Welcome to Utrecht

© Jurjen Drenth

You can’t miss it when you are in Utrecht this year: 2017 has been declared the ‘Mondriaan to Dutch Design’ year, to mark the 100th anniversary of art movement De Stijl. The influential work of artists including Gerrit Rietveld – who was born in Utrecht – will be spotlighted in various exhibitions and events in and around the city. You can visit architectural landmarks like the Rietveld Schröderhuis as well, but why not opt for some of the lesser known buildings Rietveld designed in the suburbs of Utrecht? MAG Utrecht also features a calendar with up-to-date information on the festivals, theatre and music events taking place in the city. And we have a useful map, on which you can find all the places we mention in the magazine. So get to know the special places, the best bars and restaurants and the full scope of cultural activities, whether you’re in the heart of the city or in one of the suburbs. We hope you have a terrific time!

CULTURAL SUNDAY

Utrecht 50-75

The Cultural Sunday Utrecht 50-75 on 23 April revolves around the changing character of Utrecht between 1950 and 1975. This poignant period in the city’s history will be brought to life through theatre, photos, film, music and people’s personal accounts. > 23 April, various locations culturelezondagen.nl/english

Philip Ward From the United Kingdom, flood risk scientist at the Institute for Environmental Studies ‘I’ve been living in Utrecht for ten years. I love the vibe of the city with all the cafes, restaurants and concerts. Café DeRat on Lange Smeestraat is a nice place for a beer. There’s lots of beers on tap, locals of all ages and two friendly cats. And at Saowapa on Nicolaasstraat, they make excellent authentic Thai food for a good price. If you fancy getting out of town, get a bike or canoe to Amelisweerd. I like to take along a picnic from Bigoli on Schoutenstraat!’ cafederat.nl saowapa.nl bigoli.nl

The spoken word, dialogue and physical encounter seem to be making a come-back. Uitgesproken Utrecht on 11 and 12 March is all about the spoken word in Utrecht. Derived from this, Allemaal Utrechters is a series of interviews with people who live in Utrecht but were born abroad, in which they tell us about their backgrounds and their ideas about the city. Then a quick bite from one of the (fish) stalls at Vredenburg open-air market, before securing a spot by the window in the newly renovated Bijenkorf restaurant to watch the hustle and bustle on the crossing below. Andrés Díaz From Colombia, postdoctoral researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam ‘I’ve always been a fan of good beer. When I moved to the Netherlands, I was really surprised by the quality of some local brews. In Utrecht, I’ve visited a couple of really good pubs like Kafé België on Oudegracht and De Kromme Haring on Europalaan. Moss & Amber Arcades

Two of the most exciting bands in the Netherlands for the price of one! The bordering-on-experimental Amsterdam guitar band Moss has been performing for 12.5 years, regularly producing gems of albums. Their fifth album ‘Strike’ was released in February. The driving force behind Amber Arcades is the Utrecht singer-songwriter Annelotte de Graaf, who made a dream debut in 2016 with ‘Fading Lines’. You can take the dream bit quite literally: Amber Arcades’ jingle-jangleguitar pop is wonderfully dreamy, but beware of the rude (and loud) awakening! > 22 April, TivoliVredenburg tivolivredenburg.nl

Utrecht Botanic Gardens

It’s almost spring so the Utrecht Botanic Gardens are about to re-open. The gardens, set in Utrecht Science Park in and around the nineteenth-century Fort Hoofddijk, are the oldest university gardens in the Netherlands. They are home to beautiful plants and flowers from all around the world, from rock plants to orchids and other tropical and sub-tropical plants. You’ll also find edible and medicinal plants and flowers. And Botanica café will even wrap up your lunch so you can enjoy a picnic in the grounds.

D

espite being the two most prominent artists within De Stijl, they never actually met: Piet Mondriaan and Gerrit Rietveld. The former was born in Amersfoort (1872); he was a painter, spent years living and working in Paris, loved jazz and boogie-woogie and was a founding father of abstract art. The latter was born in Utrecht (1888); he was a cabinet-maker and architect, designer of the world-famous Rietveld-Schröderhuis and proponent of modern architecture. Now, in 2017, Mondriaan and Rietveld will finally enjoy a symbolic meeting. To mark the 100th anniversary of this famous art movement, 2017 has been designated the Year of De Stijl in the Netherlands. Amersfoort and Utrecht will host parts of the programme, which include exhibitions, lectures, guided walks and cycle routes.

The musicians themselves explain briefly what they’re about to play and why, there’s no dress code (audience or orchestra) and you can take your drinks into the auditorium. In his latest show, artistic leader Marco Gerris takes us back to where it all began: ‘Elements of freestyle’ is about the fantastic rush you get when a complex stunt finally works. It’s about the total focus, the ecstasy and the feeling of ultimate freedom experienced by sportsmen and women. Next time? IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO ESCAPE THE HUMDRUM OF THE CENTRE THAN IN A B&B IN THE QUIET OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY? HET GEKROONDE VISJE IS LOCATED ON LAUWERECHT, JUST OUTSIDE THE INNER BELT.

URBAN APARTMENT

HET GEKROONDE VISJE Lauwerecht has a rich history. In previous centuries, it was a hub for the pottery industry. Over the years, factories and houses have been built, demolished, renovated and redeveloped. As a result, the street is very diverse: houses vary from workers’ cottages to large townhouses. Het gekroonde visje is a spacious luxury urban apartment on the quiet rearside of the house. There’s free parking and you have the use of two bikes and a garden to enjoy the first tentative rays of spring sunshine. > B&B Het gekroonde visje Lauwerecht 129 hetgekroondevisje.nl
