PUBLISHERS NOTE & STAFF PAGE It has only been a little over two months since operations at LTD began and already it has been an incredible journey. I never came into this expecting it to be smooth sailing, because it really is not. There are always challenges to be expected with anything as big as this and always will be. It is how you deal with them that is key. The first issue of LTD MAGAZINE was a tremendous success. Considering we only had three weeks to put together a magazine from concept to release, I was tremendously proud of the entire team and what we achieved together.

I am now personally happy to bring to you our March/April 2014 Issue. At LTD, we are always striving to not only showcase the big name brands, but also bring attention to the new and upcoming stores that in one or two years will be right up there with the best. This is why LARK is our cover story this month. A small brand, fairly new on the scene yet making amazing products for our homes and whose popularity is rising constantly. In the article, owner, Sienia Tervellion, talks about how she views and appreciates the work of other content creators. She does not see them as competition, she admires and learns from them. I think that is a really great attitude and it really comes across that she wholeheartedly enjoys what she does. It got me thinking about my own Second Life in a way. I have been a resident of this magnificent world going on five years and although I have encountered many sad moments, I have also lived through great ones and have enjoyed every bit of it. I wouldn’t be who I am or doing what I do today in Second Life if it wasn’t for the people who have entered my life at some point. So I would really like to take the time to thank a few people in particular who have made me into the person I am, have taught me many things and have inspired me in many ways. My thanks go to these people in particular, RicoRacer Flux, Not only the greatest love in both of my lives, but the most kindhearted person I know. Apple Fall, my best friend, confidant, work partner and an unbelievable person in my life. Frolic Mills, the greatest mentor/teacher one could have and a true genius that I shall always respect and love. Persia Bravin, the one who pulled me back up each time I fell down and who kicked my backside into gear when I needed it. Dousa Dragonash, an incredible lady whom I had the pleasure of working with in Second Life and meeting in Real Life on one occasion. Also everyone else who I have had the pleasure of working with and knowing in the past and presently. Without your impact on my life, things would have been so different. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue of the magazine and find inspiration. Always…

18 EDITORS NOTE & C88

Spring has come to those of us who live in the northern hemisphere, or at least that is what the calendar tells us. Some are still dealing with those dreadfully low temperatures and pesky snowflakes however. Apparently Father Winter did not get the memo that it was Mother Nature’s turn to have a bit of glory. Thankfully in Second Life we have the ability to choose our environment and season as we wish. So, if you happen to find yourself snowed in and you’re one of those people that converts through the seasons now would be the time. Speaking of seasons and converting my personal land is always on Spring. I like bright colors and flowers because they make me happy; who doesn’t want to be happy when they log into Second Life? I always look forward to home and garden shopping during this time of year simply because of the bright colors and sheer volume of releases. I think that once the snow melts in real life people must see green then get a boost of energy because releases are almost too hard to keep up with. Not that I am complaining! We have done our best with this issue to help you with your Spring converting! The time spent editing these articles was a complete joy as I’ve learned so much about these wonderful content creators, the people behind the avatars we’ve all grown to know as home and garden enthusiasts. I hope you enjoy learning about them as much as I have.

22 LARK: IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL

ITS ALL IN THE DETAIL Article: Mozart Loordes Photographer: Elvi Hartley (elviramidnight) Mindful of the fact that Sienia Trevellion has to be prised away from her building platform I suggested we met up in Calas Galadhon by the river, partly due to its picturesque qualities but mostly because I thought Sienia deserved a trip out. A very pleasant

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

personality, Sienia works hard in Second Life and first life where she is a designer in advertising. As we sipped on steaming cups of cocoa and watched enthusiastic visitors take boating trips down the river, we talked about life, the universe and Sienia’s business, LARK. “Have you visited the sim Pangloss,” asked Sienia, “It’s really beautiful, like walking into a dream”. I confessed I hadn’t whilst Sienia reminisced about when she first entered Second Life and had the time to explore. Now she spends almost all her time building and considers ‘creatives’ a strange breed. “I’m a terrible friend,” she says, “But I try my best. It’s always... Hi, I have this thing I’m working on. How are you?” Sienia admits to being very nerdy

23

LARK with her basic interests in things she doesn’t know very much about such as geology, weather and history. I wondered if any of those were a source of inspiration or was it the fact that she’s a homebody at heart. Noticing that LARK produces apparel as well as items for the home, I asked Sienia which she preferred to build. She was refreshingly honest. She considered that she lacked skills for the level of apparel she wanted to produce. She had a lot of ideas but also felt that the learning curve required to achieve a high level of competence in creating mesh for the avatar, rigging and allied arts, was challenging to say the least. Not wanting to release apparel she wouldn’t buy herself, she struggled with finding a balance.

Changing the subject, I asked her what was her favourite item for the home that she’d produced so far. She looked animated; undoubtedly we were getting onto her most favoured subject. The Haran Console! This piece, she felt, was ‘very her’. “I love that it feels as if it has a story to tell, it’s warm and inviting, not too fussy. It feels like something you might see in a very artsy BoHo hideaway. It’s probably the one piece I made that I feel I would use in my own decor and feel happy with it.” Digging a bit deeper, I wondered how she managed to keep her brand alive, keep it fresh and constantly in the public awareness. Typically modest, Sienia said she still had moments where she wondered if what she created was appealing, moments when

she looked at other designers work and was blown away. Was her work as good or as desirable? “I think we all have a unique viewpoint. Taste is subjective. The way you decorate and what you like is subjective. I’ve always tried to offer pieces that were well made and created with love. Something you could look at and know wasn’t rushed or finished without care.” Many a time she will rework and rework textures if she spots a flaw. It is something that she’s very careful about. “You could call that love of your work, or you could call it a sickness, I’m not sure!” Sienia will often look at pieces for a long time just to see how they were created, what care went into them. All the small parts, how precisely they are angled, joined and with what care they are textured. She doubts if everyone does the same but she’s so used to doing that now, it’s become automatic. To her, it shows how much someone has cared about their craft in Second Life, how unique they have made it. She considers that is the only thing which will make a designer stand apart. “In some ways I think we all take ourselves too seriously here, yes. In other ways, we don’t at all. We are in this amazing place where your imagination can realize things you cannot in the real world. I wouldn’t say that I constantly strive to reinvent, no. I strive to perfect my skills. If I make something today, I guarantee that tomorrow I will think of a better way I could have gone about it.”

26 LARK: IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL

I looked at Sienia’s profile; she’d been in Second Life over five years. It was a big commitment considering she’d come here initially as a sort of escape which would enable her to create whatever she wanted away from the advertising she did for a living. It was playtime in those early days. Nowadays, she derives a good chunk of her real life income from Second Life. I asked if she ever gave herself rewards. “I should be nicer to myself

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

because I don’t really give myself rewards! For a long time I had a homestead, and I miss that. It was just a place to create beautiful things and enjoy with friends and family. I’d like that again, so I think given the opportunity I’d do something along those lines. Though, if I ever have the ability, I’d love to create a sim that is purely artistic and would support the arts in SL. There aren’t enough sims to just explore and enjoy anymore. I’ve heard discus-

27

sions about it, and it would be so nice if Linden Lab would offer discounts for land that is for this type of purpose. If it were more affordable, I think we’d see the arts thrive.” Sienia makes quite a few things for the gacha event, The Arcade. I wanted to know how she was getting on in that very popular genre. “I love The Arcade probably more than any other event in Second

Life. It’s something I understand from both a customer and creator perspective, I’m a gacha addict. I love the fun of it all and I play the machines just as hard as anyone visiting the event. There’s something magical about Arcade that I don’t think other events have been able to capture. It’s been great for my brand, getting my name out there but also pushing me creatively. I find so much inspiration in what the other creators make that it feeds me for

weeks. Being part of it is really an honour. Someone is saying that they love your work enough to feel it can stand beside other amazing brands, and that’s the best feeling ever.” We went on to discuss Sienia’s plans for LARK in 2014. The sim where Sienia has her store is owned by Kehl Razor. She considers him a fantastic creator in his own right, as well as having a great sense of humour in addition to being very laid back. He makes a first-class landlord for her since he’s fronting a whole new redo of the sim and including his renters in the process. At the moment LARK is a small store, ‘In a box’ as Sienia puts it. This neither captures the look or feel of the brand. After the sim remodel, customers will find a brand new Mainstore. LARK will move to a more BoHo Chic vibe and at opening will offer many new pieces. Something to look forward to! Already a regular on Fifty Linden Friday, Sienia has recently been invited as a permanent contributor at Collabor88 – which is a real coupe - so she promises that customers will be seeing a lot more of her in 2014. My guess is so will the building platform!

ATELIER Some chairs are traditional, some are unique in their own, but they all have a story behind them. In a monthly event, chair designers and pose makers come together to create a theme or a style of their choice. In their second year of the Atelier Kreslo event, “Kreslo” meaning chair in Russian, Flutter Memel and Izzy Bereznyak are the masterminds behind this monthly chair event. Both are furniture designers on Second Life and were thinking

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

of opening a concept store at first “but the idea of inviting more people into it seemed more interesting.” says Flutter. Flutter Memel, is also the designer of “Flowey”, which specializes in poses, small décor, furniture, and Teakwood. She started creating furniture in Second Life as a side project at first. Flutter explains, “I just enjoy creating things I think are missing on the market. Small deco is my favorite,

especially food themed.” Which explains the Ice Cream Festival, Pottery Class, and Cupcake Festival events she has also organized on the side. The event is set in a cozy café setting. Here you will find great bargains, emphasized on quality, creativity, and collaboration. One might wonder what the significance with the chairs is; “Everyone likes to sit down. I always feel weird just standing there when chatting with friends. I feel like I need to sit down

or something.” Flutter added, “I thought it would be a challenge and fun to find new designers each month and come up with something new every time.” Atelier Kreslo is currently ‘invite only’ but if a designer or pose maker is interested in participating in this exciting event, drop AtelierKreslo Resident your information and they will definitely check your store out!

47 With a background in Interior Design in real life, Rayvn Hynes brings her skills and her passion to Second Life with designing furniture. Joining Second Life on June 28, 2007, she experimented with a lot of things before turning to furniture design. She explains, “I tried making a bunch of different things early on; shapes, small furniture pieces, and even attempted hair. Even after I came to Second Life, I knew I wanted to make things. Furniture just seemed natural to me. Playing with colors and patterns and how they work together, trying different styles. It

just stuck with me, and I knew that was the way to go.” When she finally found her niche, she started designing grunge type furniture with the name as “Mud and Honey” then stuck them together as one word and “Mudhoney” was born. Rayvn adds, “Although my style has changed as time has gone on, the name has still stuck with me, and just seems to fit.” Now she describes her style as more modern, casual, colorful, and comfortable. When looking for inspiration she looks to DIY and decorating blogs, color palates, and furniture websites. She notes, “I also gather inspiration from things around me.”We know that everyone loves their babies equally, but I had to ask her which one was her favorite and why. Rayvn explains, “I think my Penelope bed is my favorite right now. I hand drew a bunch of the textures and patterns on that one, and I feel like it shows my progress as a designer.”

When Rayvn is not in design mode, you can find her shopping and redecorating. “I love to shop, a lot. I also like redecorating my Second Life house, and changing it out when my husband isn’t logged in, so he’s stuck inside a house when he logs back on.” If she were able to do something else besides designing furniture it would be hard for her to choose. “I don’t

know that I would have stayed interested in designing if furniture weren’t my thing. Maybe jewelry? Nothing else really seems to interest me as much”, says Rayvn. Mudhoney can be seen in quite a few events on Second Life such as: Home Show, The Garden, Fifty Linden Friday, and The Neighborhood. On one last note, I asked her, what is the best advice anyone has given her. She said, “Never fry bacon in the nude. Also, don’t play leapfrog with unicorns.”

58 WHAT NEXT?

In Second Life we residents love to explore and discover places to go to take our pictures and to go shopping. There is a beautiful place in Second Life called Hodgepodge which happens to be home to the brand What Next. If you separate the words for hodge-podge you will realize it is a synonymous towards what the name of the sim actually means: A collection or mixture of various things. What Next was born in March 2009 by creators Winter Thorn and FrankLee Anatra. They created their store to share their pastime of building

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

and be close together while they were miles apart in real life. When speaking to this talented couple, you can’t help but smile in their presence for their passion, drive and how happy they are simply to be with each other. The talented couple knew each other before Second Life and have been together since 2008. Winter persuaded FrankLee, who is experienced in 3D modeling, to teach her how to build. FrankLee lightheartedly mentioned “She could build just fine using Second Life’s tools. Now she models using 3DS Max, the student is quickly surpassing the teacher.”.

59

FrankLee and Winter now live together in real life and they enjoy travelling. One of their favorite adventures has been San Francisco, however FrankLee particularly enjoyed driving around the Isle of Wight. They both enjoy gaming and going to live concerts. Speaking of concerts; if you haven’t heard by now, he actually performs in Second Life and has an audiobox where you can go listen to some of the songs he has played in the past! Cafe the Vine is situated on Hodgepodge and FrankLee has been known to perform there, besides it is a great place to simply relax and stare into the sunset.

While FrankLee learns how to get accustomed to English roads and tractors, they both are learning new things together when trying new ideas out and teaching one another. Each idea they test out, they try to work along with Second Life’s boundaries in what they can do with each item. When they try to explain to their real life friends that their work is in a virtual world, they never take them seriously. When they say they are working, even though they are shown what they are creating for us residents they think that Winter and FrankLee are playing instead of working!

“Trust me when I say this: Fun is guaranteed. Especially crashing into walls which Winter knows a lot about”

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

62 WHAT NEXT?

They always have more ideas for products floating around than actual time to bring them all to life. If they are not creating an item for a themed event, they are quite random in what they decide to make. FrankLee stated, “I think the hardest part for me of the ideas aspect is making sure you can transfer your desires into a functioning product within Second Life’s engine/programming limitations. One can create anything they imagine, but getting it to finally work the way you want in Second Life is the challenge.” Winter having previously worked for a gaming company, has seen the challenges first hand. Each item they have made in the past has always been unique and with their releases they always keep the element of surprise for us all. They try to build for themselves but they also hope that others will like what they produce.

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

63

64 WHAT NEXT?

They had a lot of fun with their previous and current Arcade items, especially the scooters and the golf carts. I will be surprised if someone doesn’t like either of these vehicles, because trust me when I say this: Fun is guaranteed. Especially crashing into walls which Winter knows a lot about. FrankLee feels residents of Second Life should come in protective gear when Winter is riding about on one of the vehicles!

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

Remember Laurel Cottage? I know this building is used a lot still to this day for many residents. Winter and FrankLee have been working slowly on new homes which have been kept on the back burner because they want their transition from sculpties to mesh to be perfect. They have just released a new skybox that is exclusive to The Garden event. It is their first skybox in a very long time but it has been worth the wait.

65

What Next’s birthday is this month and the brand will be turning five years old. Can you believe it? It seems like yesterday that What Next arrived and made our homes a better place. They are currently busy designing a new build and layout for the store. They feel it is time for a change. The only way is onwards and upwards for Winter Thorn and FrankLee Anatra.

THE LOFT Styling: Augusta Godenot / Nardya Rousselot Photography: Elvi Hartley (elviramidnight) Article: Augusta Godenot

The Gothic colors of winter have lost their appeal. My eiderdown comforter is no longer comforting. Recognize the symptoms? - SPRING FEVER! While spring really begins with the vernal equinox on March 20, on my sim (The Grove), spring has already arrived. In my Second Life, I am spared the drudgery of taking down winter curtains, rolling up winter rugs, and the laborious ritual called spring cleaning. I rez a new home, search my inventory for favorite accent pieces, and head out to shop for the perfect items that scream spring. I’ve had the decorating bug since I came into Second Life in 2008. The first item I purchased for my dingy, rented room was the Braedski Sofa White/Lime from The Loft and I still have it. So what better place to start my shopping spree than The Loft? Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending both Colleen Desmoulins and Nardya Rousselot. I was curious to learn more about the real women behind these two remarkable Second Life creators. Overcoming my natural shyness, I drilled them for over an hour. Colleen is the owner of The Loft. In 2012, she partnered

Although Colleen has collaborated with other designers to bring fresh perspective to her furniture and design pieces, I am especially impressed by Nardya’s work. distinctive, contemporary and modern furnishings in Second Life is her full time job. She has worked with Colleen on individual pieces since 2008 (Elizabeth Orchids and Nardya Casual Dining set), but when her shop was closed due to an unreliable landlord, she finally accepted Colleen’s offer to join her in designing furniture.

Colleen is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, but now lives comfortably in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to her joining Second Life in 2005, she worked in commercial banking – which makes for a shrewd and successful businesswoman. Before the birth of her child, Colleen studied Interior Design. Alas, the never ending duties of motherhood pre-empted her real life design career. Colleen is living her design dream, full time, through her Second Life persona.

In addition to Nardya’s work at The Loft, she is the owner and designer of NX-Nardcotix women’s footwear. She freely admits her first love is shoes but that creating furniture is much simpler. For the interview, I put on a pair of her shoes I purchased several years ago - MANA Breezie Spring Pink. They are timeless! Nardya still maintains an inventory of shoes available at The Marketplace. Over the years, I have watched Colleen’s offerings grow in complexity and beauty. She seems to have her finger on the pulse of furniture design, contemporary yet tasteful. I asked both Colleen and Nardya where they get their inspiration. How do they keep it fresh?

The dark haired beauty, Nardya, is of Spanish, Cuban, and Mexican heritage. She joined Second Life in 2007 and lives in Orlando, Florida. Creating

For inspiration, they both cited numerous external sources such as Pinterest, Houzz, Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Ballard Designs, among others. Colleen confessed to an obsession with collecting interior design books and magazines. To keep her look current, Colleen has worked with numerous creators and participated in scores of events and

challenges. This has helped to establish the brand and reputation of The Loft. Keeping it fresh is accomplished by keeping up with the technology as well as the design trends. Colleen and her designers have evolved from prims to sculpties, partial mesh and finally full mesh. In

2012, I noticed an explosion of mesh items being offered – the Logie Garden set, Origami Dining set, the Diem Daybed (named after her baby), and the Painted and Wooden chandeliers. In July, 2012, The Loft released The Wareham House complete with several newly designed furniture collections. There was the Wareham refrigerator, Wareham stove, Wareham side chairs and the Wareham hoodie (just kidding). This release was so popular, it was days before I could get onto The Loft sim to see for myself. The Loft has shown and sold its designs at Collabor88, FaMESHed, The Arcade, Spruce up Your Space, 50 Linden Friday, Zodiac, The Liaison Collaborative, The Deck, and The Season’s Hunt. They have participated in charitable campaigns such as the Typhoon Relief Benefit for Haiti, the Autism Hunt and the Project Donate for Unicef where 100% of the proceeds were donated to charity. The Loft participated in a Prim Perfect challenge to completely furnish a Meadowbrook home for under 117 Prims. The Loft offered five furnished rooms totaling 115 Prims – an amazing feat and a beautiful home decorating option for 2009. If you aren’t fa-

At the end of 2013, Colleen and Nardya sparked frenzy when they released the Roxy Sectional. It was exactly what the home furnishing buyer was looking for. A fresh and exciting collection of accent pillows was also released. I purchased the set in Gravel, Oatmeal and White. (That’s me playing it safe with neutrals.)

125 They haven’t slowed their pace in 2014. Colleen released a sample furniture set to members of the VIP group, Lofty Spaces and followed that up with a supernova collection for February’s Collabor88. This month, Nardya created an Easter themed collection for The Arcade.

Surely after years of creating furniture and design accents, Colleen and Nardya must have a favorite or signature piece. When I asked them, I was expecting a response like the Bailey Bed or the Morgan Slipper Chair, instead they both said their favorite piece is the one they are working on now. I accepted an invitation later to Nardya’s home at

After a wonderful afternoon, we parted as friends and lovers of fine furniture design. Later that evening, I scrolled through The Loft’s website. It was like taking a trip back through time - a time in which I was present and participating. I remembered many of the their creations, when they were new and when I was in a rush to drop hard earned Lindens so that my home would be the most up to date and stylish in Second Life. Some things never change.

Whitewashed wood, rustic planks, open space living and large airy window—the design concept that consumers have come to appreciate in Scarlet Creative’s build. There is an earthy peace to her designs. It makes you crave for green meadows and rolling hills, of running barefoot through damp morning grass, of digging up fresh and fertile dirt for garden beds and of drinking tea in the sunshine…. …and there was Charlotte Bartlett, walking through the airport with an opened Mac in her

hand, naming and uploading her item for Collabor88 with the airport’s poor Wifi. “Oh it’s always a mess - well me at least!” she said candidly as she recalled her dilemma. “The plan is never to go up to deadline - but there is a lot of work put into mesh - the baking alone can take a large chunk of computer time for the complex work on architecture, so it’s more intense.” As always, however, her work discipline means she

managed to put out her Collabor88 items on time. The March Collabor88 theme is all about getting back to business, and it seems that most of the home designers were focusing on the ‘working from home’ aspect of their SL reality. The Scarlet Creative work.live loft is made for living and working. I certainly could picture is as a photographer’s loft in the city. The upper platform is big enough to be decorated as a living space, while the lower area is spaciously designed and

could fit a photo studio and a gallery to boot. Combining home life and work life, I wonder if she was taking a leaf out of RL into SL. There is a unique aspect of Second Life that makes our virtual world a honeypot to the creative bees: the ability to make a living and have a great degree of freedom. You can work anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection, and you are creating things that matter to you while making a living. Not many can boast of such a life!

138 SCARLET CREATIVE “I am really keen that anything I do release is a reflection of my personality, heart and what I would love to share with people,” she stressed. “I always have a very definite emotion or thought that a home needs to reflect, so some days I don’t model, I simply sketch out the ideas I want to include.” Charlotte is clear about every piece she puts out. Accompanying each release is a blog post that provides back stories to the build. Another section of her website is dedicated to the music she listens to while working. “Creating something for me is giving part of myself to a piece of work. It’s about making it light, but with depth…and that you feel you can also touch. I pour a lot of that into the work as that’s what keeps me inspired. Pushing the next envelope.” Her Catching Comet house for February’s Collabor88 was a magnificent structure, with a domed roof and weather vane. A perfect house for amateur and professional astrologers alike, a lovely getaway from the city to the open skies of the country and with plenty of space to store your space gazing knick knacks.

director) did moon travel?” “I had this vision of doing a palate from the Moonrise Kingdom mixed with a Jules Verne style moon travel adventure,” she continued. They clearly had fun with it. “If we had more time I would love to have spent months on this, with a full sim! But alas, we didn’t have that, so essentially what came out the other event was amazing instruments of star mapping, listening to radio waves etc and a house to watch comets from!” Prior to this interview, I was ambivalent about interviewing the creative mind behind of one of the biggest brand in Second Life. I imagine her to be constantly busy, would have no time for me and perhaps will be aloof and intimidating. I admit I was worried. Instead, the person that is Charlotte Bartlett has been nothing but obliging, candid, easygoing and approachable. From this point on, added by her description of Catching Comet house, I cannot help but take the imaginative liberty of picturing this interview being conducted whilst lying down in the Observatory, gazing out at the night sky.

“I am really keen that anything I do release is a reflection of my personality, heart and what I would love to share with people,” On her blog post about the build, she reminisced about a night of stargazing at the beach. “It was one of those moments, where you breathe and know it always be a memory to look back on,” she wrote. “He (Augustkov) created a sky full of constellations so we could have light to find our way home”. It is the stuff of architectural imagination. “Augustkov (7 Emporium) and I started with a central theme, which I then totally went off the ranch from!” She said, paying credit to her collaboration partner.

She certainly put me at ease. Approachability is perhaps one of Charlotte’s stronger points, and has helped to ensure her longevity in the fickle world of virtual tastes. Businesses in Second Life come and go quicker than you can say ‘rezz’, because barriers to entry are almost non-existent and the cost of exit is extremely low. Competition is fierce and the free market principle works in a more brutal manner in Second Life. Ensuring the longevity, dominance and relevance of a brand are only part of the many challenges a Second Life creator face.

The Catching Comet house and the accompanying accessories by 7 Emporium was their answer to the question: “What if Wes Anderson (Hollywood

It says a lot about a successful creator who refused to take all the credit herself. “I personally have a lot of help, friends in Second Life who give input,

some amazing artistic bloggers/Flickr community input and my own blog/art group Scarletines,” she revealed. “I don’t consider myself doing this alone due to that level of input. I may press the final buttons or create the mesh, but it’s very much a collaborative effort.” Being part of the community, and being fair to her customers is highly important to her. “I have tried very hard to be fair on support and improved on my offerings over the years. I refund copy/ mod items, price reasonably, doesn’t charge for things like group membership,” she said “I think people come to appreciate fairness and it’s helped me retain customers and attract new ones through word of mouth. I can’t pretend to understand it all, but the community of Second Life has been very supportive and I owe them a lot.” “To me, I always cover to ensure I answer any customer support needs - my customers are what give me this opportunity so they are my number one priority as without them I couldn’t have this outlet of creative fun.” Such simple words, and yet I puffed in silent pride about being a customer. As I pictured myself measuring the distance of the stars with my thumb, while she obligingly answers my question, I came to realize something. There is an undeniable sense of peace about her. While I acknowledge this is the effect her products have on me, interviewing the person herself drove this point home. It has to do with everything about her

145 way of expressing herself. From the words that she chose to answer these question, her chosen palette, the photography style when doing her vendor ads, to the minimalist layout of her website and the choice of songs on her playlist. But how? Living two lives can be demanding. Successfully living two lives for nearly eight years and never in danger of irrelevancy, how does this not burn anyone out? Where is this sense of peace from? “Burnt out? Never,” she smiled, as she answered my question. “Second Life doesn’t stress me like that. I go with the flow and have grown up through the period. A few times during busy real life or family events, it (Second Life) has been less of a priority. I have no problem taking holiday time and switching off from any creative work, it’s healthy and I think probably due the fact I have done this for so long, I have evolved throughout, developed my approach and learnt from my mistakes…hopefully! But with mesh expanding our horizons, I am here to stay and enjoying every minute so far.” Just because her nature is peaceful, does not mean that she is not a hard worker. She is not about to rest on her laurels. “My designs evolve, and I am really trying hard to improve on my skill set”, she said. “I am also now more seasonal in style - so from the winter snow builds like the Trilby Dacha, through to more spring palates. This has helped on appeal as many enjoy restyling their spaces. A new version of Neva’s Captains House is shortly coming out in lighter textures for spring into summer.”

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

146 TITLE She wouldn’t even rest on her existing builds, constantly thinking of improvements. While she is looking forward to new designs, she revealed she does wish to re-work some of her older works. “I do have a hankering to take some of the more modernist style designs from the old collection and look to see what the future could hold with them in mesh,” she confirmed. “Baked textures being a key part to that.” The problem with interviewing a creator that is so approachable is that you are loath to cut it short. Is that sunlight I see, shyly peeking through the night clouds, subtly whispering to me, “perhaps you should cut this interview short and let Charlotte get back to work?” Oh, alright then. I suppose it is only right if I ask her how she managed to run a successful business for so long. “Community is key,” she stressed. “Having support from fellow creators, people who can trust for feedback, and those who have amazing ideas. I think that keeps things fresh, exciting and also when a bit stuck you can have somebody to turn to for help. I couldn’t do my work without these people.” I don’t really want to get up and pack up…I don’t want this interview to end… “I enjoy what I do hugely, and sometimes when I have faltered or needed help, it has been amazing to have somebody reach out a hand. I think I am very lucky as I always have somebody somewhere in the world for a virtual hug and chat which is amazing/and for which I am very grateful for.” In essence: to be fair and grateful to customers, to create what you believe in, to give credit where credit is due, to develop a sense of community and to enjoy what you are doing… I sighed contentedly, as I lie in the Catching Comet Observatory and wait for the morning rays to greet me. And I thought… I don’t feel I am wrong in supporting a brilliant star like this

174 THE BASILIQUE: BEHIND THE SCENES

BEHIND THE SCENES

The Basilique is a full sim set in a small onesquare town near the French-Italian border. Most days the Basilique is a place to enjoy intelligent conversation, relaxing at the club, soaking in the nude-only bathhouse with discerning adults, or even taking in a show at the sims theater. On the day I visited, I was met by Canary Beck, we shall call her Becky, and crabsticks Resident, known as Harvey, to discuss the theater and design aspect of their sim. The theater group is called The Basilique Performing Arts Company. They specialize in full theatrical productions designed from the ground up and offering a very unique experience in Second Life. The current play production is John Milton’s, Paradise Lost and is the story of Adam and Eve’s original sin done in 14 movements of Mozart’s Requiem. As I sit here writing, sipping my coffee, I’m reminded of the beautiful Sunday morning I spent with Harvey and Becky. That morning I was enjoying my morning coffee as usual, and spending some time learning all about this spectacular theater company and how they proceed step by step through producing one of their plays. Graciously, Becky and Harvey took me on a full tour of their set production beginning with the venue itself, a full Italian Basilica converted into a theater. In all its regalia, it is massive, and truly beautiful from stone to stained glass. I was shown that the

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

audience will be seated in the middle of the Basilica and experience the play as it unfolds all around them. As Becky calls to Harvey to bring up the first set, with a wave of his hand, a fully staged set appears to the left of the Basilica. Becky explains, “So the story of Paradise Lost begins with the expulsion of Satan from heaven. He was a top tier angel who rebelled against God, so God tosses him out and he lands here with these followers in the first scene, mainly introducing the characters Satan, and the three devils.” The set is a barren land, only rocks and mounds of earth. Here is where God begins to build Eden, the quintessential eternal spring. Becky continues, “He builds the moon, the trees, and then finally Eden in the middle. He then creates the animals and then finally, Adam. Harvey plays Adam and he enters in the third scene and meets the animals, but he’s lonely so God makes Eve from his side, Moi!” In the final scene we see the Son of God coming down to Eden where the set is decorated with flourishing plant and animal life, all carefully chosen to show off the most beautiful and realistic details in their imagery. Adam and Eve are all tied up in lust and realizing their nakedness they are ashamed and thrown out of Eden. The animals disappear, the foliage dies, and Eden turns again into a barren wasteland which completes acts one and two.

asilique

S; PARADISE LOST

In act three we are treated to a celestial delight with an intergalactic battle between good and evil! Becky describes, “The massive aerial battle up there (points up at the planets) will be a big battle involving nine avatars over about five minutes. You might notice that there are fewer planets than we know of, but that’s because in Milton’s time, they only knew of those up there.” The battle will be fought literally over the audience for maximum entertainment. Proceeding through the acts we see the sad and harsh life of Adam and Eve. The small hovel they live in, the squabbles and trials, all coming to the entrance of the Angel Michael, to show Adam visions of what is to come. They have designed sets for three visions, one of which is the story of Noah’s Ark, complete with an immense ship and animals! Becky describes, “So then what we see is Noah as he talks to God. God says to build an ark, get the animals, etc. Noah does and that’s one vision. We will be playing animals too! This whole set, everything will be on ground level when we’re ready. So what we’ll then do is when the flood hits, raise the water level up to the audience’s necks so they really feel in it!” We proceed through each scene; Becky and Harvey show me what can only be described as jaw dropping details of painstakingly designed sets. We discuss the acute eye to detail they use to pick out each item they use on the sets. Becky describes

175

Article: VeronicaLynn Parx Photography: Caitlin Tobias

how they design them, “We have a vision of what we need to tell the story and we source 99% of what we include in sets from Second Life creators; so we do a lot of shopping! Then we’ll modify lots of it. For example Noah’s ark is a Viking long ship stretched even bigger. Adam and Eve’s hovel is a shed from POST, and that rug in there is a Gorean Rug from Dutchie. Whatever fits the part as long as it’s high quality, we’ll use it. We’re hoping that if the production becomes very well known we’ll have more sponsorship support.” From a design perspective this production reaches far and wide through all challenges present in design, yet the Basilique Performing Arts Company strives for originality, beauty, and functionality in their efforts. Finally, as in true Second Life spirit, no event would be complete without a cause and The Basilique is no exception. Their chosen cause is the World Wildlife Fund where they have adopted a baby mountain gorilla in Rwanda named Iohoho. 50% of all proceeds from the play will be given to the WWF. The theater company has many great ways to advertise for anyone interested in sponsorship, such as syndicated blog post amongst many other benefits. Tickets are $1,000L available for advanced sale on marketplace or $1,500L at the door. For any information, please contact Canary Beck or crabsticks Resident in world.
