De Angstfabriek Mustsee!
Try to imagine a place where all our worst fears are generated. What would it look like? How are alarming newspaper headlines, disaster scenarios and suggestive news items produced? In a thought experiment aptly named De Angstfabriek (The Fear Factory), you see how we are hijacked by social anxiety on a daily basis and who suffers the most, but also how we can defend ourselves from the constant dose of fear we are administered. Church Night in Utrecht
Musty is often the first thing that springs to mind when you mention churches. But according to the organisers of Church Night in Utrecht, this couldn’t be further from the truth and from 21 to 22 June, they will show visitors the lighter side of the church. It all starts on Friday evening with an opening concert on Domplein with music ranging from light classical to pop. On Saturday there’s a multicultural Choir Festival in the Domkerk, and the doors of the numerous churches in the city will be open to visitors all weekend.

house designed by the Utrecht architect Gerrit Rietveld in 1924 for the widow Truus Schröder. It was built in the true style and tradition of the artistic movement De Stijl. The flowing transitions between indoors and outdoors so typical of this style are achieved by interrupting the solid facades. The use of red, blue and yellow, combined with white, grey and black is another typical feature of De Stijl. The house is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, but only if you book in advance. Q&A WITH MERIJN KOOPS By Dieuwke de Boer
‘CLUB WAS. IS LOCATED IN WHAT USED TO BE A FORMER MACHINE FACTORY’ Club WAS.
Merijn Koops (25), born and bred in Utrecht, is the founder of international hospitality recruitment agency The Work Embassy. He spent the last seven years living and working in various countries, including Belgium, England, Bonaire and Colombia. He’s now back in his beloved city. ‘Food is a big thing in my life. After graduating, I trained as a chef in Belgium. I’m also involved in the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN), which promotes a sustainable, honest food system. On 19 May, for example, we’re organising an anti-food waste festival in Vechtclub XL, with music, a disco soup and various workshops and lectures. We need to make people more aware of all the great products that are available in and around Utrecht.’ theworkembassy.com slowfoodyouthnetwork.nl

Slow food ‘The people running bar à manger KookaBarra (Burgemeester Reigerstraat 29) do everything according to the slow food principle. They can tell you about the origins of every single ingredient on your plate.’
Curiosity shop ‘I recently discovered Antiquariaat Acanthus (Achter St.-Pieter 180), a sort of seventeenth-century curiosity shop that’s only open on Fridays. Going inside is walking into Diagon Alley - the wizarding alley from the Harry Potter books. I found an Indonesian cookery book from 1844 there. Fantastic! Another fun shop is Slavjanski Dvor (Amsterdamsestraatweg 316). There’s a tiny off-licence in the back of this Eastern-European supermarket, where they stock at least fifty different types of vodka. The owners are very passionate about vodka and can tell you anything you want to know.’

oasis in the middle of the city. I’d recommend having a drink in the museum café Gingko, where you have a lovely view of the garden and greenhouses. It’s like being in another world. Buurten in de Fabriek (Kanaalweg 91) is a great spot just outside the city centre for a drink and a bite to eat. They have a fabulous terrace overlooking the water, which almost makes you feel like being completely out of town.’
A night of techno ‘I’m always in for a good techno party, so I’m a big fan of Club WAS. (Tractieweg 41). It’s located in what used to be the staff showers and changing rooms of a former machine factory in the Werkspoorgebied, an industrial area in the west of the city. This is the city’s first real club as far as I’m concerned.’

Utrecht is a city with an open mind. For 23 years, the Midzomergracht Festival has been celebrating love in all its forms. The week of 21 to 28 June will focus on more acceptance for sexual and gender diversity. This edition kicks off on the evening of Friday 21 June on Domplein, with an extensive musical programme. Sunday 23 June is all about the Annie Brouwer Korf (a former mayor of Utrecht who was particularly committed to the rights of lesbians, gays, bi- and transsexuals) Award, a prize that is awarded annually to the people who are making a strong commitment to the acceptance and visibility of the pink community in Utrecht. The rest of the programme is highly diverse, comprising debates, theatre shows, lectures, parties, the spoken word, queer performances and an extensive film programme in which over sixteen films will be screened in the city centre and various suburbs of Utrecht.

The exhibition provides an exclusive peek behind the scenes of the glorious travels of Baron Etiènne van Zuylen and Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, in an era when travel was reserved for the happy few. The couple hadn’t heard of travelling light, hence the immense volumes of luggage and staff they invariably took with them. > until September, De Haar Castle kasteeldehaar.nl/english

The American artist Jessica Stockholder (1959) has been making a name for herself since the 1990s with installations which combine ordinary everyday objects (from umbrellas and cushions to stools, lamps and washing baskets) to create an overwhelming, colourful entity. Stockholder uses her assemblage art to challenge our standard view of the objects and materials around us and overturn our ideas about what is valuable and what is not. > until 1 September, Centraal Museum centraalmuseum.nl

FORGETFUL
ZOOMING IN ON LOSS An intimate performance about the links between the senses, movement and memory. Choreographer Ann Van den Broek zooms in on the details of memory loss, such as the changes in emotions and facial expression. The relationship between memories and sensory perception is another theme. How do people perceive the world when they lose their memory? And how does this affect those around them?

Theatre ODE TO FANTASY
FANTASIO
This co-production of Opera Zuid, Club Guy & Roni and FASHIONCLASH shows a different side to the French composer and cellist Jacques Offenbach. Disguised as a romantic fairy-tale, it is actually a satire about jesters and madmen, love and folly, war and dressing-up. The young student Henri (alias Fantasio) is desperate to turn his life around. When the court jester dies, Fantasio decides to take his place in the hope that Princess Elsbeth will fall for his charms. > 4 June, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht stadsschouwburg-utrecht.nl/ english

If you saw the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, you’ll know exactly what the Canadian collective 7 Fingers is capable of. In this show, the eight performers delve into their family history, when everything was so much simpler. No flattering portraits of your life on Facebook, Instagram or some random dating site. Everything was just as it was. The Canadians perform an ode to the generation that shaped the world we currently live in. A cycle route for connoisseurs: this route around Bunnik, Zeist and Driebergen takes you past the organic vineyards of Hoog Beek & Royen (where you can try a glass of their awardwinning Souvignier Gris), de Bijzondere Taarten Fabriek (for delicious cakes) and Landgoed Kraaybeekerhof (an estate featuring a restaurant where you can sample dishes with homegrown organic-dynamic ingredients). You then bike through the forest around Driebergen and past Kasteel Sterkenburg, one of many historical country mansions.
If you’re taking children on your cycle tour, then this one around Zeist is perfect. Stop for a break at Blik & Burgers after a couple of kilometres, so the kids can let off steam in a fantastic public playground. Carry on to De Boswerf, a beautiful green location in the middle of the Zeisterbos forest. The visitors’ centre has a nice café with a terrace, an insect garden, bee garden and bee shed. On Sunday afternoons, children can help to feed a herd of Drenthe moorland sheep at the Heidestein sheepfold.
A combination of natural and military history, which really appeals to children. You bike past the extensive sandy plains of the Soester sand dunes, where you can stop to stretch your legs. Discover everything about Dutch military history in the National Military Museum and watch your kids running amok in a mini-tank or tracked vehicle. On the former military airbase in Soesterberg Park you can explore air-raid shelters, ammunition depots and bunkers. And there’s a secret hermit’s cave and maze on the De Paltz country estate... Not many people know that!

On this route, you can also go for a walk along the winding paths of the Heidetuin (heather garden) in Driebergen. You’ll see countless varieties of heather and something is always in flower. Bike to the historical Bartiméus vegetable garden, with a rosarium, greenhouses and a teahouse. Continue your route to Doorn, Leersum and Amerongen, where you can visit the Huis Doorn Museum, the Zuylestein estate, Broekhuizen Park and Amerongen Castle.
This route takes you to the Austerlitz forest, where the French army erected a camp in 1804. After the French left, spar, oak, pine and beech trees were planted, which have now grown to form an area of natural beauty. The theatre café at the Beauforthuis (a former church) is a good place for a pitstop. Continue your bike ride to Henschotermeer lake, a recreation area in the middle of the forest where you can relax on the sandy beach or have a refreshing dip in the chilly water.

MAXIMUS BREWERY Pratumplaats 2A This brewery with its own tasting room is on the edge of Máxima park in Leidsche Rijn. Owner Ewald Visser: ‘Our beers are subtle, have less fizz and a lower alcohol percentage, so you can just keep drinking all evening. Pandora is our bestseller; this pale beer is where it all started. Little Fred, a session pale beer with a hint of sour and bitter, is a good choice for a drink on the terrace. One of my personal favourites is Sour Crystal Meth: a fresh, slightly sour beer, made with kefir. DE KROMME HARING Europalaan 2C At brewpub De Kromme Haring you can get beers with intriguing names such as Whitebait (golden ale), Mudskipper (cloudy, New England-style IPA), Twisted Kipper (fruity, bitter IPA) and Inktvis (inky black IPA). But not all the draughts beers in this brewpub in Vechtclub XL are home-brews; some come from other small breweries based in the Netherlands and beyond. dekrommeharing.nl
CAB-Rondom 90A Mark Strooker and Bart-Jan Hoeijmakers are the founders of Oproer. The name stands for the peaceful revolution the proprietors are promoting, designed to show us that things can be done differently, with attention for people, the environment, animals and beer. Oproer has five standard draught beers. Mark Strooker: ‘The other beers are experiments. We like brewing hoppy IPAs and sour ales with wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria. That last one might sound weird, but the final taste is fruity and really quite special.’ oproerbrouwerij.nl

QUENCH THAT THIRST
OUDAEN URBAN BREWERY Oudegracht 99 The history of the brewery in the vaults of Oudaen castle goes back to the Middle Ages, an age when clean drinking water was a scarce commodity. Drinking beer was a cheap and safe way of quenching your thirst, because the brewing process killed most of the bacteria. In the nineteenth century, most of the breweries disappeared, including the one in Oudaen. It returned to the vaults in 1990 and has since been turning out lager, white beer, dubbel, tripel and limited edition seasonal beers. There’s a guided tour for anyone who wants to learn more about the brewing process. oudaen.nl/brouwerij

station concourse
May/Jun 2019 — MAG Utrecht
Do you recognise this? This is what the concourse at Utrecht Centraal Station looked like in 1975. In this photo, it is just two years old; an ultramodern concourse in those days. The staff at the brand-new ticket desks printed the train tickets on an old-fashioned machine, because computers hadn’t been introduced back then. In the background, you can see automatic ticket machines, which were a new innovation. The typical 1970s fashion, with flared trousers, oversized collars and hats in every shape and size complete this historic image. > In collaboration with The Utrecht Archives.
