FESTIVAL Utrecht local beer festival
What’s happening? THINGS TO DO & PLACES TO GO
During this seventh edition of the Utrecht local beer festival, you can try beer brewed at the numerous microbreweries in and around the city. Every bar has one or two different draft beers. The best way to sample different beers is to work out a beer route in advance using the special menus you can pick up in every bar. > 3, 4 and 5 November, various bars in the city centre streekbierfestival.nl
KIDS Arrival of Sinterklaas On 5 December, the Netherlands celebrates Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas). Because he is the patron saint of children, the celebrations logically revolve around children, and giving them lots of presents. On Sunday 19 November, Sinterklaas’ steamboat arrives from Spain (where he lives) and docks on Weerdsluis after touring the Utrecht canals. He then mounts his trusty white horse, Amerigo, and continues along his way accompanied by his helpers (Piets). His route finishes on Domplein, where there are plenty of activities for children. > 19 November, Weerdsluis and Domplein intochtutrecht.nl

Daniel Pennifold From the United Kingdom, just moved to Utrecht ‘We’re moving to the Netherlands from the UK because of Brexit. We were very lucky to find an apartment in the city centre and I hope to find a job in finance. I’ve been to Utrecht a few times before and I love the city. There are a lot of good bars and cafés. One of our favourites is Luc on Voor Clarenburg.’ lucutrecht.nl
‘UTRECHT ALREADY FEELS LIKE HOME.’ MOVIES Wonder Wheel The latest Woody Allen film, set in the beachside neighbourhood of Coney Island in the 1950s, revolves around Ginny (Kate Winslet), the wife of a carousel operator (James Belushi). She perks up when she falls for a handsome lifeguard, Mickey (Justin Timberlake). But when her husband’s estranged daughter (Juno Temple) resurfaces and also sets her sights on Mickey, things turn sour. > Wonder Wheel will be screened from 21 December in the Louis Hartlooper Complex hartlooper.nl
‘ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES IS LUC ON VOOR CLARENBURG.’
Ashley Pennifold From China, just moved to Utrecht ‘It’s my first time in Utrecht, but it already feels like home. I’m eager to find out the history behind all the old buildings in the city centre. We stayed in Stayokay on Neude last night. I would recommend staying here, because it’s a very vibrant, welcoming place.’ stayokay.com

What’s happening? MUSIC Songhoy Blues Garba Touré, guitarist of the African ‘desert blues band’ Songhoy Blues, was forced out of northern Mali by jihadists in 2012. He took his guitar when he left, and later decided to make music that reminded him of his home country to help him and other refugees come to terms with their displacement. It’s get-upand-dance music, despite his eventful life story. > 16 November, TivoliVredenburg tivolivredenburg.nl
‘THE SOUND IS GREAT IN TIVOLI VREDENBURG.’ Giuliano Bastianelli From Italy, visiting Utrecht for a few days ‘We went to a concert of the American band Bon Iver in TivoliVredenburg yesterday evening, which we enjoyed very much. The venue is amazing: the sound is great and everything was very well organised. We had a poke bowl in Poké Perfect on Korte Jansstraat before the concert, because we fancied something healthy. Masa Pucko and Jerca Debevec From Slovenia, visiting Utrecht for a few days ‘If you want some peace and quiet, you should cycle to De Haar Castle in Haarzuilens. It’s like a fairy-tale. We took a tour of the castle and the surrounding gardens and park. You can even feed the animals that walk around there. Afterwards, we had ‘kroketten’ at Koetshuis de Haar. The village of Haarzuilens is also worth a visit.’ kasteeldehaar.nl
‘VISITING DE HAAR CASTLE IS LIKE A FAIRY-TALE.’
As the days grow colder and shorter, Theater Kikker begins compiling a programme of the best, strangest and most controversial productions by young theatre makers for its Wintercollectie festival. Four of the shows are suitable for non-Dutch speakers. The cooperative Firma Draak searches for the ‘absolute truth’ in a life-size cube. And the audio-visual performance by director Robin Coops explores the manipulability of mankind and the value of imperfection. St Maarten THE FEAST OF ST MAARTEN, THE PATRON SAINT OF UTRECHT, IS STILL WIDELY CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER, PARTICULARLY IN UTRECHT. IN THE OLDEN DAYS, THE NEW VINTAGE OF WINE WAS UNCORKED ON 11 NOVEMBER, THE BISHOP’S NAME DAY. Sint Maarten’s Parade Utrecht and St Maarten, the city’s patron saint, have been connected for hundreds of years. In early November, the city becomes a stage for countless activities and celebrations, with the St Maarten’s Parade as the ultimate highlight: a unique parade full of home-made lanterns, music and light sculptures winding their way through the historic town centre.
A
s early as the eighth century, a tiny church was dedicated to St Maarten on the current Domplein. St Maarten was known for his benevolence. According to the legend, he was so taken by the plight of a poor vagrant that he decided to cut his expensive cassock in two. He gave one half to the vagrant, and kept the other half as it was officially owned by Rome. The red and white of the city coat of arms and flag of Utrecht are said to refer to the red colour of the cassock and the white of the Saint’s undergarments, which became visible when he shared his cassock with the vagrant. The eighth-century church didn’t survive, but there is now another church dedicated to St Maarten: the Dom Church. The bishop is depicted in the church’s bronze doors.
And the walls of the Pandhof, the cloistered garden of the Dom Church, are a sort of stone comic book with St Maarten in the leading role. The sculptures in the triangles above the windows tell the story of his life. Start at the entrance on Achter de Dom if you want to ‘read’ the story in chronological order. On Achter de Dom, you’ll also find Petit Clos. It’s not a wine bar, but you can still buy wine and they organise monthly tasting sessions. We walk from Pandhof to Maartensbrug, one of Utrecht’s oldest bridges. The bridge got its name from its original function as a path to the entrance of the Dom Church. We turn left across Lichte Gaard to Donkere Gaard, where you’ll find Talud 9. If you’re not quite ready for a glass of wine, they serve coffee too. Good coffee, as it was officially proclaimed the best in Utrecht

The walk continues along Ledig Erf to the southern end of Twijnstraat, where wine bar Zies is calling. Q&A WITH JULIA RABIN By Dieuwke de Boer
‘I'M A BIG FAN OF GOOD COFFEE.’
Julia Rabin (38) and her partner Remco Carstens are the proud owners of Juuls Hummus in Baanstraat, close to Wilhelmina park. Everything here revolves around fresh hummus, like Julia used to eat when she was growing up in Israel. The menu includes dishes based on hummus, supplemented with hot and cold toppings such as grilled aubergines, chickpeas with lemon, pulled chicken and braised meat. > Juuls Hummus Baanstraat 1 juulshummus.nl

Buurten
De Haar Castle
Comfort food ‘The poké bowls with fresh fish and vegetables at Poké Delicious on Biltstraat are a firm favourite with us. You could describe this as comfort food, just like our hummus bowls. We also like going to Buurten in Oost on Burgemeester Reigerstraat, opposite our food shop. It’s a relaxed, childfriendly place. And they have delicious burgers. I don’t often eat meat, but when I do, it’s there! Afterwards, we like to treat ourselves to an ice cream from Roberto Gelato on Poortstraat.’
Playgrounds ‘We love being out of doors. The area around De Haar Castle is fabulous, Broodnodig
for example. There’s a petting farm there, where we want to take the children. Our two children like nothing better than going to a playground. The Torteltuin in Kwartelstraat, close to Grift park, is one of their favourites, but we often end up in the Bosspeeltuin in Máxima park.’
Coffee ‘I’m a big fan of good coffee. Broodnodig on Burgemeester Reigerstraat, next to the railway, is one of our favourite places. And a food blogger I follow on Instagram introduced me to a new coffee bar in Rivierenwijk, a district to the south of the city centre: Ohøj on Rijnlaan. It’s an espresso bar run by an American couple and everything revolves around coffee. It’s all in the flavour.’ Máximapark

This stage show by Ulrike Quade Company and Jo Strømgren revolves around the life of the fashion icon Coco Chanel. Best known for the string of men she had affairs with, her biography sketches a picture of a shrewd, successful business woman who started life in an orphanage and eventually found her way into the highest circles of the French elite. Someone who made her designs a symbol of emancipation. This is a show that turns people into fashion, clothes into bodies and bodies into mannequins.

In 1964, while on a short trip to Paris, the American writer and artlover James Lord (Armie Hammer) is asked by his friend, the worldrenowned artist Alberto Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush), to sit for a portrait. The process, Giacometti assures Lord, will take only a few days. Flattered and intrigued, Lord agrees. What begins as a straightforward portrait session stretches out to days of fruitless work as Giacometti struggles to finish the painting. > Final Portrait will be screened from 7 December in movie theatre ‘t Hoogt and Louis Hartlooper Complex hoogt.nl hartlooper.nl
SUBURBICON IS RIFE WITH BLACKMAIL, TREACHERY AND REVENGE.
This is Suburbicon, a picture-perfect American town populated by polite families, with pretty front gardens and elegant houses. Gardner and Rose Lodge (Matt Damon and Julianne Moore) live there with their ten-year-old son. A violent robbery at the home of the Lodge family lifts the lid on some sinister secrets that this model family would rather have kept hidden. Suburbicon is rife with blackmail, treachery and revenge, and that’s just the beginning. White Cowbell Oklahoma This Canadian band might play small venues, but they certainly pack a mean punch. Pounding guitars, cowboy hats, bad-taste moustaches and power tools, such as angle grinders and chain saws: you’ll see it all at a White Cowbell Oklahoma live show. Their shows are full of seventies influences, and may remind you of performances by bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and KISS. Great gigs Tamino Although barely twenty, Belgian singersongwriter Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad (or Tamino for short) is packing in the crowds in Belgium. Pyke Koch (1901-1991) was one of the main proponents of magic realism (or neo-realism) in the Netherlands. In the early nineteen-thirties, he made his name as an artist who used his perfect technique to create his own sinister world. This exhibition displays Koch’s work in the context of his contemporaries, providing a deeper understanding of the period between the two World Wars. While visiting Italy, Koch developed a sympathy for fascism. This resulted in him not being allowed to exhibit his work for one year after the war. However, the work of the artist, who spent most of his life in Utrecht, continued to thrive. > from 18 November, Centraal Museum centraalmuseum.nl

On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December, a part of the city centre is transformed into a winter paradise to warm the cockles of your heart. There’s a ‘home-made’ Christmas market on Mariaplaats, where local tradesmen and -women sell their home-made wares, and the Streekmarkt revolves around local products that you are welcome to taste. You’ll come across fringe performances by local Utrecht talent throughout the city: from acoustic shows and street artistes, to story-tellers and poets. And don’t forget the traditional mulled wine and hot chocolate, which you drink outside in front of a crackling log fire. > 16 and 17 December, various locations in the city centre knusutrecht.nl

The five districts of the city centre THE CENTRE OF UTRECHT IS MADE UP OF FIVE SEPARATE DISTRICTS. EACH DISTRICT HAS PLENTY OF PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK. FIVE TIPS: 1
CITY HALL DISTRICT
DE KOEKFABRIEK KOFFIEBAR Slachtstraat 2 A tiny coffee bar where you can eat some of the best biscuits in Utrecht. Sounds good, right? The chocolate chip cookies, butter cake and cinnamon biscuits are made in the bakery on Schoutenstraat. In this socially-inclusive bakery, people with a disability or learning difficulties can roll up their sleeves and do some serious baking. The bakery is also a shop, so if you’ve enjoyed the biscuits in the coffee bar, you can buy some to take home. dekoekfabriek.com

DANEL
Vredenburgkade 11 Fancy a bite to eat before or after a concert in TivoliVredenburg? Then go to Danel around the corner from TivoliVredenburg, near Vredenburgkade and the Hollandse Toren. This restaurant, which serves small modern and classic French dishes, is open till late. You can either eat inside or, when you’re brave enough to go out in the cold, sit outside on the pavement terrace on the new singel. danel-utrecht.nl
Twijnstraat 9 Whether you’re after lunch, high tea or a newspaper at the reading table with the cheering sound of firewood crackling in the hearth, STAEL is the place to be. This historic building on Twijnstraat used to be a blacksmith’s shop, as is evident from the ceiling with its original wooden beams. stael.nl
EAT & DRINK
Wittevrouwenstraat 23 At café-studio Lucas, they don’t only serve great coffee, but they take their tea very seriously too. Owners Maartje and Norbert want to raise the profile of tea-making. They use filtered water and high-quality tea leaves, such as oolong, pu-ehr and white tea, which they serve in a real Japanese Kyusu (teapot). Whatever you drink, don’t forget to try a slice of home-made cake with it. lucasutrecht.nl

North-west Utrecht MORE AND MORE HOTSPOTS HAVE STARTED APPEARING IN THE AREA TO THE NORTH-WEST OF THE CITY CENTRE, WITH AMSTERDAMSESTRAATWEG AS THE DYNAMIC NERVE CENTRE.

BREAD & PASTRY
A&J BAKERY
Amsterdamsestraatweg 116 Although A&J Bakery obviously sells bread and pastries, you can also come here for a cup of coffee or a bowl of soup. But this isn’t what the place is about. According to the proprietor, baking is their core business. All their basic ingredients are locally sourced, and they want nothing to do with artificial additives. They also offer a range of vegan products. facebook.com/anjbakery

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS
THE COLOUR KITCHEN Prinses Christinalaan 1 The Colour Kitchen is an organisation with a mission: they help people who have trouble finding new work opportunities by offering them a placement, training course or a job in one of their own restaurants or the event and corporate catering sector. Weerdsingel WZ 8 There’s a small square on the corner of Amsterdamsestraatweg and Weerdsingel WZ. Thousands of people bike across it on their way to the station, passing O-Café as they go. A great place for a cup of tea or coffee with cake, a tasty sandwich or toasty, or a glass of beer or wine with nibbles. Too busy to relax? No problem, because they also have a quiet area where you can work on your laptop, while sipping a latte. o-utrecht.nl/cafe

SATRIALE’S
EAT & DRINK
Plantage 1B At Satriale’s, you can really taste the authentic wood-fired oven in the pizzas they bake. The menu doesn’t only feature traditional pizzas, but also a few ‘signature’ pizzas. How about a pizza with smoked salmon and horseradish or one with cured ham and truffle? You’ll find everything except Hawaii: simply not done, according to the owner. Just like in Italy. satriales.nl

ORGANIC
GYS
Amsterdamsestraatweg 113 Gys serves organic dishes, made from local produce wherever possible. The menu includes vegetarian and vegan options. What’s more, there’s always plenty see while you’re eating your breakfast, cake, lunch or dinner here, because a window table looks out onto the lively Amsterdamsestraatweg. gysutrecht.nl

PIZZA & PROSECCO
DE PIZZABAKKERS Nachtegaalstraat 70 Pizza and prosecco, why ever not? And no, it’s not one of those trendy hypes. As the pizza chefs will tell you, in Italy Prosecco is anything but pretentious. Talking of pizzas: they are baked in a wood-fired oven and prepared using fresh products. If you’re still hungry after your Napoletana or Trentina, go for one of their home-made desserts. Reliable sources tell us the tiramisu is to die for. depizzabakkers.nl
