DANCE

Holland Dance Festival & Codarts

Twenty-five young, international dancers from Codarts Rotterdam (the place for contemporary dance) take you on an exciting journey of dance. ‘Talent on the Move’ is a provocative, scintillating show that has absolutely everything: new work specially created for the dancers, alongside older world-famous repertoire by top choreographers including Jiří Kylián and Itzik Galili. 12 January > Podium Hoge Woerd podiumhogewoerd.nl

MUSIC

Lizz Wright

© Jesse Kitt

As the daughter of an American minister, Lizz Wright learned to sing and play piano in church. The warm, dulcet tones of her voice suit every genre of music, from gospel and jazz to R&B and soul. She also covers songs by pop legends including the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton. 21 February > TivoliVredenburg tivolivredenburg.nl

‘PANDHOF GARDEN IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO WANDER AROUND.’

Silvia Rodriguez From Madrid, exchange student Law and Political Science ‘My friend is visiting Utrecht for a few days, so I’m giving her a tour of the city. We just went to Pandhof Garden, which is a beautiful place to wander around. It also gives a nice perspective on the Dom Tower. I also like going to ACU on Voorstraat for a concert, a good meal or just for a coffee or a beer. The place is run by volunteers, which gives it a nice touch.’ acu.nl

This year’s edition focuses on young talent and new creative hotspots, as well as the 100th anniversary of the Dutch De Stijl artistic movement. You can build your own furniture on Stadhuisplein and there’s an ‘Utrecht Made’ exhibition in the Stayokay hostel on the Neude, showing work by local makers inspired by De Stijl. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband’s historic legacy. THEATRE

Choreograph Dario Tortorelli is fascinated by metamorphosis, seeking inspiration in pop culture and glam rock artistes who experiment with identity and gender. In this performance, the personality of the performer Adi searches for his body’s identity to the compelling sounds of David Bowie. Starting in an almost mechanical installation, the body gradually transforms into a recognisably human form.

WE’VE ALL HEARD OF MIFFY, THE WORLDFAMOUS BUNNY CREATED IN 1955 BY THE UTRECHT-BASED ILLUSTRATOR DICK BRUNA. YOU’LL SEE EVIDENCE OF MIFFY ALL OVER THE CITY, SO DRESS UP WARMLY, PUT ON YOUR WALKING SHOES AND SET OFF IN SEARCH OF BUNNIES. IT’S EVEN FUN WITHOUT THE CHILDREN.

S

tart your bunny tour on Neude. Take a quick peek in the Fifth, the first-floor lounge in hostel Stayokay. Visitors are always welcome, even if they’re not guests. Don’t forget to look at the ceiling, as you’ll spot some upside down bunnies. Leave Neude and walk along Potterstraat, turning right into Oudegracht. At the end, just before Van Asch van Wijckskade, you’ll find a peaceful Miffy square. The bronze statue of Miffy in the middle was made by Dick Bruna’s son Marc.

Walk back on the other side of Oudegracht and turn right into Lange Viestraat. At the main crossroads, stay on the left and cross to Vredenburg. The pedestrian lights use Miffy figures to tell pedestrians when they can cross. From Vredenburg, walk along Lange Elisabethstraat, Steenstraat and Mariastraat to Mariaplaats. Dick Bruna used to bike this way every day, on his way to his studio. A statue of Dick Pluis stands in the square as a mark of honour from the local shopkeepers. Continue onto Zadelstraat and past Theo Blom’s pastry ers m Ha shop, a personal favourite of Dick Bruna. They sell ne special Miffy biscuits: delicious round biscuits featuring pictures of the bunny. If you were unable to resist, finish your bickies and carry on along Zadelstraat. Pass the Maartensbrug and turn right into Lichte Gaard. Café Orloff, on the corner of Donkere Gaard and ’t Wed, is where Dick Bruna liked to drink his morning coffee.

If you’re still feeling fit, walk along ’t Wed, Trans and Kromme Nieuwegracht to Jeruzalemstraat, which is where Dick Bruna spent many years working in his attic studio. There’s a mosaic commemorating the famous bunny. You’ll get a good impression of the studio and the history of Miffy in the attic room of the Centraal Museum, where the real studio has been carefully reconstructed. Everything on display, from photos, cards and letters, to pencils, scissors and cupboards, originates from Bruna’s former workplace. The Miffy Museum just across the road is a haven for families with children between two and six years of age. Everything in the museum is child-proof: you can crawl and climb

through Miffy’s house, exploring all the rooms on the three floors as you go. Stroke the animals in the zoo, and enjoy the model road system on the top floor, complete with automatic barriers, a bus and pedestrian crossings. Until 31 January, the museum is also well worth visiting in the evenings. You don’t even have to go in; an outdoor light projector shines a ‘this is where Miffy lives’ show onto the façade every evening. The show lasts thirteen minutes and is on a continuous loop from 17.15 to 23.00. It’s about Miffy and her friends in the throes of winter adventures.

LIVING ROOMS

GLUREN BIJ DE BUREN During Gluren bij de Buren, countless Utrecht living rooms are transformed into mini-theatres where amateur artistes spend an afternoon in the spotlight. The programme includes a lot of music, but don’t be surprised if a participant suddenly starts to recite poetry or perform a stand-up comedy act. ROOMS ARE TRANSFORMED INTO A POP-UP MINI-THEATRE FOR THE EVENING.

Having a good peer inside isn’t the most important thing about Stukafest, but it’s certainly a great side-effect. The festival allows you simply to walk into student digs in Utrecht to watch artistes performing at barely an arm’s length away. And you can do this all evening; buying a ticket enables you to compile your very own cultural evening. Each of the rooms transformed into a pop-up mini-theatre for the evening hosts three performances at a price suitable for a student budget. Everything is within a ten-minute walk. Every first Monday of the month, Filmtheater ’t Hoogt screens a film with English subtitles. On 2 January, it will be Distancias Cortas, the heart-warming debut of Mexican director Alejandro Guzmán Alváres. The film tells the story of Federico, a man who weighs in at more than 200 kilos and has a passion for photography. His friendship with the rebellious teenager Paulo shows him that photography isn’t ‘just’ a hobby, but an activity that frees him from the confines of his body. The film on 6 February is The Student, about a Russian high school student who becomes convinced that the world has been lost to evil. He begins to challenge the morals and beliefs of the adults around him. Garbage boys

This performance is about a bad-tempered man who doesn’t like people and lives on his own among the garbage. The only things he likes are his possessions and his garbage! Every container, bag or bottle represents a story for him to dream about. Much to his annoyance, another garbage man arrives, one who does like other people. Just when the bad-tempered man realises that dreaming is much more fun with someone else, the intruder decides to leave. Will they become friends?
