Welcome to Utrecht The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! Lucky for us, there’s plenty to do this summer. What about watching a film at a cultural hotspot, under the stars on Domplein or in a green oasis somewhere in town? The music venues, theatres, museums and galleries will welcome you with open arms. You can head to Berlijnplein, the city square that Stadslab RAUM has transformed into an urban lab bursting with works of art. Going on a fort safari in one of the forts in the Utrecht region is a great idea for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Many of the forts of the Dutch Water Lines are on ‘islands’, where the public was banned for many years so that nature could take its course. The biodiversity is now flourishing. This summer, you can go on a fort safari with a forest ranger to learn about the unique lichens, tiny insects, bats and breeding birds that live there. Another great thing to do is find a spot for a picnic. We’ve listed various places in town where you can fill your picnic hamper with all kinds of deliciousness, and the perfect places to spread out your blanket to eat it. Life is good!

To fund the renovation of the museum garden, Museum and Observatory Sonnenborgh organises a lottery with a very special main prize: a unique overnight stay for two people on the private ‘Campsite Sonnenborgh’. Holy wall

On a blind wall of a building in Pieter Saenredamstraat in the Schilderswijk neighbourhood, you’ll find a mural entitled The Nave and Choir of the Church of Saint Catharine. This is no coincidence: the original was painted by an artist named Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665). That painting is currently on display in Upton House, a country house and museum in the English town of Banbury. St Catharine’s Cathedral itself is on Lange Nieuwstraat, and church services are still held there. You can go in to admire the interior on Saturday afternoons. This artistic, COVID-proof walk was devised by the people behind EXbunker (a tiny gallery in a former World War II bunker in Wilhelminapark) and EXboot (another tiny gallery, this time in a former brothel boat on Nijverheid). They asked dozens of artists to exhibit their work in Utrecht front gardens along popular walking routes. Sandwijck country house has a colourful past. It was occupied by squatters in the 1980s, is known for its strikingly pink door and window frames, was renovated and is now home to a legal commune. It is set in a small estate, which is a lovely place to walk. Silent Reading Party

There’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in a good book. But finding enough me-time can be difficult in this fast and furious world. So the historical Jacobikerk is opening its doors for a Silent Reading Party. Pick a Saturday afternoon, take your favourite book and settle down for 90 minutes of quiet reading under the monumental arches. Drinks are provided afterwards so that readers can swap their reading experiences. Kasvio

It was her life-long dream: chef Mari Pitkänen, who used to cook at Oproer restaurant, has now opened her own place in the Metal Cathedral in the Leidsche Rijn district. Kasvio (‘herbarium’ in Finnish) is a plant-based restaurant, where they use organic ingredients, herbs grown in the garden of the Metal Cathedral and seasonal vegetables from smallscale growers. Risograph prints, illustrations and graphic design

By Manon Marijs Petra Verkade’s prints and illustrations are colourful, bright, challenging and work well on walls. They conjure up a fluorescent world, in stark contrast to everyday reality. Petra developed her characteristic style of visual imagery while studying Graphic Design at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, during a year at Kunsthochschule in Berlin and while doing various placements. Her design process is primarily intuitive. She works with a Risograph printer, a Japanese scanner/printer suitable for fast, efficient high-volume printing. Instead of carefully printing in full colour, a Risograph prints each colour of the design onto the paper as a separate layer, in much the same way as screen printing. ‘It will be a lovely night if it ever comes’ How Filmcafé, dB’s, and Oproer are fighting to reopen after CAB fire

MANY MONTHS HAVE GONE BY SINCE A RAGING FIRE PASSED THROUGH THE CULTURAL HUB CAB RONDOM IN ZUILEN, DAMAGING OR DESTROYING THE BUSINESSES THERE, WHICH WERE ALREADY REELING FROM THE LOCKDOWN. NOW, THE OWNERS OF FILMCAFÉ, DB’S, AND OPROER ARE SHARING THEIR STORY - AND WHAT THE FUTURE MAY LOOK LIKE. By Beatriz Negreiros

A brisk walk away from the Zuilen station lies a sleeping beast called CAB Rondom. The brick building can be spotted as far as from the carriage window, but, upon stepping inside, we get the impression we’re in a ghost town. But it wasn’t always like this. Before Utrecht closed up amidst the lockdown, the CAB building was home to several businesses which regularly hosted cultural and leisure events. From glass clinking, to film watching, to dancing, the CAB building was a place completely unlike what it is now; loud, busy and happy. However, it was not only the pandemic that made it quiet, empty and lonely. In January a fire ravaged through it and devoured many of the businesses there namely, Filmcafé, Oproer and dB’s. dB’s was lucky enough to live through it; Filmcafé and Oproer were not. Their presence is still

felt on the CAB grounds, though. The Filmcafé logo, burnt and greyed out, stands on the wall where it once shon; an Oproer poster still hangs on the wall, its corners eaten up by graffiti.

HEADLESS CHICKEN

Omar Waseq founded Filmcafé three years ago - ‘a place where you could watch movies, organise cultural events, and where any kind of art was welcome’, he explains. The CAB seemed like the perfect place to host it; ‘we could do anything we like’ - he recalls. From club nights to club days, they would sometimes stay up for weekends on end, always in good company. ‘I think Utrecht citizens really liked this place’, says Omar through the phone. It is still with sadness that he recalls that night. ‘I was having dinner with my wife when I got a text message saying, hey, there

Wether they will stay in CAB, however, is not certain; after nearly thirty years of business, dB’s might be leaving - and not just the location - for good, due to the effect of a housing development which may impact the business more than the fire itself.

NO STRANGER TO ADAPTATION

Omar and Mark weren’t so lucky - but they remain hopeful. For Mark, there is no other option. Staying positive is ‘the only thing they have control over’. Him, Bart-Jan and the remaining Oproer employees keep busy with the brewery, which is still delivering its beers. They are now looking for a new place in Utrecht, hoping to open ‘in the first quarter of 2022’. Omar is no stranger to adaptation. During the lockdowns, which halted Filmcafé’s activity, he and the rest of the crew hustled to deliver pizzas and Christmas trees to keep afloat - so much so that, before the fire, they were convinced they had made it. The worst, it seems, was yet to come. But having to forcefully relocate has led Omar to make an important call, which will certainly impact the future of Filmcafé -

this time, they are looking to buy, not rent. ‘I want to rebuild Filmcafé - and never leave again’, he says, his passion palpable.

ALL HELP IS WELCOME

By reading the headlines, we could be led to believe that Oproer and Filmcafé are no longer - but, upon speaking to the people who first dreamed them up, we are convinced these places will never die. ‘When people come out and are bored in the city, they will be grateful for cultural spaces like ours’, concludes Omar, who welcomes all help to rebuild Filmcafé lawyers, architects, and anyone willing to lend a hand. And, according to Paul, people - not just musicians - are thirsty. ‘With the city’s help, we want to bring back live music’. When will the venue sell out again? He’s unsure, but replies dreamingly: ‘It will be a lovely night if it ever comes’.

‘I want to know how our food is produced and exactly where it comes from’, says social entrepreneur Mart de Bruijn. ‘I’m currently studying Environmental Economics and I was working on a platform for local entrepreneurs when the coronavirus pandemic began. Emile Corre from Roze Bunker, Josse Haarhuis from Buitengewone Varkens, Lianne de Bie from the Slow Food Youth Network and I saw that local producers were unable to sell their products when the hospitality industry was forced to close down. We decided to sell boxes of their produce under the Locals Utrecht flag. It was our way of helping them through the crisis.’ People loved being surprised by local Utrecht delicacies, in fact it became quite a hype. Just before Christmas, they were approached by the owner of a building on Oudegracht. ‘He was impressed by the initiative and asked whether we’d be interested in a pop up-store. I now run the Locals Utrecht shop with Daan van den Berg. We sell all sorts, but I like the rolls best: you can combine so many different products in a roll.’

Wide variety ‘I know this is blowing my own trumpet, but to me, Locals Utrecht (Vismarkt 2) is a terrific place. We offer a wide variety of products, from fennel and charcuterie to beer and apple pie. You can buy filter coffee from local roasters, and rolls that we fill with products from our shop. You can even arrange a tasting session with friends to try some local produce.’

Southern vibe

‘I love the shady courtyard on Mariaplaats. It has a southern vibe, a bit non-Utrecht really. Le Jardin restaurant (Mariaplaats 42) in the corner is a lovely ‘green’ place to eat. It stays nice and cool there on hot summer days, but doesn’t cool off too much in the evenings. It’s a bit like being in Maastricht, which is my home town. Perhaps that’s why I like it so much!’

Bread to nibble ‘I enjoy walking through Amelisweerd and when I’m there, I usually go to De Veldkeuken (Koningslaan 11A, Bunnik) to pick up an olive loaf. It’s delicious to nibble later on with a few drinks.’

Local kiwis ‘The one and only kiwi farmer in the Netherlands works in Bunnik. You can taste and buy Utrecht kiwis in Nieuw Slagmaat (Marsdijk 5, Bunnik), and you can even pick them on the special harvest days in September. Not only kiwis, but also apples, pears and pumpkins. If you can’t be bothered to pick your own, there’s a farm shop and we sell their fruit and veg too.’

Feeding the goats

‘Geertje’s Hoeve (Thematerweg 5, Haarzuilens) is everything that you would imagine a farm to be, but with the added attraction of pancakes and coffee. Children can play their hearts out, and there’s plenty for adults to see too. This is a circular business and they are keen to show visitors how the goats are fed and how they make their cheese. In fact, as a visitor, you’re invited to feed the goats too.’

LIVING LAB

‘Public space is a place where you can meet each other and step outside your bubble’, says Tom Loois, programme maker and curator at RAUM. ‘Look at our parks, where all kinds of people get together. You just casually borrow a corkscrew from someone you would otherwise never have met. It’s a place where you can meet and greet other people from your city on equal terms.’ Although public spaces are theoretically intended for everyone, some people feel more at home or safer than others. And people do different things there: bored youths use public spaces as their sitting room, cyclists use them as public bike sheds, and families use them as playgrounds. The way that public space is used is largely determined by the way it’s been designed. The connection between these two aspects is the subject of the RAUM der Lusten exhibition, curated in association with ZUS architects. What happens to our behaviour if a place is designed to be exciting or in some way special?

his year more than ever, we have been enjoying the parks, the paths along the Singel and the city’s numerous squares. In jargon, urban geographers and planners refer to these places as ‘public spaces’. Basically, this means anywhere outside that is freely accessible to the public. Of course ‘freely accessible’ is a contentious term. Try getting your wheelchair across Neude, or finding a place where you can wee in peace as a woman.

In order to study this, RAUM is transforming its site on Berlijnplein into three different landscapes. The main question is how will these landscapes influence visitors’ behaviour? The landscapes are based on the famous 15th-century triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights by Jheronimus Bosch, and they will be named Hell, the World and Paradise. ‘The sum total will be a dizzying collection of works of art, performances and attributes, designed and developed in a way that will temporarily take you right out of your comfort zone’, explains Tom. ‘You may find yourself in strange situations where you encounter unusual things or react differently from the way you’re used to, and you may start thinking about yourself and how you relate to others. The exhibition is actually one big living lab, a landscape in which we explore

what we expect from public spaces, and how we treat each other while we are in them.’

BLACK SAND

So what should we expect from a landscape named Hell? Tom: ‘Think of a place you want to get away from as quickly as possible, dystopian surroundings filled with black sand. I suppose you could compare it those eery back alleys you find in cities. How will visitors react? Will they reach for their phones en masse and totally ignore each other? Will they somehow shut themselves off from what’s going on around them?’ One of the works of art in this landscape is Homo Opinio by Maarten Baas. It is about constantly voicing your own opinion. Tom: ‘In a world of mass communication and perpetual flows of information, can people actually hear themselves (and other people)? And do they even know how to listen?’ Perishable Goods by Andrea Hasler is

also in Hell. This picture of a lump of meat carrying a Chanel handbag and wearing a gold chain is the artist’s way of questioning our consumer society. Just as in-your-face is Bar Rectum by Atelier van Lieshout, a sculpture that portrays the human digestive system, from the tongue via the stomach and intestines right through to the anus. A great place to stop for a drink.

The next landscape, the World, will be a bit calmer, says Tom. ‘The Common Ground collective has installed an allotment for anyone to work in: they say that gardening generates kinship. So will people roll up their sleeves? That’s what we’ll be looking at here.’ Visitors to the World will also come across photos by Melissa Schriek, showing people in public spaces in weird and wonderful poses. And finally Paradise, which is a dune landscape designed for leisure and relaxation, and offering a public pizza oven. Tom: ‘I wonder whether Utrecht locals will start bringing their own pizza dough,

picnic blankets and wine so that they can bake pizzas here.’ Visitors to all of the landscapes become test subjects through exposure to various works of art. This is also true of the Unconscious Performance by visual artist Willem de Haan. His work comprises a billboard bearing a film script. ‘The script describes the current situation in that location,’ Tom explains. ‘For example: “Two people are walking along the path, deep in conversation.” There’s a new script every two weeks, depending on what is actually happening at the location. So without knowing, you could play a leading role in the new script and read about your own behaviour. But what the artist really wants to discover is whether visitors are influenced by the script in reality.’

ESCAPING FROM HELL

And then there’s the Urban Playwalk app made by game and experience designers Lilly Higgins and Bruno Setola. This app challenges you to behave in an entirely different,

Instructions like: ‘Lie down if you see something blue’ adds a frivolous element to the dynamics in the landscape you happen to be in. You can also experience the entire event online. A virtual game experience, developed in association with the Utrecht-based design office Kummer & Herrman, allows you to walk around the exhibition. THE ART OF SEDUCTION

TRACK OF IMAGINATION The end of the nineteenth century saw the appearance of the first of many beautifully illustrated railway posters, designed to seduce people into taking the train. People from neighbouring countries were drawn into ‘Holland’ by attractive posters promising them windmills, tulip fields and girls in traditional dress. On the later, more modern, posters these typical Dutch scenes made way for ‘locals’. This exhibition was compiled by keen collector of posters and publicist Arjan den Boer. The posters come from the Railway Museum’s own collection, the personal collection of the compiler and several Dutch and foreign museums and archives. Life here changed considerably over the past seventy years. The rural character was gone by the time the Overvecht housing developments were completed, factories such as the ‘Benenkluif’ (a bone char factory) were relocated and many entrepreneurs closed their shops. In this exhibition, residents share their memories to show you the social history - past and present - of this neighbourhood.

How have you managed during the pandemic? ‘I’ve been rewriting my new album. I wanted to release it last year, but I put it off because I couldn’t tour. I thought: I’ll have another go at it, improve it. The writing part is difficult because I work best under pressure and there’s not much going on at the moment. But I’m getting there. And I’ve set up an online platform where I do livestreams and talk to fans. I really missed that; normally after a show, I stand around the merchandise for an hour or so, chatting with fans.’

Do you still draw inspiration for your songs from within? You called your first two albums ‘therapy EPs’. ‘I do. Writing music has always been a form of therapy for me. It’s a chance to channel my thoughts. Even now, I try to immerse myself in subjects that interest me, like dreams and insomnia. I’m doing lots of nerdy reading on the

She performed her new show Huidhonger (Craving Skin Contact) perhaps four times. ‘Devastating, obviously,’ says Lakshmi Swami Persaud from her living room via Zoom. ‘But I’m over it now. It is what it is. I’m a fighter.’

subject, about how your subconscious works. I sometimes have weeks when I just can’t sleep. I turn this into something positive by studying it and using it for my music and lyrics.’ The first single on your latest album, Lullaby, is very personal. ‘Yes, I wrote it when I was bending over backwards, losing myself, to get the attention of a certain person. I even modified my breathing to match this person’s. But why am I so desperate for one person’s approval? That’s what this track is about. It’s a bit scary bringing this out into the open: I’m fine talking on stage, but saying something personal like this in the media is something else again. I’m always much too honest, ha-ha.’ To what extent does your music define you? ‘A lot. I don’t think I’d necessarily be a cheerful person without my music. I haven’t always been happy and open; I was very shy as a child. Music was my safe space. It gave me confidence in myself, in the other people and in the world. I didn’t know how I’d go about it, but I knew that music had to be my future. Getting this far has been a mega process, and it feels to have gone very, very slowly.’ Slowly? You were in the final of the ‘Grote Prijs van Nederland’ in your second year at college. ‘You’re right, that was fast. But my

personal development was much slower. In those days, I was having panic attacks on stage because I didn’t know who I was. I bluffed my way through it. It took me a long time to work out where I stood, who I was and what I wanted. Did I want to rage at festivals or tell a story in theatres? I now have the answer: I want both, and I can have both! It may not sound logical, but all those people watching me on stage make me feel good and safe. It’s as if I’m untouchable.’ Were you making pop noir at the Herman Brood Academy? ‘Not at first. I started out in punk bands and that was just a case of the louder

the better. The pop noir began when I started writing music on the piano. This can be loud too, but it has more layers. I’ve listened to classical music since I was a child, mainly because I did ballet, but I’m also inspired by hardcore punk. Anything I listen to has to have meaning and emotion. I can’t just listen to a dance hit if it isn’t basically a good song too.’ You moved to Utrecht two years ago. What brought you here? ‘I loved Utrecht while I was studying here. My brother lives here and I know a few people – but not so many that I’m always tempted to go out. It really feels like my city.’

‘ANYTHING I LISTEN TO HAS TO HAVE MEANING AND EMOTION’ So what dreams do you have now? ‘I’d love to play the Ziggo Dome. And work with foreign artists and producers, go abroad more. I’d already taken a few steps in this direction when the pandemic started. Belgium is an interesting country; they have a more alternative music scene there. Good news! De Parade has found an ingenious way of organising its touring theatre festival at a 1.5-metre distance. They are erecting four huge theatre tents in Moreelsepark for the public to enjoy two theatre shows and a drink and a bite to eat. You can choose between a dinner deal or a late night deal (or both if you’re planning on an extended stay!) The deals last 2.5 hours. There’s a different programme in each theatre tent, and the programmes change every few days. DE MAALTUIN & STERKWATER The concept of these travelling restaurants? A combination of excellent dining, enthralling stories and wonderful locations all rolled into one! The travelling restaurants are small-scale and completely COVID-proof, but be sure to book well in advance! Between 7 July and 1 August, you can dine with De Maaltuin at the former Soesterberg Airbase, which is now a nature reserve and home to countless species of rare plants, birds and insects. And from 20 August onwards, you can dine against the backdrop of the Utrecht Botanic Gardens. SterkWater will open its pop-up restaurant in special places along the water defence lines as part of the Ode to the Dutch Water Lines. This defence line was originally designed to protect the Western Netherlands from enemy attack from the south and east. In 2011, filmmaker John Chester and his wife Molly leave their work and city life behind to make their dream come true: trying to turn a piece of land just outside Los Angeles into a unique farm with a thriving, self-regulating ecosystem. This film documents their journey, and especially focuses on how hard it is to keep a farm running and all of the hardships, sadness and anger they face, but also the happy, beautiful moments and the relationships they build. On the edge of adulthood, Alma leaves her mother’s home in the Netherlands and travels to her native Bosnia to visit the father she’s never met. But nothing goes as planned. On the same evening, you can watch Mandibules, the latest film by king of absurdism Quentin Dupieux (Deerskin). Jean-Gab and Manu, two simple-minded friends, discover a giant fly in the trunk of their car. It doesn’t take long before they come up with the bright idea of t raining the beast, hoping to make tons of money with it. This French film has Dutch subtitles. Rumour has it that he always carried handcuffs, chains and rope in the boot of his car for unexpected photo opportunities. The place to buy: The local delicatessen Strovaii 1 on Lijnmarkt sells freshly made rolls, or you can select your own luxury picnic from a range of cheeses, charcuterie, nuts and olives. There’s a stock of Dutch wines and ciders in the basement, and a wide range of locally brewed beers. Another option is the Locals Utrecht 2 shop on Vismarkt. The place to eat: Although Park Lepelenburg is just around the corner, on a warm summer’s day it might be better to walk in the opposite direction. Along the canal, a new jetty will be built this year, where you can sit back and watch the boats and canoes as they sail past.

For Italian cheese and charcuterie, olives, tapenades or a freshly made roll, go to Tutti a Tavola 3 . Hinkelman 4 sells soup, quiches, cakes and flans, and Juuls Hummus 5 is all about Levantine cuisine; you can buy hummus with all kinds of toppings. The place to eat: Wilhelminapark is within easy reach, but if you’re not into formal parks, it might be worth biking or walking to Park Bloeyendaal. Plenty of birds, butterflies and dragonflies will be accompanying you in this lovely piece of unkempt urban nature.

DEER PARK The place to buy: You’ll find fresh cheeses, organic charcuterie, bread and a wide range of other organic products at Morty’s Kaas en Delicatessen 6 on Kanaalstraat. If your picnic basket isn’t quite full after visiting Morty’s, this street has plenty more food shops, such as Turkish bakers, Persepolis market 7 and patisserie Ayintap 8 . The place to eat: There’s a small park on the outskirts of the Lombok neighbourhood, next to Molen de Ster. But if you follow the water for a bit, you’ll find plenty of secluded spots to enjoy your picnic. For example, there’s a jetty near the Abel Tasman bridge, and a bench with a fabulous view across the water on Billitonkade. Park Oog in Al on the opposite bank is another good picnic spot, with the added attraction of a glimpse of the deer in the deer park.

The place to buy: Leckerick 9 on Händelstraat has all the ingredients for a tempting platter brimming with tasty snacks: from Brandt & Levie dry-cured sausages and nuts, to Dutch and foreign cheeses. If you can’t be bothered to select your own ingredients, order the standard platter (starts at 4 people). The place to eat: Bike or walk to the Amsterdam-Rijn canal. Head for the most northerly point of the Oog in Al neighbourhood, at the confluence of the Amsterdam-Rijn and the Merwede canal, and find yourself a nice spot on the grass. When you’ve had enough to eat, drop into the terrace of SOIA to watch the setting sun while sipping a nice glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail.

They also stock craft beers and special wines for every occasion. The place to eat: Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find Julianapark, where you’ll probably be joined by a few happy hens on your picnic blanket. The animal enclosure in this park is home to deer, swans, goats, peacocks, pigeons, guineafowl, sheep, ducks and alpacas! Alternatively, find a spot along the River Vecht, on Vechtplantsoen opposite the J.M. de Muinck Keizer bridge, for example. Or walk to Vechtdijk on the opposite bank.

Even by just looking at this place from the other side of the canal, it feels like you’re out on a picnic. Yet Roost aan de Singel is on a very convenient, chill ‘island’ in the heart of the city. It’s an excellent stop to grab a bite when you’re on a boat or canoe. It’s sunny till late in the evening, so sunglasses and sunscreen are a must. The beers and bites as well, so if you’re feeling peckish you can always swap your blanket in the grass for a table and chairs.

DURING A 4-MONTH-LONG JEWELLER INTERNSHIP IN ROTTERDAM, LAURA FELL FOR THE PURE CALMNESS OF UTRECHT AND THE CHARM OF A DUTCH GENTLEMAN. SHE NOW WORKS AS AN INDEPENDENT JEWELLER AND ALSO TEACHES THOSE WHO CRAVE CREATIVITY HOW TO MAKE APPEALING ACCESSORIES. By Anita Nánási

‘When I started my own jewellery collection, we moved back to Paris for one and half years. Because I’m an independent jeweller, I need to have a customer base, which I built there. But we realised that the big city was not for us anymore. Paris is really busy, noisy and stressful. People have no time, days are very long and life is very expensive. We like to take time to relax. In The Netherlands, people are more relaxed and have more me-time. I really like that Utrecht is small. You can be in the city to meet friends in no time, or hop on your bike and be in nature.’

CHALLENGING ‘Starting my mini company was not so difficult. I got a lot of help from my boyfriend who’s a more experienced freelancer. It’s still a bit stressful when you don’t speak the language. Also, the administration can be challenging. Arranging that according to the rules is a bit of a blur at first. Though I find it very convenient that you can do everything online, that you can get an appointment quickly and that the administration can be done in English.’

Laura’s favourites WAY TOO EARLY ‘I found it surprising that Dutch people eat so early. Some people have dinner at 5, while I used to eat at 8. It’s such a contrast: in France having dinner is really pleasurable. It might take an hour, or two to three hours when you have friends over. Here, dinner is just a thing you have to do in your day, before doing something else like working out or going to a sewing class. Dinner is just a moment to gain some energy for doing something else after. You don’t really have this cosiness of the southern countries.’

‘I have a feeling that anywhere you go on the planet, you will find the Dutch. They just have this desire to travel and be a bit uncomfortable. Lots of Dutch people criticise their own habits - that they do the same every day and everything is monotonous and comfortable. But they like to travel only with a backpack or a camper, while the French enjoy their luxury. The French just want to rest when they are on holiday. It’s a funny contrast.’

LAURA ESSAYIE JEWELLERY ‘When making a jewel, I like to start with one wire. It’s like a small sculpture. My inspiration comes from walking the streets. It can be anything: a bike rack, a bench, the urban furniture, some curves of a buidling... to me, they already are a jewel in itself. These images later evolve into something.’ lauraessayie.com ART DECO ‘At Louis Hartlooper Complex, it’s lovely that there’s someone at the beginning of the movie who tells you a story. It’s like a better version of your living room. And the radiates a soft, old fashioned feeling with all of its art deco.’ FRIENDLY Persepolis on Kanaalstraat is my absolute favourite shop for food. I can find anything I want there. The range of products is very wide and the people are really friendly. SEASONAL AND LOCAL ‘We can buy tomatoes all year round, but farming them is intensive and demanding on the planet. That’s why I’m trying to rediscover and buy seasonal, locally produced food. De Groentenakker offers just that.’

It’s not safe, but people do it anyway: jump into the canal on a hot summer’s day to cool off. In the 1970s, they did this in the canal opposite this playing field on Cervanteslaan, at the place where the Amsterdam-Rijn canal branches off from the Merwede canal. In the background, you can see the Vleutensebrug, an arched steel bridge that you could walk, bike or drive over to get to what is now the Leidsche Rijn district. In 2007, the bridge was replaced by a bigger, newer version known locally as ‘the yellow bridge’. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. THEATRE IN THE SAND From 12 to 18 July, there will be a theatre performing every evening, and every afternoon during the weekend. For example, singer Ellen ten Damme presents musical highlights during a performance that was especially made for this occasion. The Dutch Reisopera performs the cheerful and melancholy opera Magalone & Peter. Comedian Andries Tunru presents a sand edition of Laughing with a full mouth. And during the weekend, the Utrecht company Rake Klappen will play its kids performance Coup Coup, Bye Bye (6+) in the sand. Visit ssbu.nl for more information and to book your tickets. ‘The Outdoor Games’ will start on 3 July with a tournament of the Eredivisie Beach, the highest Dutch beach volleyball competition for men and women. The Eredivisie Beach consists of ten tournaments in city centres and at other beach volleyball events throughout the Netherlands. In the week that follows, the arena is used by sports clubs and schools. During the day, visitors can put their feet in the sand, or enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace.

Using Frank Zappa’s extensive private archive and with the help of more than 10,000 Zappa fans, Alex Winter created a striking portrait of the brilliant musician and composer from over a thousand hours of material. ‘I want to tell Frank’s story without making a biopic; to make a music doc without making a music doc. And I think that’s just how Frank would have wanted it.’

Black Couture, Beauty and Styles A fashion history focusing on black designers, models and sources of inspiration. UNTIL 15 AUG > Annex: Tabita Rezaire During Voices of Fashion, the Annex is taken over by Tabita Rezaire (1989), a French artist with Guyanese and Swedish roots. Rezaire makes video installations and performances in which she critically and playfully connects her artistry to alternative world views, healing methods and spirituality. UNTIL 29 AUG > The dolls pack their bags The Centraal Museum is being renovated, so a large part of the artworks will be relocated. Petronella de la Court’s beloved dollhouse also has to be temporarily moved to the depot. That is quite a job, because the house consists of 1,500 different parts. A miniature bookcase, a scale violin, a waffle iron of a few centimetres... Everything has to be filed, photographed, packed and prepared for the move one by one. Check out the moving process to discover how this works. PERMANENT > Lights on Wood Interactive lighting installation on the Utrecht Ship. PERMANENT > Rietveld and Van Baaren collection The French and Dutch paintings from the Van Baaren collection are juxtaposed with furniture pieces by Gerrit Rietveld. PERMANENT > Studio Dick Bruna Dick Bruna’s studio (he’s the creator of Miffy) has been moved from its location in Utrecht’s inner city to Centraal Museum. In this exhibition, residents share their personal stories and memories and show the social history - past and present - of this neighbourhood. PERMANENT > Museum collection The Dutch museum of backstreets and working class neighbourhoods will show you the two hundred yearhistory of the day-to-day life of the man in the street. This exhibition revolves around 150 years of Dutch railway posters and tells the history of railway travel in beautiful and colorful posters. The 120 posters, some of which have never been exhibited before, are an exceptional display of the development of design styles over the years. PERMANENT > The great discovery After descending 150 metres in a lift, you’ll step out into the early 19th century, a world filled with soot and steam. You’ll see De Arend (the eagle), the very first steam locomotive in the Netherlands. Listen to the special audio tour to hear all the stories. PERMANENT > Loaded trains In this exhibition, the museum remembers the forced transport of Jews, Roma and Sinti to extermination camps during World War II. This ongoing exhibition has been permanently installed in and around a baggage car found in Romania. Buy your ticket at the U-OV Service Store in the main hall of Utrecht Central Station. Children up to the age of 4 can travel for free on U-OV buses and trams. THE OV-CHIP CARD (OV-CHIPKAART) is a public transport card which is accepted by all operators in the Utrecht region. You can buy an anonymous card for € 7,50 at the ticket vending machines in the main hall of Utrecht Central Station. You can also get one at the Tourist Information Centre. The International Welcome Centre Utrecht Region (IWCUR) is located on the second floor of the Stadskantoor (Utrecht municipal offices). The staff helps international newcomers and residents with all their questions and paperwork regarding their move to the region, including formalities with the municipality and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). The impressive church organ, the wall of pews and the balustrade: there’s no escaping the fact that this is a place where church services used to be held. You could best describe BUNK Hotels as a cross between a hotel and a hostel.
