Welcome to Utrecht

© Koen Peters

Of course, sipping a refreshing drink while relaxing on an urban beach (such as Strand Oog in Al) is a good way to spend a hot summer’s day. But there are other ways to escape the chaos of the city in the summertime. Hidden behind the walls and houses of the historical city centre, you will find secret squares and hidden courtyard gardens where time seems to stand still. Another good idea is a visit to one of the centuryold forts scattered all around the city. Increasingly more of these former defences, built to protect the city from attack, have been given a new lease of life. Some of them are real gems.

Strand Oog in Al Kanaalweg 199

MAG Utrecht also features a calendar with up-to-date information on the festivals, theatre, art, movies and music events taking place in the city. And we have a useful map, on which you can find all the places we mention in the magazine. So get to know the special places, the best bars and restaurants and the full scope of cultural activities, whether you’re in the heart of the city or one of the suburbs. We hope you have a terrific time!

THINGS TO DO & PLACES TO GO

© Saris & Den Engelsman

‘UTRECHT IS MY FAVOURITE CITY IN THE WORLD.’

KIDS Aangewaaid One dancer, one musician and eventually even an audience come together to compile a story about the wonderful things that simply cross our paths. This improvisation performance is packed with live music, visual art and dance, and is suitable for children of two and over. > 6 August, Podium Hoge Woerd podiumhogewoerd.nl

Connor Newnam From Phoenix (United States), lived in Utrecht as an exchange student ‘I’ve studied in Utrecht for a year and now I’m back for a short visit. Utrecht is my favourite city in the world. There are so many things you can stumble upon without even trying. For example, I love walking through all the tiny alleyways of the neighbourhood streets. I also love the coffee culture. My favourite place to get a coffee? Definitely Coffee Company on Vismarkt.’ coffeecompany.nl

MUSIC Sheesham and Lotus & ‘Son Does anyone still play music from the ‘roaring twenties’ these days? Yes - Sheesham and Lotus & ‘Son! This band can transform any audience into a heaving mass of conga fiends using a violin, a banjo, a sousaphone and an arsenal of strange, obscure wind instruments from a bygone era. To complete the experience, the musicians themselves look as if they’ve stepped out of a Buster Keaton movie. > 14 July, dB’s dbstudio.nl

FESTIVALS & EVENTS Women’s EURO 2017 This is the first time in history that the Netherlands will host the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, the European football championship for women. What’s happening? ‘WE TRY TO FIND A PLACE TO DANCE EVERYWHERE WE GO.’

Mateja Rybiczka-Tesulov From Vienna (Austria), PhD-student at Utrecht University ‘We’ve been dancing the Lindy Hop for four years now. It’s quite an international scene, so we try to find a place to dance wherever we go. Every Wednesday, there are swing dance classes in Winkel van Sinkel called ‘Hopspot’. You can just drop in and dance. Also, it’s a very good way to meet new people.’ dewinkelvansinkel.nl swinginutrecht.nl

VARIOUS Church Watching in Utrecht The Dom Tower is obviously one of the highlights, but there are lots more beautiful churches in Utrecht. You can visit most churches free of charge during the summer months and there’s usually a voluntary guide to tell you more about the history of these ancient houses of prayer. Check the site for an overview of the churches taking part and a map. > From 23 June to 9 September, various locations kerkenkijken.nl

‘YOU CAN PLAY GAMES WITH PEOPLE FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE WORLD.’ Roman Rybiczka From Vienna (Austria), looking for a job in food technology ‘I like to go to the board game nights, organised by game shop Subcultures. It’s every Monday evening, in a wharf cellar called ‘In De Ruimte’ on Oudegracht. You can play all kinds of games, with people from every corner of the world.’ subcultures.nl

MOVIES The Big Sick Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and writer Emily V. Gordon, this movie tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan). However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. > The Big Sick will be screened from 13 July in the Louis Hartlooper Complex hartlooper.nl

Red Monster Dress, Bas Kosters

Stefan Reiterer From Vienna (Austria), visiting Utrecht for a few days ‘My girlfriend’s sister defended her PhD-thesis yesterday. The ceremony was in the University Hall on Domplein, a beautiful building. Afterwards, we had dinner in restaurant C’est Ça in Bollenhofsestraat. The chef mainly cooks with seasonal produce, so the menu is a surprise. It was an interesting, but very good experience.’ restaurant-cestca.nl

Secret squares hidden and

courtyard gardens

HIDDEN BEHIND THE WALLS AND HOUSES OF THE HISTORICAL CITY CENTRE, YOU WILL FIND BEAUTIFUL GREEN OASES WHERE TIME SEEMS TO STAND STILL. PERFECT SPOTS TO ESCAPE THE CHAOS OF THE CITY IN THE SUMMERTIME. By Dieuwke de Boer

W

e start by walking northwards along Oudegracht to Bemuurde Weerd OZ, continuing on to Keizersgracht. Go down the steps on the left to Jan van Lingtuin, a courtyard garden nestling between the houses with a view across the Vecht river. The garden was named after Jan van Ling, who ‘adopted’ this green space in the 1970s and tended as if it were his own garden. Walk back to Bemuurde Weerd OZ and if you haven’t had breakfast, pop into Meneer Peer, a cosy café reminiscent of a living room. If it’s warm, you can take your breakfast outside onto the canal-side deck. Walk along Oudegracht to Mariaplaats. Between the two HKU University of the Arts buildings, you’ll see the entrance to Pandhof Sinte Marie. This is all that remains of the former Maria Church, which was demolished in the eighteenth century. Prepare to be enchanted, not only by the flowers, herbs and butterflies, but also by the wonderful music that floats out through the open windows of the HKU building. Mariaplaats itself has plenty of places to catch your breath, including Café Elize.

Andreashof

Behind Springweg, via Andreasstraat

Walk into Springweg and turn right into Andreasstraat. Halfway down, turn into an alleyway between numbers 19 and 21. Go through the iron gate and you’ll get to Andreashof, a small green square enclosed by houses. Back on Springweg, turn right and then left into Lange Smeestraat. Halfway along this street, take a quick look at the Dorstige Harthof, which gives a nice view of the Dom Tower in the distance. Zuilenstraat and Schalkwijkstraat take you to the Bruntenhof garden. This communal garden served the Bruntskameren, fifteen one-room houses that the Utrecht lawyer Frederik Brunt had built in the grounds of his own house in 1621. They were intended for poor widows, who lived there for free. The

residents look after the courtyard garden themselves, and you are welcome to go in if the gate is open. Go through Park Lepelenburg, Kromme Nieuwegracht and Achter de Dom to get to Domplein. The entrance to Pandhof Domkerk is between the church and the University Hall. This mediaeval cloister garden has a splendid view of the Dom Tower and Dom Church. Walk under the Dom Tower and turn left just before the bookshop to reach the final destination: Flora’s Hof. This courtyard garden is on the very spot where the Bishop of Utrecht’s Palace once stood. A green oasis of peace and tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle of the city. The perfect place to finish this walk.

Food mecca ‘Utrecht is slowly growing into a food mecca. I love Kimmade on Mariastraat and Oudegracht. The food is delicious and 100% authentic Vietnamese. And I should know, because I’m Vietnamese. My favourite place for coffee is The Village on Voorstraat. When our bakery/studio was still in the city centre, I used to go there every morning. The owners are insanely passionate about their work, which makes listening to their stories very inspiring.’

DE STIJL

MONDRIAAN TO DUTCH DESIGN Utrecht and Amersfoort are brimming with activities showcasing the art movement De Stijl, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017. LEARN TO SUP Paddling while standing up on a surfboard through the Utrecht canals: this is SUPping. You can learn how to do it at SUP School Domstad. A qualified instructor will spend two hours teaching you the basics of paddling and keeping your balance on the board. Once you’ve mastered the basic skills, you’re ready to go and explore the rest of the Utrecht canals. You can book a lesson or tour (in English too!) via the website. A CANOE TRIP If you fancy a gentle paddle through the Utrecht canals, hire a canoe from Kanoverhuur Utrecht in the centre of town. But if you’re feeling more adventurous, then bike to De Rijnstroom (or take the number 12 bus from Utrecht Centraal) and hire a canoe to paddle through Kromme Rijn and explore the serene area to the east of Utrecht. Fort aan de Klop

CENTURY-OLD FORTS ARE SCATTERED ALL AROUND THE CITY, SOME OF THEM REAL GEMS. INCREASINGLY MORE OF THESE FORMER DEFENCES, BUILT IN THE 18TH CENTURY TO PROTECT THE CITY FROM ATTACK, HAVE BEEN GIVEN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE. THEY ARE PART OF THE NEW DUTCH WATER LINE, WHICH IS NOMINATED TO BE ON THE UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LIST. By Dieuwke de Boer

lthough Fort aan de Klop is in the city, it still manages to be a green oasis. This fort is on the Vecht river, bordering the Overvecht district. You can camp in the grounds, spend a night in the inn or simply come to enjoy the peace and quiet. It’s also a great place to spend a sultry summer evening dining on the terrace. Tuesday to Sunday are Summer Barbecue Evenings. You’d better book if you want to guarantee getting a table. Fort Vechten is just a short and very pleasant cycle-ride away from Utrecht. It was the second biggest fort in the New Dutch Water Line, a typical

Dutch defence system of adjoining polders that could be flooded to keep enemies at bay. The Waterlinie museum explains exactly how this defence system worked (also in English). And thanks to virtual reality, you can even make a parachute jump across the water line. Close to Fort Vechten you’ll find Fort Rhijnauwen, the largest fort in the New Dutch Water Line. This fort, hidden in the forest between Utrecht and Bunnik, was closed to the public for many years and has evolved into a valuable area of natural beauty. It’s home to many species of plants and animals, from rare flowers and unusual toad-

TASTE OF LOMBOK

IJSSALON DAM

Ahmet Akbulut: ‘We have around twentyfour flavours a day and even more choice in hot weather. All our ice cream is made from natural ingredients, with no artificial colourings or flavourings. I sell typical Dutch flavours, as well as unique flavours such as baklava and Maghreb ice cream. Discerning customers will detect a slight taste of the Lombok district in my ice cream. I can experiment as much as I like, as this district offers so many different flavours and cultures.’ > Damstraat 45 facebook.com/ijssalondam

Marjolein Merkens: ‘Il Mulino is a real family business. My parents started the ice cream parlour a couple of doors away in 1983. It’s been in this building since 1987 and I now run it with my cousin. Carlina de Lorenzo: ‘We have twenty-seven different flavours to choose from every day. They always include a limited edition, which is only available for one week. Customers sometimes give us fruit from their own gardens for us to turn it into ice cream. This is often the nicest fruit, as it’s fresh, ripe and hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides.’ > Poortstraat 93 lekkerijs.nl

IJS & ZOPIE

Myrna Brandt: ‘The owner of IJs & Zopie used to be a professional rower. He started the business because his nutritionist advised him to eat ice cream but all the ice cream parlours in Utrecht closed for the winter months. IJs & Zopie is open all year and fifty percent of the profits go to the Orca student rowing club. We also stock the entire range of Tony’s Chocolonely bars. Customers come from far and wide just to taste the Tony’s caramel-sea salt ice cream.’ > Twijnstraat 79 ijsenzopie.nl

EAT & DRINK

Jan Rudolf Westerveld: ‘In 2011, my girlfriend and I decided to emigrate to France after the bank I worked in reorganised and I lost my job. I’ve always loved ice cream so we decided to open an ice cream parlour/lunch room. We’re back in Utrecht now, and this is Vorst’s fourth season. There are always eighteen different flavours, all hand-made. If someone fancies a scoop of brownie ice cream, I start by making the mix for the brownies.’ > Prins Hendriklaan 6 ijssalonvorst.nl
