Welcome to Utrecht Despite COVID-19 still being part of our lives, the festival season is in full swing. Check out the book talks at the International Literature Festival Utrecht, watch films at the Dutch Film Festival, discover new music at Gaudeamus en visit some theatre performances at Tweetakt. The start of a new cultural season. On 11 and 12 September, cultural venues throughout the city open their doors to show you what they have to offer. Also, the pop up store Uitalage on Steenweg is open for your fix of intimate performances by local artists, a mini cinema for two, sneak previews of exhibitions and more. But we’re also venturing further afield. There’s a lovely nine-kilometre path that runs along the bank of the Leidsche Rijn. This canalised river was once an important part of the infrastructure, but it’s now a great place to enjoy the boats, bridges and farms along the banks. For the more adventurous hikers there’s the Utrechtse Waterlinie Wandeltocht, skirting the city of Utrecht and taking you through the surrounding rural areas passing some ancient forts.

Stereochemistry

In 1901 Jacobus van ’t Hoff (1852), who worked for his PhD in Utrecht, received the Nobel Prize for Physics for research into thermodynamics. But equally important was his discovery of stereochemistry, explained in a scientific mural on the side wall of Mother Goose Hotel on Ganzenmarkt. Stereochemistry, aka spatial chemistry, is the concept that molecules comprising the same atoms can take on different constructs, for example by mirroring each other. Sharing is in Utrecht’s DNA. As a Roman soldier, the patron saint of Utrecht Saint Martin tore his cloak in half to share with a beggar on the street. The red-and-white colours of his torn cloak still appear in the city’s coat of arms. On Saturday 17 October, World Poverty Day, people from all around Utrecht will be sitting down at tables together to share a meal and listen to each other’s stories like one big family. If you want to join them, you can order the ingredients and recipe for the meal via stadsdinerutrecht.nl. A pack to feed four people is free, but a voluntary contribution would be greatly appreciated. De Ster windmill

An oasis of tranquillity slap bang in the middle of the lively Lombok district. The miller gives guided tours on Saturdays, explaining the history and workings of the windmill, and introducing the sheep, goats and hens. The pigs Bella and Beer enjoy the extra attention and there are also regular performances by local musicians. And on Saturday 18 September, you can try your hand at jeu de boules in the Poules en Boules event. There will also be roast chicken, cold drinks and musical entertainment. Young Collectors Festival: Art is for Everyone The Young Collectors Circle aims to inspire a new generation of art collectors. Not only to enrich their own lives, but also to provide long-term support to the art sector. The Young Collectors Festivals are one of the ways they do this. On Saturday 9 October, collectors will open the doors to their private collections. They explain what attracted them to particular works of art, how addictive collecting can be, and which pieces would make them part willingly with their hard-earned savings. Bread at the nick

The Paardenkamp Foundation is a national retirement home and knowledge centre for old horses and ponies on the outskirts of Soest, just a 30-minute drive from Utrecht. Horse lovers can visit the horses and ponies at the Vosseveld and Het Gagelgat farms. Het Gagelgat also has a shop selling home-grown fresh vegetables and local products, and you can pick yourself a bunch of flowers in their meadow. The terrace of the Het Oude Paard tearoom (open from Wednesday to Sunday) has a lovely view of the fields, where the horses and ponies graze away their final years. Some of the proceeds from the tearoom go towards caring for the horses.

Admittedly it’s not really in Utrecht, but the bread baked by De Bakkert is definitely worth a short bike ride. This traditional baker is housed in the former police station in Bilthoven, which has been transformed into the temporary Buro Lou creative hotspot. De Bakkert is open from Wednesday to Saturday for all kinds of freshly baked products, ranging from wholegrain loaves and cinnamon buns to baguettes and brownies: everything that comes out of the oven is delicious. Try the white sourdough bread, which De Bakkert says best reflects the style of the baker in all its glory. And if you want to try baking your own bread, De Bakkert gives workshops too.

THIS CANALISED RIVER WAS ONCE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE, BUT IT’S NOW A GREAT PLACE TO RELAX AND ENJOY THE BOATS, BRIDGES AND FARMS ALONG ITS BANKS. AND THE VINEX VIBE... t’s actually a bit too soon to start this walk at Smakkelaarsveld 1 , as the area to the north of the station is still one big building site. If things go according to plan, next year this field will have morphed into Smakkelaarspark with three residential blocks in a green setting, and later on, the water of the Leidsche Rijn. The chaotic sea of bikes, where many of us swore and cursed while searching for our two-wheelers, will be wiped from our collective memory. And no-one will remember that until the late 19th century, this used to be an inland harbour.

We walk under the railway to Westplein. In another couple of years, the Leidsche Rijn will flow here again too. At the moment, you can’t see it until you’ve crossed the square to Leidseweg. This section of the Oude Rijn River was canalised in the 17th century. Canalisation means straightening the course of a river and making it deeper so that it is more easily navigable. Walking along the right-hand bank, you cross the friendly Molen De Ster, a reminder of the busy industrial area that used to be here. Don’t forget to wave at the pigs, Bella and Beer, as you pass. When we reach the neoclassical Rijksmuntgebouw 2 , we will be in one of the loveliest parts of Utrecht. Turn right after the bridge where the Leidsche Rijn and the Merwede canal briefly touch lips, and then left into Oog in Al park 3 . This used to be Dafne Schippersbrug

part of a country estate built on the Leidsche Rijn. In 1664, the eccentric squire Everard Meijster (known as the Mad Squire) took it over so that he could keep an eye on expansion plans for the city. Hence the name Oog in Al, which roughly translates as ‘Beady Eye’.

SHIPS & SHEEP

To the right of the park, there’s an avenue named after the squire which leads to the Dafne Schippersbrug 4 , a bridge over the Amsterdam-Rijn canal. We go in a southerly direction on the boulevard opposite towards the former municipality of Vleuten-De Meern. This municipality was swallowed up by Utrecht when it built the mega Vinex housing estate called Leidsche Rijn, named after the canal that cuts straight through it. Nowadays, you can relax on the canal bank on a sunny day and watch the freight ships on Verthorenkade. Passing the Aanvoerder pumping station 5 , with a meeting place for youth specially designed from weathering steel, we go under the Rhijnoord viaduct. If you ignore the zoom of the motorway, you suddenly find yourself plunged into idyllic village life. You see the Leidsche Rijn flowing along Rijksstraatweg, characteristic old farms and on the opposite side, Park Voorn 6 with its herd of peacefully grazing sheep. The park belongs to the pretty white townhouse opposite the Stadsdambrug. Cross the bridge and continue along Zandweg until you see J&B Grijpers on the opposite bank. Turn right onto the bike path. This is Langerak: the first housing estate in Leidsche Rijn, where the initial pioneers staked their claim some 23 years ago. Even diehard fans of the historical inner city have to admit that this neighbourhood has been tastefully

designed. It is spacious, green and the architecture is varied.

SWINGS

After crossing Langerakbaan, we walk straight ahead in front of Groenedijk 7 , behind the playground. You find yourself in authentic Dutch landscape here, with knotted willows lining the road and beautiful traditional old buildings. Turn left in front of Park Hoge Weide 8 , which owes its name to a few solid green humps, a great panorama and a fun swing park. Then it’s a bit of a trek across Groenedijk, where you’ll see the odd original country house dotted among the newly built homes. You can turn right onto Johanniterpad, or carry on for a few hundred metres to Castellum Hoge Woerd 9 . The archaeology museum has the contours of the Roman fort that stood here 2,000 years ago. The top attraction is an ancient wooden ship that was found 3 kilometres further along. There is also an urban farm and café. We continue through Parkwijk via Johanniterpad. Turn left into Pauwoogvlinder at the somewhat bare Groot Zandveld, cross ’t Zand and turn right onto the bike path parallel to the road. This takes us to Terwijde station 10 , where you can take the mainline train back to Utrecht Centraal. Castellum Hoge Woerd

How inclusive, diverse and sustainable are Utrecht’s cultural institutions? This is the question being addressed by Siham el Ouazizi (28) and other critical friends from the PACT Utrecht network. She conducted her graduation research project at the Utrecht Municipal Archive. ‘This opened my eyes to the urgency of topics like inclusion and diversity in the cultural sector. I’d always assumed that the sector was fairly well advanced in this respect. I’m now working at PACT Utrecht to raise awareness of these topics in various cultural institutions, such as the Netherlands Film Festival, Theater Utrecht and RAUM.’ When she started at PACT, Siham was shocked by some of the comments and the frequency with which she encountered institutional racism. ‘During conversations at PACT, it became increasingly clear to me that racism was all around. These days, I try to focus on the things that I can do to improve the situation. After all, the accumulation of lots of small steps will eventually bring about change. Being able to say what I see and what I think as a critical friend is very important to me.’ pactutrecht.nl

‘Inclusion is in the DNA of De Voorkamer (Kanaalstraat 225), a cultural meeting space in Utrecht. You meet all kinds of people there, from undocumented immigrants and expats, to students and old Utrecht locals. It was when I was helping to organise Eid ul Adha that I first saw the two worlds coming together. This is what Eid is all about: sharing, eating together with people from different socio-economic classes, closing the social divide. De Voorkamer organises this kind of thing really well - the rest of the cultural sector should look and learn. We run language cafés in various languages, as well as a course in storytelling. There’s an open, warm atmosphere: we translate for each other during meetings and it’s okay to be late.’

‘For a lot of people, the 24 Oktoberplein holds traumatic memories because of the shooting incident in a tram in March 2019. I compiled an exhibition for the Utrecht Archive about the sea of soft toys, children’s drawings and letters that were left at the spot of the shooting. One letter particularly touched my heart: a man said that as a Muslim, he condoned the incident. He left his phone number so that other people from Utrecht could call him if they wanted. A monument has now been erected to the victims. Although the incident has left a scar on Utrecht, it also demonstrates the solidarity of the people who live here.’

A small world ‘I have good memories of Kanaleneiland, the neighbourhood where I grew up. Social cohesion was the norm. Everyone knew each other and people’s doors were always open. This kind of cohesion seems to be making a comeback. If you go to the bridge at dusk and look across to this part of the city, you see the beauty of Kanaleneiland and the peace it radiates.’ Kanaleneiland

Arabic vibe ‘To me, of all the restaurants in Hoog Catharijne, Comptoir Libanais has the most character. They’ve managed to create a real Arabic vibe. And of course the food’s great. I’m a vegan and the falafel wrap with hummus and homemade rosewater is my favourite.’

Healing ‘During the coronavirus pandemic, I spent a lot of time at Lage Vuursche. It’s a great place to walk, very peaceful. And the trees inspire me. I once read a study that claimed that trees in a forest help each other if one of them is sick: they send therapeutic minerals to the ailing tree via their roots until it heals. This is what human sustainability is all about: helping people who find themselves at a disadvantage.’

Sites of Memory presents a journey through time to the colonial past. Artists from South Africa and the Netherlands give their vision on this topical subject in song, poetry, dance, visual arts and theatre. During this interactive walk, in which live performances are interspersed with 360 degrees audio and video, you will be taken on a journey along various historical locations where you will gain more insight into how our colonial past affects the present and our image for the future. The latest performance by Rosa Ensemble is an off-the-rails pop concert, in collaboration with director Ko van den Bosch. The eponymous band Waanzee is a double-headed rock monster with a driving groove and a clear message: to rise up against the multinationals destroying our planet and to rise up for a new society. PILOT PC

Together with top dancers from the Fractal Collective, Duda Paiva Company has drawn inspiration from the work of Alair Gomes. This Brazilian photographer had an exceptional talent for revealing remarkable details in the chaotic world around him. He and his tele-lens took perfect photos of the male body. Gomes called his series ‘Sonatinas’. His work has now been brought to life in an extraordinary fusion of the Duda Paiva Company’s magical foam rubber dolls and the acrobatic urban dance performed by the dancers of the Fractal Collective.

HERITAGE DAY (OPEN MONUMENTENDAG) Make a note of Saturday 11 September as this is the annual Heritage Day. Dozens of monuments and listed buildings that are normally closed to the public will be opening their doors to visitors. As usual, the Inktpot and Neude Library are among the must-sees. Gaudeamus

Music lovers with an adventurous mind can once again get their fill of brand new music and experiments by young and upcoming composers, (sound) artists, performers and musicians – keeping a 1.5 meter distance. From 8 to 12 september, Gaudeamus festival presents no less than 51 concerts, multi-disciplinary performances, workshops and lectures on 14 locations all over town. According to tradition, Gaudeamus presents an overview of talented young and upcoming composers, such as Annika Socolofsky and Jenny Beck from the US, Gen Tanaka from Japan and Matthew Ricketts from Canada. The festival also looks far beyond the borders of western composed music: from the juggling concert Sounds Like Juggling in Fort Ruigenhoek (in cooperation Tweetakt) and the digital opera Follow about ‘fake’ and other news to the Catching Cultures Orchestra that was founded in several refuge centres. In addition to that, the programme Electronica for Lovers in De Nijverheid focuses on the connection between electronics and physicality. However, the bar is about to close its doors for good. Kanaalweg, enclosed by tower blocks, football pitches and the Merwede canal, now features a cosy urban garden. What used to be a patchwork of allotments owned by local residents, is now a place providing school gardens, a picking field and vegetable patches run by social organisations, including Utrecht’s very first food forest. On reading the appeal for volunteers, driven by curiosity and a longing for physical exercise, I decided to sign up. It was full speed ahead on my first workday, a cold and rainy Wednesday in March. Trees had been delivered: two pears, two apples, two walnuts and two plums. A peach tree and hazelnut bushes also had to be planted, all under the watchful eye of the coordinator and tree expert

Charles. Using a spade and an auger, we dug deep holes and carefully lowered the roots into the soil. It was then the sun’s turn to do its magic, but unfortunately, spring was late coming this year. So we strapped the tall, narrow trunks to support them during the strong winds that raged over the terrain.

HIGH TO LOW

The concept of food forestry has grown in popularity in recent years. We are gradually realising that for environmental reasons, it is better to produce our food closer to home. We also want to understand more about what we are eating and last but least, it’s nice not to have to rely on supermarkets. A food forest combines farming and nature. The idea is to use

the least possible land to grow the most possible food (for man, insects, small mammals and birds), thereby creating a biodiverse system that will eventually sustain itself. This is known as permaculture. In order to harvest food on fewer square metres of land, you work from high to low: shrubs underneath trees, and herbs or low-growing crops on the ground. The team behind the food forest on Kanaalweg came up with the initial plans for the former pumpkin field three years ago. ‘We wanted to create a plot of land where a multitude of plants and shrubs would produce food for man and beast,’ explains co-initiator Alexandra van Prehn. ‘It would become a place where you could harvest edible and medicinal plants, wander through the trees without having to leave the city and where the neighbourhood could quite literally reap the rewards of our work.’

PROFUSION OF NATURAL LIFE

A group of volunteers takes it in turns to work the land. A pond is being dug and we are building walls from broken paving stones to provide shelter for insects, such as wild bees. Regular volunteer Florian and I are currently sowing broad beans in the clay soil. They’re not intended for eating (although I recently made my first ever broad bean salad), but to serve as a green fertiliser. The leaves and roots of these green fertilisers improve the structure of the soil, add nutrients and generally stimulate soil life. One Saturday, our group visited the Haarzuilens food forest, where they’ve transformed six hectares of boring agricultural land into a hugely diverse forest in the space of just five years. Enclosed by hedges, the land is now used to grow nuts, berries, herbs and fruit. We chewed the leaves of the mahogany tree and savoured the strong aniseed taste of wild fennel. The ponds are home to salamanders and natterjack toads, and they’ve even spotted a grass snake. There is a huge insect population and over twenty species of bird have nested there. While we were there, we spotted stonechats and sand martins

swooping over the meadows. This is exactly the profusion of natural life that we hope to generate on Kanaalweg.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

Back on home territory a few days later, I was replanting some turf to make room for plants and flowers that would attract insects. Just as I was planting some blueweed, I heard someone cry out: ‘Over here!’ I saw Charles and Alexandra staring upwards from beneath one of the small trees we’d planted in March. Charles pointed to a branch above our heads. And there, bold as brass, hung one lonely walnut, swathed in its immature green shell. We stood there gazing in admiration at this flourishing start to our budding food forest. Patience is a virtue.

ART SCENE ‘I decided to visit Utrecht for a weekend before I moved here from Germany. I remember it was eight in the evening on my first day when I went to Neude and saw many tables on the square. People were having a drink outside, having fun. It just looked so cool! In Germany, there are of course the biergartens, but here people just seemed so open. A small scale jazz festival was going on that night, so you could have food and drinks with some nice jazz music playing in the background. I saw families and young people enjoying their time together. I noticed I was doing the

They serve the beer in tiny glasses so it stays cold longer. SWEET TREAT Black Brew Coffee House is a very nice place to work. The coffee and pancakes are delicious. I go there after my workout to treat myself to pancakes. It’s all about balance! BOATHOUSES I love to walk around the Zuilen area with friends and colleagues because of its parks and canals. I also love looking at the boathouses. They look so nice. I would like to live in a boathouse like that too.

shopping The Galeries Modernes department store, built in 1941 on the corner of Lange Viestraat and Oudegracht, used to be an iconic shopfront in Utrecht. The Dutch shops drew inspiration from the Parisian department stores with their imposing glass shop windows and displays, which people spent hours admiring. NO EASTER SUNDAY FOR QUEERS This is an adaptation of a poem by the South African poet Koleka Putuma. Central to the performance is the love affair between two women, Napo and Mimi, and Napo’s relationship with her father, who is a pastor. The two lovers were killed during a baptism ritual on Easter Sunday. Because they want people to never forget how and why they died, they return to the church on the day of their death through the pastor’s subconscious. The church choir takes

the spectators into the church service by providing commentary.

SMEER THE OCHRE In this dance performance, the makers investigate where modernity and tradition, gender and identity meet. A group of Ovahimbas gather in Katutura, the black township of Windhoek in Namibia. They are together for a healing ritual. The group consists mainly of men, but there are also two women. One undergoes a change; she becomes an older man. The other woman observes from a distance what is happening. All this is set against the hustle and bustle of a contemporary African city. > 9 October

Swinging Time A bubble-gum pink clock featuring a girl sitting in front of a mirror, or a bright blue version which seems to house a floating monkey: Utrecht-based artist Jackie Sleper was inspired by the concept of time for her new exhibition, in which ancient clocks with a modern twist play a central role. Sleper has put the complexities of the coronavirus pandemic behind her and embarked on a new phase, in which there is room for cautious optimism and hope of continued progress.

Nowadays, it is transformed into an exhibition space for art, located at De Nijverheid. EXBUNKER 4 - 26 SEP > HKU Vers: Mandy van den Berg Virtual installation in which childhood memories merge with strange creatures, objects and shapes. Practicalities Tourist Information Centre At the foot of the Dom Tower, you’ll find the Tourist Information Centre. They are more than happy to help you book tickets for heading up the Dom Tower, tours or bikes to get around the city. Of course, they can also tell you about everything you can do in and around Utrecht. > open daily from 10.00 to 17.00, Domplein 9

Getting around BY BIKE > Cycling is the easiest and fastest way for getting around town. There are several bike renting spots in the city centre and around the station. Bikes are also for rent at the Tourist Information Centre. BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT > The U-OV day ticket (Dagkaart) is valid for one day (€ 6,20), 2 days (€ 9,25) or 3 days (€ 11,85) on all buses and trams. Buy your ticket at the U-OV Service Store in the main hall of Utrecht Central Station. Children up to the age of 4 can travel for free on U-OV buses and trams. THE OV-CHIP CARD (OV-CHIPKAART) is a public transport card which is accepted by all operators in the Utrecht region. You can buy an anonymous card for € 7,50 at

the ticket vending machines in the main hall of Utrecht Central Station. You can also get one at the Tourist Information Centre. Please note that it’s mandatory to wear a face mask in all buses, trams and trains. THE UTRECHT REGION PASS provides access to the entire public

THE IWCUR IS THERE TO HELP The International Welcome Centre Utrecht Region (IWCUR) is located on the second floor of the Stadskantoor (Utrecht municipal offices). The staff helps international newcomers and residents with all their questions and paperwork regarding their move to the region, including formalities with the municipality and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
