ince our May/June 2014 Issue, we have done a lot of much needed team restructuring and I am happy to say that we are in a great place right now.
This issue we welcome our brand new Editor In Chief - Absinthe Montenegro. Absi was brought in to the LTD team not only for her experience at producing quality publications and editorial content, but because of her love for Home & Garden. When I started Love To Decorate back in December 2013, the most important thing for me when hiring new staff members was that they have a love and interest for Home & Garden. The number of accolades or likes on Flickr & Facebook did not and do not interest me. All we ask first and foremost is that you have a love, an admiration and a passion for the Home Decor market in Second Life. The rest is just a bonus. I am delighted to have Absinthe with us on our journey as each issue we grow as a publication and each day we grow as a company. I am also happy to welcome Jett Aldrin, our new Chief of Layout. Jett has some fantastic work in his resume and when finding a new graphic artist for our publication it was important that we trusted them to deliver the quality we and our readers expect from us. As a team we have faith and confidence in Jett to make LTD an even better visual pleasure for you all. Some great new stylists have also joined our team and by the time our November/ December 2014 issue is released, a whole new crew of photographers will be with us as LTD continues to expand and work to bring you the best in Home & Gardens in Second Life. A lot of work has gone into this issue and as a team we hope that you enjoy reading it. Inspiration is one thing we aim to give you and if you finish this book with a urge to decorate, that means we have done our job. You will notice a lot more decor in this issue than in the past and this is something we are going to continue. Enjoy, be inspired and most importantly...Love to Decorate.

reetings! I am overly joyed and excited to be a part of the Love To Decorate (LTD) team and so very excited to present our Sept/October ‘14 issue. When Editorial contacted me and asked if I would accept the position as Editor of this draw dropping, and gorgeous publication, I was honored and also very shocked. From its very beginnings, LTD has increased the standard for quality and innovation regarding publications in Second Life ®. The staff is some of the most motivated, creative, and experienced that I’ve met. Being the closet decorator that I am, I never dreamed that I would get the opportunity to work with this brilliant group of individuals. I thank Editorial Clarity for inviting me to his publication and also for his encouragement. I also thank the LTD staff for their patience and enthusiasm as we kick off another great issue. Seasons are changing from our vibrant, heated colors of Summer to the warm, burnt tones of Autumn. This issue is filled with décor that inspires this slow transition as we prepare for our cold, winter months. I am so happy to have Johnny Hardstone of JoHaDez as our featured designer. We also have quite few new columns to share with you! From focusing on kitchens to camp sites, our LTD stylists have shared their intimate moments through decorating and our photographers have set the mood by giving us a peek of our virtual world through their lenses. We welcome Mr. Godard for our blogger spotlight. This issue is full of new surprises, a new design, and a few new faces. But, one thing will always remain constant. We love to decorate. I look forward to working with Editorial Clarity and the LTD staff on many issues to come! With warm regards,
Absinthe

‘To capture a moment in time’ is what furniture designer Johnny Hardstone of JoHaDez endeavours to do with every piece he creates.

ike a true perfectionist he’s never entirely satisfied with his work, always seeking to push the boundaries of what is possible. He says wistfully that he still has so much to learn and feels like a beginner. In fact, when asked which is his favourite piece of work, he replies that he can’t decide because every piece is a considered thing and in some ways separate in his mind. He doesn’t believe that there is ever a theme in his work although friends would tell him different. In spite of all that, it is possible to detect a love of fine detail and a desire to bring textural reality to a virtual world. Johnny started making furniture way back in May 2011 and it was a secondary aspiration for him, since he wanted to build houses originally but found them far too complicated. Before that he spent several years exploring the Grid and admiring the work of builders and creators which was a great inspiration for him.
Johnny became successful with his furniture style that revolved around his love of textures. At the time he was using sculpts combined in new ways. One of his furnished living rooms was part of the SL Designer Remix Act 11 2011 when his major inspiration, Pitsch Parx of Urbanized, invited him to furnish a 1.2 Studio House in ‘warm colours’. After that, Johnny had a six months break from Second Life but was drawn back because he missed the expression of creativity his building brought to him. When he started to build new furniture and open a new store he remembered something amusing that had been said about him previously, namely that he was a ‘furniture poet’. It was rather apt and suited his ethos well, so he under titled JoHaDez with ‘poetic furniture’. When Mesh came into Second Life, it was with great delight that Johnny started to learn

JoHaDez Blender. At last he could actually produce the prims straight from his imagination rather than having to find good full perm sculpts to combine creatively. Three months ago, he began a retraining as a media designer and is presently learning 3DS Max. In real life he was previously more interested in music, being a sound designer for many years. He played instruments and produced music in his home studio. So Second Life with all its creative possibilities has, in terms of graphic design, influenced Johnny’s life in a completely new way. His course is teaching him a lot more about the use of colour theory in design and he is gaining experience in technical programs such as Illustrator. He says, “I will use this time and the things I learn to make even more beautiful things for Second Life”. A rather endearing and amusing co-incidence in Johnny’s life is that his Grandfather was a well known cabinet maker in Berlin and he worked until he was 86. Johnny remembers the workshop well as he had an internship there while he was still at school. He hated all the dust and dirt but he loved the smell of the newly cut wood! Inspiration comes to Johnny from textures rather than shapes. He will see a texture in real life and then wonder how that will translate to Second Life and what shape of prim might suit it best. There is a progression of style and technique when one views his work historically to the present day but the texturing is always as accurate to real life as virtual constraints allow. For instance, his leather looks like real life leather with all of the three dimensional form, so that one can easily imagine sinking down into the cushions of a sofa. The linens have that natural appearance, slightly knobbly and rough, the metals look shiny and cool and the wood truly resembles wood in all its states from polished new through to faded and aged. But it’s not
28

just textures that he is skilled at; it’s also in his gift for producing furniture shapes that mimic real life. Not all cushions are perfectly plump and uniformly shaped, not all bed duvets are neat and evenly distributed. And a customer certainly gets a lot of furniture for her/his lindens! Johnny’s furniture is always enhanced by texture scripting and packed with animations. In 2012, JoHaDez produced the “Rustic White” line of furniture. This was
a set based on the idea of rustic shabby chic, the sort of furniture that maintained an air of comfort. Extra textures of wood were built in – clear wood, painted wood and dirty and shabby wood. It became a principle of Johnny’s to give his customers choice, to let the furniture match their homes rather than make their homes match his furniture. The “Coloured” collection took that premise to heart as all pieces introduced sections of colour, such as the side of a table or the legs of a chair
JoHaDez A rather endearing and amusing co-incidence in Johnny’s life is that his Grandfather was a well known cabinet maker in Berlin and he worked until he was 86.
or the wine glasses on a table all being texture scripted for a choice of colours. Another way that Johnny introduced hints of colour was via texture change planters with flowers, and these typically included choices for not only the vase but the flowers and plants themselves. As Second Life introduced the Materials features, Johnny released furniture that took full advantage. For instance, the “Driftwood Set” was released at the beginning of November 2013 to
JoHaDez celebrate the Firestorm viewer gaining Materials support. In this set it looked for all the world as if the carpenter had used driftwood from the beach, honed it in his workshop to build the frames and then added sumptuous leather cushions and plaid throws. As usual, part of the furniture was texture scripted, the throw having 14 different plaid textures, and the sofa and armchair was packed with animations and props, couple poses and LoveScene sequences in the Adult version. A beautifully rendered driftwood table, an unusual tripod lamp with texture change lampshade, a smart candlestick, a wooden bowl with apples and a wine set
that gave out wearable wineglasses were included in the set. The only homage to colour in this set was the apples whose contrast served to heighten the minimalistic style. In fact the whole scene was set to be one of those moments in time that Johnny is so fond of. We think it was achieved here at its best. Back to the present day and Johnny continues to produce perfectly textured minimalistic furniture. For example, the “Pure Wooden Chair”, is one of his latest designs, a worn wooden chair with a cloth that appears to be thrown nonchalantly over one side. Naturally, the cloth is texture scripted for 13 different textures
and ends up being only 4 land impact, the difference between the sculpts of yesteryear and the mesh of today. And the wood... is another amazingly lifelike texture, almost as though one could reach into the computer screen and check the wood for splinters! Needless to say, the chair would enhance any area in which it was placed. It is simply stylish and a ‘must have’ for all decor lovers. JoHaDez has taken part in a number of decor events such as The Men’s Department and The Challenge and is a regular at the Neighbourhood Event. This is outwardly a lot of work but it does serve as the impetus to keep him producing new designs. We asked about Johnny’s plans for the future. He still wants to build houses but time is always a big problem for him. His real life training as a media designer steals rather too much of his time and so building in Second Life is restricted to the weekends only. Also at some point he needs relaxation time, so we will have to wait and see. But whatever this imaginative designer manages to produce, it will always be a delight to his many returning customers, both old and new. Where to find JoHaDez

“A flamboyant color that's often tied to fun and happiness, orange exudes energy and warmth. It has the power to inspire people both mentally and emotionally to get them thinking and talking. And while associated with change, ambition and attitude, orange is an exciting color that attracts attention. Make a statement by pairing it with blue, red, yellow, green or a dash of purple.” -- http://www.prattandlambert.com

Recently I sat down with Mr. Godard a magical SL photographer at a quiet little café off the Second Life® (SL) beaten path to chat about what inspires him to create these amazing pictures. Mr Godard stated: “I’ve been here for several years, but I wasn’t interested in making pics until last year. My computer wasn’t good and the graphics were bad. I couldn’t even see the glow of the water. Then I got a new computer, and I was amazed by the graphics! I felt like capturing it, and that’s how it started. I’m interested in how SL pictures can look like they were taken in RL. My SL is not for a fantasy or a big adventure, I consider it as an extension of my RL.”

Not having a favorite designer he considers his style to be “shabby and real.” Staging the scene can take from a half hour to a week depending on how much stuff needs to be rezzed. Some of his SL home is in each picture and other things are props just for that particular picture. He states, “All my pics are meant to express my feelings from RL, not to show off my decorating skill in SL.” Luckily for us, we get to enjoy his SL pictures as they come into focus. He loves to play

with light, working with the suns natural shadows that come to play in everyday life. Mr. Godard loves to make his SL pictures look real. He states that finding pieces that have an aged appearance in SL photograph more easily and help to make the set look more real. Mr. Godard has not taken any SL photography classes; he enjoys simply working on his ideas bringing them to life. He also enjoys modern, clean and minimal styles as well, but these kinds of pic-
tures can come out more pixelated in SL. So at times it can be a fine line between bringing an object to life, or looking at a digitalized picture. Tokujin Yoshioka a Japanese product designer is one of his inspirations, and it is clear to see why he is a favorite. The enjoyment of the strong contrast of light and shadow, and preferring winter over summer is reflected in some of these pictures, like the first one. I can easily see myself sitting at this table on wheels on a cold winters day here in Cana-

da and enjoying this beam of light giving me a warmth that reminds me summer will come again. My cat following the winter’s beam of light around the room as they day progresses snoozing away the cold days dreaming of spring time with birds flying above. Upon having this interview Mr. Godard asked himself what photography means for him. He states that that he cannot describe how it feels to create each picture. words to bring across what his pictures are about. Mr. Godard says, “I like to focus on a specific theme, like the emotion or atmosphere, something like that. Not to show off how I decorate my house and not to show all the details. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a room; it can be a landscape, people or whatever. I have more rooms as the theme of the pics because I like still life photography, but it’s the feeling that I want to express, not the room itself.” In short Mr. Godard likes to take pictures of everyday life; moments we take for granted and bring them into focus. Like showing the beam of light in a room with furnishings. The furnishings are not entirely the theme of the picture; it is the light. To look at a picture and feel the warmth of the light coming through the window or down the street, is the purpose. Imagine yourself in one of his pictures. The days when going on holiday meant using a big old car with wooden paneling, the windows rolled down. So do what you love, enjoy life’s simple moments and bring into focus what is important to you.

100 Years... STYLIST: AUGUSTA GODENOT PHOTOS BY: SHAWNEESE OFFCOURSE (HARPER)
Throw back time! We’re taking you through a quick glance of the 1970s! Fitting for this Autumn season, this time period was defined by its orange, and mustard yellow tones. In addition, ‘70s was an exciting era for design, as furniture started to take a sleek modern look and people started to dream of the future. For this issue of LTD we brought the 70’s to our current time for an update. And yes. We left the shag carpet back in the time machine.

Guide Design to
There’s no better time than to camp out during the Summer-to-Autumn transition seasons. The weather isn’t too hot, and it isn’t too cold. In the words of Goldie Locks, “It’s just right.” This issue we take a trip through several camp scenes from glamping (glamorous camping) in the woods, to the high-life in an RV on the beach. Camp sites are a great way to become one with nature – though sometimes not too intimate. A few electronics and cushioned bedding help to remind us of the luxuries of home. So let’s celebrate the best of both worlds this issue! Grab some marshmallows and a warm blanket as you venture through our camp site exhibitions.

Kitchens FOCUS ON:
Though the kitchen is often times considered the room where the heart is, it can be one of the most difficult places to start decorating in Second LifeŽ. This issue, we asked our stylists to show us how their kitchens look. You’ll find that a basic kitchen set is typically used along with some details and props to give each a unique twist. Grab a pen and paper to take notes on how to make a kitchen another cozy part of your home.

Supper for Four... She picked up desserts from the corner bakery on her way home from work and is excited to show off her new Park Slope Townhouse to her guests. Have a peek at the kitchen as she prepares the soup and salad and pops the daisies in a vase. What is she serving? Shiitake Mushroom Soup, Beet and Avocado Salad, an assortment of breads, wines and cheeses followed by a selection of desserts... Bon appetit!
