Time to brighten up your homes! Dear Readers, Welcome to this issue which is jam packed full of amazing scenes created by our stylists and photographers! It is always a great feeling when you see everyone working together as a team and helping each other. The one thing I am extremely proud of at LTD is that we always work with each other and try to bring the best of the best to each issue. This issue is no exception, our team has outdone themselves again and I am sure all of you are going to be inspired by what is to come when flicking through these pages. Even I keep drooling over the stunning scenes the team has provided. We are now coming into our Summer season and although it is not my most favourite time of year, it is still the season for bright and bold colours. We have a stunning colour in use for our â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Living in Technicolourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; section which has inspired me to redo my home in this bright colour pallet mixed with neutral tones. So, a lot of exciting features this issue, but I am not going to say anymore because I do not want to spoil the surprises as you look through the magazine. Just sit back and enjoy! With love,

We all need a place to call home... LTD is a wonderful organization full of creative virtual decorators and artists who, in a united fashion, show their love for Second Life ® through designing spaces. Each time a stylist from this group creates a set, it’s as if they are sharing with you a little piece of what makes them human – a peek into central core of what we define as our home. Even though I have a home in my first life, I’ve found that having a home in Second Life® is just as important. It’s a place that you can call your own and to do as you please. And, those tiny spaces we decorate with intangible objects and pieces still hold an emotional value that we connect with. They hold a value and a trust that we define ourselves with. LTD has been a wonderful home for me for the past 6 months. I’ve learned about myself, about leadership styles, about communicating with people. I’ve had some fun! After this issue, I am resigning as Editor in Chief. Important events in my life have way of changing my priorities for my second life. I am thankful to Editorial Clarity for the opportunity to work with his team and he has been a pleasure to work with as well. I thank Elvi for her cooperation on projects and I wish her the best of luck running the organization. She’s doing an amazing job. I’ll still be around in the background doing quiet things and making a home in SL once again. For this issue we explore bathroom vanities, bedrooms, and the color for spring “Coral Reef.” We welcome Zerkalo as our featured designer! Their realistic, lived-in designs are one of a kind. And, we’ve invited the very talented Kimbra Iridescent to be our featured blogger. We’ve created another wonderful and captivating issue for you, and I can’t wait to share it with you. I thank you all for your support, for your ideas, and for your love.

[ zerkalo ] arrived on the Second Life® Home & Garden scene quite recently and has enjoyed rather a meteoric rise to fame. Run by Anaïs Terpellie and Daniel Estro, [ zerkalo ] has quickly established itself as a store which produces consistently high quality furniture and decor. We met up at the LTD office for an enjoyable evening’s chat. Although Daniel does not speak English, Anaïs studied in an English oriented school from the age of four and as a consequence has always been interested in other countries arts and culture. [ zerkalo ] is an unusual name to the western ear but in Russian it means ‘mirror’. It is taken from one of Anaïs’s favourite book series, ‘Labyrinth of Reflections’ by science fiction writer Sergey Lukyanenko, and is about virtual reality. Anaïs says, “In his books, Sergey compares virtual reality with a Mirror (or [ zerkalo ]) saying that while we can recreate something already existing or create something new and unusual in the virtual reality - it is still a reflection of our real life feelings and impressions. Daniel knows I love the books and the idea, so he suggested to name our store [ zerkalo ].” A very pertinent observation since a lot of [ zerkalo ]’s work is inspired by Anaïs and Daniel’s home city of Moscow and its history. For instance, the stunning Gzhel tea set which was part of the recent ‘Moscow Nights’ gacha, was similar to a set owned by Anaïs’s grandparents. At this point we laughed because Russia is a multicultural country and it not easy to see who influenced whom - the Samovar (the Rare in that set) has Turkish design origins. Anaïs’s grandparents are avid book collectors with over five thousand plus novels in their apartment. [ zerkalo ]’s ‘My Father’s Shiny Shabby Treasures’ gacha is based on items found around the family home so of course it had to include books. The Rare in that set is a huge pile of books with a mug balanced precariously on the top which has the Moscow state university photo imprinted on it. Back in real life, Anaïs drinks from her version of that mug every day. So, definitely a reflection of real life impressions! How do Anaïs and Daniel divide the work of [ zerkalo ] up? Well, at the moment most of the mesh is made by Daniel who uses several programs but the main one is 3DS Max. Anaïs manages the store and also her Shiny Shabby Event; she answers the many IMs and finds suitable animations, and works out textures in Photoshop. This takes up all her time. The rate of product turnover for [ zerkalo ] is prodigious so we asked if Anaïs and Daniel ever left the building platform. “If we do not sleep... we work. Literally - all the time. We are now on vacations... and we don’t go anywhere - just work :P” Anaïs added, “We are very happy that people like our items. That means a lot to us! At the same time we see that there are many things we still don’t know and need to study so there’s no time to relax. Yes, work is now on the first place for us, there are so many amazing designers around, we need to work a lot to achieve their level.” When Anaïs first began Second Life®, she adored all sorts of role-play and was stunned at the splendour of the fantasy sim Mystara and many of the Gorean sims that were more adult based but no less beautifully designed. She and Daniel observe that nowadays almost 80% of role-players are Goreans so if they make items for the ‘We <3 Role-Play’ Event, then the animations will cater to that need. Often Anaïs will spend days searching for specific animations for this furniture. Such attention to detail is much appreciated by [ zerkalo ]’s customers. A recent piece has been the ‘Persian Rugs’ with glowing fire bowls and wood stack. Just perfect for role-play situations in both PG and Adult variations, the rugs and piles of matching sumptuous cushions look as if they have come straight out of real life, the texturing is that acutely observed.

The only concession to relaxation that these two hard working folks make is to have parties most Saturdays at the Shiny Shabby club - Black Milk. Here’s a recent programme. It’s best to keep an eye on this stream - run by Anaïs’s good friend, Neva Crystall - as the times can be a bit random but there is an open invitation for anyone to come along and enjoy the party. We learned that Neva Crystall (which is the name of a river in St Petersburg where Neva lives) and her daughter Blair are great friends with Anaïs in real life and that they helped Anaïs in her quest to learn Photoshop thoroughly which she has been doing for the last five years. The Shiny Shabby sim was designed on a vintage theme by Neva and invigorated Anaïs’s fascination with grunge. Anaïs recalls the time when Blair, a real life artist who now lives in the US, was sitting with her one day in a cafe in Moscow. She painted a portrait in several minutes whilst they were waiting for coffee. With such teachers as Neva and Blair, it’s no wonder that Anaïs is now a talented Photoshop user whose adeptness at textural art is reflected in the [ zerkalo ] pieces. She also says that as she started off by blogging, she was used to the flow of light and shade necessary to make a picture (and now texture) interesting and vibrant. [ zerkalo ]’s quality of textural design can be seen best in computers that can use the Advanced Lighting Model as Materials are always used in the products. But as Lights and Shadows are baked into the textures on each piece, they can also be appreciated on computers with lower graphic capabilities making [ zerkalo ] a versatile furniture producer. Needless to say [ zerkalo ]’s Inworld group is growing and each month they generously give more group gifts out. Recent gifts have been a Bohemian styled open wicker basket with flowing striped blanket tumbling out, and a beautiful china coffee cup and chocolate set ready for that mid morning break. [ zerkalo ] can be seen at quite a few Events – We <3 to Role-Play, Shiny Shabby, On-9, Cosmopolitan, 6º Republic and the Gacha Garden Event. They are also at the 2015 edition of The Home Show with the ‘Linen Bed, Tables and Accessories’. At LTD, we were both flattered and amused as one of those accessories was a pile of magazines emblazoned with past LTD magazine covers! Linen bean bags were also much in evidence, beautifully textured in cream and chocolate and draped with striped, fringed blankets for more than a touch of luxury. Anaïs and Daniel do find that Events give them inspiration, though, as well as a useful time schedule. Anaïs says, “Events make you plan your time and work using a schedule. Most important - they give ideas and inspiration. Almost every event has a theme and a mood board - and that really helps a lot. For me opening a mood board is... like opening a Christmas gift. You still don’t know what is inside, but you already feel excited.” Finally we asked Anaïs and Daniel about their future plans for [ zerkalo ]. Were they looking forward to Second Life® 2 when it came along and where everything would be designer oriented and Mesh based? “We are very excited about Second Life® 2 and truly look forward to try it out. We hope it will give designers a possibility to use all the power of the modern 3D programs. Both me and Daniel are gamers (or at least were until now - [ zerkalo ] doesn’t leave us much free time for playing games) and that could be fabulous if Second Life® 2 could look like the modern games - Mass Effect, Dragon Age Inquisition, etcetera. So yes, we can’t wait to try Second Life® 2. However we plan to run [ zerkalo ] in both Second Life® and Second Life® 2 of course.” And with that they were back to their building platform where Daniel had some new 3DS Max videos to show Anaïs. Work as usual for these two very likeable folks!

The Modern F of India...

Face The space created for our 100 years of decorating is inspired by the colorful culture of India. The wide open spaces are adorned with elements of India while remaining fresh, current and modern. One design element I used was the displays of elephants throughout each room. The elephant is a revered animal being one of the “Navratnas” (nine Jewels) according to Indian mythology making this animal respected and coveted. India has such a rich history and because of this the ways to display its influence in any space is limitless! For this issue I really wanted to try something different and when I was asked by a male client to decorate his home, I thought it was the perfect opportunity. You may have noticed that my styling is usually more traditional and on the feminine side, but I love a challenge. The client had mentioned that he loved the outdoors and wanted to keep his home 'manly' while still maintaining a 'cozy' feel. He had chosen the cabin in the forest home By Scarlet Creative which contains many big windows, so I decided to do a styling that would give the organic feel of bringing the outdoors in. I have to admit that most of my clients are usually female or couples, so I went into this having no idea how hard it really is to find decor items that are suitable for a male. It was definitely a challenge, but I think it's good to sometimes reach out of your comfort zone and try something new. STEP ONE

Begin with a story. Today's theme is "leisure time." I chose Thistle's new Tray Table to use as the foundation of my design.

STEP TWO

Look for decorative items that are modifiable, allowing you to do some creating of your own. I used Hanaya's beautiful tulips and Apple Fall's milk jug to design a new floral arrangement; carefully using rotation, move, and stretch to place each tulip in the vase STEP THREE

Next, locate and move additional items into place. Pay attention to color, size, and proportion. You may discover you need to modify a piece or two to make it look just right. I placed books, candlesticks, a trinket box and pets on and under the coffee table to build my vignette.

STEP FOUR

A tic-tac-toe game and chess pieces complete my theme and give the impression that this is a place where one can enjoy their leisure time.

STEP FIVE

Finally, always add a bit of whimsy. Leaving tulips on the table gives the story "life" and allows the viewer to imagine that someone has just stepped out of the room momentarily and will return shortly to finish the floral arrangement.
