MAG Utrecht provides you with tips for cultural events, guides you to the most natural, peaceful spots in and around the city and tells you how to best support local businesses in these challenging times.

De Nieuwe Stad
Nowadays, the Oliemolen quarter of Amersfoort, which was an industrial estate until the start of this century, is a creative, innovative, sustainable hotspot. The former Prodent toothpaste factory is the catalyst of this redevelopment. It is now an events venue and home base for the pop podium Fluor. In addition to workplaces and studios where local entrepreneurs work, you can also visit De Nieuwe Stad for a drink and a bite to eat. Hoog Vuur (Oude Fabriekstraat 26) serves as the main living room of this micro-city, café-restaurant Kroast (Kleine Koppel 36) is in the former Rohm & Haas soap factory on the Eemhaven and Het Lokaal (Oliemolenhof 90) is a local shop and a tasting room for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everything on the menu is locally sourced wherever possible. Ping Pong Expo
Table tennis is much more than a game to the members of the Ping Pong Club. It’s a way of staying in contact with each other. To give people a better idea of the atmosphere around a table tennis table, the Ping Pong Club has organised its first, very appropriate, exhibition: they asked various artists to create work using table tennis bats as the canvas. The resulting arty bats are not just on display at the Ping Pong Club in Concordiastraat, but you can also buy one to hang on your wall at home. > until late December, Ping Pong Club depingpongclub.nl M ad

The corner of Amsterdamsestraatweg 59, next to the Aldi, was in need of a facelift. So graffiti artist Jan Heinsbroek, a.k.a. JanIsDeMan, was asked to create a wall painting. He asked people living in the street to name their favourite landmarks in the street and then included them in his mural. You will recognise the water tower, the church spire and the Yellow Bridge. All the addresses of the landmarks that you see are shown on a sign next to the mural, so you can bike past them if you want.

Christmas baubles made from wood
Give your Christmas tree a hint of Utrecht by hanging baubles from Noest, who gives condemned trees a second lease of life by making all kinds of unusual products from the wood, including Christmas baubles. From the weak coffee and soggy sandwiches served in station kiosks, to a full-blown dinner in a train coupé: the exhibition Toasties, Truffles, Trains is a celebration of everything connected with eating and drinking on trains and at stations. A fun scavenger will lead you through this exhibition with your kids. WINTER SHOPPING
In the windmill
Not to be foiled by COVID-19, this year, the Molen de Ster windmill in the Lombok district will be transformed into winter paradise. From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., around 30 stalls will be selling local produce to give as gifts or keep for yourself. The millers will also give free guided tours. Creative hotspots
On Saturday 21 November, creative hotspots Vechtclub XL, Kanaal30, De Createur and De Alchemist will be open. You can wander around the studios, listen to the stories of talented, local makers and buy unique, hand-crafted gifts (porcelain, jewellery, wood, 3D prints, illustrations, fashion, art, furniture and more). Café Keet
The Merwede canal was built in the late 19th century by the so-called ‘polder boys’. They lived together in temporary homes, also known as ‘keets’. A ‘keet woman’ was appointed to each shack, to cook, clean and generally care for the polder boys. We’re reliably informed that the evenings were a blast. Café Keet is the name of the café/bar in the creative hotspot Kanaal30, located on the Merwede canal in the south-west of Utrecht. It’s great place for coffee, lunch or drinks. If it’s too cold to sit outside, the inside has been COVID-19proofed: the seating has been arranged and ‘stacked’ to maintain a safe distance from fellow-customers. Smart! > Kanaalweg 30 cafekeet.nl

ur trip along the Amsterdam-Rijn canal starts at the Werkspoorkwartier. A few years ago, this was just another desolate industrial estate. The area is now a vibrant place where creative makers can work and generally meet up. The eye-catcher in this triangle is the Werkspoorkathedraal 1 , where railway material was manufactured until the 1970s. After undergoing extensive renovations, it became a hotspot for events and creative entrepreneurs. But the Werkspoorkwartier has more to offer than this monumental factory building. There’s the Hof van Cartesius, a creative hotbed built entirely from recycled building materials, where most of the entrepreneurs focus on circularity. It is also the place for artistic safe havens, such as De Schaverij, the Vlampijp studios, De Nijverheid and Stichting 16X. Don’t be surprised when you see a wooden miniEiffel Tower standing outside Stichting 16X.
CHILLING ON THE BANKS
From Werkspoorcafé de Leckere 2 , the café/bar attached to De Leckere brewery, we bike across the bridge to Keulsekade. As the huge barges glide along the Amsterdam-Rijn canal, we leave the imposing industrial heritage behind us. We bike across the Industriehaven bridge 3 , a fabulous iron construction dating from 1920, and head for the Hogeweide bridge - better known as the yellow bridge. Biking underneath this bridge, we pass the Douwe Egberts coffee factory and leave the Amsterdam-Rijn canal to follow the bend in the Merwede canal. Right there, in the shadow of the roasting facility, is Mr. Black

and The White Ox café-restaurant 4 , where you can stop for early refreshments and sit outside if the weather allows. We follow the water until the path swings across Spinozaweg and the Spinoza bridge, crossing the Merwede canal and taking us along Kanaalweg to reach the bank of the Amsterdam-Rijn canal. We are now at the northernmost point of the Oog in Al district, which gives us a great view of the yellow bridge and the spot where the two canals merge. You’ll find the Soia urban beach 5 here, which is also open in the winter.

WATERWAY TRAFFIC
URBAN BOULEVARD
We bike alongside the water to Richard Wagnerlaan, where we head inland for a bit. To the right, houseboats are moored idyllically in leafy surroundings, and to the left, you see the façade of the former military hospital 6 , built in the style of the Amsterdam School. The building now serves as the headquarters of the Protestant Church. We take a complicated bend via Den Hommel swimming pool and Kennedylaan before we see Rooseveltboulevard 7 stretching out ahead of us alongside the robust canal. In the 1950s, this bank was a spot where the original residents of Kanaleneiland came to relax. The area deteriorated in the 1980s, but for the last
In a former villa at the foot of the Prins Claus bridge, you’ll find Op Roose 8 . The glass conservatory of this local restaurant is the perfect spot to watch the waterway traffic on Europe’s busiest canal while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat. We continue our journey under the Prins Claus bridge 9 , which connects Kanaleneiland with Papendorp. Remember to stop and admire the vivid street art adorning the bare concrete here. We follow the path along the canal until we reach the Noordersluis 10 lock, where we turn left to complete our rondje stadseiland. Bike towards the point where the Vaartsche Rijn merges with the Merwede canal, with Liesbosch park 11 and the ruins of the former brick factory on the opposite bank. You’ll soon see the former NV Hollandia wire

Keep following the Merwede canal, past the Kanaal30 13 creative hotbed, which is based a former printing works (give Café Keet a try!). The next eye-catcher is Villa Jongerius 14 . Ford dealer Jan Jongerius had this red-andwhite office villa built in the late 1930s in a style that combined new objectivity with Art Deco. The building was empty for many years, but has recently been restored to its former glory. Our trip takes us past the old Munt gebouw 15 and the Muntsluis bridge 16 , one of Utrecht’s finest historical places. Stop and dream about the houseboat you could moor here on the quay... The old Park Oog in Al country estate appears on the left, where we can stop for a drink at Landhuis in de Stad 17 . Or you could choose Buurten in de Fabriek 18 , an equally good restaurant in the former soy processing factory. Both great places to relive your rondje stadseiland.

WITH CARTOONIST ARGIBALD By Merel van ’t Hooft
Cartoonist/poet/writer and allround life philosopher Willem Bentvelzen has lived in the heart of Utrecht for over thirteen years. No wonder one of his popular works is a t-shirt proclaiming ‘Utrecht is my Ibiza!’. Known for his quirky cartoons and poignant observations, you can also find this artist (who goes by the pseudonym of Argibald) drawing piles of strangely stacked cats, elephants or abstract birds. He’s the kind of person that doesn’t need much, enjoys the small things in life and is always on the lookout for the unexpected beauty in the mundane. Including an accidental tattoo the size of a ballpoint created by dropping a fountain pen on his foot once. Janskerkhof flowermarket
Artsy cafe ‘Hofman Café on Janskerkhof is my home away from home. It’s close to where I live, and I like to meet people there for a drink and a chat. It’s less busy than Neude, a bit artsy and the atmosphere is always great. I also go to the flower market on Janskerkhof each Saturday, to buy myself a nice little bouquet.’
Cacophony of sounds ‘I take a cycling trip around the province of Utrecht several times a week. My route usually goes through Groenekan and Hollandsche Rading, then back through Maarsseveen. It’s a great way to clear my mind or find some new inspiration. There’s a beautiful area halfway the cycling route, where you can sit down to take a break while listening to the cacophony of sounds from nature.’

‘I’m a massive fan of thrift stores. I cycle around Utrecht a lot to deliver purchases to my clients, and often use the excuse to pop into a second-hand store on the way. Almost all the furniture and decorations in my house hail from thrift stores. My favourite one is probably De Arm on Oudegracht, although I find it very difficult to choose.’
Pizza pancake ‘From time to time I take a long walk with a good friend in Amelisweerd, a green area just outside the city. We have some interesting conversations, philosophise about life and then sit down for a Reus van Rhijnauwen at Theehuis Rhijnauwen. It’s basically a gigantic pancake with a bunch of amazing pizza toppings. Plenty of sustenance for the walk back.’
‘Mariaplaats holds a special place in my heart. I used to spend of lot of time there at markets, selling my art. In those days, you would often find me in café Jozef, though I go there less now. The trees make Mariaplaats a beautiful place, and I love the general vibe. It’s a bit like Janskerkhof actually, come to think of it.’

t the start of lockdown, the city centre seemed abandoned. A lot of the shops were closed, day-trippers stayed away and the seagulls were begging for left-overs that didn’t materialise. But as a local, you could still wander through the empty streets of Utrecht for a breath of fresh air. The perfect moment to discover the world of street poetry. A street poetry tour is still a good COVID-19-proof activity. To make it even more enjoyable, there’s now a free VERS app to help you find the words that poets have strewn around the city over the years. Your audio guide is the linguist Kila van der Starre, who specialises in Dutch ‘poetry outside books’. We walked the route with her and co-developer of the app Ramon Verberne from the Interactive Culture Foundation.

street poetry app VERS, in Dutch and English. ‘Most people first experience poetry at weddings, funerals, in the media and on the street. You’re always reading about compilations, but they are only for the select few. The aim of my guided tours is to make people think about the poetry that is all around them. To explain the background so that they understand what makes something poetry, and see the world through the eyes of a poet.’ Kila selected poetry by a wide range of poets for the VERS app. ‘Living and dead, men,

women, young, old, white and non-white. The poems and the way they are presented also vary greatly. Diversity is what connects them.’ Kila’s favourite poem on the route is by J.C. Bloem, and it adorns a manhole cover. Although the poem is entitled Bemuurde Weerd, it is actually on Ganzenmarkt. ‘It’s quite funny to find a poem by a famous poet like J.C. Bloem on a manhole cover - something that most people associate with dirt. Some of the people
on my tours don’t see the funny side of this: why would you let people walk over a poem, a work of art? Others find it refreshing and downto-earth. I love the discussions this poem starts.’ The poem Het Hanengeschrei by Kees Stip, carved into wood and hanging in an alley of the same name, also features in the guided tour. This is Ramon Verberne’s favourite. ‘The poem is inextricably bound up with the location - it belongs in this street’, he explains. ‘You can just imagine Stip ordering a prawn rissole here and kissing his sweetheart, as he describes in the poem.’

You then walk to the resistance monument, where the app unlocks a poem by Engelman. You hear it being recited, and Kila’s explanation of the poem, the poet, the location and the context. You can then decide how fast (or slowly) you want to go and the order of your route. Ramon: ‘All of the poems are in public places, so anyone with a smartphone can join in. The audio recordings allow people who have difficulty reading, people with poor sight or blind people to listen to the poems too. And young people don’t need to worry about their street cred if they follow the poetry route, because they could just as easily be listening to rapper Boef rather than a poem by J.C. Bloem.’ A bike route will appear in the app soon. It will take you past one of Utrecht’s most famous examples of street poetry: the lines written by C.C.S. Crone near to Utrecht Centraal Station. ‘It’s not even really a poem’, says Kila mysteriously. Why not? Listen to the VERS app!

BLOODY, HAIRY AND STRANGE
BODY LANGUAGE
From wounds shaped like vaginas and wandering beheaded saints, to Mary spraying her breast milk into a fountain in a perfect arch and Jesus being pressed like a grape. Between 1300 and 1500, artists became increasingly interested in the human side of Jesus, Mary and other saints, and their bodies and body parts took the main stage in their works of art. But although the paintings, miniatures and sculptures became bloodier, hairier and stranger, this didn’t detract from their beauty. Alongside rare pieces from the Netherlands and abroad, you’ll see several revered objects such as a spectacular marble image of Saint Valérie (ca. 1475-1510) holding her head (after it had been chopped off) in her hands. > until 17 January 2021, Museum Catharijneconvent catharijneconvent.nl/visitor-information

EYE SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE Artist Marlou Beentjes is fascinated by optical illusions. In the intimate exhibition hall at EXbunker she transformed her fascination into a spatial experience. Graphic design, coloured lighting, music and clothing all combine to form an installation that is continuously changing. You see everchanging perspectives of the same image. It’s easy to make the comparison with modern-day society: we all look at the world from our own perspective, but what would happen if we tried to look at it through someone else’s eyes? > until 29 November, EXbunker exbunker.nl

STRAATBEELD In their day, organ figures were highly respected and carefully crafted products, which attracted lots of attention standing on an organ front. Some of them refer to bygone times, others represent role models or contentious topical issues. However, street music and the streetscape have changed enormously over time. In this exhibition, you’ll find out how this affected organ figures. It also has a modern side: over a century ago, modern artist Peter Demetz’ namesakes made the most beautiful organ figures in Italy. Demetz sees himself in line with this tradition, but his art is formed by lifelike, unpainted wooden images. > until 9 May 2021, Museum Speelklok museumspeelklok.nl

Ema
The young dancer Ema dances in the experimental company directed by her husband, choreographer Gastón. After a shocking event, the couple decide to put their 7-year-old adopted son Polo up for adoption. Their marriage comes under strain, particularly when Ema forms a plan to get her son back. Armed with a flamethrower and assisted by her friends, she works day and night to save her family. Musician and artist Nicolas Jaar composed the throbbing ambient reggae tones of the soundtrack, making the film a feast for the eyes and ears. The film was directed by Pablo Larraín, who made his name with Jackie (starring Natalie Portman). The film is screened with English subtitles.

Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave alone at Alexandra Palace
Fans of Nick Cave are in for a treat this winter: Idiot Prayer is the registration of a one off solo show by this musical genius in the legendary West Hall in Alexandra Palace in London. Liszt Concours
This is a special message for lovers of piano music: after the Liszt Concours was postponed last March for obvious reasons, the international young pianists are finally coming to Utrecht in November. Earlier this year, fourteen talented young pianists were selected after auditions in New York, Moscow, Shanghai and Utrecht. They will perform in Gasthuis Leeuwenbergh and try to convince the jury and audience that they are the rightful winners of the Liszt Concours. From metal to bluegrass and from punk to country: every Sunday since April, dB’s has been livestreaming a concert via the site and social media. As from June, twenty lucky listeners have been able to attend the gig in person. The shows were obviously sold out in no time, but luckily, we still have the livestream. As they say, COVID-19 or not, the show must go on(line). Here are a few names for the coming months: on 1 November, Utrecht’s best-known folk band I Am Oak will take to the stage in a special formation, and on 22 November, you can attend the release of Quiet Life, the album by singer-songwriter Squirrel. It’s become a bit of a tradition: in the dark winter months, the animation ‘Miffy lives here’ is projected onto the façade of the Miffy museum. The eighth-century church didn’t survive, but there is now another church dedicated to St Maarten: the Dom Church. The bishop is depicted in the church’s bronze doors. And the walls of the Pandhof, the cloistered garden of the Dom Church, are a sort of stone comic book with St Maarten in the leading role. The sculptures in the triangles above the windows tell the story of his life. Start at the entrance on Achter de Dom if you want to ‘read’ the story in chronological order. The feast of St Maarten is usually quite a big event in Utrecht, but as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, things will be different this year. The wonderful light sculptures that are normally carried through the city in the St Maarten Parade, will be on display on Berlijnplein in the Leidsche Rijn district during the St Maarten Route (Ronde van Sint Maarten) on 6 and 7 November.

s early as the eighth century, a tiny church was dedicated to St Maarten on the current Domplein. St Maarten was known for his benevolence. According to the legend, he was so taken by the plight of a poor vagrant that he decided to cut his expensive cassock in two. He gave one half to the vagrant, and kept the other half as it was officially owned by Rome. The red and white of the city’s coat of arms and flag of Utrecht are said to refer to the red colour of the cassock and the white of the Saint´s undergarments, which became visible when he shared his cassock with the vagrant.

You can walk the route, which takes about an hour, admiring dozens of light sculptures and random performances by choirs, orchestras, dancers, clowns and theatrical acts along the way. If you intend to walk the route, check whether free tickets are still available on rondevansintmaarten.nl. In the run-up to the St Maarten Route, you can check out a small exhibition of light sculptures in the Catharina cathedral (Lange Nieuwstraat 36). They will be on show until 4 November. And on 7 November, there’s a free concert in the Dom church by soloists ensemble Cantores Martini. The singers will focus on the requiem by Antoine Brumel (ca. 1460-1515).

VINKEVEENSE PLASSEN The scenery to the north-west of Utrecht features water, meadowland and tiny villages. From short circular routes to day-long hikes: there are countless walks around the Vinkeveense Plassen nature reserve. The routes take you along meandering rivers, past old forts, and through expansive polders and boggy peat marshland. If our winters had been colder (like they used to be) you could have tried your hand at open-air skating. AROUND BUNSCHOTEN-SPAKENBURG Walking through the rural outskirts of Bunschoten-Spakenburg takes you through the polder and along a waterside path. There’s what is known as a ‘clog route’ (paths that go right through farmland in the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland), which starts from De Hoop windmill in Bunschoten-Spakenburg. This is also a good place to park. You can’t go wrong on this 8-kilometre route; all you do is follow the blue clog-shaped signs. Warm up afterwards in one of the cafés in the pretty village of Bunschoten-Spakenburg, which is traditionally a fishing village. Then take a stroll past the authentic fishing boats in the museum harbour or visit a local shipyard.
EXPLORE
In the middle of the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Utrecht Hill Ridge), you’ll discover a striking, grass-covered construction: the Pyramid of Austerlitz. In 1804 (during the French occupation of the Netherlands), the French General Marmont ordered his soldiers to build this pyramid, topped with an obelisk, along the lines of the pyramids he had seen a few years earlier in Egypt. They finished the construction in just 27 days. Climb the pyramid hill for a great view of the surrounding area. Various walks have been set out around this unusual monument, taking you along narrow woodland paths, wide avenues of trees and stretches of heathland. There’s a car park, information centre and café close to the Pyramid of Austerlitz, with a playground and a mini funfair for the kids.

The core business of the Meisjes van de Wijn 12 is giving wine advice. They do this at events such as wine tastings, in their web shop (every product has its own short video) and these days, in their own pop-up store. All of the wines have been tried and tested by the Meisjes themselves, so you always get sound advice. As an added bonus: you can decant wine into your own empty bottle (or jerrycan) and take your purchases home in a pink wheelbarrow (that you’re expected to bring back, obviously). They also hold tasting sessions after closing time on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wine is served on tap at the Most wine bar 13 in Leidsche Rijn, so you can compile your own wine tasting. Luc Janssens and Per Vonk are small-scale producers of chocolate bars made from special types of cocoa which they source directly from cocoa farmers in Tanzania, Madagascar and Nicaragua. They do the rest themselves in their factory in Utrecht. Mesjokke chocolate isn’t the sort of chocolate you eat for an instant sugar rush. It needs to be savoured, allowed to melt on your tongue with a glass of good whisky, says Luc. Or beer. Hang on... chocolate and beer? Let it snow... You either love them or you hate them, but on New Year’s Eve, there’s no escaping them: the Dutch oliebollen. New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands would be unimaginable without these deep-fried, stodgy doughnuts. They’re sold from colourful stalls that pop up on street corners and town squares towards the end of the year. Some ice cream parlours also turn into oliebollen stalls for the winter months. The stall on Neude is a good example; it’s there year in, year out. But oliebollen aren’t actually as typically Dutch as we think - the countries around us aren’t averse to dropping scoops of dough into a deep-fat fryer either. The typically Dutch part is buying your oliebol from one of these traditional-looking stalls, with or without currants, and eating it on the spot. After which you inevitably have to brush the dusting of white powder (icing sugar!) from your face, scarf and coat. But this is all part of the fun. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. Getting around THE U-OV DAY TICKET > The U-OV day ticket (Dagkaart) is ideal for travelling to various places in the municipality of Utrecht, including Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht Science Park and De Haar Castle. It is valid for one day (€ 6,20), 2 days (€9,25) or 3 days (€ 11,85). Buy your ticket at the U-OV Service Store

in the main hall of Utrecht Central Station (trains). Children up to the age of 4 can travel for free on U-OV buses and trams. OV-CHIP CARD (OV-CHIPKAART) > The OV-chip card (OV-chipkaart) is a public transport card which is accepted by all operators in the Utrecht region. You can buy an anonymous OV-chip card for € 7,50 at the ticket vending machines at Utrecht Central Station or at the U-OV Service Stores in the main hall of the station. You can also get a card at the Tourist Information Centre. Please ensure you have enough credit on your OV-chip card before you travel and remember to always check-in and -out on the bus, train and tram platform using the OV-chip card. UTRECHT REGION PASS > In addition to providing access to the entire public transport system in the Netherlands, the Utrecht Region Pass enables you to travel to most places of interest in the Netherlands. You can book the travel pass online, collect it when you arrive in town and start travelling straight away. Check utrechtregionpass.com for more information. You can collect the pass at the Tourist Information Centre. BICYCLE RENTAL > Cycling is the easiest and fastest way for getting around town. There are several bike rental spots in the city centre. Bikes are also for rent at the Tourist

The International Welcome Centre Utrecht Region (IWCUR) is located on the second floor of the Stadskantoor (Utrecht municipal offices). International newcomers and residents of Utrecht can visit the ‘expat’ centre four days a week. The IWCUR-staff will assist you with all your questions and paperwork regarding your move to the Utrecht Region, including formalities with the municipality and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). The IWCUR also provides information about housing, education, job opportunities, health care and more. > Monday and Tuesday (9:00 to 16:00), Thursday (13:00 to 16:00) and Friday (9:00 to 12:00), Stadskantoor (Stadsplateau 1) welcome.utrechtregion.com

Free city tours For some inside information you won’t find in a guide book, join a free walking tour. The 3 hour Utrecht Free Tours starts every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 at the Dom Tower. Just look for a guide in a red shirt or sweater. On Saturdays, the Tourist Information Centre organises a guided tour in English at 14:00.
