From the EDITOR F
or fun, we asked friends, family and co-workers to take a copy of Luxe with them on their travels and take a photo for us. From Dubai to Australia to the Philippines and Mauritius, the first issue of LUXE was a true jet setter! We would like to invite our readers to let the next issue of LUXE accompany them on their travels, take a photo near a landmark in some interesting part of the world and email it with your details to us to be published. We managed to create a national footprint too with both the printed and electronic versions reaching Johannesburg, Pretoria and even the Cape. It's a great opportunity for us to showcase our spectacular area to the rest of the country and the world. Share our Facebook page with your friends and family to help us further promote this beautiful stretch of coastline. Have a look at our competition on pages 76 and 77, kindly sponsored by the eLan Property Group, one of South Africa's leading developer of lifestyle and tourism investment opportunities. There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs, from a romantic getaway at L'Ermitage in Franschhoek, a family trip to Sierra Ranch in the Midlands or for those a little more adventurous, a cruise on the Spirit of eLan. Unfortunately LUXE staff are excluded from entering, but we can always ensure that we undertake some market research! One of our contributors, Liza Gresse from UBUHLE HR & Management Consultants, suggested creating a theme for each of the

We were fortunate enough to be invited to visit the ATNS control tower at King Shaka International Airport. In our discussions with ACSA and ATNS, we discovered a wealth of information that we would like to share with our readers. Both ACSA and ATNS are excited about further contributions to LUXE magazine. 2016 has seen the launch or relaunch of a number of developments in our area. We attended the launch of Lazuli Coastal Lifestyle Estate in Port Zimbali, which was very professionally handled by Rainmaker Marketing. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

There has been much written and said about the “Baby Boomers” and there are differing opinions on what constitutes the “Baby Boomer Period”. It is though generally accepted that if you were born between 1946 and 1964 you can be defined as such.
T
he phrase "Baby Boomer" was coined after World War II (WWII) when Britain, the United States and Allied countries saw a huge increase in the number of births. Many Baby Boomers were born outside of the countries of their parents’ birth. I am a case in point as my British father who served as a captain with the Welsh Guards during WWII, and my mother, also British, were packed and ready to relocate from the UK to Canada after the war. Just prior to leaving, they received a message from a friend who had served as a Spitfire Pilot with my uncle, to visit him in Zimbabwe, where he was setting up a coffee farm. My parents went to visit and never left. There are over 25 countries, including South Africa that have some form of Baby Boomer generation. The Baby Boomers have been characterized as the generation that have pursued personal success, who are mostly well educated, very often workaholics and are generally adaptable. They are known as the “Prosperous Generation” and a large portion of this group are now in, or are entering retirement. In the years since our parents started retiring, the world has changed dramatically and people are generally living longer healthier lives. This has created motivation for Baby Boomers to adopt a new mind set to retirement.
in ways that are often very different from that of their previous chapter in life. While giving a talk to a retirement community recently, I was reminded that I was addressing the previous “captains of industry” and there is often a huge wealth of knowledge and experience in these communities. It is becoming increasingly common for these previous “captains of industry” to be involved in part time employment or consultancy work. Perhaps the Baby Boomer generation that has found itself in Africa often as a result of a decision made by our parents after WWII, have had to be particularly adaptable. If you are one of us, the “South African Baby Boomer Generation” I believe it is important to remain adaptable, to respond positively to getting older, to choose wisely what to do with time and energy and to ensure a purpose and meaning to this phase of life. Great things are rarely accomplished by those who back down to trends and try to conform to popular opinion. In many of the new gated secure communities in South Africa, there are often separate lifestyle villages aimed at the over 50’s with developers now responding to more active and productive lifestyle choices. With our weakening Rand, South Africa is set to become increasingly popular as a retirement destination. There are a number of new developments in the coastal corridor that we are focusing on with LUXE that are specializing in active retirement style living and are providing many of the associated facilities.
BABY BOOMERS
One of these is the recently launched “LAZULI” Coastal Estate situated in Port Zimbali on an outstanding hilltop site boasting both sea and inland views.
Retiring in SA's Coastal Corridor In my parents’ time, retirement was seen and often referred to as the “sunset years” a period of slowing down, kicking back and squeezing in a few extra golf games or extra visits to the grand kids.

This has generally not been acceptable to the Baby Boomer, who have challenged this mind set. They are seeing this phase not as an ending, but as a new period of enhanced living, a new beginning. They are remaining active and are responding positively to getting older. Today, the oldest Baby Boomers are turning 70, and providing they are healthy, can still expect many productive years ahead. Baby Boomers generally today do not retire, they just shift in focus. They will often have a career change instead of the traditional kick back retirement. And, depending on circumstances, choose to explore a combination of remunerated work and unpaid voluntary community based work and/ or pursue a hobby. They stay active and productive
This Estate, aimed at the active over 50’s, includes many exciting facilities and amenities with a truly stunning clubhouse, luxury health care suites with 24-hour supervision, private meeting or function suites, a state of the art fibre optics system, a gym with private personal trainers, a dedicated lobby porter, daily shuttle services, 24-hour dedicated security and residents storage facilities with exciting further additions to follow. Baby Boomers face plenty of challenges in transforming both their professional and private lives. With a home this often requires moving from a large, maintenance intense family based home to a more manageable, secure and hassle free unit. Start by gathering all the appropriate information, keeping your goals and aspirations in mind. “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years” – Abraham Lincoln

WHO PACKS YOUR
PARACHUTE? Navigating the skies of life and recognising the people who pack our parachutes.
I
am extremely thankful to the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur. As aviation pioneers they are credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903 four kilometre south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. My work as a Management Consultant and Executive Coach requires me to travel extensively, both in South Africa and globally. Flying is part of my life. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of these two brothers, I can live a wonderful life on the North Coast of KZN and work in Johannesburg and Cape Town by boarding a flight at King Shaka International and touching down one or two hours later at my work destination. During one of my many flights, the thought of safety and the role of parachutes came to mind. It reminded me of the story of one Charles Plumb, a US Navy pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into the enemy hands. He was captured and spent six years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and went on to lecture on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said: “You are Charles Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier ‘Kitty Hawk’. You were shot down!”. “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said: “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him. “It sure did. If your chute had not worked, I wouldn’t be here today!” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. He kept wondering what he had looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat; a bib on the back; and bell-bottom trousers. He wondered how many times he might have seen him and not even said “Good Morning, how are you?” or anything, because as Plumb explained: “I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor!” The story of Charles Plumb and the sailor that packed his parachute and ensured his safety reminds me always to stay alert to all the people who pack my life parachutes every day and to stay humble in the light of their support. I would therefore like to ask the question: Who’s packing your parachute/s?
Who are the people that noticeably and sometimes unnoticeably support you in your everyday life? Who are the people who advise you, sustain you and encourage you while you navigate through life? When last have you actually given recognition to your network of parachutes? As with fighter pilots flying over enemy territory, people need many parachutes as we navigate the airspace of life: A physical parachute, an emotional parachute, a mental parachute, and a spiritual parachute. These parachutes are the people who support us as we fly through life’s unknown territories. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment or just do something nice for no reason. As we go through life this week, this month, this year let us recognise people who pack our parachutes. In the words of Francois-Marie Arout de Voltaire, writer and philosopher of the 18th century: “Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” UBUNTU – I am, because you are.

Lazuli Coastal Lifestyle Estate sets the benchmark for retirement living on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal. Situated in Port Zimbali, mere minutes away from Ballito, where the weather is warm and everything you need from daily life is conveniently on your doorstep. 12
A
worldwide trend has seen baby boomers become a significant residential market. South Africa specifically, has seen enormous growth in this segment, with people, post school children and in their early 50’s, heading from conventional residential neighbourhoods to secure retirement estates. In general, the market has only recently realised the demand for active living with facilities that suit both young and old retirees, and as a result current demand outstrips supply. In light of this, Glenn Hesse and the Cenprop team have conceptualised and created a retirement opportunity that effectively ‘ticks all the boxes’ for this market – a superb location, contemporary homes, and an unsurpassed lifestyle.
Clubhouse, Restaurant & Business Suites The restaurant provides a picturesque setting to enjoy a continental style menu or place to enjoy a coffee and a light snack with friends. Located at the clubhouse is Lazuli's business centre - a communal workspace for Residents' exclusive use as a satellite office or a convenient meeting place. Seamlessly connect via highspeed fibre optic internet and enjoy the comfort of a professional, private space on your doorstep. For private meetings, Lazuli offers Residents 3 dedicated business suites.
HISTICATED RETIREMENT
Lazuli is the ultimate coastal residence, where life just feels right, and the beauty of the lush surrounds inspires an active lifestyle. The residential development seeks to fulfil the desire for private space balanced with a sense of community and social living.” Introducing Lazuli Coastal Lifestyle Estate, Glenn Hesse, Developer of Lazuli, said,
healthy, happy and active lives; and we are confident that we have achieved this” confirms Hesse.
“The North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, and more specifically Port Zimbali, has been identified as a true gem on our coastline. It really does present a unique way of life, especially for those entering or in their retirement years – with its pleasant climate, top golf courses, beautiful beaches, upmarket shopping centres, and nearby amenities - it really does have it all.”
He continues, “A key differentiator for Lazuli is the fact that it caters for an active market, as well as those in the later stages of their retirement and looking for more specialised facilities”.
Adding to the areas exclusive lifestyle, Lazuli is a 126unit estate offering sophisticated retirement living. Neighbouring the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate and boasting magnificent views of the ocean, lush sugar cane fields and golf course, the first phase which launched on the 13th February 2016 achieved R50m in sales on the opening weekend and consists of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom luxury apartments. “The facilities at Lazuli are really what sets it apart from other estates in the area, ultimately setting the benchmark for gated retirement communities. The estate features a clubhouse with a heated lap pool, business suite, fitness centre, porter and shuttle services, restaurant and 24-hour security, to name but a few. Most significantly, Lazuli will offer assisted living with 24-hour supervision. Our key objective for Lazuli is to create an estate where residents can live independent, 14
Enhancing the upmarket, exclusive lifestyle that has been uniquely tailored for the active over-50’s market, the apartments are characterised by a distinctive blend of modern design and traditional living. This is reflected in the generously spaced architecture, quality interiors and the flawless finishes. “In close proximity to King Shaka International Airport, the vibrant Umhlanga Village and Gateway Theatre Shopping, as well as the Big 5 Game Reserves to the North, the location truly is amazing and has ensured that the response prior to launch has already been extremely positive from potential buyers in KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and even abroad. We are certain that Lazuli is poised to become the premium retirement estate for over 50’s market,” ends Hesse. In recent years, Cenprop has successfully developed a number of estates including Dunkirk Estate in Salt Rock, Loxley Estate in Sheffield Beach, St. John’s Village in Howick, Mzingazi Golf Estate in Richards Bay, and Redlands Estate in Pietermaritzburg. With the move of the airport to the North Coast, King Shaka International Airport has certainly grown our local contingent of pilots. Apparently you just need to 'shake a tree, and a pilot will fall out'! The choice of gated community living for our two featured commercial pilots made the move here easier and more secure. We chatted to them about their passion for flying and all things coastal.

O
riginally from Johannesburg, the Martins family have been living on our beautiful stretch of coast for the last three years. Paulo and Kate Martins, with little Dominic and not so little Weimaraner dog, Armani welcomed us into their Palm Lakes Estate home to chat to us about the life of a pilot. "My love of flying started when I was very little", says Paulo. With family over in Portugal, holidays to the Southern European country were often undertaken, and each time, Paulo was in awe of the airport, the planes and flying. "I was a regular on the flight deck, taking in all the gizmo's and gadgets and asking as many questions as I could", he says.

Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” Leonardo da Vinci
While growing up, living close to an airfield helped cement his passion, and Paulo officially started flying when he was fifteen. He received his Private Pilot Licence (PPL) at seventeen and relished taking to the skies in Cessna's and Piper Cherokee's. "It takes 200 flight hours to get your commercial pilots licence but you are really only employable by the airlines after 1,000 to 1,500 flying hours". Paulo's determination to become an airline pilot despite the high cost of flying hours, led to him aggressively marketing himself and networking with those in the industry. When he finished school, Paulo worked as a flight attendant while racking up his hours towards
his commercial licence and this is where he met his wife Kate.
Once qualified, he successfully nabbed a pilot position with Nationwide Airlines flying the Johannesburg to London route. While flying with Nationwide, Paulo was part of the relief effort for those affected by the tsunami in Thailand, taking supplies to the country and flying South Africans home. "One of my greatest experiences has been flying the soccer teams to and from games during the Soccer World Cup in 2010. As a huge soccer fan, when I was allocated the Portuguese team, it was a dream come true!". Paulo moved over to SA Express after Nationwide halted operations
in 2008. And in 2012, who could say no to a transfer to the coast which offered a command post to boot? Paulo currently flies domestic routes with SA Express - Durban to East London, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Lusaka and Harare. "It is definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made", said Paulo.
“Being offered a position here on the North Coast, with a promotion to boot, definitely ticked all the right boxes for us. Coastal stations are definitely more relaxed and not as formal as the inland counterparts.” 17
SA pilots are rated very highly globally because they have to fight their way to the top in SA often taking on the African and Middle East routes to gain experience. The industry is regulated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and one of their requirements is 'recurrency training' which is undertaken by pilots every 6 months. SA Express make use of simulators overseas in Germany and France, with pilots undergoing rigorous training involving all possible aircraft accidents and incidents.
value for money on an almost completed spec home to which the couple were still able to add some personal touches to, officially sealed the deal.
With the original goal of wanting to fly for Emirates, which would require moving to Dubai, Paulo says that after moving here to the coast, family life has been so fantastic that moving to Dubai has been moved down the priority list.
A new passion for Paulo came about one day when he saw aerobatic pilots practicing over the estate. He assumed they must be taking off and landing at the Groutville / Mvoti airfield and took a drive up to chat to the pilots. This turned into Paulo buying a share in a YAK52 plane with three partners (Martin Shulze, Chris Peirson and JP Maingard) and learnt to fly the YAK at Virginia Airport.
Having only 3 months to find a home and transfer down to the coast, the couple narrowed their search down to Palm Lakes Estate, which was love at first sight. The estate's policy on allowing big breed dogs, such as their Weimaraner , and the

The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a Soviet primary trainer aircraft which first flew in 1976 and is still being produced in Romania by Aerostar.
The Yak-52 was originally designed for training military and civilian pilots in the Soviet DOSAAF. Since the early 1990s and the fall of the Soviet Union, many Yak 52s have been exported to the west. Of the approximately 1,800 produced to date, most now fly in the USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia and a few have found their way to South Africa, and more specifically to our coastal corridor. The all-metal Yak-52 is powered by a 268 kW (360 hp) Vedeneyev M14P 9-cylinder radial engine. Since the aircraft was designed to serve as a military trainer, the development of the aircraft incorporates a number of features to be found on the early post18
YAK-52
war fighters. The aircraft has inverted fuel and oil systems permitting inverted flight for as long as two minutes. The engine drives a two-bladed counter-clockwise rotating, variable pitch, wood and fibreglass laminate propeller. At 998 kg empty weight, the Yak-52 is responsive and very capable as an aerobatic aircraft. Yet it is also easy to fly and land. It has been used in international aerobatic competition up to the Advanced level. It is stressed to +7 and –5 Gs, rolls (to the right) at 180 degrees/second and is capable of every manoeuvre in the Aresti catalogue. The Yak-52, like most
Soviet military aircraft, was designed to operate in rugged environments with minimal maintenance. The tricycle landing gear is retractable, but it remains partially exposed in the retracted position, affording both a useful level of drag in down manoeuvres and a measure of protection should the plane be forced to land "wheels up." A number of "westernised" versions of the Yak-52 are now produced. The replacement of the existing Soviet avionics, fitting of a three-blade propeller and the M14PF 298 kW (400 hp) upgrade to the usual 360
hp M14P engine, and conversion to conventional "tail-dragger" landing gear (Yak-52TD) are some of the modifications made to the standard aircraft. There is also a factory produced Yak-52TW taildragger version. The TW has an extra 120 l (32 US gal) of fuel capacity in two extra wing tanks, the M14PF engine designated & three blade propeller, an electric start, and modern instruments. On April 16, 2004, a modernised variant Yak-52M was flown in Russia. It is fitted with modernised M-14Kh engine, three-blade propeller, and other modifications.

young age. After getting his PPL on fixed-wing light aircraft in 1981 and discovering microlights in 1990, David has done in excess of 5,000 hours of microlight flying and over 55,000 landings. He is a senior instructor and does his own maintenance on his aircraft. David explains that micro-lighting is the perfect way to see nature, as they are open and are able to fly slowly safely.
INSTRUCTOR: Kevin Mackridge I spent my youth living next to OR Thambo International Airport neighboured by Denel Aircraft Aviation Company. Here the Cheetah jet fighter and Rooivalk helicopter was researched and test flown next to my house. As a young man growing up, my hours were spent with a pair of binoculars sitting on the apex of our house roof drooling and dreaming over someday flying these amazing machines. Long story short “life” happened and before I wiped my eyes out I was already into a career and married with kids. A good friend introduced me to micro-lighting and the passion for flying was reignited. I qualified at the Ballito flying school in 2007. After a couple years of flying I felt I wanted to up my game and David Daniel offered me an advanced flying course which saw me getting my instructors rating. Living here and flying our North coast is absolutely spectacular and I have to sometimes pinch myself to remind me of how blessed I am of not only flying my own aircraft but living here in beautiful Ballito. I spend most holidays and weekends instructing new pilots and introducing tourists to our sport and showcasing the beauty of our coastline. It’s the seat of your pants flying that has attracted me to this sport as this type of flying is not too far apart from how the Wright brothers first started aviation more than a hundred years ago.
Low flying by Ron van Breda at Tugela River mouth
Forgive us for the noise, it's just too beautiful up here!” David Daniel - Pilot, Instructor & Owner Come Fly
INSTRUCTOR: Adam Watson My most common re-occurring dream as a child was about flying. I eventually pursued my desire to fly when I was 25 when I did my PPL at Charles Prince Airport in Zimbabwe. I learnt to fly in a Cessna 172 and went on to do ratings in a number of light aircraft. I bought a 6 seater Cessna 206 (a great “bush strip” aircraft). When relocating to South Africa, I chose Ballito specifically for the spectacular flying weather. I was very envious watching the micro-lights flying along the coast and soon completed my conversion to trikes, which was interesting as the controls are opposite to a fixed-wing aircraft. I loved this flying so much, I went on to become an instructor. I think that most pilots at some point have a desire to fly helicopters with their unique ability to hover and fly backwards. I was lucky enough to do my chopper license in 2006 at Virginia Airport. For the fun of flight, it is hard to beat the experience and freedom in an open flexi-wing micro-light and if you have not already experienced this, a flight along our magnificent coast is hard to beat and should be something everyone experiences at least once.
INSTRUCTOR: Ron van Breda My passion for flying was ignited as a young boy when my dad bought a Taylorcraft aircraft. The first time I took to the skies I just knew I wanted to be a pilot myself one day. I started flying hang gliders in 1978 and finally did a PPL at Virginia in 1986. I took to the skies every opportunity I could get... I met Craig Couzens at a Virginia air show when he was manning a micro-light static display. The open cockpit "wind in your face" flying concept appealed to me, so I decided to explore it further. I scheduled a visit to Comefly Pilot Centre when they were still based in La Mercy and after an introductory flight signed up for a conversion to the weight shift trikes. I'm a qualified micro-light instructor and have now been flying mirco-lights for 14 years. You have greater freedom of movement with a microlight because the planes are highly agile and landing distances are also shorter. This makes exploring our beautiful Natal coastline a joy. We are incredibly privileged to be surrounded by such scenic beauty and abundant sea life. 19
Sandy and Charl du Rand at home in Simbithi Eco Estate.
Commercial pilot, Charl du Rand, started his flying career in the South African Air Force (SAAF), a veritable top gun pilot - what dreams are made of!
O
riginally from Zimbabwe, Charl du Rand moved to South Africa at the age of 19 to start his flying career with the South African Air Force. "My father was a military pilot and my passion for flying started at a very young age", says Charl. "Of course, he did try to deter me from becoming a pilot, but the allure was too strong!". After an intensive two year training course which involved weapons training, aerobatic flying, formation flying and focussed, in-depth military flying, Charl went on to fly fighter jets (Mirage's, Impala's and Cheetah's) for the Air Force for a total of 10 years. "I spent the last two years with the military as an instructor, and left at the pinnacle of my career. I didn’t want to end up flying a desk, so left the Air Force to fly commercial with South African Airways (SAA), where I could continue to fly airplanes!", laughs Charl. When joining SAA 22 years ago, it was necessary for Charl to take an exam to convert to a commercial license. "Flying commercial is a lot more instrument flying than flying fighter jets", says Charl. Charl is one of around 800 pilots currently with SAA and holds the position of Senior Captain of long range fleets. He was a domestic route training instructor for 12 years (he has been on a break

M I RAG E from training for the last 3 years) but would like to get back into the training of commercial pilots as he really enjoys it. The road to the top of a commercial pilots career starts with being a relief pilot (Third Pilot) on long haul flights, then onto co-pilot (First Officer) on domestic and then long distance flights, Junior Captain on domestic flights, Captain on long range flights and finally Senior Captain.
Mirage was a name given to several types of jet aircraft designed by the French company Dassault Aviation, some of which were produced in different variants. Most were of delta wing configuration. The most successful was the Mirage III fighter in its many variants, which were widely produced both by Dassault and by other companies.
Training at the airline is continuous with two mandatory training sessions annually in a simulator (SAA has its own simulators). Pilots do self study to keep up with technology and changes in the industry. Pilots receive a monthly schedule of flights and depending on seniority and availability, pilots can bid for flights, the airline does try to keep families happy! Because pilots only spend short periods of time at destinations, jet lag can become a problem. Charl says, "Flying west for me is the worst, but I personally stay on South African time and it is then not too bad". It was while at SAA that Charl met his wife Sandy, who was an air hostess with SAA. "I grew up in Namibia and moved to Cape Town at the age of 18, where I took up a position with the airlines at a whim", says Sandy. The couple have two boys aged 9 and 14, both of whom want to be pilots. "We often have Lego airports and runways all over the house!", says Sandy. Balancing work and family has at times been challenging but because Sandy was in the industry for 14 years until she had her first child, they both knew the rigours of being involved in air travel life. "Technology such as Skype, email and cellphones has certainly helped over the last few years, its not quite the same as having to use an international calling card from a tikkie box!".
C HEETAH The Atlas Cheetah is a South African fighter aircraft, developed for the South African Air Force (SAAF). It was developed as a major upgrade of the Dassault Mirage III by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation (later Denel Aviation) in South Africa. Three different variants were created, 16 dual-seat Cheetah D, 16 single-seat Cheetah E and 38 single-seat Cheetah C. The Cheetah Es were retired in 1992, and the Cheetah Cs and Cheetah Ds in April 2008, being replaced by the Saab Gripen. A limited number are still operated in South Africa as flight test aircraft.
While based in Johannesburg, the couple started building their dream home in Simbithi Eco Estate. "We built the home remotely, which was challenging, but it helped that I had a jump seat on the Johannesburg to Durban flights and I could visit the site twice a week during the build", says Charl. Charl is still based in Johannesburg and technically commutes to work. This was an important factor when choosing the location of their coastal home, and with Simbithi being so close to the new airport, it was perfect. "Charl grew up on a farm and wanted to live in a place with lots of open space, and I grew up along the coast in Namibia and wanted to one day live on the coast again", says Sandy.
"We made a great investment building our home in Simbithi, with the security the estate provides, the easy access to schools and hospitals, and of course, the 10 minute drive to King Shaka International Airport". The family undertakes night safari rides around the estate on a golf cart, armed with flash-lights and hot chocolate, seeing if they can spot any wild animals, great fun!
I M PAL A South Africa obtained a license to produce the MB-326M, as the Impala Mk I in 1964 with production starting in 1966. Used as both trainers and in an armed configuration. The aircraft had many advantages over expensive supersonic jets. Although slower, it could operate from relatively primitive airfields and strike swiftly. The Silver Falcons, the SAAF aerobatic team, were equipped before with Impala Mk Is. 21
THE WORK OF AN
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER In our discussions with local residents, it was interesting to see the number of misconceptions that there are concerning how aircraft are controlled and routed in an out of our new airport. he important task of ensuring the safe operations of commercial and private aircraft falls on air traffic controllers. They must coordinate the movements of thousands of aircraft, keep them at safe distances from each other, direct them during take-off and landing from airports, direct them around bad weather and ensure that traffic flows smoothly with minimal delays.
the immediate airport environment is by visual observation from the airport control tower. Air traffic controllers who sit in these towers have an uninterrupted view of arriving and departing aircraft and both aircraft and vehicles on the ground. These controllers are responsible for the separation and efficient movement of aircraft and vehicles operating on the taxiways and runways of the airport itself.
Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) provides air traffic, navigation, training and associated services within South Africa and a large part of the Southern Indian and Atlantic Ocean. It is interesting to note that this service covers approximately 10% of the world's airspace.
Any aircraft, vehicle, or person walking or working in these areas is required to have clearance from Ground Control. Ground Control is vital to the smooth operation of the airport, because this position impacts the sequencing of departure aircraft, affecting the safety and efficiency of the airport's operation.
Air traffic control (ATC) is a service directing aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace. ATC also provides advisory services to aircraft in non-controlled airspace. The primary purpose of ATC worldwide is to prevent collisions, organize and expedite the flow of air traffic, provide information and other support for pilots. To prevent collisions, ATC enforces traffic separation rules, which ensure each aircraft maintains a minimum amount of empty space around it at all times. The areas of responsibility for controllers fall into three general operational disciplines; Tower/ Aerodrome Control, Ground Control, and Clearance Delivery. Aircraft in the air near the airport, generally 5 to 10 nautical miles (9 to 18 km) depending on the airport procedures get handed over to Tower that has its own radio frequency to communicate with pilots. The primary method of controlling 22
Tower Control is responsible for the active runway surfaces. Tower clears aircraft for takeoff or landing, ensuring that prescribed runway separation will exist at all times. If Tower detects any unsafe condition, a landing aircraft may be told to "go-around" and be re-sequenced into the landing pattern by the approach controller. Many airports have a radar control facility that is associated with the airport. While every airport varies, approach controllers usually handle traffic in a 30-to-50-nautical-mile (56 to 93 km) radius from the airport. Approach controllers are responsible for providing all ATC services within their airspace. Traffic flow is broadly divided into departures, arrivals, and overflights. As aircraft
The ATNS King Shaka Control Tower is named after His Excellency, iLemb’ eleq amany’ amaLembe ngokukhalipha, King Shaka Zulu kaSenzangakhona (1787–1828). The tower airport captures the roots and pride of the KwaZulu Natal province with its architecture. The wave-like roof design of the building at the bottom of the tower represents the Indian Ocean coastline while the shaft (though elongated) depicts the neck of a Zulu woman and the cab level represents Isicholo, which is traditional head-gear of a respectable Zulu woman – worn as a crown. The different shades of blue on the Control Cab represent the colour off the ocean at different depths as well as ATNS corporate colours. The entire design therefore represents a respectable Zulu woman, well respected by Ingonyama uShaka, looking over the airport whilst cooling off in the ocean.
move in and out of the terminal airspace, they are handed off to the next appropriate control facility (a control tower, an en-route control facility, or a bordering terminal or approach control). Area control handles Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) aircraft from the time they depart from an airport or terminal area's airspace to the time they arrive at another airport or terminal area's airspace (Approach Control). Area controllers are responsible for issuing instructions to pilots to climb their aircraft to their assigned altitude while, at the same time, ensuring that the aircraft is properly separated from all other aircraft in the immediate area. Additionally, the aircraft must be placed in a flow consistent with the aircraft's route of flight. This effort is complicated by crossing traffic, severe weather, special missions that require large airspace allocations, and traffic density.

irport Company South Africa (ACSA) subscribes to international, national and local standards whose core principles include the environmental sustainability. Noise pollution is a health and environmental concern that requires strategic consideration throughout the business planning and operation. The King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) is a greenfield development that strive to continuously reduce its impact on the environment. Aircraft noise is a subject that can be highly technical and complex. It remains one of key focal areas as it has the potential to negatively affect the environment and the surrounding communities. To address this, KSIA developed a number of programmes aimed at increasing the understanding of noise impacts, identifying solutions for reducing these impacts and involving as well as educating the local communities on noise issues and their management. Achieving the balance between the increasing airport operations and the rights and requirements of our nearest residential neighbours provides an ongoing challenge for KSIA as it does for airports worldwide. As soon as the Airport started operating in 2010, KSIA established a Noise Consultative Committee which comprised of representatives from the community, adjacent landowners, industry experts (such as Air Traffic and Navigational Services), local authorities, as well as airline and pilots. The committee’s role is to review the impact of aircraft noise exposure on the surrounding community and, in a consultative manner, make recommendations to minimise the effect of aircraft noise. In collaboration with the committee, KSIA installed noise monitoring equipment, linked to the flight tracking system, at five strategic locations. This system collate all information on noise levels by aircraft and provide information to assist in analysing complaints by the local communities. It is so accurate that any aircraft that attracts a complaint can be pinpointed and the sound level experienced by the complainant reviewed. Tied to the noise monitoring system, is the implementation of noise abatement procedures. Noise Abatement procedures are designed to minimise exposure of residential areas to aircraft noise. These procedures are carefully tailored operating instructions for pilots to ensure that they fly using the least noisy configurations while maintaining the utmost safety of their passengers and operations. The Air Traffic and Navigational Services (ATNS) plays a critical role in enforcement of these procedures to all pilots and aircrafts operating at KSIA. ACSA ascribes to a philosophy of continuous improvement. Through the expertise and input of the Noise Committee, KSIA continues to investigate and identify impactful solutions to enhance the environment.

We are STAR DUST
T
he leftovers of dying stars are spread through space, where they lump together later to form new stars. Nothing is wasted. Their atoms are incorporated into new gas clouds and new stars. Just like the atoms in your and my bodies. They just get recycled. One day, atoms which were found in my body may become part of the tentacle of a sea anemone, or the testicle of a zebra, or the tummy of a crocodile. Or into the petal of a beautiful flower. We are made of stardust and we shall return to stardust. The battle of the survival of the fittest is similarly fought in the heavens. Galaxies and stars are just as egocentric and self centred as us. They are fiercely competitive. Each one fights for its survival. Galaxies compete fiercely amongst each other for space and food. They clash in mighty battles, yielding every imaginable weapon they can muster, crash into each other, and devour each other with a voracious appetite. The big ones mostly win. The big and strong survive. Or the more creative ones which outwit others cunningly and stealthily. On a grand, cosmic scale of things, everything eats everything. As Woody Allen said, “life is just one big restaurant”. Not only life, but non-living matter is also locked in a constant battle to survive.
Our lives are lived out very much like the lives of stars and galaxies. Stars get born in galactic nurseries; they grow up, become adult, then grow old and die.
NICO ROOS Nico Roos is a local clinical psychologist and author of popular psychology books. He can be contacted at nicopsych@gmail.com
Galaxies and stars steal from each other; pinch each other’s partners in the infidelity game. Some are good at running, others at attacking; others succumb to inevitable fate, just giving up. Some stars are cannibalistic, eat others, growing fat and discard the remains of their victims in interstellar space. Just like some humans. Half of all stars are born as twins, and will stick to their mates most of the time, their fate interlocked until they die, sharing the same orbits around each other. Others prefer to go it alone, becoming masters of their own destiny, living individualistic lives. Some are very ambitious, vying to become massive, blue giants with much influence on other bodies around them. They live short lives and die young, in a blaze of spectacular super nova explosions. They will be remembered for long. Others opt for unspectacular, low keyed lives. They live conservative and long lives as small red stars, consuming their energy sources slowly. However, there is one big difference between us and stars: we have a consciousness. We are not regulated by blind forces. We can make decisions and we have a measure of control over how we want to play the game of life and death. And that makes us very special. Look up at the stars on a clear night and contemplate the vastness of it all. We end our lives in the same way as they do. But we have the choice to live our lives less ruthlessly, but with love and compassion, with understanding, less egotistically.

LUXE LIFE Ntaba Phili, Managing Director and founder of NAPD Holdings, a Turnkey Property Services company, chats to us about returning to his roots and establishing a luxurious beach house for the holiday market in Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach.
If you’re after a relaxing getaway or a holiday house for a family vacation by the sea, this property is ideal.
H
ailing from KwaZulu-Natal where he spent his formative years in Marianhill, Pinetown, Ntaba Phili's first move out of the province was to study for a Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry at the University of Cape Town (UCT). From there he spread his wings as a Corporate Executive for 10 years, before going back to UCT to complete a Property Development Programme (PDP), and a Master of Business Leadership (MBL), all the while dreaming and planning for a career change to property, to become an entrepreneur like his father, who was a self made businessman. Ntaba established NAPD Holdings, now a property services company 15 years ago, by first sinking his teeth into interior design, through NAP Designs, a corporate interior architectural practice with a focus on providing space planning and tenant installations. Through dedication and hard work he organically grew the company into the NAPD Group, by adding NAP Developments, a property development and construction services company. The NAPD Holdings Group also specialises in property investment in the commercial sector.
"The early days were challenging to say the least. In our twelve years involved in the property business, we've seen enormous growth in the sector that has created new challenges and opportunities brought on by the shift towards efficient space utilisation", says Ntaba.
With a love of travel, Ntaba enjoys seeing the world, particularly the opportunity to experience different architectural styles and property practices. As a member of the SA Council of Shopping Centres (SACS), Green Building Council SA, and SAPOA, he gets to travel for two weeks in a year to explore international property trends, hosted by similar councils in the host country. He has most recently visited the USA, Denmark and Brazil. Art is his second passion and he took up classes as a youngster. "This may well be my second career in later life", he laughs. Highly passionate about business, Ntaba also shares this passion with his very versatile team at NAPD. Consisting of both full time and consultant staff, the team is made up of Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Interior Designers and Architects. Ntaba is moving back to his roots by bringing the experience and knowledge that he obtained over the past 12 years in property development, back to KwaZulu Natal. With a couple of large projects recently completed in KZN for Transnet, Ithala and KZN Tourism, Ntaba is looking to branch out from the commercial sector into the high end luxury residential market in KwaZulu Natal. This private passion turned into business for the creation and development of luxurious spaces, and particularly his love of the beach and all it has to offer, saw the birth of Luxe Life House in Sheffield Beach Road, Salt Rock. "I bought the property with the intention of using it as a personal holiday retreat but decided to share this space with those also looking for exclusivity and privacy while on holiday", says Ntaba.

LUXURY ACCOMMODATION
Afternoons are also a great time to spend time at the nearby beaches, a short distance away, with a choice of Sheffield Beach or Salt Rock Beach, both offering wonderfully warm waters to splash about. When planning for a holiday on the seaside, you’d expect to spend all your time outdoors, but this property has you torn, as the pleasure of languishing on the luxurious interiors or lying poolside on the deck with great ocean views, seems equally inviting. The entertainment area offers an expansive open plan setting with numerous lounges for effortless entertaining and living. Set in an almost idyllic African sanctuary by the sea, the Luxe Life is probably the best way to describe this tranquil beach holiday destination. A combination of all the things one looks forward to on a sea-side break away.
Luxe Life House is a Beach House nestled on a hill overlooking the warm Indian Ocean, in the beautiful and aptly named, seaside town of Salt Rock on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. The property is surrounded by idyllic sea views, with Whale watching and Dolphin spotting viewed from large open windows and lush rugs under-foot with lots of warm light streaming in. For a true outdoor, indoor living experience, the property offers large double volume spaces with fully stackable glass doors. The doors are slightly turned in for the mid afternoon summer drizzle and a sumptuous glass of wine when the sun is out, or for the well heeled, a quiet read in the library.
High volume ceilings and expansive living spaces in this property make one to relax and breathe a little deeper. 36
NAPD Holdings (Pty) Ltd is a black-owned property development and investment holding company that invests, develops and manages premier business properties in the commercial sector with a particular focus towards corporate office developments.

Architecture & Interiors Property Development Property Management Property Investment The design of the house provides and interesting mix with its modern design and interior fittings and all the mod cons that one is used to, juxtaposed with the seaside charm of Salt Rock.

EDUCATING For the 21st Century
Text CrawfordSchools™ | Photography Matthew Willman | Location Tongaat North Coast & Armstrong Ave La Lucia
The education required to engage successfully in the 21st century is very different from what has been required in the past.
The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” Alvin Toffler
S
tudents need to be flexible, curious and resilient. As the world enters the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the digital revolution which will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another, education needs to adapt and change.
EDUCATION & LEARNING
CrawfordSchools™ offers a progressive education where the focus is on preparing students for the future, today. Students are required to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills so that they are able to see problems from different angles and formulate their own solutions. Regardless of the field they choose to enter for their careers, the ability to think and act quickly is an indispensable tool for the future. The digital age demands collaboration across networks and leading by influence. Not every person is born a natural leader. However, the ability to lead others can definitely help a person to advance and become successful in their chosen career. In almost every job the ability to work closely and harmoniously with others is highly valued.
CrawfordSchools™ are committed to developing leaders through various leadership programs in school experience from pre- school though preparatory up to College level. In the classroom, on the sports field or in the cultural arena there are many different roles that students can fill that allows them to work with others in a more collaborative way. Survival in the 21st century demands skills of agility and adaptability. Crawford teachers create a dynamic environment within the classroom that help to prepare students for constant change. Opportunities are created for the development of entrepreneurial skills, and to allow for initiative creativity to be shown. Children need to be involved and interested in shaping their learning experience. They should never be afraid of trying because they are afraid of failure. We are existing in an era of communication and information. Access to unimaginable amounts of information is available today. The Internet provides an incredible research tool that can be a student's
best friend or worst enemy. They need to learn the difference between factual information and factual-sounding opinions. Knowing how to manipulate information for effective oral or written communication is important. Children come to us naturally curious about their world and wanting to explore it. Their imaginations are vast and untamed, creating endless amounts of practical and impractical things.
“As teachers we need to continue to nurture them to develop their curiosity and imagination, as well as teach them how to apply them creatively and purposefully.” We may not know exactly what lies ahead for our students in the future, but CrawfordSchools™ have the advantage of knowing what skills they will need once they get there: to think critically, to work as a team, but most of all to be curious and excited about learning... 45

Fairway Ridge Villas, Mount Richmore Estate Development opportunity
T
there is a unique opportunity for an investor with the development of 15 sectional title units. Although the site is situated on Mount Richmore Estate, it will be secured separately and accessed through its own security point off Fairway Road, Salt Rock. Fairway Ridge Boutique Estate will have access to the rest of the Mount Richmore estate facilities which include the new popular Curro School and is within easy walking distance to the very popular Salt Rock Beach.
COMPACT NATURAL LI Text Michael le Court de Billot | Company CA Architects | Location Mount Richmore Estate, Salt Rock
The units are approximately 250sqm and are available in 3 or 4 bedroom options. The design has incorporated many new energy saving features, to reduce the dependency on the grid as much as possible. The concept of light, space & movement within a split level compact living space, was important in the design brief. The ground floor combines four fundamental living spaces which circulate naturally into one another, blurring the boundaries of entertainment & basic living. Naturally lit, high level ceilings marry light, volume & space within the en-suite upper floor bedrooms, with faรงades sliding open to bring the outside in. 46
Architecture that exists within nature is as fundamental as the bricks used to build it.
BRAAI
Full length glazed façades fold back and panels disappear into walls, a circulation of natural ventilation, light & movement as one entity flows throughout the open living space. The locally sourced untreated timber facade will fade to grey as time passes, blending the architectural forms into its surroundings, creating unity within the site landscape.

“The idea of 'compact, natural living' is quite simple; invite natural light deep into every room, allow the building to speak with nature.” An essential part of our brief was to ensure a reduced requirement on the water and electricity grid. Water storage is positioned underneath the garage and allows the building to capture 80% of its surface rainfall, creating its own life cycle to benefit its inhabitant’s water use. Gas is being used to heat water and for the built in stoves, solar for LED lighting and a planned backup generator for the whole complex. The pool pavilion and residents club sits horizontally strong within the sites contours intertwining nature from all sides. The idea was to create a space that allows nature to punch through its form to provide a social shelter to its users.

LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS
FEEL THE LO
Do you ever wonder what happened to that fun loving, best friend you married all those years ago?
T
he two of you would talk all night long and you couldn’t keep your hands off one another. You were so excited to spend the rest of your lives together. What could be better than waking up next to your favourite person every single day! So you go ahead, plan your wedding, savour the honeymoon and now here you are, coupled up and happily married. Or are you? You’re waking up together, for sure, but that’s now ALL you get to do together. Real life has taken over; chores, work, kids, dog, the list goes on! Marriage humbles us. What could be so hard about living with your best friend? The answer is A LOT. When you decide to share your living space, your finances and your families, there are countless challenges. Both of you unintentionally bring your expectations and baggage from
52
your past, and then try to negotiate differences that you didn’t even know you had. Life is one thing after the next and when anxiety levels spike, we humans tend to fall back into default mode. Our automatic tendency toward fight or flight is hard-wired and marriage absorbs anxiety like a magnet. There’s nothing more disheartening than when you’re both struggling to “get” one another and you’re stuck between conflict (fight) and distance (flight). So, what happens now? We all know that the honeymoon period in a marriage can’t last forever, but does that mean that we can’t “live happily ever after?” Absolutely not! If you learn the right skills, and then practice them every single day, your marriage has an excellent chance of success. It’s as simple as that. The first step is to recognize that you are stuck. Perhaps you feel
resentful and unappreciated. You’ve tried talking about it, but it’s not working. Your partner gets defensive. You move round in circles, doing the same thing, with the same response. This is a red light! It is a warning sign that says something needs to change. Stop, take stock and remind yourself what really matters in your life. What is it that you truly want? If you are anything like the rest of us, it is probably the simple things in life, like love and happiness that you long for at the end of the day. The arguing is a protest because one or both of you don’t feel loved. The protest can be transformed into an opportunity to reconnect. Love is worth pursuing. It is a powerful, uplifting emotion that we feel within us and between us. Rumi, the famous Sufi poet wrote “Love is the bridge between you and everything”. So here is the good news: wherever your
relationship is right now, if you are willing, you can choose love. Where attention goes, energy flows. It is possible to fall in love all over again, if you intentionally cultivate and grow a loving relationship.
“To build a loving marriage you will need to be kind and generous, focus on yourself (not just the other), try bold acts of change & practice” This is a big ask, I know! Why should you be kind, focus on yourself, and make changes when your partner is the one to blame? This is our ego talking and the first trap we all fall into. Get over it. It always takes two to tango. The only person you can change is yourself. So, this is about being brave enough to change your steps in the relationship dance and stay open to wherever this takes you.
VE BELINDA'S TOP 5 SKILLS TO BUILD HEALTHY, LOVING RELATIONSHIPS
Warm it up Nothing grows in a chilly, barren climate, let alone love. You and your partner have created a unique space between you. You are both responsible for what you put into that space. If that space is filled with criticism, blame and judgment, it will feel cold and uninviting. Neither of you will want to visit it. If however, that space is filled with love, appreciation and kindness, it will feel warm, welcoming and safe. Marriage expert & researcher, John Gottman found that in successful marriages there is a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions. So for every criticism, it takes 5 affirmations to counteract that negativity. In the early stages of a relationship, it is easy to focus on the positive. You are in love! But the longer you stay together, the more your selective attention flips and before you know it, you’re focusing on the bad and ignoring the good. Call it human nature, call it entropy, it exists. Turn down the criticism, practice positivity and warm things up. Pause and think, before you speak Often we are careless with the way we speak to one another. We say things without thinking about how we say them. We get lazy. Unfiltered opinions and “truths” can diminish and shame another person, making them defensive and unable to hear what you have to say. Make wise and thoughtful decisions about how and when you speak to your partner, especially if you have something important to say. No “name calling” or character assassinations! Timing and tact make honest, constructive conversation possible. Practice a lighter touch as you become more mindful about the way you are communicating. Look underneath behaviour to identify feelings 9 times out of 10 people are scared, ashamed or vulnerable rather than simply “an a**hole”. Who is that person you fell in love with, underneath their survival suit? We all erect defences and barriers to protect ourselves in the face of danger. These coping mechanisms conceal our true feelings. Tantrums and bad behaviour are often just a mask for how we really feel. When your partner throws their toys out the cot, they may simply be asking “do you still love me”, “am I good enough?” Try to identify the underlying feelings, rather than judging the behaviour, so you can speak to the softer part of your loved one and give them the reassurance they are seeking.
Balance the energy between you Have you ever noticed that as you move towards your partner, they move away, or when you distance yourself, they come forward? When stress spirals, if you are a “Pursuer”, you will seek comfort from your loved one. Your partner may then feel smothered and move away, increasing your need for closeness. If however you are a “Distancer”, you will withdraw when the going gets tough and your partner becomes more anxious. They will invariably move closer. It’s the law of physics. Try to balance that energy and appreciate that you both have different ways of managing emotional intensity. Pursuers, practice focusing on your own goals (not your partner) and call off the chase. Distancers, practice focusing on your partner, (not just your own goals) and intentionally move closer. Repair attempts Conflict can be a valuable opportunity for learning and growth in your relationship, particularly if you can diffuse the disagreement before it escalates. Repair attempts are an important predictor of happy marriages. Its not about the rupture, its about the repair! Repair attempts can take the form of a request “I want to talk about this, but I need to take a break”, an apology “I’m sorry that came out wrong, lets try again”, a gesture, for example a hug, or even something silly like sticking out your tongue or a striking a funny pose. Get creative and keep practicing; whatever works! Finally You don’t need to be an exceptional couple to learn and practice these skills. Any couple, with an open and willing attitude can do it! Relationships change and shift all the time. Your marriage is an adventure to embrace. The downside is that there are no guarantees. But, there are upsides too. If you are brave enough to practice even one of these skills on an ongoing basis, you have an excellent chance of building that loving and fulfilling relationship that you both truly deserve.

Heading to the coast to get married? We researched two local wedding venues, one right on the beach and the other a short drive inland through rolling sugar cane hills. Whichever your preference, these two certainly pull out all the stops to make your wedding a fabulous occasion. riving up to meet with Rain Farm Marketing Manager, Leonie Jameson and Wedding/Events Co-orinator, Maruschka Horn, I was struck by the serene beauty of the inland setting. Just 15min from Ballito, this game farm and lodge offers the perfect setting for a bush wedding. The farm has been owned by the Nidd family for the past 20 years and was rehabilitated from sugar cane to natural bush, the goal to shape an outstanding game farm and lodge has been successfully undertaken by father and daughter team, Douglas and Cara Nidd. Open to the public for 6 years, the scenic venue has grown into a favourite wedding venue for locals and visitors alike. "It is a great opportunity for us to give our guests a different experience. Our international visitors love the bush feel with the convenience of the coast nearby", says Leonie.

Umdloti is nestled between Umhlanga and Ballito and is a certified coastal conservancy, surrounded by fields of sugar cane and indigenous forests.
I
t’s not just the 5km stretch of beautiful beaches that causes visitors to flock to Umdloti, but also the very likely possibility of seeing dolphins playing in the waves that attracts many to this beach. Well known amongst locals and regular visitors for the dolphins that swim in shallow waters every morning. "They playfully peep out of the water as
they glide in the surf close to the shore in impressive schools. It is estimated that there is about 800 resident dolphins in the area which can grow to 15,000 during the sardine season in July and August."
Between July and November, the calving season for whales, Humpbacks and Southern Right whales are also frequently spotted on the sandy coast. A whale register is being maintained on www.umdloti.org where you can register your sighting and upload your photo.
There are three beautiful beaches in Umdloti, namely Newsel Beach, Selection Beach, and Umdloti Beach. These beaches are fabulous for swimming, snorkelling, SUP-ping (Stand-Up Paddling), surfing, and beach sports that make use of the untouched sandy shores.
Umdloti is also home to a wide variety of interesting restaurants ranging from Italian to Portuguese to Indian cuisine.
Various stunning reefs can be explored by snorkelling enthusiasts such as Selection Reef – South Beach and Rivermouth Reef (off the Umdloti river mouth), the tidal pool area and just inshore of the shark nets. Walking 2km south along the beach, also leads to a rocky point from which a reef runs.
Umdloti Beach features a gorgeous natural tidal pool which is safe for kids of all ages to play and swim in and at low tide you will be able to see little fish and ocean life in the rock pools.
DISCOVER UMDLOTI
In the vicinity of Umdloti, is Mount Moreland, home to approximately 3 million barn swallows. For all the bird lovers out there, the best viewing months for these swallows that return to our coast in October, is during November and March. Barn Swallows arriving a half an hour before sunset, coming home to roost for the night, has become a worldwide attraction and recognized as a Natural Wonder and Global Treasure. ESTATE UPDATES AF Planning have been commissioned to work on a new, updated spatial development plan for part of our coastal area. With the amount of new developments and detail on this plan, there was unfortunately insufficient space to include the layout in this issue of Luxe but this will be included in the July issue. It is truly exciting to be part of the amazing development that is taking place in this area. It is not easy to find another area to match the amount of development taking place here.

hen we invest, we ultimately hope to achieve satisfactory returns on capital. But how do we know what satisfactory is? One way to measure this is by considering the alpha of an investment. But when we look at alpha, we need to look beyond pure market performance. Advisers, by guiding clients through a tailored and well considered advisory process, can help to achieve this performance – and ultimately contribute to increased alpha.
adviser and trust the adviser to keep their best interests at heart. As an adviser, the key to client retention is keeping that trust.
Alpha considers the return an investment achieves in context of the risk taken to do so. For instance, alpha considers the volatility of a unit trust, and compares its performance to a benchmark index with the same volatility. The excess return of the unit trust relative to the benchmark is its alpha. This results primarily from successful investment management but it is also achieved through quality advice.
A financial plan promotes complete disclosure on investors’ portfolios. More importantly, it enables investors to share what is of most concern to them: their goals, feelings about risk, family matters and charitable interests. Sharing this information is crucial to building trust and deepening the advisory relationship. It also helps to identify opportunities to generate alpha by adding additional value.
The value of advice is changing Investors expect to be treated fairly by their

The financial advice industry continues to gravitate toward fee-based advice, which means there’s increasing pressure to define the value of advice. For investors without the time, willingness or ability to handle their own financial matters, an adviser may simply offer peace of mind. But advisers can offer far more value.
access to a wide spread of information to determine the most suitable products and funds for their clients’ needs and objectives. They also know what features and benefits to look for in specific products, and where to find these products at competitive prices. Un- or ill-advised clients often get trapped in products with fixed term commitments and massive exit penalties. Navigating the complexity of investing Although advisers choose investment strategies for their clients, they cannot control performance. However, performance remains important to investors. Even in an established advisory relationship, periods of significant underperformance can undermine trust. Being able to avoid or mitigate underperformance gives the adviser another opportunity to generate alpha. Advisers know how important it is to stay the course during a bear market, or to rebalance when markets are overvalued – even when it doesn’t feel like the right thing to do. Countless studies have revealed the positive impact of this on clients’ wealth creation. Investors who are too confident in their ability to predict investment outcomes are often underdiversified and more susceptible to volatility. They may end up taking more risks, and trading too often. Investors may also place too much focus on past performance. Past decisions are used to make future decisions, until one day their formula no longer works. Adviser alpha can make a significant difference Advisers add real value by structuring an investor’s investment plan and actively managing their portfolio to achieve their objectives. The challenge and opportunity is defining this value, and communicating it clearly to clients.

V
arious art forms in modern times have melted together making it deliciously difficult to distinguish one from the other. If you have attended any of the arts festivals across our country you will know what I mean: dance is mixed with physical theatre is mixed with multi-media is mixed with live painting and installations…all in one production. I think I have always known that there is no real division between the arts. They are all interconnected. And by arts I mean the traditional ones: dance, music, theatre, painting, sculpture and poetry. Truth be told I think all children inherently know this before they unlearn it from adults who have the desire to box and create names for seemingly everything. The realization came to me on a swing that my Dad made for us when we were little. I would spend many hours there, holding on to the chains that suspended the worn, wooden seats. Legs out with my head right back and over, hair touching the ground as I swung, that’s where I learnt to sing. That’s also where I composed my first lyrics. In retrospect, I think the movement of the swing created the rhythm which beguiled my shy voice, which formed the random words that magically became boisterous lyrics.
ART SCENE Artist TAY DALL with her work titled "Time not linear" 63
The branches danced with dappled light (delight?) as I threw my head right back gazing up into the tree whilst swinging. The movement, light, sound and visual imagery melted together to create a single, sublime experience. I think a little of this ‘feel’ is what we adults try to achieve in our homes, no matter how grand or modest our actual houses are. We have a need to express who we are by the things we surround ourselves with.
Artist CARL ROBERTS with his work titled “Kraken”
“We do this by our choice of paintings, arranging fresh flowers (or fake – eek!), placing sculptures, the music we play, the books we leave on our coffee tables - things that speak directly to us become the whispered messages that we would have our visitors hear and see.” It really is as simple as that. Our homes reflect who we are – so for heaven’s sake let’s be honest. Buy a piece of art because you love it or because it speaks to you and expresses a little of who you are as a person. Rather save up and buy that one big piece that makes your heart soar than settle for scattered copies. Not for other’s but for you. I asked two well known and established, full time artists, how their chosen art form expresses who they are.
ART IS AN
EXPRESSION
A witty, highly intelligent and talented sculptor CARL ROBERTS works in an array of mediums including wood, driftwood, scrap bronze and bone. Roberts, originally a ‘reluctant’ student, achieved his Masters in Fine art despite not passing matric! He presently resides and sculpts from his studio in Hillcrest, KZN. Exhibiting across South Africa and abroad, Roberts accepts commissions and works from exquisite hand-held pieces to larger than life-size- works. Carl, would you agree that your art is an expression of yourself and in what way? Yes, I absolutely agree. But the funny thing is I’m not necessarily aware of what I’m doing always. There is something in your subconscious that is kind of hidden but if you allow yourself to ‘play’ and don’t actually ‘try’ too hard, the work evolves on its own. For example I had a beautiful piece of wood awhile ago which I loved but really didn’t know what to do with. So I propped it up and waited. Then it suddenly came to me: there she was: a woman with a bulging belly asking me to let her out. Obviously my works are not ‘literally’ me but in some way are indeed autobiographical. They wheedle their way out of my subconscious while I’m not looking. When I got married I made a chicken on top of a dog and called it “Is this a duck or a chicken on my back?” Reservations about marriage perhaps?!
“Low Hanging Fruit Fit” 64
Often, years later, I figure out why a particular piece came out of me. Like the ink blot test, the material often suggests
images that sometimes present themselves in an unusual way. The image made depends ultimately upon what lies in the subconscious mixed in with elements of chance and the spirit of the times. Why did you choose sculpture as your art form and profession? Well, quite frankly I never really chose it. I have a love for writing and words so I went to Rhodes to study journalism…well to be honest to drink beer and socialize too. I ended up taking art as an extra subject and much to my surprise found it to be incredibly exciting and really interesting – who’d have thought?! I couldn’t decide between painting or sculpture as my major so my Professor at the time suggested trying both. I started on sculpture in my second year and have never stopped. I guess I was just naïve but I never really thought that one could make a living out of art. In fact I didn’t think I would even cope at Rhodes never mind make a living out of what I learnt there. Turns out I was not as stupid as I thought and that others who went were not all genii. To my surprise I ended
up with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art and won the prize for being the top art student. I lectured for quite some time too. I burnt their kiln down once and it was really exciting to build it back up with my students. University was a great place to be. I live a very privileged life I realize now. I do what I want to do and people buy what I make – what an honour. Hopefully they acquire my work because it speaks to them in some way. Your chosen method of sculpting is more carving than modelling – why is this? Yes, I’m definitely more of a carver. In fact when I work in clay or bronze, I end up building it up then grinding and whittling away at it until it works. It is really all about the medium for me. There are certain qualities in the materials that you are not able to change and in fact one doesn’t want to change. This helps me build onto it and work with the material so that it becomes what it must be. To be honest I think you see into the medium what is really inside of you. What inspires you to make your next piece? Ideas bring on ideas. While I’m busy on a piece of sculpture I end up thinking about what is possible in the next piece and the next. So I usually have about three or four pieces on the go simultaneously. I love that about the mediums I use - they are filled with ideas and potential.
OF WHO WE ARE
Do you have your own work and/or other Artists’ work in your home? Ah yes, I have a collection of my own works. The ones I keep are the ones that are directly linked to what has happened in my life. I have one of me walking up a hill with a little boy on my shoulders – it’s called “Monkey business”. Another from when my daughter, Lily, was born. I think it would be really grand for my kids to have them one day. And yes, I have other artists work in our home too – perhaps my favourite being a painting by Hussein Salim. What would you do if you weren’t a sculptor? Well I’ve been a fireman, a heavy truck driver, worked in a dairy, lectured art – so I think I’ve pretty much covered all bases – best I stick with what I’m doing!
Isabel Roos & Barbie Meyer
Imbizo Gallery - fine art consultants providing a one-stop service to private and corporate clients – a complete art experience from sourcing and commissioning to framing and hanging of art.
CARL, Chair and Star
With a wide selection of abstract, contemporary, landscape, seascape, nude, tribal, wildlife and photographic art on offer, there is something to suit every taste and requirement. Works by well known, as well as young, up coming artists are available. The gallery also stocks sculptures, designer and ethnic jewellery, ceramics, glass and functional art.
Tay Dall's “New Riverflow”
A self confessed procrastinator and night owl, TAY DALL is a passionate painter and an effervescent delight to chat to. Dall studied at Michaelis School of Art, spent eleven years working and exhibiting her work in Los Angeles before she and her husband (and business partner), Ben Chowney, moved back to South Africa.
Tay, would you agree that your art is an expression of yourself and in what way? Undoubtedly my art is an expression of myself. I really paint for the purest pleasure of just creating, for the free flow of subconscious thought – a need to escape.
Dall exhibits and sells her work worldwide and admits how wonderful it is that her biggest problem is keeping up with the creation of her works. Dall presently lives and works in Hermanus in the Western Cape.
But yes, no matter what I paint my energy will always come through – there is no way one can separate oneself from your work. I express many feelings through line and colour and hope that the resulting visual atmosphere will touch the onlooker emotionally.
Mostly, my art expresses a balance of what is within me, my subconscious, with what is outside of me, my environment. Art is so subjective; a particular piece may not have the same effect on everyone. For instance one person may find a painting politically charged and angry whilst another may find it fiery and passionate. That’s what I love about abstract art.
Why did you choose painting as your art form and profession? I guess I have always been an artist. I remember I wasn’t terribly good at languages and when I had to choose a main subject at school, my
Mom suggested art because I painted Easter eggs rather well! And there were some pivotal moments at school, like when my art teacher singled my work out and told the class “This is what I want – I want to feel what you’re feeling”. Amazing what a confidence boost that was. And my Father had some really good advice too, he said: “Do what you love and you’ll be good at it.” And I have to say that I don’t do this alone. Ben my husband and business partner works with me on every level. He keeps me completely grounded, on track and focused. It is priceless to have someone who really has your back and believes in you. Nothing is impossible with that kind of support. With his help I have become one of SA’s top earning artists. Look, I’m not driving around in Posches sipping bubbly all day but we live comfortably and love what we’re doing. Tay I have to ask you this plebeian question – you’re an abstract painter but can you actually draw?! I’m so glad you asked that (she laughs). I can quite honestly answer with a big yes. Thanks to Michaelis School of Art for a start, drawing is in fact one of my strengths. My early works were rather surreal and Salvador Dali-ish and for that one has to be precise.
Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what's inside you, to make your soul grow.” Kurt Vonnegut 66
“The Divide B”
And in the past I have drawn anatomical illustrations for my Father who was a surgeon. I drew finely detailed pencil works showing minute bones and muscles. These were used in my Father’s articles in the prestigious British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery… so yes I can draw! What inspires you to paint your next piece? My husband getting me to focus! But seriously, the entire world around me spurs me on to paint; organic things mostly inspire my colours and shapes. And I think I’m simply at my best when I’m painting. I can be busy with admin work or driving and all I really want to be doing is getting lost in front of my canvas or whatever surface it is that I am painting. I don’t need a lot of encouraging. I paint way into the night and in fact often need coaxing out of the studio. I seem to have an inherent need to escape the confines of law and order – painting solves this for me. Do you have your own work and/or other Artists’ work in your home? Well that’s an easy one, every nook and cranny in our home is filled with my work - all drying! It’s crazy because our house is not small and yet I constantly run out of wall space. Our home constantly looks different as I am changing the paintings around every other day. Above our bed is a dark blue painting which my husband says I’ve cursed (giggles). I have re-worked it a couple of
“Unfolding Anew”
“Papervine Series”
times and it has just got darker and darker but I love it as it reflects a certain period of my life, so I think we’re stuck with it for a bit. I am passionate about other artists work and would love to own a gorgeous collection one day. Presently I do have a couple of pieces that my talented sisters have given to me which I love. What would you do if you weren’t an artist? My head says that I would probably be in the medical field, or psychology, or perhaps even counselling or caring for abused people or animals. But then I probably wouldn’t be able to take the heartache. My heart however screams music. I always have music blaring when I paint – fortunately my son continually makes me new play lists so that I don’t stagnate! When I was very young I used to absolutely love singing and sang solo pieces in junior school. I would sing out loud in the bath and my sisters would put their fingers in their ears and ask me in no uncertain terms to stop. So I did. 67
THE TREE OF LIFE Magnificent Baobab Text Uys & White Landscape Architects | Photography Eko Photographic | Location Izinga Ridge
Steeped in a wealth of mystique, legend and superstition wherever it occurs in Africa, the baobab tree's spectacular persona captured the attention of Uys and White Landscape Architects and inspired them to design and construct a stylized, metal sculpture.
T
he metal tree is part of the road landscape at the prestigious Izinga, Residential Estate, developed by Tongaat Properties. The sculpture creates interest in the landscape and also becomes a landmark for the Estate. This Baobab sculpture was inspired by an imposing giant that dominates the landscape on the farm “Ratho”, in the Limpopo river valley.
Designed and modelled by Lucas Uys and the team (Bianca Heath, Ignes de Beer and Gill Higgins) from Uys and White Landscape Architects KwaZulu Natal, this baobab sculpture is the first of a series of iconic African tree sculptures that the company is working on. In African tradition, Baobabs have become a point of arrival where the community waits to be announced to the N’kosi.

The Bushmen believed that the tree has aggravated the gods and that after it had been thrown out of heaven, it landed upside down!”
68
The Baobab is one of the most iconic trees with specimens reaching ages in excess of 2,000 years. Throughout Africa, Baobabs change in character to suit their environments but never the less, it always is that truly unmistakable monument of African character. It’s imposing size and almost mystical qualities have over the years inspired many myths and folklore. Just as the tree captures our imagination as people it also caters for the animal kingdom and creates a habitat for a range of animals,
birds and insects. The seeds are rich in protein, calcium, oil and phosphates they can also be roasted and ground like coffee beans. The flowers are pure white and big, pollinated by bats and also attract bush babies. Elephants, monkeys and baboons depend on its fruit.
and rituals. It is also brewed into beer and tea. Manufactured by Earl Moller and Tim Wilford from EFM Engineering, the Baobab sculpture is 8m tall fabricated from Aluminium (AL-Mg) Wrought Alloy and weighs approximately two tons.
The vitamin C content of one fruit is the equivalent to that of 4 oranges. The bark is eaten by elephants while people weave it into textiles used in traditional crafts

In fact research has proven that people who have accountability to others, and thus have social support, are more successful in terms of initial weight loss as well as weight loss maintenance[1].
Step 2: Focus on Your Food Life is so incredibly busy, often we cannot remember what we ate 10 minutes ago. We wolf down our
meals distracted by social media, television, or thoughts of our impending meeting. In a review of 24 studies, researchers observed that the level of distraction during eating influences immediate intake, resulting in increased energy intake. However, they found that distraction during meal times has an even greater effect on later consumption (i.e. as the day goes on)[2]. Step 3: Chew Your Food You have heard this probably a thousand times, because it is true. On average you should chew each mouthful 30 times! How many of us can say that we actually do this? In a systematic review and meta-analysis, the evidence suggested that chewing slower and for a longer period of time resulted in decreased food intake, and decreased hunger later on in the day[3]. Step 4: Assess Your Digestion We know there is no “one-size-fitsall” diet. Every one of us is different in our responses to food intake manipulation, and we need to listen to our bodies to establish which approach best suits us. For just one week I highly recommend keeping a targeted food diary taking special note of the following: •
Nutrition: What did you eat? What was your hunger level
•
•
before each meal? How did you feel 15 minutes afterward? Ideally, you should feel hungry but not famished before each meal, and energized within 15 minutes of finishing. Feeling like you need to nap post-meal is a sign you are not getting in the right nutrients. Hydration. How much did you drink, and how thirsty (or not) did you feel? You should never feel parched, and should be drinking enough to go to the loo 4 – 8 times daily. Your urine should be light strawcoloured and not clear (which can mean over-hydration), and not too dark (which signals dehydration). Elimination. How often did you go to the loo? Everyone’s digestion is different, but you should ideally have 1-2 bowel movements per day, and not feel particularly gassy or bloated. You will notice certain foods that you can eat daily, without experiencing digestive issues. The foods that make you feel sluggish, bloated, constipated or tired are not suitable for you.
Step 5: Be More Mindful We can all probably attest our waistline to one or two bad habits that we cannot seem to shake. It might be that 10am craving for a biscuit with your coffee, or the 5pm
craving for a salty snack to tie you over until dinner. Figure out the cue for this habit. When you crave the chips, is it due to hunger? Boredom? Feeling like you need a break from work? Almost all cues that prompt habits fall into one of five categories: 1) Location (working at a desk, sitting on the couch), 2) Time (3 o’clock slump), 3) Emotional state (sad, bored, stressed), 4) Other people (friends, partners, co-workers), 5) and the Action that immediately preceded the urge (finished a task). When your bad-habit urge hits, write down what’s happening in these five areas (perhaps in your trusty food diary). After three days, it should be clear what’s triggering your habitual response. Final Thoughts How we eat can really influence our weight, and increasing our mindfulness when it comes to mealtimes is essential. Over and above that, free yourself up from overly-restrictive food patterns and focus on enjoying real food (i.e. foods that are the ingredients rather than foods that have ingredients). Get to know your own system so that when it comes to food choices, they will be educated decisions rather than those driven by the latest diet trends.

This is the ultimate Hawaan home. Situated on the highest point on the estate, the home has sweeping views over the estate, the forest, and the sea with rows of ships waiting to dock in the harbour.
L
ooking north, the sugar cane hills surrounding Sibaya Casino Palace come into view. Towards the south, one can see the new tall buildings in Umhlanga and on a clear day, across the sea to the Bluff. From the home at night the twinkling lights of Sibaya, the ships out to sea all lit up, the busy bright buzz of Umhlanga and the far glow of Durban and the Bluff, gives a feeling of being in the centre of the Universe. Being high and unobstructed, the home has the full benefit of the cool Hawaan, the Indian name for a breeze that blows off the sea, after which the coastal dry forest is named. Because of that breeze, many of the homes in the estate do not have the need for air conditioning in entertaining areas.
“The owners of this home not only chose probably the best site on Hawaan to build on, but created the ultimate family home.
STYLISHLY HAWAAN Text Tessa Douglas | Photography Chris Allan Photography | Location Hawaan Forest Estate
As an agent, one so often walks into a home on show that looks like it has never lived or breathed, the homes feel sad and sterile. This home, though only 8 years old, has a wonderful feel of a well loved home that has had a warm and loving family. The owners now sadly feel that it is time to downsize as the children have left home. This is a home that really has it all. The entrance from the forecourt is across a little bridge over a Koi pond and this sets the scene for an exciting viewing. The entertainment area is vast and is the heart of the house. It encompasses a first class, state of the art kitchen, surrounded by a spacious dining area, a formal lounge and a large seamless glassed patio, all looking out to sea.
All the glass doors fold right back, so that on balmy days the patio becomes an al fresco living space. Alongside this is the entertainment area, a red lit funky bar, a jacuzzi and a pool table that all open out to the long slim, elegant pool. Up floating stairs are 5 bedrooms, bathrooms and a cozy upstairs TV room/ study. The secret strength of this home is the ample garage and storage space. A double garage opens off the kitchen and a multi purpose, open basement garage which is able to take up to 8 vehicles is the final touch for a home that has it all.
Four of the five bedrooms, all with decks, are sea facing with the most fantastic 180 degree views of the ocean fringed by the various greens of indigenous forest trees. Tranquil bathrooms, equipped with walk-in showers, his and hers basin and free-standing baths make for relaxed spaces.
Masterful design and modern luxury are uniquely embodied in this home. Sleek lines, particularly in the fully fitted kitchen, melds all the function and convenience of modern living making entertaining a breeze.

PRESS CLUB The Press Club is a restaurant steeped in history. Started by Selwyn Sklarchik in 1982, it was sandwiched in Durban between the Daily News and the Mercury. This unique position lent itself to the name. The original Press Club was frequented by book makers, journalists and lawyers and became very popular for a quick meal during lunch or business meetings. Brett shared his fathers passion for this industry and started as a waiter at the age of 16 at Circus Circus in Musgrave Centre. The duo formed a partnership and opened the very popular Oscars in Essenwood Road, followed by another two Oscars restaurants in Durban North and Hillcrest. In August 2013, they opened Press Club Umhlanga, where the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant make one feel right at home. The interior is stylish with photos and prints lining the walls. There is a small section of wall covered in newsprint – an ode to the original restaurant perhaps? This was followed by two concept stores, one in Gateway Private Hospital and the other at Umhlanga College. Brett has essentially taken over the day-to-day running of these restaurants, but his dad is still very much involved, and loves coming in and chatting with all the regulars. Brett is excited by the idea of expanding northwards and is looking at various opportunities for further concept stores in schools and hospitals. “Loyal staff and excellent managers have made us a close knit family. Mpilo Gumede has been working with my family for the past 40 years” says Brett The Press Club not only does the concept store at Umhlanga College, but is also responsible for the tuck shop food where they are offering students healthy options which are very important in our “quick fix” society. The menu offers café/bistro style meals with breakfast, light lunches and dinners daily.

LEGAL CORNER
Rules: Home Owners & Buyers Beware
O
n the 4th February 2016, judgement was handed down by the KwaZuluNatal High Court in a matter in which the High Court was called upon to determine whether certain Conduct Rules of a large residential estate North of Durban were unlawful and of no force or effect. The particular Conduct Rules in question were those ordinarily found in many residential estates namely rules: (1) obliging members to use only contractors accredited by the Homeowners Association to carry out building and other works on the Estate, (2) entitling the Home Owners Association to fine members for travelling on the estate road in excess of

the speed prescribed by the Home Owners Association and (3) restricting the hours of employment of domestic employees of residents and purporting to restrict the rights of domestics to traverse the road network within the Estate. None of those Rules were found by the Court to be unreasonable or unlawful. The same Estate was also fairly recently involved in a High Court challenge regarding a St Bernard dog which the Home Owners Association had refused permission for a resident to keep on the Estate because the size of the dog breached the Estates pet rules. In both cases the High Court confirmed the view that the
relationship between a Home Owners Association and its members is of a contractual nature and that members “have contractually bound themselves to live within a controlled environment. When buying into an Estate or Sectional Title Complex it is accordingly very important that home owners and buyers familiarise themselves fully with all of the applicable Rules or take legal advice thereon as you cannot later be heard to cry foul and seek to escape the consequences of noncompliance, which in most instances will entail at least a fine or penalty and in extreme cases of non-compliance even possibly a court application by the Home Owners Association to seek compliance.
Note to Readers: Application for Leave to Appeal has recently been delivered in the first mentioned case challenging the listed rules and it remains to be seen whether leave to appeal will be granted in due course.
The purpose of this section of LUXE Magazine is to highlight practical legal information relevant to estate living. For more information please contact the authors.

eople often ask what the best way to own property or a business is. The answer will invariably depend on the circumstances relating to the purchase including how many people are involved and what their intentions are.
Owning property as an individual or running a business as a sole proprietor is common and comes with many advantages. There are though instances which suite the use of alternate ownership methods such as a partnership, a company or a trust.

T
he new Swaziland branch opened on 1 April 2016 and ground breaking on their exciting new building and natural stone showroom in Ballito is scheduled for this year.
Owners Eugen, Lila and Gisela von Maltitz attribute the growth to the creative design and the artisanship of their stone masons as well as their outstanding sales and management team. The current showroom is testament to their relentless drive to incorporate the best materials and provide outstanding service. Continuously adding new products and designs to their portfolio with a focus on their sourcing of stone from South Africa and the African continent. New products include African Teak parquet and solid wood flooring from Zimbabwe, granite cobbles from Angola, Glitter stone from Zambia, Marble and limestone tiles from Egypt all find place amongst their signature local stone.
NATURAL STONE
2016 is shaping up to be one exciting year for the work of design and especially for the lovers of natural stone! The Sandstone Story design team give their predictions. The trend is for more organic and free form stonework, bringing the mountain to your home on the exterior whilst ultra-slick stonework is being used on the interior walls.
TEXTURE
Layering with colour was a trend in 2015. In 2016, sophisticated design will be all about adding texture. People will be using natural stone in fresh ways. Stone combinations are big news. Combine silver slate with hand tooled creamy sandstone. Combine marble with slate or polished stone with rough textured stone. Hand prepared and packed ultra-thin slate layers combine with travertine and wood makes for winning design. Because natural stone comes in neutral colours, it can practically go with any colour scheme that you want. No matter the colour palette you choose, you can find a natural stone colour that will complement it. Sandstone and Quartzite varies in colour from beige's, to browns and reds, to whites, to greys, to greens and golds and more.
