MUSIC

Big Thief

Indie-rock band Big Thief released two albums within a short space of time: their debut album ‘Masterpiece’ was closely followed by ‘Capacity’. The American formation surrounding singer/guitarist Adrianne Lenker and guitarist Buck Meek combine honeyed vocals with gritty guitarwork to form a smooth, melancholic sound. Against the backdrop of the intimate EKKO venue, this promises to be a hypnotic live show.

Audio tour Domkerk

The impressively high arches and vaults of the Domkerk make it one of those mediaeval churches that resemble a French or German cathedral. The past has left its mark on both the architecture and the interior of the building. If you’d like to wander around the Domkerk listening to a special account of its history, take an audio tour (in English) produced by Dutch Museum Churches, featuring all the relevant highlights. Entry to the church is free and the audio tour costs € 3.

‘THE QUIET PATIO OF HOTEL MITLAND IS GREAT FOR SUNSET COCKTAILS’

THEATRE

I call my brothers

Raw, brooding production about fear, prejudice and terrorism. A bomb has exploded. Amor roams the streets, trying not be noticed. He looks just like the suspect. The phone he uses to call his ‘brothers’ is the only thing that makes him feel safe. The boundary between reality and fantasy, suspect and victim, actor and dancer, gradually starts to fade. Get inside Amor’s mind and experience 24 hours of his life. The show is suitable for anyone over 14. > 17 April, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl

Alishia Williams From Canada, associate professor at Utrecht University ‘On Sundays, Loft88 on Biltsestraatweg hosts live music on the patio. Kim, the manager, is a super host. If you have family staying, let them stay in Hotel Mitland and enjoy the quiet patio for sunset cocktails in the summer. They also offer free bikes to cycle to the centre.’ loft88.nl mitland.nl

MOVIES

Phantom Thread

The renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister are the spiders in the web of the glamourous British fashion scene of 1950s post-war London. They dress the aristocracy, film stars, socialites and women aspiring to high society in the smart style of ‘The House of Woodcock’. Women come and go in Woodcock’s life, providing this confirmed bachelor with both inspiration and companionship. But then he meets the young, self-serving Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon worms her way into his life as his muse and lover. As his life is turned upside down, Woodcock starts to feel trapped by this claustrophobic relationship. > Phantom Thread is showing at the Louis Hartlooper Complex from 1 March hartlooper.nl

OPERA

Antigona

The compelling opera ‘Antigona’ by the Italian composer Tommaso Traetta, based on the Greek tragedy of the same name, still rings true today. A king tries to gain control of his city, which is being torn apart by civil conflict. In doing so, he falls out with his brother’s daughter and a bitter family drama ensues. Traetta’s musical score reminds you of Mozart and Gluck, with some phenomenal choir scenes, dramatic arias and a colourful arrangement. © Allard Willemse

Some of my favourite things I’ve done whilst visiting include: drinking tea in De Bakkerswinkel on Wittevrouwenstraat, cycling through Wilheminapark and out to the pancake house in the forest (Theehuis Rhijnauwen), eating fries from the Frietwinkel in Vinkenburgstraat and having a beer in Café Olivier in Achter Clarenburg.’ debakkerswinkel.nl/utrecht theehuisrhijnauwen.nl café-olivier.be

You don’t have be an early riser to get a scrumptious breakfast: Teds 1 (Lichte Gaard 8) serves breakfast from 9 till 5. A quick warning for people who can’t choose: the menu is vast! There are about forty dishes varying from banana pancakes and eggs Benedict to croque madame and Philly steak sandwiches. They also serve cocktails for a ‘boozy’ brunch. If you’re an early bird, try District 2 (Jan van Scorelstraat 1, opens at 7.30, and 8.30 on Sundays), Rocking Chair 3 (Willem van Noortstraat 88, opens at 8.00 on weekdays and 9.00 at the weekend) or Rabarber 4 (Zadelstraat 20, opens at 9.00 from Tuesday to Sunday). To find out more about the history of this city, go to the Volksbuurtmuseum 5 (Waterstraat 27-29), a museum focusing on people from ordinary working-class areas. The former Utrecht ‘Wijk C’ district, which is where the museum is located, is a prime example. Here, you will get a real feel of how ordinary Dutch people used to live. Or go to the Utrecht Archives 6 (Hamburgerstraat 28) with its kilometres of shelves storing half a million photos, films, drawings and prints, which together form the collective municipal (and regional) memory. And for those who want experience the ‘good old days’ themselves: you can even take a virtual carriage ride through 18th century Utrecht.

You can get freshly-made rolls and sandwiches at De Broodjeswinkel 7 (Oudegracht 277) on the corner of Lange Smeebrug and Oudegracht. Either eat it on the bench at the front, or stay inside and eat it at the bar. Or try Eethuis VERS 8 (Oudegracht 210-212), where you can order warm Arabic bread with goats’ cheese, fig chutney, nuts and thymehoney, or with home-made hummus, pumpkin seeds and raisins. You can have anything on the menu as a take-away. After lunch, walk along Oudegracht towards Ledig Erf. On the way, you’ll find numerous interesting antique and vintage stores. Shop for a vintage outfit at Sisters 9 (Oudegracht 224), rummage for curiosities at the A.R.M. second-hand shop 10 (Oudegracht 266) or check out the vintage design at VAEN 11 (Oudegracht 246).

Evening

From Ledig Erf, continue south along Oosterkade and under Vaartsche Rijn station until you reach Rotsoord, a creative and cultural hotspot located in the middle of an industrial heritage site. Before you settle down for dinner, get a quick shot of art in the former Pastoe furniture factory, which regularly exhibits work created by students at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. After you’ve had your fill of art, go to the WT Urban Kitchen 1 restaurant on the top floor of the water tower (Heuveloord 25A) for a romantic dinner with a great view. Or be amazed by the flavours of Asia in LE:EN 2 (Heuveloord 140). Other great places to dine include De Zagerij 3 (Rotsoord 7A) and Het Ketelhuis 4 (Rotsoord 7B), where the metres-high windows afford a fabulous view of the Vaartsche Rijn. We’d recommend booking a table in advance at all these restaurants, particularly at weekends.

Rotsoord is a good place to spend the rest of the evening. Check the agenda of pop podium De Helling 5 (Helling 7) to see what’s happening on the music scene. The cultural bar Klein Berlijn 6 (Helling 22) is right opposite. It’s a great place for a drink, a pub quiz, live acts or a DJ set. Camping Ganspoort 7 (Helling 87) also organises regular events such as a monthly pub quiz. If you’d rather just have a quiet pint, try the brandnew Taplokaal Gist 8 (Helling 9), where you can choose from a range of thirty speciality draught beers.

THE LOCAL’S FAVOURITES

Q&A WITH TIMO COX AND ELLA BUZIAU By Dieuwke de Boer

Blackfish is a fashion and concept store with a gutsy, edgy character. Faux fur, glitter, prints, leather: nothing is too extreme for the owners, Timo and Ella. He comes from the music industry, she is from art & design. And this is patently obvious in their shop. You’ll not only find totally unique clothes here, but you can get your fix of art while you’re at it by taking in their small collection of work by young artists. Timo and Ella are also considering providing a podium for up-and-coming musicians in the future.

Máxima park

Ra r e J o n g e n s

’t Oude Pothuys

Holiday feeling Ella: ‘We often go ‘longboarding’ in Máxima park in Leidsche Rijn. You can get there in a couple of minutes by train from Utrecht Centraal station. The park is huge and quiet, because cars, mopeds and scooters are banned. The Rare Jongens restaurant on Het Zand, opposite Castellum Hoge Woerd, is a nice place to drink a speciality beer outside on the terrace. If it’s warm, we like to chill near the Haarrijnseplas lake. It’s a good way to get out of town and feels like a mini-holiday.’

Live music Timo: ‘We had our first date in ’t Oude Pothuys on Oudegracht. It’s one of the few places where they have live music every night, and the food’s good too. The waterside terrace is a great place to enjoy a pint of Straffe Hendrik (a Belgian draught beer) and the cheese fondue is to die for. For a night out, we go to De Helling. The programming and atmosphere haven’t changed in ten years, but that’s what makes it what it is.’ Ella: ‘And the good thing is: you can carry on drinking in the bar after a concert if you want.’

Vintage clothing Ella: ‘Paperbird, a women’s clothes shop on Oudkerkhof, sells some great stuff. There’s something for everyone. And I’m a regular at Episode on Oudegracht - you won’t find their vintage items anywhere else. I never leave the shop empty-handed, even if I don’t need anything.’

Hidden bar Timo: ‘You’ll find all kinds of little gems tucked away between the industrial premises on Europalaan. De Stadstuin, for example, is a gathering place for artists, musicians, goldsmiths and other creative spirits, but anyone can just walk in. And Bar Stadstuin is a great place for a drink and a bite to eat.’

ANS ZONDAG AND RENÉ SMOORENBURG Duo-exhibition featuring work by sculptor Ans Zondag and still-life painter René Smoorenburg. Zondag lives on a farm, among the sheep, horses, donkeys, birds, dogs and cats in her care. She translates her love of animals into wax or clay, which she eventually turns into bronze sculptures. Smoorenburg does the same with fruit, flowers and everyday items such as jackets, tin dishes and christening dresses. Nothing that he paints is perfect, which only adds to the beauty. > 11 to 31 March, Kunstliefde kunstliefde.nl

CULTURE

Museum Catharijneconvent is hosting a unique exhibition of manuscripts illustrated with beautiful mediaeval miniatures. The manuscripts reveal a world full of flowers, animals and rolling pastures. Apart from the biblical scenes and saints, the books also feature pictures of everyday and less everyday activities, such as farmers working the land and dukes out hunting. Colour plays an important role in this exhibition. Over the years, a lot of mediaeval objects such as murals and paintings lose their original sparkle. These miniatures are as clear and bright as on the day they were painted, because the books in which they feature have never seen the light of day.

22 MAG Utrecht — Mar/Apr 2018 Lady Bird California, 2002. Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is an unruly student on the point of graduating from her conservative high school. She hopes to escape her home town by going to New York to study. Lady Bird’s mother (Laurie Metcalf) is a nurse who works hard to support the family after her husband loses his job. Although Lady Bird has a strained relationship with her wilful mother, they are actually more alike than she realises. Lady Bird is the directing debut of actress Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the screenplay. The film won two Golden Globes: one for best film and one for best actress (Saoirse Ronan).

Katie Says Goodbye ‘Stay sweet’, says truck driver Bear every time he leaves Katie after she’s shared his bed. For money: the young waitress has a sideline as a prostitute. Numerous stand-up comedians performing throughout two evenings: the Utrecht International Comedy Festival (UICF) will have you in stitches. In fact: the UICF is the biggest stand-up comedy festival in Europe. And there’s plenty for international visitors to laugh about, because many of the acts are in English. Take the extravagant drag queens who go to make up the British quintet ‘Denim’. Their show is bursting with music, humour, dance and of course glitter and crazy costume changes. Or Daisy Earl’s no-nonsense comedy. This Scot bases her acts on everyday life, and fills theatres with her self-deprecating, original observations and sharp wit. Paul Currie, known as a ‘oneman Monty Python on acid’, is also on the programme. This Irish comedian puts on bombastic, absurd shows which amaze audiences, while managing to draw them into the insanity he creates on stage. > 6 and 7 April, TivoliVredenburg utrechtinternationalcomedyfestival.nl

The programme includes lots of music, but don’t be surprised if someone suddenly starts reciting poetry or does a stand-up comedy act. INTIMATE THEATRE

CAFÉ THEATER FESTIVAL

‘LIVING ROOMS & CAFÉS WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO MINIATURE THEATRES’

During this 15th edition of the free Café Theater Festival, 28 Utrecht bars spend four whole days in the guise of mini-theatres. Come and watch the surprisingly intimate productions produced by young theatre makers, while sipping a glass of wine of beer. To help you choose, we’ve found acts in four bars that are suitable for international audiences. The dance production ‘Morning, Mourning’ in Eetcafé Refter (Nachtegaalstraat 29B) revolves around feelings like grief, absence and loneliness. Families with children of 4 and over could go to Camping Ganspoort (Helling 87) to enjoy a performance of the show ‘It Didn’t Start With Us’. The musical theatre company De Italianen brings a touch of Italian fire and fury (only joking!) to Hofman Café (Janskerkhof 17A), and Café ’t Hoogt (Hoogt 4) will host a dance production entitled ‘TIBA’, which focuses on how hard it is to venture outside your comfort zone. > 1 to 4 March, various bars cafetheaterfestival.nl

HAMLET

Big news for lovers of opera and Shakespeare! The opera and musical theatre company OPERA2DAY and the New European Ensemble are presenting a ‘grand opéra’ by the French composer Ambroise Thomas: Hamlet, adapted from Shakespeare’s masterpiece of the same name. In this new, compact version, opera and film merge into one, penetrating deep into the mind of the main character. The performance is in French, with surtitles in English and Dutch.

IN SEARCH OF HAPPINESS

BENDING THE WALLS

The latest production by the Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan is about the human desire for happiness. A desire that is deeply anchored in our dreams and cravings, and which is sometimes in itself a strategy designed to protect us or to survive. In Bending the Walls, dance is a metaphor for the psychological, physical and emotional forces that we deploy to withstand the pressures of life and pursue our perpetual search for happiness. © Michael Slobodian

St Matthew Passion You have two opportunities to listen to Bach’s St Matthew Passion this March. A special performance of the classical masterpiece will be given by the Netherlands Bach Society on 20 March. It will take place in a concert hall with a proper baroque organ and a spectacular staging of two choirs and orchestras opposite each other, with members of the audience on stage. The next day, all the children’s choirs that have performed their own St Matthew Passion this year are invited. > 20 and 21 March, TivoliVredenburg tivolivredenburg.nl

KING’S NIGHT 26 April

VARIOUS LOCATIONS On 27 April, we celebrates the birthday of our King WillemAlexander. The party begins on 26 April: dance the night away to the sounds of the DJs in one of the city’s many squares.

CULTURE

The music played by this band from the west of the Netherlands is best described as a mix of pop, rhythm-and-blues and funk. The EP ‘Walking on Fire’ and the single of the same name have certainly raised the band’s profile recently: the title track even featured in three American series. The debut album will be released in 2018, and that’s worth celebrating!

AMERSFOORT

The Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort is the birthplace of the renowned artist Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944). At this museum, you see how his work gradually evolved from realistic landscapes into abstract compositions featuring his infamous geometric grid-based paintings. In an interactive video installation, Mondriaan takes you on a tour of Amersfoort, via Paris and London, and finally to New York. The life-size replica of his Parisian studio shows you how Mondriaan created his own special living and working space. Mar/Apr 2018 — MAG Utrecht

HOW DO YOU FANCY A NIGHT IN AN ANCIENT MANOR HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF A FOREST, CLOSE TO THE KROMME RIJN RIVER YET IN BIKING DISTANCE FROM THE CENTRE OF UTRECHT? THAT’S THE DEAL AT STAYOKAY UTRECHTBUNNIK, THE OLDEST YOUTH HOSTEL IN THE NETHERLANDS.

Next time? A NIGHT IN THE STICKS

STAYOKAY UTRECHTBUNNIK You could call the area between Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen Utrecht’s backyard. It’s a great place to walk, cycle or canoe, particularly in spring. Hostel Stayokay occupies three buildings right in the middle of this area: the manor house with private rooms for one to six guests, a gatehouse and the group accommodation. The former coach house adjoining the gatehouse is now a café (with a large, sunny terrace), which serves coffee and cake, lunch and speciality beers seven days a week. And every last Thursday evening of the month, there’s live music under the motto ‘Don’t wake the deer’. > Stayokay UtrechtBunnik Rhijnauwenselaan 14B, Bunnik stayokay.com/en
