If you’ve always wanted to take a peek at the green oases hiding behind the city’s numerous hedges, fences and walls, then Sunday 6 September is your chance. For one day only, some 60 Utrecht residents will be throwing open their gates and transforming their gardens into intimate, corona-proof open-air theatres. Come and sit on the cool grass to watch free performances by local talent, from singer-songwriters with golden vocal cords to unexpected theatrical acts. The ‘random walk’

Ideal in times of corona: art with no fixed route, no entrance gates and no opening hours. Luckily, Utrecht has enough to offer in this respect. Such as the mural on Oosterkade, close to Vaartsche Rijn station. This design created by De Strakke Hand artists’ cooperative is an ode to the Utrecht physicist Leonard Ornstein (1880-1941). He and a colleague described the so-called ‘random walk’, in which an object makes a series of random movements. A drunk doesn’t walk in a straight line, for example, but follows a process of randomly stepping forwards, sideways or even backwards. Fate dictates the direction. > on the side of Oosterkade 30

In this free lecture, Philosopher Dr Hanno Sauer (UU) explains why we’re naturally inclined to be pessimistic, and what we can do about it. If you want a day away from the hustle and bustle of the city, there are plenty of pretty, tranquil spots in the region around Utrecht. Take Leersumse Veld, for example, an area of natural beauty located between Leersum and Maarsbergen. It’s one of the quietest spots in the Netherlands. You can follow a six-kilometre trail around the Leersumse Plassen, which takes you along the banks of the lakes, through the woods and across the heathland. Zijdebalen used to be a famous Dutch silk factory set on an illustrious estate. The gardens were pure heaven, with avenues of trees, formal hedges, a maze, a playhouse, ponds and statues. Later, the Lubro bread factory moved into this spot on the Vecht River, but it is now a modern urban development project boasting around 500 houses. This stately building is concealed between the rustling trees and the tranquil bubbling waters of the Vecht. The terrace gives you a view of the river and a field with cows, storks and other birds. To head back to the hustle and bustle of city life, turn your back on the Vecht and head for Amsterdamsestraat weg. You can extend your walk with a quick circuit of Juliana park 5 , the oldest city park in Utrecht. Sit back and enjoy a deckchair on the lawn, but don’t be surprised if a hen steals your place. Hens are free to roam wherever they like in this park. There’s also an animal enclosure with deer, pigs and peacocks. Three alpacas are the latest addition. Afterwards, you can head straight for one of the two local brew pubs for a drink and a bite to eat.

Q&A WITH ULRIKA MENIG By Manon Marijs

What started out as a small sourdough bread enterprise in Ulrika Menig’s kitchen, quickly grew into lunchroom and bakery Bammetje Bakery with a weekly changing and entirely vegan assortment. Added to the sourdough bread are deluxe croissants, tarts, cookies, Dutch saucijzenbroodjes (a.k.a. sausage rolls) and much more. “I initially graduated as a fashion designer and worked for several clothing brands before baking became my fulltime job. I quit fashion because I simply didn’t like what I was doing anymore. What I did like was baking. I already baked loads of goods for friends and family. So starting my own bakery felt very natural in a way.” Bammetje Bakery also offers a baking workshop so you can learn the tricks of the trade yourself. “There are so many misconceptions about bread - it supposedly has too many calories, too much carbs and whatnot. In our workshop, people actually see what sourdough bread consists of and how it’s made, so they can decide for themselves whether it fits their lifestyle.” Luckily, the bakery survived the heydays of the coronavirus crisis. Still, it was a tough time. ‘As a (vegan) baker I obviously have a huge predilection for tasty food and natural ingredients. Koningshof (Koningsweg 135A, koningshof-utrecht. nl) is the place where these two elements fuse together. It’s situated in an old agricultural area at the edge of Utrecht Oost, just a ten minute bike ride from the heart of the city. Koningshof organises a mini market every Saturday, there’s a café and you can rent fruit and vegetable gardens. Me and my friends quite enjoy our own harvests.’

‘I’m very into food and plants. Smulders Kookt (Zevenwouden 216, smulderskookt.nl) is a bit of both, mixed with some girl power. I truly admire owner Shamida, who started this cooking business fuelled by a passion for food. Just two years ago she was operating out of her cargo bike at Jaarbeursplein, and by now she has expanded her business in such a way that she is able to deliver fresh meals at your doorstep. Shamida’s exuberant cooking style is made up of pure ingredients and surprising flavours. She definitely is a huge asset for culinary Utrecht.’

Temporary art ‘My hands are covered in dough almost all of the time, so generally there’s little reason for me to have them manicured or do fancy stuff with my nails. However, when I do have time off and want to treat myself, one of the first things I do is go to The Happy Toko (Twijnstraat 71, thehappytoko.com) to let owner Justine work her magic on my nails. She just recently opened her very pink and bright - nail salon and is able to transform your nails into real pieces of temporary art.’

‘Ever since I was a little girl I was drawn to gardening and developed some serious green thumbs. My parents gave me a tiny plot of land in our backyard and I devoted myself to growing strawberries. The marvel I felt for growing plants has lasted well into my adulthood and the Utrecht Botanic Gardens (Budapestlaan 17, uu.nl/ utrecht-botanic-gardens) give me that same feeling. The gardens, that have existed for over 300 years, teach you a lot about nature as you take a stroll in its beautiful greenery.’

BEHEADED SAINTS

BODY LANGUAGE From wounds shaped like vaginas and wandering beheaded saints, to Mary spraying her breast milk into a fountain in a perfect arch and Jesus being pressed like a grape. Body Language lifts the veil on the intriguing world of art in the Middle Ages. Between 1300 and 1500, artists became increasingly interested in the human side of Jesus, Mary and other saints, and their bodies and body parts took the main stage in their works of art. Empathy also became an important element, as art became an aid to prayer and meditation. But although the paintings, miniatures and sculptures became bloodier, hairier and stranger, this didn’t detract from their beauty. Shortly after Utrecht was granted a city charter in 1122, a start was made on building the city’s fortifications. The defences were adapted several times over the years to make them more effective, until the advent of aviation finally rendered city walls superfluous. The Centraal Museum has a collection of 3D reconstructions, animations, drawings and paintings, mediaeval miniatures, archaeological objects and weapons, which highlight every facet of the Utrecht fortifications until they became redundant around 1830.

STRAATBEELD There are many different types of fairground organ figures: court dancers from the wig era, provocative cheerleaders, exotically dressed gentlemen, fashion from the 1930s, to mention but a few. In their day, organ figures were highly respected and carefully crafted products, which attracted lots of attention standing on an organ front. Some of them refer to bygone times, others represent role models or contentious topical issues. For many decades, they were passed from organ to organ, from street to street. But street music and the streetscape have changed enormously over time. In the new exhibition Straatbeeld (streetscape) you’ll find out how this has affected organ figures. But it also shows work by modern artist Peter Demetz. More than 100 years ago, his namesakes made the most beautiful organ images in Italy. Demetz sees himself in line with this tradition, but his art is formed by lifelike, unpainted wooden images. Raynor and Moth packed their rucksacks with just the bare necessities: a lightweight tent from eBay, two sleeping bags, a cooking stove, a change of clothes and some food. They

aynor and her husband Moth had lost everything – their home, their business and their money –when they decided to walk the South West Coast Path along the English coastline. The path is a staggering 630 miles long – the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest four times. “The week that we were told we had to leave our home, my husband had a hospital appointment. We thought it was going to be a routine check-up. It was anything but. Moth was diagnosed with CBD, a neurodegenerative disease for which there is no treatment and no cure. So not only did we find ourselves facing the prospect of becoming homeless, we were also trying to come to terms with his diagnosis. We had a week to pack up twenty years of our lives. When the bailiffs were knocking on our door, we knew we would never be able to go back. We hid under the stairs, hanging on to that very last moment in what had been our home for the last twenty years. It was in that moment that I saw Five Hundred Miles Walkies in a packing case, a book about a young man who walked the South West Coast Path with his dog. In that awful moment, going for a walk seemed like the most obvious thing to do. So that’s what we did.”

had less than thirty pounds a week to get on and were camping wild. “We started walking with no expectations whatsoever. We were full of bitterness about what had happened, and fear for what the future would hold. Merely following a line on the map gave us a way forward. Over the weeks that followed, there was something about that incredible strip of wilderness that slowly started to change us. It became our home, our safe place. It’s like being trapped between two worlds: the ordinary world on one side and the endless horizon of the sea on the other side. Even though we’d lost everything that formed the structure of our lives, we came to realise that the core connection between us and the natural world couldn’t be broken.” Also, Moth’s health improved dramatically while being on the

British children’s books author and cartoonist Gary Northfield will be interviewed in the Central Library on 30 September, and fifty (inter)national writers, poets, musicians, dramatists and film-makers will make a story for a future world with the publication of 50 Stories for Tomorrow. The underlying motto of these stories is a quote by American author James Baldwin: ‘The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover. path. “We found ourselves on a beach at the end of one of those beautiful, calm summer days. We put the tent up way above the flood line, or so we thought. But when the tide came in early in the morning, it was just a metre away from the tent flap. We had to jump out of the tent, pick the whole thing up and run down the beach holding the tent above our heads. As we put it down on the cliffs, we realised that Moth had just ran over the beach with a rucksack on his back and a fully erected tent held over his head after he’d been struggling to put his coat on without help when we started walking. That shift in his health felt like a miracle. The more I thought about it, the more I started to see the instinctive connection between human health and the natural environment. Our connection to nature can heal in the most remarkable ways, mentally as well as physically. I wanted to elaborate on that further in The Wild Silence.” In her new book, Raynor writes about life beyond The Salt Path. “I found it incredibly difficult to adjust to what we consider a ‘normal’ life, up to a point where we actually put the tent up in the bedroom of our apartment. Until someone who read The Salt Path made us an incredible offer: to

breathe life back into the abandoned Cornish farmhouse he owned. He felt that we were the right people for the job.” It was a huge leap of faith for Raynor and Moth, but they accepted the offer. They’ve been living on the farm for eighteen months now, and nature is already finding its way back. Raynor says the most important thing she’s taken from anything having to do with The Salt Path and The Wild Silence can be summed up by a meeting she had with two old men when walking the South West Coast Path. “It was one of those wet, foggy mornings as we were walking across the headlands when two gentlemen came walking up the path. One of them was fully dressed, the other wore a bathing suit and flip flops. He was carrying a Tupperware box full of blackberries. He offered me one. I didn’t want to take it; up to that point, I’d eaten blackberries that were too tart and too sharp. But I took one, just to be polite. It had the most perfect autumnal flavour. ‘When the mist comes in and puts a layer of salt on perfectly ripe blackberries, you get something that chefs can’t make and money can’t buy: a lightly seasoned blackberry. It’s a gift of time and nature’, the man said. That’s exactly what walking the path was for us: a gift of time and nature. By just allowing ourselves to be in our natural state, we found a way to over come our difficulties and find a way back. I am convinced that this instinctive connection to nature is important to all of us.”

THERE’S STILL SO MUCH MUSIC TO DISCOVER, EVEN IN A ONE-AND-A-HALF-METRE SOCIETY. COME TO THE GAUDEAMUS MUSIC WEEK, FOR INSTANCE, WHICH IS BEING HELD FACE-TO-FACE AND ONLINE FROM 9 TO 13 SEPTEMBER.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Gaudeamus Music Week. Since the very first concert in 1945, the organisation has been supporting new music written and performed by the youngest generation of composers and musicians. Music designed to surprise, amaze, seduce and possibly even disturb you. In this anniversary edition, the organisation is exploring the boundaries between the physical and the virtual worlds. There’s a concert in one of the halls of TivoliVredenburg every evening. Only a select audience will be allowed in, but the concerts will also be livestreamed. In the opening concert on 9 September, the classical ensemble Asko|Schönberg looks back at the past 75 years, with music by composers who have worked closely with Gaudeamus. The Anatomy Building The Veterinary Anatomical Institute, part of the National Veterinary School that used to be based on this site, was designed by Joseph Crouwel in 1918. You’ll see similarities with his most famous design in Utrecht: the former post office on Neude. Crouwel worked with the sculptor H.A. van den Eijnde, who was responsible for the animal heads adorning both the inside and the outside of the building. Leeuwenbergh Hospital This plague house (a refuge for the city’s sick) was built in 1567. The French commandeered it in 1672, turning it into a military hospital. In 1844, it temporarily served as a physics laboratory until the building was taken over by the University’s Faculty of Pharmacology in 1908. Wolvenplein Prison Wolvenplein Prison, built on the Wolvenburg stronghold, dates from 1856. Before this, prisoners were kept in various city gatehouses and towers, such as the Plompetoren. New ideas about punishment, whereby isolation was thought to help criminals to repent, led to new types of prisons with individual cells. Wolvenplein Prison was designed in the shape of a cross by I. Warnsick and the public works engineer J. Fijnje. It was extended in 1877 and finally closed in 2014. The building has had several temporary tenants since. > Wolvenplein 27

Post Utrecht Earlier this year, the former post office on Neude, which has been closed for many years, finally reopened its doors. Architect Joseph Crouwel designed the building in the style of the Amsterdam School. This monumental building, which now houses the library and a number of shops, was built between 1917 and 1924. The impressive, parabola-shaped hall and glazed yellow bricks, adorned with sculptures inspired by Egyptian and Assyrian art, form the main body of the current library.

Fort Lunet I is one of four forts built on the higher section of the New Dutch Waterline (an ingenious defence structure), which could not be flooded. These smaller forts were built in the shape of half-moons (lunet), and together they form a single line of defence. Lunet I (18191821) comprises two so-called flank casemates on the points of the halfmoon. In the late 1930s, another fortified concrete casemate for machine guns and group shelter was added to back up the outdated brick flank casemates. A fallout shelter built during the Cold War was used as a command centre by the Dutch organisation for civil defence.

On Sunday 18 October, all the museums, theatres and other cultural organisations of Leidsche Rijn, the expansive housing estate to the west of Utrecht city centre, will open their doors to the public. For example, De Vrijstaat and CultuurCampus will offer various workshops for kids, local music groups will show their skills in music venue Azotod, there’s a Human Library in the library and Castellum Hoge Woerd will offer guided tours about the Roman past of the district. In addition, the artists of thirty galleries in an old cherry orchard (Ateliers Kersen boomgaard) will be exhibiting their work. You can also head for RAUM on Berlijnplein, the biggest playground for design, art and technology in Utrecht where you’ll find interesting art objects and installations. Afterwards, go for a drink and a bite to eat at the neighbouring Venster, a no-frills local restaurant. BLASPHEMY RAPSODY The swinging Charleston marked the end of a constant, crushing fear that had taken hold during World War I. And the SouthItalian Pizzica dance, originally performed to rid the body of the venom of a poisonous spider, proved to be the ideal remedy for depression in periods of poverty. Blasphemy Rapsody was written during the coronavirus pandemic. The dancers from ICK Amsterdam worked on their solos at home, basing their dances on the Charleston and the South-Italian Pizzica. Can the power of dance act as the driving force for the change we so desperately need?

THE COLOURS AND VIBE OF BARCELONA DRIVE HER STYLE OF DRAWING

La Nonette is the pseudonym of illustrator Manon Bijkerk: it’s an abbreviation of her first names, with ‘La’ alluding to her French-Belgian roots. She is well-known for her cheerful illustrations on cards, stickers and art prints for on the wall. Manon graduated in 2011, in the middle of the economic crisis. ‘At that time, becoming an illustrator of children’s books, for example, simply wasn’t an option. So I decided to rely on myself, bought a printer and started my solo label.’ Barcelona, where she lived for a time, is a great source of inspiration to her. The colours and vibe of the city drive her style of drawing. In a nod to feminism, women are often the key figures in her prints. ‘Illustration is largely communication. I want to draw attention to social themes like sexuality and the impossible feminine beauty ideal.’ La Nonette calls these myths into question with texts such as I was born bikini ready. ‘I like to draw strong women. My illustrations are recognisable and accessible: I’m trying to generate a sort of ‘dependable big sister’ feeling.’

LANDGOED DE PALTZ This old country estate was designed in 1876 by the prestigious Dutch landscape architects Springer and Copijn. It’s in the forest between Soesterberg air base and Soestduinen. There’s a three-kilometre walk around the estate, which takes you down beech avenues, past water features, a grand villa, a coach house and a shepherd’s hut. There’s also a 19th-century maze with a hermit’s cave in the middle. A short history

Just a ten minute walk away from Neude square, along the city canal and past Miffy Square, lies the Bemuurde Weerd. Roughly translated this means ‘walled river area’. The name traces back to the 1300s, when this part of Utrecht was a suburb with its own city walls. It had a flourishing pottery industry and the canals served as commercial waterways. A remnant of this era is the city sluice that still regulates the water entering the city’s canals.

This performance was made during the corona crisis and combines elements of both dances.

Her main themes are the seduction, strength, power and powerlessness of women, human relationships, animals and nature. Everything matters in Sleper’s life and art and is given a place in her photos, drawings, paintings and sculptures. RAILWAY MUSEUM UNTIL 15 NOV > Toasties Truffles Trains. Food and drinks in the train Who hasn’t been there? The catering service with coffee, the dreary station restaurants and the lukewarm snacks from a wall of vending-machines. Everyone who travels by rail in the Netherlands will be familiar with these. There’s a long history of food and drinks being served at the station and aboard trains. And let’s not forget the luxurious restaurant cars in international trains, where the elite dined on caviar and truffles. International newcomers and residents of Utrecht can visit the ‘expat’ centre four days a week. The IWCUR-staff will assist you with all your questions and paperwork regarding your move to the Utrecht Region, including formalities with the municipality and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). Free city tours For some inside information you won’t find in a guide book, join a free walking tour. The 3 hour Utrecht Free Tours starts every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 at the Dom Tower. Just look for a guide in a red shirt or sweater. On Saturdays, the Tourist Information Centre organises a guided tour in English at 14:00.

The wharf cellars in Utrecht were originally built as tunnels linking the Oudegracht quay with the cellars of nearby houses. Later on, they were converted into spaces to store merchandise. De Hoendervorst wharf cellar was recently renovated to form a modern room with kitchenette.
