PUBLISHERS NOTE Inspiration, such a wonderful thing. During my nearly five years in Second Life I have been constantly amazed by the people, the talent and the work here. I often get people messaging me in regards to my Interior Design work asking me where I get my inspiration from and will I go and decorate for them. And here is my answer to that.

Inspiration can come from many places, for me personally I get it through listening to music, flicking through a magazine, watching television or even just finding a piece of furniture I like. Here in Second Life, it is a place where we can create our ultimate fantasies, live the perfect dream life we may not be able to do in the real world, why have someone create that fantasy for you? You just need to look around until you find the inspiration that gives you the drive to create something you are truly happy and proud of. It does not matter if someone else doesn’t like it, it is YOUR fantasy, YOUR dream, created by YOU. The only thing that matters is that it makes YOU happy. At LTD, one of our goals from the very beginning with the magazine was for it to inspire the readers. Inspire to make Second Life an even more beautiful place than it already is and to shine the spotlight on those who are truly inspiring individuals. For example, we feature Eku Zhong of CULPRIT in this issue. A fabulous person with an amazing heart and extraordinary story as to why she is here and why she creates. She is inspiring. We have Stephan Visconti of ATELIER KRESLO and Alessandra Foxtrot of TARTE, two residents who, within the past year or so, have simply risen from nowhere through hard work and dedication. Again, truly inspiring people. This issue is also packed with great designs that will hopefully make you not only WANT to decorate, but to LOVE it too. And that is what we are all about. I thank you for your continued support in LTD. This is our third issue now and producing each one is as nerve wracking but exciting as the other. We are constantly growing and that is because of you. You have entrusted us to be the number one resource for home & garden design in Second Life which is what we set out to do. So thank you. I hope you enjoy reading this issue. The team put a lot of hard work into it as always and I hope you leave inspired. Always, LOVE to decorate!

Stephan Visconti: Behind the Scenes Article: Liat Reina Photographer: Nariko Okawa

Upon first landing in the Coraline sim, it’s just a short stroll down the gently curving stone paths to find quality and refinement nestled amongst a set of ruins. It’s a perfect reflection of a favored summer past time for long strolls out of doors with which the design of Atelier Visconti invites guests to wander and relax while shopping for fine mesh products. The vast open spaces surrounding the store blend beautifully with displays featuring the stunning creations of Stephan Visconti. Items such

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

as elegant fountains as well as complete living room sets await to delight the eye. It was a little over a year ago that Stephan Visconti received his first taste of Second Life®, and it came through an invitation courtesy of an existing friendship. “MissAllSunday Lemon introduced me to this world and I immediately fell in love with it.” It didn’t take him long to find his niche on the grid either and he joined the ranks of content creators

just like his guide. “I’ve been working for quite some time in a render studio and even if I liked the job I couldn’t express myself the way I would’ve wanted to because, of course, there were guidelines and specifications to follow. So I decided to join Second Life and start creating for myself, following my tastes and making everything that I couldn’t make before.” So Atelier Visconti was created as a way to share his unique vision with us all while providing him a much desired outlet. Even the name chosen for his brand expresses that vision as he explains best in his own words. “I think I have a very European style, so I looked for a name that could convey this feeling. Also the word ‘atelier’ was used initially to describe painters’ workshops and then later it was linked to other expressions of art like fashion, design, and so on... I did not want to link my store name to furniture only, but I wanted to be free to expand also in other directions.” It only takes a glance around his current collections to get a sense of how exciting it will be to watch his store grow and expand. Over the past year, he’s felt a well justified sense of pride in the creations he’s completed and shared with the grid. Taking part in several of the most prestigious shopping events, the Atelier Visconti brand has gained both notice and acclaim from consumers eager to acquire high quality mesh décor. Events such as The Liaison Collaborative, The Cookie Jar, and L’accessories are just a few of

the venues in which his wares have been displayed. Where does the impetus for all of his wonderful products come from? “Usually it starts from a random inspiration then I would make a couple of sketches to see where the idea takes me until the project starts to get some form. That’s pretty much what happens. As I said before, my inspiration comes from Europe. From ancient times (think Roman or Greek), through the middle ages, the

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

baroque and Victorian age to the modern Mediterranean styles.” The more Grecian influences are easy to see in the grand and artfully distressed columns or aged walls which make up the ruins structure of the main store itself. There is also an ancient and timeless feel that is present in the graceful arches of the Aurora pavilion and the captivating curves of the

29

Aurora Fountain. With just a stroll, we can travel effortlessly all the way to the more baroque styles of the Vanessa lounge set with its opulent color change options and lavish cushions and carpet. Finally, it only takes a walk up the stairs to view the starker and modern feel of the Chroma dining collection. All of these and more are expressions of both his favorite and least favorite parts about his work in world. “The freedom to express whatever

passes through my mind, although strict deadlines and SL limits sometimes take the fun out of it.” Its no surprise that he decided to create his own line of quality mesh designs given some of his passions which exist both online and in real life as well and centers around a perfect blend of creativity and expression. “I’ve always been attracted to art and architecture. By the time I discovered digital

art I nerdly fell in love with it :)” A love we can all be grateful for to be sure and one which continues to translate into items that inspire others. When asked what upcoming projects he’s most excited about, he had the following to share. “I’m working with my friends MissAllSunday Lemon and Rouge Darcy of Wasabi Pills on the new sim that will host our stores, it’s not as easy as I thought it would be nor as fast, but I’m really looking forward to its completion.” As this ambling summer stroll comes to a close, its simple to see why the designs of Atelier Visconti are captivating residents across the grid. It might be the almost Venetian feel of the Fountain Tria with its clever arched paths fit for any garden or urban landscape which catches your eye. Or perhaps the Stienne Set perfect for a warm evening with its thin curtained gazebo and wicker seating will grace your patio. Then again it might be the Mont Blanc Set with its quaint country charming fire place and large wooden rocking chairs that will perfectly compliment your home. Or maybe you simply have to see what Stephan Visconti will create with the collaborative sim project. Whatever your reasons, this summer season won’t be complete without a trip or two to the Coraline sim to appreciate Atelier Visconti.

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

84 CULPRIT Way back in September of 2007, a talented ceramic artist became unable to work at her craft due to progressive multiple sclerosis. One evening her brotherin-law came to dinner and reported that he’d seen a television programme about Second Life. The artist was immediately entranced and so was her husband! Within a month, eku Zhong and yure4u Sosa had purchased a region and set about making things on it. Eku learned Zbrush, a graphics program by Pixologic, and began to make full perm shoes kits – shoes being one of her loves. She enjoyed working with sculpts and likened the 3D texturing required to working with glaze on a pot, a texture in

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

the round. She describes herself as having ‘worker ant genes’ and her work rate is certainly prodigious. The Zbrush program was paid for within a week on the profits of eku’s kits and by March 2008 profits were being regularly cashed out. Nowadays, eku and yure4u both work full time in Second Life. As the years went on eku became more housebound, Second Life served both as her studio and her window on the world. At first she told no-one that she was disabled because of the freedom that came with keeping that secret but when she needed surgery on her skull, the cat was pretty much out of

85 the bag! If people told her to rest, she ignored them, and still does. She started to experiment with low prim furniture and soon there was enough pieces to open what she describes humorously as, “A cheap and nasty store that sort of didn’t have a name”. Of course furniture needs animations and yure4u described to me how he started making those when he was offered a static pose for L$4000 that was not particularly static! He started watching tutorials and made his first animation on the day he refused to purchase the dubious pose. Recalling that time, eku says, “I think Yure has an innate talent for

animations. He notices small details that make them unique. I just made bum scratching animations and gave them up!” Also, he’d had prior experience in making animations for websites so the process was familiar to him. I asked how Culprit evolved from the low prim furniture store. It was all due to the introduction of Mesh into Second Life. Both eku and yure4u admitted that they struggled initially, but with the purchase of a new program, Modo, things improved at a rapid rate. They joined forces with another Sec-

87 ond Life designer called Lord Humphrey, affectionately known as Humps. He is also a multiple sclerosis sufferer, unfortunately at a later stage, and he had a store called Fab Pads at the time which had become too much for him. Eku continues, “So I forced him to come and be a sometime participant in Culprit. I am a little bossy,” she adds as we laugh. Of course, they all became the best of friends and collaborated on many of the first meshes, the ‘Zen Tea Pavilion’ with its intricate details and loving attention to detail, being one of them. Humps rarely models nowadays but it’s good to see his work incorporated into Culprit’s items. It’s always a joy to wander around the Culprit store. Also, it’s quite hard not to spend those lindens! The atmosphere is light, fun and always intriguing with plenty to see and decor inspiration a-plenty. There are unique houses and garden follies that follow eku’s love of small structures that she can cram detail into and still keep the land impact low. She particularly enjoys making textures that describe the flow of time in a house - worn but cared for wood, cracked but sparkling tiling, an old mosaic floor, a painting on a ceiling a bit faded with age, furniture with years of polish rubbed into it. I walked into ‘Dragonfly Cottage’, a pleasing combination of round windows, wooden promenades and square rooms, and was amused to find that it appeared much bigger on the inside. It was inspired by a picture of the front of a cottage showing only the veranda, eku built the rest of it out of her imagination and she says that it may well have some sneaky Tardis genes in it. As one walks around the store, there are areas of themed furniture to enjoy, various wall fountains and antique greenhouses to peruse, an elegant Victorian orangery, plants of all varieties lined up on shelves, garden swings, exquisitely detailed Japanese ornaments for home and garden. Then one rounds a corner and quite unexpectedly meets... all sorts of animated rides! These are the mechanical rides warmly remembered from childhood, the ones that adults still wish they could fit into as they shove in coins for their own kids. At the Culprit store adults can achieve those longings. There are romantic rocking horse couple rides, and playful zebras and dolphins perched precariously on engines. Pandas, bears and elephants

on springs poised to bounce uncontrollably, brightly coloured rockets to ride to the moon and back. Visitors have no time to be embarrassed, they just click and ride! When I asked about Culprit’s future plans, yure4u said that there would definitely be more rides. Eku added that there’d be more buildings but never the ordinary, and maybe even something entirely different because it was all an adventure. They both agreed that the only limit was their imagination. I felt they had a wonderful childlike enthusiasm which was catching. Looking back over the Culprit store which is simply packed with wonderful items, I asked eku if she had a favourite piece of furniture. I’d been sitting in a well worn comfortable leather chair during our interview and she pointed to that, the ‘Culprit Leather Wingback Chair’. What a coincidence but it was true! Eku had seen a picture of this chair but had never been able to purchase it in real life. Now it was reproduced faithfully in Second Life in all its slouchy glory and animated to perfection. “Yes, posh furniture is good and well but if you can’t have a good slumphhhh, what is the use,” says eku, smiling, and I had to agree.

Before I left, I was treated to a walk around the newest Culprit offering, the ‘Wayfarer’s Rest Lighthouse’. A very enchanting house that I’m sure lots of people will love. It is a delightfully intricate house with an amazing tower in the shape of a lighthouse attached to one side. The lighthouse has an animated platform that will take up to eleven individuals, all in different poses. As I peered over the guard rail, my arms resting on the metal, I reckoned it would be very easy to write a humorous sketch about eleven people stranded on a lighthouse from the animations alone. To get back into the main part of the house, there’s an animated ladder in which one slides down like a sailor entering a submarine. Extremely amusing and shows off yure4u’s talent in the best possible manner. In fact, all the houses are enhanced by yure4u’s animations in some way or another and it’s that special combination of fun and intricacy that makes Culprit pieces so charming. In conclusion, and after a wonderful afternoon’s visit, I would thoroughly recommend the Culprit store. It’s entertaining shopping at its very best!

100 TARTE

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

101 Cozy, colourful and slightly shabby chic, tarte is not a store that you can just ‘grab and go’. Situated in a lovely ‘village’ like sim at Scribbled Hearts, the store is housed in a large warm and cozy cottage. It’s a familiar and happy place. I am in this store several times a month and yet I still find the need to walk around and browse. There is this feeling of ‘sit down and read a book’ with it. It’s hard not to feel so comfortable here, and you would have to fight the urge to take a nap or two. If this was Real Life, tarte is that quaint shop in a small town where you grab a Sunday breakfast with the family while browsing the products…and then buy the same furniture to imitate that atmosphere in your own home. Tarte’s item deliberately looks ‘imperfect’, which to me makes it perfect. The items are ‘worn’. They sometimes looked repurposed, repainted over and over again, scuffed wood, faded colours that once were bright in their newness with obvious signs of being well-used. This is what Alessandra Foxtrot of tarte wished to achieve in her creations, a feeling of warmth and coziness. “SLiving to me is the warmth and coziness of making a space your own with unlimited flexibility, without the hassle of having to clean up or exert a ton of effort to change things up. I

102 TARTE love the feeling of a well-decorated space and how it can evoke the feeling of life having just left the room. I like to see things worn, in midst of being used, or scattered about.” A little bit of lived-in Southwestern in Second Life then? “I’d probably have a cow if my Real Life spaces were decorated the way I decorate my Virtual spaces, but that’s the beauty of Second Life.” Oh okay…amen for Second Life, in this case! How often have you wished you could mesh something that you envisioned in your imagination? If you are prone to envy, I suggest you do not read any further. Alessandra started meshing as a way to fulfil her wants. Most of her early inspiration came from décor items she wanted, but couldn’t find In World. So, armed with Blender and countless hours of online tutorials, it took her less than a year to start meshing intricate items. “Honestly, it was a lot of tutorial watching, prodding friends for help, and trial and error,” she stressed. “I learn best by experimenting and doing things on my own, but I was lucky to have some amazing people guide me.” “There’s definitely a learning curve to mesh, mostly because there’s not a ton of resources related to meshing for Second Life purposes. But once you learn the basics, you can navigate your way around a little easier,” she encouraged. “To be honest, I’m still learning. Just last night I used a new technique for an upcoming project.” “It’s a process, not a destination.” Second Life photographers give away something about themselves with every picture they stage. Alessandra’s blog, something catchy, includes both fashion and homestuff blogging. “Before I started meshing, I spent my days in Second Life decorating and blogging homestuff. I’ve always had a passion for decorating and it just seemed like a natural progression into meshing home & decor.” Her home stylings always include clutter and plenty of sunlight, so it is only natural that she will bring this over to her creation.

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

103 “I wanted to make things that added warmth and coziness to a space. I love knick knacks and small rooms that can be cluttered,” she said. “I also love lights (again, look around tarte), so you’ll see a lot of that in my work.” Alessandra: real life person and Second Life avatar, fashion blogger, home blogger and now content creator. Perhaps she is also part-robot. “It’s definitely a challenge!” Alessandra confided. The first challenge is to split time between working a day job in Real Life, and then working in Second Life. “Luckily, my RL work schedule is semi flexible, which makes things a little more manageable in online.” Alessandra started creating under the collaborative brand ‘encore’. After a few months, she was ready to strike out and began the daunting process of taking on her own store. “I was exhilarated and scared and excited and motivated and did I mention scared?” she reminisced. Word association time: what comes to your mind when you see the word ‘tarte’? To me, it sounds like a sweet yellow French eggy pastry. “I love the color yellow,” Alessandra explained. “I veered towards words like lemon and sour and I eventually landed on tart. I added an ‘e’ to look worldly,” she added half-jokingly. “I added an ‘e’ because the word “tart” means different things in different parts of the world.” In a creative world as ours, it is hard to not constantly be creatively stimulated and I wonder if content creators feel like they’re on the job 24/7. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ll see something and think “I want to make this in Second Life!” It’s definitely stimulation overload, but it’s also cool to see your skills in application. Sometimes I’ll literally think about what geometric shapes I could use to mimic an item or object.” “Nerd game 2strong.” Her words, not mine! As a workaholic, Alessandra prefers to call SL-work something different: “creative indulgence”.

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

104 TARTE

LOVETODECORATESL.COM

105

“It’s a creative indulgence in and of itself. For me, personally, I can spend hours working and not even realize how much time has passed. I truly enjoy 3D design and content creation and while it’s something that requires a lot of time and patience, it’s also something I love doing.” Recreation: is there ever word in a workaholic content creator’s vocabulary? “Sometimes I have a serious problem knowing when to take a break, but I also try to give myself time off here and there. For example, I just finished working on the quaint cottage, and I’ve vowed not to open blender for the remainder of the weekend. That’s a break, right?” Less than a year with meshing and tarte have already released three houses: The Quaint Cottage, The Tuscan Villa and The Small Bungalow. It seems like a huge leap for one that has only been meshing for less than a year. Her reason was simple: “I’ve always wanted to try

106 TARTE

107 making houses”. Well, what other reasons do you need? Not someone to shy away from a challenge: if she wants to make it, she is damn well going to make it and there’s nothing you can do about it. “I honestly never thought I’d see the day where I was making mesh builds, but it was always on my to-do list and I’m glad I was able to deliver.” “Making houses is much more time consuming and tear-filled than my usual furniture and decor items. I think my biggest challenge was figuring out the custom physics and creating detail while keeping LI down.” To know that you can build houses in less than a year of meshing if you set your mind to it is definitely encouraging. Tarte is a young brand, what will be the foreseeable future? “tarte will definitely stay in the home goods realm for the foreseeable future. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes, and I’m not closing any doors. I really enjoy 3D modeling, so it’s a field in which I’d like to continue working.” “The best part about meshing is the final product and seeing people enjoy the stuff you’ve brought to SL. That will always be cool to me!” It took her less than a year to start meshing houses, so what other challenges is Alessandra looking forward to overcome? “Someday I’d like to try my hand at SLink shoes, but that’s partially to feed my shoe addiction.” Ha. A girl who wears many hats can never have too many shoes.
