JACKSON POLLOCK

This piece of work created by Jackson pollock is a large rectangular work made on paper, where Picasso’s Guernica painting is disguised as a painting like Pollock style. This work was done in Pollock technique is mostly a drawing where Pollock drips and splatters paint and those drips and splatters area represented or shown the symbolism of Picasso's Guernica . Pollock uses Indian ink on 114 sheet of Teslin which has essays and text written by artist between 1980 and 2016 printed on it.

The first essay was published on the magazine art forum in 1980 and it explores topics like realism, representation and authenticity, this essay is called Portrait of VI Lenin, but there is also other nine essay or texts that were publish by Art and Language in journals about art-historical and philosophical So, this artwork was a collaboration by Art and Language and Jackson Pollock which was or still is exhibited in Lisson Gallery

• PICASSO’S GERNICA(IN THE STYLE OF JACKSON POLLOCK, ESSAY II)

• 1980/2018

In my opinion is perfect that Pollock did a piece of work where he was not only inspired by the Guernica but Pollock also tried to disguise it in his painting however I think that Picasso’s painting is better when it seen as how it is an abstract painting talking about the desperation in wars and the sorrow of people in those wars where innocent people died even though Pollock gave another meaning to his own painting about realism, representation and authenticity as well as keeping the real meaning behind this magnificent painting of Picasso.

PRACTICAL WORK DEVELOPMENT

Inspirational artists for the wearable sculpture

Mandy Shapero Jim Drain

This work is inspired by Jackson Pollock and how he did the Guernica in his own style. Once the first part of the sculpture was hanged, I poured black paint with water to represent the problems that a person may have when struggling with mental health. As the sculpture fell, this show that when the problems are too heavy –the paint was too liquid, and the paper ripped- not always the person will be able to solve it and they might realise that they need a little help. However, with the second part of the sculpture, I used yellow paint showing those same problems but with a little help from some people, so not every part of the sculpture fell – the paint wasn’t too liquidthis is because when a person with mental health seeks for help, those problems become lighter The problems that they might be going through could be that they are being bullied at school or work, the stress caused by the amount of work that they have to do or even if they feel distress because of a deadline, this factors could affect mental health and it’s wellbeing

This sculpture symbolises a person that suffers from a mental health issues and who may feel alone and never talk about their problems. Such a person could have a mental breakdown at any moment because they put too much pression on themselves and don't look out for help or someone that could hear them. A lot of people look for not only people with mental illnesses, but sometime there are cases where the other person don’t listen to them but try to find a solution and then change the subject almost immediately to make it more to themselves

The paint that is poured on the sculpture represents the problems each person can have and the pressure they put on themselves. The sculpture that has the black paint are the problems that consume the person because they are trying to do it themselves. In this instance so they may end up consumed by the problem. The second sculpture symbolises an individual suffering similar problems however they have tried to reach out for help We can see a slight difference in the first sculpture is fully on the floor but the second one is still hanging from the nylon which show the difference of what a little help could do, the difference of a mental breakdown alone and a mental breakdown with someone. However not everyone is willing to help or to reach out for help.

CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION

Genes take part in whether or not we develop a mental illness

Problems with communication between neurones

With depression the brain has high levels of cortisol and low levels of serotonin

The processes and techniques that I use to produce the work that I do is very simplistic as I use abstract style and it is a way to symbolise my subtheme, mental health, which is very complex.

What I do is to try to show and express and make people aware that mental illness can be

Triggered by multiple reasons and how it feels to be in a constant fight with yourself and how tiring it can be. To have depression, something that I mostly focus on, is something that can affect all ages, but it mostly affect young people. This can be caused by stress given by the school or problems as well at school or home. Mental health is also something that a lot of young people tell their parents or guardians, but they might think that they are just weak minded, so a lot of young people prefer to not say anything as they feel like they will be judged by adults. In conclusion my sub-theme is actually more complex but the way that I present my outcomes will appear more simple.

This artwork is called War Within II it was created by Rashid Rana in 2013. The title says a war, people fighting on the left and right side and in the centre of the work there is some people on the floor however the work is pixelated. Rana creates this pixelated affect by digitally separating the work into squares and then combining them together until it has the pixelated look giving the old painting a new look.

Rana is interested in dualities of space, time, tradition, and culture. He uses pixelation to show these dualities. Rana takes paintings, mostly historical paintings, and rearranges them into a new piece, war within II the actual image of it is Oath of the Horatii by Jacques Louis David, so Rana broke down the image into a grid and then cut those into smaller pieces to suggest a different era and place. This is because Rana has an interest between actual and remote, which are defined by him like “actual is physically witnessed and shared through proximity, while remote refers to information that is experienced and understood second-hand, usually via media.”

Rana rearranges the painting so it can resemble media images of violence, bomb blast, fires, and dismemberment, by doing this what something was once history is now raw material that has as context the present, so through this practise what is based in imagination becomes something that shows and represents the chaos of reality “Rana’s practice is an act of upstaging as he rips apart the formal harmony of historic Western painting”

This piece of work makes me feel amazed because it is kind of hard to represent what the present and its chaos with a painting that had a completely meaning behind and rearrange it so it can have a new meaning that shows the violence in the present day.

NON – ARTIST RESEARCH

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER → MOVIE DIRECTOR → STEPHEN CHBOSKY

• CONTENT:

A movie about a boy who has depression, just discharged from a metal intuition he goes back to school where he meets some seniors and became friends with them makes some memories and new experiences, he is able to say he feels alive

• QUOTES:

- “and in that moment, I swear we were infinite”

- “I didn’t think anyone notice me”

- “I would die for you, but I won’t life for you”

- “we didn’t talk about anything heavy or light. We were just there together”

• QUESTIONS RAISED: How does actually just the of a friend or a person that we can connect can help to make life easier? Is there really a way to life ”peaceful” even if it is for a brief moment?

DPR IAN → SINGER ALBUM → MOODSWINGS IN THIS OREDER, 2021

• CONTENT: An album about bipolar disorder and how the artist has experience living with this disorder in his daily life and how it can affect the way he works and his personal life

• QUOTES:

• QUESTIONS RAISED:

- How difficult has to be to live with a mood swing and not knowing how often it can happen?

- Is there really a way to mental health issues in a positive way?

- “It’s hard to breath when you are not there”

- “ I know you feel the same. I tell myself to let go the pain, so sick of keeping it all”

- “ why does no one understand when I say I will drift away”

- “ I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine, I’m doing fine”

- “ before I change again, remind me of the time when I still remember”

The collages which are both sides are the two faces of metal health. One side is the side people show the society and the other one is the one they have when they are alone in their own mind and also how mental illnesses can affect in their day life

I have done 4 collages about:

1. Bipolar disorder

2. Anxiety disorder > Social Anxiety

3. Schizophrenia

4. Dissociative identity disorder/ multiple personality disorder

• Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings.

This first one is about bipolar disorder I used a final outcome from year 12, in the collage you can see two different continuous lines with two different colours, blue and red, these lines represent the disorder and the mood they might have at the moment the blue line represent anger and the red line represents fear.

The collages show how sudden a mood change can be and how much time the person can last in that mood but those mood changes are sometimes caused by an external reason that they can control, people can help to reduce those mood changes by taking medicine or therapies.

There is also a yellow line but in very few part and you can see it perfectly as it contrast with the dark blue and red, this colour shows the happiness or when they feel exited about something This mood of happiness don’t affect them that much on a daily basis however anger and fear affects them is a negative way as it makes it difficult for them to socialise and go to public places as other people might not know about it and get scared and try to cut ties with them.

• Social anxiety disorder is an overwhelming fear of social situations like meeting or speaking to people.

• Schizophrenia is a mental health condition where you may see, hear or believe things that are not real.

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), multiple personality disorder or multiple personality syndrome, is a mental disorder characterised by the presence of at least two distinct and relatively enduring personality states

RASHID RANA PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT

These sculptures are made with the collages of the artist response of Rashid Rana, they are representing how the

compressed emotions and feelings for fear of leaning on someone and this person ends up betraying them as on multiple occasions in the past where they trusted many people by telling them what was happening to them but the other person made their feelings less, making them not important and quickly changing the subject to talk about something about themselves which might causes the person to completely close off from asking for help form other people and causes trust issues or a trauma that will not be easy not get over as it has been multiple times

where this has happened and can make the people have problems when trying to have a good relationship with other people.

• Farewell letters together with the emotions that the person may feel before committing suicide- these compressed emotions have led the person to kill themselves since they couldn't take it anymore having to hide and hide everything that happened to them due to past traumas that led them to think that they have to keep everything to themselves because people would make them feel less and smaller, that no one cares what they feel and sadly they never get to meet someone who makes them feel that they can be trust them. Open up about his emotions to that person, then since they can no longer take those feelings that anguish him, they decide that it is better to leave this planet to be able to have peace without realising that the pain they felt will be passing on to his loved ones who have to live partly with that guilt of not having realised what was happening.

REFLECTING ON PRACTICAL WORK

- I started the component 2 project with the idea of focusing only on two mental health issues, depression and anxiety, I began to focus more on feelings and emotions of people with mental health problems and also how it could affect people close to them in the short and long term if they commit suicide So my view of this work changed a little bit about the different parts of mental health, it changed from just representing two mental health problems to a few more, but also added the subject of suicide, the traumas that cause these mental health issues and also how the loved ones feel when they find out how the individual is suffering and the things they do in order to escape that pain and suffering.

- One of the obstacles that most affected me was a small mental block I had when trying to develop the response to the second artist. This block did not allow me to think about what I could do and did not let me have ideas, so I could show what I wanted. Although this obstacle made me realize that my work was becoming a little repetitive in all aspects so I started using techniques that I had already used and I felt safe and confident using them to be able to develop my work completely

- With the first artist I chose to respond to his work, he helped me develop my ideas more, since I was able to represent the feelings that human beings can feel when their mental health is being affected by external factors which they cannot fully control, this also help me by making use of other techniques that I was not yet completely using but that I had already used in the past, to be able to express the feelings of pain and despair that come to feel and the fact that some people who suffer for their metal health do it alone for fear to be judged

- During the remaining weeks of the component 2 project, I feel that I could be more ambitious with my work if I stopped making only collages and tried to make sculptures and also videos in order to get a full potential from my work. So what I look for in my next artists for my work are those who make sculptures and use more vibrant colours so I can symbolize more about what causes those mental health problems instead of just the emotions and feelings they may have because of their mental health

- The second artist helped me develop that idea of feelings but exploring different mental health problems, such as schizophrenia, bipolarity and even multiple personality disorder, also including depression and social anxiety which I had experimented more deeply before When developing the work in response to the artist is when I talk about suicide and how it affects people close to them, as they call them suicide survivors, because when a person takes his life and dies, a part of the loved ones also leave with them and they are not going to be the same, in the short term the pain they feel is strong and they cannot get used to or believe that the person is no longer with them, in the long term they may continue to feel the pain but in the end family and friends get used to that pain and can go on with their lives, only they will not be able to enjoy the things they did just as they did before since it does not bring the same feelings of joy but now it also brings sadness.

TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH

The sculpture is inspired by Jackson Pollock, I took inspiration from him by spilling and splashing the sculpture with paint in order to symbolize emotions and what they may feel when having a mental illness My work is not very different from Pollock's as they both try to represent people's feelings and suffering but Pollock shows the suffering caused by war and I try to symbolize the suffering caused by the mind itself leaving the person weak and in trouble. In order to carry out his daily life, splashing and spilling paint is also used, although Pollock does it in a more controlled and defined way. In contrast, in my work I have no control over how much paint is spilled, so I cannot decide where it will fall and what. part will be covered in paint, so it's more unpredictable compared to Pollock's work.

TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH

This piece of work gives an idea of how painful it would be for the person's loved ones if they decide to commit suicide and the trauma it could cause them if they were the ones to find the lifeless body. The work shows the importance and care that some problem with their mental health has, since they can come to feel in the least desired and loved way by people who come to think that it would be better not to be alive What I like the most about this piece is that the different shades of red are made to look like blood and that the handwriting on the cards is slightly blurred by water, which symbolizes the tears that the person would shed when reading it. What I like least is that the cards don't look old or damaged, I would have liked them to have an older effect so I could show more of the feeling of not being able to let this affect them as much as in the past.

+25^N a work made by Tony Oursler inspired by facial recognition, this face is showing a digital face feature and the algorithm deigned from them. It maintains the interest of the artist on how technology plays a role in human behaviour as digital media is in our daily life.

Oursler focuses on the spread of big data but mainly interested in facial recognition technology. Oursler is inspired by multiple public and private organisations that use facial recognition techniques, including social media. The artist uses a web of geometric designs, scattered data points, and registration nodes integral for the composition of the work, incorporating a computer drawing representing mapping techniques and baseline characteristics that are essential for facial recognition. Oursler work tends to be in large scales and have a big consideration for the digital cultivation and to capture the identity of the person as well as who and how is the tracking used This body of work ultimately renders the technological realm from the counterpoint perspective of the machines that are increasingly modified to adapt human traits.

I like this piece of work the most, the reason for this is the way the lines do not look define but even then, the face features are really defined and clear. I also like how the vibrant, cold, and warm colours show the different thermal temperatures of the face so the face recognition can work, it also shows us how the dispositive see us when we are using

I am going to make a response of the artist work By taking inspiration from the fact that he uses body parts and how the colours contrast with each other, but my piece of work will be symbolising all the pain, traumas and conflicts that leads a person to have a mental health issue.

TONY OURSLER PRACTICAL RESPONSE

These hearts were made with clay, they were painted, one of them has wire and the other one has missing parts

These organs are representing the pain a person feels when a relative or a friend comm harming themselves, but this also shows how the individual feels when dealing with their mental health and are not capable of reaching for help in fear someone will judge them, tell them that they are just weak and that they do not have a real problem.

The heart with wire symbolises how the individual deal with their mental health, how much it hurts as it the blood comes in and out of the vessels and arteries wishing that it someday stop, showing that they think that will be better to be dead as they will be at ease rather than be alive and feel like no one pays attention to them, they are left out or they are not important and other people do not care about them. The main colours are red yellow and blue, the other are a mixture of these primary colours The primary colour represent the emotions of the person – sadness, fatigue and insomnia – these few emotions lead to other things that makes the person feel not enough like overthinking to negative thoughts or to stop eating.

The heart with missing parts represents a close relative or friend of the person that committed suicide, they are not complete as they person they were they most close to are not there with them anymore, so this person feel like a part of them is missing that they are not going to be able to see them anymore, they are not complete no more With the colours there is a small parts with primary colours showing that the sadness, fatigue and insomnia are starting to be part of their day, the rest of the colours are unknown by the person as they have a mix of emotions, so they do not know how to feel.

Imran Qureshi developed a contemporary practice that has its origins in the tradition of the 16th century Mughal miniature art This practice consists in joining figurative and abstracts works on paper, Qureshi combines these traditional motifs, techniques, and symbolism with conceptual ideas, these ideas are inspired by the socio-political reflections of modern life The use of gold leaf and red paint is something that is used in most of his works, this is a symbolic representation of the vulnerability of the human body.

In most of his works Qureshi uses only gold leaf, red acrylic paint and draws flowers. The colour red used in his works is a representation of the blood that flows through our veins, and the flower motifs suggests the possibility of renewal and growth. In his work Going Deep from 2018, Qureshi splattered blood-red paint on gold leaf on canvas and draw delicate a pant called plant tendrils with white, this work is contrasting the violence with beauty, also Qureshi is representing in an abstract way the collective history of his country.

What I like from this piece of work is that is how the artist tries to represent and show the political aspects of the modern life in an abstract way and how Qureshi shows his ideas in politics with a traditional technique making a contrast with the violence done by the government and the beauty that life should be. Also how Qureshi uses the drawings of a flower to symbolise the beauty but the the use of blood-red which is obvious trying to show the pain and all the people that has been killed because of wrong decisions made by the government

IMRAN QURESHI PRACTICE RESPONSE

This flower is called lycoris radiata which is used in Chinese and Japanese culture, is a representation of death and the soul of the person walks through hell adorned with these flowers to see its old life for the last time and that it can have the transition to its new life

With this flower made with two different colors it would show the balance of the life of two people who suffers from mental health issues and another who is said to be perfectly fine. The two flowers have a bit of color from the other this is to show that there are always going to be ups and downs and people can always go from one situation to the other at any time without realizing that they are getting better or worse. With the gold pen drawing these lines over the paint is to show how hard they are trying to stay but the negative thought are winning over them.

The blue flower is made more defined, more perfectly compared with to the other one. This flower shows a mentally stable person who has indices of having a mental health problem but is undiagnosed so they think it's all nonsense and that they are completely fine However the red marks are some of the problems that is making them suffer, some of those mark are faded and some of them are clear, showing the recent and past problems that had been accumulated with time

The red flower is the opposite to the blue one This flower shows how a person with a metal health issues is struggling so they think that there is no way out of those struggles but at the same time they are hiding that they are suffering, sometimes they have to fake how they are feeling. The blue marks on the drawing shows the good moments they have had with friends and family that have make they feel that there is a little hope for them to be save, but they end up falling in the dark again after a while.

Masaomi Yasunaga's Melting Vessel is a work of art that captures the essence of transformation and metamorphosis. The vessel, made from glaze and cooper, appears to be in a state of change, as if it is melting in front of our eyes The artist's use of colour and texture creates a strange atmosphere that draws the viewer in.

The piece speaks to the idea that change is inevitable and necessary for growth. Just as the vessel is transforming, so we also have to adapt and evolve in order to success. The delicate balance between fragility and strength symbolised by the piece reminds society that even when we feel vulnerable, we have the capacity to endure and keep going in life.

Overall, Masaomi Yasunaga's Melting Vessel is a powerful work of art that invites contemplation on the nature of transformation and resilience. Its beauty lies not only in its aesthetic qualities but also in its ability to inspire reflection on our own journeys through life. What I like about this piece of work is the meaning behind it, it makes me feel inspire and keep living even if there is problems that might make me feel down .
