Wild bees are a crucial link in our food chain: over seventy percent of all crops need to be pollinated and bees are responsible for ninety percent of this task. But they are having a tough time at the moment. Half of the 358 species of bees are under threat of extinction because they are running out of living space and food. So eleven Dutch natural history museums, including Utrecht University Museum, are hosting exhibitions to highlight the importance of these very special insects. A must-see!

‘Punk is not dead’ and Bad Religion has been the living proof for the past 38 years. With five million albums sold, this American band is one of the most popular punk rock acts ever. Greg Gaffin is still the frontman in 2018, and he is accompanied by two other original band members (guitarist Brett Gurewitz and bassist Jay Bentley). The band will play their third studio album ‘Suffer’ (released thirty years ago to the day) in its entirety, followed by lots of their favourite hits.

Nikos Tsopoglou From Greece, studying guitar at the HKU Utrechts Conservatorium ‘I love hanging out and listening to live music in music café ‘t Oude Pothuys on Oudegracht. I work there once a week and also host a jam session every last Thursday of the month. Another great place for live music is Café Tilt on Lange Jufferstraat, where they organise free jazz sessions most Sundays. I also like the fact that the city has many parks. Juliana park in the north of the city is one of my favourites, and I also like going to Molen park along the canal in Lombok district.’

What could be better than stepping into a cool, calm church on a hot summer afternoon? Utrecht understands, so throughout the summer months, twelve churches will open their doors to the public. Watch films in historic surroundings

What’s happening?

In August and September, movie theatre ‘t Hoogt will be organising open-air film screenings on historic locations around Utrecht, in collaboration with Provincie Utrecht. Soestdijk Palace, the former air base in Soesterberg and the forts of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie are some of the extraordinary locations. Aine Mulqueen From Ireland, studied in Utrecht for a year ‘I love spending time in one of the parks, such as Wilhelmina park or Grift park. For brunch, Ted’s on Lichte Gaard is one of my favourite places in town. I also like going to SLA on Voorstraat. And we recently went to The Streetfood Club on Janskerkhof. It has a really cool interior. TivoliVredenburg and EKKO are great places to go out, because they regularly host student nights.’

Park 6

You could best describe Park 6 as a mix between an indoor park, a cultural centre and a stage. So if the weather outside isn’t all it should be, go to the fifth and sixth floors of TivoliVredenburg on a Friday or Saturday evening to enjoy live music, arcade games, midnight comedy, debates or table tennis tournaments. You can also bust a few moves on the luminescent dance floor. And the great view of the city is a nice bonus. Admission is free. © Michiel Ton

THEATRE

This year, the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert, the oldest symphony orchestra in the Netherlands, will be 195 years old. To celebrate this, it is performing the most magnificent Dutch opera ever written in a very special location: in the open air at the former airbase in Soesterberg. The opera is about local hero Thijl Uilenspiegel, who became a symbol of unyielding national spirit during the Dutch War of Independence. The performance is suitable for non-Dutch speakers. To tempt you further: your opera ticket is also valid for a visit to the Dutch Military Museum located on the former airbase. > until 17 July, former Soesterberg airbase (Verlengde Paltzerweg 1, Soest) thijl2018.nl

It’s never too soon for coffee. Follow Waterlinieweg and bike along Rembrandtkade until you reach the crossroads. In front of you, you’ll see District. This trendy, simple local café on Jan van Scorelstraat serves fresh juice, toast and pastries. We’d recommend the toast: they bake the bread themselves, just up the road. Jan van Scorelstraat is also home to Olijfje, the ideal spot for olives and freshly-made tapas. Or do you fancy a beer? If so, bike on to Jan Primus, a traditional pub, where you can stand at the bar or sit outside. The Van Oost pasta bar is a great place for a bite to eat. Leave Jan van Scorelstraat to bike along the water, turn right onto Adriaen van Ostadelaan and left in front of the bridge onto Abstederdijk. Follow this road through Sterrenwijk until you reach Venuslaan. Cross the bridge over the Kromme Rijn and onto Albatrosstraat. After passing under the railway tunnel, take Vondellaan to the right which takes you into Dichterswijk.

Villa Jongerius

The building dominating Heycopplein would be hard to miss. It’s perfectly symmetrical, a typical example of the Amsterdam School style. Another typical feature of this art movement is the use of curves, which also can be seen in the building. Look at the gables of the towers. This former auction building (Veilinggebouw) now houses the Utrecht wrestling club De Halter. The final destination of the bike tour used to have close ties with the auction building. The goods being traded needed to be taken to and from the auction, hence the Veilinghaven (harbour) on the Merwede canal, less than a minute’s bike ride from the auction building. Follow Voorsterbeeklaan and the harbour vessels with their typical cubic wheelhouses will appear by magic. Find yourself a table on the terrace of restaurant Pesto, take a sip of your Verdicchio wine or Aperol Spritz and sit back to admire the national monument opposite: Villa Jongerius. Every Friday and Saturday, Guus takes a group of four to twelve people on a special tasting tour of the Utrecht food scene. The restaurants he visits vary per tour as Guus always checks with the group members before deciding. Our old neighbourhood ‘We used to live close to De Munt, in the Lombok district. Café Kanaalzicht on Keulsekade is a place I still go back to, partly because of the massive sunny outdoor area. TEN YOUNG EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLES COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER IN A MUSICAL SHOWDOWN

pe

Sc

hu

t

Fo

The Utrecht Early Music Festival, the largest of its kind in the world, focuses on music from the mediaeval, renaissance and baroque periods. This year, the festival revolves around Burgundy. The era of Philip the Bold, John the Fearless, Philip the Good and Charles the Bold survives in the expression ‘the Burgundian lifestyle’, which conjures up images of wealth and power, abundance and luxury, refined court ladies and ambitious knights. This is reflected in the programme of the festival. There’s also a curator in residence this year: Björn Schmelzer and his early music ensemble Graindelavoix will have the Janskerk at their disposal for five days as a space for working and experimenting. The Utrecht Early Music Festival will also be hosting the International Van Wassenaer Competition, in which ten

BLACK BOX

UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

3

EYE-CATCHER

The University Library is one of several iconic buildings in the area. It was designed by Dutch architect Wiel Arets. On the outside, it’s a rectangular black box with windows featuring a silkscreened cane pattern. On the inside, it has two distinct sections separated by a large atrium in the middle. The black from the exterior also features inside: the walls and ceilings are black, as is much of the interior. > University Library, Heidelberglaan 3

COMBINED HEAT & POWER PLANT This chestnut-coloured building, with its six rusty towers, stands out on the skyline. It is a combined heat & power plant, built in 2005 to replace the old (smaller) plant that was no longer able to meet demand when construction took off in the 1990s. The shape of this steel building is functional: it traces the contours of the machines within. > Combined heat & power plant, Utrecht Science Park

FOLDED FLOOR

EDUCATORIUM Rem Koolhaas, one of the Netherlands’ most famous architects, and his Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) came up with the design for the Educatorium. In a nutshell, the building was made by bending and folding a slab of flooring. It houses two large lecture halls, three exam rooms and a canteen. In 1999, Koolhaas was awarded the Rietveld prize, the biennial Utrecht prize for architecture, for this building. > Educatorium, Leuvenlaan 19

e start in the Hoograven district, in the south-west of the city. You get here by biking from the centre via Oudegracht, Ledig Erf and Jutfaseweg along the Vaartsche Rijn. En route, you’ll pass Rotsoord with its striking water tower and the former Pastoe factory, where they used to craft furniture and which is now a workplace for students from the local academy of art. You could be tempted by all the bars and restaurants you pass, but our suggestion is to just keep going. At the end of Jutfaseweg, cross the road and turn left over

Zuiderbrug (bridge) and then right onto Verlengde Hoogravenseweg. Bike past the field with a playground and you’ll see newly built houses on your right. Our first stop is behind these houses: the New York-style bistro and bar Op Zuid 1 in the former Neerlandia wire and steel factory. You can take a welcome break from biking on the enormous waterside terrace on the Vaartsche Rijn. It’s easy to spend the rest of the day here. But we’re biking back to Verlengde Hoogravenseweg, turn left onto ’t Goylaan and cross two bridges. Take a right after the second

harbour with berths for several historical houseboats. You’ll also find a number of restaurants, including Pesto 3 . The menu is brimming with dishes for sharing such as bruschetta, Italian cheese and cold-cuts, focaccia and traditional pastas. In fact, it’s just like being in Italy. Retrace your steps and bike on northwards, with the water on your right. You’ll bike past the casino and on towards the Oog in Al district. Just past the Munt building (which you see on the opposite bank) and Oog in Al park, you’ll reach the former Cereol factory, where they used to extract oil from linseed to produce soya. It is now home to Buurten in de Fabriek 4 , a favourite among locals for many years, largely because of the huge sunny terrace with its view of the Merwede canal on one side and industrial heritage on the other. Don’t worry if it’s raining; it’s great inside too. And now we head for the ultimate lounge spot for spending sultry

summer evenings. At the top of the Oog in Al district, smack bang between the Amsterdam-Rijn canal and the Merwede canal, there’s a real urban beach. On weekdays, Strand Oog in Al 5 is lovely and quiet, making it the ideal place to lap up some sun engrossed in a good book. Position your deckchair on the water’s edge, sit back and watch the ships sailing past on the inland waterway with a nice cool drink in your hand. There’s even an enclosed playground for the little ones. And don’t forget to order some food: the menu features sandwiches, salads, burgers and delicious assorted snacks. Jul/Aug 2018 — MAG Utrecht

Next time? A FEW MONTHS AGO, UTRECHT GAINED A LOVELY NEW HOTEL WHEN AN OLD BUILDING IN POTTERSTRAAT WAS CONVERTED INTO EXPLORIS HOTEL UTRECHT. THIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL IS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN, WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY NEED FOR A GREAT CITY TRIP.

TRENDY AND MODERN

EXPLORIS HOTEL UTRECHT

All the rooms in this hotel are trendy and modern with an industrial vibe, and yet each has its own individual ‘feel’. One room has a separate sleeping area on a mezzanine, another has a lounge area with a view of Neude. And if

you’re after a large room for a family or a group of friends, the hotel also offers family suites, some of which even have two separate sleeping areas. In addition, they all feature a kitchenette, fridge and TV portal to help you find your way around the hotel and the city. How handy is that?!
