CEO’S NOTE
L OV E T O D E C O R AT E S L . C O M
A big hello! As this is my very first note to you all, I have had to think really hard about what to say here! It is extremely nerve wracking stepping into someone else’s shoes and in a situation such as this, you are always hoping that you do not mess anything up. When I was offered to take over the running of LTD, I could not believe it and neither did I want to. Just so you all know, Editorial Clarity has been an amazing mentor to me and he has helped me overcome so many obstacles in the Home and Garden world that I feel I am truly blessed to have met him in my Second Life ®. It is such an honor that he has entrusted me with his baby which is ‘Love to Decorate’. I have been with LTD right from the beginning, even before the first issue was out, and I remember when it was just a few of us and we all wanted the premier issue to be such a huge success. Well, our wishes worked because today LTD is amazing and it is going to continue to be a fabulous resource for the Home and Garden goers out there! We are so lucky to have such an amazing team to work with and we are extremely thankful to have people with the same vision as us on the team. They are truly passionate when it comes to Home and Garden designing and, of course, we have the amazing designers out there who day after day cater to the public need and keep our inventories full with goodies for our homes and exteriors. This is our seventh issue of LTD and what an exciting one! We hope you will enjoy what we have in store for you all, but most importantly we hope it will inspire you to make that dream home, outdoor area or simply a little piece of heaven just for you. To Edi - thank you for bringing LTD to life and thank you for all that you do and have done for us. With love,

AptB is a decor company that has made something of an impact in the Homes & Gardens world even though they’ve only been going for around three months. We interviewed designer FadeArcade Resident to find out how and why AptB is proving so popular. When we first saw an advert from AptB for the ‘Gatsby Set’ we were impressed with the texturing of the items, a vintage sofa and coffee table obviously inspired by the period in which the Great Gatsby was around being the 1920s Prohibition era. But it wasn’t just the fact that the set looked as if it were taken from real life, it was the witty way that the sofa was half suitcase, half sumptuous leather that caught our eye! AptB is not Fade’s first venture. He also makes beautiful clothing, texturally near perfect, and it’s this talent that he’s carried over into his furniture. We asked if texturing clothing had been extended into the furniture that AptB produces. He said, “Oh of course, making clothing holds a high bar when it comes to details. I knew when going into the home decor business that I’d have to hold that same quality.” We noticed that not only does AptB’s decor look phenomenal in Advanced Lighting Conditions but it is also evident when viewing in average Midday lighting that a lot of care has been taken in the textural qualities of the products. The Homes & Gardens sector of Second Life® is extremely popular at the moment and to be a good designer in it, one needs to stand out so we asked Fade what, in his opinion, made AptB stand out. “Apt B is pushing realism in-world, bringing materials, textures, and original designs to a field where there is a lot of repetitiveness. We have extremely high standards for any product we release in terms of textures and style, and it’s in our best interest that our buyers can also push the realism in their own homes with our products.” We noticed that there’s a bit of a debate going on at the moment over the repetitiveness of animations in furniture, generally. People are delighted with the quality and style of the various decor presented at say FaMESHed or Collabor88 but the animations placed in the furniture can be a bit samey. Fade gave us the other side of the debate and it was most thoughtful. “I do know how to animate, but animation - tipping my hat to the animators in Second Life® - is quite tedious and time consuming. I would love to add an additional flare to our furniture - but at this point in time, we do not. If there is ever a pose we think would fit perfect, you can expect that I’llmake what’s needed to best represent our product.” “I can confidently say that if Home Decor styled brands could have it their way - every animation would be made for each product. Though when you’re talking about 2-3 hours of work for one animation, if animating by hand and not using motion capture (which is extremely expense) - most would vote to use that time to making working on art and not interrupting a smooth product release workflow. When getting my degree, my college had a motion capture set up installed and the price was around 50,000 $ and this was for just the most basic equipment. A hefty price to pay for most.”

We asked Fade what he was studying in college. It turned out to be a BA in Game Art and Design so his work in Second Life is a direct representation of what he went to college for. We wondered if Fade knew about Second Life and its creative possibilities whilst at college. Hereplied, “I had always known about SL, but never introduced formally. When I was first told about it, as many do, I was hesitant. Once I gave it a go, I realized that this could be something that I can certainly do... in my pyjamas. Which I think is everyone’s dream.” Next, we asked about the pricing of home decor in Second Life as this was another big debate going on at the moment. Did Fade think it was fair that Breedables went for relatively large amounts of lindens when so much time and care went into producing furniture which could not ultimately be reflected in the price? He gave an excellent answer. “Pricing is directly connected to quality, supply vs. demand, and for some - how long it took them to make the product. Most customers would pay significantly more for a product they feel is high in quality and appeals to their style. If there is a high demand for the product and it’s seen as a high selling product - the increase of an additional textured “limited edition” may reap even more sales for an already popular product. Some designers feel that if an item took them multiple days and was complex for them to produce, they want to be compensated for their time by overpricing the product past what it’s really worth. Something that may take days for them can take someone else a couple of hours. In terms of other fields in SL, it’s nothing short of smart when it comes to less work for more money. If you can sell enough kitten boxes for 8K that you can pay your bills, then I believe you are making some pretty smart business decisions. Don’t hold it against me though if you see me selling breedable dogs, unicorns, or horses in the future!” Initially Fade used an unusual HUD for his products which we’d noticed as being that ‘little bit different’. It contained a facsimile of the piece which would rotate all around via a sliding button so that the texture possibilities could be seen before applying it to the product. Various direct links to Social Media could also be accessed from the HUD. “That is a custom HUD that I had made for my F.A.D. brand - I thought it would be a great HUD concept that I certainly hadn’t really seen before. I used it also for the beginning HUDs for Apt B but after a bit we realized it might be more user friendly to have a click HUD that opens when you click the furniture instead of having to go into your inventory. It’s all part of trying things out and changing things - bring them back - testing them out. The process of figuring out what works and what doesn’t when going into another field.” However, when we replied that we liked the custom HUD and that the rotation angle was unique and useful, Fade said that he could certainly work it into different pieces in the future. As ever, he’s adaptable and listens to what his customers want. Noticing that AptB’s ‘Arden set’ seemed to be inspired by the 1950s era of rounded shapes and metal legs (and incidentally the ‘Arden Chair’ has a generous 18 animations in it, AptB are not shy when it come to giving their customers good value) we asked if Fade had a favourite era of decor that he liked working from and did he get inspiration from real life furniture designers? “Before we opened officially, we made 4-5 different sets so we could give new customers a variety. We made a little bit of fantasy-esqe, a more modern approach, and something a bit more grungy and antique-esqe. My favourite would certainly be more dark, grungy, dare I say - risqué. The more style of cute, country farm home, small coffee shop run by the original owners is done well and, personally, flooded in this market. I think it’s time we give the more bold residents something to set their eyes on.” Of course we had to ask what he meant by ‘risqué’ furniture. “A piece much like our ‘Strandmon Couch’ that was released at TMD last month could be a more clear representation of furniture that would be great for more adult photoshoots or intimate conversations with a loved one. While at the same time, with a couple of texture changes - be a great piece for a rock band practice underneath a popular bar. As I set into what my customers want, the more original the designs will become.”

At this point, since Fade was talking about furniture for photoshoots, we mentioned that models find it hard to cope with average sized furniture and more often that not feet end up under floorboards or sticking out not so gracefully from the edge of the furniture. “The reason why it might be hard to find is that there is an average scale that furniture is made in to appeal to the general audience. It would be hard to place a chair that is made for larger avatars in a home of an average height avatar. It might look out of place, much like Shaquille O’Neal’s chair might look in my living room. Though like you were saying that might be an untapped market!” Indeed! And then we were onto the next debate that LTD had been having recently on the Facebook page – that of gacha. Were gacha less popular now? Our findings seemed to be that they were losing their appeal but then the March Arcade Gacha event came along and people were falling over themselves to get into the sim! No conclusive findings, then. We asked Fade what he thought of the whole gacha business. “Gachas take a long, long time to prepare. I give big thumbs up to those who do it well. I have some gachas in the works, but it’s yet to be seen if it will be worth the time and effort. Would it be better business wise to sell each product separately or to have people play for it? It’s always a gamble when it comes to success, and I’m a bettin’ man.” We laughed and asked one final question. What were AptB’s future plans? “We are hoping to get started on prefabs and skyboxes in the next month or so. I think it’ll be a challenge to try my hand at that!”s We reckoned that Fade would need a much bigger store of AptB soon. His answer was that he was working on it. So, lots to look forward to from this very pleasant and talented designer who takes the time to listen to his customers and provide what is fast becoming a most popular Homes & Gardens company.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... a young man called Editorial Clarity came up with one heck of an idea. Second Life® needed a quality Home & Garden publication. Why? The reason was simple. Edi believed that Second Life® residents had something in common, they all appreciated the beauty and creativity of this virtual platform and that the expression of those qualities could be represented by the homes and landscapes they placed in it. When Edi first came to Second Life® in 2009 he soon saw it could be a land of endless possibilities. He tried his hand at a number of things but always enjoyed decorating. He saw it as a therapeutic pastime which let go of stress as he was diverted into creating harmony around him through the virtual environment. He blogged Home Decor for a long time, getting to know the various content creators and their styles of prefabs, furniture and landscaping. Basically, their dreams made manifest virtually. Eventually, all this joyful experience inspired Edi to create the magazine ‘Love to Decorate’ and the first bi-monthly edition was published in Jan/Feb 2014. The magazine’s ethos was for the readers to have fun with decorating, to enjoy creating their own dreams and not to worry about what anyone else thought. As Edi coped with the challenges of running a large publication, he found that how he coped with them made all the difference between success and high stress levels! The first issue was produced from concept to release in just three weeks. It was Edi’s desire to not only showcase the big name brands in the Home & Garden world but also to provide a platform for the promising designers just starting out and bring them to the attention of potential customers.
In addition to Edi’s magazine work, he also hired himself out as a virtual interior designer and pleased many customers with his approach. It would be fair to say that his talent lay in creating a balance between stylish glamour and home comfort, one that his clientele appreciated so much that their homes became their sanctuaries. When questioned about where his inspiration came from, Edi said that it came from listening to music, flicking through a magazine, watching television or even appreciating a really nice piece of furniture. He suggested that folks look around for inspiration until they attained thedrive to create something they were truly happy and proud of. It would be their fantasy, their dream of perfection and what made them happy. Inspiring readers in this way was one of the goals of ‘Love to Decorate’ and that certainly has been achieved looking at the LTD Flickr with its wonderful pictures from readers who really are following their decorating and landscaping dreams. Looking back on his virtual life Edi has recalled both sad and great encounters which, with the help of other community members who became firm friends, made him the rounded personality that he has become. He met his real life husband, Rico, in Second Life® and even moved countries from the UK to the USA so we can say that being in our virtual world has had a profound effect on Edi’s life. Nowadays, Edi works behind the scenes so that he can enjoy the essence of Second Life® as a leisure pursuit, much as he did originally. He has come to understand that there is a fine balance to be struck between work and play which in itself engenders the space necessary for inspiration and consequently motivates the drive to create. So we take this moment in time to celebrate all that is Editorial Clarity and to continue to enjoy him as a friend, a pioneer, an organizer par excellence, a true talent and an inspiration!

Rococo is the term given to the decorative arts of the mid to late 18th century. Described as decadent, indulgent, and frivolous, it affected interior design, music, writing, and the theater. A departure from the preceding more formal Baroque style of Louis XIV, its furnishings and interior design is characterized by the shell motif, acanthus leaves, pastel colors, gold, and a lack of symmetry. Cherubs, flowers, ribbons and frills are abundantly found in china, sculpture and painting. The playful and sensuous nudes and allegorical paintings of Francois Boucher and the delicate genre scenes of Jean-Honore Fragonard give us a view into this period of lightheartedness and the excesses of the aristocracy. A Lady’s Boudoir was designed to represent a revival of this exuberant, sometimes naughty, and jolly style.

“What interests me in photography Second Life ® and in decoration is that anything is possible. We can give free reign to our imagination and the only limits are those you impose to yourself. Yes, everything is possible, like having a garden full of fairies who plant your flowers while you relax on your swing .. and so many many other things .. I’m a little dreamer so I try to share this in my photography. Also, I find that we have fantastic creators in Second Life ® very talented and who contribute to make us dream. This, my art, is my way to say I appreciate them and how they should continue to make dreams come true!” • Vanleen’s Flickr.

Like all the colour groups, each colour in life represents many things and how you will feel towards them. For me Teal soothes my mind, I feel calm when surrounded by the rich colours of the Teal. It may make your room vibrant but it will help make you feel the same by being close to those colours. Splashes of yellow, white and grey help pull the colours together, it helps make your room pop with the richness and creative expressions. You can get very creative with Teal, you just need to set your mind free and just express your imagination.
