MAG Utrecht — Sep/Oct 2018
Welcome to Utrecht From September, Museum Speelklok (and practically the entire city) will be under the spell of musical robots. As well as imitating human movement, many of the robots can compose music and even improvise. You can even operate a few of the robots yourself! Another great exhibition is Climate Planet, an enormous globe standing on the Jaarbeursplein from October, where you will find out what you can do to help create a better world. But a late-summer day is also perfect for heading out of town: take a bike ride through the area around Utrecht, which is bursting with old stone-built forts, wooden houses and green walls concealing a rich history. And why not end your day with a fabulous meal without animal products in one of the city’s vegan hotspots?
Utrecht Central Station
MAG Utrecht helps you discover everything the city has to offer, whether you’re in the heart of the city or in one of the suburbs. It also features a calendar with up-to-date information on the festivals, theatre, art and music events taking place in the city. Mikaela Davis

The American singersongwriter Mikaela Davis is the living proof that you can play more on a harp than classical music. She graduated from music academy, specialising in the harp, but ended up in the pop industry. Her debut album ‘Delivery’, released in July, shows just how versatile a harp can be. Allemaal Utrechters
Allemaal Utrechters is a series of interviews with people who moved to Utrecht from another country (such as Imane Alhaddadi, see quote). They are asked about their background and their impression of Utrecht, revealing the true diversity of our city. On uitagendautrecht.nl/en/ allemaal-utrechters you can check out the series so far. The aim is to showcase all nationalities in Utrecht, so if you want to be interviewed yourself or know someone else who would like to contribute, please send an email to redactie@duic.nl.
Imane Alhaddadi From Morocco, has been living in Utrecht for years Imane runs SIS Bakery on Willem van Noortstraat with her four sisters, as well as working for Utrecht council as a project assistant. ‘I see being able to combine two different cultures into my life as a privilege. THREE DANCERS CREEP, CRAWL AND PLAY THEIR WAY THROUGH A WORLD OF PAPER
KIDS
Papier
It tears, it crumples and it crackles. You can scrunch it up and fold it: paper. In this show, three dancers creep, crawl and play their way through a world of paper, that scrunches up almost as soon it appears. The paper waves around when they run, tears if they walk through it and shrinks if they cut it. Things that appear strong are actually fragile, and things that seem fragile can be very strong. > 21 and 22 October, Theater Kikker theaterkikker.nl

‘What is the city but the people?’ in Manchester in 2017
Sep/Oct 2018 — MAG Utrecht
THIS YEAR, UTRECHT INTENDS TO MAKE A SPLASH AT THE OPENING OF THE CULTURAL SEASON: ON 15 AND 16 SEPTEMBER, THE CITY WILL LIVE AND BREATHE MUSIC, THEATRE, ART, FILM AND LITERATURE. MAG UTRECHT HELPS YOU FIND YOUR WAY AROUND.
Saturday 15 September
A sixty-metre long mega-catwalk marks the start of the Uitfeest, and the official opening of the new Jaarbeursplein. ‘What’s the city but the people?’, based on a project by British artist Jeremy Deller, is a dynamic self-portrait of the city: 150 Utrechters - from top sportspeople, an ice-cream maker and an informal carer to the local baker - will walk the catwalk accompanied by live music, photos and quotes made by/ about themselves. A lot of cultural institutions are opening their doors to the public. For example, you can visit most galleries and exhibition spaces with a guided tour organised by Art Utrecht. There’s lot to do outside as well: a youth brass orchestra will be playing pop and film music on Stadhuisbrug. And you can also watch a tango demonstration and a pop-up belly dance performance on this location. Do you feel like dancing yourself? Then head to Theaterhuis De Berenkuil for a salsa, lindy hop or street dance workshop. You can also take a peek behind the scenes of numerous creative breeding grounds and hotspots dotted around the city. There’s art

and music in Rotsoord, where music podium De Helling and LE:EN restaurant have joined forces. At various hotspots in the Merwede area, hundreds of creative, inspirational entrepreneurs will show you exactly what they do. On the other side of town, you can visit the studios of artists in the Cartesius area, or go to Lou Oudenoord, a temporary hotspot. The RAUM public square in Leidsche Rijn is packed with art installations depicting the city of tomorrow, and while you’re there, take the kids to Castellum Hoge Woerd where they can have a turn on the merry-go-round or learn an acrobatic trick. If you want to know more about visiting these creative hotspots on other days, check page 36.
Sunday 16 September
This day revolves around art music, theatre, literature and film. Art-lovers can eat their heart out on Neude, where eleven sea containers have been cleverly transformed by galleries and exhibition halls from Utrecht. Work by budding young talent is on display, such as ‘Imagination Arch’, a gateway to the square designed for the occasion by artist Yasser Ballemans. If you prefer buying art, pop into the Art Manifestation on Maliebaan, where local artists will be selling their wares.

KIDS CAN HAVE A TURN ON THE MERRY-GO-ROUND In TivoliVredenburg, the Utrecht Young Jazz Society, a big-band comprising ‘young professionals’, will make its debut, and De Raad van Toezicht, a twelve-strong ensemble with a double rhythm section, a wind section and a violin, makes an appearance with a repertoire of jazz and funk. Book worms can go to the book market or check out the other activities organised by the International Literature Festival Utrecht. You’ll find all kinds of tasters for the forthcoming theatre and dance season in and around Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. Outside, Utrecht
dancers put on a rousing concert that cleverly unfurls into a dance performance, while inside, a battle in a cypher (freestyle dance in a group setting) is raging between the hip-hoppers from the Illusionary Rockaz Company and those from the Underdogz Crew. It’s all about digital media in the Winkel van Sinkel. Fancy shutting yourself off from the world for a bit in Oneseconds’ virtual reality lab? Inspired by stories from Utrecht, they’ve created short but unique experiences to show the city in a different light. Or come and watch A Double Life, the new short animation film directed by Job, Joris & Marieke. Three years ago, their film A Single Life was nominated for an Oscar. culturelezondagen.nl/en

International Literature Festival Utrecht
AFTER PRAGUE, MILAN AND BARCELONA, UTRECHT CAN NOW ALSO CALL ITSELF UNESCO CITY OF LITERATURE. SO IT’S HARDLY SURPRISING THAT THE CITY IS SET TO HOST A TWO-WEEK INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE FESTIVAL FROM 15 TO 29 SEPTEMBER. A FEW TIPS. READING MARATHON A very special reading marathon will start at 11.00 on 15 September at Utrecht Centraal station, during Uitfeest. It’s set to last twelve days! Thousands of women will read aloud from the book Anna Karenina by the Russian author Tolstoy, in Dutch and almost sixty other languages.
ANTIQUE BOOKS Come and browse through stacks of secondhand and antique books on the 120 book stalls at this first edition of the Utrecht Book Fair on Sunday 16 September on Vredenburgplein, during Uitfeest.
GOOD AND EVIL On Friday 19 September, heroes, scoundrels and the struggle between good and evil will be the focus of Humanities Night in TivoliVredenburg. The evening, organised together with the Centre for the Humanities at Utrecht University, will feature minilectures, addresses given by international scientists, debates and a real pub quiz.
AN EVENING WITH Various international writers will visit Utrecht during the festival, among them Julian Barnes and Paolo Cognetti. Barnes has written many books, including The Sense of an Ending, for which he won the Man Booker Prize in 2011. The Italian writer/ documentary maker Cognetti has been writing for years, but his breakthrough came with the novel The Eight Mountains about loneliness and friendship set against the backdrop of the North-Italian Alps. ilfu.nl/en

But I also love the one by the Utrecht illustrator Munir de Vries on the corner of Croeselaan and Van Zijstweg. ‘The Vlinderhof in Máxima park is a fabulous place that doesn’t get enough recognition as far as I’m concerned. It’s a green oasis smack in the middle of Leidsche Rijn district. Not many people know that this park was designed by the world-famous Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf, who also designed the High Line in New York.’
Outside the centre ‘I don’t really have a favourite bar or restaurant, but I do prefer to go outside the city centre for a meal or a drink. The café of music venue dB’s (CAB-Rondom 100) is surprisingly nice; you’ll find mainly locals there. A bit further on, there’s Werkspoorcafé De Leckere (Tractieweg 43) with a great water-side terrace. I like to eat at Jasmijn & Ik (Kanaalstraat 219-221) or De Klub (Europalaan 2B). And as I spent a long time in the Middle-East, I’m delighted to have Juuls Hummus (Baanstraat 1) and Le Comptoir Libanais in Hoog Catharijne within easy reach.’
Top hairdresser ‘Amsterdamsestraatweg definitely is one of the most under-rated streets in Utrecht. I’d advise everyone to zig-zag down this street from the start to Juliana park. A&J Bakery at number 116, for example, makes the most delicious vegan croissants and cinnamon rolls. And the Syrian hairdresser Maher at number 196 coiffed the rich and famous in Syria until he was called up for national service. He fled to Utrecht and started his business. Getting your hair cut in his salon can only be described as an experience!’

ROBOTJE (6+) Robotje is unique, funny and clumsy, almost like a real person. Almost... When Robotje meets a real person, his world is turned upside down. SWEET DEMON
The dance company LeineRoebana bases this production on its greatest source of inspiration: the human body. In Sweet Demon, the dancers put heart, body and soul into a performance of overlapping extremes. It is bursting with contradictions and inuendo, exhaustion and stillness, joy and despair, sense and passion. The dancers exorcise the demons they encounter along the way, lovingly embracing them. There’s an opportunity to meet the dancers, choreographers and musicians half an hour before the show.
Two men find themselves in a sterile, white room, surrounded by everyday objects that seem to have been left casually lying around. Taking great care, they study every object they find - a bucket, a chair, a coat rack - and gradually transform them into an artistically designed, but precarious structure. The two men challenge and provoke each other, asking various members of the audience to intervene. All goes well until the game turns sour and the two men become the target of a violent, dangerous force from outside the constructed reality of the stage. The show illustrates the perverse nature of modern warfare, in which attackers no longer have to look their victims in the eye.

I Am Not a Witch Following an incident in her local village, 8-year old girl Shula is accused of witchcraft. After a short trial she is found guilty, taken into state custody and exiled to a witch camp in the middle of a desert. McQueen
Specially for fashionistas: in late September you’ll have a chance to see a documentary about Alexander McQueen, one of the world’s most famous fashion designers. The fashion world embraced him, but McQueen himself found fame difficult to cope with. This brand-new material includes home video’s, audio fragments and interviews with family and friends, giving a glimpse into the turbulent life of this British fashion designer who died in 2010 at the age of 40. > McQueen will be screened in het Louis Hartlooper Complex from 27 September hartlooper.nl
Journeyman Matty Burton, boxing world champion, leads a happy life with his wife Emma and their daughter Mia. He only has a few fights left before he hangs up his gloves. One of them is the defence of his world title against the controversial Andre Bryte. He wins with gusto, but once home, collapses in a delayed reaction to a devastating punch. When he awakes from his coma, he isn’t the man he used to be. While friends and family leave them to fend for themselves, Matty and Emma do their best to rebuild their life. Easier said than done. > Journeyman will be screened in the Louis Hartlooper Complex from 6 September. hartlooper.nl

ROBOTS LOVE MUSIC From September, Museum Speelklok (and practically the entire city) will be under the spell of musical robots: ancient robots, interactive robots, metal robots, supersonic robots, life-size robots and cupboards with hidden robots. As well as imitating human movement, many of the robots can compose music and even improvise. You can even operate a few of the robots yourself! Besides a life-size eighteenth-century clarinettist, there’s a Beethoven-robot made of LEGO playing the xylophone and a hypermodern robot called Shimon, which plays the marimba. Gil Weinberg, the American who constructed Shimon, will be in Utrecht during the opening week giving lectures and performing on stage with Shimon in TivoliVredenburg on 26 September.

It’s undergone a staggering transformation in recent years: what used to be barren land and empty business premises has become a dynamic district buzzing with creative entrepreneurs and students. Alongside restaurants with waterside terraces, such as De Zagerij 1 (Rotsoord 7A), Het Ketelhuis 2 (Rotsoord 7B) and Camping Ganspoort 3 (Helling 87), and trendy bars such as Taplokaal Gist 4 (Helling 9) and Klein Berlijn 5 (Helling 22), you’ll find studios, exhibition rooms and music podia - such as De Helling - in redeveloped warehouses and factory halls. There’s all sorts going on in the former hangars and factories in the Cartesius area. An old warehouse, offices and a former industrial park on the Nijverheidskade are now home to various Utrecht-based artists from De Nijverheid 6 (Nijverheidskade 15). Further on, near to Utrecht Zuilen train station, you can get a local beer and vegan meal at Oproer 7 (CAB Rondom 90A), go to a concert in dB’s 8 (CAB Rondom 100) or watch a film at the Filmcafé 9 (CAB Rondom 90A). These three concerns joined forces to create the Biergarten: an enormous German-style terrace.

Cycling along the New Dutch Waterline THE AREA AROUND UTRECHT IS BURSTING WITH OLD STONE-BUILT FORTS, WOODEN HOUSES AND GREEN WALLS CONCEALING A RICH HISTORY. SO WHY NOT SPEND A LOVELY LATE-SUMMER DAY BIKING AROUND A FEW OF THESE HIDDEN GEMS. 1
FORT ’T HEMELTJE This is one of the ‘youngest’ forts, built around 1880. It belongs to the second (outer) ring of forts around Utrecht. There’s a lovely path that takes you on a walk through the area around the fort, which is inhabited by numerous birds. > Fortweg 9, Houten
They seem to loom up from nowhere: the forts that go to make up the New Dutch Waterline. The waterbased defence line was started in 1815 to protect the Netherlands from attack by flooding the country until it was kneedeep in water. Although most of the ingenious system of dykes, sluices,
canals, forts and bunkers is invisible, it is certainly worth taking a closer look at this piece of traditional Dutch history. There are several bike trails (available from the VVV tourist information office or online via nieuwehollandsewaterlinie.nl/en), but you can always shorten it or pick out the highlights.

FORT VECHTEN This fort marks the most vulnerable part of the Waterline; a plain that could not be flooded. The fort and Water Line museum are open to the public. > Achterdijk 12, Bunnik fortvechten.nl

Lunet IV is part of a complex comprising four forts built close to the city to close off an area that couldn’t be flooded. Johann Sebastian Bach composed much of his music for special occasions, but sometimes wrote a piece ‘simply’ as a gift. The Count of Brandenburg was one of the lucky recipients. He was presented with a series of six orchestral works, known as the Brandenburg Concertos.
