new and old, bursts and color and just waiting to see how it turned out. That is usually how I design a space, like an artist with a blank canvas. I just do things until I get to a point where I know how I want it to look at the end. Once that point is reached, the rest is easy. There is something for everyone in this space, whether it be the funky wall paper, the grand dining table or the beautiful bear rug. Mixing periods, styles and color is a great way to make your room unique and in this case...glam.

Living in TECHNI
Red is an excellent choice for a room when you want to stir up excitement. This color raises the energy level and works perfect for the individual who loves to host gatherings and want to stimulate conversations and draw people together. With red you will heighten the senses, create strong first impression and pump adrenaline like no other hue. For my set I choose to use red as an accent color to stimulate the senses and create an intimate environment.
